مَا ٱلۡحَاۤقَّةُ ۝٢

mā l-ḥāqat
69:3 ›
وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡحَاۤقَّةُ ۝٣

and what should make thee know what the Infallible is
wamā adrāka mā l-ḥāqat
69:4 ›
كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ وَعَادُۢ بِٱلۡقَارِعَةِ ۝٤

Thamud and 'Ad called the Striking Day a lie
kadhabat thamūdu waʿādun bil-qāriʿat
69:5 ›
فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهۡلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِیَةِ ۝٥

but as for Thamud they perished by the shock
fa-ammā thamūdu fa-uh'likū bil-ṭāghiyat
69:6 ›
وَأَمَّا عَادࣱ فَأُهۡلِكُوا۟ بِرِیحࣲ صَرۡصَرٍ عَاتِیَةࣲ ۝٦

and as for 'Ad they perished with the violent cold blast of wind
wa-ammā ʿādun fa-uh'likū birīḥin ṣarṣarin ʿātiyati
69:7 ›
سَخَّرَهَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ سَبۡعَ لَیَالࣲ وَثَمَـٰنِیَةَ أَیَّامٍ حُسُومࣰاۖ فَتَرَى ٱلۡقَوۡمَ فِیهَا صَرۡعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمۡ أَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلٍ خَاوِیَةࣲ ۝٧

which He subjected against them for seven nights and eight days consecutively
sakharahā ʿalayhim sabʿa layālin wathamāniyata ayyāmin ḥusūman fatarā l-qawma fīhā ṣarʿā ka-annahum aʿjāzu nakhlin khāwiyati
69:8 ›
فَهَلۡ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّنۢ بَاقِیَةࣲ ۝٨

Thou mightest see the people therein prostrate as though they were palm stumps thrown down, and canst thou see any of them left
fahal tarā lahum min bāqiyati
69:9 ›
وَجَاۤءَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَن قَبۡلَهُۥ وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَـٰتُ بِٱلۡخَاطِئَةِ ۝٩

And Pharaoh and those before him of the overturned Cities committed sins
wajāa fir'ʿawnu waman qablahu wal-mu'tafikātu bil-khāṭi-at
69:10 ›
فَعَصَوۡا۟ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ أَخۡذَةࣰ رَّابِیَةً ۝١٠

and they rebelled against the apostle of their Lord, and He seized them with an excessive punishment
faʿaṣaw rasūla rabbihim fa-akhadhahum akhdhatan rābiyata
69:11 ›
إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلۡمَاۤءُ حَمَلۡنَـٰكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡجَارِیَةِ ۝١١

Verily, we, when the water surged, bore you on it in a sailing ship
innā lammā ṭaghā l-māu ḥamalnākum fī l-jāriyat
69:12 ›
لِنَجۡعَلَهَا لَكُمۡ تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَتَعِیَهَاۤ أُذُنࣱ وَ ٰعِیَةࣱ ۝١٢

to make it a memorial for you, and that the retentive ear might hold it
linajʿalahā lakum tadhkiratan wataʿiyahā udhunun wāʿiyatu
69:13 ›
فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِی ٱلصُّورِ نَفۡخَةࣱ وَ ٰحِدَةࣱ ۝١٣

And when the trumpet shall be blown with one blast
fa-idhā nufikha fī l-ṣūri nafkhatun wāḥidatu
69:14 ›
وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ ۝١٤

and the earth shall be borne away, and the mountains too, and both be crushed with one crushing
waḥumilati l-arḍu wal-jibālu fadukkatā dakkatan wāḥidata
69:15 ›
فَیَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ۝١٥

on that day shall the inevitable happen
fayawma-idhin waqaʿati l-wāqiʿat
69:16 ›
وَٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ فَهِیَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ وَاهِیَةࣱ ۝١٦

and the heaven on that day shall be cleft asunder, for on that day shall it wane
wa-inshaqqati l-samāu fahiya yawma-idhin wāhiyatu
69:17 ›
وَٱلۡمَلَكُ عَلَىٰۤ أَرۡجَاۤىِٕهَاۚ وَیَحۡمِلُ عَرۡشَ رَبِّكَ فَوۡقَهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ ثَمَـٰنِیَةࣱ ۝١٧

and the angels upon the sides thereof; and above them on that day shall eight bear the throne of thy Lord
wal-malaku ʿalā arjāihā wayaḥmilu ʿarsha rabbika fawqahum yawma-idhin thamāniyatu
69:18 ›
یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ تُعۡرَضُونَ لَا تَخۡفَىٰ مِنكُمۡ خَافِیَةࣱ ۝١٨

On the day when ye shall be set forth no hidden thing of yours shall be concealed
yawma-idhin tuʿ'raḍūna lā takhfā minkum khāfiyatu
69:19 ›
فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِیَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِیَمِینِهِۦ فَیَقُولُ هَاۤؤُمُ ٱقۡرَءُوا۟ كِتَـٰبِیَهۡ ۝١٩

And as for him who is given his book in his right hand, he shall say, 'Here! take and read my book
fa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu biyamīnihi fayaqūlu hāumu iq'raū kitābiya
69:20 ›
إِنِّی ظَنَنتُ أَنِّی مُلَـٰقٍ حِسَابِیَهۡ ۝٢٠

Verily, I thought that I should meet my reckoning;
innī ẓanantu annī mulāqin ḥisābiya
69:21 ›
فَهُوَ فِی عِیشَةࣲ رَّاضِیَةࣲ ۝٢١

and he shall be in a pleasing life
fahuwa fī ʿīshatin rāḍiyati
69:22 ›
فِی جَنَّةٍ عَالِیَةࣲ ۝٢٢

in a lofty garden
fī jannatin ʿāliyati
69:23 ›
قُطُوفُهَا دَانِیَةࣱ ۝٢٣

whose fruits are nigh to cull
quṭūfuhā dāniyatu
69:24 ›
كُلُوا۟ وَٱشۡرَبُوا۟ هَنِیۤءَۢا بِمَاۤ أَسۡلَفۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَیَّامِ ٱلۡخَالِیَةِ ۝٢٤

