1 A Warning

الۤرۚ كِتَـٰبٌ أُحۡكِمَتۡ ءَایَـٰتُهُۥ ثُمَّ فُصِّلَتۡ مِن لَّدُنۡ حَكِیمٍ خَبِیرٍ ۝١

The Study Quran

Alif. Lam. Ra. A Book whose signs have been determined, then expounded, from the Presence of One Wise, Aware

alif-lam-ra kitābun uḥ'kimat āyātuhu thumma fuṣṣilat min ladun ḥakīmin khabīri

أَلَّا تَعۡبُدُوۤا۟ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَۚ إِنَّنِی لَكُم مِّنۡهُ نَذِیرࣱ وَبَشِیرࣱ ۝٢

The Study Quran

“Worship none but God. Truly I am a warner from Him, and a bearer of glad tidings

allā taʿbudū illā l-laha innanī lakum min'hu nadhīrun wabashīru

وَأَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ تُوبُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ یُمَتِّعۡكُم مَّتَـٰعًا حَسَنًا إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّى وَیُؤۡتِ كُلَّ ذِی فَضۡلࣲ فَضۡلَهُۥۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَإِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمࣲ كَبِیرٍ ۝٣

The Study Quran

And seek forgiveness from your Lord; then turn unto Him in repentance. He will grant you goodly enjoyment for a term appointed and give His Bounty unto everyone possessed of merit. But if you turn away, then truly I fear for you the punishment of a great Day

wa-ani is'taghfirū rabbakum thumma tūbū ilayhi yumattiʿ'kum matāʿan ḥasanan ilā ajalin musamman wayu'ti kulla dhī faḍlin faḍlahu wa-in tawallaw fa-innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin kabīri

إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡۖ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرٌ ۝٤

The Study Quran

Unto God is your return, and He is Powerful over all things.

ilā l-lahi marjiʿukum wahuwa ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُمۡ یَثۡنُونَ صُدُورَهُمۡ لِیَسۡتَخۡفُوا۟ مِنۡهُۚ أَلَا حِینَ یَسۡتَغۡشُونَ ثِیَابَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُ مَا یُسِرُّونَ وَمَا یُعۡلِنُونَۚ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِیمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝٥

The Study Quran

Behold! They fold up their breasts to hide from Him. Behold! When they cover themselves with their garments, He knows that which they hide and that which they disclose. Truly He knows what lies within breasts

alā innahum yathnūna ṣudūrahum liyastakhfū min'hu alā ḥīna yastaghshūna thiyābahum yaʿlamu mā yusirrūna wamā yuʿ'linūna innahu ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr

۞ وَمَا مِن دَاۤبَّةࣲ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رِزۡقُهَا وَیَعۡلَمُ مُسۡتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسۡتَوۡدَعَهَاۚ كُلࣱّ فِی كِتَـٰبࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٦

The Study Quran

There is no creature that crawls upon the earth but that its provision lies with God. And He knows its dwelling place and its repository. All is in a clear Book

wamā min dābbatin fī l-arḍi illā ʿalā l-lahi riz'quhā wayaʿlamu mus'taqarrahā wamus'tawdaʿahā kullun fī kitābin mubīni

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامࣲ وَكَانَ عَرۡشُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلۡمَاۤءِ لِیَبۡلُوَكُمۡ أَیُّكُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ عَمَلࣰاۗ وَلَىِٕن قُلۡتَ إِنَّكُم مَّبۡعُوثُونَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱلۡمَوۡتِ لَیَقُولَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٧

The Study Quran

He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, while His Throne was upon the water, that He may try you as to which of you is most virtuous in deed. Yet if thou sayest, “Truly you shall be resurrected after death,” the disbelievers will surely say, “This is naught but manifest sorcery!

wahuwa alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa fī sittati ayyāmin wakāna ʿarshuhu ʿalā l-māi liyabluwakum ayyukum aḥsanu ʿamalan wala-in qul'ta innakum mabʿūthūna min baʿdi l-mawti layaqūlanna alladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnu

وَلَىِٕنۡ أَخَّرۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ إِلَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣲ مَّعۡدُودَةࣲ لَّیَقُولُنَّ مَا یَحۡبِسُهُۥۤۗ أَلَا یَوۡمَ یَأۡتِیهِمۡ لَیۡسَ مَصۡرُوفًا عَنۡهُمۡ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٨

The Study Quran

And if We grant them reprieve from the punishment for a limited time, they will surely say, “What holds it back?” Behold! On the day when it comes upon them, it shall not be turned away from them, and that which they used to mock will beset them

wala-in akharnā ʿanhumu l-ʿadhāba ilā ummatin maʿdūdatin layaqūlunna mā yaḥbisuhu alā yawma yatīhim laysa maṣrūfan ʿanhum waḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

2 Truth of Revelation

وَلَىِٕنۡ أَذَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِنَّا رَحۡمَةࣰ ثُمَّ نَزَعۡنَـٰهَا مِنۡهُ إِنَّهُۥ لَیَءُوسࣱ كَفُورࣱ ۝٩

The Study Quran

And if We cause man to taste Mercy from Us, and then withdraw it from him, verily he is despondent, ungrateful

wala-in adhaqnā l-insāna minnā raḥmatan thumma nazaʿnāhā min'hu innahu layaūsun kafūru

وَلَىِٕنۡ أَذَقۡنَـٰهُ نَعۡمَاۤءَ بَعۡدَ ضَرَّاۤءَ مَسَّتۡهُ لَیَقُولَنَّ ذَهَبَ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتُ عَنِّیۤۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَفَرِحࣱ فَخُورٌ ۝١٠

The Study Quran

And if We cause him to taste some favor after adversity has befallen him, he will surely say, “The evils have gone from me.” Verily he is exultant, boastful

wala-in adhaqnāhu naʿmāa baʿda ḍarrāa massathu layaqūlanna dhahaba l-sayiātu ʿannī innahu lafariḥun fakhūru

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُم مَّغۡفِرَةࣱ وَأَجۡرࣱ كَبِیرࣱ ۝١١

The Study Quran

save those who are patient and perform righteous deeds; it is they for whom there shall be forgiveness and a great reward

illā alladhīna ṣabarū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti ulāika lahum maghfiratun wa-ajrun kabīru

فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكُۢ بَعۡضَ مَا یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیۡكَ وَضَاۤىِٕقُۢ بِهِۦ صَدۡرُكَ أَن یَقُولُوا۟ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ كَنزٌ أَوۡ جَاۤءَ مَعَهُۥ مَلَكٌۚ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ نَذِیرࣱۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَكِیلٌ ۝١٢

The Study Quran

Perchance thou mightest omit some of that which We have revealed unto thee, and thy breast might be constrained because they say, “Why has no treasure been sent down upon him, or an angel not come with him?” Thou art only a warner, and God is Guardian over all things

falaʿallaka tārikun baʿḍa mā yūḥā ilayka waḍāiqun bihi ṣadruka an yaqūlū lawlā unzila ʿalayhi kanzun aw jāa maʿahu malakun innamā anta nadhīrun wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin wakīlu

أَمۡ یَقُولُونَ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُۖ قُلۡ فَأۡتُوا۟ بِعَشۡرِ سُوَرࣲ مِّثۡلِهِۦ مُفۡتَرَیَـٰتࣲ وَٱدۡعُوا۟ مَنِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٣

The Study Quran

Or do they say, “He has fabricated it”? Say, “Then bring ten surahs like it, fabricated, and call upon whomsoever you can apart from God, if you are truthful.

am yaqūlūna if'tarāhu qul fatū biʿashri suwarin mith'lihi muf'tarayātin wa-id'ʿū mani is'taṭaʿtum min dūni l-lahi in kuntum ṣādiqīn

فَإِلَّمۡ یَسۡتَجِیبُوا۟ لَكُمۡ فَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّمَاۤ أُنزِلَ بِعِلۡمِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَن لَّاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ فَهَلۡ أَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ ۝١٤

The Study Quran

But if they answer thee not, then know that it has been sent down with God’s Knowledge and that there is no god but He. So are you submitters

fa-illam yastajībū lakum fa-iʿ'lamū annamā unzila biʿil'mi l-lahi wa-an lā ilāha illā huwa fahal antum mus'limūn

مَن كَانَ یُرِیدُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَزِینَتَهَا نُوَفِّ إِلَیۡهِمۡ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ فِیهَا وَهُمۡ فِیهَا لَا یُبۡخَسُونَ ۝١٥

