1 Ultimate Triumph of Unity

ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَجَعَلَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ وَٱلنُّورَۖ ثُمَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمۡ یَعۡدِلُونَ ۝١

- Al Ana'm [Livestock]Praise be to God, who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light; but, the unbelievers regard others as equal to their Lord.

al-ḥamdu lillahi alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wajaʿala l-ẓulumāti wal-nūra thumma alladhīna kafarū birabbihim yaʿdilūn

هُوَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُم مِّن طِینࣲ ثُمَّ قَضَىٰۤ أَجَلࣰاۖ وَأَجَلࣱ مُّسَمًّى عِندَهُۥۖ ثُمَّ أَنتُمۡ تَمۡتَرُونَ ۝٢

He created you out of clay and specified a span of time for you; a span, known only to him; however you still doubt.

huwa alladhī khalaqakum min ṭīnin thumma qaḍā ajalan wa-ajalun musamman ʿindahu thumma antum tamtarūn

وَهُوَ ٱللَّهُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَفِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَعۡلَمُ سِرَّكُمۡ وَجَهۡرَكُمۡ وَیَعۡلَمُ مَا تَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٣

He is God in the heavens and on earth; He knows all your secrets and what you reveal, and He knows what you earn.

wahuwa l-lahu fī l-samāwāti wafī l-arḍi yaʿlamu sirrakum wajahrakum wayaʿlamu mā taksibūn

وَمَا تَأۡتِیهِم مِّنۡ ءَایَةࣲ مِّنۡ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤

Yet every time one of their Lord's messages came to them they ignored it.

wamā tatīhim min āyatin min āyāti rabbihim illā kānū ʿanhā muʿ'riḍīn

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ یَأۡتِیهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰۤؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٥

They denied the Truth when it came to them; however, in time, they will come to understand the very thing they ridiculed.

faqad kadhabū bil-ḥaqi lammā jāahum fasawfa yatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

أَلَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن قَرۡنࣲ مَّكَّنَّـٰهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مَا لَمۡ نُمَكِّن لَّكُمۡ وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ عَلَیۡهِم مِّدۡرَارࣰا وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرَ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهِمۡ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَأَنشَأۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ قَرۡنًا ءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦

Do they not realize how many generations We destroyed before them--to whom We gave a [bountiful] place on earth, more so than you, and to whom We sent abundant rain, and at whose feet We made running rivers flow? We destroyed them because of their sins, and We raised up other generations after them.

alam yaraw kam ahlaknā min qablihim min qarnin makkannāhum fī l-arḍi mā lam numakkin lakum wa-arsalnā l-samāa ʿalayhim mid'rāran wajaʿalnā l-anhāra tajrī min taḥtihim fa-ahlaknāhum bidhunūbihim wa-anshanā min baʿdihim qarnan ākharīn

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ كِتَـٰبࣰا فِی قِرۡطَاسࣲ فَلَمَسُوهُ بِأَیۡدِیهِمۡ لَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٧

Even if We had sent down to you [Prophet] a written scripture that they could have touched with their own hands, the unbelievers would have said, "This is clearly nothing but a trick."

walaw nazzalnā ʿalayka kitāban fī qir'ṭāsin falamasūhu bi-aydīhim laqāla alladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnu

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ مَلَكࣱۖ وَلَوۡ أَنزَلۡنَا مَلَكࣰا لَّقُضِیَ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ ثُمَّ لَا یُنظَرُونَ ۝٨

They say, "Why was no angel sent down to him?" But had We sent down an angel, it would have been over, with no further time given to them

waqālū lawlā unzila ʿalayhi malakun walaw anzalnā malakan laquḍiya l-amru thumma lā yunẓarūn

وَلَوۡ جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ مَلَكࣰا لَّجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ رَجُلࣰا وَلَلَبَسۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّا یَلۡبِسُونَ ۝٩

and, If We had sent an angel, We would have certainly made him appear as a man, and thus We would have only confused them in the same way as they are now confusing themselves.

walaw jaʿalnāhu malakan lajaʿalnāhu rajulan walalabasnā ʿalayhim mā yalbisūn

وَلَقَدِ ٱسۡتُهۡزِئَ بِرُسُلࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَحَاقَ بِٱلَّذِینَ سَخِرُوا۟ مِنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝١٠

Messengers have been ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were overwhelmed by the very punishment they mocked.

walaqadi us'tuh'zi-a birusulin min qablika faḥāqa bi-alladhīna sakhirū min'hum mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

2 Greatness of Divine Mercy

قُلۡ سِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ثُمَّ ٱنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ۝١١

Say, "Travel throughout the land and see what finally happened to those who rejected the truth."

qul sīrū fī l-arḍi thumma unẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīn

قُل لِّمَن مَّا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ قُل لِّلَّهِۚ كَتَبَ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَةَۚ لَیَجۡمَعَنَّكُمۡ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهِۚ ٱلَّذِینَ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٢

Say, "To whom belongs everything that is in the heavens and on earth?" Say, "God! He decreed Himself to be Merciful-to-all." However, He will summon all of you to a definite Day of Resurrection. Those who have lost their soul will not believe.

qul liman mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi qul lillahi kataba ʿalā nafsihi l-raḥmata layajmaʿannakum ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati lā rayba fīhi alladhīna khasirū anfusahum fahum lā yu'minūn

۞ وَلَهُۥ مَا سَكَنَ فِی ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝١٣

All that rests during the night and the day belong To Him and He alone, is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.

walahu mā sakana fī al-layli wal-nahāri wahuwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

قُلۡ أَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ أَتَّخِذُ وَلِیࣰّا فَاطِرِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَهُوَ یُطۡعِمُ وَلَا یُطۡعَمُۗ قُلۡ إِنِّیۤ أُمِرۡتُ أَنۡ أَكُونَ أَوَّلَ مَنۡ أَسۡلَمَۖ وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٤

Say, "Why should I take a master for myself other than God, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, when it is He who feeds and needs not to be fed?" Say, "I am commanded to be the first [among you] to submit myself to Him and not be among the idolaters."

qul aghayra l-lahi attakhidhu waliyyan fāṭiri l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wahuwa yuṭ'ʿimu walā yuṭ'ʿamu qul innī umir'tu an akūna awwala man aslama walā takūnanna mina l-mush'rikīn

قُلۡ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ إِنۡ عَصَیۡتُ رَبِّی عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥

Say, "If I disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of the Great Day."

qul innī akhāfu in ʿaṣaytu rabbī ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

مَّن یُصۡرَفۡ عَنۡهُ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ فَقَدۡ رَحِمَهُۥۚ وَذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٦

God will be truly merciful to whoever is spared on that Day. This is the greatest victory!

man yuṣ'raf ʿanhu yawma-idhin faqad raḥimahu wadhālika l-fawzu l-mubīn

وَإِن یَمۡسَسۡكَ ٱللَّهُ بِضُرࣲّ فَلَا كَاشِفَ لَهُۥۤ إِلَّا هُوَۖ وَإِن یَمۡسَسۡكَ بِخَیۡرࣲ فَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝١٧

If God touches you with hardship, only He can remove it; and if He blesses you, it is His choice. He can do anything He wills.

wa-in yamsaska l-lahu biḍurrin falā kāshifa lahu illā huwa wa-in yamsaska bikhayrin fahuwa ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

وَهُوَ ٱلۡقَاهِرُ فَوۡقَ عِبَادِهِۦۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ٱلۡخَبِیرُ ۝١٨

He alone is the Supreme Master over His creatures and He alone is All-Wise, the All-Aware.

wahuwa l-qāhiru fawqa ʿibādihi wahuwa l-ḥakīmu l-khabīr

قُلۡ أَیُّ شَیۡءٍ أَكۡبَرُ شَهَـٰدَةࣰۖ قُلِ ٱللَّهُۖ شَهِیدُۢ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكُمۡۚ وَأُوحِیَ إِلَیَّ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ لِأُنذِرَكُم بِهِۦ وَمَنۢ بَلَغَۚ أَىِٕنَّكُمۡ لَتَشۡهَدُونَ أَنَّ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةً أُخۡرَىٰۚ قُل لَّاۤ أَشۡهَدُۚ قُلۡ إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱ وَإِنَّنِی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١٩

Say, "What counts most as a witness to the truth?" Say, "God is witness between you and me. This Qur'an has been revealed to me to warn you and everyone it reaches." Could you in truth bear witness that there are other gods besides God? Say, "I bear no [such] witness." Say, "He is only One God, and I have nothing to do with whatever you associate with Him."

qul ayyu shayin akbaru shahādatan quli l-lahu shahīdun baynī wabaynakum waūḥiya ilayya hādhā l-qur'ānu li-undhirakum bihi waman balagha a-innakum latashhadūna anna maʿa l-lahi ālihatan ukh'rā qul lā ashhadu qul innamā huwa ilāhun wāḥidun wa-innanī barīon mimmā tush'rikūn

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یَعۡرِفُونَهُۥ كَمَا یَعۡرِفُونَ أَبۡنَاۤءَهُمُۘ ٱلَّذِینَ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٢٠

Those to whom We have previously given the Book before, know this as well as they know their own children; yet those who deceive themselves refuse to believe.

alladhīna ātaynāhumu l-kitāba yaʿrifūnahu kamā yaʿrifūna abnāahumu alladhīna khasirū anfusahum fahum lā yu'minūn

3 Polytheists' witness against self

وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوۡ كَذَّبَ بِءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٢١

Who does greater wrong than someone who fabricates lies against God or denies His revelations? Those who do such wrong will not prosper.

waman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban aw kadhaba biāyātihi innahu lā yuf'liḥu l-ẓālimūn

وَیَوۡمَ نَحۡشُرُهُمۡ جَمِیعࣰا ثُمَّ نَقُولُ لِلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوۤا۟ أَیۡنَ شُرَكَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ كُنتُمۡ تَزۡعُمُونَ ۝٢٢

One Day We will gather them all together and say to the idolaters, "Where are those beings you imagined to be partners with God?"

wayawma naḥshuruhum jamīʿan thumma naqūlu lilladhīna ashrakū ayna shurakāukumu alladhīna kuntum tazʿumūn

ثُمَّ لَمۡ تَكُن فِتۡنَتُهُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوا۟ وَٱللَّهِ رَبِّنَا مَا كُنَّا مُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٢٣

In their utter confusion, they will only say, "By God, our Lord, we did not mean to associate partners with Him."

thumma lam takun fit'natuhum illā an qālū wal-lahi rabbinā mā kunnā mush'rikīn

ٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَذَبُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡۚ وَضَلَّ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٢٤

See how they have lied to themselves and how the gods they invented have abandoned them.

unẓur kayfa kadhabū ʿalā anfusihim waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūn

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَسۡتَمِعُ إِلَیۡكَۖ وَجَعَلۡنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ أَكِنَّةً أَن یَفۡقَهُوهُ وَفِیۤ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ وَقۡرࣰاۚ وَإِن یَرَوۡا۟ كُلَّ ءَایَةࣲ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِهَاۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءُوكَ یُجَـٰدِلُونَكَ یَقُولُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّاۤ أَسَـٰطِیرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٥

Among them are some who [appear] to listen to your [message, Prophet], but We have laid covers over their hearts and deafness in their ears which prevent them from grasping the truth. Even if they saw every sign, they would still not believe it. When they come to you, they argue with you. The unbelievers say, "These are nothing but fairy tales."

wamin'hum man yastamiʿu ilayka wajaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wafī ādhānihim waqran wa-in yaraw kulla āyatin lā yu'minū bihā ḥattā idhā jāūka yujādilūnaka yaqūlu alladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā asāṭīru l-awalīn

وَهُمۡ یَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنۡهُ وَیَنۡءَوۡنَ عَنۡهُۖ وَإِن یُهۡلِكُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَمَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٦

They tell others not to listen, while they stay away. They destroy no one but themselves, though they fail to realize this.

wahum yanhawna ʿanhu wayanawna ʿanhu wa-in yuh'likūna illā anfusahum wamā yashʿurūn

وَلَوۡ تَرَىٰۤ إِذۡ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰلَیۡتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢٧

If you could only see them when they will have to stand before the fire and say, "If only we were brought back, we would not reject the revelations of our Lord, but would be among the believers."

walaw tarā idh wuqifū ʿalā l-nāri faqālū yālaytanā nuraddu walā nukadhiba biāyāti rabbinā wanakūna mina l-mu'minīn

بَلۡ بَدَا لَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُخۡفُونَ مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَلَوۡ رُدُّوا۟ لَعَادُوا۟ لِمَا نُهُوا۟ عَنۡهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٨

The truth they used to conceal will become obvious to them, and if they were brought back, they would return to the very thing that was forbidden to them. They are such liars!

bal badā lahum mā kānū yukh'fūna min qablu walaw ruddū laʿādū limā nuhū ʿanhu wa-innahum lakādhibūn

وَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هِیَ إِلَّا حَیَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَبۡعُوثِینَ ۝٢٩

Others used to say, "There is nothing beyond our life in this world. We will not be raised from the dead."

waqālū in hiya illā ḥayātunā l-dun'yā wamā naḥnu bimabʿūthīn

وَلَوۡ تَرَىٰۤ إِذۡ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡۚ قَالَ أَلَیۡسَ هَـٰذَا بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّنَاۚ قَالَ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٣٠

If you could only see when they are made to stand before their Lord, [and] He will say, "Is not this the Truth?" They will answer, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the miseries that come from your having denied the truth."

walaw tarā idh wuqifū ʿalā rabbihim qāla alaysa hādhā bil-ḥaqi qālū balā warabbinā qāla fadhūqū l-ʿadhāba bimā kuntum takfurūn

4 Rejection of Truth

قَدۡ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِلِقَاۤءِ ٱللَّهِۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَتۡهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغۡتَةࣰ قَالُوا۟ یَـٰحَسۡرَتَنَا عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطۡنَا فِیهَا وَهُمۡ یَحۡمِلُونَ أَوۡزَارَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِمۡۚ أَلَا سَاۤءَ مَا یَزِرُونَ ۝٣١

Those who deny the encounter with their Lord, until, when the Last Hour suddenly comes upon them, are lost. They cry, "How sorry we are for ignoring this!" They will bear the burdens of their sins on their backs. How dreadful those burdens will be!

qad khasira alladhīna kadhabū biliqāi l-lahi ḥattā idhā jāathumu l-sāʿatu baghtatan qālū yāḥasratanā ʿalā mā farraṭnā fīhā wahum yaḥmilūna awzārahum ʿalā ẓuhūrihim alā sāa mā yazirūn

وَمَا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۤ إِلَّا لَعِبࣱ وَلَهۡوࣱۖ وَلَلدَّارُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٣٢

The life of this world is nothing but play and amusement; and the life in the Hereafter is best for those who are mindful of God. Do you not understand?

wamā l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā illā laʿibun walahwun walalddāru l-ākhiratu khayrun lilladhīna yattaqūna afalā taʿqilūn

قَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ إِنَّهُۥ لَیَحۡزُنُكَ ٱلَّذِی یَقُولُونَۖ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَا یُكَذِّبُونَكَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ یَجۡحَدُونَ ۝٣٣

We know that you are saddened by what these people say [Prophet]. It is not you they disbelieve; these unjust people are denying God's revelations.

qad naʿlamu innahu layaḥzunuka alladhī yaqūlūna fa-innahum lā yukadhibūnaka walākinna l-ẓālimīna biāyāti l-lahi yajḥadūn

وَلَقَدۡ كُذِّبَتۡ رُسُلࣱ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَصَبَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا كُذِّبُوا۟ وَأُوذُوا۟ حَتَّىٰۤ أَتَىٰهُمۡ نَصۡرُنَاۚ وَلَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكَ مِن نَّبَإِی۟ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٣٤

There were other messengers before you who were disbelieved and who patiently endured all the lying accusations and persecution until We gave them victory. No one can alter God's words! You have already learned some of what happened to these messengers.

walaqad kudhibat rusulun min qablika faṣabarū ʿalā mā kudhibū waūdhū ḥattā atāhum naṣrunā walā mubaddila likalimāti l-lahi walaqad jāaka min naba-i l-mur'salīn

وَإِن كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَیۡكَ إِعۡرَاضُهُمۡ فَإِنِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡتَ أَن تَبۡتَغِیَ نَفَقࣰا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَوۡ سُلَّمࣰا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَتَأۡتِیَهُم بِءَایَةࣲۚ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ لَجَمَعَهُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰۚ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِینَ ۝٣٥

If you find rejection by the unbelievers so unbearable, then seek a tunnel into the ground or a ladder into the sky in order to bring them a sign, but [remember that], had God willed it, He would have guided all of them. Do not be among the ignorant.

wa-in kāna kabura ʿalayka iʿ'rāḍuhum fa-ini is'taṭaʿta an tabtaghiya nafaqan fī l-arḍi aw sullaman fī l-samāi fatatiyahum biāyatin walaw shāa l-lahu lajamaʿahum ʿalā l-hudā falā takūnanna mina l-jāhilīn

۞ إِنَّمَا یَسۡتَجِیبُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَسۡمَعُونَۘ وَٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ یَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ إِلَیۡهِ یُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٣٦

Only those who can hear will respond; and as for the dead, God [alone] will raise them from the dead, and to Him they will return.

innamā yastajību alladhīna yasmaʿūna wal-mawtā yabʿathuhumu l-lahu thumma ilayhi yur'jaʿūn

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۚ قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَادِرٌ عَلَىٰۤ أَن یُنَزِّلَ ءَایَةࣰ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٧

They also say, "Why has no miraculous sign been sent down to him from his Lord" Say, "God has the power to send down a sign," though most people do not know this.

waqālū lawlā nuzzila ʿalayhi āyatun min rabbihi qul inna l-laha qādirun ʿalā an yunazzila āyatan walākinna aktharahum lā yaʿlamūn

وَمَا مِن دَاۤبَّةࣲ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا طَـٰۤىِٕرࣲ یَطِیرُ بِجَنَاحَیۡهِ إِلَّاۤ أُمَمٌ أَمۡثَالُكُمۚ مَّا فَرَّطۡنَا فِی ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مِن شَیۡءࣲۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یُحۡشَرُونَ ۝٣٨

Every beast that crawls on the earth and every birds that flies with its two wings have formed communities like you. We have left nothing out of the Book. Later, they will be gathered to their Lord.

wamā min dābbatin fī l-arḍi walā ṭāirin yaṭīru bijanāḥayhi illā umamun amthālukum mā farraṭnā fī l-kitābi min shayin thumma ilā rabbihim yuḥ'sharūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا صُمࣱّ وَبُكۡمࣱ فِی ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِۗ مَن یَشَإِ ٱللَّهُ یُضۡلِلۡهُ وَمَن یَشَأۡ یَجۡعَلۡهُ عَلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٣٩

Those who reject Our messages are deaf, dumb and deep in darkness. Whomever God wills, He lets go astray, and whomever He wills, He places upon a straight path.

wa-alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā ṣummun wabuk'mun fī l-ẓulumāti man yasha-i l-lahu yuḍ'lil'hu waman yasha yajʿalhu ʿalā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتَكُمۡ إِنۡ أَتَىٰكُمۡ عَذَابُ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡ أَتَتۡكُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ أَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ تَدۡعُونَ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٤٠

Say, "Can you see yourselves invoking any but God when God's punishment falls on you [in this world], or when the Last Hour comes upon you, if you are truthful?

qul ara-aytakum in atākum ʿadhābu l-lahi aw atatkumu l-sāʿatu aghayra l-lahi tadʿūna in kuntum ṣādiqīn

بَلۡ إِیَّاهُ تَدۡعُونَ فَیَكۡشِفُ مَا تَدۡعُونَ إِلَیۡهِ إِن شَاۤءَ وَتَنسَوۡنَ مَا تُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٤١

No! It is to Him alone that you would call. If it were His will, He may remove whatever harm that caused you to call on Him; and you will have forgotten all that you now associate with Him.

bal iyyāhu tadʿūna fayakshifu mā tadʿūna ilayhi in shāa watansawna mā tush'rikūn

5 Consequences of Rejection

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰۤ أُمَمࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُم بِٱلۡبَأۡسَاۤءِ وَٱلضَّرَّاۤءِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَضَرَّعُونَ ۝٤٢

We sent Our Messengers unto people before your time [Prophet] and afflicted their people with misfortune and hardship so that they might humble themselves.

walaqad arsalnā ilā umamin min qablika fa-akhadhnāhum bil-basāi wal-ḍarāi laʿallahum yataḍarraʿūn

فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِذۡ جَاۤءَهُم بَأۡسُنَا تَضَرَّعُوا۟ وَلَـٰكِن قَسَتۡ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَزَیَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٤٣

When the misfortune fell on them, they did not humble themselves, but instead their hearts became hardened, and Satan made their bad deeds alluring to them.

falawlā idh jāahum basunā taḍarraʿū walākin qasat qulūbuhum wazayyana lahumu l-shayṭānu mā kānū yaʿmalūn

فَلَمَّا نَسُوا۟ مَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَتَحۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَبۡوَ ٰبَ كُلِّ شَیۡءٍ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا فَرِحُوا۟ بِمَاۤ أُوتُوۤا۟ أَخَذۡنَـٰهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ فَإِذَا هُم مُّبۡلِسُونَ ۝٤٤

When they had forgotten all that they have been told to take to heart, we opened the gates to everything they wanted. Then, as they rejoiced in what had been granted, We struck them suddenly and they were in despair.

falammā nasū mā dhukkirū bihi fataḥnā ʿalayhim abwāba kulli shayin ḥattā idhā fariḥū bimā ūtū akhadhnāhum baghtatan fa-idhā hum mub'lisūn

فَقُطِعَ دَابِرُ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ۚ وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٥

The evildoers were wiped out. All praise is due to God, the Lord of the Worlds!

faquṭiʿa dābiru l-qawmi alladhīna ẓalamū wal-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn

قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِنۡ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ سَمۡعَكُمۡ وَأَبۡصَـٰرَكُمۡ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُم مَّنۡ إِلَـٰهٌ غَیۡرُ ٱللَّهِ یَأۡتِیكُم بِهِۗ ٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ ثُمَّ هُمۡ یَصۡدِفُونَ ۝٤٦

Say, "Considered this-what if God should take away your hearing and your sight and seal your hearts? What god other than God is there that could bring it all back to you?" See how We explain Our revelations in many ways, and yet still they turn away in disdain.

qul ara-aytum in akhadha l-lahu samʿakum wa-abṣārakum wakhatama ʿalā qulūbikum man ilāhun ghayru l-lahi yatīkum bihi unẓur kayfa nuṣarrifu l-āyāti thumma hum yaṣdifūn

قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتَكُمۡ إِنۡ أَتَىٰكُمۡ عَذَابُ ٱللَّهِ بَغۡتَةً أَوۡ جَهۡرَةً هَلۡ یُهۡلَكُ إِلَّا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٤٧

Say, "Consider this, what if the punishment of God should come to you suddenly or gradually? Would anyone but the evildoers be destroyed?"

qul ara-aytakum in atākum ʿadhābu l-lahi baghtatan aw jahratan hal yuh'laku illā l-qawmu l-ẓālimūn

وَمَا نُرۡسِلُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرِینَ وَمُنذِرِینَۖ فَمَنۡ ءَامَنَ وَأَصۡلَحَ فَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٤٨

We send Our Messengers only to give good news and to warn. All who believe and live righteously do not need to fear, nor will they grieve.

wamā nur'silu l-mur'salīna illā mubashirīna wamundhirīna faman āmana wa-aṣlaḥa falā khawfun ʿalayhim walā hum yaḥzanūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا یَمَسُّهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡسُقُونَ ۝٤٩

As for those who rejected Our messages, suffering will afflict them as a result of all their sinful actions.

wa-alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā yamassuhumu l-ʿadhābu bimā kānū yafsuqūn

قُل لَّاۤ أَقُولُ لَكُمۡ عِندِی خَزَاۤىِٕنُ ٱللَّهِ وَلَاۤ أَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبَ وَلَاۤ أَقُولُ لَكُمۡ إِنِّی مَلَكٌۖ إِنۡ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیَّۚ قُلۡ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوِی ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ وَٱلۡبَصِیرُۚ أَفَلَا تَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٥٠

[Prophet] Say, "I do not say to you, 'God's treasures are with me,' nor [do I say], 'I know the things that are beyond human perception,' nor do I say to you, ' Behold, I am an angel'; I only follow what is revealed to me. Say, "Can the blind and seeing be considered equal? Why will you not think?"

qul lā aqūlu lakum ʿindī khazāinu l-lahi walā aʿlamu l-ghayba walā aqūlu lakum innī malakun in attabiʿu illā mā yūḥā ilayya qul hal yastawī l-aʿmā wal-baṣīru afalā tatafakkarūn

6 Reward of Believers

وَأَنذِرۡ بِهِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَخَافُونَ أَن یُحۡشَرُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ لَیۡسَ لَهُم مِّن دُونِهِۦ وَلِیࣱّ وَلَا شَفِیعࣱ لَّعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَّقُونَ ۝٥١

Use the Qur'an to warn those who fear being gathered before their Lord with no one to protect them from Him or to intercede with Him, so that they might become [fully] aware of Him.

wa-andhir bihi alladhīna yakhāfūna an yuḥ'sharū ilā rabbihim laysa lahum min dūnihi waliyyun walā shafīʿun laʿallahum yattaqūn

وَلَا تَطۡرُدِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِٱلۡغَدَوٰةِ وَٱلۡعَشِیِّ یُرِیدُونَ وَجۡهَهُۥۖ مَا عَلَیۡكَ مِنۡ حِسَابِهِم مِّن شَیۡءࣲ وَمَا مِنۡ حِسَابِكَ عَلَیۡهِم مِّن شَیۡءࣲ فَتَطۡرُدَهُمۡ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٥٢

Don't drive away [any of] those who call upon their Lord morning or evening, seeking His face. You are in no way accountable for them, just as they are in no way accountable for you. You have no right to drive them away, for then you would be among the unjust.

walā taṭrudi alladhīna yadʿūna rabbahum bil-ghadati wal-ʿashiyi yurīdūna wajhahu mā ʿalayka min ḥisābihim min shayin wamā min ḥisābika ʿalayhim min shayin fataṭrudahum fatakūna mina l-ẓālimīn

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ فَتَنَّا بَعۡضَهُم بِبَعۡضࣲ لِّیَقُولُوۤا۟ أَهَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ مَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنۢ بَیۡنِنَاۤۗ أَلَیۡسَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَعۡلَمَ بِٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝٥٣

We have made some of them a test for others, to make the unbelievers say, "Is it these men that God has favored among us?" Does God not know best who is grateful [to Him]?

wakadhālika fatannā baʿḍahum bibaʿḍin liyaqūlū ahāulāi manna l-lahu ʿalayhim min bayninā alaysa l-lahu bi-aʿlama bil-shākirīn

وَإِذَا جَاۤءَكَ ٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا فَقُلۡ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَیۡكُمۡۖ كَتَبَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَةَ أَنَّهُۥ مَنۡ عَمِلَ مِنكُمۡ سُوۤءَۢا بِجَهَـٰلَةࣲ ثُمَّ تَابَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ وَأَصۡلَحَ فَأَنَّهُۥ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٥٤

When those who believe in Our messages come to you, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has willed upon Himself to be Merciful-to-all. If any of you sins out of ignorance and then repents and lives righteously, God is most forgiving, a purveyor of mercy."

wa-idhā jāaka alladhīna yu'minūna biāyātinā faqul salāmun ʿalaykum kataba rabbukum ʿalā nafsihi l-raḥmata annahu man ʿamila minkum sūan bijahālatin thumma tāba min baʿdihi wa-aṣlaḥa fa-annahu ghafūrun raḥīmu

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ وَلِتَسۡتَبِینَ سَبِیلُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٥٥

We clearly spell out Our messages and [We do it] so that the path of those who force others to reject God's messages may be made clear.

wakadhālika nufaṣṣilu l-āyāti walitastabīna sabīlu l-muj'rimīn

7 Divine Judgment

قُلۡ إِنِّی نُهِیتُ أَنۡ أَعۡبُدَ ٱلَّذِینَ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۚ قُل لَّاۤ أَتَّبِعُ أَهۡوَاۤءَكُمۡ قَدۡ ضَلَلۡتُ إِذࣰا وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلۡمُهۡتَدِینَ ۝٥٦

Say, "I am forbidden to worship those you call on instead of God." Say, "I do not follow your vain desires, for if I did, I would stray from among those who have found the right path."

qul innī nuhītu an aʿbuda alladhīna tadʿūna min dūni l-lahi qul lā attabiʿu ahwāakum qad ḍalaltu idhan wamā anā mina l-muh'tadīn

قُلۡ إِنِّی عَلَىٰ بَیِّنَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّی وَكَذَّبۡتُم بِهِۦۚ مَا عِندِی مَا تَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ بِهِۦۤۚ إِنِ ٱلۡحُكۡمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِۖ یَقُصُّ ٱلۡحَقَّۖ وَهُوَ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡفَـٰصِلِینَ ۝٥٧

Say, "Behold, I take my stand based on clear evidence from my Lord, but still you deny it. I don't have in my power what you want me to hasten: judgment rests with none but God. He will declare the Truth, since it is He who is the best judge between Truth and falsehood."

qul innī ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbī wakadhabtum bihi mā ʿindī mā tastaʿjilūna bihi ini l-ḥuk'mu illā lillahi yaquṣṣu l-ḥaqa wahuwa khayru l-fāṣilīn

قُل لَّوۡ أَنَّ عِندِی مَا تَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ بِهِۦ لَقُضِیَ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكُمۡۗ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٥٨

Say, "If what you seek to rush were in my power, everything would have been decided between you and me, but God knows best who does wrong."

qul law anna ʿindī mā tastaʿjilūna bihi laquḍiya l-amru baynī wabaynakum wal-lahu aʿlamu bil-ẓālimīn

۞ وَعِندَهُۥ مَفَاتِحُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ لَا یَعۡلَمُهَاۤ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَیَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِۚ وَمَا تَسۡقُطُ مِن وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا یَعۡلَمُهَا وَلَا حَبَّةࣲ فِی ظُلُمَـٰتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا رَطۡبࣲ وَلَا یَابِسٍ إِلَّا فِی كِتَـٰبࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٥٩

He holds the keys to the unknown. No one knows those keys but Him. He knows all that is on land and in the sea, and not a leaf falls without Him knowing about it. There is not a grain in the earth's deep darkness, or anything living or dead that is not written in a clear record.

waʿindahu mafātiḥu l-ghaybi lā yaʿlamuhā illā huwa wayaʿlamu mā fī l-bari wal-baḥri wamā tasquṭu min waraqatin illā yaʿlamuhā walā ḥabbatin fī ẓulumāti l-arḍi walā raṭbin walā yābisin illā fī kitābin mubīni

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی یَتَوَفَّىٰكُم بِٱلَّیۡلِ وَیَعۡلَمُ مَا جَرَحۡتُم بِٱلنَّهَارِ ثُمَّ یَبۡعَثُكُمۡ فِیهِ لِیُقۡضَىٰۤ أَجَلࣱ مُّسَمࣰّىۖ ثُمَّ إِلَیۡهِ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ ثُمَّ یُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٦٠

It is He who calls your souls back by night and knows what you have done by day and He brings you back to life each day until your fixed term is fulfilled. In the end, you must return to Him, and then He will make you understand all that you were doing [in life].

wahuwa alladhī yatawaffākum bi-al-layli wayaʿlamu mā jaraḥtum bil-nahāri thumma yabʿathukum fīhi liyuq'ḍā ajalun musamman thumma ilayhi marjiʿukum thumma yunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

8 Divine Judgment

وَهُوَ ٱلۡقَاهِرُ فَوۡقَ عِبَادِهِۦۖ وَیُرۡسِلُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ حَفَظَةً حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ تَوَفَّتۡهُ رُسُلُنَا وَهُمۡ لَا یُفَرِّطُونَ ۝٦١

He is the Supreme Master over His worshipers. He sends out heavenly forces to watch over you until, when death approaches any of you, those sent by Us take his soul. They don't overlook [anyone].

wahuwa l-qāhiru fawqa ʿibādihi wayur'silu ʿalaykum ḥafaẓatan ḥattā idhā jāa aḥadakumu l-mawtu tawaffathu rusulunā wahum lā yufarriṭūn

ثُمَّ رُدُّوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَوۡلَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡحَقِّۚ أَلَا لَهُ ٱلۡحُكۡمُ وَهُوَ أَسۡرَعُ ٱلۡحَـٰسِبِینَ ۝٦٢

Then they will be brought before God, their true Lord. Judgment is truly His alone. He is the swiftest in taking accounts.

thumma ruddū ilā l-lahi mawlāhumu l-ḥaqi alā lahu l-ḥuk'mu wahuwa asraʿu l-ḥāsibīn

قُلۡ مَن یُنَجِّیكُم مِّن ظُلُمَـٰتِ ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ تَدۡعُونَهُۥ تَضَرُّعࣰا وَخُفۡیَةࣰ لَّىِٕنۡ أَنجَىٰنَا مِنۡ هَـٰذِهِۦ لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝٦٣

Say, "Who saves you from the dark dangers of the land and the sea when you humbly and secretly call upon Him, and say, 'If He will save us from this [distress], we will be among the grateful'?"

qul man yunajjīkum min ẓulumāti l-bari wal-baḥri tadʿūnahu taḍarruʿan wakhuf'yatan la-in anjānā min hādhihi lanakūnanna mina l-shākirīn

قُلِ ٱللَّهُ یُنَجِّیكُم مِّنۡهَا وَمِن كُلِّ كَرۡبࣲ ثُمَّ أَنتُمۡ تُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٦٤

Say, "God [alone] can save you from this and from every distress and still you attribute divinity to others besides Him."

quli l-lahu yunajjīkum min'hā wamin kulli karbin thumma antum tush'rikūn

قُلۡ هُوَ ٱلۡقَادِرُ عَلَىٰۤ أَن یَبۡعَثَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابࣰا مِّن فَوۡقِكُمۡ أَوۡ مِن تَحۡتِ أَرۡجُلِكُمۡ أَوۡ یَلۡبِسَكُمۡ شِیَعࣰا وَیُذِیقَ بَعۡضَكُم بَأۡسَ بَعۡضٍۗ ٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٦٥

Say, "It is He alone who has the power to afflict you with suffering from above or from beneath your feet, or to divide you into divisive factions and let you taste the fear of one another." See how We explain these messages so that they might understand;

qul huwa l-qādiru ʿalā an yabʿatha ʿalaykum ʿadhāban min fawqikum aw min taḥti arjulikum aw yalbisakum shiyaʿan wayudhīqa baʿḍakum basa baʿḍin unẓur kayfa nuṣarrifu l-āyāti laʿallahum yafqahūn

وَكَذَّبَ بِهِۦ قَوۡمُكَ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّۚ قُل لَّسۡتُ عَلَیۡكُم بِوَكِیلࣲ ۝٦٦

yet your people still reject it even though it is the Truth. Say, "I am not your keeper.

wakadhaba bihi qawmuka wahuwa l-ḥaqu qul lastu ʿalaykum biwakīli

لِّكُلِّ نَبَإࣲ مُّسۡتَقَرࣱّۚ وَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٧

Every news [from God] has a fixed time to be fulfilled, and in time you will come to realize [the truth]."

likulli naba-in mus'taqarrun wasawfa taʿlamūn

وَإِذَا رَأَیۡتَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَخُوضُونَ فِیۤ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ یَخُوضُوا۟ فِی حَدِیثٍ غَیۡرِهِۦۚ وَإِمَّا یُنسِیَنَّكَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ فَلَا تَقۡعُدۡ بَعۡدَ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ مَعَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٦٨

Whenever you encounter those who speak with disrespect about Our revelations, turn away from them until they move on to another topic, and if Satan should ever cause you to forget, then, do not remain with those unjust people after realizing what they are doing.

wa-idhā ra-ayta alladhīna yakhūḍūna fī āyātinā fa-aʿriḍ ʿanhum ḥattā yakhūḍū fī ḥadīthin ghayrihi wa-immā yunsiyannaka l-shayṭānu falā taqʿud baʿda l-dhik'rā maʿa l-qawmi l-ẓālimīn

وَمَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَ مِنۡ حِسَابِهِم مِّن شَیۡءࣲ وَلَـٰكِن ذِكۡرَىٰ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَّقُونَ ۝٦٩

Those who are mindful of God are not accountable for the wrongdoers. However, this is a reminder to them so that they may become mindful of God.

wamā ʿalā alladhīna yattaqūna min ḥisābihim min shayin walākin dhik'rā laʿallahum yattaqūn

وَذَرِ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ دِینَهُمۡ لَعِبࣰا وَلَهۡوࣰا وَغَرَّتۡهُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَذَكِّرۡ بِهِۦۤ أَن تُبۡسَلَ نَفۡسُۢ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ لَیۡسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِیࣱّ وَلَا شَفِیعࣱ وَإِن تَعۡدِلۡ كُلَّ عَدۡلࣲ لَّا یُؤۡخَذۡ مِنۡهَاۤۗ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُبۡسِلُوا۟ بِمَا كَسَبُوا۟ۖ لَهُمۡ شَرَابࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ وَعَذَابٌ أَلِیمُۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٧٠

Leave behind those who turn their religion into amusement and a diversion and are mesmerized by the life of this world. Remind them with it, lest a soul be damned for what it has earned. It will have no one to protect it from God, and no one to intercede besides Him. Whatever ransom he may offer will not be accepted. Such people will be held accountable for their actions. For them will be a drink of boiling water, and painful punishment awaits them because of their persistence in denying the truth.

wadhari alladhīna ittakhadhū dīnahum laʿiban walahwan wagharrathumu l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā wadhakkir bihi an tub'sala nafsun bimā kasabat laysa lahā min dūni l-lahi waliyyun walā shafīʿun wa-in taʿdil kulla ʿadlin lā yu'khadh min'hā ulāika alladhīna ub'silū bimā kasabū lahum sharābun min ḥamīmin waʿadhābun alīmun bimā kānū yakfurūn

9 Abraham's Argument for Divine Unity

قُلۡ أَنَدۡعُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَنفَعُنَا وَلَا یَضُرُّنَا وَنُرَدُّ عَلَىٰۤ أَعۡقَابِنَا بَعۡدَ إِذۡ هَدَىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ كَٱلَّذِی ٱسۡتَهۡوَتۡهُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ حَیۡرَانَ لَهُۥۤ أَصۡحَـٰبࣱ یَدۡعُونَهُۥۤ إِلَى ٱلۡهُدَى ٱئۡتِنَاۗ قُلۡ إِنَّ هُدَى ٱللَّهِ هُوَ ٱلۡهُدَىٰۖ وَأُمِرۡنَا لِنُسۡلِمَ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧١

Say, "Instead of God, will we call on something that can neither benefit nor harm us, and turn back after God has guided us. [This would be] like someone seduced, having been tempted by Satan's earthly lusts, though his companions are calling him to guidance [saying], 'Come to us!'" Say, "God's guidance is the only guidance, and we are commanded to surrender ourselves to the Lord of the Worlds,

qul anadʿū min dūni l-lahi mā lā yanfaʿunā walā yaḍurrunā wanuraddu ʿalā aʿqābinā baʿda idh hadānā l-lahu ka-alladhī is'tahwathu l-shayāṭīnu fī l-arḍi ḥayrāna lahu aṣḥābun yadʿūnahu ilā l-hudā i'tinā qul inna hudā l-lahi huwa l-hudā wa-umir'nā linus'lima lirabbi l-ʿālamīn

وَأَنۡ أَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَٱتَّقُوهُۚ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ إِلَیۡهِ تُحۡشَرُونَ ۝٧٢

and to keep up prayers and be mindful of Him. It is to Him that you all will be gathered.

wa-an aqīmū l-ṣalata wa-ittaqūhu wahuwa alladhī ilayhi tuḥ'sharūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ وَیَوۡمَ یَقُولُ كُن فَیَكُونُۚ قَوۡلُهُ ٱلۡحَقُّۚ وَلَهُ ٱلۡمُلۡكُ یَوۡمَ یُنفَخُ فِی ٱلصُّورِۚ عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ٱلۡخَبِیرُ ۝٧٣

It is He Who has created the heavens and the earth in Truth, and whenever He says, "Be!" it will be. His word is the Truth. All control on the Day the Trumpet is blown belongs to Him. He knows all that is beyond human's perception, as well as all that can be witnessed by human senses, for He alone is The-Wise, All-Aware.

wahuwa alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi wayawma yaqūlu kun fayakūnu qawluhu l-ḥaqu walahu l-mul'ku yawma yunfakhu fī l-ṣūri ʿālimu l-ghaybi wal-shahādati wahuwa l-ḥakīmu l-khabīr

۞ وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ لِأَبِیهِ ءَازَرَ أَتَتَّخِذُ أَصۡنَامًا ءَالِهَةً إِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰكَ وَقَوۡمَكَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٧٤

Remember when Abraham spoke to his father Azar, and said, "How can you take idols as gods? I see that you and your people are clearly lost.

wa-idh qāla ib'rāhīmu li-abīhi āzara atattakhidhu aṣnāman ālihatan innī arāka waqawmaka fī ḍalālin mubīni

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نُرِیۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ مَلَكُوتَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلِیَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُوقِنِینَ ۝٧٥

In this way We made Abraham to understand God's mighty dominion over the heavens and the earth, so that he might become a firm believer.

wakadhālika nurī ib'rāhīma malakūta l-samāwāti wal-arḍi waliyakūna mina l-mūqinīn

فَلَمَّا جَنَّ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلَّیۡلُ رَءَا كَوۡكَبࣰاۖ قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَبِّیۖ فَلَمَّاۤ أَفَلَ قَالَ لَاۤ أُحِبُّ ٱلۡءَافِلِینَ ۝٧٦

When the night overshadowed him, he saw a star and said, "This is my Lord!" But when it went down he said, "I do not like things that disappear."

falammā janna ʿalayhi al-laylu raā kawkaban qāla hādhā rabbī falammā afala qāla lā uḥibbu l-āfilīn

فَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلۡقَمَرَ بَازِغࣰا قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَبِّیۖ فَلَمَّاۤ أَفَلَ قَالَ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ یَهۡدِنِی رَبِّی لَأَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٧٧

Then, when he saw the moon rising he said, "This is my Lord" but when it set, he said, "If my Lord does not guide me, I will definitely become one of those lost people."

falammā raā l-qamara bāzighan qāla hādhā rabbī falammā afala qāla la-in lam yahdinī rabbī la-akūnanna mina l-qawmi l-ḍālīn

فَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلشَّمۡسَ بَازِغَةࣰ قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَبِّی هَـٰذَاۤ أَكۡبَرُۖ فَلَمَّاۤ أَفَلَتۡ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٧٨

Then, when he saw the sun rising he said, "This is my Lord! This is greater!" But when it [too] set, he said, "My people, I disown all that you worship other than God.

falammā raā l-shamsa bāzighatan qāla hādhā rabbī hādhā akbaru falammā afalat qāla yāqawmi innī barīon mimmā tush'rikūn

إِنِّی وَجَّهۡتُ وَجۡهِیَ لِلَّذِی فَطَرَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ حَنِیفࣰاۖ وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٧٩

I have turned my face to Him who brought into existence the heavens and the earth, and I have turned away from all that is false. I am not one of the idolaters."

innī wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhī faṭara l-samāwāti wal-arḍa ḥanīfan wamā anā mina l-mush'rikīn

وَحَاۤجَّهُۥ قَوۡمُهُۥۚ قَالَ أَتُحَـٰۤجُّوۤنِّی فِی ٱللَّهِ وَقَدۡ هَدَىٰنِۚ وَلَاۤ أَخَافُ مَا تُشۡرِكُونَ بِهِۦۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ رَبِّی شَیۡءࣰاۚ وَسِعَ رَبِّی كُلَّ شَیۡءٍ عِلۡمًاۚ أَفَلَا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٨٠

His people argued with him, and he said, "How can you argue with me about God when it is He who has guided me? I do not fear anything you associate with Him [for no evil can affect me] unless my Lord so wills. My Lord embraces everything within His knowledge. How can you not notice?

waḥājjahu qawmuhu qāla atuḥājjūnnī fī l-lahi waqad hadāni walā akhāfu mā tush'rikūna bihi illā an yashāa rabbī shayan wasiʿa rabbī kulla shayin ʿil'man afalā tatadhakkarūn

وَكَیۡفَ أَخَافُ مَاۤ أَشۡرَكۡتُمۡ وَلَا تَخَافُونَ أَنَّكُمۡ أَشۡرَكۡتُم بِٱللَّهِ مَا لَمۡ یُنَزِّلۡ بِهِۦ عَلَیۡكُمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣰاۚ فَأَیُّ ٱلۡفَرِیقَیۡنِ أَحَقُّ بِٱلۡأَمۡنِۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨١

Why should I fear anything that you worship besides Him? Why are you not afraid to associate partners with Him when He never sent you authority to do so? Tell me, if you know the answer, which side is more entitled to feel secure?

wakayfa akhāfu mā ashraktum walā takhāfūna annakum ashraktum bil-lahi mā lam yunazzil bihi ʿalaykum sul'ṭānan fa-ayyu l-farīqayni aḥaqqu bil-amni in kuntum taʿlamūn

ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَمۡ یَلۡبِسُوۤا۟ إِیمَـٰنَهُم بِظُلۡمٍ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡأَمۡنُ وَهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ۝٨٢

It is those who have faith, and who have not mixed their faith with idolatry. It is they who will be secure, since it is they who have found the right path!"

alladhīna āmanū walam yalbisū īmānahum biẓul'min ulāika lahumu l-amnu wahum muh'tadūn

10 Prophets among Abraham's Line

وَتِلۡكَ حُجَّتُنَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهَاۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ عَلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦۚ نَرۡفَعُ دَرَجَـٰتࣲ مَّن نَّشَاۤءُۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِیمٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٨٣

Such was the argument We gave to Abraham against his people. We raise in rank whoever We will. Your Lord is All-Wise, All-knowing.

watil'ka ḥujjatunā ātaynāhā ib'rāhīma ʿalā qawmihi narfaʿu darajātin man nashāu inna rabbaka ḥakīmun ʿalīmu

وَوَهَبۡنَا لَهُۥۤ إِسۡحَـٰقَ وَیَعۡقُوبَۚ كُلًّا هَدَیۡنَاۚ وَنُوحًا هَدَیۡنَا مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَمِن ذُرِّیَّتِهِۦ دَاوُۥدَ وَسُلَیۡمَـٰنَ وَأَیُّوبَ وَیُوسُفَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَۚ وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٨٤

We gave him Isaac and Jacob. We guided each just as We had guided Noah before. Among his descendants were David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron. In this way We reward those who do good;

wawahabnā lahu is'ḥāqa wayaʿqūba kullan hadaynā wanūḥan hadaynā min qablu wamin dhurriyyatihi dāwūda wasulaymāna wa-ayyūba wayūsufa wamūsā wahārūna wakadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

وَزَكَرِیَّا وَیَحۡیَىٰ وَعِیسَىٰ وَإِلۡیَاسَۖ كُلࣱّ مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٥

Zachariah, John, Jesus and Elijah-- every one of them was righteous.

wazakariyyā wayaḥyā waʿīsā wa-il'yāsa kullun mina l-ṣāliḥīn

وَإِسۡمَـٰعِیلَ وَٱلۡیَسَعَ وَیُونُسَ وَلُوطࣰاۚ وَكُلࣰّا فَضَّلۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٦

Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah, and Lot--We favored every one of them above other people,

wa-is'māʿīla wal-yasaʿa wayūnusa walūṭan wakullan faḍḍalnā ʿalā l-ʿālamīn

وَمِنۡ ءَابَاۤىِٕهِمۡ وَذُرِّیَّـٰتِهِمۡ وَإِخۡوَ ٰنِهِمۡۖ وَٱجۡتَبَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٨٧

and also some of their forefathers, their offspring and their brothers. We chose them and guided them on a straight path.

wamin ābāihim wadhurriyyātihim wa-ikh'wānihim wa-ij'tabaynāhum wahadaynāhum ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

ذَ ٰلِكَ هُدَى ٱللَّهِ یَهۡدِی بِهِۦ مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۚ وَلَوۡ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ لَحَبِطَ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٨٨

Such is God's guidance. He guides whomever He wills of his worshipers. Had they ascribed divinity to others besides Him, all their good works would have been in vain.

dhālika hudā l-lahi yahdī bihi man yashāu min ʿibādihi walaw ashrakū laḥabiṭa ʿanhum mā kānū yaʿmalūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحُكۡمَ وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَۚ فَإِن یَكۡفُرۡ بِهَا هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ فَقَدۡ وَكَّلۡنَا بِهَا قَوۡمࣰا لَّیۡسُوا۟ بِهَا بِكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٨٩

Those are the ones to whom We gave the Book, wisdom and prophethood. Even if these people now chose to deny the truth, We will entrust it to others who will never deny the truth.

ulāika alladhīna ātaynāhumu l-kitāba wal-ḥuk'ma wal-nubuwata fa-in yakfur bihā hāulāi faqad wakkalnā bihā qawman laysū bihā bikāfirīn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ هَدَى ٱللَّهُۖ فَبِهُدَىٰهُمُ ٱقۡتَدِهۡۗ قُل لَّاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ أَجۡرًاۖ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٠

These were the people God guided. Follow their guidance and say, "I ask no reward for it from you. It is a reminder to all people."

ulāika alladhīna hadā l-lahu fabihudāhumu iq'tadih qul lā asalukum ʿalayhi ajran in huwa illā dhik'rā lil'ʿālamīn

11 Truth of Revelation

وَمَا قَدَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدۡرِهِۦۤ إِذۡ قَالُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ بَشَرࣲ مِّن شَیۡءࣲۗ قُلۡ مَنۡ أَنزَلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ ٱلَّذِی جَاۤءَ بِهِۦ مُوسَىٰ نُورࣰا وَهُدࣰى لِّلنَّاسِۖ تَجۡعَلُونَهُۥ قَرَاطِیسَ تُبۡدُونَهَا وَتُخۡفُونَ كَثِیرࣰاۖ وَعُلِّمۡتُم مَّا لَمۡ تَعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنتُمۡ وَلَاۤ ءَابَاۤؤُكُمۡۖ قُلِ ٱللَّهُۖ ثُمَّ ذَرۡهُمۡ فِی خَوۡضِهِمۡ یَلۡعَبُونَ ۝٩١

They had not truly appreciated God when they said; God has never revealed anything to a mortal." Say, "Who was it then that sent down the Book which Moses brought as a enlightenment and guidance to men--Yet, you treat it as [mere] leaves of paper, showing some but hiding many. You were taught things that neither you nor your forefathers had ever known. Say, "God!" [has revealed the Book] Then leave them engrossed in their vain talk.

wamā qadarū l-laha ḥaqqa qadrihi idh qālū mā anzala l-lahu ʿalā basharin min shayin qul man anzala l-kitāba alladhī jāa bihi mūsā nūran wahudan lilnnāsi tajʿalūnahu qarāṭīsa tub'dūnahā watukh'fūna kathīran waʿullim'tum mā lam taʿlamū antum walā ābāukum quli l-lahu thumma dharhum fī khawḍihim yalʿabūn

وَهَـٰذَا كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ مُبَارَكࣱ مُّصَدِّقُ ٱلَّذِی بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡهِ وَلِتُنذِرَ أُمَّ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ وَمَنۡ حَوۡلَهَاۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦۖ وَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ یُحَافِظُونَ ۝٩٢

This is a blessed Book that We sent down to confirm what is available (of earlier revelations] in order that you may warn the foremost of cities and its surroundings. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe it [this Book] and keep their prayers.

wahādhā kitābun anzalnāhu mubārakun muṣaddiqu alladhī bayna yadayhi walitundhira umma l-qurā waman ḥawlahā wa-alladhīna yu'minūna bil-ākhirati yu'minūna bihi wahum ʿalā ṣalātihim yuḥāfiẓūn

وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوۡ قَالَ أُوحِیَ إِلَیَّ وَلَمۡ یُوحَ إِلَیۡهِ شَیۡءࣱ وَمَن قَالَ سَأُنزِلُ مِثۡلَ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُۗ وَلَوۡ تَرَىٰۤ إِذِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ فِی غَمَرَ ٰتِ ٱلۡمَوۡتِ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ بَاسِطُوۤا۟ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ أَخۡرِجُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَكُمُۖ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ تُجۡزَوۡنَ عَذَابَ ٱلۡهُونِ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ غَیۡرَ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَكُنتُمۡ عَنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ تَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٩٣

Who could be more wicked than someone who invents lies about God or says, "This has been revealed to me," when no revelations have been sent to him, or says, "I can also reveal something equal to God's revelation?" If you could only see [how it will be] when these evildoers find themselves in the agonies of death, and the angels stretch out their hands to them [and call], "Give up your souls. Today you will be repaid with humiliating suffering for attributing something to God that is not true and for arrogantly resisting His Message."

waman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban aw qāla ūḥiya ilayya walam yūḥa ilayhi shayon waman qāla sa-unzilu mith'la mā anzala l-lahu walaw tarā idhi l-ẓālimūna fī ghamarāti l-mawti wal-malāikatu bāsiṭū aydīhim akhrijū anfusakumu l-yawma tuj'zawna ʿadhāba l-hūni bimā kuntum taqūlūna ʿalā l-lahi ghayra l-ḥaqi wakuntum ʿan āyātihi tastakbirūn

وَلَقَدۡ جِئۡتُمُونَا فُرَ ٰدَىٰ كَمَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةࣲ وَتَرَكۡتُم مَّا خَوَّلۡنَـٰكُمۡ وَرَاۤءَ ظُهُورِكُمۡۖ وَمَا نَرَىٰ مَعَكُمۡ شُفَعَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ زَعَمۡتُمۡ أَنَّهُمۡ فِیكُمۡ شُرَكَـٰۤؤُا۟ۚ لَقَد تَّقَطَّعَ بَیۡنَكُمۡ وَضَلَّ عَنكُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَزۡعُمُونَ ۝٩٤

God will say, "Now you returned to Us alone, just as We first created you, and you have left behind all that We gave you [in your lifetime]. We don't see those intercessors of yours that you claimed were partners with God. All the bonds between you [and your earthly life] are now severed, and all those you formerly fancied have deserted you."

walaqad ji'tumūnā furādā kamā khalaqnākum awwala marratin wataraktum mā khawwalnākum warāa ẓuhūrikum wamā narā maʿakum shufaʿāakumu alladhīna zaʿamtum annahum fīkum shurakāu laqad taqaṭṭaʿa baynakum waḍalla ʿankum mā kuntum tazʿumūn

12 Ultimate Triumph of Truth

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ فَالِقُ ٱلۡحَبِّ وَٱلنَّوَىٰۖ یُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡحَیَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَیِّتِ وَمُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡمَیِّتِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَیِّۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٩٥

God is the One who splits the grain, and the seeds open. He brings out the living from the dead and the dead from the living. This is God, so how can you turn away from the truth?

inna l-laha fāliqu l-ḥabi wal-nawā yukh'riju l-ḥaya mina l-mayiti wamukh'riju l-mayiti mina l-ḥayi dhālikumu l-lahu fa-annā tu'fakūn

فَالِقُ ٱلۡإِصۡبَاحِ وَجَعَلَ ٱلَّیۡلَ سَكَنࣰا وَٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ حُسۡبَانࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ تَقۡدِیرُ ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡعَلِیمِ ۝٩٦

He causes dawns to break, and He makes the night for rest, and He made the sun and the moon run precise courses. That is the design of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.

fāliqu l-iṣ'bāḥi wajaʿala al-layla sakanan wal-shamsa wal-qamara ḥus'bānan dhālika taqdīru l-ʿazīzi l-ʿalīm

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلنُّجُومَ لِتَهۡتَدُوا۟ بِهَا فِی ظُلُمَـٰتِ ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِۗ قَدۡ فَصَّلۡنَا ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٩٧

It is He who set up the stars for you so that you might be guided by them in the midst of the deep darkness of the land and the sea. We have spelled out these messages for those who have knowledge.

wahuwa alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-nujūma litahtadū bihā fī ẓulumāti l-bari wal-baḥri qad faṣṣalnā l-āyāti liqawmin yaʿlamūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنشَأَكُم مِّن نَّفۡسࣲ وَ ٰحِدَةࣲ فَمُسۡتَقَرࣱّ وَمُسۡتَوۡدَعࣱۗ قَدۡ فَصَّلۡنَا ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝٩٨

It is He who brought you [all] into existence from a single soul and [has appoint each of you] a time-limit [on earth] and a resting place [after death]. We have made Our revelations clear to those who comprehend.

wahuwa alladhī ansha-akum min nafsin wāḥidatin famus'taqarrun wamus'tawdaʿun qad faṣṣalnā l-āyāti liqawmin yafqahūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا بِهِۦ نَبَاتَ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا مِنۡهُ خَضِرࣰا نُّخۡرِجُ مِنۡهُ حَبࣰّا مُّتَرَاكِبࣰا وَمِنَ ٱلنَّخۡلِ مِن طَلۡعِهَا قِنۡوَانࣱ دَانِیَةࣱ وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ مِّنۡ أَعۡنَابࣲ وَٱلزَّیۡتُونَ وَٱلرُّمَّانَ مُشۡتَبِهࣰا وَغَیۡرَ مُتَشَـٰبِهٍۗ ٱنظُرُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ ثَمَرِهِۦۤ إِذَاۤ أَثۡمَرَ وَیَنۡعِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٩٩

It is He who sends down water from the sky. With it, We sustain all living growth, then bring greenery from it, and from that We bring out grains, one riding on the other in close-packed rows.From the palm tree comes dates in thick clusters, and there are gardens of vines and olive trees, and pomegranates, all so alike and yet so different. Watch their fruit while it ripens. In all this there are signs for the people who would believe.

wahuwa alladhī anzala mina l-samāi māan fa-akhrajnā bihi nabāta kulli shayin fa-akhrajnā min'hu khaḍiran nukh'riju min'hu ḥabban mutarākiban wamina l-nakhli min ṭalʿihā qin'wānun dāniyatun wajannātin min aʿnābin wal-zaytūna wal-rumāna mush'tabihan waghayra mutashābihin unẓurū ilā thamarihi idhā athmara wayanʿihi inna fī dhālikum laāyātin liqawmin yu'minūn

وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ شُرَكَاۤءَ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَخَلَقَهُمۡۖ وَخَرَقُوا۟ لَهُۥ بَنِینَ وَبَنَـٰتِۭ بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٠٠

Some [people] have come to think of jinn as partners with God, although it is He who has created them, and in their ignorance they attribute sons and daughters to Him. May he be exalted in His glory and far higher than anything that men may ascribe to Him,

wajaʿalū lillahi shurakāa l-jina wakhalaqahum wakharaqū lahu banīna wabanātin bighayri ʿil'min sub'ḥānahu wataʿālā ʿammā yaṣifūn

13 Gradual Progress

بَدِیعُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ أَنَّىٰ یَكُونُ لَهُۥ وَلَدࣱ وَلَمۡ تَكُن لَّهُۥ صَـٰحِبَةࣱۖ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَیۡءࣲۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمࣱ ۝١٠١

the Originator of the heavens and earth. How could He have had a child without ever having a mate, since It is He who created everything, and He alone knows everything?

badīʿu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi annā yakūnu lahu waladun walam takun lahu ṣāḥibatun wakhalaqa kulla shayin wahuwa bikulli shayin ʿalīmu

ذَ ٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡۖ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ خَـٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَكِیلࣱ ۝١٠٢

This is God, your Lord, and there is no God but Him, the Creator of everything. Worship Him alone. He is in charge of everything.

dhālikumu l-lahu rabbukum lā ilāha illā huwa khāliqu kulli shayin fa-uʿ'budūhu wahuwa ʿalā kulli shayin wakīlu

لَّا تُدۡرِكُهُ ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرُ وَهُوَ یُدۡرِكُ ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَۖ وَهُوَ ٱللَّطِیفُ ٱلۡخَبِیرُ ۝١٠٣

No human vision perceives Him, whereas He perceives all they see. He is the All-Subtle, the All- Aware.

lā tud'rikuhu l-abṣāru wahuwa yud'riku l-abṣāra wahuwa l-laṭīfu l-khabīr

قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُم بَصَاۤىِٕرُ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ فَمَنۡ أَبۡصَرَ فَلِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَنۡ عَمِیَ فَعَلَیۡهَاۚ وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ عَلَیۡكُم بِحَفِیظࣲ ۝١٠٤

Insights have come to you from your Lord. Whoever chooses to see does so for his own good, and whoever chooses to remain blind, does so to his own loss. "I am not your keeper."

qad jāakum baṣāiru min rabbikum faman abṣara falinafsihi waman ʿamiya faʿalayhā wamā anā ʿalaykum biḥafīẓi

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ وَلِیَقُولُوا۟ دَرَسۡتَ وَلِنُبَیِّنَهُۥ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٠٥

We have explained Our revelations in various ways, so they will say, "You have received instructions" and to clarify it to people who have knowledge.

wakadhālika nuṣarrifu l-āyāti waliyaqūlū darasta walinubayyinahu liqawmin yaʿlamūn

ٱتَّبِعۡ مَاۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَ مِن رَّبِّكَۖ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٠٦

Follow what has been revealed to you by your Lord. There is no God but Him, and turn away from those who associate others with God.

ittabiʿ mā ūḥiya ilayka min rabbika lā ilāha illā huwa wa-aʿriḍ ʿani l-mush'rikīn

وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مَاۤ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ۗ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَـٰكَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ حَفِیظࣰاۖ وَمَاۤ أَنتَ عَلَیۡهِم بِوَكِیلࣲ ۝١٠٧

If God had so willed, they would not have ascribed divinity to anyone but Him. We have not made you their keeper, and neither are you responsible for their conduct.

walaw shāa l-lahu mā ashrakū wamā jaʿalnāka ʿalayhim ḥafīẓan wamā anta ʿalayhim biwakīli

وَلَا تَسُبُّوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَیَسُبُّوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَدۡوَۢا بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲۗ كَذَ ٰلِكَ زَیَّنَّا لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ عَمَلَهُمۡ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِم مَّرۡجِعُهُمۡ فَیُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٠٨

Don't insult those they worship other than God, lest in their hostility and ignorance, [they) insult God. Thus We made their deeds seem pleasing to each community, but in the end, they must return to their Lord and then He will make them [truly] understand all that they were doing.

walā tasubbū alladhīna yadʿūna min dūni l-lahi fayasubbū l-laha ʿadwan bighayri ʿil'min kadhālika zayyannā likulli ummatin ʿamalahum thumma ilā rabbihim marjiʿuhum fayunabbi-uhum bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

وَأَقۡسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ جَهۡدَ أَیۡمَـٰنِهِمۡ لَىِٕن جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ ءَایَةࣱ لَّیُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهَاۚ قُلۡ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡءَایَـٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۖ وَمَا یُشۡعِرُكُمۡ أَنَّهَاۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَتۡ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٠٩

They swear by God with their most solemn oaths that if a miracle were to be shown to them, they would believe in this Book. Say, "Miracles are up to God alone." And, for all you know, even if a miracle were shown to them, they would not believe.

wa-aqsamū bil-lahi jahda aymānihim la-in jāathum āyatun layu'minunna bihā qul innamā l-āyātu ʿinda l-lahi wamā yush'ʿirukum annahā idhā jāat lā yu'minūn

وَنُقَلِّبُ أَفۡءِدَتَهُمۡ وَأَبۡصَـٰرَهُمۡ كَمَا لَمۡ یُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِهِۦۤ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةࣲ وَنَذَرُهُمۡ فِی طُغۡیَـٰنِهِمۡ یَعۡمَهُونَ ۝١١٠

We will keep their hearts and their eyes turning. Just as they did not believe in the first place, We will leave them in their overwhelming arrogance, stumbling blindly.

wanuqallibu afidatahum wa-abṣārahum kamā lam yu'minū bihi awwala marratin wanadharuhum fī ṭugh'yānihim yaʿmahūn

14 Polytheists' Opposition

۞ وَلَوۡ أَنَّنَا نَزَّلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ وَكَلَّمَهُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ وَحَشَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ كُلَّ شَیۡءࣲ قُبُلࣰا مَّا كَانُوا۟ لِیُؤۡمِنُوۤا۟ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ یَجۡهَلُونَ ۝١١١

Even if We send angels to them, and if the dead were to speak to them and We were to assemble before them, face to face, all the things that were ever created, they would still not believe in God unless God so willed, but most of them are ignorant.

walaw annanā nazzalnā ilayhimu l-malāikata wakallamahumu l-mawtā waḥasharnā ʿalayhim kulla shayin qubulan mā kānū liyu'minū illā an yashāa l-lahu walākinna aktharahum yajhalūn

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِیٍّ عَدُوࣰّا شَیَـٰطِینَ ٱلۡإِنسِ وَٱلۡجِنِّ یُوحِی بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ زُخۡرُفَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ غُرُورࣰاۚ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ رَبُّكَ مَا فَعَلُوهُۖ فَذَرۡهُمۡ وَمَا یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝١١٢

Thus, We assigned evil humans and evil jinn as enemies to every prophet. They whisper enticing words to one another in order to deceive. But they cannot do this unless your Lord had so willed. Therefore, desert them and their invented lies,

wakadhālika jaʿalnā likulli nabiyyin ʿaduwwan shayāṭīna l-insi wal-jini yūḥī baʿḍuhum ilā baʿḍin zukh'rufa l-qawli ghurūran walaw shāa rabbuka mā faʿalūhu fadharhum wamā yaftarūn

وَلِتَصۡغَىٰۤ إِلَیۡهِ أَفۡءِدَةُ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَلِیَرۡضَوۡهُ وَلِیَقۡتَرِفُوا۟ مَا هُم مُّقۡتَرِفُونَ ۝١١٣

so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline towards their deceit, being content to continue doing whatever they are doing.

walitaṣghā ilayhi afidatu alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati waliyarḍawhu waliyaqtarifū mā hum muq'tarifūn

أَفَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ أَبۡتَغِی حَكَمࣰا وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنزَلَ إِلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ مُفَصَّلࣰاۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یَعۡلَمُونَ أَنَّهُۥ مُنَزَّلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُمۡتَرِینَ ۝١١٤

[Say], "Will I seek any judge other than God, when It is He who has sent down the Book, clearly spelling out the truth?" Those to whom We gave the Book before know that this is revealed by your Lord with the Truth. Don't be one of those who doubt.

afaghayra l-lahi abtaghī ḥakaman wahuwa alladhī anzala ilaykumu l-kitāba mufaṣṣalan wa-alladhīna ātaynāhumu l-kitāba yaʿlamūna annahu munazzalun min rabbika bil-ḥaqi falā takūnanna mina l-mum'tarīn

وَتَمَّتۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدۡقࣰا وَعَدۡلࣰاۚ لَّا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝١١٥

Your Lord's word has been fulfilled in Truth and justice. There is no power that could change His words. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

watammat kalimatu rabbika ṣid'qan waʿadlan lā mubaddila likalimātihi wahuwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

وَإِن تُطِعۡ أَكۡثَرَ مَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا یَخۡرُصُونَ ۝١١٦

If you obeyed the majority of those on earth, they will lead you away from the path of God. They follow nothing but speculation, and they are merely guessing.

wa-in tuṭiʿ akthara man fī l-arḍi yuḍillūka ʿan sabīli l-lahi in yattabiʿūna illā l-ẓana wa-in hum illā yakhruṣūn

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ مَن یَضِلُّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦۖ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِینَ ۝١١٧

Your Lord knows best who strays from his path and who is rightly-guided.

inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu man yaḍillu ʿan sabīlihi wahuwa aʿlamu bil-muh'tadīn

فَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا ذُكِرَ ٱسۡمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡهِ إِن كُنتُم بِءَایَـٰتِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨

[Believers] eat any [meat] over which God's name has been pronounced, if you truly believe in His messages.

fakulū mimmā dhukira us'mu l-lahi ʿalayhi in kuntum biāyātihi mu'minīn

وَمَا لَكُمۡ أَلَّا تَأۡكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا ذُكِرَ ٱسۡمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡهِ وَقَدۡ فَصَّلَ لَكُم مَّا حَرَّمَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ إِلَّا مَا ٱضۡطُرِرۡتُمۡ إِلَیۡهِۗ وَإِنَّ كَثِیرࣰا لَّیُضِلُّونَ بِأَهۡوَاۤىِٕهِم بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمٍۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُعۡتَدِینَ ۝١١٩

Why not eat that over which God's name has been pronounced, knowing that He has clearly spelled out to you what He has forbidden you to eat, and even that you may eat if you are compelled to do so? But many mislead others through their whims, even though they do not really know. Your Lord, however, is fully aware of these transgressors.

wamā lakum allā takulū mimmā dhukira us'mu l-lahi ʿalayhi waqad faṣṣala lakum mā ḥarrama ʿalaykum illā mā uḍ'ṭurir'tum ilayhi wa-inna kathīran layuḍillūna bi-ahwāihim bighayri ʿil'min inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu bil-muʿ'tadīn

وَذَرُوا۟ ظَـٰهِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَبَاطِنَهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَكۡسِبُونَ ٱلۡإِثۡمَ سَیُجۡزَوۡنَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَقۡتَرِفُونَ ۝١٢٠

Abstain from sins, openly or in secret. Those who commit sins will be punished for all they have committed.

wadharū ẓāhira l-ith'mi wabāṭinahu inna alladhīna yaksibūna l-ith'ma sayuj'zawna bimā kānū yaqtarifūn

وَلَا تَأۡكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا لَمۡ یُذۡكَرِ ٱسۡمُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡهِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِسۡقࣱۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینَ لَیُوحُونَ إِلَىٰۤ أَوۡلِیَاۤىِٕهِمۡ لِیُجَـٰدِلُوكُمۡۖ وَإِنۡ أَطَعۡتُمُوهُمۡ إِنَّكُمۡ لَمُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١٢١

Do not eat that over which God's name has not been pronounced, for this would be sinful conduct. The devils incite their followers to argue with you and if you listen to them, you, too, will become one of those idolaters.

walā takulū mimmā lam yudh'kari us'mu l-lahi ʿalayhi wa-innahu lafis'qun wa-inna l-shayāṭīna layūḥūna ilā awliyāihim liyujādilūkum wa-in aṭaʿtumūhum innakum lamush'rikūn

15 The Chief Opponents

أَوَ مَن كَانَ مَیۡتࣰا فَأَحۡیَیۡنَـٰهُ وَجَعَلۡنَا لَهُۥ نُورࣰا یَمۡشِی بِهِۦ فِی ٱلنَّاسِ كَمَن مَّثَلُهُۥ فِی ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ لَیۡسَ بِخَارِجࣲ مِّنۡهَاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ زُیِّنَ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢٢

Is a dead person whom We brought back to life and given enlightenment so that he might see his way among men, comparable to someone who is lost in deep darkness from which he cannot emerge? This is how it is. The evil deeds of the unbelievers are made to seem enticing to them,

awaman kāna maytan fa-aḥyaynāhu wajaʿalnā lahu nūran yamshī bihi fī l-nāsi kaman mathaluhu fī l-ẓulumāti laysa bikhārijin min'hā kadhālika zuyyina lil'kāfirīna mā kānū yaʿmalūn

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا فِی كُلِّ قَرۡیَةٍ أَكَـٰبِرَ مُجۡرِمِیهَا لِیَمۡكُرُوا۟ فِیهَاۖ وَمَا یَمۡكُرُونَ إِلَّا بِأَنفُسِهِمۡ وَمَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١٢٣

so We placed the greatest opponents in every town to execute their schemes, but they only scheme against themselves without realizing it.

wakadhālika jaʿalnā fī kulli qaryatin akābira muj'rimīhā liyamkurū fīhā wamā yamkurūna illā bi-anfusihim wamā yashʿurūn

وَإِذَا جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ ءَایَةࣱ قَالُوا۟ لَن نُّؤۡمِنَ حَتَّىٰ نُؤۡتَىٰ مِثۡلَ مَاۤ أُوتِیَ رُسُلُ ٱللَّهِۘ ٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ حَیۡثُ یَجۡعَلُ رِسَالَتَهُۥۗ سَیُصِیبُ ٱلَّذِینَ أَجۡرَمُوا۟ صَغَارٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعَذَابࣱ شَدِیدُۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَمۡكُرُونَ ۝١٢٤

Whenever a revelation comes to them, they say, "We will not believe unless we are given the same revelation as God's Messengers were given." God knows best where to place His messages. Humiliation before God and severe punishment will befall those who are guilty of opposition through their schemes.

wa-idhā jāathum āyatun qālū lan nu'mina ḥattā nu'tā mith'la mā ūtiya rusulu l-lahi l-lahu aʿlamu ḥaythu yajʿalu risālatahu sayuṣību alladhīna ajramū ṣaghārun ʿinda l-lahi waʿadhābun shadīdun bimā kānū yamkurūn

فَمَن یُرِدِ ٱللَّهُ أَن یَهۡدِیَهُۥ یَشۡرَحۡ صَدۡرَهُۥ لِلۡإِسۡلَـٰمِۖ وَمَن یُرِدۡ أَن یُضِلَّهُۥ یَجۡعَلۡ صَدۡرَهُۥ ضَیِّقًا حَرَجࣰا كَأَنَّمَا یَصَّعَّدُ فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَجۡعَلُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلرِّجۡسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٢٥

When God wishes to guide someone, He opens his heart to surrender to Him [Islam]. And whomever He wills to let go astray, He tightens and constricts his chest, as if he were ascending up to the sky. This is how God inflicts horror upon those who will not believe.

faman yuridi l-lahu an yahdiyahu yashraḥ ṣadrahu lil'is'lāmi waman yurid an yuḍillahu yajʿal ṣadrahu ḍayyiqan ḥarajan ka-annamā yaṣṣaʿʿadu fī l-samāi kadhālika yajʿalu l-lahu l-rij'sa ʿalā alladhīna lā yu'minūn

وَهَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطُ رَبِّكَ مُسۡتَقِیمࣰاۗ قَدۡ فَصَّلۡنَا ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَذَّكَّرُونَ ۝١٢٦

[Prophet], this is your Lord's path. We have clearly explained Our revelations to those who take them to heart.

wahādhā ṣirāṭu rabbika mus'taqīman qad faṣṣalnā l-āyāti liqawmin yadhakkarūn

۞ لَهُمۡ دَارُ ٱلسَّلَـٰمِ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡۖ وَهُوَ وَلِیُّهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢٧

They will have the Home of Peace with their Lord, and as a result of their deeds He will be their Protector.

lahum dāru l-salāmi ʿinda rabbihim wahuwa waliyyuhum bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

وَیَوۡمَ یَحۡشُرُهُمۡ جَمِیعࣰا یَـٰمَعۡشَرَ ٱلۡجِنِّ قَدِ ٱسۡتَكۡثَرۡتُم مِّنَ ٱلۡإِنسِۖ وَقَالَ أَوۡلِیَاۤؤُهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡإِنسِ رَبَّنَا ٱسۡتَمۡتَعَ بَعۡضُنَا بِبَعۡضࣲ وَبَلَغۡنَاۤ أَجَلَنَا ٱلَّذِیۤ أَجَّلۡتَ لَنَاۚ قَالَ ٱلنَّارُ مَثۡوَىٰكُمۡ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۤ إِلَّا مَا شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِیمٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝١٢٨

On the Day when He will gather them together [and say], "Company of jinn, you have seduced many humans." And their allies among the people will say, "Our Lord, some of us made use of others, and we have [now] reached the appointed time that You have decreed for us." He will say, "The Fire is your residence, and there you will remain eternally, unless God wills it otherwise. your Lord is All-Wise and All-Knowing."

wayawma yaḥshuruhum jamīʿan yāmaʿshara l-jini qadi is'takthartum mina l-insi waqāla awliyāuhum mina l-insi rabbanā is'tamtaʿa baʿḍunā bibaʿḍin wabalaghnā ajalanā alladhī ajjalta lanā qāla l-nāru mathwākum khālidīna fīhā illā mā shāa l-lahu inna rabbaka ḥakīmun ʿalīmu

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نُوَلِّی بَعۡضَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ بَعۡضَۢا بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝١٢٩

In this way, We cause the unjust to seduce each other by means of their own doing.

wakadhālika nuwallī baʿḍa l-ẓālimīna baʿḍan bimā kānū yaksibūn

16 Evils of Idolatry

یَـٰمَعۡشَرَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِ أَلَمۡ یَأۡتِكُمۡ رُسُلࣱ مِّنكُمۡ یَقُصُّونَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِی وَیُنذِرُونَكُمۡ لِقَاۤءَ یَوۡمِكُمۡ هَـٰذَاۚ قَالُوا۟ شَهِدۡنَا عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِنَاۖ وَغَرَّتۡهُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَشَهِدُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ أَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ كَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٣٠

"You who have lived in close company with jinn and like-minded humans, did not messengers not come from among you to recite My message and warn you of the coming of this Day [of Judgment]?" They will answer, "We bear witness against ourselves." The life of this world has seduced them, and so they will bear witness against themselves that they had rejected the truth.

yāmaʿshara l-jini wal-insi alam yatikum rusulun minkum yaquṣṣūna ʿalaykum āyātī wayundhirūnakum liqāa yawmikum hādhā qālū shahid'nā ʿalā anfusinā wagharrathumu l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā washahidū ʿalā anfusihim annahum kānū kāfirīn

ذَ ٰلِكَ أَن لَّمۡ یَكُن رَّبُّكَ مُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ بِظُلۡمࣲ وَأَهۡلُهَا غَـٰفِلُونَ ۝١٣١

This is because Your Lord would never destroy a community for its wrongdoing while its people are unaware.

dhālika an lam yakun rabbuka muh'lika l-qurā biẓul'min wa-ahluhā ghāfilūn

وَلِكُلࣲّ دَرَجَـٰتࣱ مِّمَّا عَمِلُوا۟ۚ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٣٢

Everyone will be judged according to their deeds. Your Lord is well aware of all they do.

walikullin darajātun mimmā ʿamilū wamā rabbuka bighāfilin ʿammā yaʿmalūn

وَرَبُّكَ ٱلۡغَنِیُّ ذُو ٱلرَّحۡمَةِۚ إِن یَشَأۡ یُذۡهِبۡكُمۡ وَیَسۡتَخۡلِفۡ مِنۢ بَعۡدِكُم مَّا یَشَاۤءُ كَمَاۤ أَنشَأَكُم مِّن ذُرِّیَّةِ قَوۡمٍ ءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٣٣

Your Lord alone is rich beyond need, limitless in His grace. If He wills, He may put an end to all of you and put others in your place, just as He produced you from the offspring of other people.

warabbuka l-ghaniyu dhū l-raḥmati in yasha yudh'hib'kum wayastakhlif min baʿdikum mā yashāu kamā ansha-akum min dhurriyyati qawmin ākharīn

إِنَّ مَا تُوعَدُونَ لَءَاتࣲۖ وَمَاۤ أَنتُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ ۝١٣٤

What you are promised is bound to come and you cannot escape it.

inna mā tūʿadūna laātin wamā antum bimuʿ'jizīn

قُلۡ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡمَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمۡ إِنِّی عَامِلࣱۖ فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ مَن تَكُونُ لَهُۥ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلدَّارِۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝١٣٥

Say, "My people, continue to do what you are doing, and so will I, and in time you will come to know to whom the future belongs." The unjust will never prosper.

qul yāqawmi iʿ'malū ʿalā makānatikum innī ʿāmilun fasawfa taʿlamūna man takūnu lahu ʿāqibatu l-dāri innahu lā yuf'liḥu l-ẓālimūn

وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ مِمَّا ذَرَأَ مِنَ ٱلۡحَرۡثِ وَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ نَصِیبࣰا فَقَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا لِلَّهِ بِزَعۡمِهِمۡ وَهَـٰذَا لِشُرَكَاۤىِٕنَاۖ فَمَا كَانَ لِشُرَكَاۤىِٕهِمۡ فَلَا یَصِلُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۖ وَمَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ فَهُوَ یَصِلُ إِلَىٰ شُرَكَاۤىِٕهِمۡۗ سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝١٣٦

They allocate to God a share of the fruits of the field and the cattle, saying, "This belongs to God," they claim, "and this is for our idols that, we are convinced, have a share in God's divinity." Their idols' share does not reach God, but God's share does reach their idols. How badly they judge!

wajaʿalū lillahi mimmā dhara-a mina l-ḥarthi wal-anʿāmi naṣīban faqālū hādhā lillahi bizaʿmihim wahādhā lishurakāinā famā kāna lishurakāihim falā yaṣilu ilā l-lahi wamā kāna lillahi fahuwa yaṣilu ilā shurakāihim sāa mā yaḥkumūn

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ زَیَّنَ لِكَثِیرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ قَتۡلَ أَوۡلَـٰدِهِمۡ شُرَكَاۤؤُهُمۡ لِیُرۡدُوهُمۡ وَلِیَلۡبِسُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِمۡ دِینَهُمۡۖ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا فَعَلُوهُۖ فَذَرۡهُمۡ وَمَا یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝١٣٧

In the same way, their belief in idols has seduced the pagans to kill their children, thus bringing them to ruin and confusing them in their faith. If God had so willed, they would not be doing all of this. So abandon them and all their lies.

wakadhālika zayyana likathīrin mina l-mush'rikīna qatla awlādihim shurakāuhum liyur'dūhum waliyalbisū ʿalayhim dīnahum walaw shāa l-lahu mā faʿalūhu fadharhum wamā yaftarūn

وَقَالُوا۟ هَـٰذِهِۦۤ أَنۡعَـٰمࣱ وَحَرۡثٌ حِجۡرࣱ لَّا یَطۡعَمُهَاۤ إِلَّا مَن نَّشَاۤءُ بِزَعۡمِهِمۡ وَأَنۡعَـٰمٌ حُرِّمَتۡ ظُهُورُهَا وَأَنۡعَـٰمࣱ لَّا یَذۡكُرُونَ ٱسۡمَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡهَا ٱفۡتِرَاۤءً عَلَیۡهِۚ سَیَجۡزِیهِم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝١٣٨

They also falsely claim, "These cattle and fruits are sacred, and only those we allow may eat them." They also [declare that] certain cattle are exempt from labor, and there are some cattle over which they do not pronounce God's name, falsely attributing this to Him. He will repay them for all their lies.

waqālū hādhihi anʿāmun waḥarthun ḥij'run lā yaṭʿamuhā illā man nashāu bizaʿmihim wa-anʿāmun ḥurrimat ẓuhūruhā wa-anʿāmun lā yadhkurūna is'ma l-lahi ʿalayhā if'tirāan ʿalayhi sayajzīhim bimā kānū yaftarūn

وَقَالُوا۟ مَا فِی بُطُونِ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ خَالِصَةࣱ لِّذُكُورِنَا وَمُحَرَّمٌ عَلَىٰۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجِنَاۖ وَإِن یَكُن مَّیۡتَةࣰ فَهُمۡ فِیهِ شُرَكَاۤءُۚ سَیَجۡزِیهِمۡ وَصۡفَهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِیمٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝١٣٩

They also say, "What is in the womb of such and such cattle is reserved for our men and forbidden to our women, but if the offspring is stillborn, then they may have a share of it." [God] will punish them for all that they [falsely] attribute [to Him]: He is All-Wise, All- Knowing.

waqālū mā fī buṭūni hādhihi l-anʿāmi khāliṣatun lidhukūrinā wamuḥarramun ʿalā azwājinā wa-in yakun maytatan fahum fīhi shurakāu sayajzīhim waṣfahum innahu ḥakīmun ʿalīmu

قَدۡ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ قَتَلُوۤا۟ أَوۡلَـٰدَهُمۡ سَفَهَۢا بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲ وَحَرَّمُوا۟ مَا رَزَقَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱفۡتِرَاۤءً عَلَى ٱللَّهِۚ قَدۡ ضَلُّوا۟ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُهۡتَدِینَ ۝١٤٠

Those who kill their children out of ignorance and declare as forbidden what God has provided for them as sustenance, falsely ascribing [such prohibitions] to God, are lost. They have gone astray and have not found the right path. :

qad khasira alladhīna qatalū awlādahum safahan bighayri ʿil'min waḥarramū mā razaqahumu l-lahu if'tirāan ʿalā l-lahi qad ḍallū wamā kānū muh'tadīn

17 Idolaters' Self-imposed Prohibitions

۞ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنشَأَ جَنَّـٰتࣲ مَّعۡرُوشَـٰتࣲ وَغَیۡرَ مَعۡرُوشَـٰتࣲ وَٱلنَّخۡلَ وَٱلزَّرۡعَ مُخۡتَلِفًا أُكُلُهُۥ وَٱلزَّیۡتُونَ وَٱلرُّمَّانَ مُتَشَـٰبِهࣰا وَغَیۡرَ مُتَشَـٰبِهࣲۚ كُلُوا۟ مِن ثَمَرِهِۦۤ إِذَاۤ أَثۡمَرَ وَءَاتُوا۟ حَقَّهُۥ یَوۡمَ حَصَادِهِۦۖ وَلَا تُسۡرِفُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٤١

He has brought gardens into existence, both the cultivated ones and those that grow wild, as well as the palm-tree, fields with diverse produce, the olives, and pomegranate: all similar to one another and yet so different. Eat from their fruit when it becomes ripe and give what is due on harvest day. Do not be wasteful; He does not love the wasteful.

wahuwa alladhī ansha-a jannātin maʿrūshātin waghayra maʿrūshātin wal-nakhla wal-zarʿa mukh'talifan ukuluhu wal-zaytūna wal-rumāna mutashābihan waghayra mutashābihin kulū min thamarihi idhā athmara waātū ḥaqqahu yawma ḥaṣādihi walā tus'rifū innahu lā yuḥibbu l-mus'rifīn

وَمِنَ ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ حَمُولَةࣰ وَفَرۡشࣰاۚ كُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ خُطُوَ ٰتِ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٤٢

He gave you livestock for work and for meat, so eat whatever God has provided you. Do not follow in Satan's footsteps: he is your sworn enemy.

wamina l-anʿāmi ḥamūlatan wafarshan kulū mimmā razaqakumu l-lahu walā tattabiʿū khuṭuwāti l-shayṭāni innahu lakum ʿaduwwun mubīnu

ثَمَـٰنِیَةَ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣲۖ مِّنَ ٱلضَّأۡنِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِ وَمِنَ ٱلۡمَعۡزِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِۗ قُلۡ ءَاۤلذَّكَرَیۡنِ حَرَّمَ أَمِ ٱلۡأُنثَیَیۡنِ أَمَّا ٱشۡتَمَلَتۡ عَلَیۡهِ أَرۡحَامُ ٱلۡأُنثَیَیۡنِۖ نَبِّءُونِی بِعِلۡمٍ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٤٣

There are eight animals, in [four] pairs: a pair of sheep and a pair of goats. Ask [them, Prophet], "Has He forbidden the two males, or the two females, or that which is in the wombs of the two females? Tell me what you know in this respect."

thamāniyata azwājin mina l-ḍani ith'nayni wamina l-maʿzi ith'nayni qul āldhakarayni ḥarrama ami l-unthayayni ammā ish'tamalat ʿalayhi arḥāmu l-unthayayni nabbiūnī biʿil'min in kuntum ṣādiqīn

وَمِنَ ٱلۡإِبِلِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِ وَمِنَ ٱلۡبَقَرِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِۗ قُلۡ ءَاۤلذَّكَرَیۡنِ حَرَّمَ أَمِ ٱلۡأُنثَیَیۡنِ أَمَّا ٱشۡتَمَلَتۡ عَلَیۡهِ أَرۡحَامُ ٱلۡأُنثَیَیۡنِۖ أَمۡ كُنتُمۡ شُهَدَاۤءَ إِذۡ وَصَّىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَاۚ فَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبࣰا لِّیُضِلَّ ٱلنَّاسَ بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمٍۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٤٤

And a pair of camels and a pair of cattle. Ask, "Has He forbidden the two males, or the two females, or that which is in the wombs of the two females? Were you present when God gave you these commands?" Who then is more wicked than a person who, in his ignorance, attributes his own invented lies to God, and thus misleads people? God does not guide such wicked people.

wamina l-ibili ith'nayni wamina l-baqari ith'nayni qul āldhakarayni ḥarrama ami l-unthayayni ammā ish'tamalat ʿalayhi arḥāmu l-unthayayni am kuntum shuhadāa idh waṣṣākumu l-lahu bihādhā faman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban liyuḍilla l-nāsa bighayri ʿil'min inna l-laha lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

18 Prohibited Foods

قُل لَّاۤ أَجِدُ فِی مَاۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیَّ مُحَرَّمًا عَلَىٰ طَاعِمࣲ یَطۡعَمُهُۥۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَكُونَ مَیۡتَةً أَوۡ دَمࣰا مَّسۡفُوحًا أَوۡ لَحۡمَ خِنزِیرࣲ فَإِنَّهُۥ رِجۡسٌ أَوۡ فِسۡقًا أُهِلَّ لِغَیۡرِ ٱللَّهِ بِهِۦۚ فَمَنِ ٱضۡطُرَّ غَیۡرَ بَاغࣲ وَلَا عَادࣲ فَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٤٥

Say, "In all that has been revealed to me, I do not find anything forbidden to eat, except for a dead animal, flowing blood, and pork- It is impure, or a sinful offering dedicated to idols. However, if one is driven by necessity and neither desire nor excess, your Lord is very forgiving and most Merciful-to-all."

qul lā ajidu fī mā ūḥiya ilayya muḥarraman ʿalā ṭāʿimin yaṭʿamuhu illā an yakūna maytatan aw daman masfūḥan aw laḥma khinzīrin fa-innahu rij'sun aw fis'qan uhilla lighayri l-lahi bihi famani uḍ'ṭurra ghayra bāghin walā ʿādin fa-inna rabbaka ghafūrun raḥīmu

وَعَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ هَادُوا۟ حَرَّمۡنَا كُلَّ ذِی ظُفُرࣲۖ وَمِنَ ٱلۡبَقَرِ وَٱلۡغَنَمِ حَرَّمۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ شُحُومَهُمَاۤ إِلَّا مَا حَمَلَتۡ ظُهُورُهُمَاۤ أَوِ ٱلۡحَوَایَاۤ أَوۡ مَا ٱخۡتَلَطَ بِعَظۡمࣲۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَیۡنَـٰهُم بِبَغۡیِهِمۡۖ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ ۝١٤٦

We forbade the Jews all animals that have claws and We forbade them the fat of both cattle and sheep, except what is on their backs and in their intestines or what sticks to their bones: thus, We punish them for their injustice. We are true to Our word.

waʿalā alladhīna hādū ḥarramnā kulla dhī ẓufurin wamina l-baqari wal-ghanami ḥarramnā ʿalayhim shuḥūmahumā illā mā ḥamalat ẓuhūruhumā awi l-ḥawāyā aw mā ikh'talaṭa biʿaẓmin dhālika jazaynāhum bibaghyihim wa-innā laṣādiqūn

فَإِن كَذَّبُوكَ فَقُل رَّبُّكُمۡ ذُو رَحۡمَةࣲ وَ ٰسِعَةࣲ وَلَا یُرَدُّ بَأۡسُهُۥ عَنِ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٤٧

If they accuse you of lying, say, "Your Lord is limitless in His mercy, but His punishment cannot be averted from those who force others to reject His messages."

fa-in kadhabūka faqul rabbukum dhū raḥmatin wāsiʿatin walā yuraddu basuhu ʿani l-qawmi l-muj'rimīn

سَیَقُولُ ٱلَّذِینَ أَشۡرَكُوا۟ لَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مَاۤ أَشۡرَكۡنَا وَلَاۤ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا وَلَا حَرَّمۡنَا مِن شَیۡءࣲۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ حَتَّىٰ ذَاقُوا۟ بَأۡسَنَاۗ قُلۡ هَلۡ عِندَكُم مِّنۡ عِلۡمࣲ فَتُخۡرِجُوهُ لَنَاۤۖ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنۡ أَنتُمۡ إِلَّا تَخۡرُصُونَ ۝١٤٨

Those who are bent on ascribing divinity to other than God will say, "If God had willed it, we would not have ascribed divinity to anyone beside Him, nor would our forefathers [have done so], and we also would not have declared anything He has allowed as forbidden." In the same way, those who came before them continued to deny the truth until they came to taste Our punishment. Say, "Do you have any knowledge that you can offer us? You follow suppositions, and you only guess."

sayaqūlu alladhīna ashrakū law shāa l-lahu mā ashraknā walā ābāunā walā ḥarramnā min shayin kadhālika kadhaba alladhīna min qablihim ḥattā dhāqū basanā qul hal ʿindakum min ʿil'min fatukh'rijūhu lanā in tattabiʿūna illā l-ẓana wa-in antum illā takhruṣūn

قُلۡ فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡحُجَّةُ ٱلۡبَـٰلِغَةُۖ فَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ لَهَدَىٰكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٤٩

Say, "The final evidence rests with God alone. Had He so willed, He would have guided you all."

qul falillahi l-ḥujatu l-bālighatu falaw shāa lahadākum ajmaʿīn

قُلۡ هَلُمَّ شُهَدَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ یَشۡهَدُونَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ حَرَّمَ هَـٰذَاۖ فَإِن شَهِدُوا۟ فَلَا تَشۡهَدۡ مَعَهُمۡۚ وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ أَهۡوَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَهُم بِرَبِّهِمۡ یَعۡدِلُونَ ۝١٥٠

Say, "Bring forward your witnesses who can testify that God has forbidden all this," and if they [falsely] testify, do not testify with them. Do not follow the sinful views of those who have rejected Our messages, nor of those who do not believe in the Hereafter while they equate others with their Lord.

qul halumma shuhadāakumu alladhīna yashhadūna anna l-laha ḥarrama hādhā fa-in shahidū falā tashhad maʿahum walā tattabiʿ ahwāa alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā wa-alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati wahum birabbihim yaʿdilūn

19 Guiding Rules of Life

۞ قُلۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ أَتۡلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡۖ أَلَّا تُشۡرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَبِٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَیۡنِ إِحۡسَـٰنࣰاۖ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوۤا۟ أَوۡلَـٰدَكُم مِّنۡ إِمۡلَـٰقࣲ نَّحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكُمۡ وَإِیَّاهُمۡۖ وَلَا تَقۡرَبُوا۟ ٱلۡفَوَ ٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَۖ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوا۟ ٱلنَّفۡسَ ٱلَّتِی حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ وَصَّىٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٥١

Say, "Come; let me tell you what God has forbidden you. Do not ascribe divinity to any one besides Him, relate to your parents in the best possible way, do not kill your children out of fear of poverty, since it is We who will provide sustenance for you and them. Do not commit any shameful deeds, whether they are in open or in secret, and do not take any human life which God has declared as sacred, other than in the pursuit of justice. This is what He commands you to do so that you may remember.

qul taʿālaw atlu mā ḥarrama rabbukum ʿalaykum allā tush'rikū bihi shayan wabil-wālidayni iḥ'sānan walā taqtulū awlādakum min im'lāqin naḥnu narzuqukum wa-iyyāhum walā taqrabū l-fawāḥisha mā ẓahara min'hā wamā baṭana walā taqtulū l-nafsa allatī ḥarrama l-lahu illā bil-ḥaqi dhālikum waṣṣākum bihi laʿallakum taʿqilūn

وَلَا تَقۡرَبُوا۟ مَالَ ٱلۡیَتِیمِ إِلَّا بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُ حَتَّىٰ یَبۡلُغَ أَشُدَّهُۥۚ وَأَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَٱلۡمِیزَانَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۖ لَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَاۖ وَإِذَا قُلۡتُمۡ فَٱعۡدِلُوا۟ وَلَوۡ كَانَ ذَا قُرۡبَىٰۖ وَبِعَهۡدِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡفُوا۟ۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ وَصَّىٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝١٥٢

Stay away from the property of orphans, except to improve it, until he or she comes of age." Give full measure and weight in accordance with equity. We do not burden any soul with more than it is able to bear. When you voice an opinion, be just, even if it concerns a relative. Fulfill your pledge to God. This is what He has commanded you to do so that you will remember.

walā taqrabū māla l-yatīmi illā bi-allatī hiya aḥsanu ḥattā yablugha ashuddahu wa-awfū l-kayla wal-mīzāna bil-qis'ṭi lā nukallifu nafsan illā wus'ʿahā wa-idhā qul'tum fa-iʿ'dilū walaw kāna dhā qur'bā wabiʿahdi l-lahi awfū dhālikum waṣṣākum bihi laʿallakum tadhakkarūn

وَأَنَّ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطِی مُسۡتَقِیمࣰا فَٱتَّبِعُوهُۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ ٱلسُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمۡ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ وَصَّىٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٥٣

This is My Straight Path; Follow it, and do not follow any other way, because it will cause you to deviate from it. This is what He commands you, so that you will be mindful of Him.

wa-anna hādhā ṣirāṭī mus'taqīman fa-ittabiʿūhu walā tattabiʿū l-subula fatafarraqa bikum ʿan sabīlihi dhālikum waṣṣākum bihi laʿallakum tattaqūn

ثُمَّ ءَاتَیۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ تَمَامًا عَلَى ٱلَّذِیۤ أَحۡسَنَ وَتَفۡصِیلࣰا لِّكُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣰ لَّعَلَّهُم بِلِقَاۤءِ رَبِّهِمۡ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٥٤

Then, We gave Moses the Book, complete and perfect or those who do good, clearly explaining everything, a guidance and mercy, so that they may have faith in their encounter with their Lord.

thumma ātaynā mūsā l-kitāba tamāman ʿalā alladhī aḥsana watafṣīlan likulli shayin wahudan waraḥmatan laʿallahum biliqāi rabbihim yu'minūn

20 Goal for the Faithful

وَهَـٰذَا كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ مُبَارَكࣱ فَٱتَّبِعُوهُ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ ۝١٥٥

This, too, is a blessed Book which We have sent down: follow it and be mindful of God, so that you might be graced with His mercy,

wahādhā kitābun anzalnāhu mubārakun fa-ittabiʿūhu wa-ittaqū laʿallakum tur'ḥamūn

أَن تَقُولُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أُنزِلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ عَلَىٰ طَاۤىِٕفَتَیۡنِ مِن قَبۡلِنَا وَإِن كُنَّا عَن دِرَاسَتِهِمۡ لَغَـٰفِلِینَ ۝١٥٦

so that you do not say, "a Book was only sent down to two groups before our time and we're unaware of their teachings,"

an taqūlū innamā unzila l-kitābu ʿalā ṭāifatayni min qablinā wa-in kunnā ʿan dirāsatihim laghāfilīn

أَوۡ تَقُولُوا۟ لَوۡ أَنَّاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡنَا ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ لَكُنَّاۤ أَهۡدَىٰ مِنۡهُمۡۚ فَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكُم بَیِّنَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣱۚ فَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّن كَذَّبَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَصَدَفَ عَنۡهَاۗ سَنَجۡزِی ٱلَّذِینَ یَصۡدِفُونَ عَنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا سُوۤءَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَصۡدِفُونَ ۝١٥٧

or, so that you do not say, "If a Book had been sent down to us, we would have followed its guidance better than they did." Clear evidence, guidance and mercy has come to you from your Lord. Who could be more unjust than someone who rejects God's messages and turns away in contempt? We will recompense those who turn away from Our verses with the worst of punishment for their having turned away.

aw taqūlū law annā unzila ʿalaynā l-kitābu lakunnā ahdā min'hum faqad jāakum bayyinatun min rabbikum wahudan waraḥmatun faman aẓlamu mimman kadhaba biāyāti l-lahi waṣadafa ʿanhā sanajzī alladhīna yaṣdifūna ʿan āyātinā sūa l-ʿadhābi bimā kānū yaṣdifūn

هَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُمُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ أَوۡ یَأۡتِیَ رَبُّكَ أَوۡ یَأۡتِیَ بَعۡضُ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّكَۗ یَوۡمَ یَأۡتِی بَعۡضُ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّكَ لَا یَنفَعُ نَفۡسًا إِیمَـٰنُهَا لَمۡ تَكُنۡ ءَامَنَتۡ مِن قَبۡلُ أَوۡ كَسَبَتۡ فِیۤ إِیمَـٰنِهَا خَیۡرࣰاۗ قُلِ ٱنتَظِرُوۤا۟ إِنَّا مُنتَظِرُونَ ۝١٥٨

Are they waiting for the angels to appear to them, or for your Lord to appear or for some of your Lord's signs to appear? On the Day when your Lord's signs appear, believing will be of no help to any human being who did not believe before, or who, while believing, did not do good deeds. Say, "Wait. We are also waiting."

hal yanẓurūna illā an tatiyahumu l-malāikatu aw yatiya rabbuka aw yatiya baʿḍu āyāti rabbika yawma yatī baʿḍu āyāti rabbika lā yanfaʿu nafsan īmānuhā lam takun āmanat min qablu aw kasabat fī īmānihā khayran quli intaẓirū innā muntaẓirūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ فَرَّقُوا۟ دِینَهُمۡ وَكَانُوا۟ شِیَعࣰا لَّسۡتَ مِنۡهُمۡ فِی شَیۡءٍۚ إِنَّمَاۤ أَمۡرُهُمۡ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ یُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝١٥٩

As for those who have broken the unity of their faith and have divided into different sects, you [Prophet] should have nothing to do with them. Their case rests with God, and in time He will make them understand what they were doing wrong.

inna alladhīna farraqū dīnahum wakānū shiyaʿan lasta min'hum fī shayin innamā amruhum ilā l-lahi thumma yunabbi-uhum bimā kānū yafʿalūn

مَن جَاۤءَ بِٱلۡحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُۥ عَشۡرُ أَمۡثَالِهَاۖ وَمَن جَاۤءَ بِٱلسَّیِّئَةِ فَلَا یُجۡزَىٰۤ إِلَّا مِثۡلَهَا وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝١٦٠

Whoever comes [before God] with a good deed will gain ten times its credit, but whoever comes with an evil deed will be punished with no more than its equivalent. They will not be treated unfairly.

man jāa bil-ḥasanati falahu ʿashru amthālihā waman jāa bil-sayi-ati falā yuj'zā illā mith'lahā wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

قُلۡ إِنَّنِی هَدَىٰنِی رَبِّیۤ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ دِینࣰا قِیَمࣰا مِّلَّةَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ حَنِیفࣰاۚ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٦١

Say, "My Lord has guided me on to a straight path through an ever--true faith-- the way of Abraham, who turned away from all that is false and was not one of the idolaters."

qul innanī hadānī rabbī ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmin dīnan qiyaman millata ib'rāhīma ḥanīfan wamā kāna mina l-mush'rikīn

قُلۡ إِنَّ صَلَاتِی وَنُسُكِی وَمَحۡیَایَ وَمَمَاتِی لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٢

Say, "My prayer and my acts of worship and my living and my dying belong to God, the Lord of the Worlds,

qul inna ṣalātī wanusukī wamaḥyāya wamamātī lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn

لَا شَرِیكَ لَهُۥۖ وَبِذَ ٰلِكَ أُمِرۡتُ وَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝١٦٣

in whose divinity no one has a share. I have been commanded and I will be the first to surrender myself to Him."

lā sharīka lahu wabidhālika umir'tu wa-anā awwalu l-mus'limīn

قُلۡ أَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ أَبۡغِی رَبࣰّا وَهُوَ رَبُّ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲۚ وَلَا تَكۡسِبُ كُلُّ نَفۡسٍ إِلَّا عَلَیۡهَاۚ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةࣱ وِزۡرَ أُخۡرَىٰۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُم مَّرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَیُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ فِیهِ تَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝١٦٤

Say, "Why would I look for a Lord other than God when He is the Lord of all things?" Each soul is responsible for its own actions, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burdens of another. In time you must all return to your Lord, and He will make you understand the truth about your differences.

qul aghayra l-lahi abghī rabban wahuwa rabbu kulli shayin walā taksibu kullu nafsin illā ʿalayhā walā taziru wāziratun wiz'ra ukh'rā thumma ilā rabbikum marjiʿukum fayunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum fīhi takhtalifūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَكُمۡ خَلَـٰۤىِٕفَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَرَفَعَ بَعۡضَكُمۡ فَوۡقَ بَعۡضࣲ دَرَجَـٰتࣲ لِّیَبۡلُوَكُمۡ فِی مَاۤ ءَاتَىٰكُمۡۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ سَرِیعُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمُۢ ۝١٦٥

It is He who has made you inherit the earth and has raised some of you in rank above others so that He might test you by means of what He has given to you. Your Lord is swift in punishment, but He is also forgiving and Merciful-to-all.

wahuwa alladhī jaʿalakum khalāifa l-arḍi warafaʿa baʿḍakum fawqa baʿḍin darajātin liyabluwakum fī mā ātākum inna rabbaka sarīʿu l-ʿiqābi wa-innahu laghafūrun raḥīmu
