80:1 ›
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
Munir Mezyed
He (-Muhammad-) frowned and turned away
AAabasa watawalla
80:2 ›
أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ
Munir Mezyed
As there came to him the blind man, (interrupting).
An jaahu al-aAAma
80:3 ›
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ
Munir Mezyed
How would you know? Probably he came you in order to be purified,
Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka
80:4 ›
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ
Munir Mezyed
Or to receive admonition that might benefit him.
Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra
80:5 ›
أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ
Munir Mezyed
But the one who considers himself free from need,
Amma mani istaghna
80:6 ›
فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ
Munir Mezyed
You gave him too much attention.
Faanta lahu tasadda
80:7 ›
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
Munir Mezyed
Yet it is not your concern if he will not be purified.
Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka
80:8 ›
وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ
Munir Mezyed
But, as for the one who came to you, seeking for spiritual insight,
Waamma man jaaka yasAAa
80:9 ›
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ
Munir Mezyed
Being afraid (of the consequences of his disbelief),
Wahuwa yakhsha
80:10 ›
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
Munir Mezyed
You ignored him.
Faanta AAanhu talahha
80:11 ›
كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ
Munir Mezyed
Nay! It is indeed an admonishment.
Kalla innaha tathkiratun
80:12 ›
فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ
Munir Mezyed
Consequently, whoever wills will pay attention to it.
Faman shaa thakarahu
80:13 ›
فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ
Munir Mezyed
It is (mentioned) in Honorable Books,
Fee suhufin mukarramatin
80:14 ›
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ
Munir Mezyed
Exalted and purified,
MarfooAAatin mutahharatin
80:15 ›
بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ
Munir Mezyed
In the hands of scribes (the angels),
Bi-aydee safaratin
80:16 ›
كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ
Munir Mezyed
Noble and obedient.
Kiramin bararatin
80:17 ›
قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ
Munir Mezyed
Man seeks his own destruction. How ‘impious’ he is!
Qutila al-insanu ma akfarahu
80:18 ›
مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ
Munir Mezyed
Of what substance did He create him?
Min ayyi shay-in khalaqahu
80:19 ›
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ
Munir Mezyed
Of a sperm-drop, He created him. Then He proportioned him.
Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu
80:20 ›
ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ
Munir Mezyed
Then He made the path easy for him.
Thumma alssabeela yassarahu
80:21 ›
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ
Munir Mezyed
Then He caused him to die and made a tomb for him.
Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu
80:22 ›
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ
Munir Mezyed
Consequently, when He wills, He will bring him again to life.
Thumma itha shaa ansharahu
80:23 ›
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ
Munir Mezyed
Nay! Man has not fulfilled what Allâh has commanded him.
Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu
80:24 ›
فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ
Munir Mezyed
Let man look at his food!
Falyanthuri al-insanu ila taAAamihi
80:25 ›
أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا
Munir Mezyed
We poured down water in abundance,
Anna sababna almaa sabban
80:26 ›
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا
Munir Mezyed
And then We split the earth in rifts,
Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqan
80:27 ›
فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا
Munir Mezyed
Consequently, We caused to grow therein grain,
Faanbatna feeha habban
80:28 ›
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا
Munir Mezyed
Grapes and green fodder,
WaAAinaban waqadban
80:29 ›
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا
Munir Mezyed
Olive and date-palms,
Wazaytoonan wanakhlan
80:30 ›
وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا
Munir Mezyed
Gardens of thick foliage,
Wahada-iqa ghulban
80:31 ›
وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا
Munir Mezyed
Fruits and grass,
Wafakihatan waabban
80:32 ›
مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ
Munir Mezyed
A provision for you and your cattle.
MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum
80:33 ›
فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ
Munir Mezyed
But when the ‘Deafening Blast’ comes to pass,
Fa-itha jaati alssakhkhatu
80:34 ›
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ
Munir Mezyed
On the day when a man runs away from his brother,
Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi
80:35 ›
وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ
Munir Mezyed
From his mother and his father,
Waommihi waabeehi
80:36 ›
وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ
Munir Mezyed
From his wife and his children,
Wasahibatihi wabaneehi
80:37 ›
لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ
Munir Mezyed
Since each one of them, that ‘day’, will have enough trouble of his own, which makes him careless of others.
Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithin sha/nun yughneehi
80:38 ›
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ
Munir Mezyed
Some faces, on that ‘day’, will be so bright,
Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfiratun
80:39 ›
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ
Munir Mezyed
Laughing and rejoicing and over the joyful news
Dahikatun mustabshiratun
80:40 ›
وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ
Munir Mezyed
While the other faces, on that ‘Day’, will have dust upon them
Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayha ghabaratun
80:41 ›
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
Munir Mezyed
Being completely darkened by dust.
Tarhaquha qataratun
80:42 ›
أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ
Munir Mezyed
Those are the ‘impious’ flagrantly wicked
Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu
