قَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ أَرَهۡطِیۤ أَعَزُّ عَلَیۡكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱتَّخَذۡتُمُوهُ وَرَاۤءَكُمۡ ظِهۡرِیًّاۖ إِنَّ رَبِّی بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ مُحِیطࣱ ۝٩٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): He said, "O my people, is my family more respected for power by you than Allah ? But you put Him behind your backs [in neglect]. Indeed, my Lord is encompassing of what you do
Abdel Haleem: He said, ‘My people, is my family stronger in your estimation than God? And have you put Him behind you? My Lord surrounds everything you do
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He said: O my people! Is my family more to be honoured by you than Allah? and ye put Him behind you, neglected! Lo! my Lord surroundeth what ye do
The Thunder 13:33 Noun
أَفَمَنۡ هُوَ قَاۤىِٕمٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡۗ وَجَعَلُوا۟ لِلَّهِ شُرَكَاۤءَ قُلۡ سَمُّوهُمۡۚ أَمۡ تُنَبِّءُونَهُۥ بِمَا لَا یَعۡلَمُ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَم بِظَـٰهِرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِۗ بَلۡ زُیِّنَ لِلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مَكۡرُهُمۡ وَصُدُّوا۟ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِۗ وَمَن یُضۡلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنۡ هَادࣲ ۝٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Then is He who is a maintainer of every soul, [knowing] what it has earned, [like any other]? But to Allah they have attributed partners. Say, "Name them. Or do you inform Him of that which He knows not upon the earth or of what is apparent of speech?" Rather, their [own] plan has been made attractive to those who disbelieve, and they have been averted from the way. And whomever Allah leaves astray - there will be for him no guide
Abdel Haleem: Is He who stands over every soul marking its action [in need of any partner]? Yet they ascribe partners to God. Say, ‘Name them,’ or, ‘Can you tell Him about something on the earth He does not know to exist, or is this just a display of words?’ But the things they devise are made alluring to the disbelievers and they are barred from the [right] path: no one can guide those God leaves to stray
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Is He Who is aware of the deserts of every soul (as he who is aware of nothing)? Yet they ascribe unto Allah partners. Say: Name them. Is it that ye would inform Him of something which He knoweth not in the earth? Or is it but a way of speaking? Nay but their contrivance is made seeming fair for those who disbelieve and they are kept from the right road. He whom Allah sendeth astray, for him there is no guide
Children of Israel, The Israelites 17:88 Noun
قُل لَّىِٕنِ ٱجۡتَمَعَتِ ٱلۡإِنسُ وَٱلۡجِنُّ عَلَىٰۤ أَن یَأۡتُوا۟ بِمِثۡلِ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ لَا یَأۡتُونَ بِمِثۡلِهِۦ وَلَوۡ كَانَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ لِبَعۡضࣲ ظَهِیرࣰا ۝٨٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."
Abdel Haleem: Say, ‘Even if all mankind and jinn came together to produce something like this Quran, they could not produce anything like it, however much they helped each other.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say: Verily, though mankind and the jinn should assemble to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof though they were helpers one of another
The Cave 18:22 Noun
سَیَقُولُونَ ثَلَـٰثَةࣱ رَّابِعُهُمۡ كَلۡبُهُمۡ وَیَقُولُونَ خَمۡسَةࣱ سَادِسُهُمۡ كَلۡبُهُمۡ رَجۡمَۢا بِٱلۡغَیۡبِۖ وَیَقُولُونَ سَبۡعَةࣱ وَثَامِنُهُمۡ كَلۡبُهُمۡۚ قُل رَّبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِعِدَّتِهِم مَّا یَعۡلَمُهُمۡ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣱۗ فَلَا تُمَارِ فِیهِمۡ إِلَّا مِرَاۤءࣰ ظَـٰهِرࣰا وَلَا تَسۡتَفۡتِ فِیهِم مِّنۡهُمۡ أَحَدࣰا ۝٢٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog - guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muhammad], "My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument and do not inquire about them among [the speculators] from anyone."
Abdel Haleem: [Some] say, ‘The sleepers were three, and their dog made four,’ others say, ‘They were five, and the dog made six’- guessing in the dark- and some say, ‘They were seven, and their dog made eight.’ Say [Prophet], ‘My Lord knows best how many they were.’ Only a few have real knowledge about them, so do not argue, but stick to what is clear, and do not ask any of these people about them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: (Some) will say: They were three, their dog the fourth, and (some) say: Five, their dog the sixth, guessing at random; and (some) say: Seven, and their dog the eighth. Say (O Muhammad): My Lord is Best Aware of their number. None knoweth them save a few. So contend not concerning them except with an outward contending, and ask not any of them to pronounce concerning them
The Prophets 21:39 Noun
لَوۡ یَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ حِینَ لَا یَكُفُّونَ عَن وُجُوهِهِمُ ٱلنَّارَ وَلَا عَن ظُهُورِهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یُنصَرُونَ ۝٣٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): If those who disbelieved but knew the time when they will not avert the Fire from their faces or from their backs and they will not be aided..
Abdel Haleem: If the disbelievers only knew, the time will arrive when they will not be able to ward off the Fire from their faces or their backs, and they will get no help
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: If those who disbelieved but knew the time when they will not be able to drive off the fire from their faces and from their backs, and they will not be helped
The Light 24:58 Noun
یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لِیَسۡتَءۡذِنكُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُمۡ وَٱلَّذِینَ لَمۡ یَبۡلُغُوا۟ ٱلۡحُلُمَ مِنكُمۡ ثَلَـٰثَ مَرَّ ٰتࣲۚ مِّن قَبۡلِ صَلَوٰةِ ٱلۡفَجۡرِ وَحِینَ تَضَعُونَ ثِیَابَكُم مِّنَ ٱلظَّهِیرَةِ وَمِنۢ بَعۡدِ صَلَوٰةِ ٱلۡعِشَاۤءِۚ ثَلَـٰثُ عَوۡرَ ٰتࣲ لَّكُمۡۚ لَیۡسَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَلَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ جُنَاحُۢ بَعۡدَهُنَّۚ طَوَّ ٰفُونَ عَلَیۡكُم بَعۡضُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ یُبَیِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٥٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you - some of you, among others. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses; and Allah is Knowing and Wise
Abdel Haleem: Believers, your slaves and any who have not yet reached puberty should ask your permission to come in at three times of day: before the dawn prayer; when you lay your garments aside in the midday heat; and after the evening prayer. These are your three times for privacy; at other times, there is no blame on you or them if you move around each other freely. In this way God makes messages clear: God is all knowing, all wise
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O ye who believe! Let your slaves, and those of you who have not come to puberty, ask leave of you at three times (before they come into your presence): Before the prayer of dawn, and when ye lay aside your raiment for the heat of noon, and after the prayer of night. Three times of privacy for you. It is no sin for them or for you at other times, when some of you go round attendant upon others (if they come into your presence without leave). Thus Allah maketh clear the revelations for you. Allah is Knower, Wise
The Criterion, The Standard 25:55 Noun
وَیَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَنفَعُهُمۡ وَلَا یَضُرُّهُمۡۗ وَكَانَ ٱلۡكَافِرُ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ ظَهِیرࣰا ۝٥٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But they worship rather than Allah that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan]
Abdel Haleem: Yet instead of God they worship things that can neither benefit nor harm them: the disbeliever has always turned his back on his Lord
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Yet they worship instead of Allah that which can neither benefit them nor hurt them. The disbeliever was ever a partisan against his Lord
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:17 Noun
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَاۤ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَیَّ فَلَنۡ أَكُونَ ظَهِیرࣰا لِّلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): He said, "My Lord, for the favor You bestowed upon me, I will never be an assistant to the criminals."
Abdel Haleem: He said, ‘My Lord, because of the blessings You have bestowed upon me, I shall never support those who do evil.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He said: My Lord! Forasmuch as Thou hast favoured me, I will nevermore be a supporter of the guilty
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:86 Noun
وَمَا كُنتَ تَرۡجُوۤا۟ أَن یُلۡقَىٰۤ إِلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ إِلَّا رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّن رَّبِّكَۖ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ ظَهِیرࣰا لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٨٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And you were not expecting that the Book would be conveyed to you, but [it is] a mercy from your Lord. So do not be an assistant to the disbelievers
Abdel Haleem: You yourself could not have expected the Scripture to be sent to you; it came only as a mercy from your Lord. So give no help to the disbelievers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Thou hadst no hope that the Scripture would be inspired in thee; but it is a mercy from thy Lord, so never be a helper to the disbelievers
The Cow 2:101 Noun
وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمۡ رَسُولࣱ مِّنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقࣱ لِّمَا مَعَهُمۡ نَبَذَ فَرِیقࣱ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ كِتَـٰبَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَاۤءَ ظُهُورِهِمۡ كَأَنَّهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٠١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when a messenger from Allah came to them confirming that which was with them, a party of those who had been given the Scripture threw the Scripture of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know [what it contained]
Abdel Haleem: When God sent them a messenger confirming the Scriptures they already had, some of those who had received the Scripture before threw the Book of God over their shoulders as if they had no knowledge
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when there cometh unto them a messenger from Allah, confirming that which they possess, a party of those who have received the Scripture fling the Scripture of Allah behind their backs as if they knew not
The Cow 2:189 Noun
۞ یَسۡءَلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡأَهِلَّةِۖ قُلۡ هِیَ مَوَ ٰقِیتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَٱلۡحَجِّۗ وَلَیۡسَ ٱلۡبِرُّ بِأَن تَأۡتُوا۟ ٱلۡبُیُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلۡبِرَّ مَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰۗ وَأۡتُوا۟ ٱلۡبُیُوتَ مِنۡ أَبۡوَ ٰبِهَاۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١٨٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the new moons. Say, "They are measurements of time for the people and for hajj." And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allah. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allah that you may succeed
Abdel Haleem: They ask you [Prophet] about crescent moons. Say, ‘They show the times appointed for people, and for the pilgrimage.’ Goodness does not consist of entering houses by the back [door]; the truly good person is the one who is mindful of God. So enter your houses by their [main] doors and be mindful of God so that you may prosper
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They ask thee, (O Muhammad), of new moons, say: They are fixed seasons for mankind and for the pilgrimage. It is not righteousness that ye go to houses by the backs thereof (as do the idolaters at certain seasons), but the righteous man is he who wardeth off (evil). So go to houses by the gates thereof, and observe your duty to Allah, that ye may be successful
The Romans, The Byzantines 30:7 Noun
یَعۡلَمُونَ ظَـٰهِرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ هُمۡ غَـٰفِلُونَ ۝٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they, of the Hereafter, are unaware
Abdel Haleem: they only know the outer surface of this present life and are heedless of the life to come
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They know only some appearance of the life of the world, and are heedless of the Hereafter
Luqman, Lukman 31:20 Noun
أَلَمۡ تَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَأَسۡبَغَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ نِعَمَهُۥ ظَـٰهِرَةࣰ وَبَاطِنَةࣰۗ وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن یُجَـٰدِلُ فِی ٱللَّهِ بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲ وَلَا هُدࣰى وَلَا كِتَـٰبࣲ مُّنِیرࣲ ۝٢٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him]
Abdel Haleem: [People], do you not see how God has made what is in the heavens and on the earth useful to you, and has lavished His bless-ings on you both outwardly and inwardly? Yet some people argue about God, without knowledge or guidance or an illuminating scripture
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: See ye not how Allah hath made serviceable unto you whatsoever is in the skies and whatsoever is in the earth and hath loaded you with His favours both without and within? Yet of mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah, without knowledge or guidance or a scripture giving light
Saba, Sheba 34:18 Noun
وَجَعَلۡنَا بَیۡنَهُمۡ وَبَیۡنَ ٱلۡقُرَى ٱلَّتِی بَـٰرَكۡنَا فِیهَا قُرࣰى ظَـٰهِرَةࣰ وَقَدَّرۡنَا فِیهَا ٱلسَّیۡرَۖ سِیرُوا۟ فِیهَا لَیَالِیَ وَأَیَّامًا ءَامِنِینَ ۝١٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We placed between them and the cities which We had blessed [many] visible cities. And We determined between them the [distances of] journey, [saying], "Travel between them by night or day in safety."