The Study Quran

Whosoever desires the life of this world and its adornment, We shall pay them in full for their deeds therein, and therein they will not be deprived

man kāna yurīdu l-ḥayata l-dun'yā wazīnatahā nuwaffi ilayhim aʿmālahum fīhā wahum fīhā lā yub'khasūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَیۡسَ لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ إِلَّا ٱلنَّارُۖ وَحَبِطَ مَا صَنَعُوا۟ فِیهَا وَبَـٰطِلࣱ مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦

The Study Quran

They are those for whom there shall be naught in the Hereafter but the Fire. Whatsoever they had wrought therein shall come to naught, and vain was that which they used to do

ulāika alladhīna laysa lahum fī l-ākhirati illā l-nāru waḥabiṭa mā ṣanaʿū fīhā wabāṭilun mā kānū yaʿmalūn

أَفَمَن كَانَ عَلَىٰ بَیِّنَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ وَیَتۡلُوهُ شَاهِدࣱ مِّنۡهُ وَمِن قَبۡلِهِۦ كِتَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِمَامࣰا وَرَحۡمَةًۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦۚ وَمَن یَكۡفُرۡ بِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابِ فَٱلنَّارُ مَوۡعِدُهُۥۚ فَلَا تَكُ فِی مِرۡیَةࣲ مِّنۡهُۚ إِنَّهُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٧

The Study Quran

So what of the one who stands upon a clear proof from his Lord, and for whom it is recited by a witness from Him? And before it there was the Book of Moses, a guide and a mercy. It is they who believe in it. And whosoever disbelieves in it from among the parties, the Fire is their tryst. So be not in doubt concerning it. Verily it is the truth from thy Lord, but most of mankind believe not

afaman kāna ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbihi wayatlūhu shāhidun min'hu wamin qablihi kitābu mūsā imāman waraḥmatan ulāika yu'minūna bihi waman yakfur bihi mina l-aḥzābi fal-nāru mawʿiduhu falā taku fī mir'yatin min'hu innahu l-ḥaqu min rabbika walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yu'minūn

وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یُعۡرَضُونَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ وَیَقُولُ ٱلۡأَشۡهَـٰدُ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَبُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡۚ أَلَا لَعۡنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٨

The Study Quran

And who does greater wrong than one who fabricates a lie against God? It is they who will be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, “These are the ones who lied against their Lord.” Behold! The curse of God is upon the wrongdoers

waman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban ulāika yuʿ'raḍūna ʿalā rabbihim wayaqūlu l-ashhādu hāulāi alladhīna kadhabū ʿalā rabbihim alā laʿnatu l-lahi ʿalā l-ẓālimīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَیَبۡغُونَهَا عِوَجࣰا وَهُم بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ هُمۡ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝١٩

The Study Quran

those who turn from the way of God and seek to make it crooked, and who disbelieve in the Hereafter

alladhīna yaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi wayabghūnahā ʿiwajan wahum bil-ākhirati hum kāfirūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَمۡ یَكُونُوا۟ مُعۡجِزِینَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِنۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَۘ یُضَـٰعَفُ لَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٢٠

The Study Quran

Such as these cannot thwart [aught] on earth, and they have no protector apart from God. For them the punishment will be multiplied. They were not able to hear; neither did they see

ulāika lam yakūnū muʿ'jizīna fī l-arḍi wamā kāna lahum min dūni l-lahi min awliyāa yuḍāʿafu lahumu l-ʿadhābu mā kānū yastaṭīʿūna l-samʿa wamā kānū yub'ṣirūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَضَلَّ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٢١

The Study Quran

They are those who have lost their souls, and that which they used to fabricate has forsaken them

ulāika alladhīna khasirū anfusahum waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūn

لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ هُمُ ٱلۡأَخۡسَرُونَ ۝٢٢

The Study Quran

There is no doubt that in the Hereafter they shall be the greatest losers

lā jarama annahum fī l-ākhirati humu l-akhsarūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَأَخۡبَتُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝٢٣

The Study Quran

Truly those who believe and perform righteous deeds and are humble before their Lord, it is they who are the inhabitants of the Garden; they shall abide therein

inna alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wa-akhbatū ilā rabbihim ulāika aṣḥābu l-janati hum fīhā khālidūn

۞ مَثَلُ ٱلۡفَرِیقَیۡنِ كَٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ وَٱلۡأَصَمِّ وَٱلۡبَصِیرِ وَٱلسَّمِیعِۚ هَلۡ یَسۡتَوِیَانِ مَثَلًاۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٢٤

The Study Quran

The parable of these two groups is that of one blind and deaf, and one hearing and seeing. Are they equal when compared? Will you not remember

mathalu l-farīqayni kal-aʿmā wal-aṣami wal-baṣīri wal-samīʿi hal yastawiyāni mathalan afalā tadhakkarūn

3 History of Noah

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِنِّی لَكُمۡ نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝٢٥

The Study Quran

Indeed, We sent Noah unto his people, “Truly I am unto you a clear warner

walaqad arsalnā nūḥan ilā qawmihi innī lakum nadhīrun mubīnu

أَن لَّا تَعۡبُدُوۤا۟ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَۖ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ أَلِیمࣲ ۝٢٦

The Study Quran

that you might worship none but God. Truly I fear for you the punishment of a painful day.

an lā taʿbudū illā l-laha innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin alīmi

فَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوۡمِهِۦ مَا نَرَىٰكَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣰا مِّثۡلَنَا وَمَا نَرَىٰكَ ٱتَّبَعَكَ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ أَرَاذِلُنَا بَادِیَ ٱلرَّأۡیِ وَمَا نَرَىٰ لَكُمۡ عَلَیۡنَا مِن فَضۡلِۭ بَلۡ نَظُنُّكُمۡ كَـٰذِبِینَ ۝٢٧

The Study Quran

But the notables among his people who disbelieved said, “We see you as naught but a human being like us, and we see none who follow you, save the lowliest among us, as is clear to see. Nor do we see that you have any merit over us; nay, we think that you are liars.

faqāla l-mala-u alladhīna kafarū min qawmihi mā narāka illā basharan mith'lanā wamā narāka ittabaʿaka illā alladhīna hum arādhilunā bādiya l-rayi wamā narā lakum ʿalaynā min faḍlin bal naẓunnukum kādhibīn

قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَیِّنَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّی وَءَاتَىٰنِی رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّنۡ عِندِهِۦ فَعُمِّیَتۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أَنُلۡزِمُكُمُوهَا وَأَنتُمۡ لَهَا كَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٢٨

The Study Quran

He said, “O my people! What think you: if I stand upon a clear proof from my Lord, and He has granted me Mercy from Himself, and you are blind to it. Shall we force it upon you, though you are unwilling

qāla yāqawmi ara-aytum in kuntu ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbī waātānī raḥmatan min ʿindihi faʿummiyat ʿalaykum anul'zimukumūhā wa-antum lahā kārihūn

وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ لَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مَالًاۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِۚ وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّهُم مُّلَـٰقُوا۟ رَبِّهِمۡ وَلَـٰكِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰكُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا تَجۡهَلُونَ ۝٢٩

The Study Quran

O my people! I ask not of you any wealth in return for it; my reward lies only with God. And I shall not drive away those who believe; truly they shall meet their Lord. But I see that you are an ignorant people

wayāqawmi lā asalukum ʿalayhi mālan in ajriya illā ʿalā l-lahi wamā anā biṭāridi alladhīna āmanū innahum mulāqū rabbihim walākinnī arākum qawman tajhalūn

وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ مَن یَنصُرُنِی مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِن طَرَدتُّهُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٣٠

The Study Quran

O my people! Who would help me against God, were I to drive them away? Will you not remember

wayāqawmi man yanṣurunī mina l-lahi in ṭaradttuhum afalā tadhakkarūn

وَلَاۤ أَقُولُ لَكُمۡ عِندِی خَزَاۤىِٕنُ ٱللَّهِ وَلَاۤ أَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبَ وَلَاۤ أَقُولُ إِنِّی مَلَكࣱ وَلَاۤ أَقُولُ لِلَّذِینَ تَزۡدَرِیۤ أَعۡیُنُكُمۡ لَن یُؤۡتِیَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ خَیۡرًاۖ ٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ إِنِّیۤ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٣١

The Study Quran

I say not unto you that with me are the treasuries of God; nor do I know the Unseen. And I say not that I am an angel; nor do I say of those who are despicable in your eyes, ‘God will not give them any good’—God knows best what is in their souls—for then I would indeed be among the wrongdoers.

walā aqūlu lakum ʿindī khazāinu l-lahi walā aʿlamu l-ghayba walā aqūlu innī malakun walā aqūlu lilladhīna tazdarī aʿyunukum lan yu'tiyahumu l-lahu khayran l-lahu aʿlamu bimā fī anfusihim innī idhan lamina l-ẓālimīn

