1 He Frowned

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

He frowned and turned away!

AAabasa watawalla

أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ

When the blind man approached him!

An jaahu al-aAAma

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ

How do you know, perhaps he might be purified!

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

Or perhaps he is going to contemplate on the reminder and that remembrance is going to benefit him!

Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

As for he who thinks himself without need...

Amma mani istaghna

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ

You give attention to him!

Faanta lahu tasadda

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

But what is it to you if he is not purified!

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ

Whereas the one who comes to you with a thirst for knowledge!

Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

Yet you do not give your attention to him!

Faanta AAanhu talahha

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

No, indeed, it (the Quran) is a reminder.

Kalla innaha tathkiratun

فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ

So whoever wills shall remember it!

Faman shaa thakarahu

فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ

It is recorded in honored records,

Fee suhufin mukarramatin

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ

And exalted and completely purified!

MarfooAAatin mutahharatin

بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ

By the hands (forces) of scribes (recording angels).

Bi-aydee safaratin

كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ

Noble (dignified, supreme) and dutiful,

Kiramin bararatin

قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ

Woe to man! May he die (and see the reality)! How he denies!

Qutila al-insanu ma akfarahu

مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ

From what did He create him?

Min ayyi shay-in khalaqahu

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ

He made him from a sperm-drop, and formed his nature!

Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ

Then eased his way.

Thumma alssabeela yassarahu

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ

Then killed and placed him in the grave (body).

Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ

Then, when He wills, He will resurrect him from his grave (body).

Thumma itha shaa ansharahu

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ

But no! He has not yet fulfilled what He commanded him (he has not duly fulfilled his vicegerency).

Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu

فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ

Let man look at what he eats!

Falyanthuri al-insanu ila taAAamihi

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا

We poured that water and made it flow in abundance.

Anna sababna almaa sabban

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا

And We split open the earth (and thus),

Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqan

فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا

We caused sprouts to grow therein.

Faanbatna feeha habban

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا

Grapes and fresh plants,

WaAAinaban waqadban

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا

Olives and dates,

Wazaytoonan wanakhlan

وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا

Dense gardens of large trees,

Wahada-iqa ghulban

وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

Fruits and pastures,

Wafakihatan waabban

مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ

For the benefit of you and your cattle (animals).

MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum

فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ

When that frightening blast is heard,

Fa-itha jaati alssakhkhatu

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

At that time, man will flee from his brother,

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ

And from his mother and father,

Waommihi waabeehi

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ

And from his wife and sons!

Wasahibatihi wabaneehi

لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ

At that time, each will be to his own!

Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithin sha/nun yughneehi

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ

(Some) faces that day will be bright,

Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfiratun

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ

Laughing, rejoicing at the good news!

Dahikatun mustabshiratun

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ

And (some) faces that day will be covered in dust!

Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayha ghabaratun

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

Covered in darkness!

Tarhaquha qataratun

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ

They, the falsifiers (who are inclined towards falsity), are the very deniers of the knowledge of the reality!

Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu
