1 Truth of the Resurrection
75:1 ›
۞ لَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ ۝١
Aisha Bewley
No! I swear by the Day of Rising!
lā uq'simu biyawmi l-qiyāmat
75:2 ›
وَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلنَّفۡسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ ۝٢
Aisha Bewley
No! I swear by the self-reproaching self.
walā uq'simu bil-nafsi l-lawāmat
75:3 ›
أَیَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجۡمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ ۝٣
Aisha Bewley
Does man imagine We will not reassemble his bones?
ayaḥsabu l-insānu allan najmaʿa ʿiẓāmah
75:4 ›
بَلَىٰ قَـٰدِرِینَ عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّسَوِّیَ بَنَانَهُۥ ۝٤
Aisha Bewley
On the contrary! We are well able to reshape his fingers.
balā qādirīna ʿalā an nusawwiya banānah
75:5 ›
بَلۡ یُرِیدُ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ لِیَفۡجُرَ أَمَامَهُۥ ۝٥
Aisha Bewley
Yet man still wants to deny what is ahead of him,
bal yurīdu l-insānu liyafjura amāmah
75:6 ›
یَسۡءَلُ أَیَّانَ یَوۡمُ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ ۝٦
Aisha Bewley
asking, ´So when is the Day of Rising?´
yasalu ayyāna yawmu l-qiyāmat
75:7 ›
فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ ۝٧
Aisha Bewley
But when the eyesight is dazzled,
fa-idhā bariqa l-baṣar
75:8 ›
وَخَسَفَ ٱلۡقَمَرُ ۝٨
Aisha Bewley
and the moon is eclipsed,
wakhasafa l-qamar
75:9 ›
وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ ۝٩
Aisha Bewley
and the sun and moon are fused together,
wajumiʿa l-shamsu wal-qamar
75:10 ›
یَقُولُ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ أَیۡنَ ٱلۡمَفَرُّ ۝١٠
Aisha Bewley
on that Day man will say, ´Where can I run?´
yaqūlu l-insānu yawma-idhin ayna l-mafar
75:11 ›
كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ ۝١١
Aisha Bewley
No indeed! There will be no safe place.
kallā lā wazar
75:12 ›
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقَرُّ ۝١٢
Aisha Bewley
That Day the only resting place will be your Lord.
ilā rabbika yawma-idhin l-mus'taqar
75:13 ›
یُنَبَّؤُا۟ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ یَوۡمَىِٕذِۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ ۝١٣
Aisha Bewley
That Day man will be told what he did and failed to do.
yunabba-u l-insānu yawma-idhin bimā qaddama wa-akhar
75:14 ›
بَلِ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦ بَصِیرَةࣱ ۝١٤
Aisha Bewley
In fact, man will be clear proof against himself
bali l-insānu ʿalā nafsihi baṣīratu
75:15 ›
وَلَوۡ أَلۡقَىٰ مَعَاذِیرَهُۥ ۝١٥
Aisha Bewley
in spite of any excuses he might offer.
walaw alqā maʿādhīrah
75:16 ›
لَا تُحَرِّكۡ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعۡجَلَ بِهِۦۤ ۝١٦
Aisha Bewley
Do not move your tongue trying to hasten it.
lā tuḥarrik bihi lisānaka litaʿjala bih
75:17 ›
إِنَّ عَلَیۡنَا جَمۡعَهُۥ وَقُرۡءَانَهُۥ ۝١٧
Aisha Bewley
Its collection and recitation are Our affair.
inna ʿalaynā jamʿahu waqur'ānah
75:18 ›
فَإِذَا قَرَأۡنَـٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعۡ قُرۡءَانَهُۥ ۝١٨
Aisha Bewley
So when We recite it, follow its recitation.
fa-idhā qaranāhu fa-ittabiʿ qur'ānah
75:19 ›
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَیۡنَا بَیَانَهُۥ ۝١٩
Aisha Bewley
Then its explanation is Our concern.
thumma inna ʿalaynā bayānah
75:20 ›
كَلَّا بَلۡ تُحِبُّونَ ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ ۝٢٠
Aisha Bewley
No indeed! But you love this fleeting world
kallā bal tuḥibbūna l-ʿājilat
75:21 ›
وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ ۝٢١
Aisha Bewley
and you disregard the Next World.
watadharūna l-ākhirat
75:22 ›
وُجُوهࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ نَّاضِرَةٌ ۝٢٢
Aisha Bewley
Faces that Day will be radiant,
wujūhun yawma-idhin nāḍiratu
75:23 ›
إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةࣱ ۝٢٣
Aisha Bewley
gazing at their Lord.
ilā rabbihā nāẓiratu
75:24 ›
وَوُجُوهࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذِۭ بَاسِرَةࣱ ۝٢٤
Aisha Bewley
And faces that Day will be glowering,
wawujūhun yawma-idhin bāsiratu
75:25 ›
تَظُنُّ أَن یُفۡعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةࣱ ۝٢٥
Aisha Bewley
realising that a back-breaking blow has fallen.
taẓunnu an yuf'ʿala bihā fāqiratu
75:26 ›
كَلَّاۤ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِیَ ۝٢٦
Aisha Bewley
No indeed! When it reaches the gullet
kallā idhā balaghati l-tarāqiy
75:27 ›
وَقِیلَ مَنۡۜ رَاقࣲ ۝٢٧
Aisha Bewley
and he hears the words, ´Who can heal him now?´
waqīla man rāqi
75:28 ›
وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡفِرَاقُ ۝٢٨
Aisha Bewley
and he knows it is indeed the final parting,
waẓanna annahu l-firāq
75:29 ›
وَٱلۡتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ ۝٢٩
Aisha Bewley
and one leg is entwined with the other:
wal-tafati l-sāqu bil-sāq
75:30 ›
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ ٱلۡمَسَاقُ ۝٣٠
Aisha Bewley
that Day he will be driven to your Lord.
ilā rabbika yawma-idhin l-masāq
2 The Dead Rise
75:31 ›
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ ۝٣١
Aisha Bewley
He neither affirmed the truth nor did he do salat,
falā ṣaddaqa walā ṣall
75:32 ›
وَلَـٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ۝٣٢
Aisha Bewley
but rather denied the truth and turned away.
walākin kadhaba watawall
75:33 ›
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰۤ أَهۡلِهِۦ یَتَمَطَّىٰۤ ۝٣٣
Aisha Bewley
and then went off to his family, swaggering.
thumma dhahaba ilā ahlihi yatamaṭṭ
75:34 ›
أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰ ۝٣٤
Aisha Bewley
It is coming closer to you and closer.
awlā laka fa-awl
75:35 ›
ثُمَّ أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰۤ ۝٣٥
Aisha Bewley
Then closer to you and closer still.
thumma awlā laka fa-awl
75:36 ›
أَیَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ أَن یُتۡرَكَ سُدًى ۝٣٦
Aisha Bewley
Does man reckon he will be left to go on unchecked?
ayaḥsabu l-insānu an yut'raka suda
75:37 ›
أَلَمۡ یَكُ نُطۡفَةࣰ مِّن مَّنِیࣲّ یُمۡنَىٰ ۝٣٧
Aisha Bewley
Was he not a drop of ejaculated sperm,
alam yaku nuṭ'fatan min maniyyin yum'n
75:38 ›
ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةࣰ فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ ۝٣٨
Aisha Bewley
then a blood-clot which He created and shaped,
thumma kāna ʿalaqatan fakhalaqa fasaww
75:39 ›
فَجَعَلَ مِنۡهُ ٱلزَّوۡجَیۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰۤ ۝٣٩

making from it both sexes, male and female?
fajaʿala min'hu l-zawjayni l-dhakara wal-unth
75:40 ›
أَلَیۡسَ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِقَـٰدِرٍ عَلَىٰۤ أَن یُحۡـِۧیَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ ۝٤٠
Aisha Bewley
Is He who does this not able to bring the dead to life?
alaysa dhālika biqādirin ʿalā an yuḥ'yiya l-mawt
