89:1 ›
وَالْفَجْرِ
Hamid S. Aziz
I swear by (or call to witness) the daw
Waalfajri
89:2 ›
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
Hamid S. Aziz
And by the nights twice five (of pilgrimage)
Walayalin AAashrin
89:3 ›
وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ
Hamid S. Aziz
And the even and the odd
WaalshshafAAi waalwatri
89:4 ›
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ
Hamid S. Aziz
And the night when it passes on
Waallayli itha yasri
89:5 ›
هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ
Hamid S. Aziz
Is there not in these a lesson (evidence or admonition) for a man of understanding
Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin
89:6 ›
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
Hamid S. Aziz
Have you not seen how your Lord did with the people of A´ad
Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin
89:7 ›
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ
Hamid S. Aziz
With the city of Iram of the lofty pillars
Irama thati alAAimadi
89:8 ›
الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ
Hamid S. Aziz
The like of which has not been created in all the land
Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albiladi
89:9 ›
وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ
Hamid S. Aziz
And with the people of Thamud when they hewed the great stones in the valley
Wathamooda allatheena jaboo alssakhra bialwadi
89:10 ›
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ
Hamid S. Aziz
And with Pharaoh, Lord of the stakes
WafirAAawna thee al-awtadi
89:11 ›
الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ
Hamid S. Aziz
All these were outrageous in the land
Allatheena taghaw fee albiladi
89:12 ›
فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ
Hamid S. Aziz
And did multiply wickedness therein
Faaktharoo feeha alfasada
89:13 ›
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
Hamid S. Aziz
Therefore, your Lord poured out upon them the scourge of diverse torments
Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin
89:14 ›
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ
Hamid S. Aziz
Verily, your Lord is ever watchful
Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi
89:15 ›
فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ
Hamid S. Aziz
Now as for man, whenever his Lord tries him and honours him and grants him favour, then he says, "My Lord has honoured me"
Faamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani
89:16 ›
وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ
Hamid S. Aziz
But whenever he tries him and restricts his subsistence, then he says, "My Lord despises me!"
Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani
89:17 ›
كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ
Hamid S. Aziz
Nay, nay! But you do not honour the orphan
Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema
89:18 ›
وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
Hamid S. Aziz
Nor do you urge each other to feed the poor
Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni
89:19 ›
وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا
Hamid S. Aziz
And you devour the inheritance (of the weak) with greed
Wata/kuloona altturatha aklan lamman
89:20 ›
وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا
Hamid S. Aziz
And you love wealth with an abounding love
Watuhibboona almala hubban jamman
89:21 ›
كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا
Hamid S. Aziz
Nay, when the earth is crushed to pieces
Kalla itha dukkati al-ardu dakkan dakkan
89:22 ›
وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا
Hamid S. Aziz
And your Lord comes with the angels, rank on rank
Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan
89:23 ›
وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ
Hamid S. Aziz
And Hell is brought near on that Day, on that Day shall man remember! But how shall the remembrance profit him
Wajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannama yawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waanna lahu alththikra
89:24 ›
يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي
Hamid S. Aziz
He will say, "Would that I had sent something forward for my life!"
Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee
89:25 ›
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ
Hamid S. Aziz
But on that Day none shall punish as He punishes
Fayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun
89:26 ›
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ
Hamid S. Aziz
And none shall be bound with bonds like his
Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun
89:27 ›
يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ
Hamid S. Aziz
But O, you soul in peace and fulfilment
Ya ayyatuha alnnafsu almutma-innatu
89:28 ›
ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً
Hamid S. Aziz
Return unto your Lord, well pleased and well pleasing unto Him
IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan
89:29 ›
فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي
Hamid S. Aziz
Enter you amongst My servants
Faodkhulee fee AAibadee
89:30 ›
وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي
Hamid S. Aziz
Enter you My Garden (Paradise)
Waodkhulee jannatee
