78:1

عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ

Musharraf Hussain

What are they questioning one another about?

AAamma yatasaaloona

78:2

عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ

Musharraf Hussain

Is it the awesome news

AAani alnnaba-i alAAatheemi

78:3

الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ

Musharraf Hussain

that they are disputing?

Allathee hum feehi mukhtalifoona

78:4

كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

Musharraf Hussain

Nay, soon they will know,

Kalla sayaAAlamoona

78:5

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

Musharraf Hussain

indeed very soon they will know.

Thumma kalla sayaAAlamoona

78:6

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا

Musharraf Hussain

Didn’t We make the Earth a vast expanse,

Alam najAAali al-arda mihadan

78:7

وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا

Musharraf Hussain

the mountains like mighty stakes?

Waaljibala awtadan

78:8

وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا

Musharraf Hussain

Didn’t We create you in pairs,

Wakhalaqnakum azwajan

78:9

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا

Musharraf Hussain

made your sleep for resting,

WajaAAalna nawmakum subatan

78:10

وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا

Musharraf Hussain

made the night a covering,

WajaAAalna allayla libasan

78:11

وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا

Musharraf Hussain

and made the day for earning a livelihood?

WajaAAalna alnnahara maAAashan

78:12

وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا

Musharraf Hussain

Didn’t We build seven durable skies over your head,

Wabanayna fawqakum sabAAan shidadan

78:13

وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا

Musharraf Hussain

the sun a brightly burning lamp,

WajaAAalna sirajan wahhajan

78:14

وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا

Musharraf Hussain

and sent down abundant rain pouring from storm clouds?

Waanzalna mina almuAAsirati maan thajjajan

78:15

لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا

Musharraf Hussain

So We produced cereals, plants,

Linukhrija bihi habban wanabatan

78:16

وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا

Musharraf Hussain

and gardens of dense greenery

Wajannatin alfafan

78:17

إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا

Musharraf Hussain

The time for the Day of Distinction is fixed;

Inna yawma alfasli kana meeqatan

78:18

يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا

Musharraf Hussain

when the Trumpet will be blown and you will come in crowds that Day;

Yawma yunfakhu fee alssoori fata/toona afwajan

78:19

وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

when the sky is opened becoming a gateway,

Wafutihati alssamao fakanat abwaban

78:20

وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

and the mountains will move as if they were a mirage.

Wasuyyirati aljibalu fakanat saraban

78:21

إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا

Musharraf Hussain

Hell lies in waiting,

Inna jahannama kanat mirsadan

78:22

لِّلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا

Musharraf Hussain

to receive the disobedient, their home;

Lilttagheena maaban

78:23

لَّابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

they will live there for ages and ages.

Labitheena feeha ahqaban

78:24

لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

There will be nothing cool to taste, nor anything to drink

La yathooqoona feeha bardan wala sharaban

78:25

إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا

Musharraf Hussain

except boiling water and a dark foul fluid;

Illa hameeman waghassaqan

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

Since they never expected any kind of accounting,

Innahum kanoo la yarjoona hisaban

78:28

وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا

Musharraf Hussain

and denied our Scriptures.

Wakaththaboo bi-ayatina kiththaban

78:29

وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

Yet We took account of everything in a Book,

Wakulla shay-in ahsaynahu kitaban

78:30

فَذُوقُوا فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

so it will be said to them: “Taste the punishment. We won’t add anything except punishment for you!

Fathooqoo falan nazeedakum illa AAathaban

78:31

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا

Musharraf Hussain

The mindful will have a splendid success:

Inna lilmuttaqeena mafazan

78:32

حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا

وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

beautiful young companions of similar ages

and an overflowing cup.

Waka/san dihaqan

78:35

لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا

Musharraf Hussain

They won’t hear idle talk or lies,

La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwan wala kiththaban

78:36

جَزَاءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

a fitting reward and a gift from Your Lord

Jazaan min rabbika AAataan hisaban

78:37

رَّبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَٰنِ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

Lord of the Heavens and the Earth and what is between the two. The Most Kind will not allow them to speak

Rabbi alssamawati waal-ardi wama baynahuma alrrahmani la yamlikoona minhu khitaban

78:38

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

on the Day when the Spirit Jibreel and the other angels will stand in rows, they won’t speak either without the Most Kind’s permission, and they will speak the truth.

Yawma yaqoomu alrroohu waalmala-ikatu saffan la yatakallamoona illa man athina lahu alrrahmanu waqala sawaban

78:39

ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ فَمَن شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا

Musharraf Hussain

That’s the Day of Truth! So, anyone who wishes, let him take the road leading to His Lord.

Thalika alyawmu alhaqqu faman shaa ittakhatha ila rabbihi maaban

78:40

إِنَّا أَنذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنتُ تُرَابًا

Musharraf Hussain

We certainly warned you of a punishment so near, the Day when every person will see what their own hands have produced, and the disbeliever will say, “Oh, I wish I were dust!

Inna antharnakum AAathaban qareeban yawma yanthuru almaro ma qaddamat yadahu wayaqoolu alkafiru ya laytanee kuntu turaban
