1 The Day of Decision

عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ

About what do they ask one another?

AAamma yatasaaloona

عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ

About the great news

AAani alnnaba-i alAAatheemi

الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ

That they differ over it.

Allathee hum feehi mukhtalifoona

كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

Nay! They will come to know.

Kalla sayaAAlamoona

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

Nay again! They will come to know.

Thumma kalla sayaAAlamoona

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا

Have We not made the earth (as) a cradle

Alam najAAali al-arda mihadan

وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا

And the mountains (as) stakes?

Waaljibala awtadan

وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا

Have We not created you in pairs

Wakhalaqnakum azwajan

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا

Appointed your sleep for a rest,

WajaAAalna nawmakum subatan

وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا

Made the night as raiment

WajaAAalna allayla libasan

وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا

And the day as the means of livelihood?

WajaAAalna alnnahara maAAashan

وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا

Have we not built above you seven strong firmaments,

Wabanayna fawqakum sabAAan shidadan

وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا

Made therein a blazing lamp,

WajaAAalna sirajan wahhajan

وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا

And sent down, from the rain clouds, abundant water

Waanzalna mina almuAAsirati maan thajjajan

لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا

In order to bring forth thereby grain and herbs,

Linukhrija bihi habban wanabatan

وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا

And gardens of thick foliage?

Wajannatin alfafan

إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا

Indeed, the decisive day, (-the ‘Day of Judgment’ -), is an appointed time.

Inna yawma alfasli kana meeqatan

يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا

It is the day when the Trumpet is blown. Thus, you will come forth in multitudes.

Yawma yunfakhu fee alssoori fata/toona afwajan

وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا

The sky will be opened, becoming gateways,

Wafutihati alssamao fakanat abwaban

وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا

And the mountains will be removed, becoming a mirage.

Wasuyyirati aljibalu fakanat saraban

إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا

Indeed, ‘Gehenna’ is a place of ambush

Inna jahannama kanat mirsadan

لِّلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا

For the transgressors: it is a place for return

Lilttagheena maaban

لَّابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا

To abide therein for ages.

Labitheena feeha ahqaban

لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا

They will taste therein neither coolness nor any drink.

La yathooqoona feeha bardan wala sharaban

إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا

But scalding water and purulence

Illa hameeman waghassaqan

جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا

As suitable requital for their deeds.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا

Indeed, they hoped there would be no ‘Reckoning Day’,

Innahum kanoo la yarjoona hisaban

وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا

And (falsely) claimed that Our ‘Revelations’ were a big lie.

Wakaththaboo bi-ayatina kiththaban

وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا

Yet We have recorded everything as a book.

Wakulla shay-in ahsaynahu kitaban

2 The Day of Decision

فَذُوقُوا فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا

Consequently, taste (the painful punishment)! We are not going to increase you except in punishment!.

Fathooqoo falan nazeedakum illa AAathaban

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا

Indeed, for the ‘Pious’, there will be a big reward,

Inna lilmuttaqeena mafazan

حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا

Gardens and vineyards,

Hada-iqa waaAAnaban

وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا

Charming maidens of equal age,

WakawaAAiba atraban

وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا

And overflowing cup.

Waka/san dihaqan

لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا

They will hear therein no evil vain talks or lies.

La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwan wala kiththaban

جَزَاءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا

A reward from your Lord - a generous gift in payment –

Jazaan min rabbika AAataan hisaban

رَّبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَٰنِ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا

The Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and whatsoever is in between them, the Most Beneficent God. No one can have direct dialogue with Him

Rabbi alssamawati waal-ardi wama baynahuma alrrahmani la yamlikoona minhu khitaban

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا

On the day when the Spirit, (Archangel ‘Gabriel’), and the ‘Angels’ will stand in rows. They speak not except for the one whom the Most Beneficent God allows him as he will speak the right thing.

Yawma yaqoomu alrroohu waalmala-ikatu saffan la yatakallamoona illa man athina lahu alrrahmanu waqala sawaban

ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ فَمَن شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا

That is the True Day. Therefore, whoever wills can take a safe return to his Lord!

Thalika alyawmu alhaqqu faman shaa ittakhatha ila rabbihi maaban

إِنَّا أَنذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنتُ تُرَابًا

Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on a day when man will behold what his hands have put forth, and the ‘impious’ one will say: "Oh, I wish I were dust!"

Inna antharnakum AAathaban qareeban yawma yanthuru almaro ma qaddamat yadahu wayaqoolu alkafiru ya laytanee kuntu turaban
