The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:176

وَلَوْ walaw
And if Prep
شِئْنَا shi'nā
We willed V
لَرَفَعْنَٰهُ larafaʿnāhu
surely, We (could) have raised him V
بِهَا bihā
with these Noun
وَلَٰكِنَّهُۥٓ walākinnahu
[and] but he Prep
أَخْلَدَ akhlada
adhered V
إِلَى ilā
to Prep
ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi
the earth Noun
وَٱتَّبَعَ wa-ittabaʿa
and followed V
هَوَىٰهُ hawāhu
his (vain) desires Noun
فَمَثَلُهُۥ famathaluhu
So his example Noun
كَمَثَلِ kamathali
(is) like (the) example Noun
ٱلْكَلْبِ l-kalbi
(of) the dog Noun
إِن in
if Prep
تَحْمِلْ taḥmil
you attack V
عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi
[on] him Prep
يَلْهَثْ yalhath
he lolls out his tongue V
أَوْ aw
or Prep
تَتْرُكْهُ tatruk'hu
if you leave him V
يَلْهَث yalhath
he lolls out his tongue V
ذَّٰلِكَ dhālika
That Noun
مَثَلُ mathalu
(is the) example Noun
ٱلْقَوْمِ l-qawmi
(of) the people Noun
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna
who Noun
كَذَّبُوا۟ kadhabū
denied V
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا biāyātinā
[in] Our Signs Noun
فَٱقْصُصِ fa-uq'ṣuṣi
So relate V
ٱلْقَصَصَ l-qaṣaṣa
the story Noun
لَعَلَّهُمْ laʿallahum
so that they may Prep
يَتَفَكَّرُونَ yatafakkarūna
reflect V

if it had been Our will, We could have used these signs to raise him high, but instead he clung to the earth and followed his own desires- he was like a dog that pants with a lolling tongue whether you drive it away or leave it alone. Such is the image of those who reject Our signs. Tell them the story so that they may reflect

وَلَوۡ شِئۡنَا لَرَفَعۡنَـٰهُ بِهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّهُۥۤ أَخۡلَدَ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُۚ فَمَثَلُهُۥ كَمَثَلِ ٱلۡكَلۡبِ إِن تَحۡمِلۡ عَلَیۡهِ یَلۡهَثۡ أَوۡ تَتۡرُكۡهُ یَلۡهَثۚ ذَّ ٰلِكَ مَثَلُ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۚ فَٱقۡصُصِ ٱلۡقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝١٧٦

walaw shi'nā larafaʿnāhu bihā walākinnahu akhlada ilā l-arḍi wa-ittabaʿa hawāhu famathaluhu kamathali l-kalbi in taḥmil ʿalayhi yalhath aw tatruk'hu yalhath dhālika mathalu l-qawmi alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā fa-uq'ṣuṣi l-qaṣaṣa laʿallahum yatafakkarūn
