1 The Daybreak

وَالْفَجْرِ

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ

by the 10 nights (first 10 days of the month of Dhul-Hijja),

Walayalin AAashrin

وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ

by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah),

WaalshshafAAi waalwatri

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ

and by the night when it departs!

Waallayli itha yasri

هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ

Are there not in them (above oaths) sufficient proofs for the people of understanding?

Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

Have you (O Muhammad) not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad (people)?

Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ

(Tall residents of) Iram with lofty pillars,

Irama thati alAAimadi

الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ

the like of which were not created like them in the land.

Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albiladi

وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ

With Thamud (people), who cut out rocks in the valley (to make residences)?

Wathamooda allatheena jaboo alssakhra bialwadi

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ

With Pharaoh who had the stakes?

WafirAAawna thee al-awtadi

الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ

They all transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,

Allatheena taghaw fee albiladi

فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ

and made much mischief in it.

Faaktharoo feeha alfasada

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ

So your Lord poured on them different kinds of punishment.

Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ

Surely, your Lord is ever watchful (over them).

Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi

فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ

As for people, when their Lord tries them and gives them honor and bounties, they say: “Our Lord has honored us.”

Faamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani

وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ

But when He tries them through restricting their means of life, then they say: “Our Lord has humiliated us!”

Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani

كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ

Nay! But you did not treat the orphans with kindness and generosity,

Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema

وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ

nor did you encourage each other in feeding the poor!

Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni

وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا

You devour inheritance (of the weak) with greed,

Wata/kuloona altturatha aklan lamman

وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا

and you love wealth with much love!

Watuhibboona almala hubban jamman

كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا

Nay! When the earth will be grounded to exceeding grinding (powder),

Kalla itha dukkati al-ardu dakkan dakkan

وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا

your Lord will come with the angels standing in rows,

Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan

وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

hell will be brought near (in sight) that Day. On that Day people will remember (their deeds), but how the remembrance will avail them?

Wajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannama yawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waanna lahu alththikra

يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي

One will say: “Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for my life?”

Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ

On that Day, none will punish anymore except His punishment,

Fayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ

and none can bind anyone like His binding.

Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun

يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ

(It will be said to the pious): “O you the one in satisfaction!

Ya ayyatuha alnnafsu almutma-innatu

ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً

Come back to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing (to Him).

IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan

فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي

Then you enter among My servants,

Faodkhulee fee AAibadee

وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي

and you enter My Paradise!”

Waodkhulee jannatee
