Yet how many a town have we destroyed, and our violence came upon it by night, or while they slept at noon; and their cry, when our violence came upon them

wakam min qaryatin ahlaknāhā fajāahā basunā bayātan aw hum qāilūn

7:5

فَمَا كَانَ دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ إِذۡ جَاۤءَهُم بَأۡسُنَاۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٥

was only to say, 'Verily, we were unjust!

famā kāna daʿwāhum idh jāahum basunā illā an qālū innā kunnā ẓālimīn

7:6

فَلَنَسۡءَلَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَنَسۡءَلَنَّ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٦

But we will of a surety question those to whom the prophets were sent

falanasalanna alladhīna ur'sila ilayhim walanasalanna l-mur'salīn

7:7

فَلَنَقُصَّنَّ عَلَیۡهِم بِعِلۡمࣲۖ وَمَا كُنَّا غَاۤىِٕبِینَ ۝٧

and we will narrate to them with knowledge, for we were not absent

falanaquṣṣanna ʿalayhim biʿil'min wamā kunnā ghāibīn

7:8

وَٱلۡوَزۡنُ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ ٱلۡحَقُّۚ فَمَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَ ٰزِینُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٨

The balance on that day is true, and whosesoever scales are heavy, they are prosperous

wal-waznu yawma-idhin l-ḥaqu faman thaqulat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

7:9

وَمَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَ ٰزِینُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٩

but whosesoever scales are light, they it is who lose themselves, for that they did act unjustly by our signs

waman khaffat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulāika alladhīna khasirū anfusahum bimā kānū biāyātinā yaẓlimūn

7:10

وَلَقَدۡ مَكَّنَّـٰكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَجَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَعَـٰیِشَۗ قَلِیلࣰا مَّا تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٠

We have established you in the earth, and we have made for you therein livelihoods; little is it that ye thank

walaqad makkannākum fī l-arḍi wajaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha qalīlan mā tashkurūn

7:11

وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ ثُمَّ صَوَّرۡنَـٰكُمۡ ثُمَّ قُلۡنَا لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ ٱسۡجُدُوا۟ لِءَادَمَ فَسَجَدُوۤا۟ إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ لَمۡ یَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝١١

and we created you, then we fashioned you, then we said unto the angels, ' Adore Adam,' and they adored, save Iblis, who was not of those who did adore

walaqad khalaqnākum thumma ṣawwarnākum thumma qul'nā lil'malāikati us'judū liādama fasajadū illā ib'līsa lam yakun mina l-sājidīn

7:12

قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسۡجُدَ إِذۡ أَمَرۡتُكَۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡهُ خَلَقۡتَنِی مِن نَّارࣲ وَخَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن طِینࣲ ۝١٢

Said He, 'What hinders thee from adoring when I order thee?' he said, 'I am better than he; Thou hast created me from fire, and him Thou hast created out of clay.

qāla mā manaʿaka allā tasjuda idh amartuka qāla anā khayrun min'hu khalaqtanī min nārin wakhalaqtahu min ṭīni

7:13

قَالَ فَٱهۡبِطۡ مِنۡهَا فَمَا یَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِیهَا فَٱخۡرُجۡ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰغِرِینَ ۝١٣

Said He, 'Then go down therefrom; what ails thee that thou shouldst be big with pride therein? go forth! verily, thou art of the little ones.

qāla fa-ih'biṭ min'hā famā yakūnu laka an tatakabbara fīhā fa-ukh'ruj innaka mina l-ṣāghirīn

7:14

قَالَ أَنظِرۡنِیۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٤

He said, 'Respite me until the day when they shall be raised.

qāla anẓir'nī ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn

7:15

قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنظَرِینَ ۝١٥

He said, 'Verily, thou art of the respited;

qāla innaka mina l-munẓarīn

7:16

قَالَ فَبِمَاۤ أَغۡوَیۡتَنِی لَأَقۡعُدَنَّ لَهُمۡ صِرَ ٰطَكَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمَ ۝١٦

said he, 'For that Thou hast led me into error, I will lie in wait for them in Thy straight path

qāla fabimā aghwaytanī la-aqʿudanna lahum ṣirāṭaka l-mus'taqīm

7:17

ثُمَّ لَءَاتِیَنَّهُم مِّنۢ بَیۡنِ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ وَعَنۡ أَیۡمَـٰنِهِمۡ وَعَن شَمَاۤىِٕلِهِمۡۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ شَـٰكِرِینَ ۝١٧

then I will surely come to them, from before them and from behind them; and most of them Thou shalt not find thankful.

thumma laātiyannahum min bayni aydīhim wamin khalfihim waʿan aymānihim waʿan shamāilihim walā tajidu aktharahum shākirīn

7:18

قَالَ ٱخۡرُجۡ مِنۡهَا مَذۡءُومࣰا مَّدۡحُورࣰاۖ لَّمَن تَبِعَكَ مِنۡهُمۡ لَأَمۡلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٨

He said, 'Go forth there-from, despised, expelled; whoso follows thee, I will surely fill hell with you altogether

qāla ukh'ruj min'hā madhūman madḥūran laman tabiʿaka min'hum la-amla-anna jahannama minkum ajmaʿīn

7:19

وَیَـٰۤءَادَمُ ٱسۡكُنۡ أَنتَ وَزَوۡجُكَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنۡ حَیۡثُ شِئۡتُمَا وَلَا تَقۡرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٩

Edward Henry Palmer

But, O Adam, dwell thou and thy wife in Paradise and eat from whence ye will, but draw not nigh unto this tree or ye will be of the unjust.

wayāādamu us'kun anta wazawjuka l-janata fakulā min ḥaythu shi'tumā walā taqrabā hādhihi l-shajarata fatakūnā mina l-ẓālimīn

7:20

فَوَسۡوَسَ لَهُمَا ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ لِیُبۡدِیَ لَهُمَا مَا وُۥرِیَ عَنۡهُمَا مِن سَوۡءَ ٰتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَىٰكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنۡ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَیۡنِ أَوۡ تَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰلِدِینَ ۝٢٠

But Satan whispered to them to display to them what was kept back from them of their shame, and he said, 'Your Lord has only forbidden you this tree lest ye should be twain angels, or should become of the immortals;

fawaswasa lahumā l-shayṭānu liyub'diya lahumā mā wūriya ʿanhumā min sawātihimā waqāla mā nahākumā rabbukumā ʿan hādhihi l-shajarati illā an takūnā malakayni aw takūnā mina l-khālidīn

7:21

وَقَاسَمَهُمَاۤ إِنِّی لَكُمَا لَمِنَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِینَ ۝٢١

and he swore to them both, 'Verily, I am unto you a sincere adviser;

waqāsamahumā innī lakumā lamina l-nāṣiḥīn

7:22

فَدَلَّىٰهُمَا بِغُرُورࣲۚ فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا ٱلشَّجَرَةَ بَدَتۡ لَهُمَا سَوۡءَ ٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا یَخۡصِفَانِ عَلَیۡهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ وَنَادَىٰهُمَا رَبُّهُمَاۤ أَلَمۡ أَنۡهَكُمَا عَن تِلۡكُمَا ٱلشَّجَرَةِ وَأَقُل لَّكُمَاۤ إِنَّ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنَ لَكُمَا عَدُوࣱّ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٢٢

and he beguiled them by deceit, and when they twain tasted of the tree, their shame was shown them, and they began to stitch upon themselves the leaves of the garden. And their Lord called unto them, 'Did I not forbid you from that tree there, and say to you, Verily, Satan is to you an open foe?

fadallāhumā bighurūrin falammā dhāqā l-shajarata badat lahumā sawātuhumā waṭafiqā yakhṣifāni ʿalayhimā min waraqi l-janati wanādāhumā rabbuhumā alam anhakumā ʿan til'kumā l-shajarati wa-aqul lakumā inna l-shayṭāna lakumā ʿaduwwun mubīnu

7:23

قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمۡنَاۤ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمۡ تَغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَتَرۡحَمۡنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٢٣

Edward Henry Palmer

They said, 'O our Lord! we have wronged ourselves - and if Thou dost not forgive us and have mercy on us, we shall surely be of those who are lost!

qālā rabbanā ẓalamnā anfusanā wa-in lam taghfir lanā watarḥamnā lanakūnanna mina l-khāsirīn

7:24

قَالَ ٱهۡبِطُوا۟ بَعۡضُكُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوࣱّۖ وَلَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُسۡتَقَرࣱّ وَمَتَـٰعٌ إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝٢٤

Edward Henry Palmer

He said, 'Go ye down, one of you to the other a foe; but for you in the earth there is an abode, and a provision for a season.

qāla ih'biṭū baʿḍukum libaʿḍin ʿaduwwun walakum fī l-arḍi mus'taqarrun wamatāʿun ilā ḥīni

7:25

قَالَ فِیهَا تَحۡیَوۡنَ وَفِیهَا تَمُوتُونَ وَمِنۡهَا تُخۡرَجُونَ ۝٢٥

Edward Henry Palmer

He said, 'Therein shall ye live and therein shall ye die, from it shall ye be brought forth.

qāla fīhā taḥyawna wafīhā tamūtūna wamin'hā tukh'rajūn

7:26

یَـٰبَنِیۤ ءَادَمَ قَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡكُمۡ لِبَاسࣰا یُوَ ٰرِی سَوۡءَ ٰتِكُمۡ وَرِیشࣰاۖ وَلِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ ذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَذَّكَّرُونَ ۝٢٦

Edward Henry Palmer

O sons of Adam! we have sent down to you garments wherewith to cover your shame, and plumage; but the garment of piety, that is better. That is one of the signs of God, haply ye may remember

yābanī ādama qad anzalnā ʿalaykum libāsan yuwārī sawātikum warīshan walibāsu l-taqwā dhālika khayrun dhālika min āyāti l-lahi laʿallahum yadhakkarūn

7:27

یَـٰبَنِیۤ ءَادَمَ لَا یَفۡتِنَنَّكُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ كَمَاۤ أَخۡرَجَ أَبَوَیۡكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ یَنزِعُ عَنۡهُمَا لِبَاسَهُمَا لِیُرِیَهُمَا سَوۡءَ ٰتِهِمَاۤۚ إِنَّهُۥ یَرَىٰكُمۡ هُوَ وَقَبِیلُهُۥ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا تَرَوۡنَهُمۡۗ إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَا ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینَ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ لِلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٢٧

Edward Henry Palmer

O sons of Adam! let not Satan infatuate you as he drove your parents out of Paradise, stripping from them their garments, and showing them their shame; verily, he sees you - he and his tribe, from whence ye cannot see them. Verily, we have made the devils patrons of those who do not believe

yābanī ādama lā yaftinannakumu l-shayṭānu kamā akhraja abawaykum mina l-janati yanziʿu ʿanhumā libāsahumā liyuriyahumā sawātihimā innahu yarākum huwa waqabīluhu min ḥaythu lā tarawnahum innā jaʿalnā l-shayāṭīna awliyāa lilladhīna lā yu'minūn

7:28

وَإِذَا فَعَلُوا۟ فَـٰحِشَةࣰ قَالُوا۟ وَجَدۡنَا عَلَیۡهَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا وَٱللَّهُ أَمَرَنَا بِهَاۗ قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَأۡمُرُ بِٱلۡفَحۡشَاۤءِۖ أَتَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٨

Edward Henry Palmer

and when they commit an abomination they say, 'We found our fathers at this, and God bade us do it.' Say, 'God bids you not to do abomination; do ye say against God that which ye do not know?

wa-idhā faʿalū fāḥishatan qālū wajadnā ʿalayhā ābāanā wal-lahu amaranā bihā qul inna l-laha lā yamuru bil-faḥshāi ataqūlūna ʿalā l-lahi mā lā taʿlamūn

7:29

قُلۡ أَمَرَ رَبِّی بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۖ وَأَقِیمُوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمۡ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسۡجِدࣲ وَٱدۡعُوهُ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَۚ كَمَا بَدَأَكُمۡ تَعُودُونَ ۝٢٩

Say, 'My Lord bids only justice: - set steadfastly your faces at every mosque and pray to Him, being sincere in your religion. As He brought you forth in the beginning, shall ye return

qul amara rabbī bil-qis'ṭi wa-aqīmū wujūhakum ʿinda kulli masjidin wa-id'ʿūhu mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna kamā bada-akum taʿūdūn

7:30

فَرِیقًا هَدَىٰ وَفَرِیقًا حَقَّ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةُۚ إِنَّهُمُ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینَ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَیَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ۝٣٠

Edward Henry Palmer

A sect He guides, and for a sect of them was error due; verily, they did take the devils for their patrons instead of God, and they did count that they were guided.

farīqan hadā wafarīqan ḥaqqa ʿalayhimu l-ḍalālatu innahumu ittakhadhū l-shayāṭīna awliyāa min dūni l-lahi wayaḥsabūna annahum muh'tadūn

7:31

۞ یَـٰبَنِیۤ ءَادَمَ خُذُوا۟ زِینَتَكُمۡ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسۡجِدࣲ وَكُلُوا۟ وَٱشۡرَبُوا۟ وَلَا تُسۡرِفُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝٣١

Edward Henry Palmer

O sons of Adam! take your ornaments to every mosque; and eat and drink, but do not be extravagant, for He loves not the extravagant

yābanī ādama khudhū zīnatakum ʿinda kulli masjidin wakulū wa-ish'rabū walā tus'rifū innahu lā yuḥibbu l-mus'rifīn

7:32

قُلۡ مَنۡ حَرَّمَ زِینَةَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِیۤ أَخۡرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِۦ وَٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِ مِنَ ٱلرِّزۡقِۚ قُلۡ هِیَ لِلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا خَالِصَةࣰ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٢

Edward Henry Palmer

Say, 'Who has prohibited the ornaments of God which He brought forth for His servants, and the good things of His providing?' say, 'On the day of judgment they shall only be for those who believed when in the life of this world.' Thus do we detail the signs unto a people that do know

qul man ḥarrama zīnata l-lahi allatī akhraja liʿibādihi wal-ṭayibāti mina l-riz'qi qul hiya lilladhīna āmanū fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā khāliṣatan yawma l-qiyāmati kadhālika nufaṣṣilu l-āyāti liqawmin yaʿlamūn

7:33

قُلۡ إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ رَبِّیَ ٱلۡفَوَ ٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَٱلۡإِثۡمَ وَٱلۡبَغۡیَ بِغَیۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَن تُشۡرِكُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ مَا لَمۡ یُنَزِّلۡ بِهِۦ سُلۡطَـٰنࣰا وَأَن تَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٣

Edward Henry Palmer

Say, 'My Lord has rely prohibited abominable deeds, the apparent thereof and the concealed thereof, and sin, and greed for that which is not right, and associating with God what He has sent down no power for, and saying against God that which ye do not know.

qul innamā ḥarrama rabbiya l-fawāḥisha mā ẓahara min'hā wamā baṭana wal-ith'ma wal-baghya bighayri l-ḥaqi wa-an tush'rikū bil-lahi mā lam yunazzil bihi sul'ṭānan wa-an taqūlū ʿalā l-lahi mā lā taʿlamūn

7:34

وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلࣱۖ فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهُمۡ لَا یَسۡتَأۡخِرُونَ سَاعَةࣰ وَلَا یَسۡتَقۡدِمُونَ ۝٣٤

Every nation has its appointed time, and when their appointed time comes they cannot keep it back an hour, nor can they bring it on

walikulli ummatin ajalun fa-idhā jāa ajaluhum lā yastakhirūna sāʿatan walā yastaqdimūn

7:35

یَـٰبَنِیۤ ءَادَمَ إِمَّا یَأۡتِیَنَّكُمۡ رُسُلࣱ مِّنكُمۡ یَقُصُّونَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِی فَمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰ وَأَصۡلَحَ فَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٣٥

Edward Henry Palmer

O sons of Adam! verily, there will come to you apostles from amongst you, narrating unto you my signs; then whoso fears God and does what is right, there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve

yābanī ādama immā yatiyannakum rusulun minkum yaquṣṣūna ʿalaykum āyātī famani ittaqā wa-aṣlaḥa falā khawfun ʿalayhim walā hum yaḥzanūn

7:36

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ عَنۡهَاۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٣٦

Edward Henry Palmer

But those who say my signs are lies, and who are too big with pride for them, these are the fellows of the Fire, they shall dwell therein for aye

wa-alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā wa-is'takbarū ʿanhā ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn

7:37

فَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوۡ كَذَّبَ بِءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یَنَالُهُمۡ نَصِیبُهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُنَا یَتَوَفَّوۡنَهُمۡ قَالُوۤا۟ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۖ قَالُوا۟ ضَلُّوا۟ عَنَّا وَشَهِدُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ أَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ كَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٣٧

Who is more unjust than he who devises against God a lie, or says His signs are lies? These, their portion of the Book shall reach them, until when our messengers come to take their souls away, and say, 'Where is what ye used to call upon instead of God?' they say, 'They have strayed away from us;' and they shall bear witness against themselves that they have been misbelievers

faman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban aw kadhaba biāyātihi ulāika yanāluhum naṣībuhum mina l-kitābi ḥattā idhā jāathum rusulunā yatawaffawnahum qālū ayna mā kuntum tadʿūna min dūni l-lahi qālū ḍallū ʿannā washahidū ʿalā anfusihim annahum kānū kāfirīn

7:38

قَالَ ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ فِیۤ أُمَمࣲ قَدۡ خَلَتۡ مِن قَبۡلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِ فِی ٱلنَّارِۖ كُلَّمَا دَخَلَتۡ أُمَّةࣱ لَّعَنَتۡ أُخۡتَهَاۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا ٱدَّارَكُوا۟ فِیهَا جَمِیعࣰا قَالَتۡ أُخۡرَىٰهُمۡ لِأُولَىٰهُمۡ رَبَّنَا هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ أَضَلُّونَا فَءَاتِهِمۡ عَذَابࣰا ضِعۡفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِۖ قَالَ لِكُلࣲّ ضِعۡفࣱ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٨

Edward Henry Palmer

He will say, 'Enter ye - amongst the nations who have passed away before you, both of ginns and men - into the fire;' whenever a nation enters therein, it curses its mate; until, when they have all reached it, the last of them will say unto the first, 'O our Lord! these it was who led us astray, give them double torment of the fire!' He will say, 'To each of you double! but ye do not know.

qāla ud'khulū fī umamin qad khalat min qablikum mina l-jini wal-insi fī l-nāri kullamā dakhalat ummatun laʿanat ukh'tahā ḥattā idhā iddārakū fīhā jamīʿan qālat ukh'rāhum liūlāhum rabbanā hāulāi aḍallūnā faātihim ʿadhāban ḍiʿ'fan mina l-nāri qāla likullin ḍiʿ'fun walākin lā taʿlamūn

7:39

وَقَالَتۡ أُولَىٰهُمۡ لِأُخۡرَىٰهُمۡ فَمَا كَانَ لَكُمۡ عَلَیۡنَا مِن فَضۡلࣲ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٣٩

Edward Henry Palmer

And the first of them will say unto the last, 'Ye have no preference over us, so taste ye the torment for that which ye have earned!

waqālat ūlāhum li-ukh'rāhum famā kāna lakum ʿalaynā min faḍlin fadhūqū l-ʿadhāba bimā kuntum taksibūn

7:40

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ عَنۡهَا لَا تُفَتَّحُ لَهُمۡ أَبۡوَ ٰبُ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَلَا یَدۡخُلُونَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ حَتَّىٰ یَلِجَ ٱلۡجَمَلُ فِی سَمِّ ٱلۡخِیَاطِۚ وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٤٠

Edward Henry Palmer

Verily, those who say our signs are lies and are too big with pride for them; for these the doors of heaven shall not be opened, and they shall not enter into Paradise until a camel shall pass into a needle's eye

inna alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā wa-is'takbarū ʿanhā lā tufattaḥu lahum abwābu l-samāi walā yadkhulūna l-janata ḥattā yalija l-jamalu fī sammi l-khiyāṭi wakadhālika najzī l-muj'rimīn

7:41

لَهُم مِّن جَهَنَّمَ مِهَادࣱ وَمِن فَوۡقِهِمۡ غَوَاشࣲۚ وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٤١

Edward Henry Palmer

It is thus that we reward the sinners; for them is a couch of hell-fire, with an awning above them! thus do we reward the unjust

lahum min jahannama mihādun wamin fawqihim ghawāshin wakadhālika najzī l-ẓālimīn

7:42

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَاۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٤٢

Edward Henry Palmer

But those who believe and do what is right - we will not oblige a soul more than its capacity - they are the fellows of Paradise, they shall dwell therein for aye

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lā nukallifu nafsan illā wus'ʿahā ulāika aṣḥābu l-janati hum fīhā khālidūn

7:43

وَنَزَعۡنَا مَا فِی صُدُورِهِم مِّنۡ غِلࣲّ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهِمُ ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُۖ وَقَالُوا۟ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِی هَدَىٰنَا لِهَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهۡتَدِیَ لَوۡلَاۤ أَنۡ هَدَىٰنَا ٱللَّهُۖ لَقَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ وَنُودُوۤا۟ أَن تِلۡكُمُ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُورِثۡتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٤٣

Edward Henry Palmer

We will strip away what ill feeling is in their breasts - there shall flow beneath them rivers, and they shall say, 'Praise belongs to God who guided us to this! for we should not have been guided had not God guided us! - the apostles of our Lord did come to us with truth!' And it shall be cried out to them, 'This is Paradise which ye have as an inheritance for that which ye have done!

wanazaʿnā mā fī ṣudūrihim min ghillin tajrī min taḥtihimu l-anhāru waqālū l-ḥamdu lillahi alladhī hadānā lihādhā wamā kunnā linahtadiya lawlā an hadānā l-lahu laqad jāat rusulu rabbinā bil-ḥaqi wanūdū an til'kumu l-janatu ūrith'tumūhā bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

7:44

وَنَادَىٰۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ أَن قَدۡ وَجَدۡنَا مَا وَعَدَنَا رَبُّنَا حَقࣰّا فَهَلۡ وَجَدتُّم مَّا وَعَدَ رَبُّكُمۡ حَقࣰّاۖ قَالُوا۟ نَعَمۡۚ فَأَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنُۢ بَیۡنَهُمۡ أَن لَّعۡنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٤٤

And the fellows of Paradise will call out to the fellows of the Fire, 'We have now found that what our Lord promised us is true; have ye found that what your Lord promised you is true?' They will say, 'Yea!' And a crier from amongst them will cry out, 'The curse of God is on the unjus

wanādā aṣḥābu l-janati aṣḥāba l-nāri an qad wajadnā mā waʿadanā rabbunā ḥaqqan fahal wajadttum mā waʿada rabbukum ḥaqqan qālū naʿam fa-adhana mu-adhinun baynahum an laʿnatu l-lahi ʿalā l-ẓālimīn

7:45

ٱلَّذِینَ یَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَیَبۡغُونَهَا عِوَجࣰا وَهُم بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٤٥

Edward Henry Palmer

who turn from the way of God and crave to make it crooked, while in the hereafter they do disbelieve!

alladhīna yaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi wayabghūnahā ʿiwajan wahum bil-ākhirati kāfirūn

7:46

وَبَیۡنَهُمَا حِجَابࣱۚ وَعَلَى ٱلۡأَعۡرَافِ رِجَالࣱ یَعۡرِفُونَ كُلَّۢا بِسِیمَىٰهُمۡۚ وَنَادَوۡا۟ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ أَن سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَیۡكُمۡۚ لَمۡ یَدۡخُلُوهَا وَهُمۡ یَطۡمَعُونَ ۝٤٦

Edward Henry Palmer

And betwixt the two there is a veil, and on al Aaraf are men who know each by marks; and they shall cry out to the fellows of Paradise, 'Peace be upon you!' they cannot enter it although they so desire

wabaynahumā ḥijābun waʿalā l-aʿrāfi rijālun yaʿrifūna kullan bisīmāhum wanādaw aṣḥāba l-janati an salāmun ʿalaykum lam yadkhulūhā wahum yaṭmaʿūn

7:47

۞ وَإِذَا صُرِفَتۡ أَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ تِلۡقَاۤءَ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلنَّارِ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا مَعَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٤٧

Edward Henry Palmer

But when their sight is turned towards the fellows of the Fire, they say, 'O our Lord! place us not with the unjust people.

wa-idhā ṣurifat abṣāruhum til'qāa aṣḥābi l-nāri qālū rabbanā lā tajʿalnā maʿa l-qawmi l-ẓālimīn

7:48

وَنَادَىٰۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأَعۡرَافِ رِجَالࣰا یَعۡرِفُونَهُم بِسِیمَىٰهُمۡ قَالُوا۟ مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنكُمۡ جَمۡعُكُمۡ وَمَا كُنتُمۡ تَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٤٨

Edward Henry Palmer

And the fellows on al Aaraf will cry out to the men whom they know by their marks, and say, 'Of no avail to you were your collections, and what ye were so big with pride about

wanādā aṣḥābu l-aʿrāfi rijālan yaʿrifūnahum bisīmāhum qālū mā aghnā ʿankum jamʿukum wamā kuntum tastakbirūn

7:49

أَهَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ ٱلَّذِینَ أَقۡسَمۡتُمۡ لَا یَنَالُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِرَحۡمَةٍۚ ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَنتُمۡ تَحۡزَنُونَ ۝٤٩

Edward Henry Palmer

are these those ye swore that God would not extend mercy to? Enter ye Paradise; there is no fear for you, nor shall ye be grieved.

ahāulāi alladhīna aqsamtum lā yanāluhumu l-lahu biraḥmatin ud'khulū l-janata lā khawfun ʿalaykum walā antum taḥzanūn

7:50

وَنَادَىٰۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ أَنۡ أَفِیضُوا۟ عَلَیۡنَا مِنَ ٱلۡمَاۤءِ أَوۡ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُۚ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ حَرَّمَهُمَا عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٥٠

Edward Henry Palmer

But the fellows of the Fire shall cry out to the fellows of Paradise, 'Pour out upon us water, or something of what God has provided you with.' They will say, 'God has prohibited them both to those who misbelieve

wanādā aṣḥābu l-nāri aṣḥāba l-janati an afīḍū ʿalaynā mina l-māi aw mimmā razaqakumu l-lahu qālū inna l-laha ḥarramahumā ʿalā l-kāfirīn

7:51

ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ دِینَهُمۡ لَهۡوࣰا وَلَعِبࣰا وَغَرَّتۡهُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ فَٱلۡیَوۡمَ نَنسَىٰهُمۡ كَمَا نَسُوا۟ لِقَاۤءَ یَوۡمِهِمۡ هَـٰذَا وَمَا كَانُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا یَجۡحَدُونَ ۝٥١

Edward Henry Palmer

who took their religion for a sport and a play; whom the life of the world beguiled.' - Today do we forget them as they forgot the meeting of this day, and for that they did deny our signs

alladhīna ittakhadhū dīnahum lahwan walaʿiban wagharrathumu l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā fal-yawma nansāhum kamā nasū liqāa yawmihim hādhā wamā kānū biāyātinā yajḥadūn

7:52

وَلَقَدۡ جِئۡنَـٰهُم بِكِتَـٰبࣲ فَصَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمٍ هُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥٢

Edward Henry Palmer

Now we have brought them a book explaining it in knowledge, a guidance and a mercy to a people who believe

walaqad ji'nāhum bikitābin faṣṣalnāhu ʿalā ʿil'min hudan waraḥmatan liqawmin yu'minūn

7:53

هَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا تَأۡوِیلَهُۥۚ یَوۡمَ یَأۡتِی تَأۡوِیلُهُۥ یَقُولُ ٱلَّذِینَ نَسُوهُ مِن قَبۡلُ قَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِٱلۡحَقِّ فَهَل لَّنَا مِن شُفَعَاۤءَ فَیَشۡفَعُوا۟ لَنَاۤ أَوۡ نُرَدُّ فَنَعۡمَلَ غَیۡرَ ٱلَّذِی كُنَّا نَعۡمَلُۚ قَدۡ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَضَلَّ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٥٣

Do they wait now for aught but its interpretation?- on the day when its interpretation shall come, those who forgot it before will say, There did come to us the apostles of our Lord in truth, have we intercessors to intercede for us? or, could we return, we would do otherwise than we did.' They have lost themselves, and that which they devised has strayed away from them

hal yanẓurūna illā tawīlahu yawma yatī tawīluhu yaqūlu alladhīna nasūhu min qablu qad jāat rusulu rabbinā bil-ḥaqi fahal lanā min shufaʿāa fayashfaʿū lanā aw nuraddu fanaʿmala ghayra alladhī kunnā naʿmalu qad khasirū anfusahum waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūn

7:54

إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامࣲ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِۖ یُغۡشِی ٱلَّیۡلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ یَطۡلُبُهُۥ حَثِیثࣰا وَٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ وَٱلنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَ ٰتِۭ بِأَمۡرِهِۦۤۗ أَلَا لَهُ ٱلۡخَلۡقُ وَٱلۡأَمۡرُۗ تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٥٤

Edward Henry Palmer

Verily, your Lord is God who created the heavens and the earth in six days; then He made for the Throne. He covers night with the day - it pursues it incessantly - and the sun and the moon and the stars are subject to His bidding. Aye!- His is the creation and the bidding,- blessed be God the Lord of the worlds

inna rabbakumu l-lahu alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa fī sittati ayyāmin thumma is'tawā ʿalā l-ʿarshi yugh'shī al-layla l-nahāra yaṭlubuhu ḥathīthan wal-shamsa wal-qamara wal-nujūma musakharātin bi-amrihi alā lahu l-khalqu wal-amru tabāraka l-lahu rabbu l-ʿālamīn

7:55

ٱدۡعُوا۟ رَبَّكُمۡ تَضَرُّعࣰا وَخُفۡیَةًۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدِینَ ۝٥٥

Edward Henry Palmer

Call on your Lord humbly and secretly, verily, He loves not the transgressors

id'ʿū rabbakum taḍarruʿan wakhuf'yatan innahu lā yuḥibbu l-muʿ'tadīn

7:56

وَلَا تُفۡسِدُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بَعۡدَ إِصۡلَـٰحِهَا وَٱدۡعُوهُ خَوۡفࣰا وَطَمَعًاۚ إِنَّ رَحۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ قَرِیبࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٥٦

Edward Henry Palmer

And do not evil in the earth after it has been righted; and call upon Him with fear and earnestness; verily, the mercy of God is nigh unto those who do well

walā tuf'sidū fī l-arḍi baʿda iṣ'lāḥihā wa-id'ʿūhu khawfan waṭamaʿan inna raḥmata l-lahi qarībun mina l-muḥ'sinīn

7:57

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُرۡسِلُ ٱلرِّیَـٰحَ بُشۡرَۢا بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡ رَحۡمَتِهِۦۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَاۤ أَقَلَّتۡ سَحَابࣰا ثِقَالࣰا سُقۡنَـٰهُ لِبَلَدࣲ مَّیِّتࣲ فَأَنزَلۡنَا بِهِ ٱلۡمَاۤءَ فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا بِهِۦ مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٥٧

Edward Henry Palmer

He it is who sends forth the winds as heralds before His mercy; until when they lift the heavy cloud which we drive to a dead land, and send down thereon water, and bring forth therewith every kind of fruit; - thus do we brine, forth the dead; haply ye may remember

wahuwa alladhī yur'silu l-riyāḥa bush'ran bayna yaday raḥmatihi ḥattā idhā aqallat saḥāban thiqālan suq'nāhu libaladin mayyitin fa-anzalnā bihi l-māa fa-akhrajnā bihi min kulli l-thamarāti kadhālika nukh'riju l-mawtā laʿallakum tadhakkarūn

7:58

وَٱلۡبَلَدُ ٱلطَّیِّبُ یَخۡرُجُ نَبَاتُهُۥ بِإِذۡنِ رَبِّهِۦۖ وَٱلَّذِی خَبُثَ لَا یَخۡرُجُ إِلَّا نَكِدࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٥٨

Edward Henry Palmer

And the good land brings forth its vegetation by the permission of its Lord; and that which is vile brings forth naught but scarcity. Thus do we turn about our signs for a people who are grateful

wal-baladu l-ṭayibu yakhruju nabātuhu bi-idh'ni rabbihi wa-alladhī khabutha lā yakhruju illā nakidan kadhālika nuṣarrifu l-āyāti liqawmin yashkurūn

7:59

لَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ فَقَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۤ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝٥٩

Edward Henry Palmer

We did send Noah unto his people, and he said, 'O my people! serve God, ye have no god but Him; verily, I fear for you the torment of the mighty day.

laqad arsalnā nūḥan ilā qawmihi faqāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

7:60

قَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِن قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِنَّا لَنَرَىٰكَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٦٠

Edward Henry Palmer

Said the chiefs of his people, 'Verily, we do surely see you in obvious error.

qāla l-mala-u min qawmihi innā lanarāka fī ḍalālin mubīni

7:61

قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ لَیۡسَ بِی ضَلَـٰلَةࣱ وَلَـٰكِنِّی رَسُولࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٦١

Edward Henry Palmer

Said he, 'O my people! there is no error in me; but I am an apostle from the Lord of the worlds

qāla yāqawmi laysa bī ḍalālatun walākinnī rasūlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn

7:62

أُبَلِّغُكُمۡ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّی وَأَنصَحُ لَكُمۡ وَأَعۡلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٢

Edward Henry Palmer

I preach to you the messages of my Lord, and I give you sincere advice; and I know from God what ye know not

uballighukum risālāti rabbī wa-anṣaḥu lakum wa-aʿlamu mina l-lahi mā lā taʿlamūn

7:63

أَوَعَجِبۡتُمۡ أَن جَاۤءَكُمۡ ذِكۡرࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ عَلَىٰ رَجُلࣲ مِّنكُمۡ لِیُنذِرَكُمۡ وَلِتَتَّقُوا۟ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ ۝٦٣

Edward Henry Palmer

What! do ye wonder that there came to you a reminder from your Lord by a man from amongst yourselves, to warn you, and that ye may fear? but haply ye may receive mercy.

awaʿajib'tum an jāakum dhik'run min rabbikum ʿalā rajulin minkum liyundhirakum walitattaqū walaʿallakum tur'ḥamūn

7:64

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَٱلَّذِینَ مَعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ وَأَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَوۡمًا عَمِینَ ۝٦٤

Edward Henry Palmer

But they called him a liar, and we rescued him and those who were with him in the ark; and we drowned those who said our signs were lies, verily, they were a blind people

fakadhabūhu fa-anjaynāhu wa-alladhīna maʿahu fī l-ful'ki wa-aghraqnā alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā innahum kānū qawman ʿamīn

7:65

۞ وَإِلَىٰ عَادٍ أَخَاهُمۡ هُودࣰاۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۤۚ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝٦٥

Edward Henry Palmer

And unto 'Ad (we sent) their brother Hud, who said, 'O my people! serve God, ye have no god save Him; what! will ye not then fear?

wa-ilā ʿādin akhāhum hūdan qāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu afalā tattaqūn

7:66

قَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِنَّا لَنَرَىٰكَ فِی سَفَاهَةࣲ وَإِنَّا لَنَظُنُّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝٦٦

Edward Henry Palmer

Said the chiefs of those who misbelieved amongst his people, 'Verily, we see thee in folly, and, verily, we certainly think thou art of the liars.

qāla l-mala-u alladhīna kafarū min qawmihi innā lanarāka fī safāhatin wa-innā lanaẓunnuka mina l-kādhibīn

7:67

قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ لَیۡسَ بِی سَفَاهَةࣱ وَلَـٰكِنِّی رَسُولࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٦٧

Edward Henry Palmer

He said, 'O my people! there is no folly in me; but I am an apostle from the Lord of the worlds

qāla yāqawmi laysa bī safāhatun walākinnī rasūlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn

7:68

أُبَلِّغُكُمۡ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّی وَأَنَا۠ لَكُمۡ نَاصِحٌ أَمِینٌ ۝٦٨

I preach to you the messages of your Lord; and, verily, I am to you a faithful adviser

uballighukum risālāti rabbī wa-anā lakum nāṣiḥun amīnu

7:69

أَوَعَجِبۡتُمۡ أَن جَاۤءَكُمۡ ذِكۡرࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ عَلَىٰ رَجُلࣲ مِّنكُمۡ لِیُنذِرَكُمۡۚ وَٱذۡكُرُوۤا۟ إِذۡ جَعَلَكُمۡ خُلَفَاۤءَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ قَوۡمِ نُوحࣲ وَزَادَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡخَلۡقِ بَصۜۡطَةࣰۖ فَٱذۡكُرُوۤا۟ ءَالَاۤءَ ٱللَّهِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٦٩

Edward Henry Palmer

What! do ye then wonder that there comes to you a reminder from your Lord by a man from amongst yourselves, to warn you? remember when He made you vicegerents after Noah's people and increased you in length of stature; remember, then, the benefits of God,- haply ye may prosper!

awaʿajib'tum an jāakum dhik'run min rabbikum ʿalā rajulin minkum liyundhirakum wa-udh'kurū idh jaʿalakum khulafāa min baʿdi qawmi nūḥin wazādakum fī l-khalqi baṣ'ṭatan fa-udh'kurū ālāa l-lahi laʿallakum tuf'liḥūn

7:70

قَالُوۤا۟ أَجِئۡتَنَا لِنَعۡبُدَ ٱللَّهَ وَحۡدَهُۥ وَنَذَرَ مَا كَانَ یَعۡبُدُ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا فَأۡتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَاۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٧٠

Edward Henry Palmer

They said, 'Hast thou come to us that we may worship God alone, and leave what our fathers used to worship? then bring us what thou dost threaten us with, if thou art of those who tell the truth!

qālū aji'tanā linaʿbuda l-laha waḥdahu wanadhara mā kāna yaʿbudu ābāunā fatinā bimā taʿidunā in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

7:71

قَالَ قَدۡ وَقَعَ عَلَیۡكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ رِجۡسࣱ وَغَضَبٌۖ أَتُجَـٰدِلُونَنِی فِیۤ أَسۡمَاۤءࣲ سَمَّیۡتُمُوهَاۤ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُم مَّا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَـٰنࣲۚ فَٱنتَظِرُوۤا۟ إِنِّی مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُنتَظِرِینَ ۝٧١

He said, 'There shall fall upon you from your Lord horror and wrath; do ye wrangle with me about names, which ye and your fathers have named yourselves, for which God sent down no power; wait then expectant, and I with you will wait expectant too

qāla qad waqaʿa ʿalaykum min rabbikum rij'sun waghaḍabun atujādilūnanī fī asmāin sammaytumūhā antum waābāukum mā nazzala l-lahu bihā min sul'ṭānin fa-intaẓirū innī maʿakum mina l-muntaẓirīn

7:72

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَٱلَّذِینَ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحۡمَةࣲ مِّنَّا وَقَطَعۡنَا دَابِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۖ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٧٢

But we rescued him and those with him, by mercy from ourselves, and we cut off the hindermost parts of those who said our signs were lies and who were not believers.

fa-anjaynāhu wa-alladhīna maʿahu biraḥmatin minnā waqaṭaʿnā dābira alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā wamā kānū mu'minīn

7:73

وَإِلَىٰ ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمۡ صَـٰلِحࣰاۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۖ قَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡكُم بَیِّنَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةُ ٱللَّهِ لَكُمۡ ءَایَةࣰۖ فَذَرُوهَا تَأۡكُلۡ فِیۤ أَرۡضِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٧٣

Unto Thamud (we sent) their brother Zalih, who said, 'O my people! worship God; ye have no god but Him: there has come to you a manifest sign from your Lord. This she-camel of God's is a sign for you; leave her then to eat in the land of God, and touch her not with evil, or there will overtake you grievous woe

wa-ilā thamūda akhāhum ṣāliḥan qāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu qad jāatkum bayyinatun min rabbikum hādhihi nāqatu l-lahi lakum āyatan fadharūhā takul fī arḍi l-lahi walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābun alīmu

7:74

وَٱذۡكُرُوۤا۟ إِذۡ جَعَلَكُمۡ خُلَفَاۤءَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ عَادࣲ وَبَوَّأَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِن سُهُولِهَا قُصُورࣰا وَتَنۡحِتُونَ ٱلۡجِبَالَ بُیُوتࣰاۖ فَٱذۡكُرُوۤا۟ ءَالَاۤءَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٧٤

Edward Henry Palmer

And remember how he made you vicegerents after 'Ad and established you in the earth, so that ye took for yourselves castles on its plains and hewed out mountains into houses; and remember the benefits of God, and waste not the land, despoiling it.

wa-udh'kurū idh jaʿalakum khulafāa min baʿdi ʿādin wabawwa-akum fī l-arḍi tattakhidhūna min suhūlihā quṣūran watanḥitūna l-jibāla buyūtan fa-udh'kurū ālāa l-lahi walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

7:75

قَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ مِن قَوۡمِهِۦ لِلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتُضۡعِفُوا۟ لِمَنۡ ءَامَنَ مِنۡهُمۡ أَتَعۡلَمُونَ أَنَّ صَـٰلِحࣰا مُّرۡسَلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۚ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا بِمَاۤ أُرۡسِلَ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٧٥

Edward Henry Palmer

Said the chiefs of those who were big with pride from amongst his people to those who were weak,- to those amongst them who believed, 'Do ye know that Zalih is sent from his Lord?' They said, 'We do believe in that with which he is sent.

qāla l-mala-u alladhīna is'takbarū min qawmihi lilladhīna us'tuḍ'ʿifū liman āmana min'hum ataʿlamūna anna ṣāliḥan mur'salun min rabbihi qālū innā bimā ur'sila bihi mu'minūn

7:76

قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوۤا۟ إِنَّا بِٱلَّذِیۤ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٧٦

Said those who were big with pride, 'Verily, in what ye do believe we disbelieve.

qāla alladhīna is'takbarū innā bi-alladhī āmantum bihi kāfirūn

7:77

فَعَقَرُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةَ وَعَتَوۡا۟ عَنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰصَـٰلِحُ ٱئۡتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَاۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٧٧

Edward Henry Palmer

Then they did hamstring the camel, and rebelled against the bidding of their Lord and said, 'O Zalih! bring us what thou didst threaten us with, if thou art of those who are sent.

faʿaqarū l-nāqata waʿataw ʿan amri rabbihim waqālū yāṣāliḥu i'tinā bimā taʿidunā in kunta mina l-mur'salīn

7:78

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ فِی دَارِهِمۡ جَـٰثِمِینَ ۝٧٨

Then the earthquake took them, and in the morning they lay prone in their dwellings

fa-akhadhathumu l-rajfatu fa-aṣbaḥū fī dārihim jāthimīn

7:79

فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنۡهُمۡ وَقَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ لَقَدۡ أَبۡلَغۡتُكُمۡ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّی وَنَصَحۡتُ لَكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُحِبُّونَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِینَ ۝٧٩

Edward Henry Palmer

and he turned away from them and said, 'O my people! I did preach to you the message of my Lord, and I gave you good advice! but ye love not sincere advisers.

fatawallā ʿanhum waqāla yāqawmi laqad ablaghtukum risālata rabbī wanaṣaḥtu lakum walākin lā tuḥibbūna l-nāṣiḥīn

7:80

وَلُوطًا إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦۤ أَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلۡفَـٰحِشَةَ مَا سَبَقَكُم بِهَا مِنۡ أَحَدࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٠

Edward Henry Palmer

And Lot, when he said to his people, 'Do ye approach an abomination which no one in all the world ever anticipated you in

walūṭan idh qāla liqawmihi atatūna l-fāḥishata mā sabaqakum bihā min aḥadin mina l-ʿālamīn

7:81

إِنَّكُمۡ لَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلرِّجَالَ شَهۡوَةࣰ مِّن دُونِ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ مُّسۡرِفُونَ ۝٨١

