The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills 46:15

وَوَصَّيْنَا wawaṣṣaynā
And We have enjoined V
ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ l-insāna

بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ biwālidayhi

إِحْسَٰنًا iḥ'sānan
kindness Noun
حَمَلَتْهُ ḥamalathu
Carried him V
أُمُّهُۥ ummuhu
his mother Noun
كُرْهًا kur'han
(with) hardship Noun
وَوَضَعَتْهُ wawaḍaʿathu
and gave birth to him V
كُرْهًا kur'han
(with) hardship Noun
وَحَمْلُهُۥ waḥamluhu
And (the) bearing of him Noun
وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ wafiṣāluhu
and (the) weaning of him Noun
ثَلَٰثُونَ thalāthūna
(is) thirty Noun
شَهْرًا shahran
month(s) Noun
حَتَّىٰٓ ḥattā
until Prep
إِذَا idhā
when Noun
بَلَغَ balagha
he reaches V
أَشُدَّهُۥ ashuddahu
his maturity Noun
وَبَلَغَ wabalagha
and reaches V
أَرْبَعِينَ arbaʿīna
forty Noun
سَنَةً sanatan

قَالَ qāla

رَبِّ rabbi

أَوْزِعْنِىٓ awziʿ'nī
grant me (the) power V

ٱلَّتِىٓ allatī

وَٰلِدَىَّ wālidayya

وَأَنْ wa-an

أَعْمَلَ aʿmala

صَٰلِحًا ṣāliḥan
righteous (deeds) Noun
تَرْضَىٰهُ tarḍāhu
which please You V
وَأَصْلِحْ wa-aṣliḥ
and make righteous V
لِى lī

فِى fī
among Prep
ذُرِّيَّتِىٓ dhurriyyatī
my offspring Noun
إِنِّى innī
indeed Prep
تُبْتُ tub'tu
I turn V
إِلَيْكَ ilayka
to You Prep
وَإِنِّى wa-innī
and indeed, I am Prep
مِنَ mina
of Prep
ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ l-mus'limīna
those who submit Noun

We have commanded man to be good to his parents: his mother struggled to carry him and struggled to give birth to him- his bearing and weaning took a full thirty months. When he has grown to manhood and reached the age of forty he [may] say, ‘Lord, help me to be truly grateful for Your favours to me and to my parents; help me to do good work that pleases You; make my offspring good. I turn to You; I am one of those who devote themselves to You.’

Arabic Text

وَوَصَّیۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ بِوَ ٰلِدَیۡهِ إِحۡسَـٰنًاۖ حَمَلَتۡهُ أُمُّهُۥ كُرۡهࣰا وَوَضَعَتۡهُ كُرۡهࣰاۖ وَحَمۡلُهُۥ وَفِصَـٰلُهُۥ ثَلَـٰثُونَ شَهۡرًاۚ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥ وَبَلَغَ أَرۡبَعِینَ سَنَةࣰ قَالَ رَبِّ أَوۡزِعۡنِیۤ أَنۡ أَشۡكُرَ نِعۡمَتَكَ ٱلَّتِیۤ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَیَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَ ٰلِدَیَّ وَأَنۡ أَعۡمَلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا تَرۡضَىٰهُ وَأَصۡلِحۡ لِی فِی ذُرِّیَّتِیۤۖ إِنِّی تُبۡتُ إِلَیۡكَ وَإِنِّی مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝١٥

wawaṣṣaynā l-insāna biwālidayhi iḥ'sānan ḥamalathu ummuhu kur'han wawaḍaʿathu kur'han waḥamluhu wafiṣāluhu thalāthūna shahran ḥattā idhā balagha ashuddahu wabalagha arbaʿīna sanatan qāla rabbi awziʿ'nī an ashkura niʿ'mataka allatī anʿamta ʿalayya waʿalā wālidayya wa-an aʿmala ṣāliḥan tarḍāhu wa-aṣliḥ lī fī dhurriyyatī innī tub'tu ilayka wa-innī mina l-mus'limīn
