1 Success of the Faithful

۞ قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١

Prosperous indeed are the believers

qad aflaḥa l-mu'minūn

ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ فِی صَلَاتِهِمۡ خَـٰشِعُونَ ۝٢

They are in their Prayer humble and fully submissive (being overwhelmed by the awe and majesty of God)

alladhīna hum fī ṣalātihim khāshiʿūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَنِ ٱللَّغۡوِ مُعۡرِضُونَ ۝٣

They always turn away from and avoid whatever is vain and frivolous

wa-alladhīna hum ʿani l-laghwi muʿ'riḍūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِلزَّكَوٰةِ فَـٰعِلُونَ ۝٤

They are in a constant effort to give alms and purify their own selves and wealth

wa-alladhīna hum lilzzakati fāʿilūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَـٰفِظُونَ ۝٥

They strictly guard their private parts, and their chastity and modesty

wa-alladhīna hum lifurūjihim ḥāfiẓūn

إِلَّا عَلَىٰۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَیۡرُ مَلُومِینَ ۝٦

Save from their spouses or (as a permission for men) those (bondsmaids) whom their right hands possess, for with regard to them they are free from blame

illā ʿalā azwājihim aw mā malakat aymānuhum fa-innahum ghayru malūmīn

فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَاۤءَ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ ۝٧

But whoever seeks beyond that, such are they who exceed the bounds (set by God)

famani ib'taghā warāa dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-ʿādūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَ ٰعُونَ ۝٨

They are faithful and true to their trusts (which either God or society or an individual places in their charge) and to their pledges (between them and God or other persons or society)

wa-alladhīna hum li-amānātihim waʿahdihim rāʿūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَوَ ٰتِهِمۡ یُحَافِظُونَ ۝٩

They are ever mindful guardians of their Prayers (including all the rites of which they are constituted)

wa-alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalawātihim yuḥāfiẓūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡوَ ٰرِثُونَ ۝١٠

Those (illustrious ones) are the inheritors

ulāika humu l-wārithūn

ٱلَّذِینَ یَرِثُونَ ٱلۡفِرۡدَوۡسَ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١١

Who will inherit the highest floor of Paradise. Therein they will abide forever

alladhīna yarithūna l-fir'dawsa hum fīhā khālidūn

وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن سُلَـٰلَةࣲ مِّن طِینࣲ ۝١٢

We created humankind (in the very beginning) from a specially sifted extract of clay

walaqad khalaqnā l-insāna min sulālatin min ṭīni

ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ نُطۡفَةࣰ فِی قَرَارࣲ مَّكِینࣲ ۝١٣

Then We have made it into a fertilized ovum in a safe lodging

thumma jaʿalnāhu nuṭ'fatan fī qarārin makīni

ثُمَّ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلنُّطۡفَةَ عَلَقَةࣰ فَخَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡعَلَقَةَ مُضۡغَةࣰ فَخَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمُضۡغَةَ عِظَـٰمࣰا فَكَسَوۡنَا ٱلۡعِظَـٰمَ لَحۡمࣰا ثُمَّ أَنشَأۡنَـٰهُ خَلۡقًا ءَاخَرَۚ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ أَحۡسَنُ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقِینَ ۝١٤

Then We have created of the fertilized ovum a clot clinging (to the womb wall), and (afterwards in sequence) We have created of the clinging clot a (chew of) lump, and We have created of (a chew of) lump bones, and We have clothed the bones in flesh. Then We have caused it to grow into another creation. So Blessed and Supreme is God, the Creator Who creates everything in the best and most appropriate form and has the ultimate rank of creativity

thumma khalaqnā l-nuṭ'fata ʿalaqatan fakhalaqnā l-ʿalaqata muḍ'ghatan fakhalaqnā l-muḍ'ghata ʿiẓāman fakasawnā l-ʿiẓāma laḥman thumma anshanāhu khalqan ākhara fatabāraka l-lahu aḥsanu l-khāliqīn

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُم بَعۡدَ ذَ ٰلِكَ لَمَیِّتُونَ ۝١٥

Then, after all this, you are bound to die

thumma innakum baʿda dhālika lamayyitūn

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ تُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٦

Thereafter, you will, on the Day of Resurrection, certainly be raised up

thumma innakum yawma l-qiyāmati tub'ʿathūn

وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا فَوۡقَكُمۡ سَبۡعَ طَرَاۤىِٕقَ وَمَا كُنَّا عَنِ ٱلۡخَلۡقِ غَـٰفِلِینَ ۝١٧

Indeed, We have created above you seven heavens, one layer upon the other, and seven paths (for angels to move, God’s commands to descend, and acts of conscious beings to ascend, along). Never are We unaware of creation and what We create (with all aspects of their lives)

walaqad khalaqnā fawqakum sabʿa ṭarāiqa wamā kunnā ʿani l-khalqi ghāfilīn

وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءَۢ بِقَدَرࣲ فَأَسۡكَنَّـٰهُ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰ ذَهَابِۭ بِهِۦ لَقَـٰدِرُونَ ۝١٨

We send down from the sky water with a measure set by Us, and lodge it in the earth. We are most certainly able to withdraw it

wa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan biqadarin fa-askannāhu fī l-arḍi wa-innā ʿalā dhahābin bihi laqādirūn

فَأَنشَأۡنَا لَكُم بِهِۦ جَنَّـٰتࣲ مِّن نَّخِیلࣲ وَأَعۡنَـٰبࣲ لَّكُمۡ فِیهَا فَوَ ٰكِهُ كَثِیرَةࣱ وَمِنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝١٩

And with it We cause to grow for you gardens of date-palms and vines, wherein are abundant, diverse fruits for you, and from which you eat and obtain some of your livelihood

fa-anshanā lakum bihi jannātin min nakhīlin wa-aʿnābin lakum fīhā fawākihu kathīratun wamin'hā takulūn

وَشَجَرَةࣰ تَخۡرُجُ مِن طُورِ سَیۡنَاۤءَ تَنۢبُتُ بِٱلدُّهۡنِ وَصِبۡغࣲ لِّلۡءَاكِلِینَ ۝٢٠

As well as a tree that grows from and in the lands around Mount Sinai, yielding oil and a kind of relish for all to eat

washajaratan takhruju min ṭūri saynāa tanbutu bil-duh'ni waṣib'ghin lil'ākilīn

وَإِنَّ لَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ لَعِبۡرَةࣰۖ نُّسۡقِیكُم مِّمَّا فِی بُطُونِهَا وَلَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَنَـٰفِعُ كَثِیرَةࣱ وَمِنۡهَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٢١

And in the cattle (feeding on the grass God brings forth with the water He sends down) there is a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that (milk) which is within their bodies; and you have many other benefits in them, and from them you obtain food

wa-inna lakum fī l-anʿāmi laʿib'ratan nus'qīkum mimmā fī buṭūnihā walakum fīhā manāfiʿu kathīratun wamin'hā takulūn

وَعَلَیۡهَا وَعَلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ تُحۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٢

And on them (on land) and on the ships (in the sea) you are carried

waʿalayhā waʿalā l-ful'ki tuḥ'malūn

2 Noah

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ فَقَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۤۚ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝٢٣

Indeed, We sent Noah to his people as Messenger, and he said: "O my people! Worship God alone: you have no deity other than Him. Will you not, then, keep from disobedience to Him in reverence for Him and piety?"

walaqad arsalnā nūḥan ilā qawmihi faqāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu afalā tattaqūn

فَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلَؤُا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوۡمِهِۦ مَا هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ یُرِیدُ أَن یَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَنزَلَ مَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰ مَّا سَمِعۡنَا بِهَـٰذَا فِیۤ ءَابَاۤىِٕنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٤

The leading ones who disbelieved from among his people reacted, saying (among themselves and to each other): "This is but a mortal like you. He only wishes to gain superiority over you. Had God willed (to send us a Messenger to convey His Message), He would surely have sent down angels (to communicate His Message). Further, we have never heard of anything like this in the case of our forefathers of old

faqāla l-mala-u alladhīna kafarū min qawmihi mā hādhā illā basharun mith'lukum yurīdu an yatafaḍḍala ʿalaykum walaw shāa l-lahu la-anzala malāikatan mā samiʿ'nā bihādhā fī ābāinā l-awalīn

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا رَجُلُۢ بِهِۦ جِنَّةࣱ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝٢٥

"He is but a man in whom there is madness, so watch him for a while (to see) whether he will recover."

in huwa illā rajulun bihi jinnatun fatarabbaṣū bihi ḥattā ḥīni

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنصُرۡنِی بِمَا كَذَّبُونِ ۝٢٦

Noah prayed: "My Lord, help me because they have denied me!"

qāla rabbi unṣur'nī bimā kadhabūn

فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡهِ أَنِ ٱصۡنَعِ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ بِأَعۡیُنِنَا وَوَحۡیِنَا فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ فَٱسۡلُكۡ فِیهَا مِن كُلࣲّ زَوۡجَیۡنِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِ وَأَهۡلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلۡقَوۡلُ مِنۡهُمۡۖ وَلَا تُخَـٰطِبۡنِی فِی ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ إِنَّهُم مُّغۡرَقُونَ ۝٢٧

Thereupon We revealed to him: "Build the Ark (which We have described to you) under Our eyes and in accordance with Our instructions to be revealed (to you). Then finally, when Our command comes to pass and the boiler starts boiling over, take on board a pair of each kind of animal, as well as your family, except those of them against whom Our sentence (of destruction) has already been passed. Do not plead with Me for those people who have persisted in wrongdoing. They are bound to be drowned

fa-awḥaynā ilayhi ani iṣ'naʿi l-ful'ka bi-aʿyuninā wawaḥyinā fa-idhā jāa amrunā wafāra l-tanūru fa-us'luk fīhā min kullin zawjayni ith'nayni wa-ahlaka illā man sabaqa ʿalayhi l-qawlu min'hum walā tukhāṭib'nī fī alladhīna ẓalamū innahum mugh'raqūn

فَإِذَا ٱسۡتَوَیۡتَ أَنتَ وَمَن مَّعَكَ عَلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ فَقُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِی نَجَّىٰنَا مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٨

"Then, when you are seated in the Ark, you and those who are with you, say: ‘All praise and gratitude are for God, Who has saved us from the wrongdoing people.’

fa-idhā is'tawayta anta waman maʿaka ʿalā l-ful'ki faquli l-ḥamdu lillahi alladhī najjānā mina l-qawmi l-ẓālimīn

وَقُل رَّبِّ أَنزِلۡنِی مُنزَلࣰا مُّبَارَكࣰا وَأَنتَ خَیۡرُ ٱلۡمُنزِلِینَ ۝٢٩

"And pray: ‘My Lord, let me land in a blessed place (in peace and safety and) with blessings from You. You are the Best to cause people to land in peace and safety’."

waqul rabbi anzil'nī munzalan mubārakan wa-anta khayru l-munzilīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ وَإِن كُنَّا لَمُبۡتَلِینَ ۝٣٠

Surely in that (exemplary story) are signs (manifesting the truth); and for sure We are ever trying (people)

inna fī dhālika laāyātin wa-in kunnā lamub'talīn

ثُمَّ أَنشَأۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ قَرۡنًا ءَاخَرِینَ ۝٣١

Then, after them, We brought forth another generation

thumma anshanā min baʿdihim qarnan ākharīn

فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا فِیهِمۡ رَسُولࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَـٰهٍ غَیۡرُهُۥۤۚ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝٣٢

In time, We sent among them a Messenger from among themselves (with the message): "Worship God alone; you have no deity other than Him. Will you not, then, keep from disobedience to Him in reverence for Him and piety?"

fa-arsalnā fīhim rasūlan min'hum ani uʿ'budū l-laha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruhu afalā tattaqūn

3 Prophets after Noah

وَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِن قَوۡمِهِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِلِقَاۤءِ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ وَأَتۡرَفۡنَـٰهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا مَا هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ یَأۡكُلُ مِمَّا تَأۡكُلُونَ مِنۡهُ وَیَشۡرَبُ مِمَّا تَشۡرَبُونَ ۝٣٣

The leading ones from among his people – who disbelieved, and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and to whom We granted ease and comfort in the life of this world – said: "This is but a mortal like you, eating of what you eat of, and drinking of what you drink of

waqāla l-mala-u min qawmihi alladhīna kafarū wakadhabū biliqāi l-ākhirati wa-atrafnāhum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā mā hādhā illā basharun mith'lukum yakulu mimmā takulūna min'hu wayashrabu mimmā tashrabūn

وَلَىِٕنۡ أَطَعۡتُم بَشَرࣰا مِّثۡلَكُمۡ إِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٣٤

"If you obey a mortal like yourselves, then you will surely be the losers

wala-in aṭaʿtum basharan mith'lakum innakum idhan lakhāsirūn

أَیَعِدُكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ إِذَا مِتُّمۡ وَكُنتُمۡ تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَنَّكُم مُّخۡرَجُونَ ۝٣٥

"Does he promise you that, after you have died and become mere dust and bones, you will be brought forth (to a new life)

ayaʿidukum annakum idhā mittum wakuntum turāban waʿiẓāman annakum mukh'rajūn

۞ هَیۡهَاتَ هَیۡهَاتَ لِمَا تُوعَدُونَ ۝٣٦

"Far-fetched, utterly far-fetched, is what you are promised

hayhāta hayhāta limā tūʿadūn

إِنۡ هِیَ إِلَّا حَیَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنۡیَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحۡیَا وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَبۡعُوثِینَ ۝٣٧

"There is no life beyond our present, worldly life. Some of us die (while others are born,) and so life continues; and we are not raised from the dead

in hiya illā ḥayātunā l-dun'yā namūtu wanaḥyā wamā naḥnu bimabʿūthīn

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبࣰا وَمَا نَحۡنُ لَهُۥ بِمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣٨

"He is nothing but a man, fabricating falsehood in attribution to God; and we are not (going to) to believe in him."

in huwa illā rajulun if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban wamā naḥnu lahu bimu'minīn

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنصُرۡنِی بِمَا كَذَّبُونِ ۝٣٩

Eventually, the Messenger invoked: "My Lord, help me because they deny me!"

qāla rabbi unṣur'nī bimā kadhabūn

قَالَ عَمَّا قَلِیلࣲ لَّیُصۡبِحُنَّ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝٤٠

(God) said: "In a little while, they are sure to be regretful."

qāla ʿammā qalīlin layuṣ'biḥunna nādimīn

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ بِٱلۡحَقِّ فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ غُثَاۤءࣰۚ فَبُعۡدࣰا لِّلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٤١

So in consequence, the awful blast seized them as a judgment of God rightly fitted to their deserts, and We made them like the waste of dead plants carried by a flood and left on the coast once the water recedes. So away with the wrongdoing people

fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu bil-ḥaqi fajaʿalnāhum ghuthāan fabuʿ'dan lil'qawmi l-ẓālimīn

ثُمَّ أَنشَأۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ قُرُونًا ءَاخَرِینَ ۝٤٢

Then, after them, We brought forth new generations (in succession)

thumma anshanā min baʿdihim qurūnan ākharīn

مَا تَسۡبِقُ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا یَسۡتَءۡخِرُونَ ۝٤٣

(What happened to all those generations proves that) no community can ever hasten on the end of its term, nor can they delay it (once it has been decided by God because of their beliefs and life-styles)

mā tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahā wamā yastakhirūn

ثُمَّ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رُسُلَنَا تَتۡرَاۖ كُلَّ مَا جَاۤءَ أُمَّةࣰ رَّسُولُهَا كَذَّبُوهُۖ فَأَتۡبَعۡنَا بَعۡضَهُم بَعۡضࣰا وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ أَحَادِیثَۚ فَبُعۡدࣰا لِّقَوۡمࣲ لَّا یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٤٤

We sent Our Messengers one after the other (each to a generation). Whenever their Messenger came to a community, they denied him, and in consequence We caused each community to follow the other to its doom, and reduced them to mere tales of the past. So away with a people who do not believe

thumma arsalnā rusulanā tatrā kulla mā jāa ummatan rasūluhā kadhabūhu fa-atbaʿnā baʿḍahum baʿḍan wajaʿalnāhum aḥādītha fabuʿ'dan liqawmin lā yu'minūn

ثُمَّ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَأَخَاهُ هَـٰرُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَسُلۡطَـٰنࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٤٥

After all those Messengers (sent to the past generations that are now all extinct,) We sent Moses and his brother Aaron as Messengers with Our clear signs (miracles to support them) and a manifest authority (from Us)

thumma arsalnā mūsā wa-akhāhu hārūna biāyātinā wasul'ṭānin mubīni

إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوۡمًا عَالِینَ ۝٤٦

To the Pharaoh and his chiefs. But they grew arrogant in the face of them, and demonstrated that they were a haughty, self-exalting people

ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi fa-is'takbarū wakānū qawman ʿālīn

فَقَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لِبَشَرَیۡنِ مِثۡلِنَا وَقَوۡمُهُمَا لَنَا عَـٰبِدُونَ ۝٤٧

They said: "Shall we believe in two mortals like ourselves, when their people {the people of Moses and Aaron) are serving us in humility and obedience?"

faqālū anu'minu libasharayni mith'linā waqawmuhumā lanā ʿābidūn

فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَكَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُهۡلَكِینَ ۝٤٨

They denied them, and they too eventually became of those who were destroyed

fakadhabūhumā fakānū mina l-muh'lakīn

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَهۡتَدُونَ ۝٤٩

(After their destruction) We granted Moses the Book so that his people might follow the right way

walaqad ātaynā mūsā l-kitāba laʿallahum yahtadūn

وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ وَأُمَّهُۥۤ ءَایَةࣰ وَءَاوَیۡنَـٰهُمَاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبۡوَةࣲ ذَاتِ قَرَارࣲ وَمَعِینࣲ ۝٥٠

We made the Son of Mary and his mother a miraculous sign (of Our Lordship and Power), and We provided for them refuge on a lofty ground of comfort and security with a (water) spring

wajaʿalnā ib'na maryama wa-ummahu āyatan waāwaynāhumā ilā rabwatin dhāti qarārin wamaʿīni

4 Higher Values of Life

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلرُّسُلُ كُلُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلطَّیِّبَـٰتِ وَٱعۡمَلُوا۟ صَـٰلِحًاۖ إِنِّی بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٥١

O you Messengers! Partake of (God’s) pure and wholesome bounties, and always act righteously. I have full knowledge of all that you do

yāayyuhā l-rusulu kulū mina l-ṭayibāti wa-iʿ'malū ṣāliḥan innī bimā taʿmalūna ʿalīmu

وَإِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦۤ أُمَّتُكُمۡ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ وَأَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمۡ فَٱتَّقُونِ ۝٥٢

This community of yours is one single community of the same faith, and I am your Lord (Who creates, sustains, and protects you), so hold Me alone in fear and keep your duty to Me in piety

wa-inna hādhihi ummatukum ummatan wāḥidatan wa-anā rabbukum fa-ittaqūn

فَتَقَطَّعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَهُم بَیۡنَهُمۡ زُبُرࣰاۖ كُلُّ حِزۡبِۭ بِمَا لَدَیۡهِمۡ فَرِحُونَ ۝٥٣

But people, having broken up into groups, differed among themselves as regards the Religion, each group proudly rejoicing in the portion they have

fataqaṭṭaʿū amrahum baynahum zuburan kullu ḥiz'bin bimā ladayhim fariḥūn

فَذَرۡهُمۡ فِی غَمۡرَتِهِمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینٍ ۝٥٤

So (if they, despite all the evidence We have put forth in support of the truth of the Message that you, O Messenger, are conveying to them, still refuse to accept it), leave them alone, immersed in their ignorance and heedlessness until an appointed time

fadharhum fī ghamratihim ḥattā ḥīni

أَیَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُم بِهِۦ مِن مَّالࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝٥٥

Do they think that by all the wealth and children We provide for them

ayaḥsabūna annamā numidduhum bihi min mālin wabanīn

نُسَارِعُ لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡخَیۡرَ ٰتِۚ بَل لَّا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٥٦

We but hasten to lavish on them all kinds of good? No, but they do not perceive (the reality of the matter)

nusāriʿu lahum fī l-khayrāti bal lā yashʿurūn

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ هُم مِّنۡ خَشۡیَةِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ ۝٥٧

While as for those who live in awe because of deep reverence for their Lord

inna alladhīna hum min khashyati rabbihim mush'fiqūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥٨

Who have renewed, ever-strengthening faith in their Lord’s signs and Revelations

wa-alladhīna hum biāyāti rabbihim yu'minūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ هُم بِرَبِّهِمۡ لَا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٥٩

Who never associate partners with their Lord

wa-alladhīna hum birabbihim lā yush'rikūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ یُؤۡتُونَ مَاۤ ءَاتَوا۟ وَّقُلُوبُهُمۡ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ رَ ٰجِعُونَ ۝٦٠

Who do whatever they do and give whatever they give in charity and for God’s cause, with their hearts trembling at the thought that they are bound to turn to their Lord (remaining anxious, for they are unsure whether God will accept from them and be pleased with them) –

wa-alladhīna yu'tūna mā ātaw waqulūbuhum wajilatun annahum ilā rabbihim rājiʿūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِی ٱلۡخَیۡرَ ٰتِ وَهُمۡ لَهَا سَـٰبِقُونَ ۝٦١

It is those (illustrious ones) who hasten to do all kinds of virtuous deeds, and they are in a virtuous competition with one another in doing them

ulāika yusāriʿūna fī l-khayrāti wahum lahā sābiqūn

وَلَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَاۚ وَلَدَیۡنَا كِتَـٰبࣱ یَنطِقُ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَهُمۡ لَا یُظۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٢

(No one, especially those unbelievers, should think that there is something superhuman required of humanity. For) We do not burden any soul except within its capacity, and with Us is a record that speaks the truth (about the deeds, thoughts, and intentions of each individual). They will in no wise be wronged

walā nukallifu nafsan illā wus'ʿahā waladaynā kitābun yanṭiqu bil-ḥaqi wahum lā yuẓ'lamūn

بَلۡ قُلُوبُهُمۡ فِی غَمۡرَةࣲ مِّنۡ هَـٰذَا وَلَهُمۡ أَعۡمَـٰلࣱ مِّن دُونِ ذَ ٰلِكَ هُمۡ لَهَا عَـٰمِلُونَ ۝٦٣

The fact is that the hearts of those unbelievers are utterly ignorant and heedless of all this, and apart from this, they have some evil deeds that they habitually commit (which prevent them from seeing and accepting the truth)

bal qulūbuhum fī ghamratin min hādhā walahum aʿmālun min dūni dhālika hum lahā ʿāmilūn

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَاۤ أَخَذۡنَا مُتۡرَفِیهِم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمۡ یَجۡءَرُونَ ۝٦٤

Until the time when We seize (them) with the punishment – those of them who have been lost in the pursuit of pleasures. They will then begin to groan for help

ḥattā idhā akhadhnā mut'rafīhim bil-ʿadhābi idhā hum yajarūn

لَا تَجۡءَرُوا۟ ٱلۡیَوۡمَۖ إِنَّكُم مِّنَّا لَا تُنصَرُونَ ۝٦٥

"Stop groaning for help today; you are not to receive any help from Us

lā tajarū l-yawma innakum minnā lā tunṣarūn

قَدۡ كَانَتۡ ءَایَـٰتِی تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَكُنتُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَعۡقَـٰبِكُمۡ تَنكِصُونَ ۝٦٦

"You know that My Revelations used to be recited to you, but you used to turn on your heels in aversion

qad kānat āyātī tut'lā ʿalaykum fakuntum ʿalā aʿqābikum tankiṣūn

مُسۡتَكۡبِرِینَ بِهِۦ سَـٰمِرࣰا تَهۡجُرُونَ ۝٦٧

"Behaving arrogantly, and talking nonsense (about the Messenger and the Religion he conveys) in your nightly conversations."

mus'takbirīna bihi sāmiran tahjurūn

أَفَلَمۡ یَدَّبَّرُوا۟ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ أَمۡ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا لَمۡ یَأۡتِ ءَابَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٦٨

Have they ever pondered over this Word (of God) or has there come to them something (completely novel in human history) which never came to their forefathers of old

afalam yaddabbarū l-qawla am jāahum mā lam yati ābāahumu l-awalīn

أَمۡ لَمۡ یَعۡرِفُوا۟ رَسُولَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَ ۝٦٩

Or is it that they are unaware of their Messenger, and so they disavow him

am lam yaʿrifū rasūlahum fahum lahu munkirūn

أَمۡ یَقُولُونَ بِهِۦ جِنَّةُۢۚ بَلۡ جَاۤءَهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لِلۡحَقِّ كَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٧٠

Or do they say that there is madness in him? No, he has brought them the truth, but most of them are disdainful of the truth

am yaqūlūna bihi jinnatun bal jāahum bil-ḥaqi wa-aktharuhum lil'ḥaqqi kārihūn

وَلَوِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلۡحَقُّ أَهۡوَاۤءَهُمۡ لَفَسَدَتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَمَن فِیهِنَّۚ بَلۡ أَتَیۡنَـٰهُم بِذِكۡرِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِهِم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٧١

Were the truth to follow their desires and caprices, the heavens and the earth and all those who live in them would certainly have gone to ruin. But We have brought to them whatever they must heed in life for their honor and happiness, and they turn away from that which will bring them honor and happiness

walawi ittabaʿa l-ḥaqu ahwāahum lafasadati l-samāwātu wal-arḍu waman fīhinna bal ataynāhum bidhik'rihim fahum ʿan dhik'rihim muʿ'riḍūn

أَمۡ تَسۡءَلُهُمۡ خَرۡجࣰا فَخَرَاجُ رَبِّكَ خَیۡرࣱۖ وَهُوَ خَیۡرُ ٱلرَّ ٰزِقِینَ ۝٧٢

Or do you (O Messenger) ask them for any payment? Whereas the reward of your Lord is the best and to everyone’s good. He is the Provider, with the ultimate rank of providing and the Best to be sought as provider

am tasaluhum kharjan fakharāju rabbika khayrun wahuwa khayru l-rāziqīn

وَإِنَّكَ لَتَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝٧٣

And certainly, you are calling them to a Straight Path

wa-innaka latadʿūhum ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi

وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ عَنِ ٱلصِّرَ ٰطِ لَنَـٰكِبُونَ ۝٧٤

Whereas, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are ever astray from the Path

wa-inna alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati ʿani l-ṣirāṭi lanākibūn

۞ وَلَوۡ رَحِمۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَكَشَفۡنَا مَا بِهِم مِّن ضُرࣲّ لَّلَجُّوا۟ فِی طُغۡیَـٰنِهِمۡ یَعۡمَهُونَ ۝٧٥

If We have mercy on them and remove from them the harm afflicting them, for sure they will persist in their rebellion, blindly wandering on

walaw raḥim'nāhum wakashafnā mā bihim min ḍurrin lalajjū fī ṭugh'yānihim yaʿmahūn

وَلَقَدۡ أَخَذۡنَـٰهُم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ فَمَا ٱسۡتَكَانُوا۟ لِرَبِّهِمۡ وَمَا یَتَضَرَّعُونَ ۝٧٦

For indeed We have seized them with the punishment (of famine), and yet, they have not bowed down to their Lord, nor do they invoke Him humbly

walaqad akhadhnāhum bil-ʿadhābi famā is'takānū lirabbihim wamā yataḍarraʿūn

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا فَتَحۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم بَابࣰا ذَا عَذَابࣲ شَدِیدٍ إِذَا هُمۡ فِیهِ مُبۡلِسُونَ ۝٧٧

Finally We open to them a gate of severe punishment and look, they are plunged into utter despair and sorrow

ḥattā idhā fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban dhā ʿadhābin shadīdin idhā hum fīhi mub'lisūn

5 Polytheism is self-condemned

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنشَأَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَ وَٱلۡأَفۡءِدَةَۚ قَلِیلࣰا مَّا تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٧٨

He it is Who has made for you (the faculty of) hearing, and eyes, and hearts. Scarcely do you give thanks

wahuwa alladhī ansha-a lakumu l-samʿa wal-abṣāra wal-afidata qalīlan mā tashkurūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی ذَرَأَكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُحۡشَرُونَ ۝٧٩

He it is Who has brought forth and made you grow up on earth, and to Him you will be gathered

wahuwa alladhī dhara-akum fī l-arḍi wa-ilayhi tuḥ'sharūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُحۡیِۦ وَیُمِیتُ وَلَهُ ٱخۡتِلَـٰفُ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٨٠

He it is Who gives life and causes to die, and the alternation of night and day (with their periods shortening and lengthening) occurs in obedience to Him (and for the purposes He has established). Will you not, then, reason and understand (that there cannot be another deity besides God)

wahuwa alladhī yuḥ'yī wayumītu walahu ikh'tilāfu al-layli wal-nahāri afalā taʿqilūn

بَلۡ قَالُوا۟ مِثۡلَ مَا قَالَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝٨١

(Instead of using their reason), they only speak as the former (disbelieving) peoples spoke

bal qālū mith'la mā qāla l-awalūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝٨٢

They say, "What! after we have died and become dust and bones, will we then be raised from the dead

qālū a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn

لَقَدۡ وُعِدۡنَا نَحۡنُ وَءَابَاۤؤُنَا هَـٰذَا مِن قَبۡلُ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّاۤ أَسَـٰطِیرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٨٣

"We were already promised such things, we and our forefathers. These are no more than the fables of the ancients."

laqad wuʿid'nā naḥnu waābāunā hādhā min qablu in hādhā illā asāṭīru l-awalīn

قُل لِّمَنِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَمَن فِیهَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٤

Say: "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is on it? (Tell me,) if you have any knowledge?"

qul limani l-arḍu waman fīhā in kuntum taʿlamūn

سَیَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِۚ قُلۡ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٨٥

They could not help but acknowledge: "To God." Say: "Will you not, then, reflect and be mindful?"

sayaqūlūna lillahi qul afalā tadhakkarūn

قُلۡ مَن رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ ٱلسَّبۡعِ وَرَبُّ ٱلۡعَرۡشِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٨٦

Say: "Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Supreme Throne (He Who rules the whole universe and sustains all that live in it)?"

qul man rabbu l-samāwāti l-sabʿi warabbu l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīm

سَیَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِۚ قُلۡ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝٨٧

They could not help but acknowledge: "These belong to God, too." Say: "Will you not, then, keep from disobedience to God in reverence for Him and piety?"

sayaqūlūna lillahi qul afalā tattaqūn

قُلۡ مَنۢ بِیَدِهِۦ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَهُوَ یُجِیرُ وَلَا یُجَارُ عَلَیۡهِ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٨٨

Say: "In Whose Hand is the absolute ownership and dominion of all things, and He protects and grants asylum, whereas against Him no asylum is available, and Himself never needs protection? (Tell me,) if you have any knowledge."

qul man biyadihi malakūtu kulli shayin wahuwa yujīru walā yujāru ʿalayhi in kuntum taʿlamūn

سَیَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِۚ قُلۡ فَأَنَّىٰ تُسۡحَرُونَ ۝٨٩

They could not help but acknowledge: "God exclusively." Say: "How, then, can you be so deluded?"

sayaqūlūna lillahi qul fa-annā tus'ḥarūn

بَلۡ أَتَیۡنَـٰهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٩٠

The fact is that We have conveyed to them the truth but for sure they are the liars (in their assertions, denial of the pillars of faith, and against their own selves)

bal ataynāhum bil-ḥaqi wa-innahum lakādhibūn

مَا ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِن وَلَدࣲ وَمَا كَانَ مَعَهُۥ مِنۡ إِلَـٰهٍۚ إِذࣰا لَّذَهَبَ كُلُّ إِلَـٰهِۭ بِمَا خَلَقَ وَلَعَلَا بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝٩١

God has never taken to Himself a child, nor is there any deity along with Him; otherwise each deity would surely have sought absolute independence with his creatures under his authority, and they would surely have tried to overpower one another. All-Glorified is God, in that He is far above what they attribute to Him

mā ittakhadha l-lahu min waladin wamā kāna maʿahu min ilāhin idhan ladhahaba kullu ilāhin bimā khalaqa walaʿalā baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin sub'ḥāna l-lahi ʿammā yaṣifūn

عَـٰلِمِ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٩٢

The Knower of the Unseen and the witnessed (all that lies in the hidden and visible realms and beyond and within the reach of any created being’s perception), and absolutely exalted is He above all that they associate with Him as partners

qul rabbi immā turiyannī mā yūʿadūn

6 Regrets of the Wicked

قُل رَّبِّ إِمَّا تُرِیَنِّی مَا یُوعَدُونَ ۝٩٣

Say: "My Lord, if You let me witness the fulfillment of what they have been promised (to suffer)

Qul rabbi imma turiyannee ma yooAAadoona

رَبِّ فَلَا تَجۡعَلۡنِی فِی ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٩٤

"Then, do not include me, my Lord, among those wrongdoing people!"

rabbi falā tajʿalnī fī l-qawmi l-ẓālimīn

وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّرِیَكَ مَا نَعِدُهُمۡ لَقَـٰدِرُونَ ۝٩٥

Surely We are absolutely able to let you witness the fulfillment of what We have promised them to suffer (and save you from)

wa-innā ʿalā an nuriyaka mā naʿiduhum laqādirūn

ٱدۡفَعۡ بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُ ٱلسَّیِّئَةَۚ نَحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا یَصِفُونَ ۝٩٦

(But whatever they may say or do) repel the evil (done to you and committed against your mission) with the best (of what you can do). We know best all that they falsely attribute to Us

id'faʿ bi-allatī hiya aḥsanu l-sayi-ata naḥnu aʿlamu bimā yaṣifūn

وَقُل رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنۡ هَمَزَ ٰتِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینِ ۝٩٧

And say: "My Lord! I seek refuge in You from the promptings and provocations of the satans (of the jinn and humankind especially in my relations with people, while I am performing my mission)

waqul rabbi aʿūdhu bika min hamazāti l-shayāṭīn

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن یَحۡضُرُونِ ۝٩٨

"I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me."

wa-aʿūdhu bika rabbi an yaḥḍurūn

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَ أَحَدَهُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ٱرۡجِعُونِ ۝٩٩

(Those who persist in their evil ways will not cease from their false attributions to God, and from their harsh reaction to you) until when death comes to one of them, and then he implores: "My Lord! Please, let me return to life

ḥattā idhā jāa aḥadahumu l-mawtu qāla rabbi ir'jiʿūn

لَعَلِّیۤ أَعۡمَلُ صَـٰلِحࣰا فِیمَا تَرَكۡتُۚ كَلَّاۤۚ إِنَّهَا كَلِمَةٌ هُوَ قَاۤىِٕلُهَاۖ وَمِن وَرَاۤىِٕهِم بَرۡزَخٌ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٠٠

"That I may act righteously with respect to whatever I have left undone in the world." No, never! It is merely a word that he utters over and over again. Before those (who are dead) is an intermediate world (of the grave, where they will stay) until the Day when they will be raised up

laʿallī aʿmalu ṣāliḥan fīmā taraktu kallā innahā kalimatun huwa qāiluhā wamin warāihim barzakhun ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn

فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِی ٱلصُّورِ فَلَاۤ أَنسَابَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ وَلَا یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝١٠١

Then, when the Trumpet (of Resurrection) is blown, there will no longer be any ties of kinship among them (which will be of any avail), nor will they ask about one another (as everyone will be too engrossed in their own plight to think of others)

fa-idhā nufikha fī l-ṣūri falā ansāba baynahum yawma-idhin walā yatasāalūn

فَمَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَ ٰزِینُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١٠٢

(Balances are set up) and those whose scales (of good deeds) are heavy – they are the prosperous

faman thaqulat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

وَمَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَ ٰزِینُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ فِی جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١٠٣

While those whose scales (of good deeds) are light – they will be those who have ruined their own selves, in Hell abiding

waman khaffat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulāika alladhīna khasirū anfusahum fī jahannama khālidūn

تَلۡفَحُ وُجُوهَهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا كَـٰلِحُونَ ۝١٠٤

