1 Unity will prevail

وَٱلصَّـٰۤفَّـٰتِ صَفࣰّا ۝١

By the angels, who rank themselves in order

wal-ṣāfāti ṣaffa

فَٱلزَّ ٰجِرَ ٰتِ زَجۡرࣰا ۝٢

and by those who drive forward and dispel the clouds

fal-zājirāti zajra

فَٱلتَّـٰلِیَـٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۝٣

and by those who read the Koran for an admonition

fal-tāliyāti dhik'ra

إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمۡ لَوَ ٰحِدࣱ ۝٤

verily your God is one

inna ilāhakum lawāḥidu

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَـٰرِقِ ۝٥

The Lord of heaven and earth, and of whatever is between them, and the Lord of the east

rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā warabbu l-mashāriq

إِنَّا زَیَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا بِزِینَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ ۝٦

We have adorned the lower heaven with the ornament of the stars

innā zayyannā l-samāa l-dun'yā bizīnatin l-kawākib

وَحِفۡظࣰا مِّن كُلِّ شَیۡطَـٰنࣲ مَّارِدࣲ ۝٧

And We have placed therein a guard, against every rebellious devil

waḥif'ẓan min kulli shayṭānin māridi

لَّا یَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَیُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبࣲ ۝٨

that they may not listen to the discourse of the exalted princes, -- for they are darted at from every side

lā yassammaʿūna ilā l-mala-i l-aʿlā wayuq'dhafūna min kulli jānibi

دُحُورࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ وَاصِبٌ ۝٩

to repel them, and a lasting torment is prepared for them; -

duḥūran walahum ʿadhābun wāṣibu

إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ ثَاقِبࣱ ۝١٠

except him who catcheth a word by stealth, and is pursued by a shining flame

illā man khaṭifa l-khaṭfata fa-atbaʿahu shihābun thāqibu

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاۤۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّن طِینࣲ لَّازِبِۭ ۝١١

Ask the Meccans therefore, whether they be stronger by nature, or the angels whom We have created? We have surely created them of stiff clay

fa-is'taftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqnā innā khalaqnāhum min ṭīnin lāzibi

بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَیَسۡخَرُونَ ۝١٢

Thou wondrest at God's power and their obstinacy; but they mock at the arguments urged to convince them

bal ʿajib'ta wayaskharūn

وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا یَذۡكُرُونَ ۝١٣

When they are warned, they do not take warning

wa-idhā dhukkirū lā yadhkurūn

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡا۟ ءَایَةࣰ یَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ ۝١٤

and when they see any sign, they scoff thereat

wa-idhā ra-aw āyatan yastaskhirūn

وَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٥

and say, this is no other than manifest sorcery

waqālū in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnu

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝١٦

After we shall be dead, and become dust and bones, shall we really be raised to life

a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn

أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝١٧

and our fore-fathers also

awaābāunā l-awalūn

قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَ ٰخِرُونَ ۝١٨

Answer, yea: And ye shall then be despicable

qul naʿam wa-antum dākhirūn

فَإِنَّمَا هِیَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَ ٰحِدَةࣱ فَإِذَا هُمۡ یَنظُرُونَ ۝١٩

There shall be but one blast of the trumpet, and they shall see themselves raised

fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidatun fa-idhā hum yanẓurūn

وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰوَیۡلَنَا هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٢٠

And they shall say, alas for us! This is the day of judgment

waqālū yāwaylanā hādhā yawmu l-dīn

هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِی كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٢١

this is the day of distinction between the righteous and the wicked, which ye rejected as a falsehood

hādhā yawmu l-faṣli alladhī kuntum bihi tukadhibūn

2 The Judgment

۞ ٱحۡشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٢

Gather together those who have acted unjustly, and their comrades, and the idols which they worshippe

uḥ'shurū alladhīna ẓalamū wa-azwājahum wamā kānū yaʿbudūn

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٢٣

besides God, and direct them in the way to hell

min dūni l-lahi fa-ih'dūhum ilā ṣirāṭi l-jaḥīm

وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡءُولُونَ ۝٢٤

And set them before God's tribunal; for they shall be called to account

waqifūhum innahum masūlūn

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ ۝٢٥

What aileth you that ye defend not one another

mā lakum lā tanāṣarūn

بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ ۝٢٦

But on this day they shall submit themselves to the judgment of God

bal humu l-yawma mus'taslimūn

وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٢٧

And they shall draw nigh unto one another, and shall dispute among themselves

wa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٨

And the seduced shall say unto those who seduced them, verily ye came unto us with presages of prosperity

qālū innakum kuntum tatūnanā ʿani l-yamīn

قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢٩

and the seducers shall answer, nay, rather ye were not true believers

qālū bal lam takūnū mu'minīn

وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَیۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا طَـٰغِینَ ۝٣٠