Edward Henry Palmer

verily, ye approach men with lust rather than women - nay, ye are a people who exceed.

innakum latatūna l-rijāla shahwatan min dūni l-nisāi bal antum qawmun mus'rifūn

7:82

وَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوۤا۟ أَخۡرِجُوهُم مِّن قَرۡیَتِكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُمۡ أُنَاسࣱ یَتَطَهَّرُونَ ۝٨٢

Edward Henry Palmer

But his people's answer only was to say, 'Turn them out of your village, verily, they are a people who pretend to purity.

wamā kāna jawāba qawmihi illā an qālū akhrijūhum min qaryatikum innahum unāsun yataṭahharūn

7:83

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَهُۥ كَانَتۡ مِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝٨٣

Edward Henry Palmer

But we saved him and his people, except his wife, who was of those who lingered

fa-anjaynāhu wa-ahlahu illā im'ra-atahu kānat mina l-ghābirīn

7:84

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٨٤

and we rained down upon them a rain; - see then how was the end of the sinners

wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-muj'rimīn

7:85

وَإِلَىٰ مَدۡیَنَ أَخَاهُمۡ شُعَیۡبࣰاۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۖ قَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡكُم بَیِّنَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ فَأَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَٱلۡمِیزَانَ وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تُفۡسِدُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بَعۡدَ إِصۡلَـٰحِهَاۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨٥

Edward Henry Palmer

And unto Midian did we send their brother Shohaib, who said, 'O my people! serve God, ye have no god save Him. There has come to you a manifest sign from your Lord; then give good weight and measure, and be not niggardly of your gifts to men, and do not evil in the earth after it has been righted. That is better for you if ye are believers

wa-ilā madyana akhāhum shuʿayban qāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu qad jāatkum bayyinatun min rabbikum fa-awfū l-kayla wal-mīzāna walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā tuf'sidū fī l-arḍi baʿda iṣ'lāḥihā dhālikum khayrun lakum in kuntum mu'minīn

7:86

وَلَا تَقۡعُدُوا۟ بِكُلِّ صِرَ ٰطࣲ تُوعِدُونَ وَتَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ بِهِۦ وَتَبۡغُونَهَا عِوَجࣰاۚ وَٱذۡكُرُوۤا۟ إِذۡ كُنتُمۡ قَلِیلࣰا فَكَثَّرَكُمۡۖ وَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٨٦

Edward Henry Palmer

and sit not down in every path, threatening and turning from the path of God those who believe in Him, and craving to make it crooked. Remember when ye were few and He multiplied you; and see what was the end of the evildoers

walā taqʿudū bikulli ṣirāṭin tūʿidūna wataṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi man āmana bihi watabghūnahā ʿiwajan wa-udh'kurū idh kuntum qalīlan fakatharakum wa-unẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-muf'sidīn

7:87

وَإِن كَانَ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنكُمۡ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱلَّذِیۤ أُرۡسِلۡتُ بِهِۦ وَطَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ لَّمۡ یُؤۡمِنُوا۟ فَٱصۡبِرُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ یَحۡكُمَ ٱللَّهُ بَیۡنَنَاۚ وَهُوَ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡحَـٰكِمِینَ ۝٨٧

Edward Henry Palmer

And if there be a party of you who believe in what I am sent with, and a party who believe not, then wait patiently until God judges between us, for He is the best of judges.

wa-in kāna ṭāifatun minkum āmanū bi-alladhī ur'sil'tu bihi waṭāifatun lam yu'minū fa-iṣ'birū ḥattā yaḥkuma l-lahu baynanā wahuwa khayru l-ḥākimīn

7:88

۞ قَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ مِن قَوۡمِهِۦ لَنُخۡرِجَنَّكَ یَـٰشُعَیۡبُ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَكَ مِن قَرۡیَتِنَاۤ أَوۡ لَتَعُودُنَّ فِی مِلَّتِنَاۚ قَالَ أَوَ لَوۡ كُنَّا كَـٰرِهِینَ ۝٨٨

Said the crowd of those who were big with pride amongst His people, 'We will of a surety turn thee out, O Shohaib! and those who believe with thee, from our village; or else thou shalt return unto our faith.' Said he, 'What even if we be averse therefrom

qāla l-mala-u alladhīna is'takbarū min qawmihi lanukh'rijannaka yāshuʿaybu wa-alladhīna āmanū maʿaka min qaryatinā aw lataʿūdunna fī millatinā qāla awalaw kunnā kārihīn

7:89

قَدِ ٱفۡتَرَیۡنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا إِنۡ عُدۡنَا فِی مِلَّتِكُم بَعۡدَ إِذۡ نَجَّىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنۡهَاۚ وَمَا یَكُونُ لَنَاۤ أَن نَّعُودَ فِیهَاۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّنَاۚ وَسِعَ رَبُّنَا كُلَّ شَیۡءٍ عِلۡمًاۚ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلۡنَاۚ رَبَّنَا ٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَ قَوۡمِنَا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَنتَ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡفَـٰتِحِینَ ۝٨٩

Edward Henry Palmer

We shall have devised a lie against God if we return unto your faith, after God has saved us from it; and what should ail us that we should return thereto, unless that God our Lord should please? our Lord embraces everything in His knowledge; - on God do we rely. O our Lord! open between us and between our people in truth, for Thou art the best of those who open.

qadi if'taraynā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban in ʿud'nā fī millatikum baʿda idh najjānā l-lahu min'hā wamā yakūnu lanā an naʿūda fīhā illā an yashāa l-lahu rabbunā wasiʿa rabbunā kulla shayin ʿil'man ʿalā l-lahi tawakkalnā rabbanā if'taḥ baynanā wabayna qawminā bil-ḥaqi wa-anta khayru l-fātiḥīn

7:90

وَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوۡمِهِۦ لَىِٕنِ ٱتَّبَعۡتُمۡ شُعَیۡبًا إِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٩٠

And the chiefs of those who disbelieved amongst his people said, 'If ye follow Shohaib, verily, ye shall be the losers;

waqāla l-mala-u alladhīna kafarū min qawmihi la-ini ittabaʿtum shuʿayban innakum idhan lakhāsirūn

7:91

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ فِی دَارِهِمۡ جَـٰثِمِینَ ۝٩١

then there took them the earthquake, and in the morning they lay in their dwellings prone

fa-akhadhathumu l-rajfatu fa-aṣbaḥū fī dārihim jāthimīn

7:92

ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ شُعَیۡبࣰا كَأَن لَّمۡ یَغۡنَوۡا۟ فِیهَاۚ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ شُعَیۡبࣰا كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٩٢

Edward Henry Palmer

Those who called Shohaib a liar, (were) as though they had not dwelt therein! - Those who called Shohaib a liar, they were the losers then

alladhīna kadhabū shuʿayban ka-an lam yaghnaw fīhā alladhīna kadhabū shuʿayban kānū humu l-khāsirīn

7:93

فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنۡهُمۡ وَقَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ لَقَدۡ أَبۡلَغۡتُكُمۡ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّی وَنَصَحۡتُ لَكُمۡۖ فَكَیۡفَ ءَاسَىٰ عَلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ كَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٩٣

Edward Henry Palmer

And he turned away from them and said, 'O my people! I preached to you the messages of my Lord, and I gave you good advice; how should I be vexed for a people who do misbelieve?

fatawallā ʿanhum waqāla yāqawmi laqad ablaghtukum risālāti rabbī wanaṣaḥtu lakum fakayfa āsā ʿalā qawmin kāfirīn

7:94

وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِی قَرۡیَةࣲ مِّن نَّبِیٍّ إِلَّاۤ أَخَذۡنَاۤ أَهۡلَهَا بِٱلۡبَأۡسَاۤءِ وَٱلضَّرَّاۤءِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَضَّرَّعُونَ ۝٩٤

We have not sent unto a city any prophet except we overtook the people thereof with trouble and distress, that haply they might humble themselves

wamā arsalnā fī qaryatin min nabiyyin illā akhadhnā ahlahā bil-basāi wal-ḍarāi laʿallahum yaḍḍarraʿūn

7:95

ثُمَّ بَدَّلۡنَا مَكَانَ ٱلسَّیِّئَةِ ٱلۡحَسَنَةَ حَتَّىٰ عَفَوا۟ وَّقَالُوا۟ قَدۡ مَسَّ ءَابَاۤءَنَا ٱلضَّرَّاۤءُ وَٱلسَّرَّاۤءُ فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٩٥

Edward Henry Palmer

and then did we give them, in exchange for evil, good, until they increased and said, 'Distress and joy both touched our fathers;' then we overtook them suddenly ere they could perceive.

thumma baddalnā makāna l-sayi-ati l-ḥasanata ḥattā ʿafaw waqālū qad massa ābāanā l-ḍarāu wal-sarāu fa-akhadhnāhum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

7:96

وَلَوۡ أَنَّ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰۤ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوۡا۟ لَفَتَحۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم بَرَكَـٰتࣲ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَـٰكِن كَذَّبُوا۟ فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٩٦

Had the people of the town but believed and feared, we would have opened up for them blessings from the heavens and from the earth; but they said it was a lie, so we overtook them for that which they had earned

walaw anna ahla l-qurā āmanū wa-ittaqaw lafataḥnā ʿalayhim barakātin mina l-samāi wal-arḍi walākin kadhabū fa-akhadhnāhum bimā kānū yaksibūn

7:97

أَفَأَمِنَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡقُرَىٰۤ أَن یَأۡتِیَهُم بَأۡسُنَا بَیَـٰتࣰا وَهُمۡ نَاۤىِٕمُونَ ۝٩٧

Were the people of these cities then secure that our violence would not come on them by night, while they slept

afa-amina ahlu l-qurā an yatiyahum basunā bayātan wahum nāimūn

7:98

أَوَ أَمِنَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡقُرَىٰۤ أَن یَأۡتِیَهُم بَأۡسُنَا ضُحࣰى وَهُمۡ یَلۡعَبُونَ ۝٩٨

were the people of these cities secure that our violence would not come on them in the morning whilst they played

awa-amina ahlu l-qurā an yatiyahum basunā ḍuḥan wahum yalʿabūn

7:99

أَفَأَمِنُوا۟ مَكۡرَ ٱللَّهِۚ فَلَا یَأۡمَنُ مَكۡرَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٩٩

were they secure from the craft of God? none feel secure from the craft of God except a people that shall lose

afa-aminū makra l-lahi falā yamanu makra l-lahi illā l-qawmu l-khāsirūn

7:100

أَوَ لَمۡ یَهۡدِ لِلَّذِینَ یَرِثُونَ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَهۡلِهَاۤ أَن لَّوۡ نَشَاۤءُ أَصَبۡنَـٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمۡۚ وَنَطۡبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝١٠٠

Is it not shown to those who inherit the earth after its (former) people, that, did we please, we would smite them in their sins, and would set a stamp upon their hearts, and then they should not hear

awalam yahdi lilladhīna yarithūna l-arḍa min baʿdi ahlihā an law nashāu aṣabnāhum bidhunūbihim wanaṭbaʿu ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yasmaʿūn

7:101

تِلۡكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّ عَلَیۡكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَاۤىِٕهَاۚ وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِیُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِمَا كَذَّبُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلُۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَطۡبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٠١

These cities, we do relate to thee their stories. There came to them our apostles with manifest signs; but they did not at all believe in what they called a lie before.- Thus doth God set a stamp upon the hearts of those who misbelieve

til'ka l-qurā naquṣṣu ʿalayka min anbāihā walaqad jāathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti famā kānū liyu'minū bimā kadhabū min qablu kadhālika yaṭbaʿu l-lahu ʿalā qulūbi l-kāfirīn

7:102

وَمَا وَجَدۡنَا لِأَكۡثَرِهِم مِّنۡ عَهۡدࣲۖ وَإِن وَجَدۡنَاۤ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝١٠٢

Nor did we find in most of them a covenant; but we did find most of them workers of abomination

wamā wajadnā li-aktharihim min ʿahdin wa-in wajadnā aktharahum lafāsiqīn

7:103

ثُمَّ بَعَثۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِم مُّوسَىٰ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ فَظَلَمُوا۟ بِهَاۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٠٣

Then we raised up after them Moses with our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs; but they dealt unjustly therewith, and see what was the end of the evildoers

thumma baʿathnā min baʿdihim mūsā biāyātinā ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi faẓalamū bihā fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-muf'sidīn

7:104

وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ یَـٰفِرۡعَوۡنُ إِنِّی رَسُولࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٤

Moses said, 'O Pharaoh! verily, I am an apostle from the Lord of the worlds

waqāla mūsā yāfir'ʿawnu innī rasūlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn

7:105

حَقِیقٌ عَلَىٰۤ أَن لَّاۤ أَقُولَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَقَّۚ قَدۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِبَیِّنَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ فَأَرۡسِلۡ مَعِیَ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٠٥

it is not right for me to speak against God aught but the truth. I have come to you with a manifest sign from my Lord; send then the children of Israel with me.

ḥaqīqun ʿalā an lā aqūla ʿalā l-lahi illā l-ḥaqa qad ji'tukum bibayyinatin min rabbikum fa-arsil maʿiya banī is'rāīl

7:106

قَالَ إِن كُنتَ جِئۡتَ بِءَایَةࣲ فَأۡتِ بِهَاۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٠٦

Said he, 'If thou hast come with a sign, then bring it, if thou art of those who speak the truth.

qāla in kunta ji'ta biāyatin fati bihā in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

7:107

فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٠٧

Then he threw his rod down, and lo! it was an obvious snake

fa-alqā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thuʿ'bānun mubīnu

7:108

وَنَزَعَ یَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِیَ بَیۡضَاۤءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝١٠٨

and he drew out his hand, and lo! it was white to the beholders

wanazaʿa yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍāu lilnnāẓirīn

7:109

قَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِن قَوۡمِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝١٠٩

Said the chiefs of Pharaoh's people, 'Verily, this is surely a knowing magician

qāla l-mala-u min qawmi fir'ʿawna inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīmu

7:110

یُرِیدُ أَن یُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُمۡۖ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ ۝١١٠

he desires to turn you out of your land; - what is it then ye bid?

yurīdu an yukh'rijakum min arḍikum famādhā tamurūn

7:111

قَالُوۤا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَأَرۡسِلۡ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝١١١

They said, 'Give him and his brother some hope; and send into the cities to collec

qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-arsil fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

7:112

یَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَـٰحِرٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝١١٢

and bring you every knowing magician.

yatūka bikulli sāḥirin ʿalīmi

7:113

وَجَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ فِرۡعَوۡنَ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝١١٣

And the magician came to Pharaoh and said, 'Is there indeed a reward for us if we are conquerors?

wajāa l-saḥaratu fir'ʿawna qālū inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn

7:114

قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝١١٤

He said, 'Yea! and ye shall be of those who draw nigh unto me.

qāla naʿam wa-innakum lamina l-muqarabīn

7:115

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰمُوسَىٰۤ إِمَّاۤ أَن تُلۡقِیَ وَإِمَّاۤ أَن نَّكُونَ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُلۡقِینَ ۝١١٥

They said, 'O Moses! wilt thou cast down (thy rod) or shall we be (first) to throw?

qālū yāmūsā immā an tul'qiya wa-immā an nakūna naḥnu l-mul'qīn

7:116

قَالَ أَلۡقُوا۟ۖ فَلَمَّاۤ أَلۡقَوۡا۟ سَحَرُوۤا۟ أَعۡیُنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَٱسۡتَرۡهَبُوهُمۡ وَجَاۤءُو بِسِحۡرٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١١٦

Said he, 'Throw down;' and when they threw down, they did enchant the people's eyes, and made them dread, and brought a mighty magic

qāla alqū falammā alqaw saḥarū aʿyuna l-nāsi wa-is'tarhabūhum wajāū bisiḥ'rin ʿaẓīmi

7:117

۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَلۡقِ عَصَاكَۖ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝١١٧

But we inspired Moses (saying), 'Throw down thy rod, and it will gulp down that which they devise;

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an alqi ʿaṣāka fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn

7:118

فَوَقَعَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَبَطَلَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٨

and the truth stood fast, and vain was that which they had done

fawaqaʿa l-ḥaqu wabaṭala mā kānū yaʿmalūn

7:119

فَغُلِبُوا۟ هُنَالِكَ وَٱنقَلَبُوا۟ صَـٰغِرِینَ ۝١١٩

and they were conquered there, and turned back feeling small

faghulibū hunālika wa-inqalabū ṣāghirīn

7:120

وَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝١٢٠

and the magicians threw themselves down adoring

wa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn

7:121

قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢١

Said they, 'We believe in the Lord of the worlds

qālū āmannā birabbi l-ʿālamīn

7:122

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١٢٢

the Lord of Moses and Aaron!

rabbi mūsā wahārūn

7:123

قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَمَكۡرࣱ مَّكَرۡتُمُوهُ فِی ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ لِتُخۡرِجُوا۟ مِنۡهَاۤ أَهۡلَهَاۖ فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٢٣

Edward Henry Palmer

Said Pharaoh, 'Do ye believe in him ere I give you leave? This is craft which ye have devised in the land, to turn its people out therefrom, but soon shall ye know

qāla fir'ʿawnu āmantum bihi qabla an ādhana lakum inna hādhā lamakrun makartumūhu fī l-madīnati litukh'rijū min'hā ahlahā fasawfa taʿlamūn

7:124

لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ ثُمَّ لَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٢٤

Edward Henry Palmer

I will cut off your hands and your feet from opposite sides, then I will crucify you altogether!

la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin thumma la-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn

7:125

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝١٢٥

Edward Henry Palmer

They said, 'Verily, we unto our Lord return

qālū innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn

7:126

وَمَا تَنقِمُ مِنَّاۤ إِلَّاۤ أَنۡ ءَامَنَّا بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا لَمَّا جَاۤءَتۡنَاۚ رَبَّنَاۤ أَفۡرِغۡ عَلَیۡنَا صَبۡرࣰا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسۡلِمِینَ ۝١٢٦

nor dost thou take vengeance on us, save for that we believe in the signs of our Lord, when they come to us. 'O our Lord! pour out upon us patience, and take us to Thyself resigned.

wamā tanqimu minnā illā an āmannā biāyāti rabbinā lammā jāatnā rabbanā afrigh ʿalaynā ṣabran watawaffanā mus'limīn

7:127

وَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِن قَوۡمِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ أَتَذَرُ مُوسَىٰ وَقَوۡمَهُۥ لِیُفۡسِدُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَیَذَرَكَ وَءَالِهَتَكَۚ قَالَ سَنُقَتِّلُ أَبۡنَاۤءَهُمۡ وَنَسۡتَحۡیِۦ نِسَاۤءَهُمۡ وَإِنَّا فَوۡقَهُمۡ قَـٰهِرُونَ ۝١٢٧

And the chiefs of Pharaoh's people said, 'Will ye leave Moses and his people, to do evil in the land, and to leave thee and thy gods?' Said he, 'We will have their sons slain and their women we will let live, for, verily, we are triumphant over them.

waqāla l-mala-u min qawmi fir'ʿawna atadharu mūsā waqawmahu liyuf'sidū fī l-arḍi wayadharaka waālihataka qāla sanuqattilu abnāahum wanastaḥyī nisāahum wa-innā fawqahum qāhirūn

7:128

قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوۡمِهِ ٱسۡتَعِینُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱصۡبِرُوۤا۟ۖ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ لِلَّهِ یُورِثُهَا مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۖ وَٱلۡعَـٰقِبَةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١٢٨

Said Moses unto his people, 'Ask for aid from God and be patient; verily, the earth is God's! He gives it for an inheritance to whom He pleases of His servants, and the future is for those who fear.

qāla mūsā liqawmihi is'taʿīnū bil-lahi wa-iṣ'birū inna l-arḍa lillahi yūrithuhā man yashāu min ʿibādihi wal-ʿāqibatu lil'muttaqīn

7:129

قَالُوۤا۟ أُوذِینَا مِن قَبۡلِ أَن تَأۡتِیَنَا وَمِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جِئۡتَنَاۚ قَالَ عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمۡ أَن یُهۡلِكَ عَدُوَّكُمۡ وَیَسۡتَخۡلِفَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَیَنظُرَ كَیۡفَ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢٩

They said, 'We have been hurt before thou didst come to us, and since thou hast come to us.' Said he, 'It may be that your Lord will destroy your foe, and will make you succeed him in the earth; and He will see how ye act.

qālū ūdhīnā min qabli an tatiyanā wamin baʿdi mā ji'tanā qāla ʿasā rabbukum an yuh'lika ʿaduwwakum wayastakhlifakum fī l-arḍi fayanẓura kayfa taʿmalūn

7:130

وَلَقَدۡ أَخَذۡنَاۤ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِٱلسِّنِینَ وَنَقۡصࣲ مِّنَ ٱلثَّمَرَ ٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَذَّكَّرُونَ ۝١٣٠

We had overtaken Pharaoh's people with the years (of dearth) and scarcity of fruits, that haply they might remember

walaqad akhadhnā āla fir'ʿawna bil-sinīna wanaqṣin mina l-thamarāti laʿallahum yadhakkarūn

7:131

فَإِذَا جَاۤءَتۡهُمُ ٱلۡحَسَنَةُ قَالُوا۟ لَنَا هَـٰذِهِۦۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ سَیِّئَةࣱ یَطَّیَّرُوا۟ بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤۗ أَلَاۤ إِنَّمَا طَـٰۤىِٕرُهُمۡ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣١

but when there came to them a good thing they said, 'This is ours;' and if there befell them an evil, they took the augury from Moses and those with him; - is not their augury only in God's hands? - but most of them know not

fa-idhā jāathumu l-ḥasanatu qālū lanā hādhihi wa-in tuṣib'hum sayyi-atun yaṭṭayyarū bimūsā waman maʿahu alā innamā ṭāiruhum ʿinda l-lahi walākinna aktharahum lā yaʿlamūn

7:132

وَقَالُوا۟ مَهۡمَا تَأۡتِنَا بِهِۦ مِنۡ ءَایَةࣲ لِّتَسۡحَرَنَا بِهَا فَمَا نَحۡنُ لَكَ بِمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٢

Edward Henry Palmer

And they said, 'Whatever thou dost bring us as a sign to enchant us therewith, yet will we not believe in thee.

waqālū mahmā tatinā bihi min āyatin litasḥaranā bihā famā naḥnu laka bimu'minīn

7:133

فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلطُّوفَانَ وَٱلۡجَرَادَ وَٱلۡقُمَّلَ وَٱلضَّفَادِعَ وَٱلدَّمَ ءَایَـٰتࣲ مُّفَصَّلَـٰتࣲ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوۡمࣰا مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٣٣

Then we sent upon them the flood and the locusts and the lice and the frogs and the blood, - signs detailed; but they were big with pride and were a people who did sin

fa-arsalnā ʿalayhimu l-ṭūfāna wal-jarāda wal-qumala wal-ḍafādiʿa wal-dama āyātin mufaṣṣalātin fa-is'takbarū wakānū qawman muj'rimīn

7:134

وَلَمَّا وَقَعَ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلرِّجۡزُ قَالُوا۟ یَـٰمُوسَى ٱدۡعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَۖ لَىِٕن كَشَفۡتَ عَنَّا ٱلرِّجۡزَ لَنُؤۡمِنَنَّ لَكَ وَلَنُرۡسِلَنَّ مَعَكَ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٣٤

And when there fell upon them the plague, they said, 'O Moses! call upon thy Lord for us, as He has covenanted with thee; verily, if thou dost remove the plague from us, we will believe in thee; and we will assuredly send with thee the children of Israel.

walammā waqaʿa ʿalayhimu l-rij'zu qālū yāmūsā ud'ʿu lanā rabbaka bimā ʿahida ʿindaka la-in kashafta ʿannā l-rij'za lanu'minanna laka walanur'silanna maʿaka banī is'rāīl

7:135

فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ ٱلرِّجۡزَ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلٍ هُم بَـٰلِغُوهُ إِذَا هُمۡ یَنكُثُونَ ۝١٣٥

But when we removed from them the plague until the appointed time which they should reach, lo! then they broke their promise

falammā kashafnā ʿanhumu l-rij'za ilā ajalin hum bālighūhu idhā hum yankuthūn

7:136

فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ فَأَغۡرَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡیَمِّ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا غَـٰفِلِینَ ۝١٣٦

But we took vengeance on them, and we drowned them in the sea, for that they said our signs were lies and were careless thereof

fa-intaqamnā min'hum fa-aghraqnāhum fī l-yami bi-annahum kadhabū biāyātinā wakānū ʿanhā ghāfilīn

7:137

وَأَوۡرَثۡنَا ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَانُوا۟ یُسۡتَضۡعَفُونَ مَشَـٰرِقَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَغَـٰرِبَهَا ٱلَّتِی بَـٰرَكۡنَا فِیهَاۖ وَتَمَّتۡ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ عَلَىٰ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ۖ وَدَمَّرۡنَا مَا كَانَ یَصۡنَعُ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَقَوۡمُهُۥ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡرِشُونَ ۝١٣٧

And we gave as an inheritance unto the people who had been weak, the eastern quarters of the earth and the western quarters thereof, which we had blest; and the good word of thy Lord was fulfilled on the children of Israel, for that they were patient; and we destroyed that which Pharaoh and his people had made and that which they had piled

wa-awrathnā l-qawma alladhīna kānū yus'taḍʿafūna mashāriqa l-arḍi wamaghāribahā allatī bāraknā fīhā watammat kalimatu rabbika l-ḥus'nā ʿalā banī is'rāīla bimā ṣabarū wadammarnā mā kāna yaṣnaʿu fir'ʿawnu waqawmuhu wamā kānū yaʿrishūn

7:138

وَجَـٰوَزۡنَا بِبَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ فَأَتَوۡا۟ عَلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ یَعۡكُفُونَ عَلَىٰۤ أَصۡنَامࣲ لَّهُمۡۚ قَالُوا۟ یَـٰمُوسَى ٱجۡعَل لَّنَاۤ إِلَـٰهࣰا كَمَا لَهُمۡ ءَالِهَةࣱۚ قَالَ إِنَّكُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ تَجۡهَلُونَ ۝١٣٨

And with the children of Israel we passed across the sea; and they came unto a people devoted to their idols, and said, 'O Moses! make for us a god as they have gods.' Said he, 'Verily, ye are ignorant people.

wajāwaznā bibanī is'rāīla l-baḥra fa-ataw ʿalā qawmin yaʿkufūna ʿalā aṣnāmin lahum qālū yāmūsā ij'ʿal lanā ilāhan kamā lahum ālihatun qāla innakum qawmun tajhalūn

7:139

إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ مُتَبَّرࣱ مَّا هُمۡ فِیهِ وَبَـٰطِلࣱ مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٣٩

Verily, these - destroyed shall be that which they are given to; and vain is that which they have done

inna hāulāi mutabbarun mā hum fīhi wabāṭilun mā kānū yaʿmalūn

7:140

قَالَ أَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ أَبۡغِیكُمۡ إِلَـٰهࣰا وَهُوَ فَضَّلَكُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٤٠

He said, 'Other than God then do ye crave for a god, when He has preferred you above the worlds?

qāla aghayra l-lahi abghīkum ilāhan wahuwa faḍḍalakum ʿalā l-ʿālamīn

7:141

وَإِذۡ أَنجَیۡنَـٰكُم مِّنۡ ءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ یَسُومُونَكُمۡ سُوۤءَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ یُقَتِّلُونَ أَبۡنَاۤءَكُمۡ وَیَسۡتَحۡیُونَ نِسَاۤءَكُمۡۚ وَفِی ذَ ٰلِكُم بَلَاۤءࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ عَظِیمࣱ ۝١٤١

Edward Henry Palmer

And when we saved you from Pharaoh's people who wrought you evil woe, killing your sons, and letting your women live; and in that was a mighty trial from your Lord

wa-idh anjaynākum min āli fir'ʿawna yasūmūnakum sūa l-ʿadhābi yuqattilūna abnāakum wayastaḥyūna nisāakum wafī dhālikum balāon min rabbikum ʿaẓīmu

7:142

۞ وَوَ ٰعَدۡنَا مُوسَىٰ ثَلَـٰثِینَ لَیۡلَةࣰ وَأَتۡمَمۡنَـٰهَا بِعَشۡرࣲ فَتَمَّ مِیقَـٰتُ رَبِّهِۦۤ أَرۡبَعِینَ لَیۡلَةࣰۚ وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِأَخِیهِ هَـٰرُونَ ٱخۡلُفۡنِی فِی قَوۡمِی وَأَصۡلِحۡ وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ سَبِیلَ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٤٢

And we appointed for Moses thirty nights, and completed them with ten (more), so that the time appointed by his Lord was completed to forty nights. And Moses said unto his brother Aaron, 'Be thou my vicegerent amongst my people, and do what is right, and follow not the path of the evildoers.

wawāʿadnā mūsā thalāthīna laylatan wa-atmamnāhā biʿashrin fatamma mīqātu rabbihi arbaʿīna laylatan waqāla mūsā li-akhīhi hārūna ukh'luf'nī fī qawmī wa-aṣliḥ walā tattabiʿ sabīla l-muf'sidīn

