وَوَٰعَدْنَا wawāʿadnā
And We appointed V
مُوسَىٰ mūsā
(for) Musa Noun
ثَلَٰثِينَ thalāthīna

لَيْلَةً laylatan

وَأَتْمَمْنَٰهَا wa-atmamnāhā
and We completed them V
بِعَشْرٍ biʿashrin
with ten (more) Noun
فَتَمَّ fatamma
so was completed V
مِيقَٰتُ mīqātu
(the) set term Noun
رَبِّهِۦٓ rabbihi
(of) his Lord Noun
أَرْبَعِينَ arbaʿīna
(of) forty Noun
لَيْلَةً laylatan
night(s) Noun
وَقَالَ waqāla
And said V
مُوسَىٰ mūsā
Musa Noun
لِأَخِيهِ li-akhīhi
to his brother Noun
هَٰرُونَ hārūna
Harun Noun
ٱخْلُفْنِى ukh'luf'nī
Take my place V
فِى fī
in Prep
قَوْمِى qawmī
my people Noun
وَأَصْلِحْ wa-aṣliḥ
and do right V
وَلَا walā
and (do) not Prep
تَتَّبِعْ tattabiʿ
follow V
سَبِيلَ sabīla
(the) way Noun
ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ l-muf'sidīna
(of) the corrupters Noun

We appointed thirty nights for Moses, then added ten more: the term set by his Lord was completed in forty nights. Moses said to his brother Aaron, ‘Take my place among my people: act rightly and do not follow the way of those who spread corruption.’

Arabic Text

۞ وَوَ ٰعَدۡنَا مُوسَىٰ ثَلَـٰثِینَ لَیۡلَةࣰ وَأَتۡمَمۡنَـٰهَا بِعَشۡرࣲ فَتَمَّ مِیقَـٰتُ رَبِّهِۦۤ أَرۡبَعِینَ لَیۡلَةࣰۚ وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِأَخِیهِ هَـٰرُونَ ٱخۡلُفۡنِی فِی قَوۡمِی وَأَصۡلِحۡ وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ سَبِیلَ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٤٢

wawāʿadnā mūsā thalāthīna laylatan wa-atmamnāhā biʿashrin fatamma mīqātu rabbihi arbaʿīna laylatan waqāla mūsā li-akhīhi hārūna ukh'luf'nī fī qawmī wa-aṣliḥ walā tattabiʿ sabīla l-muf'sidīn
