1 The Daybreak

وَالْفَجْرِ

By the daybreak,

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ

and Ten Nights,

Walayalin AAashrin

وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ

and the Even and the Odd,

WaalshshafAAi waalwatri

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ

and the night when it passes:

Waallayli itha yasri

هَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِي حِجْرٍ

is there in these an oath to those of understanding?

Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ

الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ

وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ

WafirAAawna thee al-awtadi

الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ

فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ

Faaktharoo feeha alfasada

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ

Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ

Your Lord is truly on the watch:

Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi

فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ

and as for humanity, when their Lord tests them by honoring and pampering them, they say, "My Lord has honored me!"

Faamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani

وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ

And when their Lord tests them by restricting their livelihood, then they say, "My Lord has abased me!"

Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani

كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ

Oh, no! But you do not honor orphans

Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema

وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ

or encourage each other to feed the poor;

Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni

وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا

and you eat up inheritance with consuming gluttony,

Wata/kuloona altturatha aklan lamman

وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا

and yo.1 love wealth with exceeding love.

Watuhibboona almala hubban jamman

كَلَّا إِذَا دُكَّتِ الْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا

Oh, no! When the earth is pulverized, pounded to dust,

Kalla itha dukkati al-ardu dakkan dakkan

وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا

and your Lord comes, and the angels, row after row, rank upon rank,

Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan

وَجِيءَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

and on that day will hell be set forth: on that day humankind will remember, but how will that reminder avail them?

Wajee-a yawma-ithin bijahannama yawma-ithin yatathakkaru al-insanu waanna lahu alththikra

يَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِي

They will say, "Oh, would that I had prepared for my life!"

Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُ أَحَدٌ

For on that day no one can inflict the punishment of God,

Fayawma-ithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ

and no one can tie the bonds of God.

Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun

يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ

O soul, in satisfied peace,

Ya ayyatuha alnnafsu almutma-innatu

ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً

return to your Lord, pleased and accepted.

IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan

فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي

Join the company of My servants,

Faodkhulee fee AAibadee

وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي

and enter into My Garden.

Waodkhulee jannatee