7:143

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ مُوسَىٰ لِمِیقَـٰتِنَا وَكَلَّمَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ قَالَ رَبِّ أَرِنِیۤ أَنظُرۡ إِلَیۡكَۚ قَالَ لَن تَرَىٰنِی وَلَـٰكِنِ ٱنظُرۡ إِلَى ٱلۡجَبَلِ فَإِنِ ٱسۡتَقَرَّ مَكَانَهُۥ فَسَوۡفَ تَرَىٰنِیۚ فَلَمَّا تَجَلَّىٰ رَبُّهُۥ لِلۡجَبَلِ جَعَلَهُۥ دَكࣰّا وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقࣰاۚ فَلَمَّاۤ أَفَاقَ قَالَ سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ تُبۡتُ إِلَیۡكَ وَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٤٣

And when Moses came to our appointment, and his Lord spake unto him, he said, 'O my Lord! show me, - that I may look on thee!' He said, Thou canst not see me; but look upon the mountain, and if it remain steady in its place, thou shalt see me;' but when his Lord appeared unto the mountain He made it dust, and Moses fell down in a swoon! And when he came to himself, he said, 'Celebrated be thy praise! I turn repentant unto Thee, and I am the first of those who are resigned.

walammā jāa mūsā limīqātinā wakallamahu rabbuhu qāla rabbi arinī anẓur ilayka qāla lan tarānī walākini unẓur ilā l-jabali fa-ini is'taqarra makānahu fasawfa tarānī falammā tajallā rabbuhu lil'jabali jaʿalahu dakkan wakharra mūsā ṣaʿiqan falammā afāqa qāla sub'ḥānaka tub'tu ilayka wa-anā awwalu l-mu'minīn

7:144

قَالَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰۤ إِنِّی ٱصۡطَفَیۡتُكَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِرِسَـٰلَـٰتِی وَبِكَلَـٰمِی فَخُذۡ مَاۤ ءَاتَیۡتُكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝١٤٤

Edward Henry Palmer

He said, 'O Moses! verily, I have chosen thee over the people with my messages and my words, take then what I have brought thee, and be of those who thank.

qāla yāmūsā innī iṣ'ṭafaytuka ʿalā l-nāsi birisālātī wabikalāmī fakhudh mā ātaytuka wakun mina l-shākirīn

7:145

وَكَتَبۡنَا لَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡأَلۡوَاحِ مِن كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ مَّوۡعِظَةࣰ وَتَفۡصِیلࣰا لِّكُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ فَخُذۡهَا بِقُوَّةࣲ وَأۡمُرۡ قَوۡمَكَ یَأۡخُذُوا۟ بِأَحۡسَنِهَاۚ سَأُو۟رِیكُمۡ دَارَ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝١٤٥

And we wrote for him upon tablets an admonition concerning everything, and a detailing of everything: 'Take them then with firmness, and bid thy people take them for what is best thereof. I will show you the abode of those who work abominations

wakatabnā lahu fī l-alwāḥi min kulli shayin mawʿiẓatan watafṣīlan likulli shayin fakhudh'hā biquwwatin wamur qawmaka yakhudhū bi-aḥsanihā sa-urīkum dāra l-fāsiqīn

7:146

سَأَصۡرِفُ عَنۡ ءَایَـٰتِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَكَبَّرُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَیۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَإِن یَرَوۡا۟ كُلَّ ءَایَةࣲ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِهَا وَإِن یَرَوۡا۟ سَبِیلَ ٱلرُّشۡدِ لَا یَتَّخِذُوهُ سَبِیلࣰا وَإِن یَرَوۡا۟ سَبِیلَ ٱلۡغَیِّ یَتَّخِذُوهُ سَبِیلࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا غَـٰفِلِینَ ۝١٤٦

Edward Henry Palmer

I will turn from my signs those who are big with pride in the earth without right; and if they see every sign they shall not believe therein, and if they see the path of rectitude they shall not take it for a path; but if they see the path of error they shall take it for a path; - that is because they have said our signs are lies and have been careless of them.

sa-aṣrifu ʿan āyātiya alladhīna yatakabbarūna fī l-arḍi bighayri l-ḥaqi wa-in yaraw kulla āyatin lā yu'minū bihā wa-in yaraw sabīla l-rush'di lā yattakhidhūhu sabīlan wa-in yaraw sabīla l-ghayi yattakhidhūhu sabīlan dhālika bi-annahum kadhabū biāyātinā wakānū ʿanhā ghāfilīn

7:147

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَلِقَاۤءِ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ حَبِطَتۡ أَعۡمَـٰلُهُمۡۚ هَلۡ یُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٤٧

But those who say our signs and the meeting of the last day are lies,-- vain are their works: shall they be rewarded save for that which they have done

wa-alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā waliqāi l-ākhirati ḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum hal yuj'zawna illā mā kānū yaʿmalūn

7:148

وَٱتَّخَذَ قَوۡمُ مُوسَىٰ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ مِنۡ حُلِیِّهِمۡ عِجۡلࣰا جَسَدࣰا لَّهُۥ خُوَارٌۚ أَلَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّهُۥ لَا یُكَلِّمُهُمۡ وَلَا یَهۡدِیهِمۡ سَبِیلًاۘ ٱتَّخَذُوهُ وَكَانُوا۟ ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٤٨

And Moses' people after him took to themselves of their ornaments a corporeal calf that lowed; did they not see that it could not speak with them, nor could it guide them in the path? They took it and they were unjust

wa-ittakhadha qawmu mūsā min baʿdihi min ḥuliyyihim ʿij'lan jasadan lahu khuwārun alam yaraw annahu lā yukallimuhum walā yahdīhim sabīlan ittakhadhūhu wakānū ẓālimīn

7:149

وَلَمَّا سُقِطَ فِیۤ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَرَأَوۡا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ قَدۡ ضَلُّوا۟ قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ یَرۡحَمۡنَا رَبُّنَا وَیَغۡفِرۡ لَنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝١٤٩

but when they bit their hands with fruitless rage and saw that they had gone astray, they said,' Verily, if our Lord have not compassion on us and forgive us we shall surely be of those who lose!

walammā suqiṭa fī aydīhim wara-aw annahum qad ḍallū qālū la-in lam yarḥamnā rabbunā wayaghfir lanā lanakūnanna mina l-khāsirīn

7:150

وَلَمَّا رَجَعَ مُوسَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ غَضۡبَـٰنَ أَسِفࣰا قَالَ بِئۡسَمَا خَلَفۡتُمُونِی مِنۢ بَعۡدِیۤۖ أَعَجِلۡتُمۡ أَمۡرَ رَبِّكُمۡۖ وَأَلۡقَى ٱلۡأَلۡوَاحَ وَأَخَذَ بِرَأۡسِ أَخِیهِ یَجُرُّهُۥۤ إِلَیۡهِۚ قَالَ ٱبۡنَ أُمَّ إِنَّ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱسۡتَضۡعَفُونِی وَكَادُوا۟ یَقۡتُلُونَنِی فَلَا تُشۡمِتۡ بِیَ ٱلۡأَعۡدَاۤءَ وَلَا تَجۡعَلۡنِی مَعَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٥٠

Edward Henry Palmer

And when Moses returned unto his people angry and grieved, he said, 'Evil is it that ye have done after me! Would ye hasten on the bidding of your Lord?' and he threw down the tablets and took his brother by the head to drag him towards him, but he said, 'O son of my mother! verily, the people weakened me and well-nigh killed me; make not then mine enemies glad about me, and put me not with the unjust people.

walammā rajaʿa mūsā ilā qawmihi ghaḍbāna asifan qāla bi'samā khalaftumūnī min baʿdī aʿajil'tum amra rabbikum wa-alqā l-alwāḥa wa-akhadha birasi akhīhi yajurruhu ilayhi qāla ib'na umma inna l-qawma is'taḍʿafūnī wakādū yaqtulūnanī falā tush'mit biya l-aʿdāa walā tajʿalnī maʿa l-qawmi l-ẓālimīn

7:151

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِی وَلِأَخِی وَأَدۡخِلۡنَا فِی رَحۡمَتِكَۖ وَأَنتَ أَرۡحَمُ ٱلرَّ ٰحِمِینَ ۝١٥١

Edward Henry Palmer

He said, 'O Lord! pardon me and my brother, and let us enter into Thy mercy; for Thou art the most merciful of the merciful

qāla rabbi igh'fir lī wali-akhī wa-adkhil'nā fī raḥmatika wa-anta arḥamu l-rāḥimīn

7:152

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلۡعِجۡلَ سَیَنَالُهُمۡ غَضَبࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡ وَذِلَّةࣱ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُفۡتَرِینَ ۝١٥٢

Edward Henry Palmer

Verily, these have taken to themselves a calf; there shall reach them wrath from their Lord, and abasement in the life of this world; for thus do we reward those who forge a lie

inna alladhīna ittakhadhū l-ʿij'la sayanāluhum ghaḍabun min rabbihim wadhillatun fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wakadhālika najzī l-muf'tarīn

7:153

وَٱلَّذِینَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ ثُمَّ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهَا وَءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهَا لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٥٣

Edward Henry Palmer

But those who have done bad works, and then turn again after them and believe,- verily, thy Lord, after that, is forgiving and merciful.

wa-alladhīna ʿamilū l-sayiāti thumma tābū min baʿdihā waāmanū inna rabbaka min baʿdihā laghafūrun raḥīmu

7:154

وَلَمَّا سَكَتَ عَن مُّوسَى ٱلۡغَضَبُ أَخَذَ ٱلۡأَلۡوَاحَۖ وَفِی نُسۡخَتِهَا هُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِرَبِّهِمۡ یَرۡهَبُونَ ۝١٥٤

And when Moses' wrath calmed down he took the tables, in the inscription of which was guidance and mercy for those who dread their Lord

walammā sakata ʿan mūsā l-ghaḍabu akhadha l-alwāḥa wafī nus'khatihā hudan waraḥmatun lilladhīna hum lirabbihim yarhabūn

7:155

وَٱخۡتَارَ مُوسَىٰ قَوۡمَهُۥ سَبۡعِینَ رَجُلࣰا لِّمِیقَـٰتِنَاۖ فَلَمَّاۤ أَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ قَالَ رَبِّ لَوۡ شِئۡتَ أَهۡلَكۡتَهُم مِّن قَبۡلُ وَإِیَّـٰیَۖ أَتُهۡلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلسُّفَهَاۤءُ مِنَّاۤۖ إِنۡ هِیَ إِلَّا فِتۡنَتُكَ تُضِلُّ بِهَا مَن تَشَاۤءُ وَتَهۡدِی مَن تَشَاۤءُۖ أَنتَ وَلِیُّنَا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَاۖ وَأَنتَ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡغَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٥٥

And Moses chose from his people seventy men for our appointment; and when the earthquake took them he said, 'O my Lord! hadst Thou willed, Thou hadst destroyed them before and me. Wilt Thou destroy us for what the fools amongst us have done? This is naught but Thy trial, wherewith Thou dost lead astray whom Thou pleasest and guidest whom Thou pleasest; Thou art our patron! forgive us and have mercy on us, for Thou art the best of those who do forgive

wa-ikh'tāra mūsā qawmahu sabʿīna rajulan limīqātinā falammā akhadhathumu l-rajfatu qāla rabbi law shi'ta ahlaktahum min qablu wa-iyyāya atuh'likunā bimā faʿala l-sufahāu minnā in hiya illā fit'natuka tuḍillu bihā man tashāu watahdī man tashāu anta waliyyunā fa-igh'fir lanā wa-ir'ḥamnā wa-anta khayru l-ghāfirīn

7:156

۞ وَٱكۡتُبۡ لَنَا فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا حَسَنَةࣰ وَفِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ إِنَّا هُدۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَۚ قَالَ عَذَابِیۤ أُصِیبُ بِهِۦ مَنۡ أَشَاۤءُۖ وَرَحۡمَتِی وَسِعَتۡ كُلَّ شَیۡءࣲۚ فَسَأَكۡتُبُهَا لِلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَ وَیُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم بِءَایَـٰتِنَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٥٦

' And write down for us in this world good, and in the future too; verily, we are guided unto Thee.' He said, 'My punishment - with it I fall on whom I will; and my mercy embraceth everything; and I will write it down for those who fear, and who give alms, and those who in our signs believe,

wa-uk'tub lanā fī hādhihi l-dun'yā ḥasanatan wafī l-ākhirati innā hud'nā ilayka qāla ʿadhābī uṣību bihi man ashāu waraḥmatī wasiʿat kulla shayin fasa-aktubuhā lilladhīna yattaqūna wayu'tūna l-zakata wa-alladhīna hum biāyātinā yu'minūn

7:157

ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ ٱلنَّبِیَّ ٱلۡأُمِّیَّ ٱلَّذِی یَجِدُونَهُۥ مَكۡتُوبًا عِندَهُمۡ فِی ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةِ وَٱلۡإِنجِیلِ یَأۡمُرُهُم بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَیَنۡهَىٰهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَیُحِلُّ لَهُمُ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِ وَیُحَرِّمُ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡخَبَـٰۤىِٕثَ وَیَضَعُ عَنۡهُمۡ إِصۡرَهُمۡ وَٱلۡأَغۡلَـٰلَ ٱلَّتِی كَانَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ فَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلنُّورَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُنزِلَ مَعَهُۥۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٧

Edward Henry Palmer

who follow the Apostle - the illiterate prophet, whom they find written down with them in the law and the gospel, bidding them what is reasonable and forbidding them what is wrong, and making lawful for them what is good, and making unlawful evil things; and setting down for them their burdens and the yokes which were upon them; - to those who believe in him and aid him and help him and follow the law which has been sent down with him - they shall be the prosperous.

alladhīna yattabiʿūna l-rasūla l-nabiya l-umiya alladhī yajidūnahu maktūban ʿindahum fī l-tawrāti wal-injīli yamuruhum bil-maʿrūfi wayanhāhum ʿani l-munkari wayuḥillu lahumu l-ṭayibāti wayuḥarrimu ʿalayhimu l-khabāitha wayaḍaʿu ʿanhum iṣ'rahum wal-aghlāla allatī kānat ʿalayhim fa-alladhīna āmanū bihi waʿazzarūhu wanaṣarūhu wa-ittabaʿū l-nūra alladhī unzila maʿahu ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

7:158

قُلۡ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنِّی رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَیۡكُمۡ جَمِیعًا ٱلَّذِی لَهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ یُحۡیِۦ وَیُمِیتُۖ فَءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ٱلنَّبِیِّ ٱلۡأُمِّیِّ ٱلَّذِی یُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَٱتَّبِعُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٥٨

Edward Henry Palmer

Say, 'O ye folk! verily, I am the Apostle of God unto you all' -, of Him whose is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, there is no god but He! He quickens and He kills! believe then in God and His Apostle, the illiterate prophet,- who believes in God and in His words - then follow him that haply ye may be guided

qul yāayyuhā l-nāsu innī rasūlu l-lahi ilaykum jamīʿan alladhī lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi lā ilāha illā huwa yuḥ'yī wayumītu faāminū bil-lahi warasūlihi l-nabiyi l-umiyi alladhī yu'minu bil-lahi wakalimātihi wa-ittabiʿūhu laʿallakum tahtadūn