For we had no power over you to compel you; but ye were people who voluntarily transgressed

wamā kāna lanā ʿalaykum min sul'ṭānin bal kuntum qawman ṭāghīn

فَحَقَّ عَلَیۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَاۤۖ إِنَّا لَذَاۤىِٕقُونَ ۝٣١

Wherefore the sentence of our Lord hath been justly pronounced against us, and we shall surely taste his vengeance

faḥaqqa ʿalaynā qawlu rabbinā innā ladhāiqūn

فَأَغۡوَیۡنَـٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِینَ ۝٣٢

We seduced you; but we also erred ourselves

fa-aghwaynākum innā kunnā ghāwīn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٣

They shall both thereof be made partakers of the same punishment on that day

fa-innahum yawma-idhin fī l-ʿadhābi mush'tarikūn

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣٤

Thus will We deal with the wicked

innā kadhālika nafʿalu bil-muj'rimīn

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۤا۟ إِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٣٥

Because when it is said unto them, there is no god besides the true God, they swell with arrogance

innahum kānū idhā qīla lahum lā ilāha illā l-lahu yastakbirūn

وَیَقُولُونَ أَىِٕنَّا لَتَارِكُوۤا۟ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرࣲ مَّجۡنُونِۭ ۝٣٦

and say, shall we abandon our gods for a distracted poet

wayaqūlūna a-innā latārikū ālihatinā lishāʿirin majnūni

بَلۡ جَاۤءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٣٧

Nay; he cometh with the truth, and beareth witness to the former apostles

bal jāa bil-ḥaqi waṣaddaqa l-mur'salīn

إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَاۤىِٕقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِیمِ ۝٣٨

Ye shall surely taste the painful torment of hell

innakum ladhāiqū l-ʿadhābi l-alīm

وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٩

and ye shall not be rewarded, but according to your works

wamā tuj'zawna illā mā kuntum taʿmalūn

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٤٠

But as for the sincere servants of God

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤١

they shall have a certain provision in paradise

ulāika lahum riz'qun maʿlūmu

فَوَ ٰكِهُ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٤٢

namely, delicious fruits: And they shall be honoured

fawākihu wahum muk'ramūn

فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٤٣

They shall be placed in gardens of pleasure

fī jannāti l-naʿīm

عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝٤٤

leaning on couches, opposite to one another

yuṭāfu ʿalayhim bikasin min maʿīni

یُطَافُ عَلَیۡهِم بِكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینِۭ ۝٤٥

A cup shall be carried round unto them, filled from a limpid fountain

Yutafu AAalayhim bika/sin min maAAeenin

بَیۡضَاۤءَ لَذَّةࣲ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِینَ ۝٤٦

for the delight of those who drink

bayḍāa ladhatin lilshāribīn

لَا فِیهَا غَوۡلࣱ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا یُنزَفُونَ ۝٤٧

It shall not oppress the understanding, neither shall they be inebriated therewith

lā fīhā ghawlun walā hum ʿanhā yunzafūn

وَعِندَهُمۡ قَـٰصِرَ ٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِینࣱ ۝٤٨

And near them shall lie the virgins of paradise, refraining their looks from beholding any besides their spouses, having large black eyes

waʿindahum qāṣirātu l-ṭarfi ʿīnu

كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَیۡضࣱ مَّكۡنُونࣱ ۝٤٩

and resembling the eggs of an ostrich covered with feathers from the dust

ka-annahunna bayḍun maknūnu

فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٥٠

And they shall turn the one unto the other, and shall ask one another questions

fa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn

قَالَ قَاۤىِٕلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّی كَانَ لِی قَرِینࣱ ۝٥١

And one of them shall say, verily I had an intimate friend while I lived in the world

qāla qāilun min'hum innī kāna lī qarīnu

یَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِینَ ۝٥٢

who said unto me, art thou one of those who assertest the truth of the resurrection

yaqūlu a-innaka lamina l-muṣadiqīn

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِینُونَ ۝٥٣

After we shall be dead, and reduced to dust and bones, shall we surely be judged

a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamadīnūn

قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ ۝٥٤

Then he shall say to his companions, will ye look down

qāla hal antum muṭṭaliʿūn

فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِی سَوَاۤءِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٥٥

