1 Not a Madman's Message

۞ نۤۚ وَٱلۡقَلَمِ وَمَا یَسۡطُرُونَ ۝١

Nun. By the pen and what they write,

noon wal-qalami wamā yasṭurūn

مَاۤ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُونࣲ ۝٢

You are not, by the favour of your Lord, mad.

mā anta biniʿ'mati rabbika bimajnūni

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجۡرًا غَیۡرَ مَمۡنُونࣲ ۝٣

And indeed, for you surely is a reward unending.

wa-inna laka la-ajran ghayra mamnūni

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝٤

And indeed, you are surely of a great nature.

wa-innaka laʿalā khuluqin ʿaẓīmi

فَسَتُبۡصِرُ وَیُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٥

So soon you will see and they will see,

fasatub'ṣiru wayub'ṣirūn

بِأَییِّكُمُ ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُ ۝٦

Which of you is the afflicted.

bi-ayyikumu l-maftūn

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِینَ ۝٧

Indeed, your Lord, He knows best who has erred from His way; and He knows best the guided ones.

inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḍalla ʿan sabīlihi wahuwa aʿlamu bil-muh'tadīn

فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝٨

So do not obey those who say it is a lie;

falā tuṭiʿi l-mukadhibīn

وَدُّوا۟ لَوۡ تُدۡهِنُ فَیُدۡهِنُونَ ۝٩

They wished if you would be pliant, then they would be pliant.

waddū law tud'hinu fayud'hinūn

وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافࣲ مَّهِینٍ ۝١٠

And do not obey every contemptible, often swearer,

walā tuṭiʿ kulla ḥallāfin mahīni

هَمَّازࣲ مَّشَّاۤءِۭ بِنَمِیمࣲ ۝١١

Backbiter, walking about with slander,

hammāzin mashāin binamīmi

مَّنَّاعࣲ لِّلۡخَیۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِیمٍ ۝١٢

Preventer of the good, sinful transgressor,

mannāʿin lil'khayri muʿ'tadin athīmi

عُتُلِّۭ بَعۡدَ ذَ ٰلِكَ زَنِیمٍ ۝١٣

Rough, after that ignoble.

an kāna dhā mālin wabanīn

أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٤

That he was a possessor of wealth and children,

An kana tha malin wabaneena

إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِیرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٥

When Our signs are recited to him he says, 'Legends of the former people.'

idhā tut'lā ʿalayhi āyātunā qāla asāṭīru l-awalīn

سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِ ۝١٦

Soon We will brand him on the nose.

sanasimuhu ʿalā l-khur'ṭūm

إِنَّا بَلَوۡنَـٰهُمۡ كَمَا بَلَوۡنَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ إِذۡ أَقۡسَمُوا۟ لَیَصۡرِمُنَّهَا مُصۡبِحِینَ ۝١٧

Indeed, We have tested them as We tested the fellows of the garden, when they swore to surely, definitely reap it in the morning.

innā balawnāhum kamā balawnā aṣḥāba l-janati idh aqsamū layaṣrimunnahā muṣ'biḥīn

وَلَا یَسۡتَثۡنُونَ ۝١٨

And they did not make exception.

walā yastathnūn

فَطَافَ عَلَیۡهَا طَاۤىِٕفࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمۡ نَاۤىِٕمُونَ ۝١٩

Then a visitation from your Lord came upon it while they were sleeping.

faṭāfa ʿalayhā ṭāifun min rabbika wahum nāimūn

فَأَصۡبَحَتۡ كَٱلصَّرِیمِ ۝٢٠

And it became like the reaped land.

fa-aṣbaḥat kal-ṣarīm

فَتَنَادَوۡا۟ مُصۡبِحِینَ ۝٢١

And in the morning, they called,

fatanādaw muṣ'biḥīn

أَنِ ٱغۡدُوا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرۡثِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰرِمِینَ ۝٢٢

Saying: 'Go early to your tilth if you would reap.'

ani igh'dū ʿalā ḥarthikum in kuntum ṣārimīn

فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟ وَهُمۡ یَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ ۝٢٣

So they went, and they, they whispered,

fa-inṭalaqū wahum yatakhāfatūn

أَن لَّا یَدۡخُلَنَّهَا ٱلۡیَوۡمَ عَلَیۡكُم مِّسۡكِینࣱ ۝٢٤

Saying: 'A poor person will definitely not enter it today upon you.'

an lā yadkhulannahā l-yawma ʿalaykum mis'kīnu

وَغَدَوۡا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرۡدࣲ قَـٰدِرِینَ ۝٢٥

And they went early upon purpose, able.

waghadaw ʿalā ḥardin qādirīn

فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡهَا قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا لَضَاۤلُّونَ ۝٢٦

Then when they saw it, they said, 'Indeed, we surely err.

falammā ra-awhā qālū innā laḍāllūn

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ ۝٢٧

Nay, we are denied.'

bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn

قَالَ أَوۡسَطُهُمۡ أَلَمۡ أَقُل لَّكُمۡ لَوۡلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ ۝٢٨

The most moderate of them said, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"'

qāla awsaṭuhum alam aqul lakum lawlā tusabbiḥūn

قَالُوا۟ سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّنَاۤ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٩

They said, 'Glory be to our Lord! Indeed we, we were wrongdoers.'

qālū sub'ḥāna rabbinā innā kunnā ẓālimīn

فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَلَـٰوَمُونَ ۝٣٠

And some of them advanced towards some, blaming one another.

fa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatalāwamūn

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰوَیۡلَنَاۤ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَـٰغِینَ ۝٣١

They said, 'O woe to us! Indeed, we were immoderate.

qālū yāwaylanā innā kunnā ṭāghīn

عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَاۤ أَن یُبۡدِلَنَا خَیۡرࣰا مِّنۡهَاۤ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَ ٰغِبُونَ ۝٣٢

Perhaps our Lord will give us better than it in exchange; indeed, we to our Lord are desiring.'

kadhālika l-ʿadhābu walaʿadhābu l-ākhirati akbaru law kānū yaʿlamūn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡعَذَابُۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ أَكۡبَرُۚ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٣

Thus is the punishment. And surely, the punishment of the hereafter is greater, if they know.