7:159

وَمِن قَوۡمِ مُوسَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣱ یَهۡدُونَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَبِهِۦ یَعۡدِلُونَ ۝١٥٩

Amongst Moses' people is a nation guided in truth, and thereby act they justly

wamin qawmi mūsā ummatun yahdūna bil-ḥaqi wabihi yaʿdilūn

7:160

وَقَطَّعۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱثۡنَتَیۡ عَشۡرَةَ أَسۡبَاطًا أُمَمࣰاۚ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ إِذِ ٱسۡتَسۡقَىٰهُ قَوۡمُهُۥۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡحَجَرَۖ فَٱنۢبَجَسَتۡ مِنۡهُ ٱثۡنَتَا عَشۡرَةَ عَیۡنࣰاۖ قَدۡ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسࣲ مَّشۡرَبَهُمۡۚ وَظَلَّلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡغَمَـٰمَ وَأَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلۡوَىٰۖ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَیِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُمۡۚ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١٦٠

Edward Henry Palmer

And we cut them up into twelve tribes, each a nation; and we revealed unto Moses, when his people asked him for drink, 'Strike with thy staff the rock!' and there gushed forth from it twelve springs, each folk knew their drinking place. And we overshadowed them with the cloud; and sent down upon them the manna and the quails, 'Eat of the good things we have provided you with!' - Yet they did not wrong us, but it was themselves they wronged

waqaṭṭaʿnāhumu ith'natay ʿashrata asbāṭan umaman wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā idhi is'tasqāhu qawmuhu ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-ḥajara fa-inbajasat min'hu ith'natā ʿashrata ʿaynan qad ʿalima kullu unāsin mashrabahum waẓallalnā ʿalayhimu l-ghamāma wa-anzalnā ʿalayhimu l-mana wal-salwā kulū min ṭayyibāti mā razaqnākum wamā ẓalamūnā walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

7:161

وَإِذۡ قِیلَ لَهُمُ ٱسۡكُنُوا۟ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡقَرۡیَةَ وَكُلُوا۟ مِنۡهَا حَیۡثُ شِئۡتُمۡ وَقُولُوا۟ حِطَّةࣱ وَٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡبَابَ سُجَّدࣰا نَّغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ خَطِیۤءَـٰتِكُمۡۚ سَنَزِیدُ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٦١

Edward Henry Palmer

And when it was said unto them, 'Dwell in this city and eat therefrom as ye will, and say 'hittatun and enter the gate adoring; so will we pardon you your sins; - we will increase those who do well.

wa-idh qīla lahumu us'kunū hādhihi l-qaryata wakulū min'hā ḥaythu shi'tum waqūlū ḥiṭṭatun wa-ud'khulū l-bāba sujjadan naghfir lakum khaṭīātikum sanazīdu l-muḥ'sinīn

7:162

فَبَدَّلَ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡ قَوۡلًا غَیۡرَ ٱلَّذِی قِیلَ لَهُمۡ فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ رِجۡزࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١٦٢

Edward Henry Palmer

But those amongst them who did wrong changed it for another word than which was said to them; and we sent upon them a plague from heaven for that they were unjust

fabaddala alladhīna ẓalamū min'hum qawlan ghayra alladhī qīla lahum fa-arsalnā ʿalayhim rij'zan mina l-samāi bimā kānū yaẓlimūn

7:163

وَسۡءَلۡهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلۡقَرۡیَةِ ٱلَّتِی كَانَتۡ حَاضِرَةَ ٱلۡبَحۡرِ إِذۡ یَعۡدُونَ فِی ٱلسَّبۡتِ إِذۡ تَأۡتِیهِمۡ حِیتَانُهُمۡ یَوۡمَ سَبۡتِهِمۡ شُرَّعࣰا وَیَوۡمَ لَا یَسۡبِتُونَ لَا تَأۡتِیهِمۡۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَبۡلُوهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡسُقُونَ ۝١٦٣

Ask them too about the city which stood by the sea, when they transgressed upon the Sabbath; when their fish came to them on the Sabbath day sailing straight up to them; but on the days when they kept not the Sabbath, they came not to them, thus did we try them for the abominations that they wrought

wasalhum ʿani l-qaryati allatī kānat ḥāḍirata l-baḥri idh yaʿdūna fī l-sabti idh tatīhim ḥītānuhum yawma sabtihim shurraʿan wayawma lā yasbitūna lā tatīhim kadhālika nablūhum bimā kānū yafsuqūn

7:164

وَإِذۡ قَالَتۡ أُمَّةࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوۡمًا ٱللَّهُ مُهۡلِكُهُمۡ أَوۡ مُعَذِّبُهُمۡ عَذَابࣰا شَدِیدࣰاۖ قَالُوا۟ مَعۡذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمۡ وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦٤

And when a nation from amongst them said, 'Why do ye warn a people whom God would destroy, or punish with severe torment?' they said, 'As an excuse to your Lord, that haply they may fear.

wa-idh qālat ummatun min'hum lima taʿiẓūna qawman l-lahu muh'likuhum aw muʿadhibuhum ʿadhāban shadīdan qālū maʿdhiratan ilā rabbikum walaʿallahum yattaqūn

7:165

فَلَمَّا نَسُوا۟ مَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦۤ أَنجَیۡنَا ٱلَّذِینَ یَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلسُّوۤءِ وَأَخَذۡنَا ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ بِعَذَابِۭ بَءِیسِۭ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡسُقُونَ ۝١٦٥

But when they forgot what they had been reminded of, we saved those who forbade evil, but we overtook those who did wrong with punishment; - evil was the abomination that they did

falammā nasū mā dhukkirū bihi anjaynā alladhīna yanhawna ʿani l-sūi wa-akhadhnā alladhīna ẓalamū biʿadhābin baīsin bimā kānū yafsuqūn

7:166

فَلَمَّا عَتَوۡا۟ عَن مَّا نُهُوا۟ عَنۡهُ قُلۡنَا لَهُمۡ كُونُوا۟ قِرَدَةً خَـٰسِءِینَ ۝١٦٦

but when they rebelled against what they were forbidden, we said to them, 'Become ye apes, despised and spurned!

falammā ʿataw ʿan mā nuhū ʿanhu qul'nā lahum kūnū qiradatan khāsiīn

7:167

وَإِذۡ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكَ لَیَبۡعَثَنَّ عَلَیۡهِمۡ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ مَن یَسُومُهُمۡ سُوۤءَ ٱلۡعَذَابِۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَسَرِیعُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٦٧

Edward Henry Palmer

and then thy Lord proclaimed that He would surely send against them till the resurrection day, those who should wreak them evil torment; verily, thy Lord is quick at following up, but, verily, He is forgiving, merciful

wa-idh ta-adhana rabbuka layabʿathanna ʿalayhim ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati man yasūmuhum sūa l-ʿadhābi inna rabbaka lasarīʿu l-ʿiqābi wa-innahu laghafūrun raḥīmu

7:168

وَقَطَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أُمَمࣰاۖ مِّنۡهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ وَمِنۡهُمۡ دُونَ ذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَبَلَوۡنَـٰهُم بِٱلۡحَسَنَـٰتِ وَٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝١٦٨

We cut them up in the earth into nations. Of them are the righteous, and of them are the reverse of that; we have tried them with good things and with bad things; haply they may return

waqaṭṭaʿnāhum fī l-arḍi umaman min'humu l-ṣāliḥūna wamin'hum dūna dhālika wabalawnāhum bil-ḥasanāti wal-sayiāti laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

7:169

فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ خَلۡفࣱ وَرِثُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یَأۡخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ وَیَقُولُونَ سَیُغۡفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن یَأۡتِهِمۡ عَرَضࣱ مِّثۡلُهُۥ یَأۡخُذُوهُۚ أَلَمۡ یُؤۡخَذۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّیثَـٰقُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ أَن لَّا یَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَقَّ وَدَرَسُوا۟ مَا فِیهِۗ وَٱلدَّارُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٦٩

But there succeeded them successors who inherited the Book! They take the goods of this lower world and say, 'It will be forgiven us.' But if the like goods came to them they would take them too! Was there not taken from them a covenant by the Book, that they should not say against God aught but the truth? Yet they study therein! But the abode of the future life is better for those who fear - do ye not then understand

fakhalafa min baʿdihim khalfun warithū l-kitāba yakhudhūna ʿaraḍa hādhā l-adnā wayaqūlūna sayugh'faru lanā wa-in yatihim ʿaraḍun mith'luhu yakhudhūhu alam yu'khadh ʿalayhim mīthāqu l-kitābi an lā yaqūlū ʿalā l-lahi illā l-ḥaqa wadarasū mā fīhi wal-dāru l-ākhiratu khayrun lilladhīna yattaqūna afalā taʿqilūn

7:170

وَٱلَّذِینَ یُمَسِّكُونَ بِٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِنَّا لَا نُضِیعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُصۡلِحِینَ ۝١٧٠

Edward Henry Palmer

But those who hold fast by the Book and are steadfast in prayer - verily, we will not waste the hire of those who do right

wa-alladhīna yumassikūna bil-kitābi wa-aqāmū l-ṣalata innā lā nuḍīʿu ajra l-muṣ'liḥīn

7:171

۞ وَإِذۡ نَتَقۡنَا ٱلۡجَبَلَ فَوۡقَهُمۡ كَأَنَّهُۥ ظُلَّةࣱ وَظَنُّوۤا۟ أَنَّهُۥ وَاقِعُۢ بِهِمۡ خُذُوا۟ مَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰكُم بِقُوَّةࣲ وَٱذۡكُرُوا۟ مَا فِیهِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧١

Edward Henry Palmer

And when we shook the mountain over them, as though it were a shadow, and they thought it would fall upon them (saying), 'Take ye what we have given you with firmness, and remember what is therein; haply ye may fear.

wa-idh nataqnā l-jabala fawqahum ka-annahu ẓullatun waẓannū annahu wāqiʿun bihim khudhū mā ātaynākum biquwwatin wa-udh'kurū mā fīhi laʿallakum tattaqūn

7:172

وَإِذۡ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنۢ بَنِیۤ ءَادَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمۡ ذُرِّیَّتَهُمۡ وَأَشۡهَدَهُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ أَلَسۡتُ بِرَبِّكُمۡۖ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ شَهِدۡنَاۤۚ أَن تَقُولُوا۟ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنۡ هَـٰذَا غَـٰفِلِینَ ۝١٧٢

Edward Henry Palmer

And when thy Lord took from the children of Adam out of their loins their seed, and made them bear witness against themselves, ' Am I not your Lord?' They said, 'Yea! we do bear witness' - lest ye should say on the day of resurrection, 'Verily, for this we did not care;

wa-idh akhadha rabbuka min banī ādama min ẓuhūrihim dhurriyyatahum wa-ashhadahum ʿalā anfusihim alastu birabbikum qālū balā shahid'nā an taqūlū yawma l-qiyāmati innā kunnā ʿan hādhā ghāfilīn

7:173

أَوۡ تَقُولُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَشۡرَكَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا مِن قَبۡلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّیَّةࣰ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡۖ أَفَتُهۡلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ ۝١٧٣

or say, 'Verily, our fathers associated others with God before us, and we were but their seed after them: wilt Thou then destroy us for what vaindoers did?'

aw taqūlū innamā ashraka ābāunā min qablu wakunnā dhurriyyatan min baʿdihim afatuh'likunā bimā faʿala l-mub'ṭilūn

7:174

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝١٧٤

Thus do we detail the signs; haply they may return

wakadhālika nufaṣṣilu l-āyāti walaʿallahum yarjiʿūn

7:175

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ ٱلَّذِیۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فَٱنسَلَخَ مِنۡهَا فَأَتۡبَعَهُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَاوِینَ ۝١٧٥

Edward Henry Palmer

Read to them the declaration of him to whom we brought our signs, and who stepped away therefrom, and Satan followed him, and he was of those who were beguiled

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a alladhī ātaynāhu āyātinā fa-insalakha min'hā fa-atbaʿahu l-shayṭānu fakāna mina l-ghāwīn

7:176

وَلَوۡ شِئۡنَا لَرَفَعۡنَـٰهُ بِهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّهُۥۤ أَخۡلَدَ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُۚ فَمَثَلُهُۥ كَمَثَلِ ٱلۡكَلۡبِ إِن تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَیۡهِ یَلۡهَثۡ أَوۡ تَتۡرُكۡهُ یَلۡهَثۚ ذَّ ٰلِكَ مَثَلُ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۚ فَٱقۡصُصِ ٱلۡقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝١٧٦

Edward Henry Palmer

Had we pleased we would have exalted him thereby, but lie crouched upon the earth and followed his lust, and his likeness was as the likeness of a dog, whom if thou shouldst attack he hangs out his tongue, or if thou should leave him, hangs out his tongue too. That is the likeness of the people who say our signs are lies. Tell them then these tales - haply they may reflect

walaw shi'nā larafaʿnāhu bihā walākinnahu akhlada ilā l-arḍi wa-ittabaʿa hawāhu famathaluhu kamathali l-kalbi in taḥmil ʿalayhi yalhath aw tatruk'hu yalhath dhālika mathalu l-qawmi alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā fa-uq'ṣuṣi l-qaṣaṣa laʿallahum yatafakkarūn

7:177

سَاۤءَ مَثَلًا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَأَنفُسَهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١٧٧

Edward Henry Palmer

Evil is the likeness of a people who say our signs are lies; themselves it is they wrong

sāa mathalan l-qawmu alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā wa-anfusahum kānū yaẓlimūn

7:178

مَن یَهۡدِ ٱللَّهُ فَهُوَ ٱلۡمُهۡتَدِیۖ وَمَن یُضۡلِلۡ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝١٧٨

man yahdi l-lahu fahuwa l-muh'tadī waman yuḍ'lil fa-ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

7:179

وَلَقَدۡ ذَرَأۡنَا لِجَهَنَّمَ كَثِیرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِۖ لَهُمۡ قُلُوبࣱ لَّا یَفۡقَهُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمۡ أَعۡیُنࣱ لَّا یُبۡصِرُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمۡ ءَاذَانࣱ لَّا یَسۡمَعُونَ بِهَاۤۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ كَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ بَلۡ هُمۡ أَضَلُّۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰفِلُونَ ۝١٧٩

Edward Henry Palmer

We have created for hell many of the ginn and of mankind; they have hearts and they discern not therewith; they have eyes and they see not therewith; they have ears and they hear not therewith; they are like cattle, nay, they go more astray! these it is who care not

walaqad dharanā lijahannama kathīran mina l-jini wal-insi lahum qulūbun lā yafqahūna bihā walahum aʿyunun lā yub'ṣirūna bihā walahum ādhānun lā yasmaʿūna bihā ulāika kal-anʿāmi bal hum aḍallu ulāika humu l-ghāfilūn

7:180

وَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡأَسۡمَاۤءُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰ فَٱدۡعُوهُ بِهَاۖ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ یُلۡحِدُونَ فِیۤ أَسۡمَـٰۤىِٕهِۦۚ سَیُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٠

Edward Henry Palmer

But God's are the good names; call on Him then thereby, and leave those who pervert His names; they shall be rewarded for that which they have done

walillahi l-asmāu l-ḥus'nā fa-id'ʿūhu bihā wadharū alladhīna yul'ḥidūna fī asmāihi sayuj'zawna mā kānū yaʿmalūn

7:181

وَمِمَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاۤ أُمَّةࣱ یَهۡدُونَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَبِهِۦ یَعۡدِلُونَ ۝١٨١

Edward Henry Palmer

And of those whom we have created is a nation who are guided in truth and thereby act with equity

wamimman khalaqnā ummatun yahdūna bil-ḥaqi wabihi yaʿdilūn

7:182

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُم مِّنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٨٢

Edward Henry Palmer

but they who say our signs are lies, we will bring them down by degrees from whence they know not

wa-alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā sanastadrijuhum min ḥaythu lā yaʿlamūn

7:183

وَأُمۡلِی لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ كَیۡدِی مَتِینٌ ۝١٨٣

Edward Henry Palmer

I will let them range; - verily, my stratagem is efficacious

wa-um'lī lahum inna kaydī matīnu

7:184

أَوَ لَمۡ یَتَفَكَّرُوا۟ۗ مَا بِصَاحِبِهِم مِّن جِنَّةٍۚ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٨٤

Edward Henry Palmer

Do they not then reflect that their companion is not possessed? he is but an obvious warner

awalam yatafakkarū mā biṣāḥibihim min jinnatin in huwa illā nadhīrun mubīnu

7:185

أَوَ لَمۡ یَنظُرُوا۟ فِی مَلَكُوتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ مِن شَیۡءࣲ وَأَنۡ عَسَىٰۤ أَن یَكُونَ قَدِ ٱقۡتَرَبَ أَجَلُهُمۡۖ فَبِأَیِّ حَدِیثِۭ بَعۡدَهُۥ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٨٥

Edward Henry Palmer

Do they not behold the kingdoms of the heavens and of the earth, and what things God has created, and (see that), it may be, their time is already drawing nigh? in what relation then will they believe

awalam yanẓurū fī malakūti l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā khalaqa l-lahu min shayin wa-an ʿasā an yakūna qadi iq'taraba ajaluhum fabi-ayyi ḥadīthin baʿdahu yu'minūn

7:186

مَن یُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَلَا هَادِیَ لَهُۥۚ وَیَذَرُهُمۡ فِی طُغۡیَـٰنِهِمۡ یَعۡمَهُونَ ۝١٨٦

Edward Henry Palmer

He whom God leads astray there is no guide for him! He leaves them in their rebellion, blindly wandering on

man yuḍ'lili l-lahu falā hādiya lahu wayadharuhum fī ṭugh'yānihim yaʿmahūn

7:187

یَسۡءَلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَیَّانَ مُرۡسَىٰهَاۖ قُلۡ إِنَّمَا عِلۡمُهَا عِندَ رَبِّیۖ لَا یُجَلِّیهَا لِوَقۡتِهَاۤ إِلَّا هُوَۚ ثَقُلَتۡ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ لَا تَأۡتِیكُمۡ إِلَّا بَغۡتَةࣰۗ یَسۡءَلُونَكَ كَأَنَّكَ حَفِیٌّ عَنۡهَاۖ قُلۡ إِنَّمَا عِلۡمُهَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٨٧

Edward Henry Palmer

They will ask you about the Hour, for what time it is fixed? - say, 'The knowledge thereof is only with my Lord; none shall manifest it at its time but He; it is heavy in the heavens and the earth, it will not come to you save on a sudden.' They will ask as though thou wert privy to it, say, 'The knowledge thereof is only with God,' - but most folk do not know

yasalūnaka ʿani l-sāʿati ayyāna mur'sāhā qul innamā ʿil'muhā ʿinda rabbī lā yujallīhā liwaqtihā illā huwa thaqulat fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi lā tatīkum illā baghtatan yasalūnaka ka-annaka ḥafiyyun ʿanhā qul innamā ʿil'muhā ʿinda l-lahi walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn

7:188

قُل لَّاۤ أَمۡلِكُ لِنَفۡسِی نَفۡعࣰا وَلَا ضَرًّا إِلَّا مَا شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۚ وَلَوۡ كُنتُ أَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبَ لَٱسۡتَكۡثَرۡتُ مِنَ ٱلۡخَیۡرِ وَمَا مَسَّنِیَ ٱلسُّوۤءُۚ إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ وَبَشِیرࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٨٨

Edward Henry Palmer

Say, 'I cannot control profit or harm for myself, save what God will. If I knew the unseen I should surely have much that is good, nor would evil touch me; I am but a warner and a herald of good tidings unto a people who believe.

qul lā amliku linafsī nafʿan walā ḍarran illā mā shāa l-lahu walaw kuntu aʿlamu l-ghayba la-is'takthartu mina l-khayri wamā massaniya l-sūu in anā illā nadhīrun wabashīrun liqawmin yu'minūn

7:189

۞ هُوَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفۡسࣲ وَ ٰحِدَةࣲ وَجَعَلَ مِنۡهَا زَوۡجَهَا لِیَسۡكُنَ إِلَیۡهَاۖ فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّىٰهَا حَمَلَتۡ حَمۡلًا خَفِیفࣰا فَمَرَّتۡ بِهِۦۖ فَلَمَّاۤ أَثۡقَلَت دَّعَوَا ٱللَّهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَىِٕنۡ ءَاتَیۡتَنَا صَـٰلِحࣰا لَّنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِینَ ۝١٨٩

Edward Henry Palmer

He it is who created you from one soul, and made therefrom its mate to dwell therewith; and when he covered her she bore a light burden and went about therewith; but when it grew heavy they called on God, Lord of them both, 'Surely if thou givest us a rightly-shaped child we shall of a surety be of those who thank.

huwa alladhī khalaqakum min nafsin wāḥidatin wajaʿala min'hā zawjahā liyaskuna ilayhā falammā taghashāhā ḥamalat ḥamlan khafīfan famarrat bihi falammā athqalat daʿawā l-laha rabbahumā la-in ātaytanā ṣāliḥan lanakūnanna mina l-shākirīn

7:190

فَلَمَّاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُمَا صَـٰلِحࣰا جَعَلَا لَهُۥ شُرَكَاۤءَ فِیمَاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُمَاۚ فَتَعَـٰلَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝١٩٠

Edward Henry Palmer

And when He gave them both a rightly-shaped child they joined partners with Him for that which He had given them, but exalted be God above that which they associate with Him

falammā ātāhumā ṣāliḥan jaʿalā lahu shurakāa fīmā ātāhumā fataʿālā l-lahu ʿammā yush'rikūn

7:191

أَیُشۡرِكُونَ مَا لَا یَخۡلُقُ شَیۡءࣰا وَهُمۡ یُخۡلَقُونَ ۝١٩١

Edward Henry Palmer

Will they associate with Him those who cannot create aught, but are themselves created

ayush'rikūna mā lā yakhluqu shayan wahum yukh'laqūn

7:192

وَلَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ لَهُمۡ نَصۡرࣰا وَلَاۤ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَنصُرُونَ ۝١٩٢

which have no power to help them, and cannot even help themselves

walā yastaṭīʿūna lahum naṣran walā anfusahum yanṣurūn

7:193

وَإِن تَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ لَا یَتَّبِعُوكُمۡۚ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أَدَعَوۡتُمُوهُمۡ أَمۡ أَنتُمۡ صَـٰمِتُونَ ۝١٩٣

Edward Henry Palmer

But if ye call them unto guidance they will not follow you. It is the same to them if Thou dost call them or if Thou dost hold thy tongue

wa-in tadʿūhum ilā l-hudā lā yattabiʿūkum sawāon ʿalaykum adaʿawtumūhum am antum ṣāmitūn

7:194

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ عِبَادٌ أَمۡثَالُكُمۡۖ فَٱدۡعُوهُمۡ فَلۡیَسۡتَجِیبُوا۟ لَكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٩٤

Edward Henry Palmer

Those whom ye call on other than God are servants like yourselves. Call on them then, and let them answer you, if so be ye tell the truth

inna alladhīna tadʿūna min dūni l-lahi ʿibādun amthālukum fa-id'ʿūhum falyastajībū lakum in kuntum ṣādiqīn

7:195

أَلَهُمۡ أَرۡجُلࣱ یَمۡشُونَ بِهَاۤۖ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ أَیۡدࣲ یَبۡطِشُونَ بِهَاۤۖ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ أَعۡیُنࣱ یُبۡصِرُونَ بِهَاۤۖ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ ءَاذَانࣱ یَسۡمَعُونَ بِهَاۗ قُلِ ٱدۡعُوا۟ شُرَكَاۤءَكُمۡ ثُمَّ كِیدُونِ فَلَا تُنظِرُونِ ۝١٩٥

Edward Henry Palmer

Have they feet to walk with? or have they hands to hold with? or have they eyes to see with? or have they ears to hear with? Call upon your partners; then plot against me, and do not wait

alahum arjulun yamshūna bihā am lahum aydin yabṭishūna bihā am lahum aʿyunun yub'ṣirūna bihā am lahum ādhānun yasmaʿūna bihā quli id'ʿū shurakāakum thumma kīdūni falā tunẓirūn

7:196

إِنَّ وَلِـِّۧیَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی نَزَّلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَۖ وَهُوَ یَتَوَلَّى ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٩٦

Edward Henry Palmer

Verily, my patron is God, who hath sent down the Book, and He is the patron of the righteous

inna waliyyiya l-lahu alladhī nazzala l-kitāba wahuwa yatawallā l-ṣāliḥīn

7:197

وَٱلَّذِینَ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ لَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ نَصۡرَكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَنصُرُونَ ۝١٩٧

Edward Henry Palmer

But those whom ye call on beside Him cannot help you, nor can they even help themselves

wa-alladhīna tadʿūna min dūnihi lā yastaṭīʿūna naṣrakum walā anfusahum yanṣurūn

7:198

وَإِن تَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ لَا یَسۡمَعُوا۟ۖ وَتَرَىٰهُمۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَیۡكَ وَهُمۡ لَا یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٩٨

Edward Henry Palmer

But if ye call them unto the guidance they will not hear, thou mayest see them looking towards thee, yet they do not see

wa-in tadʿūhum ilā l-hudā lā yasmaʿū watarāhum yanẓurūna ilayka wahum lā yub'ṣirūn

7:199

خُذِ ٱلۡعَفۡوَ وَأۡمُرۡ بِٱلۡعُرۡفِ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِینَ ۝١٩٩

Take to pardon, and order what is kind, and shun the ignorant

khudhi l-ʿafwa wamur bil-ʿur'fi wa-aʿriḍ ʿani l-jāhilīn

7:200

وَإِمَّا یَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ نَزۡغࣱ فَٱسۡتَعِذۡ بِٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّهُۥ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمٌ ۝٢٠٠

Edward Henry Palmer

and if an incitement from the devil incites you, then seek refuge in God: verily, He both hears and knows

wa-immā yanzaghannaka mina l-shayṭāni nazghun fa-is'taʿidh bil-lahi innahu samīʿun ʿalīmu

7:201

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ إِذَا مَسَّهُمۡ طَـٰۤىِٕفࣱ مِّنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ تَذَكَّرُوا۟ فَإِذَا هُم مُّبۡصِرُونَ ۝٢٠١

Edward Henry Palmer

Verily, those who fear God, if a wraith from the devil touch, mention Him, and lo! they see

inna alladhīna ittaqaw idhā massahum ṭāifun mina l-shayṭāni tadhakkarū fa-idhā hum mub'ṣirūn

7:202

وَإِخۡوَ ٰنُهُمۡ یَمُدُّونَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡغَیِّ ثُمَّ لَا یُقۡصِرُونَ ۝٢٠٢

And their brethren he shall increase in error, then they shall not desist

wa-ikh'wānuhum yamuddūnahum fī l-ghayi thumma lā yuq'ṣirūn

7:203

وَإِذَا لَمۡ تَأۡتِهِم بِءَایَةࣲ قَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَا ٱجۡتَبَیۡتَهَاۚ قُلۡ إِنَّمَاۤ أَتَّبِعُ مَا یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیَّ مِن رَّبِّیۚ هَـٰذَا بَصَاۤىِٕرُ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَهُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٢٠٣

Edward Henry Palmer

Shouldst Thou not bring them a sign they say, 'Hast Thou not yet made choice of one?' Say, 'I only follow what is inspired to me by my Lord. These are perceptions from my Lord, and a guidance and a mercy to a people who believe.

wa-idhā lam tatihim biāyatin qālū lawlā ij'tabaytahā qul innamā attabiʿu mā yūḥā ilayya min rabbī hādhā baṣāiru min rabbikum wahudan waraḥmatun liqawmin yu'minūn

7:204

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ فَٱسۡتَمِعُوا۟ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُوا۟ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ ۝٢٠٤

And when the Qur'an is read, then listen thereto and keep silence; haply ye may obtain mercy

wa-idhā quri-a l-qur'ānu fa-is'tamiʿū lahu wa-anṣitū laʿallakum tur'ḥamūn

7:205

وَٱذۡكُر رَّبَّكَ فِی نَفۡسِكَ تَضَرُّعࣰا وَخِیفَةࣰ وَدُونَ ٱلۡجَهۡرِ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ بِٱلۡغُدُوِّ وَٱلۡءَاصَالِ وَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡغَـٰفِلِینَ ۝٢٠٥

Edward Henry Palmer

And remember thy Lord within thyself humbly and with fear, not openly in words, in the morning and in the evening; and be not of those who do not care

wa-udh'kur rabbaka fī nafsika taḍarruʿan wakhīfatan wadūna l-jahri mina l-qawli bil-ghuduwi wal-āṣāli walā takun mina l-ghāfilīn

7:206

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لَا یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِهِۦ وَیُسَبِّحُونَهُۥ وَلَهُۥ یَ̅سۡ̅جُ̅دُ̅و̅نَ̅ ۝٢٠٦ ۩

Verily, they who are with my Lord are not too big with pride for His service, but they do celebrate His praise, and Him they do adore

inna alladhīna ʿinda rabbika lā yastakbirūna ʿan ʿibādatihi wayusabbiḥūnahu walahu yasjudūn