And he shall look down, and shall see him in the midst of hell

fa-iṭṭalaʿa faraāhu fī sawāi l-jaḥīm

قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِینِ ۝٥٦

And he shall say unto him, by God, it wanted little but thou hadst drawn me into ruin

qāla tal-lahi in kidtta latur'dīn

وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّی لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِینَ ۝٥٧

and had it not been for the grace of my Lord, I had surely been one of those who have been delivered up to eternal torment

walawlā niʿ'matu rabbī lakuntu mina l-muḥ'ḍarīn

أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَیِّتِینَ ۝٥٨

Shall we die any othe

afamā naḥnu bimayyitīn

إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٥٩

than our first death; or do we suffer any punishment

illā mawtatanā l-ūlā wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٦٠

Verily this is great felicity

inna hādhā lahuwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

لِمِثۡلِ هَـٰذَا فَلۡیَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلُونَ ۝٦١

For the obtaining a felicity like this let the labourers labour

limith'li hādhā falyaʿmali l-ʿāmilūn

أَذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ۝٦٢

Is this a better entertainment, or the tree of Al Zakkum

adhālika khayrun nuzulan am shajaratu l-zaqūm

إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٦٣

Verily We have designed the same for an occasion of dispute unto the unjust

innā jaʿalnāhā fit'natan lilẓẓālimīn

إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةࣱ تَخۡرُجُ فِیۤ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٤

It is a tree which issueth from the bottom of hell

innahā shajaratun takhruju fī aṣli l-jaḥīm

طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینِ ۝٦٥

The fruit thereof resembleth the heads of devils

ṭalʿuhā ka-annahu ruūsu l-shayāṭīn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٦٦

and the damned shall eat of the same, and shall fill their bellies therewith

fa-innahum laākilūna min'hā famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn

ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَیۡهَا لَشَوۡبࣰا مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٦٧

and there shall be given them thereon a mixture of filthy and boiling water to drink

thumma inna lahum ʿalayhā lashawban min ḥamīmi

ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٨

Afterwards shall they return into hell

thumma inna marjiʿahum la-ilā l-jaḥīm

إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡا۟ ءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ ضَاۤلِّینَ ۝٦٩

They found their fathers going astray

innahum alfaw ābāahum ḍāllīn

فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمۡ یُهۡرَعُونَ ۝٧٠

and they trod hastily in their footsteps

fahum ʿalā āthārihim yuh'raʿūn

وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٧١

For the greater part of the ancients erred before them

walaqad ḍalla qablahum aktharu l-awalīn

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِیهِم مُّنذِرِینَ ۝٧٢

And We sent warners unto them heretofore

walaqad arsalnā fīhim mundhirīn

فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝٧٣

And see how miserable was the end of those who were warned

fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mundharīn

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٧٤

except the sincere servants of God

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

3 Noah and Abraham

وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحࣱ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِیبُونَ ۝٧٥

Noah called on Us in former days, and We heard him graciously

walaqad nādānā nūḥun falaniʿ'ma l-mujībūn

وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٦

And We delivered him and his family out of the great distress

wanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm

وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّیَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝٧٧

and We caused his off-spring to be those who survived to people the earth

wajaʿalnā dhurriyyatahu humu l-bāqīn

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٧٨

And We left the following salutation to be bestowed on him by the latest posterity

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٩

namely, peace be on Noah among all creatures

salāmun ʿalā nūḥin fī l-ʿālamīn

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٨٠

Thus do We reward the righteous

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨١

for he was one of our servants the true believers

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٨٢

Afterwards We drowned the others

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِیعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٨٣

Abraham also was of his religion

wa-inna min shīʿatihi la-ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ جَاۤءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمٍ ۝٨٤

When he came unto his Lord with a perfect heart

idh jāa rabbahu biqalbin salīmi

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٨٥

When he said unto his father and his people, what do ye worship

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mādhā taʿbudūn

أَىِٕفۡكًا ءَالِهَةࣰ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِیدُونَ ۝٨٦

Do ye choose false gods preferably to the true God

a-if'kan ālihatan dūna l-lahi turīdūn

فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٧

What therefore is your opinion of the Lord of all creatures

famā ẓannukum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةࣰ فِی ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٨٨

And he looked and observed the stars

fanaẓara naẓratan fī l-nujūm

فَقَالَ إِنِّی سَقِیمࣱ ۝٨٩

and said, verily I shall be sick, and shall not assist at your sacrifices

faqāla innī saqīmu

فَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِینَ ۝٩٠

And they turned their backs and departed from him

fatawallaw ʿanhu mud'birīn

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰۤ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٩١

