وَجَٰوَزْنَا wajāwaznā
And We led across V
بِبَنِىٓ bibanī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ is'rāīla

ٱلْبَحْرَ l-baḥra

فَأَتَوْا۟ fa-ataw
Then they came V
عَلَىٰ ʿalā
upon Prep
قَوْمٍ qawmin
a people Noun
يَعْكُفُونَ yaʿkufūna
devoted V
عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā
to Prep
أَصْنَامٍ aṣnāmin
idols Noun
لَّهُمْ lahum
of theirs Noun
قَالُوا۟ qālū
They said V
يَٰمُوسَى yāmūsā
O Musa Noun
ٱجْعَل ij'ʿal
Make V
لَّنَآ lanā
for us Noun
إِلَٰهًا ilāhan
a god Noun
كَمَا kamā
like what Prep
لَهُمْ lahum
they have Noun
ءَالِهَةٌ ālihatun
gods Noun
قَالَ qāla
He said V
إِنَّكُمْ innakum
Indeed, you Prep
قَوْمٌ qawmun
(are) a people Noun
تَجْهَلُونَ tajhalūna
ignorant V

We took the Children of Israel across the sea, but when they came upon a people who worshipped idols, they said, ‘Moses, make a god for us like theirs.’ He said, ‘You really are foolish people

Arabic Text

وَجَـٰوَزۡنَا بِبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ فَأَتَوۡا۟ عَلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ یَعۡكُفُونَ عَلَىٰۤ أَصۡنَامࣲ لَّهُمۡۚ قَالُوا۟ یَـٰمُوسَى ٱجۡعَل لَّنَاۤ إِلَـٰهࣰا كَمَا لَهُمۡ ءَالِهَةࣱۚ قَالَ إِنَّكُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ تَجۡهَلُونَ ۝١٣٨

wajāwaznā bibanī is'rāīla l-baḥra fa-ataw ʿalā qawmin yaʿkufūna ʿalā aṣnāmin lahum qālū yāmūsā ij'ʿal lanā ilāhan kamā lahum ālihatun qāla innakum qawmun tajhalūn
