وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفۡسٍ أَن تُؤۡمِنَ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَیَجۡعَلُ ٱلرِّجۡسَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٠٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And it is not for a soul to believe except by permission of Allah , and He will place defilement upon those who will not use reason
Abdel Haleem: No soul can believe except by God’s will, and He brings disgrace on those who do not use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: It is not for any soul to believe save by the permission of Allah. He hath set uncleanness upon those who have no sense
Jonah 10:16 Verb
قُل لَّوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مَا تَلَوۡتُهُۥ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكُم بِهِۦۖ فَقَدۡ لَبِثۡتُ فِیكُمۡ عُمُرࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, "If Allah had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you, for I had remained among you a lifetime before it. Then will you not reason?"
Abdel Haleem: Say, ‘If God had so willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. I lived a whole lifetime among you before it came to me. How can you not use your reason?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say: If Allah had so willed I should not have recited it to you nor would He have made it known to you. I dwelt among you a whole lifetime before it (came to me). Have ye then no sense
Jonah 10:42 Verb
وَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَسۡتَمِعُونَ إِلَیۡكَۚ أَفَأَنتَ تُسۡمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ وَلَوۡ كَانُوا۟ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And among them are those who listen to you. But can you cause the deaf to hear, although they will not use reason
Abdel Haleem: Some of them do listen to you: but can you make the deaf hear if they will not use their minds
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And of them are some who listen unto thee. But canst thou make the deaf to hear even though they apprehend not
Hud 11:51 Verb
یَـٰقَوۡمِ لَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ أَجۡرًاۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلَّذِی فَطَرَنِیۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٥١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): O my people, I do not ask you for it any reward. My reward is only from the one who created me. Then will you not reason
Abdel Haleem: I ask no reward from you, my people; my reward comes only from Him who created me. Why do you not use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O my people! I ask of you no reward for it. Lo! my reward is the concern only of Him Who made me. Have ye then no sense
Joseph 12:109 Verb
وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالࣰا نُّوحِیۤ إِلَیۡهِم مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡقُرَىٰۤۗ أَفَلَمۡ یَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَیَنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۗ وَلَدَارُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ ٱتَّقَوۡا۟ۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٠٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah ; then will you not reason
Abdel Haleem: All the messengers We sent before you [Muhammad] were men to whom We made revelations, men chosen from the people of their towns. Have the [disbelievers] not travelled through the land and seen the end of those who went before them? For those who are mindful of God, the Home in the Hereafter is better. Do you [people] not use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: We sent not before thee (any messengers) save men whom We inspired from among the folk of the townships - Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? And verily the abode of the Hereafter, for those who ward off (evil), is best. Have ye then no sense?
Joseph 12:2 Verb
إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَ ٰنًا عَرَبِیࣰّا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand
Abdel Haleem: We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you [people] may understand
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Lo! We have revealed it, a Lecture in Arabic, that ye may understand
The Thunder 13:4 Verb
وَفِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ قِطَعࣱ مُّتَجَـٰوِرَ ٰتࣱ وَجَنَّـٰتࣱ مِّنۡ أَعۡنَـٰبࣲ وَزَرۡعࣱ وَنَخِیلࣱ صِنۡوَانࣱ وَغَیۡرُ صِنۡوَانࣲ یُسۡقَىٰ بِمَاۤءࣲ وَ ٰحِدࣲ وَنُفَضِّلُ بَعۡضَهَا عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ فِی ٱلۡأُكُلِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason
Abdel Haleem: There are, in the land, neighbouring plots, gardens of vineyards, cornfields, palm trees in clusters or otherwise, all watered with the same water, yet We make some of them taste better than others: there truly are signs in this for people who reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And in the Earth are neighbouring tracts, vineyards and ploughed lands, and date-palms, like and unlike, which are watered with one water. And we have made some of them to excel others in fruit. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who have sense
The Bee 16:12 Verb
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّیۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ وَٱلنُّجُومُ مُسَخَّرَ ٰتُۢ بِأَمۡرِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And He has subjected for you the night and day and the sun and moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason
Abdel Haleem: By His command He has made the night and day, the sun, moon, and stars all of benefit to you. There truly are signs in this for those who use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And He hath constrained the night and the day and the sun and the moon to be of service unto you, and the stars are made subservient by His command. Lo! herein indeed are portents for people who have sense
The Bee 16:67 Verb
وَمِن ثَمَرَ ٰتِ ٱلنَّخِیلِ وَٱلۡأَعۡنَـٰبِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِنۡهُ سَكَرࣰا وَرِزۡقًا حَسَنًاۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And from the fruits of the palm trees and grapevines you take intoxicant and good provision. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who reason
Abdel Haleem: From the fruits of date palms and grapes you take sweet juice and wholesome provisions. There truly is a sign in this for people who use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And of the fruits of the date-palm, and grapes, whence ye derive strong drink and (also) good nourishment. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for people who have sense
The Prophets 21:10 Verb
لَقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكُمۡ كِتَـٰبࣰا فِیهِ ذِكۡرُكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): We have certainly sent down to you a Book in which is your mention. Then will you not reason
Abdel Haleem: And now We have sent down to you [people] a Scripture to remind you. Will you not use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Now We have revealed unto you a Scripture wherein is your Reminder. Have ye then no sense
The Prophets 21:67 Verb
أُفࣲّ لَّكُمۡ وَلِمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah . Then will you not use reason?"
Abdel Haleem: Shame on you and on the things you worship instead of God. Have you no sense?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Fie on you and all that ye worship instead of Allah! Have ye then no sense
The Pilgrimage 22:46 Verb
أَفَلَمۡ یَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَتَكُونَ لَهُمۡ قُلُوبࣱ یَعۡقِلُونَ بِهَاۤ أَوۡ ءَاذَانࣱ یَسۡمَعُونَ بِهَاۖ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَعۡمَى ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرُ وَلَـٰكِن تَعۡمَى ٱلۡقُلُوبُ ٱلَّتِی فِی ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝٤٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts
Abdel Haleem: Have these people [of Mecca] not travelled through the land with hearts to understand and ears to hear? It is not people’s eyes that are blind, but their hearts within their breasts
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind
The Believers 23:80 Verb
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی یُحۡیِۦ وَیُمِیتُ وَلَهُ ٱخۡتِلَـٰفُ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٨٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason
Abdel Haleem: it is He who gives life and death; the alternation of night and day depends on Him; will you not use your minds
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And He it is Who giveth life and causeth death, and His is the difference of night and day. Have ye then no sense
The Light 24:61 Verb
لَّیۡسَ عَلَى ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ حَرَجࣱ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلۡأَعۡرَجِ حَرَجࣱ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلۡمَرِیضِ حَرَجࣱ وَلَا عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَن تَأۡكُلُوا۟ مِنۢ بُیُوتِكُمۡ أَوۡ بُیُوتِ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمۡ أَوۡ بُیُوتِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡ أَوۡ بُیُوتِ إِخۡوَ ٰنِكُمۡ أَوۡ بُیُوتِ أَخَوَ ٰتِكُمۡ أَوۡ بُیُوتِ أَعۡمَـٰمِكُمۡ أَوۡ بُیُوتِ عَمَّـٰتِكُمۡ أَوۡ بُیُوتِ أَخۡوَ ٰلِكُمۡ أَوۡ بُیُوتِ خَـٰلَـٰتِكُمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكۡتُم مَّفَاتِحَهُۥۤ أَوۡ صَدِیقِكُمۡۚ لَیۡسَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَأۡكُلُوا۟ جَمِیعًا أَوۡ أَشۡتَاتࣰاۚ فَإِذَا دَخَلۡتُم بُیُوتࣰا فَسَلِّمُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِكُمۡ تَحِیَّةࣰ مِّنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُبَـٰرَكَةࣰ طَیِّبَةࣰۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُبَیِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): There is not upon the blind [any] constraint nor upon the lame constraint nor upon the ill constraint nor upon yourselves when you eat from your [own] houses or the houses of your fathers or the houses of your mothers or the houses of your brothers or the houses of your sisters or the houses of your father's brothers or the houses of your father's sisters or the houses of your mother's brothers or the houses of your mother's sisters or [from houses] whose keys you possess or [from the house] of your friend. There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allah , blessed and good. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses [of ordinance] that you may understand
Abdel Haleem: No blame will be attached to the blind, the lame, the sick.Whether you eat in your own houses, or those of your fathers, your mothers, your brothers, your sisters, your paternal uncles, your paternal aunts, your maternal uncles, your maternal aunts, houses you have the keys for, or any of your friends’ houses, you will not be blamed: you will not be blamed whether you eat in company or separately. When you enter any house, greet one another with a greeting of blessing and goodness as enjoined by God. This is how God makes His messages clear to you so that you may understand
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: No blame is there upon the blind nor any blame upon the lame nor any blame upon the sick nor on yourselves if ye eat from your houses, or the houses of your fathers, or the houses of your mothers, or the houses of your brothers, or the houses of your sisters, or the houses of your fathers' brothers, or the houses of your fathers' sisters, or the houses of your mothers' brothers, or the houses of your mothers' sisters, or (from that) whereof ye hold the keys, or (from the house) of a friend. No sin shall it be for you whether ye eat together or apart. But when ye enter houses, salute one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and sweet. Thus Allah maketh clear His revelations for you, that haply ye may understand
The Criterion, The Standard 25:44 Verb
أَمۡ تَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ یَسۡمَعُونَ أَوۡ یَعۡقِلُونَۚ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا كَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ بَلۡ هُمۡ أَضَلُّ سَبِیلًا ۝٤٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way
Abdel Haleem: Do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are just like cattle- no, they are further from the path
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Or deemest thou that most of them hear or understand? They are but as the cattle - nay, but they are farther astray
The Poets 26:28 Verb
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."
Abdel Haleem: Moses continued, ‘Lord of the East and West and everything between them. If you would only use your reason!’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He said: Lord of the East and the West and all that is between them, if ye did but understand
