1 Judgment to overtake Opponents

ٱقۡتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلۡقَمَرُ ۝١

The Hour has drawn near, and the moon is split asunder.

iq'tarabati l-sāʿatu wa-inshaqqa l-qamar

وَإِن یَرَوۡا۟ ءَایَةࣰ یُعۡرِضُوا۟ وَیَقُولُوا۟ سِحۡرࣱ مُّسۡتَمِرࣱّ ۝٢

And if they see a sign they turn away and they say, 'Continuous magic.'

wa-in yaraw āyatan yuʿ'riḍū wayaqūlū siḥ'run mus'tamirru

وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوۤا۟ أَهۡوَاۤءَهُمۡۚ وَكُلُّ أَمۡرࣲ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ ۝٣

And they denied and followed their lusts; and every affair is settled.

wakadhabū wa-ittabaʿū ahwāahum wakullu amrin mus'taqirru

وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَنۢبَاۤءِ مَا فِیهِ مُزۡدَجَرٌ ۝٤

And surely, certainly there came to them of the information, that in which is restraint.

walaqad jāahum mina l-anbāi mā fīhi muz'dajaru

حِكۡمَةُۢ بَـٰلِغَةࣱۖ فَمَا تُغۡنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ ۝٥

Reaching wisdom, and the warnings do not avail.

ḥik'matun bālighatun famā tugh'ni l-nudhur

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡۘ یَوۡمَ یَدۡعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَیۡءࣲ نُّكُرٍ ۝٦

So turn away from them. On the day the caller will call to a terrible thing.

fatawalla ʿanhum yawma yadʿu l-dāʿi ilā shayin nukuri

خُشَّعًا أَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ یَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمۡ جَرَادࣱ مُّنتَشِرࣱ ۝٧

Their eyes humbled, they will come out of the graves as if they were dispersed locusts.

khushaʿan abṣāruhum yakhrujūna mina l-ajdāthi ka-annahum jarādun muntashiru

مُّهۡطِعِینَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِۖ یَقُولُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا یَوۡمٌ عَسِرࣱ ۝٨

Hurrying to the caller. The disbelievers will say, 'This is a difficult day.'

muh'ṭiʿīna ilā l-dāʿi yaqūlu l-kāfirūna hādhā yawmun ʿasiru

۞ كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحࣲ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبۡدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجۡنُونࣱ وَٱزۡدُجِرَ ۝٩

The people of Noah denied before them, and they called Our servant a liar; and they said, 'Mad.' And he was chid.

kadhabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin fakadhabū ʿabdanā waqālū majnūnun wa-uz'dujir

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥۤ أَنِّی مَغۡلُوبࣱ فَٱنتَصِرۡ ۝١٠

So he called on his Lord, saying, 'I am overcome, so help.'

fadaʿā rabbahu annī maghlūbun fa-intaṣi

فَفَتَحۡنَاۤ أَبۡوَ ٰبَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ بِمَاۤءࣲ مُّنۡهَمِرࣲ ۝١١

Then We opened the gates of heaven with water pouring forth.

fafataḥnā abwāba l-samāi bimāin mun'hamiri

وَفَجَّرۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ عُیُونࣰا فَٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡمَاۤءُ عَلَىٰۤ أَمۡرࣲ قَدۡ قُدِرَ ۝١٢

And We made the earth flow forth in springs, and the water met upon a certainly decreed matter.

wafajjarnā l-arḍa ʿuyūnan fal-taqā l-māu ʿalā amrin qad qudir

وَحَمَلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلۡوَ ٰحࣲ وَدُسُرࣲ ۝١٣

And We carried him on a possessor of planks and nails,

waḥamalnāhu ʿalā dhāti alwāḥin wadusuri

تَجۡرِی بِأَعۡیُنِنَا جَزَاۤءࣰ لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ ۝١٤

Sailing in Our eyes, a recompense for he who was disbelieved.

tajrī bi-aʿyuninā jazāan liman kāna kufir

وَلَقَد تَّرَكۡنَـٰهَاۤ ءَایَةࣰ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ ۝١٥

And surely, certainly We left it as a sign, so is there anyone who remembers?

walaqad taraknāhā āyatan fahal min muddakiri

فَكَیۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِی وَنُذُرِ ۝١٦

And how was My punishment and My warnings?

fakayfa kāna ʿadhābī wanudhur

وَلَقَدۡ یَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ ۝١٧

And surely, certainly We made the Quran easy to remember, so is there anyone who remembers?

walaqad yassarnā l-qur'āna lildhik'ri fahal min muddakiri

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادࣱ فَكَیۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِی وَنُذُرِ ۝١٨

'Ad denied; and how was My punishment and My warnings?

kadhabat ʿādun fakayfa kāna ʿadhābī wanudhur

إِنَّاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ رِیحࣰا صَرۡصَرࣰا فِی یَوۡمِ نَحۡسࣲ مُّسۡتَمِرࣲّ ۝١٩

Indeed We, We sent upon them an intensely cold wind in a day of continuous misfortune.

innā arsalnā ʿalayhim rīḥan ṣarṣaran fī yawmi naḥsin mus'tamirri

تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمۡ أَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلࣲ مُّنقَعِرࣲ ۝٢٠

Plucking up mankind as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees.

tanziʿu l-nāsa ka-annahum aʿjāzu nakhlin munqaʿiri

فَكَیۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِی وَنُذُرِ ۝٢١

And how was My punishment and My warnings?

fakayfa kāna ʿadhābī wanudhur

وَلَقَدۡ یَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ ۝٢٢

And surely, certainly We made the Quran easy to remember, so is there anyone who remembers?

walaqad yassarnā l-qur'āna lildhik'ri fahal min muddakiri

2 Thamud and Lot's People

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ۝٢٣

Thamud called the warnings lies,

kadhabat thamūdu bil-nudhur

فَقَالُوۤا۟ أَبَشَرࣰا مِّنَّا وَ ٰحِدࣰا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥۤ إِنَّاۤ إِذࣰا لَّفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ وَسُعُرٍ ۝٢٤

And they said, 'A mortal, one of us, shall we follow him? Indeed, we then will surely be in error and madness.

faqālū abasharan minnā wāḥidan nattabiʿuhu innā idhan lafī ḍalālin wasuʿuri

أَءُلۡقِیَ ٱلذِّكۡرُ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۢ بَیۡنِنَا بَلۡ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرࣱ ۝٢٥

Has the reminder been cast upon him from among us? Nay, he is an insolent liar.'

a-ul'qiya l-dhik'ru ʿalayhi min bayninā bal huwa kadhābun ashiru

سَیَعۡلَمُونَ غَدࣰا مَّنِ ٱلۡكَذَّابُ ٱلۡأَشِرُ ۝٢٦

Soon they will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar.

sayaʿlamūna ghadan mani l-kadhābu l-ashir

إِنَّا مُرۡسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتۡنَةࣰ لَّهُمۡ فَٱرۡتَقِبۡهُمۡ وَٱصۡطَبِرۡ ۝٢٧

Indeed, We are sending the she-camel, a trial for them, so watch them and be patient.

innā mur'silū l-nāqati fit'natan lahum fa-ir'taqib'hum wa-iṣ'ṭabi

وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ أَنَّ ٱلۡمَاۤءَ قِسۡمَةُۢ بَیۡنَهُمۡۖ كُلُّ شِرۡبࣲ مُّحۡتَضَرࣱ ۝٢٨

And inform them that the water will be divided between them; each draught will be attended.

wanabbi'hum anna l-māa qis'matun baynahum kullu shir'bin muḥ'taḍaru

فَنَادَوۡا۟ صَاحِبَهُمۡ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ ۝٢٩

Then they called their companion, and he took and hamstrung.

fanādaw ṣāḥibahum fataʿāṭā faʿaqar

فَكَیۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِی وَنُذُرِ ۝٣٠

And how was My punishment and My warnings?

fakayfa kāna ʿadhābī wanudhur

إِنَّاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ صَیۡحَةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِیمِ ٱلۡمُحۡتَظِرِ ۝٣١

Indeed We, We sent upon them one noise, and they were like the dry plants of the fold builder.

innā arsalnā ʿalayhim ṣayḥatan wāḥidatan fakānū kahashīmi l-muḥ'taẓir

وَلَقَدۡ یَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ ۝٣٢

And surely, certainly We made the Quran easy to remember, so is there anyone who remembers?

walaqad yassarnā l-qur'āna lildhik'ri fahal min muddakiri

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطِۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ۝٣٣

The people of Lot called the warnings lies.

kadhabat qawmu lūṭin bil-nudhur

إِنَّاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ حَاصِبًا إِلَّاۤ ءَالَ لُوطࣲۖ نَّجَّیۡنَـٰهُم بِسَحَرࣲ ۝٣٤

Indeed We, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot, We saved them before dawn,

innā arsalnā ʿalayhim ḥāṣiban illā āla lūṭin najjaynāhum bisaḥari

نِّعۡمَةࣰ مِّنۡ عِندِنَاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی مَن شَكَرَ ۝٣٥

A favour from Us; thus We recompense he who is thankful.

niʿ'matan min ʿindinā kadhālika najzī man shakar

وَلَقَدۡ أَنذَرَهُم بَطۡشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوۡا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ۝٣٦

And surely, certainly he warned them of Our assault, and they doubted the warnings.

walaqad andharahum baṭshatanā fatamāraw bil-nudhur

وَلَقَدۡ رَ ٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَیۡفِهِۦ فَطَمَسۡنَاۤ أَعۡیُنَهُمۡ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِی وَنُذُرِ ۝٣٧

And surely, certainly they endeavoured to turn him from his guests; so We effaced their eyes. So taste My punishment and My warnings.

walaqad rāwadūhu ʿan ḍayfihi faṭamasnā aʿyunahum fadhūqū ʿadhābī wanudhur

وَلَقَدۡ صَبَّحَهُم بُكۡرَةً عَذَابࣱ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ ۝٣٨

And surely, certainly a settled punishment came to them in the morning between dawn and sunrise.

walaqad ṣabbaḥahum buk'ratan ʿadhābun mus'taqirru

فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِی وَنُذُرِ ۝٣٩

So taste My punishment and My warnings.

fadhūqū ʿadhābī wanudhur

وَلَقَدۡ یَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ ۝٤٠

And surely, certainly We made the Quran easy to remember, so is there anyone who remembers?

walaqad yassarnā l-qur'āna lildhik'ri fahal min muddakiri

3 Pharaoh and the Prophet's Opponents

وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ ۝٤١

And surely, certainly the warnings came to the people of Pharaoh.

walaqad jāa āla fir'ʿawna l-nudhur

كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُمۡ أَخۡذَ عَزِیزࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرٍ ۝٤٢

They called Our signs lies, all of them, so We seized them, a seizing of a mighty, powerful one.

kadhabū biāyātinā kullihā fa-akhadhnāhum akhdha ʿazīzin muq'tadiri

أَكُفَّارُكُمۡ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكُمۡ أَمۡ لَكُم بَرَاۤءَةࣱ فِی ٱلزُّبُرِ ۝٤٣

Are your disbelievers better than those? Or is there for you an immunity in the scriptures?

akuffārukum khayrun min ulāikum am lakum barāatun fī l-zubur

أَمۡ یَقُولُونَ نَحۡنُ جَمِیعࣱ مُّنتَصِرࣱ ۝٤٤

Or do they say, 'We are an army helping ourselves.’?

am yaqūlūna naḥnu jamīʿun muntaṣiru

سَیُهۡزَمُ ٱلۡجَمۡعُ وَیُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ ۝٤٥

Soon the army will be routed and will turn the back.

sayuh'zamu l-jamʿu wayuwallūna l-dubur

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوۡعِدُهُمۡ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدۡهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ ۝٤٦

Nay, the Hour is their promised time. And the Hour is most grievous and most bitter.

bali l-sāʿatu mawʿiduhum wal-sāʿatu adhā wa-amarr

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ وَسُعُرࣲ ۝٤٧

Indeed, the sinners are in error and madness.

inna l-muj'rimīna fī ḍalālin wasuʿuri

یَوۡمَ یُسۡحَبُونَ فِی ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمۡ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ ۝٤٨

On the day they will be dragged into the fire upon their faces. Taste the touch of Hell.

yawma yus'ḥabūna fī l-nāri ʿalā wujūhihim dhūqū massa saqar

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَیۡءٍ خَلَقۡنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرࣲ ۝٤٩

Indeed We, everything, We created it by decree,

innā kulla shayin khalaqnāhu biqadari

وَمَاۤ أَمۡرُنَاۤ إِلَّا وَ ٰحِدَةࣱ كَلَمۡحِۭ بِٱلۡبَصَرِ ۝٥٠

And Our command is not except one, like the glance with the eye.

wamā amrunā illā wāḥidatun kalamḥin bil-baṣar

وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَاۤ أَشۡیَاعَكُمۡ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ ۝٥١

And surely, certainly We destroyed your sects, so is there anyone who remembers?

walaqad ahlaknā ashyāʿakum fahal min muddakiri

وَكُلُّ شَیۡءࣲ فَعَلُوهُ فِی ٱلزُّبُرِ ۝٥٢

And everything they did is in the scriptures;

wakullu shayin faʿalūhu fī l-zubur

وَكُلُّ صَغِیرࣲ وَكَبِیرࣲ مُّسۡتَطَرٌ ۝٥٣

And every small and great is written.

wakullu ṣaghīrin wakabīrin mus'taṭaru

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَنَهَرࣲ ۝٥٤

Indeed, those who fear are in gardens and rivers,

inna l-mutaqīna fī jannātin wanahari

فِی مَقۡعَدِ صِدۡقٍ عِندَ مَلِیكࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرِۭ ۝٥٥

In a seat of truth, with a powerful king.

fī maqʿadi ṣid'qin ʿinda malīkin muq'tadiri