Abdel Haleem: Also, We had placed, between them and the towns We had blessed, other towns within sight of one another to which they could travel easily- ‘ Travel safely in this land by night and by day’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And We set, between them and the towns which We had blessed, towns easy to be seen, and We made the stage between them easy, (saying): Travel in them safely both by night and day
Saba, Sheba 34:22 Noun
قُلِ ٱدۡعُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ زَعَمۡتُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَا یَمۡلِكُونَ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةࣲ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَلَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا لَهُمۡ فِیهِمَا مِن شِرۡكࣲ وَمَا لَهُۥ مِنۡهُم مِّن ظَهِیرࣲ ۝٢٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, [O Muhammad], "Invoke those you claim [as deities] besides Allah ." They do not possess an atom's weight [of ability] in the heavens or on the earth, and they do not have therein any partnership [with Him], nor is there for Him from among them any assistant
Abdel Haleem: Say, ‘Pray to your so-called gods besides God: they do not control even the weight of a speck of dust in heaven or earth, nor do they have any share in them, nor are any of them any help to God
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say (O Muhammad): Call upon those whom ye set up beside Allah! They possess not an atom's weight either in the heavens or in the earth, nor have they any share in either, nor hath He an auxiliary among them
The Angels, Originator, The Creator 35:45 Noun
وَلَوۡ یُؤَاخِذُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّاسَ بِمَا كَسَبُوا۟ مَا تَرَكَ عَلَىٰ ظَهۡرِهَا مِن دَاۤبَّةࣲ وَلَـٰكِن یُؤَخِّرُهُمۡ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّىۖ فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ أَجَلُهُمۡ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِعِبَادِهِۦ بَصِیرَۢا ۝٤٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if Allah were to impose blame on the people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon the earth any creature. But He defers them for a specified term. And when their time comes, then indeed Allah has ever been, of His servants, Seeing
Abdel Haleem: If God were to punish people [at once] for the wrong they have done, there would not be a single creature left on the surface of the earth. He gives them respite for a stated time and, whenever their time comes, God has been watching His servants
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: If Allah took mankind to task by that which they deserve, He would not leave a living creature on the surface of the earth; but He reprieveth them unto an appointed term, and when their term cometh - then verily (they will know that) Allah is ever Seer of His slaves
The Family of Imran, The House of Imran 3:187 Noun
وَإِذۡ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِیثَـٰقَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ لَتُبَیِّنُنَّهُۥ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَكۡتُمُونَهُۥ فَنَبَذُوهُ وَرَاۤءَ ظُهُورِهِمۡ وَٱشۡتَرَوۡا۟ بِهِۦ ثَمَنࣰا قَلِیلࣰاۖ فَبِئۡسَ مَا یَشۡتَرُونَ ۝١٨٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And [mention, O Muhammad], when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], "You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it." But they threw it away behind their backs and exchanged it for a small price. And wretched is that which they purchased
Abdel Haleem: God took a pledge from those who were given the Scripture- ‘Make it known to people; do not conceal it’- but they tossed the pledge over their shoulders, they bartered it for a small price: what a bad bargain they made
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And (remember) when Allah laid a charge on those who had received the Scripture (He said): Ye are to expound it to mankind and not to hide it. But they flung it behind their backs and bought thereby a little gain. Verily evil is that which they have gained thereby
The Forgiver, The Forgiving One 40:29 Noun
یَـٰقَوۡمِ لَكُمُ ٱلۡمُلۡكُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ ظَـٰهِرِینَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَمَن یَنصُرُنَا مِنۢ بَأۡسِ ٱللَّهِ إِن جَاۤءَنَاۚ قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ مَاۤ أُرِیكُمۡ إِلَّا مَاۤ أَرَىٰ وَمَاۤ أَهۡدِیكُمۡ إِلَّا سَبِیلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ ۝٢٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): O my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land. But who would protect us from the punishment of Allah if it came to us?" Pharaoh said, "I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except to the way of right conduct."
Abdel Haleem: My people, as masters in the land you have the power today, but who will help us against God’s might if it comes upon us?’ But Pharaoh said, ‘I have told you what I think; I am guiding you along the right path.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O my people! Yours is the kingdom to-day, ye being uppermost in the land. But who would save us from the wrath of Allah should it reach us? Pharaoh said: I do but show you what I think, and I do but guide you to wise policy
Council, Consultation, The Counsel 42:33 Noun
إِن یَشَأۡ یُسۡكِنِ ٱلرِّیحَ فَیَظۡلَلۡنَ رَوَاكِدَ عَلَىٰ ظَهۡرِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارࣲ شَكُورٍ ۝٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): If He willed, He could still the wind, and they would remain motionless on its surface. Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful
Abdel Haleem: if He willed, He could bring the wind to a standstill and they would lie motionless on the surface of the sea- there truly are signs in this for anyone who is steadfast and thankful
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: If He will He calmeth the wind so that they keep still upon its surface - Lo! herein verily are signs for every steadfast grateful (heart).
Ornaments of Gold, Luxury, The Embellishment 43:13 Noun
لِتَسۡتَوُۥا۟ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِۦ ثُمَّ تَذۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَةَ رَبِّكُمۡ إِذَا ٱسۡتَوَیۡتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ وَتَقُولُوا۟ سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُۥ مُقۡرِنِینَ ۝١٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say. "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it
Abdel Haleem: so that you may remember your Lord’s grace when you are seated on them and say, ‘Glory be to Him who has given us control over this; we could not have done it by ourselves
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: That ye may mount upon their backs, and may remember your Lord's favour when ye mount thereon, and may say: Glorified be He Who hath subdued these unto us, and we were not capable (of subduing them)
The Iron 57:13 Noun
یَوۡمَ یَقُولُ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ لِلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱنظُرُونَا نَقۡتَبِسۡ مِن نُّورِكُمۡ قِیلَ ٱرۡجِعُوا۟ وَرَاۤءَكُمۡ فَٱلۡتَمِسُوا۟ نُورࣰاۖ فَضُرِبَ بَیۡنَهُم بِسُورࣲ لَّهُۥ بَابُۢ بَاطِنُهُۥ فِیهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَةُ وَظَـٰهِرُهُۥ مِن قِبَلِهِ ٱلۡعَذَابُ ۝١٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, "Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light." It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek light." And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment
Abdel Haleem: On the same Day, the hypocrites, both men and women, will say to the believers, ‘Wait for us! Let us have some of your light!’ They will be told, ‘Go back and look for a light.’ A wall with a door will be erected between them: inside it lies mercy, outside lies torment
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: On the day when the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women will say unto those who believe: Look on us that we may borrow from your light! it will be said: Go back and seek for light! Then there will separate them a wall wherein is a gate, the inner side whereof containeth mercy, while the outer side thereof is toward the doom
The Iron 57:3 Noun
هُوَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُ وَٱلۡءَاخِرُ وَٱلظَّـٰهِرُ وَٱلۡبَاطِنُۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمٌ ۝٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing
Abdel Haleem: He is the First and the Last; the Outer and the Inner; He has knowledge of all things
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He is the First and the Last, and the Outward and the Inward; and He is Knower of all things
The Ranks, Battle Array 61:14 Noun
یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُونُوۤا۟ أَنصَارَ ٱللَّهِ كَمَا قَالَ عِیسَى ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَ لِلۡحَوَارِیِّـۧنَ مَنۡ أَنصَارِیۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۖ قَالَ ٱلۡحَوَارِیُّونَ نَحۡنُ أَنصَارُ ٱللَّهِۖ فَءَامَنَت طَّاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنۢ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ وَكَفَرَت طَّاۤىِٕفَةࣱۖ فَأَیَّدۡنَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ عَلَىٰ عَدُوِّهِمۡ فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ ظَـٰهِرِینَ ۝١٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah , as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah ?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah ." And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant
Abdel Haleem: You who believe, be God’s helpers. As Jesus, son of Mary, said to the disciples, ‘Who will come with me to help God?’ The disciples said, ‘We shall be God’s helpers.’ Some of the Children of Israel believed and some disbelieved: We supported the believers against their enemy and they were the ones who came out on top
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O ye who believe! Be Allah's helpers, even as Jesus son of Mary said unto the disciples: Who are my helpers for Allah? They said: We are Allah's helpers. And a party of the Children of Israel believed, while a party disbelieved. Then We strengthened those who believed against their foe, and they became the uppermost
Banning, Prohibition 66:4 Noun
إِن تَتُوبَاۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ صَغَتۡ قُلُوبُكُمَاۖ وَإِن تَظَـٰهَرَا عَلَیۡهِ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ مَوۡلَىٰهُ وَجِبۡرِیلُ وَصَـٰلِحُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۖ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ بَعۡدَ ذَ ٰلِكَ ظَهِیرٌ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): If you two [wives] repent to Allah , [it is best], for your hearts have deviated. But if you cooperate against him - then indeed Allah is his protector, and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers and the angels, moreover, are [his] assistants
Abdel Haleem: If both of you [wives] repent to God––for your hearts have deviated––[all will be well]; if you collaborate against him, [be warned that] God will aid him, as will Gabriel and all righteous believers, and the angels too will back him
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: If ye twain turn unto Allah repentant, (ye have cause to do so) for your hearts desired (the ban); and if ye aid one another against him (Muhammad) then lo! Allah, even He, is his Protecting Friend, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore the angels are his helpers
Cattle, Livestock 6:120 Noun
وَذَرُوا۟ ظَـٰهِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَبَاطِنَهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یَكۡسِبُونَ ٱلۡإِثۡمَ سَیُجۡزَوۡنَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَقۡتَرِفُونَ ۝١٢٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And leave what is apparent of sin and what is concealed thereof. Indeed, those who earn [blame for] sin will be recompensed for that which they used to commit
Abdel Haleem: Avoid committing sin, whether openly or in secret, for those who commit sin will be repaid for what they do
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Forsake the outwardness of sin and the inwardness thereof. Lo! those who garner sin will be awarded that which they have earned
Cattle, Livestock 6:138 Noun
وَقَالُوا۟ هَـٰذِهِۦۤ أَنۡعَـٰمࣱ وَحَرۡثٌ حِجۡرࣱ لَّا یَطۡعَمُهَاۤ إِلَّا مَن نَّشَاۤءُ بِزَعۡمِهِمۡ وَأَنۡعَـٰمٌ حُرِّمَتۡ ظُهُورُهَا وَأَنۡعَـٰمࣱ لَّا یَذۡكُرُونَ ٱسۡمَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡهَا ٱفۡتِرَاۤءً عَلَیۡهِۚ سَیَجۡزِیهِم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝١٣٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And they say, "These animals and crops are forbidden; no one may eat from them except whom we will," by their claim. And there are those [camels] whose backs are forbidden [by them] and those upon which the name of Allah is not mentioned - [all of this] an invention of untruth about Him. He will punish them for what they were inventing
Abdel Haleem: They also say, ‘These cattle and crops are reserved, and only those we allow may eat them’- so they claim! There are some animals they exempt from labour and some over which they do not pronounce God’s name [during slaughter], falsely attributing these [regulations] to Him: He will repay them for the falsehoods they invent
