Surah 37. Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn up in Ranks, The Rangers (as-Saffat)

1 Unity will prevail
37:1 ›
وَٱلصَّـٰۤفَّـٰتِ صَفࣰّا ۝١
Muhammad Asad
CONSIDER these [messages] ranged in serried ranks
wal-ṣāfāti ṣaffa
37:2 ›
فَٱلزَّ ٰجِرَ ٰتِ زَجۡرࣰا ۝٢
Muhammad Asad
and restraining [from evil] by a call to restraint
fal-zājirāti zajra
37:3 ›
فَٱلتَّـٰلِیَـٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۝٣
Muhammad Asad
and conveying [to all the world] a reminder
fal-tāliyāti dhik'ra
37:4 ›
إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمۡ لَوَ ٰحِدࣱ ۝٤
Muhammad Asad
Verily, most surely, your God is One –
inna ilāhakum lawāḥidu
37:5 ›
رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَـٰرِقِ ۝٥
Muhammad Asad
the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them, and the Sustainer of all the points of sunrise
rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā warabbu l-mashāriq
37:6 ›
إِنَّا زَیَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا بِزِینَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ ۝٦
Muhammad Asad
Behold, We have adorned the skies nearest to the earth with the beauty of stars
innā zayyannā l-samāa l-dun'yā bizīnatin l-kawākib
37:7 ›
وَحِفۡظࣰا مِّن كُلِّ شَیۡطَـٰنࣲ مَّارِدࣲ ۝٧
Muhammad Asad
and have made them secure against every rebellious, satanic force
waḥif'ẓan min kulli shayṭānin māridi
37:8 ›
لَّا یَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَیُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبࣲ ۝٨
Muhammad Asad
[so that] they [who seek to learn the unknowable] should not be able to overhear the host on high, but shall be repelled from all sides
lā yassammaʿūna ilā l-mala-i l-aʿlā wayuq'dhafūna min kulli jānibi
37:9 ›
دُحُورࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ وَاصِبٌ ۝٩
Muhammad Asad
cast out [from all grace], with lasting suffering in store for them [in the life to come]
duḥūran walahum ʿadhābun wāṣibu
37:10 ›
إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ ثَاقِبࣱ ۝١٠
Muhammad Asad
but if anyone does succeed in snatching a glimpse [of such knowledge], he is [henceforth] pursued by a piercing flame
illā man khaṭifa l-khaṭfata fa-atbaʿahu shihābun thāqibu
37:11 ›
فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاۤۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّن طِینࣲ لَّازِبِۭ ۝١١
Muhammad Asad
AND NOW ask those [who deny the truth] to enlighten thee: Were they more difficult to create than all those [untold marvels] that We have created? - for, behold, them have We created out of [mere] clay commingled with water
fa-is'taftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqnā innā khalaqnāhum min ṭīnin lāzibi
37:12 ›
بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَیَسۡخَرُونَ ۝١٢
Muhammad Asad
Nay, but whereas thou dost marvel, they [only] scoff
bal ʿajib'ta wayaskharūn
37:13 ›
وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا یَذۡكُرُونَ ۝١٣
Muhammad Asad
and when they are reminded [of the truth], they refuse to take it to heart
wa-idhā dhukkirū lā yadhkurūn
37:14 ›
وَإِذَا رَأَوۡا۟ ءَایَةࣰ یَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ ۝١٤
Muhammad Asad
and when they become aware of a [divine] message, they turn it to ridicule
wa-idhā ra-aw āyatan yastaskhirūn
37:15 ›
وَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٥
Muhammad Asad
and say: “This is clearly nothing but [a mortal’s] spellbinding eloquence
waqālū in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnu
37:16 ›
أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝١٦
Muhammad Asad
Why - after we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? –
a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn
37:17 ›
أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝١٧
Muhammad Asad
and perhaps also our forebears of old?”
awaābāunā l-awalūn
37:18 ›
قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَ ٰخِرُونَ ۝١٨
Muhammad Asad
Say: “Yea, indeed - and most abject will you then be!” –
qul naʿam wa-antum dākhirūn
37:19 ›
فَإِنَّمَا هِیَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَ ٰحِدَةࣱ فَإِذَا هُمۡ یَنظُرُونَ ۝١٩
Muhammad Asad
for that [resurrection which they deride] will be [upon them of a sudden, as if it were] but a single accusing cry - and then, lo! they will begin to see [the truth]
fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidatun fa-idhā hum yanẓurūn
37:20 ›
وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰوَیۡلَنَا هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٢٠
Muhammad Asad
and will say: “Oh, woe unto us! This is the Day of Judgment!”
waqālū yāwaylanā hādhā yawmu l-dīn
37:21 ›
هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِی كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٢١
Muhammad Asad
[And they will be told:] “This is the Day of Distinction [between the true and the false - the Day] which you were wont to call a lie!”
hādhā yawmu l-faṣli alladhī kuntum bihi tukadhibūn
2 The Judgment
37:22 ›
۞ ٱحۡشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٢
Muhammad Asad
[And God will thus command:] “Assemble all those who were bent on evildoing, together with others of their ilk and [with] all that they were wont to worship
uḥ'shurū alladhīna ẓalamū wa-azwājahum wamā kānū yaʿbudūn
37:23 ›
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٢٣
Muhammad Asad
instead of God, and lead them all onto the way to the blazing fire
min dūni l-lahi fa-ih'dūhum ilā ṣirāṭi l-jaḥīm
37:24 ›
وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡءُولُونَ ۝٢٤
Muhammad Asad
and halt them [there]!” [And then,] behold, they shall be asked
waqifūhum innahum masūlūn
37:25 ›
مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ ۝٢٥
Muhammad Asad
“How is it that [now] you cannot succour one another?”
mā lakum lā tanāṣarūn
37:26 ›
بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ ۝٢٦
Muhammad Asad
Nay, but on that Day they would willingly surrender [to God]
bal humu l-yawma mus'taslimūn
37:27 ›
وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٢٧
Muhammad Asad
but [since it will be too late,] they will turn upon one another, demanding of each other [to relieve them of the burden of their past sins]
wa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn
37:28 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٨
Muhammad Asad
Some [of them] will say: “Behold, you were wont to approach us [deceptively] from the right!”
qālū innakum kuntum tatūnanā ʿani l-yamīn
37:29 ›
قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢٩
Muhammad Asad
[To which] the others will reply: “Nay, you yourselves were bereft of all faith
qālū bal lam takūnū mu'minīn
37:30 ›
وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَیۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا طَـٰغِینَ ۝٣٠
Muhammad Asad
Moreover, we had no power at all over you: nay, you were people filled with overweening arrogance
wamā kāna lanā ʿalaykum min sul'ṭānin bal kuntum qawman ṭāghīn
37:31 ›
فَحَقَّ عَلَیۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَاۤۖ إِنَّا لَذَاۤىِٕقُونَ ۝٣١
Muhammad Asad
But now our Sustainer’s word has come true against us [as well]: verily, we are bound to taste [the fruit of our sins]
faḥaqqa ʿalaynā qawlu rabbinā innā ladhāiqūn
37:32 ›
فَأَغۡوَیۡنَـٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِینَ ۝٣٢
Muhammad Asad
So then, [if it be true that] we have caused you to err grievously - behold, we ourselves had been lost in grievous error!”
fa-aghwaynākum innā kunnā ghāwīn
37:33 ›
فَإِنَّهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٣
Muhammad Asad
And, verily, on that Day they all will share in their common suffering
fa-innahum yawma-idhin fī l-ʿadhābi mush'tarikūn
37:34 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣٤
Muhammad Asad
Verily, thus shall We deal with all who were lost in sin
innā kadhālika nafʿalu bil-muj'rimīn
37:35 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۤا۟ إِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٣٥
Muhammad Asad
for, behold, whenever they were told, “There is no deity save God,” they would glory in their arrogance
innahum kānū idhā qīla lahum lā ilāha illā l-lahu yastakbirūn
37:36 ›
وَیَقُولُونَ أَىِٕنَّا لَتَارِكُوۤا۟ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرࣲ مَّجۡنُونِۭ ۝٣٦
Muhammad Asad
and would say, “Shall we, then, give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet?”
