وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡقُرُونَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا۟ وَجَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِیُؤۡمِنُوا۟ۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We had already destroyed generations before you when they wronged, and their messengers had come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe. Thus do We recompense the criminal peopl
Abdel Haleem: Before you people, We destroyed whole generations when they did evil- their messengers brought them clear signs but they refused to believe. This is how We repay the guilty
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: We destroyed the generations before you when they did wrong; and their messengers (from Allah) came unto them with clear proofs (of His Sovereignty) but they would not believe. Thus do We reward the guilty folk
Hud 11:117 Verb
وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ لِیُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ بِظُلۡمࣲ وَأَهۡلُهَا مُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١١٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And your Lord would not have destroyed the cities unjustly while their people were reformers
Abdel Haleem: Your Lord would not destroy any town without cause if its people were acting righteously
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: In truth thy Lord destroyed not the townships tyrannously while their folk were doing right
Abraham 14:13 Verb
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِرُسُلِهِمۡ لَنُخۡرِجَنَّكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِنَاۤ أَوۡ لَتَعُودُنَّ فِی مِلَّتِنَاۖ فَأَوۡحَىٰۤ إِلَیۡهِمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ لَنُهۡلِكَنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." So their Lord inspired to them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers
Abdel Haleem: The disbelievers said to their messengers, ‘We shall expel you from our land unless you return to our religion.’ But their Lord inspired the messengers: ‘We shall destroy the evildoers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And those who disbelieved said unto their messengers: Verily we will drive you out from our land, unless ye return to our religion. Then their Lord inspired them, (saying): Verily we shall destroy the wrong-doers
The Rock, Stoneland, Rock City 15:4 Verb
وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree
Abdel Haleem: Never have We destroyed a community that did not have a set time
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And We destroyed no township but there was a known decree for it
Children of Israel, The Israelites 17:16 Verb
وَإِذَاۤ أَرَدۡنَاۤ أَن نُّهۡلِكَ قَرۡیَةً أَمَرۡنَا مُتۡرَفِیهَا فَفَسَقُوا۟ فِیهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَیۡهَا ٱلۡقَوۡلُ فَدَمَّرۡنَـٰهَا تَدۡمِیرࣰا ۝١٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction
Abdel Haleem: When We decide to destroy a town, We command those corrupted by wealth [to reform], but they [persist in their] disobedience; Our sentence is passed, and We destroy them utterly
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when We would destroy a township We send commandment to its folk who live at ease, and afterward they commit abomination therein, and so the Word (of doom) hath effect for it, and we annihilate it with complete annihilation
Children of Israel, The Israelites 17:17 Verb
وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ نُوحࣲۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِۦ خَبِیرَۢا بَصِیرࣰا ۝١٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Noah. And sufficient is your Lord, concerning the sins of His servants, as Acquainted and Seeing
Abdel Haleem: How many generations We have destroyed since Noah! Your Lord knows and observes the sins of His servants well enough
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: How many generations have We destroyed since Noah! And Allah sufficeth as Knower and Beholder of the sins of His slaves
The Cave 18:59 Verb
وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا۟ وَجَعَلۡنَا لِمَهۡلِكِهِم مَّوۡعِدࣰا ۝٥٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And those cities - We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time
Abdel Haleem: [just like] the former communities We destroyed for doing wrong: We set an appointed time for their destruction
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And (all) those townships! We destroyed them when they did wrong, and We appointed a fixed time for their destruction
Mary 19:74 Verb
وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡنٍ هُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ أَثَـٰثࣰا وَرِءۡیࣰا ۝٧٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many a generation have We destroyed before them who were better in possessions and [outward] appearance
Abdel Haleem: We have destroyed many a generation before them who surpassed them in riches and outward glitter
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: How many a generation have We destroyed before them, who were more imposing in respect of gear and outward seeming
Mary 19:98 Verb
وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡنٍ هَلۡ تُحِسُّ مِنۡهُم مِّنۡ أَحَدٍ أَوۡ تَسۡمَعُ لَهُمۡ رِكۡزَۢا ۝٩٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many have We destroyed before them of generations? Do you perceive of them anyone or hear from them a sound
Abdel Haleem: How many generations We have destroyed before them! Do you perceive a single one of them now, or hear as much as a whisper
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And how many a generation before them have We destroyed! Canst thou (Muhammad) see a single man of them, or hear from them the slightest sound
Ta Ha 20:128 Verb
أَفَلَمۡ یَهۡدِ لَهُمۡ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ یَمۡشُونَ فِی مَسَـٰكِنِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّأُو۟لِی ٱلنُّهَىٰ ۝١٢٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence
Abdel Haleem: Do they not draw a lesson from the many generations We destroyed before them, through whose dwelling places they now walk? There truly are signs in this for anyone with understanding
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Is it not a guidance for them (to know) how many a generation We destroyed before them, amid whose dwellings they walk? Lo! therein verily are signs for men of thought
Ta Ha 20:134 Verb
وَلَوۡ أَنَّاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُم بِعَذَابࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦ لَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَوۡلَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡتَ إِلَیۡنَا رَسُولࣰا فَنَتَّبِعَ ءَایَـٰتِكَ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن نَّذِلَّ وَنَخۡزَىٰ ۝١٣٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses before we were humiliated and disgraced?"
Abdel Haleem: If We had destroyed them through punishment before this Messenger came, they would have said, ‘Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger, we could have followed Your revelations before we suffered humiliation and disgrace!’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And if we had destroyed them with some punishment before it, they would assuredly have said: Our Lord! If only Thou hadst sent unto us a messenger, so that we might have followed Thy revelations before we were (thus) humbled and disgraced
The Prophets 21:6 Verb
مَاۤ ءَامَنَتۡ قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهَاۤۖ أَفَهُمۡ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Not a [single] city which We destroyed believed before them, so will they believe
Abdel Haleem: But of the communities We destroyed before them not a single one believed. Will these now believe
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Not a township believed of those which We destroyed before them (though We sent them portents): would they then believe
The Prophets 21:9 Verb
ثُمَّ صَدَقۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡوَعۡدَ فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَمَن نَّشَاۤءُ وَأَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Then We fulfilled for them the promise, and We saved them and whom We willed and destroyed the transgressors
Abdel Haleem: We fulfilled Our promise to them in the end: We saved them and those We wished to save, and We destroyed those who exceeded all bounds
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Then we fulfilled the promise unto them. So we delivered them and whom We would, and We destroyed the prodigals
The Prophets 21:95 Verb
وَحَرَ ٰمٌ عَلَىٰ قَرۡیَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهَاۤ أَنَّهُمۡ لَا یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٩٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And there is prohibition upon [the people of] a city which We have destroyed that they will [ever] retur
Abdel Haleem: No community destroyed by Us can escape its return
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And there is a ban upon any community which We have destroyed: that they shall not return
The Pilgrimage 22:45 Verb
فَكَأَیِّن مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهَا وَهِیَ ظَالِمَةࣱ فَهِیَ خَاوِیَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا وَبِئۡرࣲ مُّعَطَّلَةࣲ وَقَصۡرࣲ مَّشِیدٍ ۝٤٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong - so it is [now] fallen into ruin - and [how many] an abandoned well and [how many] a lofty palace
Abdel Haleem: How many towns steeped in wrongdoing We have destroyed and left in total ruin; how many deserted wells; how many lofty palaces
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: How many a township have We destroyed while it was sinful, so that it lieth (to this day) in ruins, and (how many) a deserted well and lofty tower
The Poets 26:139 Verb
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers
Abdel Haleem: They denounced him as a liar, and so We destroyed them. There truly is a sign in this, though most of them do not believe
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And they denied him; therefor We destroyed them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers
The Poets 26:208 Verb
وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We did not destroy any city except that it had warner
Abdel Haleem: Never have We destroyed a town without sending down messengers to warn it
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And We destroyed no township but it had its warner
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:43 Verb
وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡقُرُونَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ بَصَاۤىِٕرَ لِلنَّاسِ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣰ لَّعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٤٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We gave Moses the Scripture, after We had destroyed the former generations, as enlightenment for the people and guidance and mercy that they might be reminded
Abdel Haleem: After We had destroyed the earlier generations, We gave Moses the Scripture to provide insight, guidance, and mercy for people, so that they might take heed
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And We verily gave the Scripture unto Moses after We had destroyed the generations of old: clear testimonies for mankind, and a guidance and a mercy, that haply they might reflect
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:58 Verb
وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةِۭ بَطِرَتۡ مَعِیشَتَهَاۖ فَتِلۡكَ مَسَـٰكِنُهُمۡ لَمۡ تُسۡكَن مِّنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰاۖ وَكُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَ ٰرِثِینَ ۝٥٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly. And it is We who were the inheritors
Abdel Haleem: We have destroyed many a community that once revelled in its wanton wealth and easy living: since then their dwelling places have barely been inhabited- We are the only heir
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And how many a community have We destroyed that was thankless for its means of livelihood! And yonder are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them save a little. And We, even We, were the inheritors
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:78 Verb