The Fire will scorch their faces, their lips being displaced and their jaws protruding

talfaḥu wujūhahumu l-nāru wahum fīhā kāliḥūn

أَلَمۡ تَكُنۡ ءَایَـٰتِی تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَكُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝١٠٥

"Were not My Revelations recited to you, and you used to deny them?"

alam takun āyātī tut'lā ʿalaykum fakuntum bihā tukadhibūn

قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتۡ عَلَیۡنَا شِقۡوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوۡمࣰا ضَاۤلِّینَ ۝١٠٦

They will say: "Our Lord! Our wretchedness (which we ourselves provoked upon ourselves) prevailed over us, and we were people lost in error

qālū rabbanā ghalabat ʿalaynā shiq'watunā wakunnā qawman ḍāllīn

رَبَّنَاۤ أَخۡرِجۡنَا مِنۡهَا فَإِنۡ عُدۡنَا فَإِنَّا ظَـٰلِمُونَ ۝١٠٧

"Our Lord! Take us out of this (suffering). Then, if we ever revert to evil, we will indeed be wrongdoers."

rabbanā akhrij'nā min'hā fa-in ʿud'nā fa-innā ẓālimūn

قَالَ ٱخۡسَءُوا۟ فِیهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ ۝١٠٨

"Away with you into it! No longer address Me!"

qāla ikh'saū fīhā walā tukallimūn

إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَرِیقࣱ مِّنۡ عِبَادِی یَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَاۤ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا وَٱرۡحَمۡنَا وَأَنتَ خَیۡرُ ٱلرَّ ٰحِمِینَ ۝١٠٩

"There was among My servants a party who would pray, ‘Our Lord! We have believed, so forgive us, and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of the merciful.’

innahu kāna farīqun min ʿibādī yaqūlūna rabbanā āmannā fa-igh'fir lanā wa-ir'ḥamnā wa-anta khayru l-rāḥimīn

فَٱتَّخَذۡتُمُوهُمۡ سِخۡرِیًّا حَتَّىٰۤ أَنسَوۡكُمۡ ذِكۡرِی وَكُنتُم مِّنۡهُمۡ تَضۡحَكُونَ ۝١١٠

"You used to take them in mockery, so much so that your hostilities to them caused you to forget My remembrance, and you simply persisted in laughing at them

fa-ittakhadhtumūhum sikh'riyyan ḥattā ansawkum dhik'rī wakuntum min'hum taḍḥakūn

إِنِّی جَزَیۡتُهُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوۤا۟ أَنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡفَاۤىِٕزُونَ ۝١١١

"But look, today I have rewarded them for what they endured patiently, so that they are those who are the triumphant."

innī jazaytuhumu l-yawma bimā ṣabarū annahum humu l-fāizūn

قَـٰلَ كَمۡ لَبِثۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ عَدَدَ سِنِینَ ۝١١٢

(God) says: "For how many years did you stay on earth?"

qāla kam labith'tum fī l-arḍi ʿadada sinīn

قَالُوا۟ لَبِثۡنَا یَوۡمًا أَوۡ بَعۡضَ یَوۡمࣲ فَسۡءَلِ ٱلۡعَاۤدِّینَ ۝١١٣

They say: "We stayed for a day or part of a day. Ask of those who are able to keep count of this."

qālū labith'nā yawman aw baʿḍa yawmin fasali l-ʿādīn

قَـٰلَ إِن لَّبِثۡتُمۡ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰاۖ لَّوۡ أَنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١١٤

Says He: "You stayed but for a short while, if only you had known (how short it was to be and acted accordingly)

qāla in labith'tum illā qalīlan law annakum kuntum taʿlamūn

أَفَحَسِبۡتُمۡ أَنَّمَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ عَبَثࣰا وَأَنَّكُمۡ إِلَیۡنَا لَا تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝١١٥

"Or did you think that We created you in vain, and that you should devote all your time to play and entertainment, and that you would not be brought back to Us?"

afaḥasib'tum annamā khalaqnākum ʿabathan wa-annakum ilaynā lā tur'jaʿūn

فَتَعَـٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمَلِكُ ٱلۡحَقُّۖ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَرۡشِ ٱلۡكَرِیمِ ۝١١٦

Absolutely exalted is God, the Supreme Sovereign, the Absolute Truth and Ever-Constant. There is no deity but He, the Lord of the Supreme Throne of Nobility and Munificence

fataʿālā l-lahu l-maliku l-ḥaqu lā ilāha illā huwa rabbu l-ʿarshi l-karīm

وَمَن یَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ لَا بُرۡهَـٰنَ لَهُۥ بِهِۦ فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُۥ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦۤۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُفۡلِحُ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝١١٧

Whoever asserts the existence of another deity to worship along with God, for which it is inconceivable for him to have any evidence, will certainly be questioned by his Lord. Surely the unbelievers will not prosper

waman yadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara lā bur'hāna lahu bihi fa-innamā ḥisābuhu ʿinda rabbihi innahu lā yuf'liḥu l-kāfirūn

وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ وَٱرۡحَمۡ وَأَنتَ خَیۡرُ ٱلرَّ ٰحِمِینَ ۝١١٨

Say: "O my Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me (always treat me with Your forgiveness and mercy), for You are the Best of the merciful."

waqul rabbi igh'fir wa-ir'ḥam wa-anta khayru l-rāḥimīn