Kathalika alAAathabu walaAAathabu al-akhirati akbaru law kanoo yaAAlamoona

2 A Reminder for Nations

إِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٣٤

Indeed, for those who fear with their Lord are the Gardens of pleasure.

inna lil'muttaqīna ʿinda rabbihim jannāti l-naʿīm

أَفَنَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ كَٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣٥

Then will We make those who submit like the sinners?

afanajʿalu l-mus'limīna kal-muj'rimīn

مَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٣٦

What ails you? How do you judge?

mā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ كِتَـٰبࣱ فِیهِ تَدۡرُسُونَ ۝٣٧

Or there is for you a book, in it you study;

am lakum kitābun fīhi tadrusūn

إِنَّ لَكُمۡ فِیهِ لَمَا تَخَیَّرُونَ ۝٣٨

Indeed, for you in it is surely what you choose.

inna lakum fīhi lamā takhayyarūn

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ أَیۡمَـٰنٌ عَلَیۡنَا بَـٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمۡ لَمَا تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٣٩

Or there are oaths for you upon Us, reaching to the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, for you is surely what you judge.

am lakum aymānun ʿalaynā bālighatun ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati inna lakum lamā taḥkumūn

سَلۡهُمۡ أَیُّهُم بِذَ ٰلِكَ زَعِیمٌ ۝٤٠

Ask them, which of them will guarantee that?

salhum ayyuhum bidhālika zaʿīmu

أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَكَاۤءُ فَلۡیَأۡتُوا۟ بِشُرَكَاۤىِٕهِمۡ إِن كَانُوا۟ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٤١

Or there are partners for them, then let them come with their partners, if they are truthful.

am lahum shurakāu falyatū bishurakāihim in kānū ṣādiqīn

یَوۡمَ یُكۡشَفُ عَن سَاقࣲ وَیُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٤٢

On the day shank shall be uncovered; and they will be called to the prostration and they will not be able;

yawma yuk'shafu ʿan sāqin wayud'ʿawna ilā l-sujūdi falā yastaṭīʿūn

خَـٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةࣱۖ وَقَدۡ كَانُوا۟ یُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمۡ سَـٰلِمُونَ ۝٤٣

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And certainly, they were called to the prostration while they were safe.

khāshiʿatan abṣāruhum tarhaquhum dhillatun waqad kānū yud'ʿawna ilā l-sujūdi wahum sālimūn

فَذَرۡنِی وَمَن یُكَذِّبُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِۖ سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُم مِّنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤٤

So leave Me and whoever calls this, the information, a lie. Soon We will bring them down by degrees from where they do not know.

fadharnī waman yukadhibu bihādhā l-ḥadīthi sanastadrijuhum min ḥaythu lā yaʿlamūn

وَأُمۡلِی لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ كَیۡدِی مَتِینٌ ۝٤٥

And I will give respite to them. Indeed, My plot is strong.

wa-um'lī lahum inna kaydī matīnu

أَمۡ تَسۡءَلُهُمۡ أَجۡرࣰا فَهُم مِّن مَّغۡرَمࣲ مُّثۡقَلُونَ ۝٤٦

Or you ask them for a reward, so they are burdened from debt.

am tasaluhum ajran fahum min maghramin muth'qalūn

أَمۡ عِندَهُمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبُ فَهُمۡ یَكۡتُبُونَ ۝٤٧

Or with them is the unseen, so they write.

am ʿindahumu l-ghaybu fahum yaktubūn

فَٱصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلۡحُوتِ إِذۡ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكۡظُومࣱ ۝٤٨

So be patient for the judgment of your Lord, and do not be like the fellow of the fish, when he called while he repressed.

fa-iṣ'bir liḥuk'mi rabbika walā takun kaṣāḥibi l-ḥūti idh nādā wahuwa makẓūmu

لَّوۡلَاۤ أَن تَدَ ٰرَكَهُۥ نِعۡمَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلۡعَرَاۤءِ وَهُوَ مَذۡمُومࣱ ۝٤٩

If not that favour reached him from his Lord, surely he would have been thrown on the naked land while he is blamed.

lawlā an tadārakahu niʿ'matun min rabbihi lanubidha bil-ʿarāi wahuwa madhmūmu

فَٱجۡتَبَـٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٥٠

And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

fa-ij'tabāhu rabbuhu fajaʿalahu mina l-ṣāliḥīn

وَإِن یَكَادُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَیُزۡلِقُونَكَ بِأَبۡصَـٰرِهِمۡ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَیَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٥١

And indeed, those who disbelieved will almost surely make you slip with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say, 'Indeed, he is surely mad.'

wa-in yakādu alladhīna kafarū layuz'liqūnaka bi-abṣārihim lammā samiʿū l-dhik'ra wayaqūlūna innahu lamajnūnu

وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرࣱ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٥٢

And it is not except a Reminder to the worlds.

wamā huwa illā dhik'run lil'ʿālamīn