And Abraham went privately to their gods, and said scoffingly unto them, do ye not eat of the meat which is set before you

farāgha ilā ālihatihim faqāla alā takulūn

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ ۝٩٢

What aileth you that ye speak not

mā lakum lā tanṭiqūn

فَرَاغَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٣

And he turned upon them, and struck them with his right hand, and demolished them

farāgha ʿalayhim ḍarban bil-yamīn

فَأَقۡبَلُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ یَزِفُّونَ ۝٩٤

And the people came hastily unto him

fa-aqbalū ilayhi yaziffūn

قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ ۝٩٥

And he said, do ye worship the images which ye carve

qāla ataʿbudūna mā tanḥitūn

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٦

Whereas God hath created you, and also that which ye make

wal-lahu khalaqakum wamā taʿmalūn

قَالُوا۟ ٱبۡنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنۡیَـٰنࣰا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِی ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٩٧

They said, build a pile for him, and cast him into the glowing fire

qālū ib'nū lahu bun'yānan fa-alqūhu fī l-jaḥīm

فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَیۡدࣰا فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِینَ ۝٩٨

And they devised a plot against him; but We made them the inferior, and delivered him

fa-arādū bihi kaydan fajaʿalnāhumu l-asfalīn

وَقَالَ إِنِّی ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٩٩

And Abraham said, verily I am going unto my Lord, who will direct me

waqāla innī dhāhibun ilā rabbī sayahdīn

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٠٠

O Lord, grant me a righteous issue

rabbi hab lī mina l-ṣāliḥīn

فَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ حَلِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

Wherefore We acquainted him that he should have a son, who should be a meek youth

fabasharnāhu bighulāmin ḥalīmi

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعۡیَ قَالَ یَـٰبُنَیَّ إِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰ فِی ٱلۡمَنَامِ أَنِّیۤ أَذۡبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرَىٰۚ قَالَ یَـٰۤأَبَتِ ٱفۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُۖ سَتَجِدُنِیۤ إِن شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٠٢

And when he had attained to years of discretion, and could join in acts of religion with him; Abraham said unto him, O my son, verily I saw in a dream that I should offer thee in sacrifice: Consider therefore what thou art of opinion I should do. He answered, O my father, do what thou art commanded: Thou shalt find me, if God please, a patient person

falammā balagha maʿahu l-saʿya qāla yābunayya innī arā fī l-manāmi annī adhbaḥuka fa-unẓur mādhā tarā qāla yāabati if'ʿal mā tu'maru satajidunī in shāa l-lahu mina l-ṣābirīn

فَلَمَّاۤ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِینِ ۝١٠٣

And when they had submitted themselves to the divine will, and Abraham had laid his son prostrate on his face

falammā aslamā watallahu lil'jabīn

وَنَـٰدَیۡنَـٰهُ أَن یَـٰۤإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ ۝١٠٤

We cried unto him, O Abraham

wanādaynāhu an yāib'rāhīm

قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡیَاۤۚ إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٠٥

now hast thou verified the vision. Thus do We reward the righteous

qad ṣaddaqta l-ru'yā innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰۤؤُا۟ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٠٦

Verily this was a manifest trial

inna hādhā lahuwa l-balāu l-mubīn

وَفَدَیۡنَـٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٠٧

And We ransomed him with a noble victim

wafadaynāhu bidhib'ḥin ʿaẓīmi

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٠٨

And We left the following salutation to be bestowed on him by the latest posterity

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝١٠٩

namely, peace be on Abraham

salāmun ʿalā ib'rāhīm

كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١١٠

Thus do We reward the righteous

kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١١

For he was one of our faithful servants

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

وَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِإِسۡحَـٰقَ نَبِیࣰّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١١٢

And We rejoiced him with the promise of Isaac, a righteous prophet

wabasharnāhu bi-is'ḥāqa nabiyyan mina l-ṣāliḥīn

وَبَـٰرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ وَعَلَىٰۤ إِسۡحَـٰقَۚ وَمِن ذُرِّیَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنࣱ وَظَالِمࣱ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ مُبِینࣱ ۝١١٣

and We blessed him and Isaac: And of their off-spring were some righteous doers, and others who manifestly injured their own souls

wabāraknā ʿalayhi waʿalā is'ḥāqa wamin dhurriyyatihimā muḥ'sinun waẓālimun linafsihi mubīnu

4 Moses, Aaron, Elias and Lot

وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١١٤

We were also gracious unto Moses and Aaron, heretofore

walaqad manannā ʿalā mūsā wahārūn

وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝١١٥

And We delivered them and their people from a great distress

wanajjaynāhumā waqawmahumā mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm

وَنَصَرۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝١١٦

And We assisted them against the Egyptians, and they became the conquerors

wanaṣarnāhum fakānū humu l-ghālibīn

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِینَ ۝١١٧

And We gave them the perspicuous book of the law

waātaynāhumā l-kitāba l-mus'tabīn

وَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَ ٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمَ ۝١١٨

and We directed them into the right way

wahadaynāhumā l-ṣirāṭa l-mus'taqīm

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمَا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١١٩

And We left the following salutation to be bestowed on them by the latest posterity

wataraknā ʿalayhimā fī l-ākhirīn

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١٢٠

namely, peace be on Moses and Aaron

salāmun ʿalā mūsā wahārūn

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٢١

Thus do We reward the righteous

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢٢

for they were two of our faithful servants

innahumā min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ إِلۡیَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

And Elias was also one of those who were sent by Us

wa-inna il'yāsa lamina l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦۤ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

When he said unto his people, do ye not fear God

idh qāla liqawmihi alā tattaqūn

أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلࣰا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقِینَ ۝١٢٥

Do ye invoke Baal, and forsake the most excellent creator

atadʿūna baʿlan watadharūna aḥsana l-khāliqīn

ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٢٦

God is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers

al-laha rabbakum warabba ābāikumu l-awalīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٢٧

But they accused him of imposture: Wherefore they shall be delivered up to eternal punishment

fakadhabūhu fa-innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٢٨

except the sincere servants of God

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٢٩

And We left the following salutation to be bestowed on him by the latest posterity

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِلۡ یَاسِینَ ۝١٣٠

namely, peace be on Ilyasin

salāmun ʿalā il yāsīn

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٣١

Thus do We reward the righteous

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٢

For he was one of our faithful servants

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ لُوطࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٣

And Lot was also one of those who were sent by Us

wa-inna lūṭan lamina l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ نَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٣٤

When We delivered him and his whole family

idh najjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٣٥

except an old woman, his wife, who perished among those that remained behind

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٣٦

Afterwards We destroyed the others

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَیۡهِم مُّصۡبِحِینَ ۝١٣٧

And ye, O people of Mecca, pass by the places where they once dwelt, as ye journey in the morning

wa-innakum latamurrūna ʿalayhim muṣ'biḥīn

5 Jonah and the Prophet's Triumph

وَبِٱلَّیۡلِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٣٨

and by night: Will ye not therefore understand

wabi-al-layli afalā taʿqilūn

وَإِنَّ یُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٩

Jonas was also one of those who were sent by Us

wa-inna yūnusa lamina l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١٤٠

When he fled into the loaded ship

idh abaqa ilā l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِینَ ۝١٤١

and those who were on board cast lots among themselves, and he was condemned

fasāhama fakāna mina l-mud'ḥaḍīn

فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ ٱلۡحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِیمࣱ ۝١٤٢

And the fish swallowed him; for he was worthy of reprehension

fal-taqamahu l-ḥūtu wahuwa mulīmu

فَلَوۡلَاۤ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِینَ ۝١٤٣

And if he had not been one of those who praised God

falawlā annahu kāna mina l-musabiḥīn

لَلَبِثَ فِی بَطۡنِهِۦۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٤٤

verily he had remained in the belly thereof until the day of resurrection

lalabitha fī baṭnihi ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn

۞ فَنَبَذۡنَـٰهُ بِٱلۡعَرَاۤءِ وَهُوَ سَقِیمࣱ ۝١٤٥

And We cast him on the naked shore, and he was sick

fanabadhnāhu bil-ʿarāi wahuwa saqīmu

وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ شَجَرَةࣰ مِّن یَقۡطِینࣲ ۝١٤٦

And We caused a plant of a gourd to grow up over him

wa-anbatnā ʿalayhi shajaratan min yaqṭīni

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلۡفٍ أَوۡ یَزِیدُونَ ۝١٤٧

and We sent him to an hundred thousand persons, or they were a greater number

wa-arsalnāhu ilā mi-ati alfin aw yazīdūn

فَءَامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٤٨

and they believed: Wherefore We granted them to enjoy this life, for a season

faāmanū famattaʿnāhum ilā ḥīni

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ ۝١٤٩

Inquire of the Meccans whether thy Lord hath daughters, and they sons

fa-is'taftihim alirabbika l-banātu walahumu l-banūn

أَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ إِنَـٰثࣰا وَهُمۡ شَـٰهِدُونَ ۝١٥٠

Have We created the angels of the female sex? And were they witnesses thereof

am khalaqnā l-malāikata ināthan wahum shāhidūn

أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُم مِّنۡ إِفۡكِهِمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٥١

Do they not say of their own false invention

alā innahum min if'kihim layaqūlūn

وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٥٢

God hath begotten issue? And are they not really liars

walada l-lahu wa-innahum lakādhibūn

أَصۡطَفَى ٱلۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلۡبَنِینَ ۝١٥٣

Hath he chosen daughters preferably to sons

aṣṭafā l-banāti ʿalā l-banīn

مَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝١٥٤

Ye have no reason to judge thus

mā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn

أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝١٥٥

Will ye not therefore be admonished

afalā tadhakkarūn

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٥٦

Or have ye a manifest proof of what ye say

am lakum sul'ṭānun mubīnu

فَأۡتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٧

Produce now your book of revelations, if ye speak truth

fatū bikitābikum in kuntum ṣādiqīn

وَجَعَلُوا۟ بَیۡنَهُۥ وَبَیۡنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبࣰاۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ ٱلۡجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٥٨

And they make Him to be of kin unto the genii; whereas the genii know that they who affirm such things, shall be delivered up to eternal punishment

wajaʿalū baynahu wabayna l-jinati nasaban walaqad ʿalimati l-jinatu innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn

سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٥٩

-- far be that from God, which they affirm of him! -

sub'ḥāna l-lahi ʿammā yaṣifūn

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٠

Except the sincere servants of God

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

فَإِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝١٦١

Moreover ye and that which ye worshi

fa-innakum wamā taʿbudūn

مَاۤ أَنتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ بِفَـٰتِنِینَ ۝١٦٢

shall not seduce any concerning God

mā antum ʿalayhi bifātinīn

إِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝١٦٣

except him who is destined to be burned in hell

illā man huwa ṣāli l-jaḥīm

وَمَا مِنَّاۤ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝١٦٤

There is none of us, but hath an appointed place

wamā minnā illā lahu maqāmun maʿlūmu

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلصَّاۤفُّونَ ۝١٦٥

We range ourselves in order, attending the commands of God

wa-innā lanaḥnu l-ṣāfūn

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ ۝١٦٦

and we celebrate the divine praise

wa-innā lanaḥnu l-musabiḥūn

وَإِن كَانُوا۟ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٦٧

The infidels said

wa-in kānū layaqūlūn

لَوۡ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكۡرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٦٨

if we had been favoured with a book of divine revelations, of those which were delivered to the ancients

law anna ʿindanā dhik'ran mina l-awalīn

لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٩

we had surely been sincere servants of God

lakunnā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٧٠

Yet now the Koran is revealed, they believe not therein; but hereafter shall they know the consequence of their unbelief

fakafarū bihi fasawfa yaʿlamūn

وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧١

Our word hath formerly been given unto our servants the apostles

walaqad sabaqat kalimatunā liʿibādinā l-mur'salīn

إِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ ۝١٧٢

that they should certainly be assisted against the infidels

innahum lahumu l-manṣūrūn

وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝١٧٣

and that our armies should surely be the conquerors

wa-inna jundanā lahumu l-ghālibūn

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٤

Turn aside therefore from them, for a season

fatawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni

وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٥

And see the calamities which shall afflict them; for they shall see thy future success and prosperity

wa-abṣir'hum fasawfa yub'ṣirūn

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝١٧٦

Do they therefore seek to hasten our vengeance

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَاۤءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٧

Verily when it shall descend into their courts, an evil morning shall it be unto those who were warned in vain

fa-idhā nazala bisāḥatihim fasāa ṣabāḥu l-mundharīn

وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٨

Turn aside from them therefore for a season

watawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni

وَأَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٩

and see: Hereafter shall they see thy success and their punishment

wa-abṣir fasawfa yub'ṣirūn

سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٨٠

Praise be unto thy Lord, the Lord who is far exalted above what they affirm of Him

sub'ḥāna rabbika rabbi l-ʿizati ʿammā yaṣifūn

وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٨١

And peace be on his apostles

wasalāmun ʿalā l-mur'salīn

وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٢

And praise be unto God, the Lord of all creatures

wal-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
