1 He Frowned

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

He, -the Messenger- frowned and turned away

AAabasa watawalla

أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ

When the blind man came in (and interrupted his exhortation to some of the Qurashite nobilities who tried to suppress his mission and stood in his way)

An jaahu al-aAAma

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ

"You Muhammad do not know; he -the blind man- may well hug faith to his innermost thoughts and to his innermost being and commend his secret feelings to Allah

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

Or he might ponder what he learns and profit by it

Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

But he who is rich, with abundant means at command

Amma mani istaghna

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ

You give him attention, hoping he would submit

Faanta lahu tasadda

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

Yet you are absolved if his disbelief in Allah does not remit

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ

But he who comes to you seeking authoritative counsel and admonition

Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ

With heart full of reverence and mindful of submission

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

you are unmindful of him and you give him little attention."

Faanta AAanhu talahha

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

No indeed, but let this incident be an admonition

Kalla innaha tathkiratun

فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ

and he who wishes, may keep Allah in mind and imprint in his heart His Glorious Quran which conduces to piety and to contritio

Faman shaa thakarahu

فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ

A Quran recorded in Books, honoured and highly esteemed

Fee suhufin mukarramatin

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ

Exalted, absolute and pure honourably deemed

MarfooAAatin mutahharatin

بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ

Recorded by Scribes emblematic of trust

Bi-aydee safaratin

كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ

Honourable, pious and just

Kiramin bararatin

قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ

Accursed be man, how he fights against his own good the best he can

Qutila al-insanu ma akfarahu

مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ

From what primordium did Allah create him

Min ayyi shay-in khalaqahu

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ

From a seed in fluid emitted did He create him and animate, and his dimensions and his life span, his provisions and his lot did He determine, and his intellect did He actuate.

Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ

Then He guided him to the path of safety and righteousness and his course did He facilitat

Thumma alssabeela yassarahu

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ

Then He occasioned his death and in the grave did He deposit and inanimate

Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ

Then when He wills, He shall resurrect him and animate

Thumma itha shaa ansharahu

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ

But no, he never fulfilled what Allah has commanded and ordained

Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu

فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ

Let man take a look at his food

Falyanthuri al-insanu ila taAAamihi

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا

We poured down rain-water in quantities which stream and flow

Anna sababna almaa sabban

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا

Then We split the earth and break up the soil to allow water in and vegetations to grow

Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqan

فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا

Therein We grew edible grain

Faanbatna feeha habban

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا

Grapes and herbage

WaAAinaban waqadban

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا

Olive trees and palm-dates

Wazaytoonan wanakhlan

وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا

Gardens of perennial and other purposeful trees

Wahada-iqa ghulban

وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

and fruits and fodder

Wafakihatan waabban

مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ

Sustenance for you and for your cattle

MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum

فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ

Then when the deafening uproarious eventful Event* comes abou

Fa-itha jaati alssakhkhatu

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

Man shall then flee from his own brother

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ

From his mother and his father

Waommihi waabeehi

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ

and from his wife and his children

Wasahibatihi wabaneehi

لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ

For each of them then, there is enough trouble of his own

Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithin sha/nun yughneehi

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ

Some faces will then be beaming

Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfiratun

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ

Smiling and rejoicing in all seeming

Dahikatun mustabshiratun

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ

Other faces will be coated with gloom

Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayha ghabaratun

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

A painful depressing darkness they shall assume

Tarhaquha qataratun

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ

These are the wicked infidels who impudently defied admonition

Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu