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And they say: Such cattle and crops are forbidden. No-one is to eat of them save whom we will - in their make-believe - cattle whose backs are forbidden, cattle over which they mention not the name of Allah. (All that is) a lie against Him. He will repay them for that which they invent
Cattle, Livestock 6:146 Noun
وَعَلَى ٱلَّذِینَ هَادُوا۟ حَرَّمۡنَا كُلَّ ذِی ظُفُرࣲۖ وَمِنَ ٱلۡبَقَرِ وَٱلۡغَنَمِ حَرَّمۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ شُحُومَهُمَاۤ إِلَّا مَا حَمَلَتۡ ظُهُورُهُمَاۤ أَوِ ٱلۡحَوَایَاۤ أَوۡ مَا ٱخۡتَلَطَ بِعَظۡمࣲۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَیۡنَـٰهُم بِبَغۡیِهِمۡۖ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ ۝١٤٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And to those who are Jews We prohibited every animal of uncloven hoof; and of the cattle and the sheep We prohibited to them their fat, except what adheres to their backs or the entrails or what is joined with bone. [By] that We repaid them for their injustice. And indeed, We are truthful
Abdel Haleem: We forbade for the Jews every animal with claws, and the fat of cattle and sheep, except what is on their backs and in their intestines, or that which sticks to their bones. This is how We penalized them for their disobedience: We are true to Our word
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Unto those who are Jews We forbade every animal with claws. And of the oxen and the sheep forbade We unto them the fat thereof save that upon the backs or the entrails, or that which is mixed with the bone. That we awarded them for their rebellion. And lo! we verily are truthful
Cattle, Livestock 6:31 Noun
قَدۡ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِلِقَاۤءِ ٱللَّهِۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَاۤءَتۡهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغۡتَةࣰ قَالُوا۟ یَـٰحَسۡرَتَنَا عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطۡنَا فِیهَا وَهُمۡ یَحۡمِلُونَ أَوۡزَارَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِمۡۚ أَلَا سَاۤءَ مَا یَزِرُونَ ۝٣١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Those will have lost who deny the meeting with Allah , until when the Hour [of resurrection] comes upon them unexpectedly, they will say, "Oh, [how great is] our regret over what we neglected concerning it," while they bear their burdens on their backs. Unquestionably, evil is that which they bear
Abdel Haleem: Lost indeed are those who deny the meeting with their Lord until, when the Hour suddenly arrives, they say, ‘Alas for us that we disregarded this!’ They will bear their burdens on their backs. How terrible those burdens will be
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They indeed are losers who deny their meeting with Allah until, when the Hour cometh on them suddenly, they cry: Alas for us, that we neglected it! They bear upon their backs their burdens. Ah, evil is that which they bear
Cattle, Livestock 6:94 Noun
وَلَقَدۡ جِئۡتُمُونَا فُرَ ٰدَىٰ كَمَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةࣲ وَتَرَكۡتُم مَّا خَوَّلۡنَـٰكُمۡ وَرَاۤءَ ظُهُورِكُمۡۖ وَمَا نَرَىٰ مَعَكُمۡ شُفَعَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ زَعَمۡتُمۡ أَنَّهُمۡ فِیكُمۡ شُرَكَـٰۤؤُا۟ۚ لَقَد تَّقَطَّعَ بَیۡنَكُمۡ وَضَلَّ عَنكُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَزۡعُمُونَ ۝٩٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [It will be said to them], "And you have certainly come to Us alone as We created you the first time, and you have left whatever We bestowed upon you behind you. And We do not see with you your 'intercessors' which you claimed that they were among you associates [of Allah ]. It has [all] been severed between you, and lost from you is what you used to claim."
Abdel Haleem: [God will say], ‘Now you return to Us, alone, as We first created you: you have left behind everything We gave you, nor do We see those intercessors of yours that you claimed were partners of God. All the bonds between you have been severed, and those about whom you made such claims have deserted you.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Now have ye come unto Us solitary as We did create you at the first, and ye have left behind you all that We bestowed upon you, and We behold not with you those your intercessors, of whom ye claimed that they possessed a share in you. Now is the bond between you severed, and that which ye presumed hath failed you
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:172 Noun
وَإِذۡ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنۢ بَنِیۤ ءَادَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمۡ ذُرِّیَّتَهُمۡ وَأَشۡهَدَهُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ أَلَسۡتُ بِرَبِّكُمۡۖ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ شَهِدۡنَاۤۚ أَن تَقُولُوا۟ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنۡ هَـٰذَا غَـٰفِلِینَ ۝١٧٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."
Abdel Haleem: [Prophet], when your Lord took out the offspring from the loins of the Children of Adam and made them bear witness about themselves, He said, ‘Am I not your Lord?’ and they replied, ‘Yes, we bear witness.’ So you cannot say on the Day of Resurrection, ‘We were not aware of this,’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And (remember) when thy Lord brought forth from the Children of Adam, from their reins, their seed, and made them testify of themselves, (saying): Am I not your Lord? They said: Yea, verily. We testify. (That was) lest ye should say at the Day of Resurrection: Lo! of this we were unaware
The Sundering, Splitting Open 84:10 Noun
وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ وَرَاءَ ظَهْرِهِ
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But as for he who is given his record behind his back
Abdel Haleem: but whoever is given his record from behind his bac
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: But whoso is given his account behind his back
Solace, Consolation, Relief, The Expansion 94:3 Noun
الَّذِي أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Which had weighed upon your bac
Abdel Haleem: that weighed so heavily on your back
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Which weighed down thy back
Repentance 9:35 Noun
یَوۡمَ یُحۡمَىٰ عَلَیۡهَا فِی نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكۡوَىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمۡ وَجُنُوبُهُمۡ وَظُهُورُهُمۡۖ هَـٰذَا مَا كَنَزۡتُمۡ لِأَنفُسِكُمۡ فَذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡنِزُونَ ۝٣٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."
Abdel Haleem: on the Day it is heated up in Hell’s Fire and used to brand their foreheads, sides, and backs, they will be told, ‘This is what you hoarded up for yourselves! Now feel the pain of what you hoarded!’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: On the day when it will (all) be heated in the fire of hell, and their foreheads and their flanks and their backs will be branded therewith (and it will be said unto them): Here is that which ye hoarded for yourselves. Now taste of what ye used to hoard

Verb (25 verses)

The Cave 18:20 Verb
إِنَّهُمۡ إِن یَظۡهَرُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمۡ یَرۡجُمُوكُمۡ أَوۡ یُعِیدُوكُمۡ فِی مِلَّتِهِمۡ وَلَن تُفۡلِحُوۤا۟ إِذًا أَبَدࣰا ۝٢٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or return you to their religion. And never would you succeed, then - ever."
Abdel Haleem: if they found you out, they would stone you or force you to return to their religion, where you would never come to any good.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: For they, if they should come to know of you, will stone you or turn you back to their religion; then ye will never prosper
The Cave 18:97 Verb
فَمَا ٱسۡطَـٰعُوۤا۟ أَن یَظۡهَرُوهُ وَمَا ٱسۡتَطَـٰعُوا۟ لَهُۥ نَقۡبࣰا ۝٩٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration
Abdel Haleem: Their enemies could not scale the barrier, nor could they pierce it
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And (Gog and Magog) were not able to surmount, nor could they pierce (it)
The Light 24:31 Verb
وَقُل لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتِ یَغۡضُضۡنَ مِنۡ أَبۡصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَیَحۡفَظۡنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا یُبۡدِینَ زِینَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَاۖ وَلۡیَضۡرِبۡنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُیُوبِهِنَّۖ وَلَا یُبۡدِینَ زِینَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوۡ ءَابَاۤىِٕهِنَّ أَوۡ ءَابَاۤءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوۡ أَبۡنَاۤىِٕهِنَّ أَوۡ أَبۡنَاۤءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوۡ إِخۡوَ ٰنِهِنَّ أَوۡ بَنِیۤ إِخۡوَ ٰنِهِنَّ أَوۡ بَنِیۤ أَخَوَ ٰتِهِنَّ أَوۡ نِسَاۤىِٕهِنَّ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُهُنَّ أَوِ ٱلتَّـٰبِعِینَ غَیۡرِ أُو۟لِی ٱلۡإِرۡبَةِ مِنَ ٱلرِّجَالِ أَوِ ٱلطِّفۡلِ ٱلَّذِینَ لَمۡ یَظۡهَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰ عَوۡرَ ٰتِ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِۖ وَلَا یَضۡرِبۡنَ بِأَرۡجُلِهِنَّ لِیُعۡلَمَ مَا یُخۡفِینَ مِن زِینَتِهِنَّۚ وَتُوبُوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ جَمِیعًا أَیُّهَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٣١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed
Abdel Haleem: And tell believing women that they should lower their glances, guard their private parts, and not display their charms beyond what [it is acceptable] to reveal; they should let their headscarves fall to cover their necklines and not reveal their charms except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their womenfolk, their slaves, such men as attend them who have no sexual desire, or children who are not yet aware of women’s nakedness; they should not stamp their feet so as to draw attention to any hidden charms. Believers, all of you, turn to God so that you may prosper
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands' fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women's nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto Allah together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:48 Verb
فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِنۡ عِندِنَا قَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَاۤ أُوتِیَ مِثۡلَ مَاۤ أُوتِیَ مُوسَىٰۤۚ أَوَ لَمۡ یَكۡفُرُوا۟ بِمَاۤ أُوتِیَ مُوسَىٰ مِن قَبۡلُۖ قَالُوا۟ سِحۡرَانِ تَظَـٰهَرَا وَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا بِكُلࣲّ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٤٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But when the truth came to them from Us, they said, "Why was he not given like that which was given to Moses?" Did they not disbelieve in that which was given to Moses before? They said, "[They are but] two works of magic supporting each other, and indeed we are, in both, disbelievers."
Abdel Haleem: Even now that Our truth has come to them, they say, ‘Why has he not been given signs like those given to Moses?’ Did they not also deny the truth that was given to Moses before? They say, ‘Two kinds of sor-cery, helping each other,’ and, ‘We refuse to accept either of them.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: But when there came unto them the Truth from Our presence, they said: Why is he not given the like of what was given unto Moses? Did they not disbelieve in that which was given unto Moses of old? They say: Two magics that support each other; and they say: Lo! in both we are disbelievers
The Cow 2:85 Verb
ثُمَّ أَنتُمۡ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ تَقۡتُلُونَ أَنفُسَكُمۡ وَتُخۡرِجُونَ فَرِیقࣰا مِّنكُم مِّن دِیَـٰرِهِمۡ تَظَـٰهَرُونَ عَلَیۡهِم بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَ ٰنِ وَإِن یَأۡتُوكُمۡ أُسَـٰرَىٰ تُفَـٰدُوهُمۡ وَهُوَ مُحَرَّمٌ عَلَیۡكُمۡ إِخۡرَاجُهُمۡۚ أَفَتُؤۡمِنُونَ بِبَعۡضِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَتَكۡفُرُونَ بِبَعۡضࣲۚ فَمَا جَزَاۤءُ مَن یَفۡعَلُ ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنكُمۡ إِلَّا خِزۡیࣱ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَیَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰۤ أَشَدِّ ٱلۡعَذَابِۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٨٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Then, you are those [same ones who are] killing one another and evicting a party of your people from their homes, cooperating against them in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do
Abdel Haleem: Yet here you are, killing one another and driving some of your own people from their homes, helping one another in sin and aggression against them. If they come to you as captives, you still pay to set them free, although you had no right to drive them out. So do you believe in some parts of the Scripture and not in others? The punishment for those of you who do this will be nothing but disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be condemned to the harshest torment: God is not unaware of what you do
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Yet ye it is who slay each other and drive out a party of your people from their homes, supporting one another against them by sin and transgression? - and if they came to you as captives ye would ransom them, whereas their expulsion was itself unlawful for you - Believe ye in part of the Scripture and disbelieve ye in part thereof? And what is the reward of those who do so save ignominy in the life of the world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be consigned to the most grievous doom. For Allah is not unaware of what ye do
The Romans, The Byzantines 30:18 Verb
وَلَهُ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَعَشِیࣰّا وَحِینَ تُظۡهِرُونَ ۝١٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And to Him is [due all] praise throughout the heavens and the earth. And [exalted is He] at night and when you are at noon
Abdel Haleem: praise is due to Him in the heavens and the earth- in the late afternoon, and at midday
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Unto Him be praise in the heavens and the earth! - and at the sun's decline and in the noonday
The Romans, The Byzantines 30:41 Verb
ظَهَرَ ٱلۡفَسَادُ فِی ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ أَیۡدِی ٱلنَّاسِ لِیُذِیقَهُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی عَمِلُوا۟ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٤١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness]
Abdel Haleem: Corruption has flourished on land and sea as a result of people’s actions and He will make them taste the consequences of some of their own actions so that they may turn back
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Corruption doth appear on land and sea because of (the evil) which men's hands have done, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return
The Clans, The Coalition, The Combined Forces, The Allies 33:26 Verb
وَأَنزَلَ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَـٰهَرُوهُم مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مِن صَیَاصِیهِمۡ وَقَذَفَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلرُّعۡبَ فَرِیقࣰا تَقۡتُلُونَ وَتَأۡسِرُونَ فَرِیقࣰا ۝٢٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Scripture from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts [so that] a party you killed, and you took captive a party
Abdel Haleem: He brought those People of the Book who supported them down from their strongholds and put panic into their hearts. Some of them you [believers] killed and some you took captive
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And He brought those of the People of the Scripture who supported them down from their strongholds, and cast panic into their hearts. Some ye slew, and ye made captive some
The Clans, The Coalition, The Combined Forces, The Allies 33:4 Verb
مَّا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِرَجُلࣲ مِّن قَلۡبَیۡنِ فِی جَوۡفِهِۦۚ وَمَا جَعَلَ أَزۡوَ ٰجَكُمُ ٱلَّـٰۤءِی تُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِنۡهُنَّ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡۚ وَمَا جَعَلَ أَدۡعِیَاۤءَكُمۡ أَبۡنَاۤءَكُمۡۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ قَوۡلُكُم بِأَفۡوَ ٰهِكُمۡۖ وَٱللَّهُ یَقُولُ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَهُوَ یَهۡدِی ٱلسَّبِیلَ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Allah has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful your mothers. And he has not made your adopted sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allah says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way
Abdel Haleem: God does not put two hearts within a man’s breast. He does not turn the wives you reject and liken to your mothers’ backs into your real mothers; nor does He make your adopted sons into real sons. These are only words from your mouths, while God speaks the truth and guides people to the right path
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Allah hath not assigned unto any man two hearts within his body, nor hath He made your wives whom ye declare (to be your mothers) your mothers, nor hath He made those whom ye claim (to be your sons) your sons. This is but a saying of your mouths. But Allah saith the truth and He showeth the way
The Forgiver, The Forgiving One 40:26 Verb
وَقَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ذَرُونِیۤ أَقۡتُلۡ مُوسَىٰ وَلۡیَدۡعُ رَبَّهُۥۤۖ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُبَدِّلَ دِینَكُمۡ أَوۡ أَن یُظۡهِرَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ٱلۡفَسَادَ ۝٢٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And Pharaoh said, "Let me kill Moses and let him call upon his Lord. Indeed, I fear that he will change your religion or that he will cause corruption in the land."
Abdel Haleem: and Pharaoh said, ‘Leave me to kill Moses- let him call upon his Lord!- for I fear he may cause you to change your religion, or spread disorder in the land.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And Pharaoh said: Suffer me to kill Moses, and let him cry unto his Lord. Lo! I fear that he will alter your religion or that he will cause confusion in the land
Ornaments of Gold, Luxury, The Embellishment 43:33 Verb
وَلَوۡلَاۤ أَن یَكُونَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰ لَّجَعَلۡنَا لِمَن یَكۡفُرُ بِٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ لِبُیُوتِهِمۡ سُقُفࣰا مِّن فِضَّةࣲ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَیۡهَا یَظۡهَرُونَ ۝٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful - for their houses - ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to moun
Abdel Haleem: If it were not that all mankind might have become a single nation [of disbelievers], We could have given all those who disbelieve in the Lord of Mercy houses with roofs of silver, sweeping staircases to ascend
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And were it not that mankind would have become one community, We might well have appointed, for those who disbelieve in the Beneficent, roofs of silver for their houses and stairs (of silver) whereby to mount
Victory, Conquest 48:28 Verb
هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَرۡسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَدِینِ ٱلۡحَقِّ لِیُظۡهِرَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلدِّینِ كُلِّهِۦۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ شَهِیدࣰا ۝٢٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allah as Witness
Abdel Haleem: It was He who sent His Messenger, with guidance and the religion of Truth, for him to show that it is above all [false] religion. God suffices as a witness
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He it is Who hath sent His messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religion. And Allah sufficeth as a Witness
She That Disputeth, The Pleading Woman, She Who Pleaded 58:2 Verb
ٱلَّذِینَ یُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِنكُم مِّن نِّسَاۤىِٕهِم مَّا هُنَّ أُمَّهَـٰتِهِمۡۖ إِنۡ أُمَّهَـٰتُهُمۡ إِلَّا ٱلَّـٰۤءِی وَلَدۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ مُنكَرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ وَزُورࣰاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورࣱ ۝٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Those who pronounce thihar among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving
Abdel Haleem: Even if any of you say to their wives, ‘You are to me like my mother’s back,’they are not their mothers; their only mothers are those who gave birth to them. What they say is certainly blameworthy and false, but God is pardoning and forgiving
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Such of you as put away your wives (by saying they are as their mothers) - They are not their mothers; none are their mothers except those who gave them birth - they indeed utter an ill word and a lie. And lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
She That Disputeth, The Pleading Woman, She Who Pleaded 58:3 Verb
وَٱلَّذِینَ یُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَاۤىِٕهِمۡ ثُمَّ یَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا۟ فَتَحۡرِیرُ رَقَبَةࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَتَمَاۤسَّاۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And those who pronounce thihar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do
Abdel Haleem: Those of you who say such a thing to their wives, then go back on what they have said, must free a slave before the couple may touch one another again––this is what you are commanded to do, and God is fully aware of what you do––
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Those who put away their wives (by saying they are as their mothers) and afterward would go back on that which they have said, (the penalty) in that case (is) the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. Unto this ye are exhorted; and Allah is Informed of what ye do
She That is to be Examined, Examining her, She Who is Tested 60:9 Verb
إِنَّمَا یَنۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِینَ قَـٰتَلُوكُمۡ فِی ٱلدِّینِ وَأَخۡرَجُوكُم مِّن دِیَـٰرِكُمۡ وَظَـٰهَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ إِخۡرَاجِكُمۡ أَن تَوَلَّوۡهُمۡۚ وَمَن یَتَوَلَّهُمۡ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers
Abdel Haleem: But God forbids you to take as allies those who have fought against you for your faith, driven you out of your homes, and helped others to drive you out: any of you who take them as allies will truly be wrongdoers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Allah forbiddeth you only those who warred against you on account of religion and have driven you out from your homes and helped to drive you out, that ye make friends of them. Whosoever maketh friends of them - (All) such are wrong-doers
The Ranks, Battle Array 61:9 Verb
هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَرۡسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَدِینِ ٱلۡحَقِّ لِیُظۡهِرَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلدِّینِ كُلِّهِۦ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allah dislike it
Abdel Haleem: it is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to show that it is above all [other] religions, even though the idolaters hate it
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: He it is Who hath sent His messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it conqueror of all religion however much idolaters may be averse
Banning, Prohibition 66:3 Verb
وَإِذۡ أَسَرَّ ٱلنَّبِیُّ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضِ أَزۡوَ ٰجِهِۦ حَدِیثࣰا فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتۡ بِهِۦ وَأَظۡهَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِ عَرَّفَ بَعۡضَهُۥ وَأَعۡرَضَ عَنۢ بَعۡضࣲۖ فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِۦ قَالَتۡ مَنۡ أَنۢبَأَكَ هَـٰذَاۖ قَالَ نَبَّأَنِیَ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ٱلۡخَبِیرُ ۝٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And [remember] when the Prophet confided to one of his wives a statement; and when she informed [another] of it and Allah showed it to him, he made known part of it and ignored a part. And when he informed her about it, she said, "Who told you this?" He said, "I was informed by the Knowing, the Acquainted."
Abdel Haleem: The Prophet told something in confidence to one of his wives. When she disclosed it [to another wife] and God made this known to him, he confirmed part of it, keeping the rest to himself. When he confronted her with what she had done, she asked, ‘Who told you about this?’ and he replied, ‘The All Knowing, the All Aware told me.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: When the Prophet confided a fact unto one of his wives and when she afterward divulged it and Allah apprised him thereof, he made known (to her) part thereof and passed over part. And when he told it her she said: Who hath told thee? He said: The Knower, the Aware hath told me
Banning, Prohibition 66:4 Verb
إِن تَتُوبَاۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ صَغَتۡ قُلُوبُكُمَاۖ وَإِن تَظَـٰهَرَا عَلَیۡهِ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ مَوۡلَىٰهُ وَجِبۡرِیلُ وَصَـٰلِحُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۖ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ بَعۡدَ ذَ ٰلِكَ ظَهِیرٌ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): If you two [wives] repent to Allah , [it is best], for your hearts have deviated. But if you cooperate against him - then indeed Allah is his protector, and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers and the angels, moreover, are [his] assistants
Abdel Haleem: If both of you [wives] repent to God––for your hearts have deviated––[all will be well]; if you collaborate against him, [be warned that] God will aid him, as will Gabriel and all righteous believers, and the angels too will back him
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: If ye twain turn unto Allah repentant, (ye have cause to do so) for your hearts desired (the ban); and if ye aid one another against him (Muhammad) then lo! Allah, even He, is his Protecting Friend, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore the angels are his helpers
Cattle, Livestock 6:151 Verb
۞ قُلۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ أَتۡلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡۖ أَلَّا تُشۡرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَبِٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَیۡنِ إِحۡسَـٰنࣰاۖ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوۤا۟ أَوۡلَـٰدَكُم مِّنۡ إِمۡلَـٰقࣲ نَّحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُكُمۡ وَإِیَّاهُمۡۖ وَلَا تَقۡرَبُوا۟ ٱلۡفَوَ ٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَۖ وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوا۟ ٱلنَّفۡسَ ٱلَّتِی حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ وَصَّىٰكُم بِهِۦ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٥١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason."
Abdel Haleem: Say, ‘Come! I will tell you what your Lord has really forbidden you. Do not ascribe anything as a partner to Him; be good to your parents; do not kill your children in fear of poverty’- We will provide for you and for them- ‘ stay well away from committing obscenities, whether openly or in secret; do not take the life God has made sacred, except by right. This is what He commands you to do: perhaps you will use your reason
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say: Come, I will recite unto you that which your Lord hath made a sacred duty for you: That ye ascribe no thing as partner unto Him and that ye do good to parents, and that ye slay not your children because of penury - We provide for you and for them - and that ye draw not nigh to lewd things whether open or concealed. And that ye slay not the life which Allah hath made sacred, save in the course of justice. This He hath command you, in order that ye may discern
The Jinn 72:26 Verb
عَـٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ فَلَا یُظۡهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَیۡبِهِۦۤ أَحَدًا ۝٢٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyon
Abdel Haleem: He is the One who knows what is hidden
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: (He is) the Knower of the Unseen, and He revealeth unto none His secret
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:33 Verb
قُلۡ إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ رَبِّیَ ٱلۡفَوَ ٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَٱلۡإِثۡمَ وَٱلۡبَغۡیَ بِغَیۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَن تُشۡرِكُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ مَا لَمۡ یُنَزِّلۡ بِهِۦ سُلۡطَـٰنࣰا وَأَن تَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, "My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know."
Abdel Haleem: Say [Prophet], ‘My Lord only forbids disgraceful deeds- whether they be open or hidden- and sin and unjustified aggression, and that you, without His sanction, associate things with Him, and that you say things about Him without knowledge.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say: My Lord forbiddeth only indecencies, such of them as are apparent and such as are within, and sin and wrongful oppression, and that ye associate with Allah that for which no warrant hath been revealed, and that ye tell concerning Allah that which ye know not
Repentance 9:33 Verb
هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَرۡسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَدِینِ ٱلۡحَقِّ لِیُظۡهِرَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلدِّینِ كُلِّهِۦ وَلَوۡ كَرِهَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allah dislike it

Repentance 9:4 Verb
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ یَنقُصُوكُمۡ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَمۡ یُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أَحَدࣰا فَأَتِمُّوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِمۡ عَهۡدَهُمۡ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him]
Abdel Haleem: As for those who have honoured the treaty you made with them and who have not supported anyone against you: fulfil your agreement with them to the end of their term. God loves those who are mindful of Him
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him)
Repentance 9:48 Verb
لَقَدِ ٱبۡتَغَوُا۟ ٱلۡفِتۡنَةَ مِن قَبۡلُ وَقَلَّبُوا۟ لَكَ ٱلۡأُمُورَ حَتَّىٰ جَاۤءَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَظَهَرَ أَمۡرُ ٱللَّهِ وَهُمۡ كَـٰرِهُونَ ۝٤٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They had already desired dissension before and had upset matters for you until the truth came and the ordinance of Allah appeared, while they were averse
Abdel Haleem: Indeed, they had tried before that to stir up discord: they devised plots against you [Prophet] until the truth was exposed and God’s will triumphed, much to their disgust
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Aforetime they sought to cause sedition and raised difficulties for thee till the Truth came and the decree of Allah was made manifest, though they were loth
Repentance 9:8 Verb
كَیۡفَ وَإِن یَظۡهَرُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمۡ لَا یَرۡقُبُوا۟ فِیكُمۡ إِلࣰّا وَلَا ذِمَّةࣰۚ یُرۡضُونَكُم بِأَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡ وَتَأۡبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَـٰسِقُونَ ۝٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient
Abdel Haleem: [How,] when, if they were to get the upper hand over you, they would not respect any tie with you, of kinship or of treaty? They please you with their tongues, but their hearts are against you and most of them are lawbreakers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: How (can there be any treaty for the others) when, if they have the upper hand of you, they regard not pact nor honour in respect of you? They satisfy you with their mouths the while their hearts refuse. And most of them are wrongdoers