قَالَ إِنَّمَاۤ أُوتِیتُهُۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمٍ عِندِیۤۚ أَوَ لَمۡ یَعۡلَمۡ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَدۡ أَهۡلَكَ مِن قَبۡلِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ مَنۡ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُ قُوَّةࣰ وَأَكۡثَرُ جَمۡعࣰاۚ وَلَا یُسۡءَلُ عَن ذُنُوبِهِمُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٧٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): He said, "I was only given it because of knowledge I have." Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him of generations those who were greater than him in power and greater in accumulation [of wealth]? But the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked
Abdel Haleem: but he answered, ‘This wealth was given to me on account of the knowledge I possess.’ Did he not know that God had destroyed many generations before him, who had greater power than him and built up greater wealth? The guilty will not be questioned about their sins
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He said: I have been given it only on account of knowledge I possess. Knew he not that Allah had destroyed already of the generations before him men who were mightier than him in strength and greater in respect of following? The guilty are not questioned of their sins
The Cow 2:205 Verb
وَإِذَا تَوَلَّىٰ سَعَىٰ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لِیُفۡسِدَ فِیهَا وَیُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡحَرۡثَ وَٱلنَّسۡلَۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡفَسَادَ ۝٢٠٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allah does not like corruption
Abdel Haleem: When he leaves, he sets out to spread corruption in the land, destroying crops and live-stock- God does not like corruption
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when he turneth away (from thee) his effort in the land is to make mischief therein and to destroy the crops and the cattle; and Allah loveth not mischief
The Prostration, Worship, Adoration, The Adoration 32:26 Verb
أَوَ لَمۡ یَهۡدِ لَهُمۡ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ یَمۡشُونَ فِی مَسَـٰكِنِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتٍۚ أَفَلَا یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٢٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, [as] they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs; then do they not hear
Abdel Haleem: Is it not a lesson for them [to see] how many generations We destroyed before them, in whose homes they now walk? There truly are signs in this- do they not hear
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Is it not a guidance for them (to observe) how many generations We destroyed before them, amid whose dwelling places they do walk? Lo! therein verily are portents! Will they not then heed
Ya Sin, Ya-Seen 36:31 Verb
أَلَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ أَنَّهُمۡ إِلَیۡهِمۡ لَا یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٣١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them - that they to them will not return
Abdel Haleem: Do they not see how many generations We have destroyed before them, none of whom will ever come back to them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them, which indeed returned not unto them
The Letter Sad 38:3 Verb
كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن قَرۡنࣲ فَنَادَوا۟ وَّلَاتَ حِینَ مَنَاصࣲ ۝٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): How many a generation have We destroyed before them, and they [then] called out; but it was not a time for escape
Abdel Haleem: How many generations We have destroyed before them! They all cried out, once it was too late, for escape
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: How many a generation We destroyed before them, and they cried out when it was no longer the time for escape
The Family of Imran, The House of Imran 3:117 Verb
مَثَلُ مَا یُنفِقُونَ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا كَمَثَلِ رِیحࣲ فِیهَا صِرٌّ أَصَابَتۡ حَرۡثَ قَوۡمࣲ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ فَأَهۡلَكَتۡهُۚ وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَـٰكِنۡ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١١٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): The example of what they spend in this worldly life is like that of a wind containing frost which strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves and destroys it. And Allah has not wronged them, but they wrong themselves
Abdel Haleem: and whatever they give away in this life will be nullified: a frosty wind strikes and destroys the harvest of people who have wronged themselves. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: The likeness of that which they spend in this life of the world is as the likeness of a biting, icy wind which smiteth the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves, and devastateth it. Allah wronged them not, but they do wrong themselves
The Forgiver, The Forgiving One 40:34 Verb
وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمۡ یُوسُفُ مِن قَبۡلُ بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَمَا زِلۡتُمۡ فِی شَكࣲّ مِّمَّا جَاۤءَكُم بِهِۦۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا هَلَكَ قُلۡتُمۡ لَن یَبۡعَثَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ رَسُولࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَنۡ هُوَ مُسۡرِفࣱ مُّرۡتَابٌ ۝٣٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And Joseph had already come to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt of that which he brought to you, until when he died, you said, 'Never will Allah send a messenger after him.' Thus does Allah leave astray he who is a transgressor and skeptic."
