وَالْفَجْرِ
Muhammad Asad
CONSIDER the daybrea
Waalfajri
89:2 ›
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
Muhammad Asad
and the ten nights
Walayalin AAashrin
89:3 ›
وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ
Muhammad Asad
Consider the multiple and the One
WaalshshafAAi waalwatri
89:4 ›
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ
Muhammad Asad
Consider the night as it runs its course
Waallayli itha yasri
89:5 ›
هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ
Muhammad Asad
Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth
Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin
89:6 ›
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
Muhammad Asad
ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] ‘Ad
Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin
89:7 ›
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ
Muhammad Asad
[the people of] Iram the many-pillared
Irama thati alAAimadi
89:8 ›
الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ
Muhammad Asad
the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? –
Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albiladi
89:9 ›
وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ
Muhammad Asad
and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? –
Wathamooda allatheena jaboo alssakhra bialwadi
89:10 ›
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ
Muhammad Asad
and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles
WafirAAawna thee al-awtadi
89:11 ›
الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ
Muhammad Asad
[It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands
Allatheena taghaw fee albiladi
89:12 ›
فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ
Muhammad Asad
and brought about great corruption therein
Faaktharoo feeha alfasada
89:13 ›
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
Muhammad Asad
and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering
Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin
89:14 ›
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ
Muhammad Asad
for, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch
Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi
89:15 ›
فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ
Muhammad Asad
BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"
Faamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani
89:16 ›
وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ
Muhammad Asad
whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!"
Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani
89:17 ›
كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ
Muhammad Asad
But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan
Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema
89:18 ›
وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
Muhammad Asad
and you do not urge one another to feed the needy
Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni
89:19 ›
وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا
Muhammad Asad
and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed
Wata/kuloona altturatha aklan lamman
89:20 ›
وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا
Muhammad Asad
and you love wealth with boundless love
Watuhibboona almala hubban jamman
89:21 ›
كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا
Muhammad Asad
Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing
Kalla itha dukkati al-ardu dakkan dakkan
89:22 ›
وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا
Muhammad Asad
and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank
Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan
89:23 ›
وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ
Muhammad Asad
And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him
Wajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannama yawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waanna lahu alththikra
89:24 ›
يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي
Muhammad Asad
He will say, "Oh, would that I had. provided beforehand for my life [to come]!"
Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee
89:25 ›
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ
Muhammad Asad
For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day
Fayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun
89:26 ›
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ
Muhammad Asad
and none can bind with bonds like His
Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun
89:27 ›
يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ
Muhammad Asad
[But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace
Ya ayyatuha alnnafsu almutma-innatu
89:28 ›
ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً
Muhammad Asad
Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]
IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan
89:29 ›
فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي
Muhammad Asad
enter, then, together with My [other true] servants –
Faodkhulee fee AAibadee
89:30 ›
وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي
Muhammad Asad
yea, enter thou My paradise!"
Waodkhulee jannatee
