لِتَسۡتَوُۥا۟ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِۦ ثُمَّ تَذۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَةَ رَبِّكُمۡ إِذَا ٱسۡتَوَیۡتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ وَتَقُولُوا۟ سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُۥ مُقۡرِنِینَ ۝١٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

so that you sit upon their backs. And, again, remember the divine blessing of your Lord when you are seated on them and you say: Glory be to Him Who caused this to be subservient to us and we had not been ones who are equal to it!

litastawū ʿalā ẓuhūrihi thumma tadhkurū niʿ'mata rabbikum idhā is'tawaytum ʿalayhi wataqūlū sub'ḥāna alladhī sakhara lanā hādhā wamā kunnā lahu muq'rinīn

43:14

وَإِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ ۝١٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, we, certainly, are to our Lord ones who are turning.

wa-innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn

43:15

وَجَعَلُوا۟ لَهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ جُزۡءًاۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَكَفُورࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Yet they assigned with Him a part of some of His servants. Truly, the human being is clearly ungrateful.

wajaʿalū lahu min ʿibādihi juz'an inna l-insāna lakafūrun mubīnu

43:16

أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ مِمَّا یَخۡلُقُ بَنَاتࣲ وَأَصۡفَىٰكُم بِٱلۡبَنِینَ ۝١٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Or took He to Himself daughters from what He creates and selected He sons for you?

ami ittakhadha mimmā yakhluqu banātin wa-aṣfākum bil-banīn

43:17

وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِمَا ضَرَبَ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مَثَلࣰا ظَلَّ وَجۡهُهُۥ مُسۡوَدࣰّا وَهُوَ كَظِیمٌ ۝١٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And if good tidings were given to one of them of what he cited as an example from The Merciful, his face stayed one that is clouded over and he chokes.

wa-idhā bushira aḥaduhum bimā ḍaraba lilrraḥmāni mathalan ẓalla wajhuhu mus'waddan wahuwa kaẓīmu

43:18

أَوَ مَن یُنَشَّؤُا۟ فِی ٱلۡحِلۡیَةِ وَهُوَ فِی ٱلۡخِصَامِ غَیۡرُ مُبِینࣲ ۝١٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Is whoever is brought up amid glitter one who is without clarity when he is in an altercation?

awaman yunasha-u fī l-ḥil'yati wahuwa fī l-khiṣāmi ghayru mubīni

43:19

وَجَعَلُوا۟ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عِبَـٰدُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ إِنَـٰثًاۚ أَشَهِدُوا۟ خَلۡقَهُمۡۚ سَتُكۡتَبُ شَهَـٰدَتُهُمۡ وَیُسۡءَلُونَ ۝١٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And made they the angels—who themselves are servants of The Merciful— females? Bore they witness to their creation? Their giving testimony will be written down. And they will be asked about it.

wajaʿalū l-malāikata alladhīna hum ʿibādu l-raḥmāni ināthan ashahidū khalqahum satuk'tabu shahādatuhum wayus'alūn

43:20

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ مَا عَبَدۡنَـٰهُمۗ مَّا لَهُم بِذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَخۡرُصُونَ ۝٢٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And they would say: If willed The Merciful, we would not have worshiped them. And they have no knowledge of that. They do nothing but guess.

waqālū law shāa l-raḥmānu mā ʿabadnāhum mā lahum bidhālika min ʿil'min in hum illā yakhruṣūn

43:21

أَمۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ كِتَـٰبࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦ فَهُم بِهِۦ مُسۡتَمۡسِكُونَ ۝٢١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Or gave We them any Book before this so they are ones who hold fast to it?

am ātaynāhum kitāban min qablihi fahum bihi mus'tamsikūn

43:22

بَلۡ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا عَلَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣲ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ۝٢٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Nay! They said: We found our fathers in a community holding to a way of life and we are, truly, in their footsteps ones who are truly guided.

bal qālū innā wajadnā ābāanā ʿalā ummatin wa-innā ʿalā āthārihim muh'tadūn

43:23

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ مَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِی قَرۡیَةࣲ مِّن نَّذِیرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَاۤ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا عَلَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣲ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِم مُّقۡتَدُونَ ۝٢٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, thus, We sent not a warner to any town before thee without ones who are given ease saying: We found our fathers in a community. We are, certainly, ones who imitate their footsteps.

wakadhālika mā arsalnā min qablika fī qaryatin min nadhīrin illā qāla mut'rafūhā innā wajadnā ābāanā ʿalā ummatin wa-innā ʿalā āthārihim muq'tadūn