Abdel Haleem: Joseph came to you before with clear signs, but you never ceased to doubt the message he brought you. When he died, you said, “God will not send another messenger.”’ In this way God leaves the doubting rebels to stray
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And verily Joseph brought you of old clear proofs, yet ye ceased not to be in doubt concerning what he brought you till, when he died, ye said: Allah will not send any messenger after him. Thus Allah deceiveth him who is a prodigal, a doubter
Ornaments of Gold, Luxury, The Embellishment 43:8 Verb
فَأَهۡلَكۡنَاۤ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشࣰا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded
Abdel Haleem: so We have destroyed mightier people than [the disbelievers of Mecca] and their example has gone down in history
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Then We destroyed men mightier than these in prowess; and the example of the men of old hath gone (before them)
Smoke, The Evident Smoke 44:37 Verb
أَهُمۡ خَیۡرٌ أَمۡ قَوۡمُ تُبَّعࣲ وَٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ مُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals
Abdel Haleem: Are they better than the people of Tubbaand those who flourished before them? We destroyed them all- they were guilty
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Are they better, or the folk of Tubb'a and those before them? We destroyed them, for surely they were guilty
The Kneeling, Crouching 45:24 Verb
وَقَالُوا۟ مَا هِیَ إِلَّا حَیَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنۡیَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحۡیَا وَمَا یُهۡلِكُنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلدَّهۡرُۚ وَمَا لَهُم بِذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَظُنُّونَ ۝٢٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming
Abdel Haleem: They say, ‘There is only our life in this world: we die, we live, nothing but time destroys us.’ They have no knowledge of this; they only follow guesswork. Their only argument
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And they say: There is naught but our life of the world; we die and we live, and naught destroyeth us save time; when they have no knowledge whatsoever of (all) that; they do but guess
The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills 46:27 Verb
وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مَا حَوۡلَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ وَصَرَّفۡنَا ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٢٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We have already destroyed what surrounds you of [those] cities, and We have diversified the signs [or verses] that perhaps they might return [from disbelief]
Abdel Haleem: We have also destroyed other communities that once flourished around you- We had given them various signs so that they might return to the right way
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And verily We have destroyed townships round about you, and displayed (for them) Our revelation, that haply they might return
The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills 46:35 Verb
فَٱصۡبِرۡ كَمَا صَبَرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلۡعَزۡمِ مِنَ ٱلرُّسُلِ وَلَا تَسۡتَعۡجِل لَّهُمۡۚ كَأَنَّهُمۡ یَوۡمَ یَرَوۡنَ مَا یُوعَدُونَ لَمۡ یَلۡبَثُوۤا۟ إِلَّا سَاعَةࣰ مِّن نَّهَارِۭۚ بَلَـٰغࣱۚ فَهَلۡ یُهۡلَكُ إِلَّا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ ۝٣٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So be patient, [O Muhammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them. It will be - on the Day they see that which they are promised - as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. [This is] notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people
Abdel Haleem: Be steadfast [Muhammad], like those messengers of firm resolve. Do not seek to hasten the punishment for the disbelievers: on the Day they see what they had been warned about, it will seem to them that they lingered no more than a single hour of a single day [in this life]. This is a warning. Shall any be destroyed except the defiant
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Then have patience (O Muhammad) even as the stout of heart among the messengers (of old) had patience, and seek not to hasten on (the doom) for them. On the day when they see that which they are promised (it will seem to them) as though they had tarried but an hour of daylight. A clear message. Shall any be destroyed save evil-living folk
Muhammad 47:13 Verb
وَكَأَیِّن مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ هِیَ أَشَدُّ قُوَّةࣰ مِّن قَرۡیَتِكَ ٱلَّتِیۤ أَخۡرَجَتۡكَ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَلَا نَاصِرَ لَهُمۡ ۝١٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many a city was stronger than your city [Makkah] which drove you out? We destroyed them; and there was no helper for them
Abdel Haleem: We have destroyed many a town stronger than your own [Prophet]- the town which [chose to] expel you- and they had no one to help them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And how many a township stronger than thy township (O Muhammad) which hath cast thee out, have We destroyed, and they had no helper
Women 4:176 Verb
یَسۡتَفۡتُونَكَ قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یُفۡتِیكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡكَلَـٰلَةِۚ إِنِ ٱمۡرُؤٌا۟ هَلَكَ لَیۡسَ لَهُۥ وَلَدࣱ وَلَهُۥۤ أُخۡتࣱ فَلَهَا نِصۡفُ مَا تَرَكَۚ وَهُوَ یَرِثُهَاۤ إِن لَّمۡ یَكُن لَّهَا وَلَدࣱۚ فَإِن كَانَتَا ٱثۡنَتَیۡنِ فَلَهُمَا ٱلثُّلُثَانِ مِمَّا تَرَكَۚ وَإِن كَانُوۤا۟ إِخۡوَةࣰ رِّجَالࣰا وَنِسَاۤءࣰ فَلِلذَّكَرِ مِثۡلُ حَظِّ ٱلۡأُنثَیَیۡنِۗ یُبَیِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ أَن تَضِلُّوا۟ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمُۢ ۝١٧٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They request from you a [legal] ruling. Say, " Allah gives you a ruling concerning one having neither descendants nor ascendants [as heirs]." If a man dies, leaving no child but [only] a sister, she will have half of what he left. And he inherits from her if she [dies and] has no child. But if there are two sisters [or more], they will have two-thirds of what he left. If there are both brothers and sisters, the male will have the share of two females. Allah makes clear to you [His law], lest you go astray. And Allah is Knowing of all things
Abdel Haleem: They ask you [Prophet] for a ruling. Say, ‘God gives you a ruling about inheritance from someone who dies childless with no surviving parents. If a man leaves a sister, she is entitled to half of the inheritance; if she has no child her brother is her sole heir; if there are two sisters, they are entitled to two-thirds of the inheritance between them, but if there are surviving brothers and sisters, the male is entitled to twice the share of the female. God makes this clear to you so that you do not make mistakes: He has full knowledge of everything.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They ask thee for a pronouncement. Say: Allah hath pronounced for you concerning distant kindred. If a man die childless and he have a sister, hers is half the heritage, and he would have inherited from her had she died childless. And if there be two sisters, then theirs are two-thirds of the heritage, and if they be brethren, men and women, unto the male is the equivalent of the share of two females. Allah expoundeth unto you, so that ye err not. Allah is Knower of all things
The Letter Qaf 50:36 Verb
وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡنٍ هُمۡ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشࣰا فَنَقَّبُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ هَلۡ مِن مَّحِیصٍ ۝٣٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many a generation before them did We destroy who were greater than them in [striking] power and had explored throughout the lands. Is there any place of escape
Abdel Haleem: We have destroyed even mightier generations before these disbelievers, who travelled through [many] lands- was there any escape
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And how many a generation We destroyed before them, who were mightier than these in prowess so that they overran the lands! Had they any place of refuge (when the judgment came)
The Star 53:50 Verb
وَأَنَّهُۥۤ أَهۡلَكَ عَادًا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٥٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And that He destroyed the first [people of] 'Aa
Abdel Haleem: that it was He who destroyed, in their entirety, ancient 'A
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And that He destroyed the former (tribe of) A'ad
The Moon 54:51 Verb
وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَاۤ أَشۡیَاعَكُمۡ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ ۝٥١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We have already destroyed your kinds, so is there any who will remember
Abdel Haleem: We have destroyed the likes of you in the past. Will anyone take heed
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And verily We have destroyed your fellows; but is there any that remembereth
The Table, The Table Spread 5:17 Verb
لَّقَدۡ كَفَرَ ٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡمَسِیحُ ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَۚ قُلۡ فَمَن یَمۡلِكُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءًا إِنۡ أَرَادَ أَن یُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡمَسِیحَ ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ وَأُمَّهُۥ وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰاۗ وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۚ یَخۡلُقُ مَا یَشَاۤءُۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝١٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allah is Christ, the son of Mary. Say, "Then who could prevent Allah at all if He had intended to destroy Christ, the son of Mary, or his mother or everyone on the earth?" And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. He creates what He wills, and Allah is over all things competent
Abdel Haleem: Those who say, ‘God is the Messiah, the son of Mary,’ are defying the truth. Say, ‘If it had been God’s will, could anyone have prevented Him from destroying the Messiah, son of Mary, together with his mother and everyone else on earth? Control of the heavens and earth and all that is between them belongs to God: He creates whatever He will. God has power over everything.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They indeed have disbelieved who say: Lo! Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary. Say: Who then can do aught against Allah, if He had willed to destroy the Messiah son of Mary, and his mother and everyone on earth? Allah's is the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them. He createth what He will. And Allah is Able to do all things
The Sovereignty, Control, The Kingdom 67:28 Verb
قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِنۡ أَهۡلَكَنِیَ ٱللَّهُ وَمَن مَّعِیَ أَوۡ رَحِمَنَا فَمَن یُجِیرُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ مِنۡ عَذَابٍ أَلِیمࣲ ۝٢٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, [O Muhammad], "Have you considered: whether Allah should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?"
Abdel Haleem: Say, ‘Just think- regardless of whether God destroys me and my followers or has mercy on us- who will protect the disbelievers from an agonizing torment?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say (O Muhammad): Have ye thought: Whether Allah causeth me (Muhammad) and those with me to perish or hath mercy on us, still, who will protect the disbelievers from a painful doom
The Reality, The Inevitable 69:29 Verb
هَلَكَ عَنِّی سُلۡطَـٰنِیَهۡ ۝٢٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Gone from me is my authority."
Abdel Haleem: and my power has vanished.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: My power hath gone from me
The Reality, The Inevitable 69:5 Verb
فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهۡلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِیَةِ ۝٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So as for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast]
Abdel Haleem: Thamud was destroyed by a deafening blast
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the lightning
The Reality, The Inevitable 69:6 Verb
وَأَمَّا عَادࣱ فَأُهۡلِكُوا۟ بِرِیحࣲ صَرۡصَرٍ عَاتِیَةࣲ ۝٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And as for 'Aad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent win
Abdel Haleem: Ad was destroyed by a furious win
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And as for A'ad, they were destroyed by a fierce roaring wind
Cattle, Livestock 6:26 Verb
وَهُمۡ یَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنۡهُ وَیَنۡءَوۡنَ عَنۡهُۖ وَإِن یُهۡلِكُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَمَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And they prevent [others] from him and are [themselves] remote from him. And they do not destroy except themselves, but they perceive [it] not
Abdel Haleem: and tell others not to listen [to the Quran], while they themselves keep away from it. But they ruin no one but themselves, though they fail to realize this
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And they forbid (men) from it and avoid it, and they ruin none save themselves, though they perceive not
Cattle, Livestock 6:47 Verb
قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتَكُمۡ إِنۡ أَتَىٰكُمۡ عَذَابُ ٱللَّهِ بَغۡتَةً أَوۡ جَهۡرَةً هَلۡ یُهۡلَكُ إِلَّا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٤٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, "Have you considered: if the punishment of Allah should come to you unexpectedly or manifestly, will any be destroyed but the wrongdoing people?"
Abdel Haleem: Say, ‘Think: if the punishment of God should come to you, by surprise or openly, would anyone but the evildoers be destroyed?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say: Can ye see yourselves, if the punishment of Allah come upon you unawares or openly? Would any perish save wrongdoing folk
Cattle, Livestock 6:6 Verb
أَلَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن قَرۡنࣲ مَّكَّنَّـٰهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مَا لَمۡ نُمَكِّن لَّكُمۡ وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ عَلَیۡهِم مِّدۡرَارࣰا وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرَ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهِمۡ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَأَنشَأۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ قَرۡنًا ءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others
Abdel Haleem: Do they not realize how many generations We destroyed before them? We established them in the earth more firmly than you, sent down abundant rain on them from the sky and made running rivers flow at their feet, yet We destroyed them for their misdeeds and raised other generations after them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: See they not how many a generation We destroyed before them, whom We had established in the earth more firmly than We have established you, and We shed on them abundant showers from the sky, and made the rivers flow beneath them. Yet we destroyed them for their sins, and created after them another generation
The Emissaries, Winds Sent Forth 77:16 Verb
أَلَمۡ نُهۡلِكِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Did We not destroy the former peoples
Abdel Haleem: Did We not destroy the first [of them]
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Destroyed We not the former folk
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:129 Verb
قَالُوۤا۟ أُوذِینَا مِن قَبۡلِ أَن تَأۡتِیَنَا وَمِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جِئۡتَنَاۚ قَالَ عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمۡ أَن یُهۡلِكَ عَدُوَّكُمۡ وَیَسۡتَخۡلِفَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَیَنظُرَ كَیۡفَ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They said, "We have been harmed before you came to us and after you have come to us." He said, "Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and grant you succession in the land and see how you will do."
Abdel Haleem: and they replied, ‘We were being persecuted long before you came to us, and since then too.’ He said, ‘Your Lord may well destroy your enemy and make you successors to the land to see how you behave.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They said: We suffered hurt before thou camest unto us, and since thou hast come unto us. He said: It may be that your Lord is going to destroy your adversary and make you viceroys in the earth, that He may see how ye behave
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:155 Verb
وَٱخۡتَارَ مُوسَىٰ قَوۡمَهُۥ سَبۡعِینَ رَجُلࣰا لِّمِیقَـٰتِنَاۖ فَلَمَّاۤ أَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ قَالَ رَبِّ لَوۡ شِئۡتَ أَهۡلَكۡتَهُم مِّن قَبۡلُ وَإِیَّـٰیَۖ أَتُهۡلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلسُّفَهَاۤءُ مِنَّاۤۖ إِنۡ هِیَ إِلَّا فِتۡنَتُكَ تُضِلُّ بِهَا مَن تَشَاۤءُ وَتَهۡدِی مَن تَشَاۤءُۖ أَنتَ وَلِیُّنَا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَاۖ وَأَنتَ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡغَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٥٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment. And when the earthquake seized them, he said, "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before and me [as well]. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is not but Your trial by which You send astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; and You are the best of forgivers
Abdel Haleem: Moses chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment, and when they were seized by trembling, he prayed, ‘My Lord, if You had chosen to do so, You could have destroyed them long before this, and me too, so will You now destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is only a trial from You- through it, You cause whoever You will to stray and guide whoever You will- and You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy on us. You are the best of those who forgive
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointed tryst and, when the trembling came on them, he said: My Lord! If Thou hadst willed Thou hadst destroyed them long before, and me with them. Wilt thou destroy us for that which the ignorant among us did? It is but Thy trial (of us). Thou sendest whom Thou wilt astray and guidest whom Thou wilt: Thou art our Protecting Friend, therefore forgive us and have mercy on us, Thou, the Best of all who show forgiveness
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:173 Verb
أَوۡ تَقُولُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَشۡرَكَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا مِن قَبۡلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّیَّةࣰ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡۖ أَفَتُهۡلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ ۝١٧٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allah before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"
Abdel Haleem: or, ‘It was our forefathers who, before us, ascribed partners to God, and we are only the descendants who came after them: will you destroy us because of falsehoods they invented?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Or lest ye should say: (It is) only (that) our fathers ascribed partners to Allah of old and we were (their) seed after them. Wilt Thou destroy us on account of that which those who follow falsehood did
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:4 Verb
وَكَم مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهَا فَجَاۤءَهَا بَأۡسُنَا بَیَـٰتًا أَوۡ هُمۡ قَاۤىِٕلُونَ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many cities have We destroyed, and Our punishment came to them at night or while they were sleeping at noon
Abdel Haleem: How many towns We have destroyed! Our punishment came to them by night or while they slept in the afternoon
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: How many a township have We destroyed! As a raid by night, or while they slept at noon, Our terror came unto them
The Spoils of War 8:42 Verb
إِذۡ أَنتُم بِٱلۡعُدۡوَةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَهُم بِٱلۡعُدۡوَةِ ٱلۡقُصۡوَىٰ وَٱلرَّكۡبُ أَسۡفَلَ مِنكُمۡۚ وَلَوۡ تَوَاعَدتُّمۡ لَٱخۡتَلَفۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡمِیعَـٰدِ وَلَـٰكِن لِّیَقۡضِیَ ٱللَّهُ أَمۡرࣰا كَانَ مَفۡعُولࣰا لِّیَهۡلِكَ مَنۡ هَلَكَ عَنۢ بَیِّنَةࣲ وَیَحۡیَىٰ مَنۡ حَیَّ عَنۢ بَیِّنَةࣲۗ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَسَمِیعٌ عَلِیمٌ ۝٤٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [Remember] when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the farther side, and the caravan was lower [in position] than you. If you had made an appointment [to meet], you would have missed the appointment. But [it was] so that Allah might accomplish a matter already destined - that those who perished [through disbelief] would perish upon evidence and those who lived [in faith] would live upon evidence; and indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing
Abdel Haleem: Remember when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the far side and the caravan was below you. If you had made an appointment to fight, you would have failed to keep it [but the battle took place] so that God might bring about something already ordained, so that those who were to die might die after seeing a clear proof, and so that those who were to live might live after seeing a clear proof- God is all hearing and all seeing
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: When ye were on the near bank (of the valley) and they were on the yonder bank, and the caravan was below you (on the coast plain). And had ye trysted to meet one another ye surely would have failed to keep the tryst, but (it happened, as it did, without the forethought of either of you) that Allah might conclude a thing that must be done; that he who perished (on that day) might perish by a clear proof (of His Sovereignty) and he who survived might survive by a clear proof (of His Sovereignty). Lo! Allah in truth is Hearer, Knower
The Spoils of War 8:54 Verb
كَدَأۡبِ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَأَغۡرَقۡنَاۤ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ وَكُلࣱّ كَانُوا۟ ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٥٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They denied the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh. And all [of them] were wrongdoers
Abdel Haleem: They are indeed like Pharaoh’s people and those before them, who denied the signs of their Lord: We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned Pharaoh’s people- they were all evildoers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: (Their way is) as the way of Pharaoh's folk and those before them; they denied the revelations of their Lord, so We destroyed them in their sins. And We drowned the folk of Pharaoh. All were evil-doers
The City, This Countryside 90:6 Verb
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
Abdel Haleem: ‘I have squandered great wealth,’ he says
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth
Repentance 9:42 Verb
لَوۡ كَانَ عَرَضࣰا قَرِیبࣰا وَسَفَرࣰا قَاصِدࣰا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَـٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُۚ وَسَیَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡنَا لَخَرَجۡنَا مَعَكُمۡ یُهۡلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٤٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah , "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars
Abdel Haleem: They would certainly have followed you [Prophet] if the benefit was within sight and the journey short, but the distance seemed too great for them. They will swear by God, ‘If we could, we certainly would go out [to battle] with you,’ but they ruin themselves, for God knows that they are lying
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Had it been a near adventure and an easy journey they had followed thee, but the distance seemed too far for them. Yet will they swear by Allah (saying): If we had been able we would surely have set out with you. They destroy their souls, and Allah knoweth that they verily are liars

قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ تَفۡتَؤُا۟ تَذۡكُرُ یُوسُفَ حَتَّىٰ تَكُونَ حَرَضًا أَوۡ تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡهَـٰلِكِینَ ۝٨٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They said, "By Allah , you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."
Abdel Haleem: They said, ‘By God! You will ruin your health if you do not stop thinking of Joseph, or even die.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They said: By Allah, thou wilt never cease remembering Joseph till thy health is ruined or thou art of those who perish
Children of Israel, The Israelites 17:58 Noun
وَإِن مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا نَحۡنُ مُهۡلِكُوهَا قَبۡلَ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ أَوۡ مُعَذِّبُوهَا عَذَابࣰا شَدِیدࣰاۚ كَانَ ذَ ٰلِكَ فِی ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مَسۡطُورࣰا ۝٥٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And there is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed
Abdel Haleem: there is no community We shall not destroy, or punish severely, before the Day of Resurrection- this is written in the Book
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: There is not a township but We shall destroy it ere the Day of Resurrection, or punish it with dire punishment. That is set forth in the Book (of Our decrees)
The Cave 18:59 Noun
وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا۟ وَجَعَلۡنَا لِمَهۡلِكِهِم مَّوۡعِدࣰا ۝٥٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And those cities - We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time
Abdel Haleem: [just like] the former communities We destroyed for doing wrong: We set an appointed time for their destruction
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And (all) those townships! We destroyed them when they did wrong, and We appointed a fixed time for their destruction
The Believers 23:48 Noun
فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَكَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُهۡلَكِینَ ۝٤٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So they denied them and were of those destroyed
Abdel Haleem: and so they called them both liars: they became another ruined people
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: So they denied them, and became of those who were destroyed
The Ant, The Ants 27:49 Noun
قَالُوا۟ تَقَاسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ لَنُبَیِّتَنَّهُۥ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ ثُمَّ لَنَقُولَنَّ لِوَلِیِّهِۦ مَا شَهِدۡنَا مَهۡلِكَ أَهۡلِهِۦ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ ۝٤٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They said, "Take a mutual oath by Allah that we will kill him by night, he and his family. Then we will say to his executor, 'We did not witness the destruction of his family, and indeed, we are truthful.' "
Abdel Haleem: They said, ‘Swear by God: we shall attack this man and his household in the night, then say to his next of kin, “We did not witness the destruction of his household. We are telling the truth.”’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They said: Swear one to another by Allah that we verily will attack him and his household by night, and afterward we will surely say unto his friend: We witnessed not the destruction of his household. And lo! we are truthtellers
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:59 Noun
وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ مُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ یَبۡعَثَ فِیۤ أُمِّهَا رَسُولࣰا یَتۡلُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَاۚ وَمَا كُنَّا مُهۡلِكِی ٱلۡقُرَىٰۤ إِلَّا وَأَهۡلُهَا ظَـٰلِمُونَ ۝٥٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And never would your Lord have destroyed the cities until He had sent to their mother a messenger reciting to them Our verses. And We would not destroy the cities except while their people were wrongdoers
Abdel Haleem: Your Lord would never destroy towns without first raising a messenger in their midst to recite Our messages to them, nor would We destroy towns unless their inhabitants were evildoers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And never did thy Lord destroy the townships, till He had raised up in their mother(-town) a messenger reciting unto them Our revelations. And never did We destroy the townships unless the folk thereof were evil-doers
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:88 Noun
وَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَۘ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ كُلُّ شَیۡءٍ هَالِكٌ إِلَّا وَجۡهَهُۥۚ لَهُ ٱلۡحُكۡمُ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٨٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And do not invoke with Allah another deity. There is no deity except Him. Everything will be destroyed except His Face. His is the judgement, and to Him you will be returned
Abdel Haleem: Do not call out to any other god beside God, for there is no god but Him. Everything will perish except His Face. His is the Judgement and to Him you shall all be brought back
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And cry not unto any other god along with Allah. There is no Allah save Him. Everything will perish save His countenance. His is the command, and unto Him ye will be brought back
The Spider 29:31 Noun
وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُنَاۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ بِٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا مُهۡلِكُوۤا۟ أَهۡلِ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡقَرۡیَةِۖ إِنَّ أَهۡلَهَا كَانُوا۟ ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٣١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when Our messengers came to Abraham with the good tidings, they said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of that Lot's city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers."
Abdel Haleem: When Our mes-sengers brought the good news [of the birth of a son] to Abraham,they told him, ‘We are about to destroy the people of that town. They are wrongdoers.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when Our messengers brought Abraham the good news, they said: Lo! we are about to destroy the people of that township, for its people are wrong-doers
The Cow 2:195 Noun
وَأَنفِقُوا۟ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تُلۡقُوا۟ بِأَیۡدِیكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلتَّهۡلُكَةِ وَأَحۡسِنُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٩٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good
Abdel Haleem: Spend in God’s cause: do not contribute to your destruction with your own hands, but do good, for God loves those who do good
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Spend your wealth for the cause of Allah, and be not cast by your own hands to ruin; and do good. Lo! Allah loveth the beneficent
Cattle, Livestock 6:131 Noun
ذَ ٰلِكَ أَن لَّمۡ یَكُن رَّبُّكَ مُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ بِظُلۡمࣲ وَأَهۡلُهَا غَـٰفِلُونَ ۝١٣١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): That is because your Lord would not destroy the cities for wrongdoing while their people were unaware
Abdel Haleem: your Lord would not destroy towns for their wrongdoing if they had not been warned
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: This is because thy Lord destroyeth not the townships arbitrarily while their people are unconscious (of the wrong they do)
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:164 Noun
وَإِذۡ قَالَتۡ أُمَّةࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوۡمًا ٱللَّهُ مُهۡلِكُهُمۡ أَوۡ مُعَذِّبُهُمۡ عَذَابࣰا شَدِیدࣰاۖ قَالُوا۟ مَعۡذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمۡ وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allah is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him."
Abdel Haleem: how, when some of them asked [their preachers], ‘Why do you bother preaching to people God will destroy, or at least punish severely?’ [the preachers] answered, ‘In order to be free from your Lord’s blame, and so that they may perhaps take heed.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when a community among them said: Why preach ye to a folk whom Allah is about to destroy or punish with an awful doom, they said: In order to be free from guilt before your Lord, and that haply they may ward off (evil)