wayaqūlūna a-innā latārikū ālihatinā lishāʿirin majnūni
37:37 ›
بَلۡ جَاۤءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٣٧
Muhammad Asad
Nay, but he [whom you call a mad poet] has brought the truth; and he confirms the truth of [what the earlier of God’s] message-bearers [have taught]
bal jāa bil-ḥaqi waṣaddaqa l-mur'salīn
37:38 ›
إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَاۤىِٕقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِیمِ ۝٣٨
Muhammad Asad
Behold, you will indeed taste grievous suffering [in the life to come]
innakum ladhāiqū l-ʿadhābi l-alīm
37:39 ›
وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٩
Muhammad Asad
although you shall not be requited for aught but what you were wont to do
wamā tuj'zawna illā mā kuntum taʿmalūn
37:40 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٤٠
Muhammad Asad
Not so, however, God’s true servants
illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
37:41 ›
أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤١
Muhammad Asad
[in the hereafter,] theirs shall be a sustenance which they will recognize
ulāika lahum riz'qun maʿlūmu
37:42 ›
فَوَ ٰكِهُ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٤٢
Muhammad Asad
as the fruits [of their life on earth]; and honoured shall they be
fawākihu wahum muk'ramūn
37:43 ›
فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٤٣
Muhammad Asad
in gardens of bliss
fī jannāti l-naʿīm
37:44 ›
عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝٤٤
Muhammad Asad
facing one another [in love] upon thrones of happiness
yuṭāfu ʿalayhim bikasin min maʿīni
37:45 ›
یُطَافُ عَلَیۡهِم بِكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینِۭ ۝٤٥
Muhammad Asad
A cup will be passed round among them [with a drink] from unsullied springs
Yutafu AAalayhim bika/sin min maAAeenin
37:46 ›
بَیۡضَاۤءَ لَذَّةࣲ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِینَ ۝٤٦
Muhammad Asad
clear, delightful to those who drink it
bayḍāa ladhatin lilshāribīn
37:47 ›
لَا فِیهَا غَوۡلࣱ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا یُنزَفُونَ ۝٤٧
Muhammad Asad
no headiness will be in it, and they will not get drunk thereon
lā fīhā ghawlun walā hum ʿanhā yunzafūn
37:48 ›
وَعِندَهُمۡ قَـٰصِرَ ٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِینࣱ ۝٤٨
Muhammad Asad
And with them will be mates of modest gaze, most beautiful of eye
waʿindahum qāṣirātu l-ṭarfi ʿīnu
37:49 ›
كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَیۡضࣱ مَّكۡنُونࣱ ۝٤٩
Muhammad Asad
[as free of faults] as if they were hidden [ostrich] eggs
ka-annahunna bayḍun maknūnu
37:50 ›
فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٥٠
Muhammad Asad
And they will all turn to one another, asking each other [about their past lives]
fa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn
37:51 ›
قَالَ قَاۤىِٕلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّی كَانَ لِی قَرِینࣱ ۝٥١
Muhammad Asad
One of them speaks thus: “Behold, I had [on earth] a close companion
qāla qāilun min'hum innī kāna lī qarīnu
37:52 ›
یَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِینَ ۝٥٢
Muhammad Asad
who was wont to ask [me], ‘Why - art thou really one of those who believe it to be true
yaqūlu a-innaka lamina l-muṣadiqīn
37:53 ›
أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِینُونَ ۝٥٣
Muhammad Asad
[that] after we have died and become mere dust and bones we shall, forsooth, be brought to judgment?”’
a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamadīnūn
37:54 ›
قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ ۝٥٤
Muhammad Asad
[And] he adds: “Would you like to look [and see him]?” –
qāla hal antum muṭṭaliʿūn
37:55 ›
فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِی سَوَاۤءِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٥٥
Muhammad Asad
and then he looks and sees that [companion of his] in the midst of the blazing fire
fa-iṭṭalaʿa faraāhu fī sawāi l-jaḥīm
37:56 ›
قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِینِ ۝٥٦
Muhammad Asad
and says: “By God! Verily, thou hast almost destroyed me [too, O my erstwhile companion]
qāla tal-lahi in kidtta latur'dīn
37:57 ›
وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّی لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِینَ ۝٥٧
Muhammad Asad
for had it not been for my Sustainer’s favour, I would surely be [now] among those who are given over [to suffering]
walawlā niʿ'matu rabbī lakuntu mina l-muḥ'ḍarīn
37:58 ›
أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَیِّتِینَ ۝٥٨
Muhammad Asad
But then, [O my friends in paradise,] is it [really] so that we are not to die
afamā naḥnu bimayyitīn
37:59 ›
إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٥٩
Muhammad Asad
[again,] beyond our previous death, and that we shall never [again] be made to suffer
illā mawtatanā l-ūlā wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn
37:60 ›
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٦٠
Muhammad Asad
Verily, this - this indeed - is the triumph supreme!”
inna hādhā lahuwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm
37:61 ›
لِمِثۡلِ هَـٰذَا فَلۡیَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلُونَ ۝٦١
Muhammad Asad
For the like of this, then, let them labour, those who labour [in God’s way]
limith'li hādhā falyaʿmali l-ʿāmilūn
37:62 ›
أَذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ۝٦٢
Muhammad Asad
Is such [a paradise] the better welcome - or the [hellish] tree of deadly fruit
adhālika khayrun nuzulan am shajaratu l-zaqūm
37:63 ›
إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٦٣
Muhammad Asad
Verily, We have caused it to be a trial for evildoers
innā jaʿalnāhā fit'natan lilẓẓālimīn
37:64 ›
إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةࣱ تَخۡرُجُ فِیۤ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٤
Muhammad Asad
for, behold, it is a tree that grows in the very heart of the blazing fire [of hell]
innahā shajaratun takhruju fī aṣli l-jaḥīm
37:65 ›
طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینِ ۝٦٥
Muhammad Asad
its fruit [as repulsive] as satans’ heads
ṭalʿuhā ka-annahu ruūsu l-shayāṭīn
37:66 ›
فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٦٦
Muhammad Asad
and they [who are lost in evil] are indeed bound to eat thereof, and to fill their bellies therewith
fa-innahum laākilūna min'hā famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn
37:67 ›
ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَیۡهَا لَشَوۡبࣰا مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٦٧
Muhammad Asad
And, behold, above all this they will be confounded with burning despair
thumma inna lahum ʿalayhā lashawban min ḥamīmi
37:68 ›
ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٨
Muhammad Asad
And once again: Verily, the blazing fire is their ultimate goal –
thumma inna marjiʿahum la-ilā l-jaḥīm
37:69 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡا۟ ءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ ضَاۤلِّینَ ۝٦٩
Muhammad Asad
for, behold, they found their forebears on a wrong way
innahum alfaw ābāahum ḍāllīn
37:70 ›
فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمۡ یُهۡرَعُونَ ۝٧٠
Muhammad Asad
and [now] they make haste to follow in their footsteps
fahum ʿalā āthārihim yuh'raʿūn
37:71 ›
وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٧١
Muhammad Asad
Thus, indeed, most of the people of old went astray before them
walaqad ḍalla qablahum aktharu l-awalīn
37:72 ›
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِیهِم مُّنذِرِینَ ۝٧٢
Muhammad Asad
although, verily, We had sent warners unto them
walaqad arsalnā fīhim mundhirīn
37:73 ›
فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝٧٣
Muhammad Asad
and behold what happened in the end to those that had been warned [to no avail]
fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mundharīn
37:74 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٧٤
Muhammad Asad
EXCEPT for God’s true servants, [most people are apt to go astray.]
illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
3 Noah and Abraham
37:75 ›
وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحࣱ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِیبُونَ ۝٧٥
Muhammad Asad
And, indeed, [it was for this reason that] Noah cried unto Us - and how excellent was Our response
walaqad nādānā nūḥun falaniʿ'ma l-mujībūn
37:76 ›
وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٦
Muhammad Asad
for We saved him and his household from that awesome calamity
wanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm
37:77 ›
وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّیَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝٧٧
Muhammad Asad
and caused his offspring to endure [on earth]
wajaʿalnā dhurriyyatahu humu l-bāqīn
37:78 ›
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٧٨
Muhammad Asad
and We left him thus to be remembered among later generations
wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn
37:79 ›
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٩
Muhammad Asad
“Peace be upon Noah throughout all the worlds!”
salāmun ʿalā nūḥin fī l-ʿālamīn
37:80 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٨٠
Muhammad Asad
Verily, thus do We reward the doers of good –
innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:81 ›
إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨١
Muhammad Asad
for he was truly one of our believing servants
innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn
37:82 ›
ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٨٢
Muhammad Asad
[and so We saved him and those who followed him] and then We caused the others to drown
thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn
37:83 ›
۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِیعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٨٣
Muhammad Asad
AND, BEHOLD, of his persuasion was Abraham, too
wa-inna min shīʿatihi la-ib'rāhīm
37:84 ›
إِذۡ جَاۤءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمٍ ۝٨٤
Muhammad Asad
when he turned to his Sustainer with a heart free of evil
idh jāa rabbahu biqalbin salīmi
37:85 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٨٥
Muhammad Asad
and [thus] spoke to his father and his people: “What is it that you worship
idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mādhā taʿbudūn
37:86 ›
أَىِٕفۡكًا ءَالِهَةࣰ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِیدُونَ ۝٨٦
Muhammad Asad
Do you want [to bow down before] a lie - [before] deities other than God
a-if'kan ālihatan dūna l-lahi turīdūn
37:87 ›
فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٧
Muhammad Asad
What, then, do you think of the Sustainer of all the worlds?”
famā ẓannukum birabbi l-ʿālamīn
37:88 ›
فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةࣰ فِی ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٨٨
Muhammad Asad
Then he cast a glance at the stars
fanaẓara naẓratan fī l-nujūm
37:89 ›
فَقَالَ إِنِّی سَقِیمࣱ ۝٨٩
Muhammad Asad
and said, “Verily, I am sick [at heart]!”
faqāla innī saqīmu
37:90 ›
فَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِینَ ۝٩٠
Muhammad Asad
and at that they turned their backs on him and went away
fatawallaw ʿanhu mud'birīn
37:91 ›
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰۤ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٩١
Muhammad Asad
Thereupon he approached their gods stealthily and said, “What! You do not eat [of the offerings placed before you]
farāgha ilā ālihatihim faqāla alā takulūn
37:92 ›
مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ ۝٩٢
Muhammad Asad
What is amiss with you that you do not speak?”
mā lakum lā tanṭiqūn
37:93 ›
فَرَاغَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٣
Muhammad Asad
And then he fell upon them, smiting them with his right hand
farāgha ʿalayhim ḍarban bil-yamīn
37:94 ›
فَأَقۡبَلُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ یَزِفُّونَ ۝٩٤
Muhammad Asad
[But] then the others came towards him hurriedly [and accused him of his deed]
fa-aqbalū ilayhi yaziffūn
37:95 ›
قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ ۝٩٥
Muhammad Asad
He answered: “Do you worship something that you [yourselves] have carved
qāla ataʿbudūna mā tanḥitūn
37:96 ›
وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٦
Muhammad Asad
the while it is God who has created you and all your handiwork?”
wal-lahu khalaqakum wamā taʿmalūn
37:97 ›
قَالُوا۟ ٱبۡنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنۡیَـٰنࣰا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِی ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٩٧
Muhammad Asad
They exclaimed: “Build a pyre for him, and cast him into the blazing fire!”
qālū ib'nū lahu bun'yānan fa-alqūhu fī l-jaḥīm
37:98 ›
فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَیۡدࣰا فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِینَ ۝٩٨
Muhammad Asad
But whereas they sought to do evil unto him, We [frustrated their designs, and thus] brought them low
fa-arādū bihi kaydan fajaʿalnāhumu l-asfalīn
37:99 ›
وَقَالَ إِنِّی ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٩٩
Muhammad Asad
And [Abraham] said: “Verily, I shall [leave this land and] go wherever my Sustainer will guide me!”
waqāla innī dhāhibun ilā rabbī sayahdīn
37:100 ›
رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٠٠
Muhammad Asad
[And he prayed:] “O my Sustainer! Bestow upon me the gift of [a son who shall be] one of the righteous!” –
rabbi hab lī mina l-ṣāliḥīn
37:101 ›
فَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ حَلِیمࣲ ۝١٠١
Muhammad Asad
whereupon We gave him the glad tiding of a boy-child gentle [like himself]
fabasharnāhu bighulāmin ḥalīmi
37:102 ›
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعۡیَ قَالَ یَـٰبُنَیَّ إِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰ فِی ٱلۡمَنَامِ أَنِّیۤ أَذۡبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرَىٰۚ قَالَ یَـٰۤأَبَتِ ٱفۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُۖ سَتَجِدُنِیۤ إِن شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٠٢
Muhammad Asad
And [one day,] when [the child] had become old enough to share in his [father’s] endeavours, the latter said: “O my dear son! I have seen in a dream that I should sacrifice thee: consider, then, what would be thy view!” [Ishmael] answered: “O my father! Do as thou art bidden: thou wilt find me, if God so wills, among those who are patient in adversity!”
