1 Consequences of Rejection
77:1 ›
وَٱلۡمُرۡسَلَـٰتِ عُرۡفࣰا ۝١
Muhammad Asad
CONSIDER these [messages,] sent forth in wave
wal-mur'salāti ʿur'fa
77:2 ›
فَٱلۡعَـٰصِفَـٰتِ عَصۡفࣰا ۝٢
Muhammad Asad
and then storming on with a tempest's force
fal-ʿāṣifāti ʿaṣfa
77:3 ›
وَٱلنَّـٰشِرَ ٰتِ نَشۡرࣰا ۝٣
Muhammad Asad
Consider these [messages] that spread [the truth] far and wide
wal-nāshirāti nashra
77:4 ›
فَٱلۡفَـٰرِقَـٰتِ فَرۡقࣰا ۝٤
Muhammad Asad
thus separating [right and wrong] with all clarity
fal-fāriqāti farqa
77:5 ›
فَٱلۡمُلۡقِیَـٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۝٥
Muhammad Asad
and then giving forth a reminder
fal-mul'qiyāti dhik'ra
77:6 ›
عُذۡرًا أَوۡ نُذۡرًا ۝٦
Muhammad Asad
[promising] freedom from blame or [offering] a warning
innamā tūʿadūna lawāqiʿu
77:7 ›
إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَوَ ٰقِعࣱ ۝٧
Muhammad Asad
BEHOLD, all that you are told to expect will surely come to pass
Innama tooAAadoona lawaqiAAun
77:8 ›
فَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ طُمِسَتۡ ۝٨
Muhammad Asad
Thus, [it will come to pass] when the stars are effaced
fa-idhā l-nujūmu ṭumisa
77:9 ›
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ فُرِجَتۡ ۝٩
Muhammad Asad
and when the sky is rent asunder
wa-idhā l-samāu furija
77:10 ›
وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ نُسِفَتۡ ۝١٠
Muhammad Asad
and when the mountains are scattered like dust
wa-idhā l-jibālu nusifa
77:11 ›
وَإِذَا ٱلرُّسُلُ أُقِّتَتۡ ۝١١
Muhammad Asad
and when all the apostles are called together at a time appointed..
wa-idhā l-rusulu uqqita
77:12 ›
لِأَیِّ یَوۡمٍ أُجِّلَتۡ ۝١٢
Muhammad Asad
For what day has the term [of all this] been set
li-ayyi yawmin ujjila
77:13 ›
لِیَوۡمِ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ۝١٣
Muhammad Asad
For the Day of Distinction [between the true and the false]
liyawmi l-faṣl
77:14 ›
وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا یَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ۝١٤
Muhammad Asad
And what could make thee conceive what that Day of Distinction will be
wamā adrāka mā yawmu l-faṣl
77:15 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝١٥
Muhammad Asad
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:16 ›
أَلَمۡ نُهۡلِكِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٦
Muhammad Asad
Did We not destroy [so many of] those [sinners] of olden days
alam nuh'liki l-awalīn
77:17 ›
ثُمَّ نُتۡبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٧
Muhammad Asad
And We shall let them be followed by those of later times
thumma nut'biʿuhumu l-ākhirīn
77:18 ›
كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٨
Muhammad Asad
[for] thus do We deal with such as are lost in sin
kadhālika nafʿalu bil-muj'rimīn
77:19 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝١٩
Muhammad Asad
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:20 ›
أَلَمۡ نَخۡلُقكُّم مِّن مَّاۤءࣲ مَّهِینࣲ ۝٢٠
Muhammad Asad
Did We not create you out of a humble flui
alam nakhluqkkum min māin mahīni
77:21 ›
فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ فِی قَرَارࣲ مَّكِینٍ ۝٢١
Muhammad Asad
which We then let remain in [the womb's] firm keepin
fajaʿalnāhu fī qarārin makīni
77:22 ›
إِلَىٰ قَدَرࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٢٢
Muhammad Asad
for a term pre-ordained
ilā qadarin maʿlūmi
77:23 ›
فَقَدَرۡنَا فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡقَـٰدِرُونَ ۝٢٣
Muhammad Asad
Thus have We determined [the nature of man's creation]: and excellent indeed is Our power to determine [what is to be]
faqadarnā faniʿ'ma l-qādirūn
77:24 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٢٤
Muhammad Asad
Woe, on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:25 ›
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ كِفَاتًا ۝٢٥
Muhammad Asad
Have We not caused the earth to hold within itsel
alam najʿali l-arḍa kifāta
77:26 ›
أَحۡیَاۤءࣰ وَأَمۡوَ ٰتࣰا ۝٢٦
Muhammad Asad
the living and the dead
aḥyāan wa-amwāta
77:27 ›
وَجَعَلۡنَا فِیهَا رَوَ ٰسِیَ شَـٰمِخَـٰتࣲ وَأَسۡقَیۡنَـٰكُم مَّاۤءࣰ فُرَاتࣰا ۝٢٧
Muhammad Asad
and have We not set on it proud, firm mountains, and given you sweet water to drink
wajaʿalnā fīhā rawāsiya shāmikhātin wa-asqaynākum māan furāta
77:28 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٢٨
Muhammad Asad
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:29 ›
ٱنطَلِقُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٢٩
Muhammad Asad
GO ON towards that [resurrection] which you were wont to call a lie
inṭaliqū ilā mā kuntum bihi tukadhibūn
77:30 ›
ٱنطَلِقُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ ظِلࣲّ ذِی ثَلَـٰثِ شُعَبࣲ ۝٣٠
Muhammad Asad
Go on towards the threefold shado
inṭaliqū ilā ẓillin dhī thalāthi shuʿabi
77:31 ›
لَّا ظَلِیلࣲ وَلَا یُغۡنِی مِنَ ٱللَّهَبِ ۝٣١
Muhammad Asad
that will offer no [cooling] shade and will be of no avail against the flam
lā ẓalīlin walā yugh'nī mina l-lahab
77:32 ›
إِنَّهَا تَرۡمِی بِشَرَرࣲ كَٱلۡقَصۡرِ ۝٣٢
Muhammad Asad
which – behold!- will throw up sparks like [burning] logs
innahā tarmī bishararin kal-qaṣr
77:33 ›
كَأَنَّهُۥ جِمَـٰلَتࣱ صُفۡرࣱ ۝٣٣
Muhammad Asad
like giant fiery ropes
ka-annahu jimālatun ṣuf'ru
77:34 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٣٤
Muhammad Asad
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth –
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:35 ›
هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ لَا یَنطِقُونَ ۝٣٥
Muhammad Asad
that Day on which they will not [be able to] utter a word
hādhā yawmu lā yanṭiqūn
77:36 ›
وَلَا یُؤۡذَنُ لَهُمۡ فَیَعۡتَذِرُونَ ۝٣٦
Muhammad Asad
nor be allowed to proffer excuses
walā yu'dhanu lahum fayaʿtadhirūn
77:37 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٣٧
Muhammad Asad
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth –
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:38 ›
هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِۖ جَمَعۡنَـٰكُمۡ وَٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٣٨
Muhammad Asad
that Day of Distinction [between the true and the false, when they will be told]: "We have brought you together with those [sinners] of olden times
hādhā yawmu l-faṣli jamaʿnākum wal-awalīn
77:39 ›
فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمۡ كَیۡدࣱ فَكِیدُونِ ۝٣٩
Muhammad Asad
and if you [think that you] have a subterfuge left, try to outwit Me!"
fa-in kāna lakum kaydun fakīdūn
2 Consequences of Rejection
77:40 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٤٠
Muhammad Asad
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:41 ›
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ فِی ظِلَـٰلࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٤١
Muhammad Asad
[AS AGAINST this,] behold, the God-conscious shall dwell amidst [cooling] shades and springs
inna l-mutaqīna fī ẓilālin waʿuyūni
77:42 ›
وَفَوَ ٰكِهَ مِمَّا یَشۡتَهُونَ ۝٤٢
Muhammad Asad
and [partake of] whatever fruit they may desire
wafawākiha mimmā yashtahūn
77:43 ›
كُلُوا۟ وَٱشۡرَبُوا۟ هَنِیۤءَۢا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٤٣
Muhammad Asad
[and they will be told:] "Eat and drink in good cheer in return for what you did [in life]!"
kulū wa-ish'rabū hanīan bimā kuntum taʿmalūn
77:44 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٤٤
Muhammad Asad
Thus, behold, do We reward the doers of good
innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
77:45 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٤٥
Muhammad Asad
[but] woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:46 ›
كُلُوا۟ وَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ قَلِیلًا إِنَّكُم مُّجۡرِمُونَ ۝٤٦
Muhammad Asad
EAT [your fill] and enjoy your life for a little while, O you who are lost in sin
kulū watamattaʿū qalīlan innakum muj'rimūn
77:47 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٤٧
Muhammad Asad
[But] woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:48 ›
وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمُ ٱرۡكَعُوا۟ لَا یَرۡكَعُونَ ۝٤٨
Muhammad Asad
and when they are told, "Bow down [before God]", do not bow down
wa-idhā qīla lahumu ir'kaʿū lā yarkaʿūn
77:49 ›
وَیۡلࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٤٩
Muhammad Asad
woe on that Day unto those who give the to the truth
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīn
77:50 ›
فَبِأَیِّ حَدِیثِۭ بَعۡدَهُۥ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥٠
Muhammad Asad
In what other tiding, then, will they, after this, believe
fabi-ayyi ḥadīthin baʿdahu yu'minūn