43:24

۞ قَـٰلَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِأَهۡدَىٰ مِمَّا وَجَدتُّمۡ عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَكُمۡۖ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا بِمَاۤ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٢٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He said: Even if I brought about better guidance for you than what you found your fathers on. They would say: Truly, we, in that with which you were sent are ones who disbelieve.

qāla awalaw ji'tukum bi-ahdā mimmā wajadttum ʿalayhi ābāakum qālū innā bimā ur'sil'tum bihi kāfirūn

43:25

فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٢٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So We requited them. Then, look on how had been the Ultimate End of the ones who deny.

fa-intaqamnā min'hum fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīn

43:26

وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِنَّنِی بَرَاۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Mention when Abraham said to his father and his folk: Truly, I am released from obligation to what you worship

wa-idh qāla ib'rāhīmu li-abīhi waqawmihi innanī barāon mimmā taʿbudūn

43:27

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِی فَطَرَنِی فَإِنَّهُۥ سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٢٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

other than He Who originated me and, truly, He will guide me.

illā alladhī faṭaranī fa-innahu sayahdīn

43:28

وَجَعَلَهَا كَلِمَةَۢ بَاقِیَةࣰ فِی عَقِبِهِۦ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٢٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And He made it an enduring Word among his posterity, so that perhaps they will return.

wajaʿalahā kalimatan bāqiyatan fī ʿaqibihi laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

43:29

بَلۡ مَتَّعۡتُ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ وَءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَرَسُولࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٢٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Nay! I gave enjoyment to these and to their fathers until The Truth drew near them and a clear Messenger.

bal mattaʿtu hāulāi waābāahum ḥattā jāahumu l-ḥaqu warasūlun mubīnu

43:30

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا سِحۡرࣱ وَإِنَّا بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٣٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when The Truth drew near them, they said: This is sorcery and we are ones who disbelieve in it.

walammā jāahumu l-ḥaqu qālū hādhā siḥ'run wa-innā bihi kāfirūn

43:31

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡقَرۡیَتَیۡنِ عَظِیمٍ ۝٣١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They said: Why was this, the Quran, not sent down to some eminent man of the two towns?

waqālū lawlā nuzzila hādhā l-qur'ānu ʿalā rajulin mina l-qaryatayni ʿaẓīmi

43:32

أَهُمۡ یَقۡسِمُونَ رَحۡمَتَ رَبِّكَۚ نَحۡنُ قَسَمۡنَا بَیۡنَهُم مَّعِیشَتَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَرَفَعۡنَا بَعۡضَهُمۡ فَوۡقَ بَعۡضࣲ دَرَجَـٰتࣲ لِّیَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُهُم بَعۡضࣰا سُخۡرِیࣰّاۗ وَرَحۡمَتُ رَبِّكَ خَیۡرࣱ مِّمَّا یَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٣٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Would they divide the mercy of thy Lord? It is We Who divided out among them their livelihood in this present life. Exalted are some of them above some others in degree so that some take to themselves others in their bondage. And the mercy of thy Lord is better than what they gather.

ahum yaqsimūna raḥmata rabbika naḥnu qasamnā baynahum maʿīshatahum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā warafaʿnā baʿḍahum fawqa baʿḍin darajātin liyattakhidha baʿḍuhum baʿḍan sukh'riyyan waraḥmatu rabbika khayrun mimmā yajmaʿūn

43:33

وَلَوۡلَاۤ أَن یَكُونَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ لَّجَعَلۡنَا لِمَن یَكۡفُرُ بِٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ لِبُیُوتِهِمۡ سُقُفࣰا مِّن فِضَّةࣲ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَیۡهَا یَظۡهَرُونَ ۝٣٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And were it not that humanity be one community, would We have made for whoever is ungrateful for The Merciful, roofs of silver for their houses, and stairways which they would scale up

walawlā an yakūna l-nāsu ummatan wāḥidatan lajaʿalnā liman yakfuru bil-raḥmāni libuyūtihim suqufan min fiḍḍatin wamaʿārija ʿalayhā yaẓharūn

43:34

وَلِبُیُوتِهِمۡ أَبۡوَ ٰبࣰا وَسُرُرًا عَلَیۡهَا یَتَّكِءُونَ ۝٣٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and for their houses, doors, and couches on which they would recline

walibuyūtihim abwāban wasururan ʿalayhā yattakiūn

43:35

وَزُخۡرُفࣰاۚ وَإِن كُلُّ ذَ ٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٣٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and ornaments? Yet all this would have been nothing, but enjoyment of this present life. And the world to come with your Lord is for the ones who are Godfearing.

