1 He Frowned

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

Mohammad frowned and turned away

AAabasa watawalla

أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ

When the blind man came to him

An jaahu al-aAAma

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ

How would you know that by attending to him and answering his questions he would not turn into a …

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

…righteous person and what was your criterion to ignore him

Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

As to the rich one that you…

Amma mani istaghna

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ

gave your preference in discussion, there is no blame on you,…

Faanta lahu tasadda

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

if he does not choose the right way

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ

You ignored the one who…

Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ

came eagerly to you…

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

the who is mindful of his Lord

Faanta AAanhu talahha

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

This is an admonition for…

Kalla innaha tathkiratun

فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ

… the one who accept it gladly

Faman shaa thakarahu

فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ

This admonition is…

Fee suhufin mukarramatin

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ

hereby presented in this…

MarfooAAatin mutahharatin

بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ

honorable and…

Bi-aydee safaratin

كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ

glorified book presented…through righteous angles

Kiramin bararatin

قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ

How pity of the ungrateful man

Qutila al-insanu ma akfarahu

مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ

Does this proud creature not think what his Lord created him from

Min ayyi shay-in khalaqahu

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ

What is he proud of? He is being created of a tiny sperm [that thousands of them hardly fill the top of a needle!]

Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ

To such an insignificance creature God has favored the growth

Thumma alssabeela yassarahu

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ

Then God takes his soul and put him in the grave

Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ

The same One Who created him out of nothing may resurrect him anytime pleases Him

Thumma itha shaa ansharahu

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ

What a pity that man has not fulfilled what his Lord has commanded him

Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu

فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ

Let man look at his very food that sustains his life [it does not grow up in the super market]

Falyanthuri al-insanu ila taAAamihi

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا

God pour downs lots of water from…

Anna sababna almaa sabban

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا

the sky, then He splits the earth and…

Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqan

فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا

makes the corn to grow

Faanbatna feeha habban

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا

And grapes and nutritious plants

WaAAinaban waqadban

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا

And olives and dates

Wazaytoonan wanakhlan

وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا

And dense gardens

Wahada-iqa ghulban

وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

And fruits and herbs

Wafakihatan waabban

مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ

As a provision for man and his cattle [which provides meat for man]

MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum

فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ

Know that when the big blow is ordered to take over the universe

Fa-itha jaati alssakhkhatu

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

Man will leave his brother

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ

And his mother and his father

Waommihi waabeehi

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ

And his wife and his children

Wasahibatihi wabaneehi

لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ

Each individual has enough of his own to be concerned with that does not care about the others

Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithin sha/nun yughneehi

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ

Some faces in that day will be bright,…

Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfiratun

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ

… laughing and rejoicing

Dahikatun mustabshiratun

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ

Other faces on that day will be…

Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayha ghabaratun

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

.. covered with misery, overwhelmed with sadness

Tarhaquha qataratun

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ

Such will be the end of wicked disbelievers

Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu
