1 Eminence attained by the Prophet

وَٱلنَّجۡمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ ۝١

By the star when it falls.

wal-najmi idhā haw

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمۡ وَمَا غَوَىٰ ۝٢

Your companion [Muhammad] did not go astray nor was he misled.

mā ḍalla ṣāḥibukum wamā ghaw

وَمَا یَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰۤ ۝٣

Nor does he speak out of the vain desire.

wamā yanṭiqu ʿani l-haw

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡیࣱ یُوحَىٰ ۝٤

It is but an inspiration inspired unto him.

in huwa illā waḥyun yūḥ

عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡقُوَىٰ ۝٥

He was taught by [Gabriel] the one formidable in power.

dhū mirratin fa-is'taw

ذُو مِرَّةࣲ فَٱسۡتَوَىٰ ۝٦

Master of strength and he [Gabriel] rose up in appearance most proportionate.

Thoo mirratin faistawa

وَهُوَ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ ۝٧

While he [Gabriel] was in the horizon the most high.

wahuwa bil-ufuqi l-aʿl

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ ۝٨

Then he drew near and lowered down.

thumma danā fatadall

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوۡسَیۡنِ أَوۡ أَدۡنَىٰ ۝٩

Till he was at the angle of two bows or even nearer.

fakāna qāba qawsayni aw adn

فَأَوۡحَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ مَاۤ أَوۡحَىٰ ۝١٠

And then He inspired unto His slave what He inspired.

fa-awḥā ilā ʿabdihi mā awḥ

مَا كَذَبَ ٱلۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰۤ ۝١١

Then the [Prophet Muhammad’s] heart did not belie that which he saw.

mā kadhaba l-fuādu mā ra

أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا یَرَىٰ ۝١٢

Are you then disputing with him about that which he sees?

afatumārūnahu ʿalā mā yar

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ نَزۡلَةً أُخۡرَىٰ ۝١٣

For indeed he [Prophet Muhammad] saw him [Gabriel] at the second descent.

walaqad raāhu nazlatan ukh'r

عِندَ سِدۡرَةِ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ ۝١٤

Besides the Lote-Tree of the farthest boundary.

idh yaghshā l-sid'rata mā yaghsh

عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰۤ ۝١٥

Besides it is garden of the welcoming.

AAindaha jannatu alma/wa

إِذۡ یَغۡشَى ٱلسِّدۡرَةَ مَا یَغۡشَىٰ ۝١٦

At a time when He was covering the Lote-Tree with that which He covered.

Ith yaghsha alssidrata ma yaghsha

مَا زَاغَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ ۝١٧

The [Prophet Muhammad’s] sight did not wander nor did it [the sight] transgress.

mā zāgha l-baṣaru wamā ṭagh

لَقَدۡ رَأَىٰ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰۤ ۝١٨

Truly he saw the most great from among the signs of his Lord.

laqad raā min āyāti rabbihi l-kub'r

أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلۡعُزَّىٰ ۝١٩

Have you seen the ‘Lat’ and the ‘Uzza’?

afara-aytumu l-lāta wal-ʿuz

وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰۤ ۝٢٠

And ‘Manat’, the third one?

wamanata l-thālithata l-ukh'r

أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ۝٢١

Is it that for you are the male and for Him the female?

alakumu l-dhakaru walahu l-unth

تِلۡكَ إِذࣰا قِسۡمَةࣱ ضِیزَىٰۤ ۝٢٢

That then is a division most biased.

til'ka idhan qis'matun ḍīz

إِنۡ هِیَ إِلَّاۤ أَسۡمَاۤءࣱ سَمَّیۡتُمُوهَاۤ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُم مَّاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَـٰنٍۚ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَى ٱلۡأَنفُسُۖ وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰۤ ۝٢٣

These are but names that you have coined, you and your fathers. Allah has not sent down any authority by them. They but follow the wishful thinking and that which the souls desire while the guidance has indeed come unto them from their Lord.

in hiya illā asmāon sammaytumūhā antum waābāukum mā anzala l-lahu bihā min sul'ṭānin in yattabiʿūna illā l-ẓana wamā tahwā l-anfusu walaqad jāahum min rabbihimu l-hud

أَمۡ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ ۝٢٤

Or is it that the man can get all that he wishes for?

am lil'insāni mā tamann

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٢٥

But for Allah is the end and the beginning.

falillahi l-ākhiratu wal-ūl

2 Nothing avails against Truth

۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكࣲ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ لَا تُغۡنِی شَفَـٰعَتُهُمۡ شَیۡءًا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَن یَأۡذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَرۡضَىٰۤ ۝٢٦

And how many an angel [are there] in the heavens? Their intercession avails nothing except after Allah gives permission for whom He wills and pleases.

wakam min malakin fī l-samāwāti lā tugh'nī shafāʿatuhum shayan illā min baʿdi an yadhana l-lahu liman yashāu wayarḍ

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ لَیُسَمُّونَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ تَسۡمِیَةَ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ۝٢٧

Truly those who do not believe in the hereafter do name the angels with the naming of the female.

inna alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati layusammūna l-malāikata tasmiyata l-unth

وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا یُغۡنِی مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ شَیۡءࣰا ۝٢٨

And there is no knowledge [certitude] for them about that. They but follow the wishful thinking and truly the wishful thinking avails nothing from the truth.

wamā lahum bihi min ʿil'min in yattabiʿūna illā l-ẓana wa-inna l-ẓana lā yugh'nī mina l-ḥaqi shaya

فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكۡرِنَا وَلَمۡ یُرِدۡ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا ۝٢٩

Therefore turn aside from the one who turns away from Our remembrance and does not want except the life of this world.

fa-aʿriḍ ʿan man tawallā ʿan dhik'rinā walam yurid illā l-ḥayata l-dun'y

ذَ ٰلِكَ مَبۡلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ ۝٣٠

That is their limit from the knowledge. Truly your Lord knows all about the one who has gone astray from His way and He knows all about the one who has found the guidance.

dhālika mablaghuhum mina l-ʿil'mi inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḍalla ʿan sabīlihi wahuwa aʿlamu bimani ih'tad

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لِیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَسَـٰۤءُوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَى ۝٣١

And for Allah is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth so that He may reward those who have done evil because of what they have done and may reward those who have acted in excellence with the most excellent [reward].

walillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi liyajziya alladhīna asāū bimā ʿamilū wayajziya alladhīna aḥsanū bil-ḥus'n

ٱلَّذِینَ یَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰۤىِٕرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَ ٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَ ٰسِعُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِكُمۡ إِذۡ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِذۡ أَنتُمۡ أَجِنَّةࣱ فِی بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوۤا۟ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰۤ ۝٣٢

Those who keep away from the major sins and from the offences except the minor ones. Truly your Lord is abundant in the forgiveness and He knows all about you when He raised you from the earth and when you were covered in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be sanctimonious. He it is who knows all about one who safeguards his soul.

alladhīna yajtanibūna kabāira l-ith'mi wal-fawāḥisha illā l-lamama inna rabbaka wāsiʿu l-maghfirati huwa aʿlamu bikum idh ansha-akum mina l-arḍi wa-idh antum ajinnatun fī buṭūni ummahātikum falā tuzakkū anfusakum huwa aʿlamu bimani ittaq

3 Allah's Power manifested

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ ٱلَّذِی تَوَلَّىٰ ۝٣٣

Have you seen the one who has turned back?

afara-ayta alladhī tawall

وَأَعۡطَىٰ قَلِیلࣰا وَأَكۡدَىٰۤ ۝٣٤

And he gives little and he became miserly.

wa-aʿṭā qalīlan wa-akd

أَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ فَهُوَ یَرَىٰۤ ۝٣٥

Is the knowledge of the unseen with him so that he can see?

aʿindahu ʿil'mu l-ghaybi fahuwa yar

أَمۡ لَمۡ یُنَبَّأۡ بِمَا فِی صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ ۝٣٦

Or is he not informed about that which is in the scripture of Moses?

am lam yunabba bimā fī ṣuḥufi mūs

وَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ٱلَّذِی وَفَّىٰۤ ۝٣٧

And of Abraham who fulfilled [the words].