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰنُوحُ قَدۡ جَـٰدَلۡتَنَا فَأَكۡثَرۡتَ جِدَ ٰلَنَا فَأۡتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَاۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣٢

The Study Quran

They said, “O Noah! You have disputed with us, and have prolonged the disputation; so bring upon us that wherewith you have threatened us, if you are among the truthful.

qālū yānūḥu qad jādaltanā fa-aktharta jidālanā fatinā bimā taʿidunā in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ إِنَّمَا یَأۡتِیكُم بِهِ ٱللَّهُ إِن شَاۤءَ وَمَاۤ أَنتُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ ۝٣٣

The Study Quran

He said, “God alone shall bring it to you, if He will, and you cannot thwart [it]

qāla innamā yatīkum bihi l-lahu in shāa wamā antum bimuʿ'jizīn

وَلَا یَنفَعُكُمۡ نُصۡحِیۤ إِنۡ أَرَدتُّ أَنۡ أَنصَحَ لَكُمۡ إِن كَانَ ٱللَّهُ یُرِیدُ أَن یُغۡوِیَكُمۡۚ هُوَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٣٤

The Study Quran

And my sincere advice will not benefit you, much as I desire to advise you, if God desires to cause you to err. He is your Lord, and unto Him shall you be returned.

walā yanfaʿukum nuṣ'ḥī in aradttu an anṣaḥa lakum in kāna l-lahu yurīdu an yugh'wiyakum huwa rabbukum wa-ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

أَمۡ یَقُولُونَ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُۖ قُلۡ إِنِ ٱفۡتَرَیۡتُهُۥ فَعَلَیَّ إِجۡرَامِی وَأَنَا۠ بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٣٥

The Study Quran

Or do they say, “He has fabricated it”? Say, “If I fabricated it, then my guilt is upon me; but I am quit of that which you commit.

am yaqūlūna if'tarāhu qul ini if'taraytuhu faʿalayya ij'rāmī wa-anā barīon mimmā tuj'rimūn

4 History of Noah

وَأُوحِیَ إِلَىٰ نُوحٍ أَنَّهُۥ لَن یُؤۡمِنَ مِن قَوۡمِكَ إِلَّا مَن قَدۡ ءَامَنَ فَلَا تَبۡتَىِٕسۡ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٣٦

The Study Quran

And it was revealed unto Noah, “None of thy people shall believe, save those who had already believed. So be not distressed by that which they used to do

waūḥiya ilā nūḥin annahu lan yu'mina min qawmika illā man qad āmana falā tabta-is bimā kānū yafʿalūn

وَٱصۡنَعِ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ بِأَعۡیُنِنَا وَوَحۡیِنَا وَلَا تُخَـٰطِبۡنِی فِی ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ إِنَّهُم مُّغۡرَقُونَ ۝٣٧

The Study Quran

Build the Ark before Our Eyes and by Our Revelation. And address Me not concerning those who did wrong; surely they shall be drowned.

wa-iṣ'naʿi l-ful'ka bi-aʿyuninā wawaḥyinā walā tukhāṭib'nī fī alladhīna ẓalamū innahum mugh'raqūn

وَیَصۡنَعُ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ وَكُلَّمَا مَرَّ عَلَیۡهِ مَلَأࣱ مِّن قَوۡمِهِۦ سَخِرُوا۟ مِنۡهُۚ قَالَ إِن تَسۡخَرُوا۟ مِنَّا فَإِنَّا نَسۡخَرُ مِنكُمۡ كَمَا تَسۡخَرُونَ ۝٣٨

The Study Quran

And he was building the Ark, and whenever notables among his people passed by him, they would scoff at him. He said, “If you scoff at us, surely we shall scoff at you, just as you scoff

wayaṣnaʿu l-ful'ka wakullamā marra ʿalayhi mala-on min qawmihi sakhirū min'hu qāla in taskharū minnā fa-innā naskharu minkum kamā taskharūn

فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ مَن یَأۡتِیهِ عَذَابࣱ یُخۡزِیهِ وَیَحِلُّ عَلَیۡهِ عَذَابࣱ مُّقِیمٌ ۝٣٩

The Study Quran

For soon you shall know upon whom there comes a punishment that disgraces him and upon whom there falls a punishment enduring.

fasawfa taʿlamūna man yatīhi ʿadhābun yukh'zīhi wayaḥillu ʿalayhi ʿadhābun muqīmu

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ قُلۡنَا ٱحۡمِلۡ فِیهَا مِن كُلࣲّ زَوۡجَیۡنِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِ وَأَهۡلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلۡقَوۡلُ وَمَنۡ ءَامَنَۚ وَمَاۤ ءَامَنَ مَعَهُۥۤ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣱ ۝٤٠

The Study Quran

Till when Our Command came, and the oven gushed forth, We said, “Carry on board two of every kind, and thy family—save the one against whom the Word has already gone forth—and those who believe.” And none believed along with him, save a few

ḥattā idhā jāa amrunā wafāra l-tanūru qul'nā iḥ'mil fīhā min kullin zawjayni ith'nayni wa-ahlaka illā man sabaqa ʿalayhi l-qawlu waman āmana wamā āmana maʿahu illā qalīlu

۞ وَقَالَ ٱرۡكَبُوا۟ فِیهَا بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ مَجۡر۪ىٰهَا وَمُرۡسَىٰهَاۤۚ إِنَّ رَبِّی لَغَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٤١

The Study Quran

He said, “Embark upon it. In the Name of God be its coursing and its mooring. Truly my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.

waqāla ir'kabū fīhā bis'mi l-lahi majrahā wamur'sāhā inna rabbī laghafūrun raḥīmu

وَهِیَ تَجۡرِی بِهِمۡ فِی مَوۡجࣲ كَٱلۡجِبَالِ وَنَادَىٰ نُوحٌ ٱبۡنَهُۥ وَكَانَ فِی مَعۡزِلࣲ یَـٰبُنَیَّ ٱرۡكَب مَّعَنَا وَلَا تَكُن مَّعَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٤٢

The Study Quran

And it sailed with them upon waves like mountains. And Noah called out to his son, who remained aloof, “O my son! Embark with us, and be not with the disbelievers.

wahiya tajrī bihim fī mawjin kal-jibāli wanādā nūḥun ib'nahu wakāna fī maʿzilin yābunayya ir'kab maʿanā walā takun maʿa l-kāfirīn

قَالَ سَءَاوِیۤ إِلَىٰ جَبَلࣲ یَعۡصِمُنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمَاۤءِۚ قَالَ لَا عَاصِمَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مِنۡ أَمۡرِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَۚ وَحَالَ بَیۡنَهُمَا ٱلۡمَوۡجُ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُغۡرَقِینَ ۝٤٣

The Study Quran

He said, “I shall take refuge on a mountain; it will protect me from the water.” He said, “There is no protector on this day from the Command of God, save for the one upon whom He has Mercy.” And the waves came between them, and he was among the drowned

qāla saāwī ilā jabalin yaʿṣimunī mina l-māi qāla lā ʿāṣima l-yawma min amri l-lahi illā man raḥima waḥāla baynahumā l-mawju fakāna mina l-mugh'raqīn

وَقِیلَ یَـٰۤأَرۡضُ ٱبۡلَعِی مَاۤءَكِ وَیَـٰسَمَاۤءُ أَقۡلِعِی وَغِیضَ ٱلۡمَاۤءُ وَقُضِیَ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ وَٱسۡتَوَتۡ عَلَى ٱلۡجُودِیِّۖ وَقِیلَ بُعۡدࣰا لِّلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٤٤

The Study Quran

And it was said, “O earth! Swallow your water! And O sky! Hold back!” And the water was made to recede, and the command was carried out, and it settled on [Mount] Judi. And it was said, “Away with the wrongdoing people!

waqīla yāarḍu ib'laʿī māaki wayāsamāu aqliʿī waghīḍa l-māu waquḍiya l-amru wa-is'tawat ʿalā l-jūdiyi waqīla buʿ'dan lil'qawmi l-ẓālimīn

وَنَادَىٰ نُوحࣱ رَّبَّهُۥ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ ٱبۡنِی مِنۡ أَهۡلِی وَإِنَّ وَعۡدَكَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَأَنتَ أَحۡكَمُ ٱلۡحَـٰكِمِینَ ۝٤٥

The Study Quran

And Noah called out to his Lord and said, “O my Lord! Truly my son is from my family. Thy Promise is indeed true, and Thou art the most just of judges.

wanādā nūḥun rabbahu faqāla rabbi inna ib'nī min ahlī wa-inna waʿdaka l-ḥaqu wa-anta aḥkamu l-ḥākimīn

قَالَ یَـٰنُوحُ إِنَّهُۥ لَیۡسَ مِنۡ أَهۡلِكَۖ إِنَّهُۥ عَمَلٌ غَیۡرُ صَـٰلِحࣲۖ فَلَا تَسۡءَلۡنِ مَا لَیۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمٌۖ إِنِّیۤ أَعِظُكَ أَن تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِینَ ۝٤٦

The Study Quran

He said, “O Noah! Truly he is not from thy family; surely such conduct was not righteous. So question Me not concerning that whereof thou hast no knowledge; truly I exhort thee, lest thou be among the ignorant.

qāla yānūḥu innahu laysa min ahlika innahu ʿamalun ghayru ṣāliḥin falā tasalni mā laysa laka bihi ʿil'mun innī aʿiẓuka an takūna mina l-jāhilīn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّیۤ أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنۡ أَسۡءَلَكَ مَا لَیۡسَ لِی بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣱۖ وَإِلَّا تَغۡفِرۡ لِی وَتَرۡحَمۡنِیۤ أَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٤٧

The Study Quran

He said, “My Lord! Truly I seek refuge in Thee from questioning Thee concerning that whereof I have no knowledge. If thou dost not forgive me and have Mercy upon me, I shall be among the losers.

qāla rabbi innī aʿūdhu bika an asalaka mā laysa lī bihi ʿil'mun wa-illā taghfir lī watarḥamnī akun mina l-khāsirīn

قِیلَ یَـٰنُوحُ ٱهۡبِطۡ بِسَلَـٰمࣲ مِّنَّا وَبَرَكَـٰتٍ عَلَیۡكَ وَعَلَىٰۤ أُمَمࣲ مِّمَّن مَّعَكَۚ وَأُمَمࣱ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمۡ ثُمَّ یَمَسُّهُم مِّنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٤٨

The Study Quran

It was said, “O Noah! Disembark with peace from Us, and blessings upon thee and upon the communities that [will arise] from those with thee, and communities for whom We shall grant enjoyment. Then a painful punishment from Us shall befall them.

qīla yānūḥu ih'biṭ bisalāmin minnā wabarakātin ʿalayka waʿalā umamin mimman maʿaka wa-umamun sanumattiʿuhum thumma yamassuhum minnā ʿadhābun alīmu

تِلۡكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَاۤءِ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ نُوحِیهَاۤ إِلَیۡكَۖ مَا كُنتَ تَعۡلَمُهَاۤ أَنتَ وَلَا قَوۡمُكَ مِن قَبۡلِ هَـٰذَاۖ فَٱصۡبِرۡۖ إِنَّ ٱلۡعَـٰقِبَةَ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٤٩

The Study Quran

These are among the accounts of the Unseen that We reveal unto thee. Thou knewest not of them, neither thou nor thy people, beforehand. So be patient. Truly the end belongs to the reverent

til'ka min anbāi l-ghaybi nūḥīhā ilayka mā kunta taʿlamuhā anta walā qawmuka min qabli hādhā fa-iṣ'bir inna l-ʿāqibata lil'muttaqīn

5 History of Hud

وَإِلَىٰ عَادٍ أَخَاهُمۡ هُودࣰاۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۤۖ إِنۡ أَنتُمۡ إِلَّا مُفۡتَرُونَ ۝٥٠

The Study Quran

And unto ?Ad, their brother Hud. He said, “O my people! Worship God! You have no god other than Him. You are naught but fabricators

wa-ilā ʿādin akhāhum hūdan qāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu in antum illā muf'tarūn

یَـٰقَوۡمِ لَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ أَجۡرًاۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلَّذِی فَطَرَنِیۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٥١

The Study Quran

O my people! I ask not of you any reward for it. My reward lies only with the One Who originated me. Do you not understand

yāqawmi lā asalukum ʿalayhi ajran in ajriya illā ʿalā alladhī faṭaranī afalā taʿqilūn

وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ تُوبُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ یُرۡسِلِ ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ عَلَیۡكُم مِّدۡرَارࣰا وَیَزِدۡكُمۡ قُوَّةً إِلَىٰ قُوَّتِكُمۡ وَلَا تَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ مُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٥٢

The Study Quran

O my people! Seek forgiveness from your Lord; then turn unto Him in repentance. He will send the sky upon you with abundant rain, and add strength to your strength. And turn not away, guilty.

wayāqawmi is'taghfirū rabbakum thumma tūbū ilayhi yur'sili l-samāa ʿalaykum mid'rāran wayazid'kum quwwatan ilā quwwatikum walā tatawallaw muj'rimīn

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰهُودُ مَا جِئۡتَنَا بِبَیِّنَةࣲ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِتَارِكِیۤ ءَالِهَتِنَا عَن قَوۡلِكَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ لَكَ بِمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥٣

The Study Quran

They said, “O Hud! You have not brought us a clear proof, and we shall not forsake our gods on your word, for we are not believers in you

qālū yāhūdu mā ji'tanā bibayyinatin wamā naḥnu bitārikī ālihatinā ʿan qawlika wamā naḥnu laka bimu'minīn

إِن نَّقُولُ إِلَّا ٱعۡتَرَىٰكَ بَعۡضُ ءَالِهَتِنَا بِسُوۤءࣲۗ قَالَ إِنِّیۤ أُشۡهِدُ ٱللَّهَ وَٱشۡهَدُوۤا۟ أَنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٥٤

The Study Quran

We say only that one of our gods has smitten you with evil.” He said, “I call God as witness—and you be witness—that I am quit of that which you ascribe as partner

in naqūlu illā iʿ'tarāka baʿḍu ālihatinā bisūin qāla innī ush'hidu l-laha wa-ish'hadū annī barīon mimmā tush'rikūn

مِن دُونِهِۦۖ فَكِیدُونِی جَمِیعࣰا ثُمَّ لَا تُنظِرُونِ ۝٥٥

The Study Quran

apart from Him. So scheme against me then, all together, and grant me no respite

min dūnihi fakīdūnī jamīʿan thumma lā tunẓirūn

إِنِّی تَوَكَّلۡتُ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رَبِّی وَرَبِّكُمۚ مَّا مِن دَاۤبَّةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ ءَاخِذُۢ بِنَاصِیَتِهَاۤۚ إِنَّ رَبِّی عَلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٥٦

The Study Quran

Truly I trust in God, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature that crawls, but that He holds it by its forelock. Truly my Lord is upon a straight path

innī tawakkaltu ʿalā l-lahi rabbī warabbikum mā min dābbatin illā huwa ākhidhun bināṣiyatihā inna rabbī ʿalā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

فَإِن تَوَلَّوۡا۟ فَقَدۡ أَبۡلَغۡتُكُم مَّاۤ أُرۡسِلۡتُ بِهِۦۤ إِلَیۡكُمۡۚ وَیَسۡتَخۡلِفُ رَبِّی قَوۡمًا غَیۡرَكُمۡ وَلَا تَضُرُّونَهُۥ شَیۡءًاۚ إِنَّ رَبِّی عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءٍ حَفِیظࣱ ۝٥٧

The Study Quran

But if you turn away, [know that] I have delivered unto you the message wherewith I have been sent by Him. My Lord will cause you to be succeeded by a people other than yourselves, and you harm Him not in the least. Truly my Lord is Watcher over all things.

fa-in tawallaw faqad ablaghtukum mā ur'sil'tu bihi ilaykum wayastakhlifu rabbī qawman ghayrakum walā taḍurrūnahu shayan inna rabbī ʿalā kulli shayin ḥafīẓu

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُنَا نَجَّیۡنَا هُودࣰا وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحۡمَةࣲ مِّنَّا وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُم مِّنۡ عَذَابٍ غَلِیظࣲ ۝٥٨

The Study Quran

And when Our Command came, We saved Hud and those who believed with him through a Mercy from Us; and We saved them from a grave punishment

walammā jāa amrunā najjaynā hūdan wa-alladhīna āmanū maʿahu biraḥmatin minnā wanajjaynāhum min ʿadhābin ghalīẓi

وَتِلۡكَ عَادࣱۖ جَحَدُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَعَصَوۡا۟ رُسُلَهُۥ وَٱتَّبَعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ كُلِّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِیدࣲ ۝٥٩

The Study Quran

That was ?Ad. They rejected the signs of their Lord, disobeyed the messengers, and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant

watil'ka ʿādun jaḥadū biāyāti rabbihim waʿaṣaw rusulahu wa-ittabaʿū amra kulli jabbārin ʿanīdi

وَأُتۡبِعُوا۟ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا لَعۡنَةࣰ وَیَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ عَادࣰا كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمۡۗ أَلَا بُعۡدࣰا لِّعَادࣲ قَوۡمِ هُودࣲ ۝٦٠

The Study Quran

And they were pursued by a curse in this world, and [shall be] on the Day of Resurrection. Behold! Truly ?Ad disbelieved in their Lord. Behold! Away with ?Ad, the people of Hud

wa-ut'biʿū fī hādhihi l-dun'yā laʿnatan wayawma l-qiyāmati alā inna ʿādan kafarū rabbahum alā buʿ'dan liʿādin qawmi hūdi

6 History of Salih

۞ وَإِلَىٰ ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمۡ صَـٰلِحࣰاۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۖ هُوَ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱسۡتَعۡمَرَكُمۡ فِیهَا فَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُوهُ ثُمَّ تُوبُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِۚ إِنَّ رَبِّی قَرِیبࣱ مُّجِیبࣱ ۝٦١

The Study Quran

And to Thamud, their brother ?ali?. He said, “O my people! Worship God! You have no god other than Him. He brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein. So seek forgiveness from Him; then turn unto Him in repentance. Truly my Lord is Nigh, Responsive.

wa-ilā thamūda akhāhum ṣāliḥan qāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu huwa ansha-akum mina l-arḍi wa-is'taʿmarakum fīhā fa-is'taghfirūhu thumma tūbū ilayhi inna rabbī qarībun mujību

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰصَـٰلِحُ قَدۡ كُنتَ فِینَا مَرۡجُوࣰّا قَبۡلَ هَـٰذَاۤۖ أَتَنۡهَىٰنَاۤ أَن نَّعۡبُدَ مَا یَعۡبُدُ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا وَإِنَّنَا لَفِی شَكࣲّ مِّمَّا تَدۡعُونَاۤ إِلَیۡهِ مُرِیبࣲ ۝٦٢

The Study Quran

They said, “O ?ali?! You were a source of hope among us before this. Do you forbid us to worship that which our fathers worshipped, while we remain in grave doubt about that to which you call us?

qālū yāṣāliḥu qad kunta fīnā marjuwwan qabla hādhā atanhānā an naʿbuda mā yaʿbudu ābāunā wa-innanā lafī shakkin mimmā tadʿūnā ilayhi murībi

قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَیِّنَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّی وَءَاتَىٰنِی مِنۡهُ رَحۡمَةࣰ فَمَن یَنصُرُنِی مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِنۡ عَصَیۡتُهُۥۖ فَمَا تَزِیدُونَنِی غَیۡرَ تَخۡسِیرࣲ ۝٦٣

The Study Quran

He said, “O my people! What think you: if I stand up on a clear proof from my Lord, and He has granted me Mercy from Himself, then who can help me against God, were I to disobey Him? For you would increase me in naught but loss.

qāla yāqawmi ara-aytum in kuntu ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbī waātānī min'hu raḥmatan faman yanṣurunī mina l-lahi in ʿaṣaytuhu famā tazīdūnanī ghayra takhsīri

وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةُ ٱللَّهِ لَكُمۡ ءَایَةࣰۖ فَذَرُوهَا تَأۡكُلۡ فِیۤ أَرۡضِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابࣱ قَرِیبࣱ ۝٦٤

The Study Quran

O my people! This she-camel of God is a sign unto you. Leave her to graze freely on God’s earth, and cause her no harm, lest you be seized by a punishment nigh.

wayāqawmi hādhihi nāqatu l-lahi lakum āyatan fadharūhā takul fī arḍi l-lahi walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābun qarību

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَقَالَ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ فِی دَارِكُمۡ ثَلَـٰثَةَ أَیَّامࣲۖ ذَ ٰلِكَ وَعۡدٌ غَیۡرُ مَكۡذُوبࣲ ۝٦٥

The Study Quran

But they hamstrung her. So he said, “Enjoy yourselves in your abode for three days—that is a promise that will not be belied.

faʿaqarūhā faqāla tamattaʿū fī dārikum thalāthata ayyāmin dhālika waʿdun ghayru makdhūbi

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُنَا نَجَّیۡنَا صَـٰلِحࣰا وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحۡمَةࣲ مِّنَّا وَمِنۡ خِزۡیِ یَوۡمِىِٕذٍۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلۡقَوِیُّ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ۝٦٦

The Study Quran

So when Our Command came, We saved ?ali? and those who believed with him, through a Mercy from Us, and from the disgrace of that day. Truly thy Lord, He is the Strong, the Mighty

falammā jāa amrunā najjaynā ṣāliḥan wa-alladhīna āmanū maʿahu biraḥmatin minnā wamin khiz'yi yawmi-idhin inna rabbaka huwa l-qawiyu l-ʿazīz

وَأَخَذَ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ فِی دِیَـٰرِهِمۡ جَـٰثِمِینَ ۝٦٧

The Study Quran

The Cry seized those who did wrong, and morning found them lying lifeless in their abode

wa-akhadha alladhīna ẓalamū l-ṣayḥatu fa-aṣbaḥū fī diyārihim jāthimīn

كَأَن لَّمۡ یَغۡنَوۡا۟ فِیهَاۤۗ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ ثَمُودَا۟ كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمۡۗ أَلَا بُعۡدࣰا لِّثَمُودَ ۝٦٨

The Study Quran

as though they had never dwelt there. Behold! Truly Thamud disbelieved in their Lord. Behold! Away with Thamud

ka-an lam yaghnaw fīhā alā inna thamūdā kafarū rabbahum alā buʿ'dan lithamūd

7 Abraham and Lot

وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُنَاۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ بِٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰ قَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمࣰاۖ قَالَ سَلَـٰمࣱۖ فَمَا لَبِثَ أَن جَاۤءَ بِعِجۡلٍ حَنِیذࣲ ۝٦٩

The Study Quran

And indeed Our messengers came to Abraham with glad tidings. They said, “Peace.” “Peace,” he said, and he hastened to bring them a roasted calf

walaqad jāat rusulunā ib'rāhīma bil-bush'rā qālū salāman qāla salāmun famā labitha an jāa biʿij'lin ḥanīdhi

فَلَمَّا رَءَاۤ أَیۡدِیَهُمۡ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَیۡهِ نَكِرَهُمۡ وَأَوۡجَسَ مِنۡهُمۡ خِیفَةࣰۚ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفۡ إِنَّاۤ أُرۡسِلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِ لُوطࣲ ۝٧٠

The Study Quran

Then when he saw that their hands reached not toward it, he conceived a fear of them. They said, “Fear not. Verily we have been sent unto the people of Lot.

falammā raā aydiyahum lā taṣilu ilayhi nakirahum wa-awjasa min'hum khīfatan qālū lā takhaf innā ur'sil'nā ilā qawmi lūṭi

وَٱمۡرَأَتُهُۥ قَاۤىِٕمَةࣱ فَضَحِكَتۡ فَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهَا بِإِسۡحَـٰقَ وَمِن وَرَاۤءِ إِسۡحَـٰقَ یَعۡقُوبَ ۝٧١

The Study Quran

And his wife was standing there and she laughed. Then We gave her glad tidings of Isaac, and after Isaac, of Jacob

wa-im'ra-atuhu qāimatun faḍaḥikat fabasharnāhā bi-is'ḥāqa wamin warāi is'ḥāqa yaʿqūb

قَالَتۡ یَـٰوَیۡلَتَىٰۤ ءَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا۠ عَجُوزࣱ وَهَـٰذَا بَعۡلِی شَیۡخًاۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَیۡءٌ عَجِیبࣱ ۝٧٢

The Study Quran

She said, “Oh, woe unto me! Shall I bear a child when I am an old woman, and this husband of mine is an old man? That would surely be an astounding thing.

qālat yāwaylatā a-alidu wa-anā ʿajūzun wahādhā baʿlī shaykhan inna hādhā lashayon ʿajību

قَالُوۤا۟ أَتَعۡجَبِینَ مِنۡ أَمۡرِ ٱللَّهِۖ رَحۡمَتُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَـٰتُهُۥ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡبَیۡتِۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَمِیدࣱ مَّجِیدࣱ ۝٧٣

The Study Quran

They said, “Do you marvel at the Command of God? The Mercy of God and His Blessings be upon you, O People of the House! Truly He is Praised, Glorious.

qālū ataʿjabīna min amri l-lahi raḥmatu l-lahi wabarakātuhu ʿalaykum ahla l-bayti innahu ḥamīdun majīdu

فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ عَنۡ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ٱلرَّوۡعُ وَجَاۤءَتۡهُ ٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰ یُجَـٰدِلُنَا فِی قَوۡمِ لُوطٍ ۝٧٤

The Study Quran

So when the awe had left Abraham and glad tidings had come unto him, he pleaded with Us concerning the people of Lot

falammā dhahaba ʿan ib'rāhīma l-rawʿu wajāathu l-bush'rā yujādilunā fī qawmi lūṭi

إِنَّ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ لَحَلِیمٌ أَوَّ ٰهࣱ مُّنِیبࣱ ۝٧٥

The Study Quran

Truly Abraham was clement, tenderhearted, penitent

inna ib'rāhīma laḥalīmun awwāhun munību

یَـٰۤإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ أَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡ هَـٰذَاۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ قَدۡ جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُ رَبِّكَۖ وَإِنَّهُمۡ ءَاتِیهِمۡ عَذَابٌ غَیۡرُ مَرۡدُودࣲ ۝٧٦

The Study Quran

“O Abraham! Turn away from this. Truly the Command of thy Lord has come, and surely a punishment that cannot be repelled comes upon them.

yāib'rāhīmu aʿriḍ ʿan hādhā innahu qad jāa amru rabbika wa-innahum ātīhim ʿadhābun ghayru mardūdi

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُنَا لُوطࣰا سِیۤءَ بِهِمۡ وَضَاقَ بِهِمۡ ذَرۡعࣰا وَقَالَ هَـٰذَا یَوۡمٌ عَصِیبࣱ ۝٧٧

The Study Quran

When Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed on their account, and felt himself powerless concerning them. And he said, “This is a terrible day!

walammā jāat rusulunā lūṭan sīa bihim waḍāqa bihim dharʿan waqāla hādhā yawmun ʿaṣību

وَجَاۤءَهُۥ قَوۡمُهُۥ یُهۡرَعُونَ إِلَیۡهِ وَمِن قَبۡلُ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ بَنَاتِی هُنَّ أَطۡهَرُ لَكُمۡۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخۡزُونِ فِی ضَیۡفِیۤۖ أَلَیۡسَ مِنكُمۡ رَجُلࣱ رَّشِیدࣱ ۝٧٨

The Study Quran

And his people came hurrying toward him, while earlier they had been committing evil deeds. He said, “O my people! These are my daughters; they are purer for you. So reverence God, and disgrace me not with regard to my guests. Is there not among you a man of sound judgment?

wajāahu qawmuhu yuh'raʿūna ilayhi wamin qablu kānū yaʿmalūna l-sayiāti qāla yāqawmi hāulāi banātī hunna aṭharu lakum fa-ittaqū l-laha walā tukh'zūni fī ḍayfī alaysa minkum rajulun rashīdu

قَالُوا۟ لَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتَ مَا لَنَا فِی بَنَاتِكَ مِنۡ حَقࣲّ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعۡلَمُ مَا نُرِیدُ ۝٧٩

The Study Quran

They said, “Certainly you know that we have no right to your daughters, and surely you know that which we desire.

qālū laqad ʿalim'ta mā lanā fī banātika min ḥaqqin wa-innaka lataʿlamu mā nurīd

قَالَ لَوۡ أَنَّ لِی بِكُمۡ قُوَّةً أَوۡ ءَاوِیۤ إِلَىٰ رُكۡنࣲ شَدِیدࣲ ۝٨٠

The Study Quran

He said, “Would that I had the strength [to resist] you, or could seek refuge in some mighty support!

qāla law anna lī bikum quwwatan aw āwī ilā ruk'nin shadīdi

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰلُوطُ إِنَّا رُسُلُ رَبِّكَ لَن یَصِلُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡكَۖ فَأَسۡرِ بِأَهۡلِكَ بِقِطۡعࣲ مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَلَا یَلۡتَفِتۡ مِنكُمۡ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَكَۖ إِنَّهُۥ مُصِیبُهَا مَاۤ أَصَابَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ مَوۡعِدَهُمُ ٱلصُّبۡحُۚ أَلَیۡسَ ٱلصُّبۡحُ بِقَرِیبࣲ ۝٨١

The Study Quran

They said, “O Lot! We are the envoys of thy Lord. They shall not reach thee. So set out with thy family during the night, and let none of you turn around, save thy wife; surely that which befalls them shall befall her. Indeed, the morning shall be their tryst. Is not the morning nigh?

qālū yālūṭu innā rusulu rabbika lan yaṣilū ilayka fa-asri bi-ahlika biqiṭ'ʿin mina al-layli walā yaltafit minkum aḥadun illā im'ra-ataka innahu muṣībuhā mā aṣābahum inna mawʿidahumu l-ṣub'ḥu alaysa l-ṣub'ḥu biqarībi

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُنَا جَعَلۡنَا عَـٰلِیَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهَا حِجَارَةࣰ مِّن سِجِّیلࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ ۝٨٢

The Study Quran

So when Our Command came, We made its uppermost to be its lowermost, and We rained down upon them stones of baked clay, one upon another

falammā jāa amrunā jaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhā ḥijāratan min sijjīlin manḍūdi

مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَۖ وَمَا هِیَ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ بِبَعِیدࣲ ۝٨٣

The Study Quran

marked by thy Lord; and they are never far from the wrongdoers

musawwamatan ʿinda rabbika wamā hiya mina l-ẓālimīna bibaʿīdi

8 History of Shu'aib

۞ وَإِلَىٰ مَدۡیَنَ أَخَاهُمۡ شُعَیۡبࣰاۚ قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۖ وَلَا تَنقُصُوا۟ ٱلۡمِكۡیَالَ وَٱلۡمِیزَانَۖ إِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰكُم بِخَیۡرࣲ وَإِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمࣲ مُّحِیطࣲ ۝٨٤

The Study Quran

And unto Midian, their brother Shu?ayb. He said, “O my people! Worship God! You have no god other than Him. Diminish not the measure and the balance. Truly I see you faring well, but I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day

wa-ilā madyana akhāhum shuʿayban qāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu walā tanquṣū l-mik'yāla wal-mīzāna innī arākum bikhayrin wa-innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin muḥīṭi

وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡمِكۡیَالَ وَٱلۡمِیزَانَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۖ وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٨٥

The Study Quran

O my people! Observe fully the measure and the balance with justice and diminish not people’s goods, and behave not wickedly upon the earth, working corruption

wayāqawmi awfū l-mik'yāla wal-mīzāna bil-qis'ṭi walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

بَقِیَّتُ ٱللَّهِ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَۚ وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ عَلَیۡكُم بِحَفِیظࣲ ۝٨٦

The Study Quran

The remnant from God is better for you, if you are believers, and I am not a keeper over you.

baqiyyatu l-lahi khayrun lakum in kuntum mu'minīna wamā anā ʿalaykum biḥafīẓi

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰشُعَیۡبُ أَصَلَوٰتُكَ تَأۡمُرُكَ أَن نَّتۡرُكَ مَا یَعۡبُدُ ءَابَاۤؤُنَاۤ أَوۡ أَن نَّفۡعَلَ فِیۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِنَا مَا نَشَـٰۤؤُا۟ۖ إِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ ٱلۡحَلِیمُ ٱلرَّشِیدُ ۝٨٧

The Study Quran

They said, “O Shu?ayb! Does your manner of praying require that we forsake that which our fathers worshipped, or that we should not do as we will with our wealth? Surely you are a man of forbearance and sound judgment.

qālū yāshuʿaybu aṣalatuka tamuruka an natruka mā yaʿbudu ābāunā aw an nafʿala fī amwālinā mā nashāu innaka la-anta l-ḥalīmu l-rashīd

قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَیِّنَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّی وَرَزَقَنِی مِنۡهُ رِزۡقًا حَسَنࣰاۚ وَمَاۤ أُرِیدُ أَنۡ أُخَالِفَكُمۡ إِلَىٰ مَاۤ أَنۡهَىٰكُمۡ عَنۡهُۚ إِنۡ أُرِیدُ إِلَّا ٱلۡإِصۡلَـٰحَ مَا ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُۚ وَمَا تَوۡفِیقِیۤ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِۚ عَلَیۡهِ تَوَكَّلۡتُ وَإِلَیۡهِ أُنِیبُ ۝٨٨

The Study Quran

He said, “O my people! What think you: if I stand upon a clear proof from my Lord, and He has provided me with goodly provision from Himself? I desire not to do behind your backs that which I forbid you. I desire naught but to set matters aright so far as I am able; but my success lies with God alone. In Him do I trust and unto Him do I turn

qāla yāqawmi ara-aytum in kuntu ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbī warazaqanī min'hu riz'qan ḥasanan wamā urīdu an ukhālifakum ilā mā anhākum ʿanhu in urīdu illā l-iṣ'lāḥa mā is'taṭaʿtu wamā tawfīqī illā bil-lahi ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-ilayhi unīb

وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ لَا یَجۡرِمَنَّكُمۡ شِقَاقِیۤ أَن یُصِیبَكُم مِّثۡلُ مَاۤ أَصَابَ قَوۡمَ نُوحٍ أَوۡ قَوۡمَ هُودٍ أَوۡ قَوۡمَ صَـٰلِحࣲۚ وَمَا قَوۡمُ لُوطࣲ مِّنكُم بِبَعِیدࣲ ۝٨٩

The Study Quran

O my people! Let not your dissension with me lead you into sin, such that there should befall you that which befell the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of ?ali?; and the people of Lot are not far from you

wayāqawmi lā yajrimannakum shiqāqī an yuṣībakum mith'lu mā aṣāba qawma nūḥin aw qawma hūdin aw qawma ṣāliḥin wamā qawmu lūṭin minkum bibaʿīdi

وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ تُوبُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِۚ إِنَّ رَبِّی رَحِیمࣱ وَدُودࣱ ۝٩٠

The Study Quran

And seek forgiveness from your Lord; then turn unto Him in repentance. Truly my Lord is Merciful, Loving.

wa-is'taghfirū rabbakum thumma tūbū ilayhi inna rabbī raḥīmun wadūdu

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰشُعَیۡبُ مَا نَفۡقَهُ كَثِیرࣰا مِّمَّا تَقُولُ وَإِنَّا لَنَرَىٰكَ فِینَا ضَعِیفࣰاۖ وَلَوۡلَا رَهۡطُكَ لَرَجَمۡنَـٰكَۖ وَمَاۤ أَنتَ عَلَیۡنَا بِعَزِیزࣲ ۝٩١

The Study Quran

They said, “O Shu?ayb! We do not comprehend much of what you say, and verily we consider you to be weak among us. And were it not for your clan, we would surely stone you, for you have no power over us.

qālū yāshuʿaybu mā nafqahu kathīran mimmā taqūlu wa-innā lanarāka fīnā ḍaʿīfan walawlā rahṭuka larajamnāka wamā anta ʿalaynā biʿazīzi

قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَرَهۡطِیۤ أَعَزُّ عَلَیۡكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱتَّخَذۡتُمُوهُ وَرَاۤءَكُمۡ ظِهۡرِیًّاۖ إِنَّ رَبِّی بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ مُحِیطࣱ ۝٩٢

The Study Quran

He said, “O my people! Is my clan mightier over you than God? Yet, you would put Him behind you with disregard. Surely my Lord encompasses whatsoever you do

qāla yāqawmi arahṭī aʿazzu ʿalaykum mina l-lahi wa-ittakhadhtumūhu warāakum ẓih'riyyan inna rabbī bimā taʿmalūna muḥīṭu

وَیَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡمَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمۡ إِنِّی عَـٰمِلࣱۖ سَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ مَن یَأۡتِیهِ عَذَابࣱ یُخۡزِیهِ وَمَنۡ هُوَ كَـٰذِبࣱۖ وَٱرۡتَقِبُوۤا۟ إِنِّی مَعَكُمۡ رَقِیبࣱ ۝٩٣

The Study Quran

O my people! Act according to your position; I, too, am acting. Soon you shall know upon whom there comes a punishment that disgraces him, and who is a liar. So keep watch! I, too, am among you watching.

wayāqawmi iʿ'malū ʿalā makānatikum innī ʿāmilun sawfa taʿlamūna man yatīhi ʿadhābun yukh'zīhi waman huwa kādhibun wa-ir'taqibū innī maʿakum raqību

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُنَا نَجَّیۡنَا شُعَیۡبࣰا وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحۡمَةࣲ مِّنَّا وَأَخَذَتِ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ فِی دِیَـٰرِهِمۡ جَـٰثِمِینَ ۝٩٤

The Study Quran

And when Our Command came, We saved Shu?ayb and those who believed with him, through a Mercy from Us. And the Cry seized those who did wrong, and morning found them lying lifeless in their abode

walammā jāa amrunā najjaynā shuʿayban wa-alladhīna āmanū maʿahu biraḥmatin minnā wa-akhadhati alladhīna ẓalamū l-ṣayḥatu fa-aṣbaḥū fī diyārihim jāthimīn

كَأَن لَّمۡ یَغۡنَوۡا۟ فِیهَاۤۗ أَلَا بُعۡدࣰا لِّمَدۡیَنَ كَمَا بَعِدَتۡ ثَمُودُ ۝٩٥

The Study Quran

as though they had never dwelt there. Behold! Away with Midian, just as Thamud was done away

ka-an lam yaghnaw fīhā alā buʿ'dan limadyana kamā baʿidat thamūd

9 Iniquitous and Righteous

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَسُلۡطَـٰنࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٦

The Study Quran

And indeed We sent Moses with Our signs and a manifest authorit

walaqad arsalnā mūsā biāyātinā wasul'ṭānin mubīni

إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ فَٱتَّبَعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۖ وَمَاۤ أَمۡرُ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِرَشِیدࣲ ۝٩٧

The Study Quran

unto Pharaoh and his notables. But they followed the command of Pharaoh, and the command of Pharaoh was not sound

ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi fa-ittabaʿū amra fir'ʿawna wamā amru fir'ʿawna birashīdi

یَقۡدُمُ قَوۡمَهُۥ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فَأَوۡرَدَهُمُ ٱلنَّارَۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡوِرۡدُ ٱلۡمَوۡرُودُ ۝٩٨

The Study Quran

He shall go before his people on the Day of Resurrection and lead them to the Fire. Evil indeed is the watering place to which they are led

yaqdumu qawmahu yawma l-qiyāmati fa-awradahumu l-nāra wabi'sa l-wir'du l-mawrūd

وَأُتۡبِعُوا۟ فِی هَـٰذِهِۦ لَعۡنَةࣰ وَیَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ بِئۡسَ ٱلرِّفۡدُ ٱلۡمَرۡفُودُ ۝٩٩

The Study Quran

And they were pursued in this [world] by a curse, and [shall be] on the Day of Resurrection. Evil indeed is the gift that will be offered them

wa-ut'biʿū fī hādhihi laʿnatan wayawma l-qiyāmati bi'sa l-rif'du l-marfūd

ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَاۤءِ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّهُۥ عَلَیۡكَۖ مِنۡهَا قَاۤىِٕمࣱ وَحَصِیدࣱ ۝١٠٠

The Study Quran

These are among the stories We have recounted unto thee of the towns. Among them are some that remain and some that have been mown down

dhālika min anbāi l-qurā naquṣṣuhu ʿalayka min'hā qāimun waḥaṣīdu

وَمَا ظَلَمۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡۖ فَمَاۤ أَغۡنَتۡ عَنۡهُمۡ ءَالِهَتُهُمُ ٱلَّتِی یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَیۡءࣲ لَّمَّا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُ رَبِّكَۖ وَمَا زَادُوهُمۡ غَیۡرَ تَتۡبِیبࣲ ۝١٠١

The Study Quran

We wronged them not, but they wronged themselves. And their gods whom they called upon apart from God did not avail them in the least when the Command of thy Lord came, and they increased them in naught but ruin

wamā ẓalamnāhum walākin ẓalamū anfusahum famā aghnat ʿanhum ālihatuhumu allatī yadʿūna min dūni l-lahi min shayin lammā jāa amru rabbika wamā zādūhum ghayra tatbībi

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَخۡذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَاۤ أَخَذَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ وَهِیَ ظَـٰلِمَةٌۚ إِنَّ أَخۡذَهُۥۤ أَلِیمࣱ شَدِیدٌ ۝١٠٢

The Study Quran

Such is the seizing of thy Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. Surely His seizing is painful, severe

wakadhālika akhdhu rabbika idhā akhadha l-qurā wahiya ẓālimatun inna akhdhahu alīmun shadīdu

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّمَنۡ خَافَ عَذَابَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمࣱ مَّجۡمُوعࣱ لَّهُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمࣱ مَّشۡهُودࣱ ۝١٠٣

The Study Quran

Truly in that is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day on which mankind shall be gathered together, and that is a Day that shall be witnessed

inna fī dhālika laāyatan liman khāfa ʿadhāba l-ākhirati dhālika yawmun majmūʿun lahu l-nāsu wadhālika yawmun mashhūdu

وَمَا نُؤَخِّرُهُۥۤ إِلَّا لِأَجَلࣲ مَّعۡدُودࣲ ۝١٠٤

The Study Quran

And We delay it not, save for a limited term

wamā nu-akhiruhu illā li-ajalin maʿdūdi

یَوۡمَ یَأۡتِ لَا تَكَلَّمُ نَفۡسٌ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِهِۦۚ فَمِنۡهُمۡ شَقِیࣱّ وَسَعِیدࣱ ۝١٠٥

The Study Quran

On the Day it comes, no soul shall speak save by His Leave. Among them shall be the wretched and the felicitous

yawma yati lā takallamu nafsun illā bi-idh'nihi famin'hum shaqiyyun wasaʿīdu

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ شَقُوا۟ فَفِی ٱلنَّارِ لَهُمۡ فِیهَا زَفِیرࣱ وَشَهِیقٌ ۝١٠٦

