1 The Day of Decision

عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ

what now are they asking about

AAamma yatasaaloona

عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ

is it the great news of resurrection

AAani alnnaba-i alAAatheemi

الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ

the subject of dispute between those who argue in favour and those who argue against it

Allathee hum feehi mukhtalifoona

كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

No, but they shall soon come to know

Kalla sayaAAlamoona

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

No, but indeed they shall soon come to know. Then Allah reminds them by drawing their attention to His omnipotence; He says

Thumma kalla sayaAAlamoona

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا

Did We not prepare the earth to be a settled habitation

Alam najAAali al-arda mihadan

وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا

and the mountains as stays that afford stabilization!

Waaljibala awtadan

وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا

We created you in pairs

Wakhalaqnakum azwajan

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا

We made your sleep* a repose for relief and recuperation

WajaAAalna nawmakum subatan

وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا

and the night a vestment and black was the colour chosen to absorb all light emanating from the cosmic sources of illumination

WajaAAalna allayla libasan

وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا

We made the day-time luminous for activity and livelihood

WajaAAalna alnnahara maAAashan

وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا

We built above you seven fortitudinous heavens vast and with endless amplitude.

Wabanayna fawqakum sabAAan shidadan

وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا

We installed a lamp glowing dispensing heat and illumination.

WajaAAalna sirajan wahhajan

وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا

We sent down from the rainy clouds water affluent and at times involving succession

Waanzalna mina almuAAsirati maan thajjajan

لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا

To bring forth therewith grains and vegetation

Linukhrija bihi habban wanabatan

وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا

and thickly foliaged orchards and gardens of delightful variation

Wajannatin alfafan

إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا

Indeed the Day of Judgment foreordained falls at an absolute time Predestinated

Inna yawma alfasli kana meeqatan

يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا

This is the Day the trumpet is sounded and you come together in throngs embodying your souls and fully actuated

Yawma yunfakhu fee alssoori fata/toona afwajan

وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا

and the heaven is opened typifying open doors for the adminission of all

Wafutihati alssamao fakanat abwaban

وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا

and the mountains are set in motion and into a mirage as if transmigrated

Wasuyyirati aljibalu fakanat saraban

إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا

There and then hell is made to lie in wait

Inna jahannama kanat mirsadan

لِّلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا

It is the destined abode of the transgressors wherein they are designated

Lilttagheena maaban

لَّابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا

Therein, they remain for ages as has been predestinated

Labitheena feeha ahqaban

لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا

They will taste no coolness for relief nor a drink to quench their thirst

La yathooqoona feeha bardan wala sharaban

إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا

But only boiling water and their rotten discharges for doing their worst

Illa hameeman waghassaqan

جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا

A requital commensurate with deeds

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا

They never believed they would be judged

Innahum kanoo la yarjoona hisaban

وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا

and Our revelations and signs they charged with falsehood and insolently did they negate

Wakaththaboo bi-ayatina kiththaban

وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا

But everything We kept on record and in a book did We incorporate

Wakulla shay-in ahsaynahu kitaban

2 The Day of Decision

فَذُوقُوا فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا

Now taste the outcome of your deeds and plenty of the same will We increase and perpetuate

Fathooqoo falan nazeedakum illa AAathaban

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا

But for the righteous there is victory in the attainment of their goal

Inna lilmuttaqeena mafazan

حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا

Orchards and vineyards

Hada-iqa waaAAnaban

وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا

Companions of like age featuring highest quality of attractive femininity

WakawaAAiba atraban

وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا

and a cup full of delightful drink, clear, pure and really good

Waka/san dihaqan

لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا

No vanities shall they hear therein nor is it the place for falsehood, or discord

La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwan wala kiththaban

جَزَاءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا

A recompense from Allah, your Creator and a reward greatly in accord

Jazaan min rabbika AAataan hisaban

رَّبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَٰنِ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا

Creator of the heavens and the earth and all in between. AL- Rahman, with whom no one can hold discourse nor shall an argument be allowed to intervene

Rabbi alssamawati waal-ardi wama baynahuma alrrahmani la yamlikoona minhu khitaban

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا

This is the day when the spirit Jibril (Gabriel) and the angels stand in lines and keep silence at its height, except he whom AL-Rahman permits and then he says what is right

Yawma yaqoomu alrroohu waalmala-ikatu saffan la yatakallamoona illa man athina lahu alrrahmanu waqala sawaban

ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ فَمَن شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا

Indeed this is the day of truth, and who so desires may still turn to Allah, his Creator, for tutelary protection

Thalika alyawmu alhaqqu faman shaa ittakhatha ila rabbihi maaban

إِنَّا أَنذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنتُ تُرَابًا

We have warned you of punishment evident and quite near that deserves attention. On the day it comes to pass shall every one look at his deeds, the lawful and the lawless which his wrongful and unclean hands had committed. The infidel shall wish, then, he had remained mere dust

Inna antharnakum AAathaban qareeban yawma yanthuru almaro ma qaddamat yadahu wayaqoolu alkafiru ya laytanee kuntu turaban