wa-ib'rāhīma alladhī waff

أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةࣱ وِزۡرَ أُخۡرَىٰ ۝٣٨

That no bearer of a burden will bear the burden of another.

allā taziru wāziratun wiz'ra ukh'r

وَأَن لَّیۡسَ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ ۝٣٩

And that there is nothing for the man except that for which he has labored.

wa-an laysa lil'insāni illā mā saʿ

وَأَنَّ سَعۡیَهُۥ سَوۡفَ یُرَىٰ ۝٤٠

And that his labour will soon be seen.

wa-anna saʿyahu sawfa yur

ثُمَّ یُجۡزَىٰهُ ٱلۡجَزَاۤءَ ٱلۡأَوۡفَىٰ ۝٤١

Then will he be rewarded with the reward most fulfilled.

thumma yuj'zāhu l-jazāa l-awf

وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ ۝٤٢

And that unto your Lord is the final end.

wa-anna ilā rabbika l-muntah

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضۡحَكَ وَأَبۡكَىٰ ۝٤٣

And that it is He who makes laugh and makes weep.

wa-annahu huwa aḍḥaka wa-abk

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحۡیَا ۝٤٤

And that it is He who puts to death and gives life.

wa-annahu huwa amāta wa-aḥy

وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوۡجَیۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ۝٤٥

And that He indeed created the pairs, the male and the female.

wa-annahu khalaqa l-zawjayni l-dhakara wal-unth

مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ إِذَا تُمۡنَىٰ ۝٤٦

From a liquid as it flows out.

min nuṭ'fatin idhā tum'n

وَأَنَّ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰ ۝٤٧

And that upon Him lies the other creation.

wa-anna ʿalayhi l-nashata l-ukh'r

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغۡنَىٰ وَأَقۡنَىٰ ۝٤٨

And that indeed it is He who makes rich and makes upright.

wa-annahu huwa aghnā wa-aqn

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعۡرَىٰ ۝٤٩

And truly He it is the Lord of the Shi’ra [the Sirius].

wa-annahu huwa rabbu l-shiʿ'r

وَأَنَّهُۥۤ أَهۡلَكَ عَادًا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٥٠

And truly He it is who destroyed ‘Ad of the earlier times.

wa-annahu ahlaka ʿādan l-ūl

وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَاۤ أَبۡقَىٰ ۝٥١

And Thamud and He did not leave any.

wathamūdā famā abq

وَقَوۡمَ نُوحࣲ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ هُمۡ أَظۡلَمَ وَأَطۡغَىٰ ۝٥٢

And the people of Noah before. Truly they were the most wrongful and the most transgressive.

waqawma nūḥin min qablu innahum kānū hum aẓlama wa-aṭgh

وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَةَ أَهۡوَىٰ ۝٥٣

And the city that was upturned He caused it to fall down.

wal-mu'tafikata ahw

فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ ۝٥٤

So that He covered it by that which covered [it].

faghashāhā mā ghash

فَبِأَیِّ ءَالَاۤءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ ۝٥٥

Then about which of the blessings of your Lord will you dispute?

fabi-ayyi ālāi rabbika tatamār

هَـٰذَا نَذِیرࣱ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰۤ ۝٥٦

This is a warner from the warners of the earlier times.

hādhā nadhīrun mina l-nudhuri l-ūl

أَزِفَتِ ٱلۡءَازِفَةُ ۝٥٧

The momentous has drawn near.

azifati l-āzifat

لَیۡسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ ۝٥٨

There is no remover [of its woes] except Allah.

laysa lahā min dūni l-lahi kāshifatu

أَفَمِنۡ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِ تَعۡجَبُونَ ۝٥٩

Do you then marvel at this discourse?

afamin hādhā l-ḥadīthi taʿjabūn

وَتَضۡحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبۡكُونَ ۝٦٠

And you laugh and do not weep.

wataḍḥakūna walā tabkūn

وَأَنتُمۡ سَـٰمِدُونَ ۝٦١

While you are merry-making.

wa-antum sāmidūn

فَ̅ٱ̅سۡ̅جُ̅دُ̅و̅ا۟̅ لِلَّهِ وَٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ۝٦٢ ۩

So prostrate for Allah and serve [Him] truly.

fa-us'judū lillahi wa-uʿ'bud