The Study Quran

As for those who are wretched, they shall be in the Fire, wherein there shall be for them groaning and wailing

fa-ammā alladhīna shaqū fafī l-nāri lahum fīhā zafīrun washahīqu

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا مَا دَامَتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ إِلَّا مَا شَاۤءَ رَبُّكَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ فَعَّالࣱ لِّمَا یُرِیدُ ۝١٠٧

The Study Quran

abiding therein for so long as the heavens and the earth endure, save as thy Lord wills. Surely thy Lord does whatsoever He wills

khālidīna fīhā mā dāmati l-samāwātu wal-arḍu illā mā shāa rabbuka inna rabbaka faʿʿālun limā yurīd

۞ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ سُعِدُوا۟ فَفِی ٱلۡجَنَّةِ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا مَا دَامَتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ إِلَّا مَا شَاۤءَ رَبُّكَۖ عَطَاۤءً غَیۡرَ مَجۡذُوذࣲ ۝١٠٨

The Study Quran

And as for those who are felicitous, they shall be in the Garden, abiding therein for so long as the heavens and the earth endure, save as thy Lord wills—a gift unfailing

wa-ammā alladhīna suʿidū fafī l-janati khālidīna fīhā mā dāmati l-samāwātu wal-arḍu illā mā shāa rabbuka ʿaṭāan ghayra majdhūdhi

فَلَا تَكُ فِی مِرۡیَةࣲ مِّمَّا یَعۡبُدُ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِۚ مَا یَعۡبُدُونَ إِلَّا كَمَا یَعۡبُدُ ءَابَاۤؤُهُم مِّن قَبۡلُۚ وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمۡ نَصِیبَهُمۡ غَیۡرَ مَنقُوصࣲ ۝١٠٩

The Study Quran

So be not in doubt concerning that which these [people] worship; they worship only as their fathers worshipped before. We shall surely give them their share, undiminished

falā taku fī mir'yatin mimmā yaʿbudu hāulāi mā yaʿbudūna illā kamā yaʿbudu ābāuhum min qablu wa-innā lamuwaffūhum naṣībahum ghayra manqūṣi

10 Believers comforted

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ فَٱخۡتُلِفَ فِیهِۚ وَلَوۡلَا كَلِمَةࣱ سَبَقَتۡ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِیَ بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَفِی شَكࣲّ مِّنۡهُ مُرِیبࣲ ۝١١٠

The Study Quran

Indeed, We gave unto Moses the Book; then difference arose regarding it. And were it not for a Word that had preceded from thy Lord, judgment would have been rendered between them. Yet, truly they are confounded by doubt regarding it

walaqad ātaynā mūsā l-kitāba fa-ukh'tulifa fīhi walawlā kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika laquḍiya baynahum wa-innahum lafī shakkin min'hu murībi

وَإِنَّ كُلࣰّا لَّمَّا لَیُوَفِّیَنَّهُمۡ رَبُّكَ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا یَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝١١١

The Study Quran

Surely for each, thy Lord shall pay them in full for their deeds. Truly He is Aware of what they do

wa-inna kullan lammā layuwaffiyannahum rabbuka aʿmālahum innahu bimā yaʿmalūna khabīru

فَٱسۡتَقِمۡ كَمَاۤ أُمِرۡتَ وَمَن تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطۡغَوۡا۟ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِیرࣱ ۝١١٢

The Study Quran

So be steadfast, as thou hast been commanded—and those who turn in repentance along with you—and be not rebellious. Truly He sees whatsoever you do

fa-is'taqim kamā umir'ta waman tāba maʿaka walā taṭghaw innahu bimā taʿmalūna baṣīru

وَلَا تَرۡكَنُوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ فَتَمَسَّكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِنۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ ۝١١٣

The Study Quran

And incline not toward the wrongdoers, lest the Fire should touch you—and you will have no protector apart from God. Thereafter you will not be helped

walā tarkanū ilā alladhīna ẓalamū fatamassakumu l-nāru wamā lakum min dūni l-lahi min awliyāa thumma lā tunṣarūn

وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ طَرَفَیِ ٱلنَّهَارِ وَزُلَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡحَسَنَـٰتِ یُذۡهِبۡنَ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلذَّ ٰكِرِینَ ۝١١٤

The Study Quran

And perform the prayer at the two ends of the day and in the early hours of the night. Truly good deeds remove those that are evil. This is a reminder for those who remember

wa-aqimi l-ṣalata ṭarafayi l-nahāri wazulafan mina al-layli inna l-ḥasanāti yudh'hib'na l-sayiāti dhālika dhik'rā lildhākirīn

وَٱصۡبِرۡ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُضِیعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١١٥

The Study Quran

And be thou patient. Truly God neglects not the reward of the virtuous

wa-iṣ'bir fa-inna l-laha lā yuḍīʿu ajra l-muḥ'sinīn

فَلَوۡلَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرُونِ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ أُو۟لُوا۟ بَقِیَّةࣲ یَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡفَسَادِ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰا مِّمَّنۡ أَنجَیۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡۗ وَٱتَّبَعَ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مَاۤ أُتۡرِفُوا۟ فِیهِ وَكَانُوا۟ مُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١١٦

The Study Quran

So why were there not among the generations before you those possessing merit, who would forbid corruption upon the earth, other than a few of those whom We saved among them? Those who did wrong pursued the luxuries they had been given, and they were guilty

falawlā kāna mina l-qurūni min qablikum ulū baqiyyatin yanhawna ʿani l-fasādi fī l-arḍi illā qalīlan mimman anjaynā min'hum wa-ittabaʿa alladhīna ẓalamū mā ut'rifū fīhi wakānū muj'rimīn

وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ لِیُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ بِظُلۡمࣲ وَأَهۡلُهَا مُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١١٧

The Study Quran

And thy Lord would never destroy the towns unjustly, while their people were reforming

wamā kāna rabbuka liyuh'lika l-qurā biẓul'min wa-ahluhā muṣ'liḥūn

وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ ٱلنَّاسَ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰۖ وَلَا یَزَالُونَ مُخۡتَلِفِینَ ۝١١٨

The Study Quran

And had thy Lord willed, He would have made mankind one community. But they cease not to differ

walaw shāa rabbuka lajaʿala l-nāsa ummatan wāḥidatan walā yazālūna mukh'talifīn

إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ رَبُّكَۚ وَلِذَ ٰلِكَ خَلَقَهُمۡۗ وَتَمَّتۡ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ لَأَمۡلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١١٩

The Study Quran

save those upon whom thy Lord has Mercy—and for this He created them. And the Word of thy Lord is fulfilled: “I shall surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together!

illā man raḥima rabbuka walidhālika khalaqahum watammat kalimatu rabbika la-amla-anna jahannama mina l-jinati wal-nāsi ajmaʿīn

وَكُلࣰّا نَّقُصُّ عَلَیۡكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَاۤءِ ٱلرُّسُلِ مَا نُثَبِّتُ بِهِۦ فُؤَادَكَۚ وَجَاۤءَكَ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَمَوۡعِظَةࣱ وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢٠

The Study Quran

All that We recount unto thee of the stories of the messengers is that whereby We make firm thine heart. And herein there has come unto thee the Truth, and an exhortation and a reminder for the believers

wakullan naquṣṣu ʿalayka min anbāi l-rusuli mā nuthabbitu bihi fuādaka wajāaka fī hādhihi l-ḥaqu wamawʿiẓatun wadhik'rā lil'mu'minīn

وَقُل لِّلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ٱعۡمَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمۡ إِنَّا عَـٰمِلُونَ ۝١٢١

The Study Quran

And say unto those who believe not, “Act according to your position; we, too, are acting

waqul lilladhīna lā yu'minūna iʿ'malū ʿalā makānatikum innā ʿāmilūn

وَٱنتَظِرُوۤا۟ إِنَّا مُنتَظِرُونَ ۝١٢٢

The Study Quran

And wait! We, too, are waiting.

wa-intaẓirū innā muntaẓirūn

وَلِلَّهِ غَیۡبُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِلَیۡهِ یُرۡجَعُ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ كُلُّهُۥ فَٱعۡبُدۡهُ وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَیۡهِۚ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢٣

The Study Quran

Unto God belongs the Unseen in the heavens and on the earth, and unto Him are all matters returned. So worship Him, and trust in Him. And thy Lord is not heedless of that which you do

walillahi ghaybu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa-ilayhi yur'jaʿu l-amru kulluhu fa-uʿ'bud'hu watawakkal ʿalayhi wamā rabbuka bighāfilin ʿammā taʿmalūn