'Eat ye and drink with good digestion, for what ye did aforetime in the days that have gone by!
kulū wa-ish'rabū hanīan bimā aslaftum fī l-ayāmi l-khāliyat
69:25 ›
وَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِیَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَیَقُولُ یَـٰلَیۡتَنِی لَمۡ أُوتَ كِتَـٰبِیَهۡ ۝٢٥

But as for him who is given his book in his left hand he shall say, 'O, would that I had not received my book
wa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu bishimālihi fayaqūlu yālaytanī lam ūta kitābiya
69:26 ›
وَلَمۡ أَدۡرِ مَا حِسَابِیَهۡ ۝٢٦

I did not know what my account would be
walam adri mā ḥisābiya
69:27 ›
یَـٰلَیۡتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلۡقَاضِیَةَ ۝٢٧

O, would that it had been an end of me
yālaytahā kānati l-qāḍiyat
69:28 ›
مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنِّی مَالِیَهۡۜ ۝٢٨

my wealth availed me not
mā aghnā ʿannī māliya
69:29 ›
هَلَكَ عَنِّی سُلۡطَـٰنِیَهۡ ۝٢٩

my authority has perished from me!
halaka ʿannī sul'ṭāniya
69:30 ›
خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ ۝٣٠

'Take him and fetter him
khudhūhu faghullūh
69:31 ›
ثُمَّ ٱلۡجَحِیمَ صَلُّوهُ ۝٣١

then in hell broil him
thumma l-jaḥīma ṣallūh
69:32 ›
ثُمَّ فِی سِلۡسِلَةࣲ ذَرۡعُهَا سَبۡعُونَ ذِرَاعࣰا فَٱسۡلُكُوهُ ۝٣٢

then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits force him
thumma fī sil'silatin dharʿuhā sabʿūna dhirāʿan fa-us'lukūh
69:33 ›
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٣٣

verily, he believed not in the mighty God
innahu kāna lā yu'minu bil-lahi l-ʿaẓīm
69:34 ›
وَلَا یَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِینِ ۝٣٤

nor was he particular to feed the poor
walā yaḥuḍḍu ʿalā ṭaʿāmi l-mis'kīn
69:35 ›
فَلَیۡسَ لَهُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ هَـٰهُنَا حَمِیمࣱ ۝٣٥

therefore he has not here today any warm friend
falaysa lahu l-yawma hāhunā ḥamīmu
69:36 ›
وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنۡ غِسۡلِینࣲ ۝٣٦

nor any food except foul ichor
walā ṭaʿāmun illā min ghis'līni
69:37 ›
لَّا یَأۡكُلُهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡخَـٰطِءُونَ ۝٣٧

which none save sinners shall eat!
lā yakuluhu illā l-khāṭiūn
2 False Allegations refuted
69:38 ›
فَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٣٨

I need not swear by what ye se
falā uq'simu bimā tub'ṣirūn
69:39 ›
وَمَا لَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٣٩

or what ye do not see
wamā lā tub'ṣirūn
69:40 ›
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٤٠
Edward Henry Palmer
verily, it is the speech of a noble apostle
innahu laqawlu rasūlin karīmi
69:41 ›
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَاعِرࣲۚ قَلِیلࣰا مَّا تُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٤١
Edward Henry Palmer
and it is not the speech of a poet:- little is it ye believe
wamā huwa biqawli shāʿirin qalīlan mā tu'minūn
69:42 ›
وَلَا بِقَوۡلِ كَاهِنࣲۚ قَلِیلࣰا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٤٢

And it is not the speech of a soothsayer,- little is it that ye mind!
walā biqawli kāhinin qalīlan mā tadhakkarūn
69:43 ›
تَنزِیلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٣

a revelation from the Lord of the worlds
tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn
69:44 ›
وَلَوۡ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَیۡنَا بَعۡضَ ٱلۡأَقَاوِیلِ ۝٤٤

Why if he had invented against us any sayings
walaw taqawwala ʿalaynā baʿḍa l-aqāwīl
69:45 ›
لَأَخَذۡنَا مِنۡهُ بِٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٤٥

we would have seized him by the right hand
la-akhadhnā min'hu bil-yamīn
69:46 ›
ثُمَّ لَقَطَعۡنَا مِنۡهُ ٱلۡوَتِینَ ۝٤٦

then we would have cut his jugular vein
thumma laqaṭaʿnā min'hu l-watīn
69:47 ›
فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنۡ أَحَدٍ عَنۡهُ حَـٰجِزِینَ ۝٤٧

nor could any one of you have kept us off from him
famā minkum min aḥadin ʿanhu ḥājizīn
69:48 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَذۡكِرَةࣱ لِّلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٤٨

Verily, it is a memorial to the pious
wa-innahu latadhkiratun lil'muttaqīn
69:49 ›
وَإِنَّا لَنَعۡلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِینَ ۝٤٩

and, verily, we know that there are amongst you those who say it is a lie
wa-innā lanaʿlamu anna minkum mukadhibīn
69:50 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَسۡرَةٌ عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٥٠

and, verily, it is a source of sighing to the misbelievers
wa-innahu laḥasratun ʿalā l-kāfirīn
69:51 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَقُّ ٱلۡیَقِینِ ۝٥١

and, verily, it is certain truth
wa-innahu laḥaqqu l-yaqīn
69:52 ›
فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٥٢

Therefore celebrate the name of thy mighty Lord
fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm