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:60 Verb
وَمَاۤ أُوتِیتُم مِّن شَیۡءࣲ فَمَتَـٰعُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَزِینَتُهَاۚ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَیۡرࣱ وَأَبۡقَىٰۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason
Abdel Haleem: Whatever things you have been given for the life of this world are merely [temporary] gratification and vanity: that which is with God is better and more lasting- will you not use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And whatsoever ye have been given is a comfort of the life of the world and an ornament thereof; and that which Allah hath is better and more lasting. Have ye then no sense
The Spider 29:35 Verb
وَلَقَد تَّرَكۡنَا مِنۡهَاۤ ءَایَةَۢ بَیِّنَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٣٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason
Abdel Haleem: We left some [of the town] there as a clear sign for those who use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And verily of that We have left a clear sign for people who have sense
The Spider 29:43 Verb
وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡأَمۡثَـٰلُ نَضۡرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِۖ وَمَا یَعۡقِلُهَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡعَـٰلِمُونَ ۝٤٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge
Abdel Haleem: Such are the comparisons We draw for people, though only the wise can grasp them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: As for these similitudes, We coin them for mankind, but none will grasp their meaning save the wise
The Spider 29:63 Verb
وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّن نَّزَّلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَوۡتِهَا لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say " Allah ." Say, "Praise to Allah "; but most of them do not reason
Abdel Haleem: If you ask them, ‘Who sends water down from the sky and gives life with it to the earth after it has died?’ they are sure to say, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Praise belongs to God!’ Truly, most of them do not use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And if thou wert to ask them: Who causeth water to come down from the sky, and therewith reviveth the earth after its death? they verily would say: Allah. Say: Praise be to Allah! But most of them have no sense
The Cow 2:164 Verb
إِنَّ فِی خَلۡقِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلَّتِی تَجۡرِی فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِمَا یَنفَعُ ٱلنَّاسَ وَمَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مِن مَّاۤءࣲ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَا وَبَثَّ فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ دَاۤبَّةࣲ وَتَصۡرِیفِ ٱلرِّیَـٰحِ وَٱلسَّحَابِ ٱلۡمُسَخَّرِ بَیۡنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٦٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason
Abdel Haleem: In the creation of the heavens and earth; in the alternation of night and day; in the ships that sail the seas with goods for people; in the water which God sends down from the sky to give life to the earth when it has been barren, scattering all kinds of creatures over it; in the changing of the winds and clouds that run their appointed courses between the sky and earth: there are signs in all these for those who use their minds
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of night and day, and the ships which run upon the sea with that which is of use to men, and the water which Allah sendeth down from the sky, thereby reviving the earth after its death, and dispersing all kinds of beasts therein, and (in) the ordinance of the winds, and the clouds obedient between heaven and earth: are signs (of Allah's Sovereignty) for people who have sense
The Cow 2:170 Verb
وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ نَتَّبِعُ مَاۤ أَلۡفَیۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَنَاۤۚ أَوَ لَوۡ كَانَ ءَابَاۤؤُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٧٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided
Abdel Haleem: But when it is said to them, ‘Follow the message that God has sent down,’ they answer, ‘We follow the ways of our fathers.’ What! Even though their fathers understood nothing and were not guided
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when it is said unto them: Follow that which Allah hath revealed, they say: We follow that wherein we found our fathers. What! Even though their fathers were wholly unintelligent and had no guidance
The Cow 2:171 Verb
وَمَثَلُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِی یَنۡعِقُ بِمَا لَا یَسۡمَعُ إِلَّا دُعَاۤءࣰ وَنِدَاۤءࣰۚ صُمُّۢ بُكۡمٌ عُمۡیࣱ فَهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٧١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries cattle or sheep - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand
Abdel Haleem: Calling to disbelieversis like a herdsman calling to things that hear nothing but a shout and a cry: they are deaf, dumb, and blind, and they understand nothing
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: The likeness of those who disbelieve (in relation to the messenger) is as the likeness of one who calleth unto that which heareth naught except a shout and cry. Deaf, dumb, blind, therefore they have no sense
The Cow 2:242 Verb
كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُبَیِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٤٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you might use reason
Abdel Haleem: In this way God makes His revelations clear to you, so that you may grow in understanding
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Thus Allah expoundeth unto you His revelations so that ye may understand
The Cow 2:44 Verb
۞ أَتَأۡمُرُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ بِٱلۡبِرِّ وَتَنسَوۡنَ أَنفُسَكُمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ تَتۡلُونَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason
Abdel Haleem: How can you tell people to do what is right and forget to do it yourselves, even though you recite the Scripture? Have you no sense
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Enjoin ye righteousness upon mankind while ye yourselves forget (to practise it)? And ye are readers of the Scripture! Have ye then no sense
The Cow 2:73 Verb
فَقُلۡنَا ٱضۡرِبُوهُ بِبَعۡضِهَاۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُحۡیِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ وَیُرِیكُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٧٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So, We said, "Strike the slain man with part of it." Thus does Allah bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you might reason
Abdel Haleem: We said, ‘Strike the [body] with a part of [the cow]’: thus God brings the dead to life and shows His signs so that you may understand
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And We said: Smite him with some of it. Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His portents so that ye may understand
The Cow 2:75 Verb
۞ أَفَتَطۡمَعُونَ أَن یُؤۡمِنُوا۟ لَكُمۡ وَقَدۡ كَانَ فَرِیقࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ یَسۡمَعُونَ كَلَـٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ یُحَرِّفُونَهُۥ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا عَقَلُوهُ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٧٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allah and then distort the Torah after they had understood it while they were knowing
Abdel Haleem: So can you [believers] hope that such people will believe you, when some of them used to hear the words of God and then deliberately twist them, even when they understood them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Have ye any hope that they will be true to you when a party of them used to listen to the word of Allah, then used to change it, after they had understood it, knowingly
The Cow 2:76 Verb
وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَا بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ قَالُوۤا۟ أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُم بِمَا فَتَحَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ لِیُحَاۤجُّوكُم بِهِۦ عِندَ رَبِّكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٧٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We have believed"; but when they are alone with one another, they say, "Do you talk to them about what Allah has revealed to you so they can argue with you about it before your Lord?" Then will you not reason
Abdel Haleem: When they meet the believers, they say, ‘We too believe.’ But when they are alone with each other they say, ‘How could you tell them about God’s revelation [to us]? They will be able to use it to argue against you before your Lord! Have you no sense?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe. But when they go apart one with another they say: Prate ye to them of that which Allah hath disclosed to you that they may contend with you before your Lord concerning it? Have ye then no sense
The Romans, The Byzantines 30:24 Verb
وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ یُرِیكُمُ ٱلۡبَرۡقَ خَوۡفࣰا وَطَمَعࣰا وَیُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَیُحۡیِۦ بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَاۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And of His signs is [that] He shows you the lightening [causing] fear and aspiration, and He sends down rain from the sky by which He brings to life the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that are signs for a people who use reason
Abdel Haleem: Among His signs, too, are that He shows you the lightning that terrifies and inspires hope; that He sends water down from the sky to restore the earth to life after death. There truly are signs in this for those who use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And of His signs is this: He showeth you the lightning for a fear and for a hope, and sendeth down water from the sky, and thereby quickeneth the earth after her death. Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who understand
The Romans, The Byzantines 30:28 Verb
ضَرَبَ لَكُم مَّثَلࣰا مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡۖ هَل لَّكُم مِّن مَّا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُم مِّن شُرَكَاۤءَ فِی مَا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ فَأَنتُمۡ فِیهِ سَوَاۤءࣱ تَخَافُونَهُمۡ كَخِیفَتِكُمۡ أَنفُسَكُمۡۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): He presents to you an example from yourselves. Do you have among those whom your right hands possess any partners in what We have provided for you so that you are equal therein [and] would fear them as your fear of one another [within a partnership]? Thus do We detail the verses for a people who use reason
