He Frowned — Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Translation

80:1

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He frowned and turned away

AAabasa watawalla

80:2

أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

that the blind man drew near him.

An jaahu al-aAAma

80:3

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And what will cause thee to recognize so that perhaps he will purify himself

Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

80:4

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

or yet recollect and a reminder profit him?

Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra

80:5

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But as for he who was self-complacent,

Amma mani istaghna

80:6

فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

then, thou hast attended to him

Faanta lahu tasadda

80:7

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and not upon thee is any blame if he purifies not himself.

Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

80:8

وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Yet as for him who drew near to thee, coming eagerly for knowledge

Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

then, thou hast paid no heed to him?

Faanta AAanhu talahha

80:11

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

No indeed! Truly, this is an admonition.

Kalla innaha tathkiratun

80:12

فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So let whoever willed, remember it

Faman shaa thakarahu

80:13

فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

in scrolls to be held in esteem,

Fee suhufin mukarramatin

80:14

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

ones that are exalted and ones that are purified

MarfooAAatin mutahharatin

80:15

بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

by the hands of generous writers

and ones who are kindly, generous.

Kiramin bararatin

80:17

قُتِلَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Perdition to the human being! How ungrateful he is!

Qutila al-insanu ma akfarahu

80:18

مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

From which thing did He create him?

Min ayyi shay-in khalaqahu

80:19

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He created him from seminal fluid then, ordained that he be.

Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

80:20

ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He made the way easy for him again.

Thumma alssabeela yassarahu

80:21

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Again, He caused him to die and be buried.

Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu

80:22

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Again, when He willed, He will revive him.

Thumma itha shaa ansharahu

80:23

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

No indeed! The human being finishes not what He commanded him.

Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu

80:24

فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, let the human being look on his food—

Falyanthuri al-insanu ila taAAamihi

80:25

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

how We, truly, unloosed rain water with a pouring out.

Anna sababna almaa sabban

80:26

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Again, We split the earth, a splitting.

Thumma shaqaqna al-arda shaqqan

80:27

فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We put forth in it grain

Faanbatna feeha habban

80:28

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and grapevines and reeds

WaAAinaban waqadban

80:29

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and olives and date palm trees

Wazaytoonan wanakhlan

80:30

وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and dense fertile gardens

and sweet fruits and whatever grows on the earth,

Wafakihatan waabban

80:32

مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

an enjoyment for you and your flocks.

MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum

80:33

فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, when the blare drew near,

Fa-itha jaati alssakhkhatu

80:34

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

that Day a man will run away from his brother

Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi

80:35

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and his mother and his father

Waommihi waabeehi

80:36

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and his companion wife and his children.

Wasahibatihi wabaneehi

80:37

لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

For every man of them on that Day will be a matter that will preoccupy him.

Likulli imri-in minhum yawma-ithin sha/nun yughneehi

80:38

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Faces that Day will be ones that are polished,

Wujoohun yawma-ithin musfiratun

80:39

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

ones who are laugh and ones who rejoice at good tidings.

Dahikatun mustabshiratun

80:40

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And faces on that Day will be dust-stained.

Wawujoohun yawma-ithin AAalayha ghabaratun

80:41

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Gloom will come over them.

Tarhaquha qataratun

80:42

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Those, they are the ones who are ungrateful, ones who act immorally.

Ola-ika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu
