1 The Daybreak

وَالْفَجْرِ

Hereby God swears by the dawn

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ

and by ten [important] nights [in Islam ( the first ten nights of Zul- Hadj or the last ten nights of Ramadan).]

Walayalin AAashrin

وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ

and by even and the odd [it may refer to the exactness of mathematics or to the he contrast]

WaalshshafAAi waalwatri

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ

and by the night when it turns into the day

Waallayli itha yasri

هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ

Indeed in all these oaths there are subjects of thought for the thinkers

Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

Do you know how your Lord dealt with the nation of Ad [an ancient tribe who refused to submit themselves to the will of God and were accordingly dealt with]

Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ

The residents of the city of Eram…

Irama thati alAAimadi

الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ

… who were living in such beautiful houses that nobody had built anything like it before

Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albiladi

وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ

And the nation of Thamud whose people had built their houses inside the rocky mountain

Wathamooda allatheena jaboo alssakhra bialwadi

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ

And the mighty Pharaoh who…

WafirAAawna thee al-awtadi

الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ

…. was such a tyrant in governing his land

Allatheena taghaw fee albiladi

فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ

They were merciless tyrants

Faaktharoo feeha alfasada

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ

So your Lord punished them in earth with a portion of punishment which they will receive in the Hell

Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ

Your Lord did that in order to remind mankind that He is watching

Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi

فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ

When man is being tried in wealth [to see how he behaves], he considers it as a God’s reward

Faamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani

وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ

When man is being tried in poverty [to see how he handles the situation], he considers it as a God’s punishment

Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani

كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ

How awful of you people who…

Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema

وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ

… treat the orphan badly,…

Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni

وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا

… do not care about the hungry one, cheat each other from the inheritance and…

Wata/kuloona altturatha aklan lamman

وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا

… love the wealth exceedingly

Watuhibboona almala hubban jamman

كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا

Be mindful of a day that earth explodes with a quake and you will meet your Lord…

Kalla itha dukkati al-ardu dakkan dakkan

وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا

… being accompanied by the angles

Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan

وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

You will then be mindful when you see the Hell being shown to you

Wajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannama yawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waanna lahu alththikra

يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي

Then man will be sorry that he has not sent any good deed as a preparation for his life after death

Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ

God’s punishment (passed to the guilty one) on that day, is not comparable with any punishment that man has ever suffered with

Fayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ

Man is never taken to account as he will be taken to account by God on that day

Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun

يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ

The righteous one, on the contrary, will be offered a heavenly peace

Ya ayyatuha alnnafsu almutma-innatu

ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً

He will be said: “Come back to your Lord; He is pleased with you and you will be pleased with Him.”

IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan

فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي

You deserve to be knighted as My servant;…

Faodkhulee fee AAibadee

وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي

… enter into the Heaven and enjoy it

Waodkhulee jannatee