wazukh'rufan wa-in kullu dhālika lammā matāʿu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wal-ākhiratu ʿinda rabbika lil'muttaqīn

43:36

وَمَن یَعۡشُ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ نُقَیِّضۡ لَهُۥ شَیۡطَـٰنࣰا فَهُوَ لَهُۥ قَرِینࣱ ۝٣٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And whoever withdraws from the Remembrance of The Merciful, We allotted for him a satan, so he is a comrade for him.

waman yaʿshu ʿan dhik'ri l-raḥmāni nuqayyiḍ lahu shayṭānan fahuwa lahu qarīnu

43:37

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَیَصُدُّونَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِ وَیَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ۝٣٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, they bar them from the way, but they assume that they are ones who are truly guided.

wa-innahum layaṣuddūnahum ʿani l-sabīli wayaḥsabūna annahum muh'tadūn

43:38

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَنَا قَالَ یَـٰلَیۡتَ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكَ بُعۡدَ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقَیۡنِ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡقَرِینُ ۝٣٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, when he drew near us he would say: Would that there were a distance between me and between thee of two sunrises! Miserable was the comrade.

ḥattā idhā jāanā qāla yālayta baynī wabaynaka buʿ'da l-mashriqayni fabi'sa l-qarīn

43:39

وَلَن یَنفَعَكُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ إِذ ظَّلَمۡتُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And it will never profit you this Day as you did wrong. You will be ones who are partners in the punishment.

walan yanfaʿakumu l-yawma idh ẓalamtum annakum fī l-ʿadhābi mush'tarikūn

43:40

أَفَأَنتَ تُسۡمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ أَوۡ تَهۡدِی ٱلۡعُمۡیَ وَمَن كَانَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٤٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So hast thou caused someone unwilling to hear, to hear or wilt thou guide the unwilling to see, or someone who had been clearly going astray?

afa-anta tus'miʿu l-ṣuma aw tahdī l-ʿum'ya waman kāna fī ḍalālin mubīni

43:41

فَإِمَّا نَذۡهَبَنَّ بِكَ فَإِنَّا مِنۡهُم مُّنتَقِمُونَ ۝٤١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And even if We take thee away, We will, truly, be ones who requite them

fa-immā nadhhabanna bika fa-innā min'hum muntaqimūn

43:42

أَوۡ نُرِیَنَّكَ ٱلَّذِی وَعَدۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَإِنَّا عَلَیۡهِم مُّقۡتَدِرُونَ ۝٤٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

or We will cause thee to see what We promised them. Then, We are ones who are omnipotent over them.

aw nuriyannaka alladhī waʿadnāhum fa-innā ʿalayhim muq'tadirūn

43:43

فَٱسۡتَمۡسِكۡ بِٱلَّذِیۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٤٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So hold thee fast to what was revealed to thee. Truly, thou art on a straight path.

fa-is'tamsik bi-alladhī ūḥiya ilayka innaka ʿalā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

43:44

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذِكۡرࣱ لَّكَ وَلِقَوۡمِكَۖ وَسَوۡفَ تُسۡءَلُونَ ۝٤٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, this is a remembrance for thee and thy folk. And you will be asked.

wa-innahu ladhik'run laka waliqawmika wasawfa tus'alūn

43:45

وَسۡءَلۡ مَنۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ مِن رُّسُلِنَاۤ أَجَعَلۡنَا مِن دُونِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ءَالِهَةࣰ یُعۡبَدُونَ ۝٤٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And ask ones whom We sent before thee of Our Messengers: Made We gods other than the Merciful to be worshiped?

wasal man arsalnā min qablika min rusulinā ajaʿalnā min dūni l-raḥmāni ālihatan yuʿ'badūn

43:46

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ فَقَالَ إِنِّی رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, certainly, We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council. So he said: Truly, I am a Messenger of the Lord of the worlds.

walaqad arsalnā mūsā biāyātinā ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi faqāla innī rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

43:47

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُم بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِذَا هُم مِّنۡهَا یَضۡحَكُونَ ۝٤٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But when he drew near them with Our signs, that is when they laugh at them.

falammā jāahum biāyātinā idhā hum min'hā yaḍḥakūn

43:48

وَمَا نُرِیهِم مِّنۡ ءَایَةٍ إِلَّا هِیَ أَكۡبَرُ مِنۡ أُخۡتِهَاۖ وَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٤٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We cause them not to see any sign, but it was greater than its sister’s sign. And We took them with the punishment so that perhaps they would return.

wamā nurīhim min āyatin illā hiya akbaru min ukh'tihā wa-akhadhnāhum bil-ʿadhābi laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

43:49

وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَ ٱلسَّاحِرُ ٱدۡعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ إِنَّنَا لَمُهۡتَدُونَ ۝٤٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And they said: O one who is a sorcerer! Call for us to thy Lord by the compact He made with thee. Truly, We will be ones who are truly guided.

waqālū yāayyuha l-sāḥiru ud'ʿu lanā rabbaka bimā ʿahida ʿindaka innanā lamuh'tadūn

43:50

فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ إِذَا هُمۡ یَنكُثُونَ ۝٥٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But when We removed the punishment from them, that is when they break their oath!

falammā kashafnā ʿanhumu l-ʿadhāba idhā hum yankuthūn

43:51

وَنَادَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی قَوۡمِهِۦ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَلَیۡسَ لِی مُلۡكُ مِصۡرَ وَهَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِیۤۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٥١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And Pharaoh proclaimed to his folk. He said: O my folk! Is not the dominion of Egypt for me and these rivers run beneath me? Will you not, then, perceive?

wanādā fir'ʿawnu fī qawmihi qāla yāqawmi alaysa lī mul'ku miṣ'ra wahādhihi l-anhāru tajrī min taḥtī afalā tub'ṣirūn

43:52

أَمۡ أَنَا۠ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِی هُوَ مَهِینࣱ وَلَا یَكَادُ یُبِینُ ۝٥٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Or am I better than this one who is despicable, who scarcely makes things clear?

am anā khayrun min hādhā alladhī huwa mahīnun walā yakādu yubīn

43:53

فَلَوۡلَاۤ أُلۡقِیَ عَلَیۡهِ أَسۡوِرَةࣱ مِّن ذَهَبٍ أَوۡ جَاۤءَ مَعَهُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ مُقۡتَرِنِینَ ۝٥٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Why were bracelets of gold not cast down on him or the angels drawn near to him as ones who are connected with one another?

falawlā ul'qiya ʿalayhi aswiratun min dhahabin aw jāa maʿahu l-malāikatu muq'tarinīn

43:54

فَٱسۡتَخَفَّ قَوۡمَهُۥ فَأَطَاعُوهُۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَوۡمࣰا فَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٥٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Thus, he irritated his folk. Then, they obeyed him. Truly, they had been a folk, ones who disobey.

fa-is'takhaffa qawmahu fa-aṭāʿūhu innahum kānū qawman fāsiqīn

43:55

فَلَمَّاۤ ءَاسَفُونَا ٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ فَأَغۡرَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٥٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So when they provoked against Us, We requited them and drowned them one and all

falammā āsafūnā intaqamnā min'hum fa-aghraqnāhum ajmaʿīn

43:56

فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ سَلَفࣰا وَمَثَلࣰا لِّلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٥٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and We made them a thing of the past and a parable for later ages.

fajaʿalnāhum salafan wamathalan lil'ākhirīn

43:57

۞ وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَ مَثَلًا إِذَا قَوۡمُكَ مِنۡهُ یَصِدُّونَ ۝٥٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when the son of Mary was cited as an example, that is when thy folk cry aloud

walammā ḍuriba ub'nu maryama mathalan idhā qawmuka min'hu yaṣiddūn

43:58

وَقَالُوۤا۟ ءَأَ ٰلِهَتُنَا خَیۡرٌ أَمۡ هُوَۚ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ إِلَّا جَدَلَۢاۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٌ خَصِمُونَ ۝٥٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and said: Are our gods better or is he? They cited him to thee not but to be argumentative. Nay! They are a contentious folk.

waqālū aālihatunā khayrun am huwa mā ḍarabūhu laka illā jadalan bal hum qawmun khaṣimūn

43:59

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا عَبۡدٌ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ مَثَلࣰا لِّبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He was but a servant to whom We were gracious, and We made him an example to the Children of Israel.

in huwa illā ʿabdun anʿamnā ʿalayhi wajaʿalnāhu mathalan libanī is'rāīl

43:60

وَلَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَجَعَلۡنَا مِنكُم مَّلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَخۡلُفُونَ ۝٦٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And if We will, We would have assigned angels to succeed among you on the earth.

walaw nashāu lajaʿalnā minkum malāikatan fī l-arḍi yakhlufūn

43:61

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَعِلۡمࣱ لِّلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمۡتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَٱتَّبِعُونِۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣱ ۝٦١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, he is with the knowledge of the Hour, so contest not about it and follow Me. This is a straight path.

wa-innahu laʿil'mun lilssāʿati falā tamtarunna bihā wa-ittabiʿūni hādhā ṣirāṭun mus'taqīmu

43:62

وَلَا یَصُدَّنَّكُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٦٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And let not Satan bar you. Truly, he is a clear enemy to you.

walā yaṣuddannakumu l-shayṭānu innahu lakum ʿaduwwun mubīnu

43:63

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ عِیسَىٰ بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ قَالَ قَدۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِٱلۡحِكۡمَةِ وَلِأُبَیِّنَ لَكُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی تَخۡتَلِفُونَ فِیهِۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝٦٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when Jesus drew near with the clear portents, he said: Truly, I drew near you with wisdom and in order to make manifest to you some of that about which you are at variance in it. So be Godfearing of God and obey me.

walammā jāa ʿīsā bil-bayināti qāla qad ji'tukum bil-ḥik'mati wali-ubayyina lakum baʿḍa alladhī takhtalifūna fīhi fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

43:64

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ رَبِّی وَرَبُّكُمۡ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣱ ۝٦٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, God He is my Lord and your Lord so worship Him. This is a straight path.

inna l-laha huwa rabbī warabbukum fa-uʿ'budūhu hādhā ṣirāṭun mus'taqīmu

43:65

فَٱخۡتَلَفَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ مِنۢ بَیۡنِهِمۡۖ فَوَیۡلࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنۡ عَذَابِ یَوۡمٍ أَلِیمٍ ۝٦٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

The confederates were at variance among themselves. So woe to those who did wrong from the punishment of a painful Day.

fa-ikh'talafa l-aḥzābu min baynihim fawaylun lilladhīna ẓalamū min ʿadhābi yawmin alīmi

43:66

هَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٦٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Looked they on but for the Hour that will approach them suddenly while they are not aware?

hal yanẓurūna illā l-sāʿata an tatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

43:67

ٱلۡأَخِلَّاۤءُ یَوۡمَىِٕذِۭ بَعۡضُهُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٦٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Friends on that Day will be enemies some to some others, but ones who are Godfearing.

al-akhilāu yawma-idhin baʿḍuhum libaʿḍin ʿaduwwun illā l-mutaqīn

43:68

یَـٰعِبَادِ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ وَلَاۤ أَنتُمۡ تَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٦٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

O My servants! This Day there shall be no fear in you nor will you feel remorse.

yāʿibādi lā khawfun ʿalaykumu l-yawma walā antum taḥzanūn

43:69

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ مُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٦٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

It will be said to those who believed in Our signs and had been ones who submit to God:

alladhīna āmanū biāyātinā wakānū mus'limīn

43:70

ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ أَنتُمۡ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجُكُمۡ تُحۡبَرُونَ ۝٧٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Enter the Garden, you and your spouses, to be walking with joy!

ud'khulū l-janata antum wa-azwājukum tuḥ'barūn

43:71

یُطَافُ عَلَیۡهِم بِصِحَافࣲ مِّن ذَهَبࣲ وَأَكۡوَابࣲۖ وَفِیهَا مَا تَشۡتَهِیهِ ٱلۡأَنفُسُ وَتَلَذُّ ٱلۡأَعۡیُنُۖ وَأَنتُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٧١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

There will be passed around among them platters of gold and goblets. And in it will be whatever souls lust for and all that in which the eyes delight. And you will be ones who dwell in it forever.

yuṭāfu ʿalayhim biṣiḥāfin min dhahabin wa-akwābin wafīhā mā tashtahīhi l-anfusu wataladhu l-aʿyunu wa-antum fīhā khālidūn

43:72

وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ ٱلَّتِیۤ أُورِثۡتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٧٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

This is the Garden that you were given as inheritance because of what you had been doing.

watil'ka l-janatu allatī ūrith'tumūhā bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

43:73

لَكُمۡ فِیهَا فَـٰكِهَةࣱ كَثِیرَةࣱ مِّنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٧٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

For you there will be much sweet fruit from which you will eat.

lakum fīhā fākihatun kathīratun min'hā takulūn

43:74

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ فِی عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٧٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, ones who sin will be in the punishment of hell, ones who will dwell in it forever.

inna l-muj'rimīna fī ʿadhābi jahannama khālidūn

43:75

لَا یُفَتَّرُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَهُمۡ فِیهِ مُبۡلِسُونَ ۝٧٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

It will not be decreased for them and they will be ones who are seized with despair in it.

lā yufattaru ʿanhum wahum fīhi mub'lisūn

43:76

وَمَا ظَلَمۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٧٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We did not wrong them, but they had been ones who are unjust.

wamā ẓalamnāhum walākin kānū humu l-ẓālimīn

43:77

وَنَادَوۡا۟ یَـٰمَـٰلِكُ لِیَقۡضِ عَلَیۡنَا رَبُّكَۖ قَالَ إِنَّكُم مَّـٰكِثُونَ ۝٧٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And they would cry out: O Malik! Let thy Lord finish us. He would say: Truly, you will be ones who abide.

wanādaw yāmāliku liyaqḍi ʿalaynā rabbuka qāla innakum mākithūn

43:78

لَقَدۡ جِئۡنَـٰكُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَكُمۡ لِلۡحَقِّ كَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٧٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Certainly, We brought about The Truth to you, but most of you are ones who dislike The Truth.

laqad ji'nākum bil-ḥaqi walākinna aktharakum lil'ḥaqqi kārihūn

43:79

أَمۡ أَبۡرَمُوۤا۟ أَمۡرࣰا فَإِنَّا مُبۡرِمُونَ ۝٧٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Or fixed they on some affair? Then, We, too, are ones who fix some affair.

am abramū amran fa-innā mub'rimūn

43:80

أَمۡ یَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّا لَا نَسۡمَعُ سِرَّهُمۡ وَنَجۡوَىٰهُمۚ بَلَىٰ وَرُسُلُنَا لَدَیۡهِمۡ یَكۡتُبُونَ ۝٨٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Assume they that We hear not their secret thoughts and their conspiring secretly? Yea! Our messengers are near them writing down.

am yaḥsabūna annā lā nasmaʿu sirrahum wanajwāhum balā warusulunā ladayhim yaktubūn

43:81

قُلۡ إِن كَانَ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ وَلَدࣱ فَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡعَـٰبِدِینَ ۝٨١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Say: If The Merciful had had a son, then, I would be first of the ones who worship.

qul in kāna lilrraḥmāni waladun fa-anā awwalu l-ʿābidīn

43:82

سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَرۡشِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝٨٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Glory be to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, from all that they allege!

sub'ḥāna rabbi l-samāwāti wal-arḍi rabbi l-ʿarshi ʿammā yaṣifūn

43:83

فَذَرۡهُمۡ یَخُوضُوا۟ وَیَلۡعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یُلَـٰقُوا۟ یَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِی یُوعَدُونَ ۝٨٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So let them engage in idle talk and play until they encounter their Day which they are promised.

fadharhum yakhūḍū wayalʿabū ḥattā yulāqū yawmahumu alladhī yūʿadūn

43:84

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَفِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَـٰهࣱۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٨٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And it is He Who is in the heaven, God, and on the earth, God. And He is The Wise, The Knowing.

wahuwa alladhī fī l-samāi ilāhun wafī l-arḍi ilāhun wahuwa l-ḥakīmu l-ʿalīm

43:85

وَتَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِی لَهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٨٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Blessed be He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them and with Whom is the knowledge of the Hour and to Whom you will be returned.

watabāraka alladhī lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā waʿindahu ʿil'mu l-sāʿati wa-ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

43:86

وَلَا یَمۡلِكُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَن شَهِدَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And those whom they call to possess no power other than Him for intercession, only whoever bore witness to The Truth, and they know.

walā yamliku alladhīna yadʿūna min dūnihi l-shafāʿata illā man shahida bil-ḥaqi wahum yaʿlamūn

43:87

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَهُمۡ لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۖ فَأَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٨٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And if thou hadst asked them: Who created them? They would, certainly, say: God. Then, how are they misled?

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqahum layaqūlunna l-lahu fa-annā yu'fakūn

43:88

وَقِیلِهِۦ یَـٰرَبِّ إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٨٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And his saying: O my Lord! Truly, these are a folk who believe not,

waqīlihi yārabbi inna hāulāi qawmun lā yu'minūn

43:89

فَٱصۡفَحۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَقُلۡ سَلَـٰمࣱۚ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

so overlook them and say: Peace. And they will know.

fa-iṣ'faḥ ʿanhum waqul salāmun fasawfa yaʿlamūn
