1 Eminence attained by the Prophet
53:1 ›
وَٱلنَّجۡمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ ۝١
John Medows Rodwell
By the STAR when it setteth
wal-najmi idhā haw
53:2 ›
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمۡ وَمَا غَوَىٰ ۝٢
John Medows Rodwell
Your compatriot erreth not, nor is he led astray
mā ḍalla ṣāḥibukum wamā ghaw
53:3 ›
وَمَا یَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰۤ ۝٣
John Medows Rodwell
Neither speaketh he from mere impulse
wamā yanṭiqu ʿani l-haw
53:4 ›
إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡیࣱ یُوحَىٰ ۝٤
John Medows Rodwell
The Koran is no other than a revelation revealed to him
in huwa illā waḥyun yūḥ
53:5 ›
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡقُوَىٰ ۝٥

One terrible in power taught it him
dhū mirratin fa-is'taw
53:6 ›
ذُو مِرَّةࣲ فَٱسۡتَوَىٰ ۝٦

Endued with wisdom. With even balance stood he
Thoo mirratin faistawa
53:7 ›
وَهُوَ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ ۝٧

In the highest part of the horizon
wahuwa bil-ufuqi l-aʿl
53:8 ›
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ ۝٨

Then came he nearer and approached
thumma danā fatadall
53:9 ›
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوۡسَیۡنِ أَوۡ أَدۡنَىٰ ۝٩
John Medows Rodwell
And was at the distance of two bows, or even closer,
fakāna qāba qawsayni aw adn
53:10 ›
فَأَوۡحَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ مَاۤ أَوۡحَىٰ ۝١٠
John Medows Rodwell
And he revealed to his servant what he revealed
fa-awḥā ilā ʿabdihi mā awḥ
53:11 ›
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰۤ ۝١١
John Medows Rodwell
His heart falsified not what he saw
mā kadhaba l-fuādu mā ra
53:12 ›
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا یَرَىٰ ۝١٢
John Medows Rodwell
What! will ye then dispute with him as to what he saw
afatumārūnahu ʿalā mā yar
53:13 ›
وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ نَزۡلَةً أُخۡرَىٰ ۝١٣
John Medows Rodwell
He had seen him also another time
walaqad raāhu nazlatan ukh'r
53:14 ›
عِندَ سِدۡرَةِ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ ۝١٤
John Medows Rodwell
Near the Sidrah-tree, which marks the boundary
idh yaghshā l-sid'rata mā yaghsh
53:15 ›
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰۤ ۝١٥
John Medows Rodwell
Near which is the garden of repose
AAindaha jannatu alma/wa
53:16 ›
إِذۡ یَغۡشَى ٱلسِّدۡرَةَ مَا یَغۡشَىٰ ۝١٦
John Medows Rodwell
When the Sidrah-tree was covered with what covered it
Ith yaghsha alssidrata ma yaghsha
53:17 ›
مَا زَاغَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ ۝١٧

His eye turned not aside, nor did it wander
mā zāgha l-baṣaru wamā ṭagh
53:18 ›
لَقَدۡ رَأَىٰ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰۤ ۝١٨

For he saw the greatest of the signs of his Lord
laqad raā min āyāti rabbihi l-kub'r
53:19 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلۡعُزَّىٰ ۝١٩

Do you see Al-Lat and Al-Ozza
afara-aytumu l-lāta wal-ʿuz
53:20 ›
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰۤ ۝٢٠
John Medows Rodwell
And Manat the third idol besides
wamanata l-thālithata l-ukh'r
53:21 ›
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ۝٢١
John Medows Rodwell
What? shall ye have male progeny and God female
alakumu l-dhakaru walahu l-unth
53:22 ›
تِلۡكَ إِذࣰا قِسۡمَةࣱ ضِیزَىٰۤ ۝٢٢
John Medows Rodwell
This were indeed an unfair partition
til'ka idhan qis'matun ḍīz
53:23 ›
إِنۡ هِیَ إِلَّاۤ أَسۡمَاۤءࣱ سَمَّیۡتُمُوهَاۤ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُم مَّاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَـٰنٍۚ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَى ٱلۡأَنفُسُۖ وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰۤ ۝٢٣
John Medows Rodwell
These are mere names: ye and your fathers named them thus: God hath not sent down any warranty in their regard. A mere conceit and their own impulses do they follow. Yet hath "the guidance" from their Lord come to them
in hiya illā asmāon sammaytumūhā antum waābāukum mā anzala l-lahu bihā min sul'ṭānin in yattabiʿūna illā l-ẓana wamā tahwā l-anfusu walaqad jāahum min rabbihimu l-hud
53:24 ›
أَمۡ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ ۝٢٤
John Medows Rodwell
Shall man have whatever he wisheth
am lil'insāni mā tamann
53:25 ›
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٢٥
John Medows Rodwell
The future and the present are in the hand of God
falillahi l-ākhiratu wal-ūl
2 Nothing avails against Truth
53:26 ›
۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكࣲ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ لَا تُغۡنِی شَفَـٰعَتُهُمۡ شَیۡءًا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَن یَأۡذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَرۡضَىٰۤ ۝٢٦
John Medows Rodwell
And many as are the Angels in the Heavens, their intercession shall be of no avail Until God hath permitted it to whom he shall please and will accept
wakam min malakin fī l-samāwāti lā tugh'nī shafāʿatuhum shayan illā min baʿdi an yadhana l-lahu liman yashāu wayarḍ
53:27 ›
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ لَیُسَمُّونَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ تَسۡمِیَةَ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ۝٢٧
John Medows Rodwell
Verily, it is they who believe not in the life to come, who name the angels with names of females
inna alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati layusammūna l-malāikata tasmiyata l-unth
53:28 ›
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا یُغۡنِی مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ شَیۡءࣰا ۝٢٨
John Medows Rodwell
But herein they have no knowledge: they follow a mere conceit; and mere conceit can never take the place of truth
wamā lahum bihi min ʿil'min in yattabiʿūna illā l-ẓana wa-inna l-ẓana lā yugh'nī mina l-ḥaqi shaya
53:29 ›
فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكۡرِنَا وَلَمۡ یُرِدۡ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا ۝٢٩
John Medows Rodwell
Withdraw then from him who turneth his back on our warning and desireth only this present life
fa-aʿriḍ ʿan man tawallā ʿan dhik'rinā walam yurid illā l-ḥayata l-dun'y
53:30 ›
ذَ ٰلِكَ مَبۡلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ ۝٣٠
John Medows Rodwell
This is the sum of their knowledge. Truly thy Lord best knoweth him who erreth from his way, and He best knoweth him who hath received guidance
dhālika mablaghuhum mina l-ʿil'mi inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḍalla ʿan sabīlihi wahuwa aʿlamu bimani ih'tad
53:31 ›
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لِیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَسَـٰۤءُوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَى ۝٣١
John Medows Rodwell
And whatever is in the Heavens and in the Earth is God's that he may reward those who do evil according to their deeds: and those who do good will He reward with good things
walillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi liyajziya alladhīna asāū bimā ʿamilū wayajziya alladhīna aḥsanū bil-ḥus'n
53:32 ›
ٱلَّذِینَ یَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰۤىِٕرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَ ٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَ ٰسِعُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِكُمۡ إِذۡ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِذۡ أَنتُمۡ أَجِنَّةࣱ فِی بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوۤا۟ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰۤ ۝٣٢
John Medows Rodwell
To those who avoid great crimes and scandals but commit only lighter faults, verily, thy Lord will be diffuse of mercy. He well knew you when he produced you out of the earth, and when ye were embryos in your mother's womb. Assert not then your own purity. He best knoweth who feareth him
alladhīna yajtanibūna kabāira l-ith'mi wal-fawāḥisha illā l-lamama inna rabbaka wāsiʿu l-maghfirati huwa aʿlamu bikum idh ansha-akum mina l-arḍi wa-idh antum ajinnatun fī buṭūni ummahātikum falā tuzakkū anfusakum huwa aʿlamu bimani ittaq
3 Allah's Power manifested
53:33 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتَ ٱلَّذِی تَوَلَّىٰ ۝٣٣

Hast thou considered him who turned his back
afara-ayta alladhī tawall
53:34 ›
وَأَعۡطَىٰ قَلِیلࣰا وَأَكۡدَىٰۤ ۝٣٤
John Medows Rodwell
Who giveth little and is covetous
wa-aʿṭā qalīlan wa-akd
53:35 ›
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ فَهُوَ یَرَىٰۤ ۝٣٥
John Medows Rodwell
Is it that he hath the knowledge and vision of the secret things
aʿindahu ʿil'mu l-ghaybi fahuwa yar
53:36 ›
أَمۡ لَمۡ یُنَبَّأۡ بِمَا فِی صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ ۝٣٦
John Medows Rodwell
Hath he not been told of what is in the pages of Moses
am lam yunabba bimā fī ṣuḥufi mūs
53:37 ›
وَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ٱلَّذِی وَفَّىٰۤ ۝٣٧
John Medows Rodwell
And of Abraham faithful to his pledge
wa-ib'rāhīma alladhī waff
53:38 ›
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةࣱ وِزۡرَ أُخۡرَىٰ ۝٣٨
John Medows Rodwell
That no burdened soul shall bear the burdens of another
allā taziru wāziratun wiz'ra ukh'r
53:39 ›
وَأَن لَّیۡسَ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ ۝٣٩
John Medows Rodwell
And that nothing shall be reckoned to a man but that for which he hath made efforts
wa-an laysa lil'insāni illā mā saʿ
53:40 ›
وَأَنَّ سَعۡیَهُۥ سَوۡفَ یُرَىٰ ۝٤٠
John Medows Rodwell
And that his efforts shall at last be seen in their true light
wa-anna saʿyahu sawfa yur
53:41 ›
ثُمَّ یُجۡزَىٰهُ ٱلۡجَزَاۤءَ ٱلۡأَوۡفَىٰ ۝٤١
John Medows Rodwell
That then he shall be recompensed with a most exact recompense
thumma yuj'zāhu l-jazāa l-awf
53:42 ›
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ ۝٤٢
John Medows Rodwell
And that unto thy Lord is the term of all things
wa-anna ilā rabbika l-muntah
53:43 ›
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضۡحَكَ وَأَبۡكَىٰ ۝٤٣
John Medows Rodwell
And that it is He who causeth to laugh and to weep
wa-annahu huwa aḍḥaka wa-abk
53:44 ›
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحۡیَا ۝٤٤
John Medows Rodwell
And that He causeth to die and maketh alive
wa-annahu huwa amāta wa-aḥy
53:45 ›
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوۡجَیۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ۝٤٥
John Medows Rodwell
And that He hath created the sexes, male and female
wa-annahu khalaqa l-zawjayni l-dhakara wal-unth
53:46 ›
مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ إِذَا تُمۡنَىٰ ۝٤٦
John Medows Rodwell
From the diffused germs of life
min nuṭ'fatin idhā tum'n
53:47 ›
وَأَنَّ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰ ۝٤٧
John Medows Rodwell
And that with Him is the second creation
wa-anna ʿalayhi l-nashata l-ukh'r
53:48 ›
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغۡنَىٰ وَأَقۡنَىٰ ۝٤٨
John Medows Rodwell
And that He enricheth and causeth to possess
wa-annahu huwa aghnā wa-aqn
53:49 ›
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعۡرَىٰ ۝٤٩
John Medows Rodwell
And that He is the Lord of Sirius
wa-annahu huwa rabbu l-shiʿ'r
53:50 ›
وَأَنَّهُۥۤ أَهۡلَكَ عَادًا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝٥٠
John Medows Rodwell
And that it was He who destroyed the ancient Adites
wa-annahu ahlaka ʿādan l-ūl
53:51 ›
وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَاۤ أَبۡقَىٰ ۝٥١
John Medows Rodwell
And the people of Themoud and left not one survivor
wathamūdā famā abq
53:52 ›
وَقَوۡمَ نُوحࣲ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ هُمۡ أَظۡلَمَ وَأَطۡغَىٰ ۝٥٢
John Medows Rodwell
And before them the people of Noah who were most wicked and most perverse
waqawma nūḥin min qablu innahum kānū hum aẓlama wa-aṭgh
53:53 ›
وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَةَ أَهۡوَىٰ ۝٥٣
John Medows Rodwell
And it was He who destroyed the cities that were overthrown
wal-mu'tafikata ahw
53:54 ›
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ ۝٥٤
John Medows Rodwell
So that that which covered them covered them
faghashāhā mā ghash
53:55 ›
فَبِأَیِّ ءَالَاۤءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ ۝٥٥
John Medows Rodwell
Which then of thy Lord's benefits wilt thou make a matter of doubt
fabi-ayyi ālāi rabbika tatamār
53:56 ›
هَـٰذَا نَذِیرࣱ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰۤ ۝٥٦
John Medows Rodwell
He who warneth you is one of the warners of old
hādhā nadhīrun mina l-nudhuri l-ūl
53:57 ›
أَزِفَتِ ٱلۡءَازِفَةُ ۝٥٧
John Medows Rodwell
The day that must draw nigh, draweth nigh already
azifati l-āzifat
53:58 ›
لَیۡسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ ۝٥٨
John Medows Rodwell
and yet none but God can reveal its time
laysa lahā min dūni l-lahi kāshifatu
53:59 ›
أَفَمِنۡ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِ تَعۡجَبُونَ ۝٥٩

Is it at these sayings that ye marvel
afamin hādhā l-ḥadīthi taʿjabūn
53:60 ›
وَتَضۡحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبۡكُونَ ۝٦٠
John Medows Rodwell
And that ye laugh and weep not
wataḍḥakūna walā tabkūn
53:61 ›
وَأَنتُمۡ سَـٰمِدُونَ ۝٦١
John Medows Rodwell
And that ye are triflers
wa-antum sāmidūn
53:62 ›
فَ̅ٱ̅سۡ̅جُ̅دُ̅و̅ا۟̅ لِلَّهِ وَٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ۝٦٢ ۩
John Medows Rodwell
Prostrate yourselves then to God and worship
fa-us'judū lillahi wa-uʿ'bud