Abdel Haleem: He gives you this example, drawn from your own lives: do you make your slaves full partners with an equal share in what We have given you? Do you fear them as you fear each other? This is how We make Our messages clear to those who use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He coineth for you a similitude of yourselves. Have ye, from among those whom your right hands possess, partners in the wealth We have bestowed upon you, equal with you in respect thereof, so that ye fear them as ye fear each other (that ye ascribe unto Us partners out of that which We created)? Thus We display the revelations for people who have sense
Ya Sin, Ya-Seen 36:62 Verb
وَلَقَدۡ أَضَلَّ مِنكُمۡ جِبِلࣰّا كَثِیرًاۖ أَفَلَمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And he had already led astray from among you much of creation, so did you not use reason
Abdel Haleem: He has led great numbers of you astray. Did you not use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Yet he hath led astray of you a great multitude. Had ye then no sense
Ya Sin, Ya-Seen 36:68 Verb
وَمَن نُّعَمِّرۡهُ نُنَكِّسۡهُ فِی ٱلۡخَلۡقِۚ أَفَلَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And he to whom We grant long life We reverse in creation; so will they not understand
Abdel Haleem: If We extend anyone’s life, We reverse his development. Do they not use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He whom we bring unto old age, We reverse him in creation (making him go back to weakness after strength). Have ye then no sense
Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn up in Ranks, The Rangers 37:138 Verb
وَبِٱلَّیۡلِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٣٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And at night. Then will you not use reason
Abdel Haleem: and night: will you not take heed
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And at night-time; have ye then no sense
The Troops, Throngs, The Companies 39:43 Verb
أَمِ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ شُفَعَاۤءَۚ قُلۡ أَوَ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ لَا یَمۡلِكُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Or have they taken other than Allah as intercessors? Say, "Even though they do not possess [power over] anything, nor do they reason?"
Abdel Haleem: Yet they take intercessors besides God! Say, ‘Even though these have no power or understanding?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Or choose they intercessors other than Allah? Say: What! Even though they have power over nothing and have no intelligence
The Family of Imran, The House of Imran 3:118 Verb
یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ بِطَانَةࣰ مِّن دُونِكُمۡ لَا یَأۡلُونَكُمۡ خَبَالࣰا وَدُّوا۟ مَا عَنِتُّمۡ قَدۡ بَدَتِ ٱلۡبَغۡضَاۤءُ مِنۡ أَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡ وَمَا تُخۡفِی صُدُورُهُمۡ أَكۡبَرُۚ قَدۡ بَیَّنَّا لَكُمُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١١٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason
Abdel Haleem: You who believe, do not take for your intimates such outsiders as spare no effort to ruin you and want to see you suffer: their hatred is evident from their mouths, but what their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made Our revelations clear for you; will you not use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O ye who believe! Take not for intimates others than your own folk, who would spare no pains to ruin you; they love to hamper you. Hatred is revealed by (the utterance of) their mouths, but that which their breasts hide is greater. We have made plain for you the revelations if ye will understand
The Family of Imran, The House of Imran 3:65 Verb
یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لِمَ تُحَاۤجُّونَ فِیۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَتِ ٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةُ وَٱلۡإِنجِیلُ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): O People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham while the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Then will you not reason
Abdel Haleem: People of the Book, why do you argue about Abraham when the Torah and the Gospels were not revealed until after his time? Do you not understand
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O People of the Scripture! Why will ye argue about Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed till after him? Have ye then no sense
The Forgiver, The Forgiving One 40:67 Verb
هُوَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابࣲ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطۡفَةࣲ ثُمَّ مِنۡ عَلَقَةࣲ ثُمَّ یُخۡرِجُكُمۡ طِفۡلࣰا ثُمَّ لِتَبۡلُغُوۤا۟ أَشُدَّكُمۡ ثُمَّ لِتَكُونُوا۟ شُیُوخࣰاۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن یُتَوَفَّىٰ مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَلِتَبۡلُغُوۤا۟ أَجَلࣰا مُّسَمࣰّى وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): It is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term; and perhaps you will use reason
Abdel Haleem: It is He who created you from dust, then from a drop of fluid, then from a tiny, clinging form, then He brought you forth as infants, then He allowed you to reach maturity, then He let you grow old- though some of you die sooner- and reach your appointed term so that you may reflect
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He it is Who created you from dust, then from a drop (of seed) then from a clot, then bringeth you forth as a child, then (ordaineth) that ye attain full strength and afterward that ye become old men - though some among you die before - and that ye reach an appointed term, that haply ye may understand
Ornaments of Gold, Luxury, The Embellishment 43:3 Verb
إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَ ٰنًا عَرَبِیࣰّا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand
Abdel Haleem: We have made it a Quran in Arabic so that you [people] may understand
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Lo! We have appointed it a Lecture, in Arabic that haply ye may understand
The Kneeling, Crouching 45:5 Verb
وَٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَمَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مِن رِّزۡقࣲ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَا وَتَصۡرِیفِ ٱلرِّیَـٰحِ ءَایَـٰتࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And [in] the alternation of night and day and [in] what Allah sends down from the sky of provision and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and [in His] directing of the winds are signs for a people who reason
Abdel Haleem: in the alternation of night and day, in the rain God provides, sending it down from the sky and reviving the dead earth with it, and in His shifting of the winds there are signs for those who use their reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And the difference of night and day and the provision that Allah sendeth down from the sky and thereby quickeneth the earth after her death, and the ordering of the winds, are portents for a people who have sense
The Private Apartments, The Inner Apartments, The Chambers 49:4 Verb
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُنَادُونَكَ مِن وَرَاۤءِ ٱلۡحُجُرَ ٰتِ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Indeed, those who call you, [O Muhammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason
Abdel Haleem: but most of those who shout to you [Prophet] from outside your private rooms lack understanding
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Lo! those who call thee from behind the private apartments, most of them have no sense
The Iron 57:17 Verb
ٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحۡیِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَاۚ قَدۡ بَیَّنَّا لَكُمُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand
Abdel Haleem: Remember that God revives the earth after it dies; We have made Our revelation clear to you so that you may use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Know that Allah quickeneth the earth after its death. We have made clear Our revelations for you, that haply ye may understand
Exile, Banishment 59:14 Verb
لَا یُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمۡ جَمِیعًا إِلَّا فِی قُرࣰى مُّحَصَّنَةٍ أَوۡ مِن وَرَاۤءِ جُدُرِۭۚ بَأۡسُهُم بَیۡنَهُمۡ شَدِیدࣱۚ تَحۡسَبُهُمۡ جَمِیعࣰا وَقُلُوبُهُمۡ شَتَّىٰۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They will not fight you all except within fortified cities or from behind walls. Their violence among themselves is severe. You think they are together, but their hearts are diverse. That is because they are a people who do not reason
Abdel Haleem: Even united they would never fight you, except from within fortified strongholds or behind high walls. There is much hostility between them: you think they are united but their hearts are divided because they are people devoid of reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They will not fight against you in a body save in fortified villages or from behind walls. Their adversity among themselves is very great. Ye think of them as a whole whereas their hearts are divers. That is because they are a folk who have no sense
The Table, The Table Spread 5:103 Verb
مَا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَحِیرَةࣲ وَلَا سَاۤىِٕبَةࣲ وَلَا وَصِیلَةࣲ وَلَا حَامࣲ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَۖ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٠٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Allah has not appointed [such innovations as] Bahira, Sa’ibah, WaYilah, or Ham. But those who disbelieve invent falsehood about Allah , and most of them do not reason
Abdel Haleem: God did not institute the dedication of such things as bahira, saiba, wasila, or ham to idols; but the disbelievers invent lies about God. Most of them do not use reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Allah hath not appointed anything in the nature of a Bahirah or a Sa'ibah or a Wasilah or a Hami, but those who disbelieve invent a lie against Allah. Most of them have no sense
The Table, The Table Spread 5:58 Verb
وَإِذَا نَادَیۡتُمۡ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ٱتَّخَذُوهَا هُزُوࣰا وَلَعِبࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٥٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule and amusement. That is because they are a people who do not use reason
Abdel Haleem: When you make the call to prayer, they ridicule it and make fun of it: this is because they are people who do not reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when ye call to prayer they take it for a jest and sport. That is because they are a folk who understand not
The Sovereignty, Control, The Kingdom 67:10 Verb
وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡ كُنَّا نَسۡمَعُ أَوۡ نَعۡقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِیۤ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِیرِ ۝١٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."
Abdel Haleem: They will say, ‘If only we had listened, or reasoned, we would not be with the inhabitants of the blazing fire,’ an
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And they say: Had we been wont to listen or have sense, we had not been among the dwellers in the flames
Cattle, Livestock 6:151 Verb
۞ قُلۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ أَتۡلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡۖ أَلَّا تُشۡرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَبِٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَیۡنِ إِحۡسَـٰنࣰاۖ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوۤا۟ أَوۡلَـٰدَكُم مِّنۡ إِمۡلَـٰقࣲ نَّحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكُمۡ وَإِیَّاهُمۡۖ وَلَا تَقۡرَبُوا۟ ٱلۡفَوَ ٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَۖ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوا۟ ٱلنَّفۡسَ ٱلَّتِی حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ وَصَّىٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٥١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason."
Abdel Haleem: Say, ‘Come! I will tell you what your Lord has really forbidden you. Do not ascribe anything as a partner to Him; be good to your parents; do not kill your children in fear of poverty’- We will provide for you and for them- ‘ stay well away from committing obscenities, whether openly or in secret; do not take the life God has made sacred, except by right. This is what He commands you to do: perhaps you will use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say: Come, I will recite unto you that which your Lord hath made a sacred duty for you: That ye ascribe no thing as partner unto Him and that ye do good to parents, and that ye slay not your children because of penury - We provide for you and for them - and that ye draw not nigh to lewd things whether open or concealed. And that ye slay not the life which Allah hath made sacred, save in the course of justice. This He hath command you, in order that ye may discern
Cattle, Livestock 6:32 Verb
وَمَا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۤ إِلَّا لَعِبࣱ وَلَهۡوࣱۖ وَلَلدَّارُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٣٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah , so will you not reason
Abdel Haleem: The life of this world is nothing but a game and a distraction; the Home in the Hereafter is best for those who are aware of God. Why will you [people] not understand
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Naught is the life of the world save a pastime and a spot. Better far is the abode of the Hereafter for those who keep their duty (to Allah). Have ye then no sense
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:169 Verb
فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ خَلۡفࣱ وَرِثُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یَأۡخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ وَیَقُولُونَ سَیُغۡفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن یَأۡتِهِمۡ عَرَضࣱ مِّثۡلُهُۥ یَأۡخُذُوهُۚ أَلَمۡ یُؤۡخَذۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّیثَـٰقُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ أَن لَّا یَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَقَّ وَدَرَسُوا۟ مَا فِیهِۗ وَٱلدَّارُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٦٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture taken from them that they would not say about Allah except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah , so will you not use reason
Abdel Haleem: and they were succeeded by generations who, although they inherited the Scripture, took the fleeting gains of this lower world, saying, ‘We shall be forgiven,’ and indeed taking them again if other such gains came their way. Was a pledge not taken from them, writ-ten in the Scripture, to say nothing but the truth about God? And they have studied its contents well. For those who are mindful of God, the Hereafter is better. ‘Why do you not use your reason?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And a generation hath succeeded them who inherited the scriptures. They grasp the goods of this low life (as the price of evil-doing) and say: It will be forgiven us. And if there came to them (again) the offer of the like, they would accept it (and would sin again). ۞ إِنَّ شَرَّ ٱلدَّوَاۤبِّ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلصُّمُّ ٱلۡبُكۡمُ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason
Abdel Haleem: the worst creatures in God’s eyes are those who are [wilfully] deaf and dumb, who do not reason