falammā balagha maʿahu l-saʿya qāla yābunayya innī arā fī l-manāmi annī adhbaḥuka fa-unẓur mādhā tarā qāla yāabati if'ʿal mā tu'maru satajidunī in shāa l-lahu mina l-ṣābirīn
37:103 ›
فَلَمَّاۤ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِینِ ۝١٠٣
Muhammad Asad
But as soon as the two had surrendered themselves to [what they thought to be] the will of God, and [Abraham] had laid him down on his face
falammā aslamā watallahu lil'jabīn
37:104 ›
وَنَـٰدَیۡنَـٰهُ أَن یَـٰۤإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ ۝١٠٤
Muhammad Asad
We called out to him: “O Abraham
wanādaynāhu an yāib'rāhīm
37:105 ›
قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡیَاۤۚ إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٠٥
Muhammad Asad
thou hast already fulfilled [the purpose of] that dream- vision!” Thus, verily, do We reward the doers of good
qad ṣaddaqta l-ru'yā innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:106 ›
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰۤؤُا۟ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٠٦
Muhammad Asad
for, behold, all this was indeed a trial, clear in itself
inna hādhā lahuwa l-balāu l-mubīn
37:107 ›
وَفَدَیۡنَـٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٠٧
Muhammad Asad
And We ransomed him with a tremendous sacrifice
wafadaynāhu bidhib'ḥin ʿaẓīmi
37:108 ›
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٠٨
Muhammad Asad
and left him thus to be remembered among later generations
wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn
37:109 ›
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝١٠٩
Muhammad Asad
“Peace be upon Abraham!”
salāmun ʿalā ib'rāhīm
37:110 ›
كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١١٠
Muhammad Asad
Thus do We reward the doers of good –
kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:111 ›
إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١١
Muhammad Asad
for he was truly one of our believing servants
innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn
37:112 ›
وَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِإِسۡحَـٰقَ نَبِیࣰّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١١٢
Muhammad Asad
And [in time] We gave him the glad tiding of Isaac, [who, too, would be] a prophet, one of the righteous
wabasharnāhu bi-is'ḥāqa nabiyyan mina l-ṣāliḥīn
37:113 ›
وَبَـٰرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ وَعَلَىٰۤ إِسۡحَـٰقَۚ وَمِن ذُرِّیَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنࣱ وَظَالِمࣱ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ مُبِینࣱ ۝١١٣
Muhammad Asad
and We blessed him and Isaac: but among the offspring of these two there were [destined] to be both doers of good and such as would glaringly sin against themselves
wabāraknā ʿalayhi waʿalā is'ḥāqa wamin dhurriyyatihimā muḥ'sinun waẓālimun linafsihi mubīnu
4 Moses, Aaron, Elias and Lot
37:114 ›
وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١١٤
Muhammad Asad
THUS, INDEED, did We bestow Our favour upon Moses and Aaron
walaqad manannā ʿalā mūsā wahārūn
37:115 ›
وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝١١٥
Muhammad Asad
and We saved them and their people from the awesome calamity [of bondage]
wanajjaynāhumā waqawmahumā mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm
37:116 ›
وَنَصَرۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝١١٦
Muhammad Asad
and succoured them, so that [in the end] it was they who achieved victory
wanaṣarnāhum fakānū humu l-ghālibīn
37:117 ›
وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِینَ ۝١١٧
Muhammad Asad
And We gave them the divine writ that made [right and wrong] distinct
waātaynāhumā l-kitāba l-mus'tabīn
37:118 ›
وَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَ ٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمَ ۝١١٨
Muhammad Asad
and guided them the straight way
wahadaynāhumā l-ṣirāṭa l-mus'taqīm
37:119 ›
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمَا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١١٩
Muhammad Asad
and left them thus to be remembered among later generations
wataraknā ʿalayhimā fī l-ākhirīn
37:120 ›
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١٢٠
Muhammad Asad
“Peace be upon Moses and Aaron!”
salāmun ʿalā mūsā wahārūn
37:121 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٢١
Muhammad Asad
Thus do We reward the doers of good –
innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:122 ›
إِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢٢
Muhammad Asad
for those two were truly among Our believing servants
innahumā min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn
37:123 ›
وَإِنَّ إِلۡیَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣
Muhammad Asad
AND, BEHOLD, Elijah [too] was indeed one of Our message-bearer
wa-inna il'yāsa lamina l-mur'salīn
37:124 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦۤ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤
Muhammad Asad
when he spoke [thus] to his people: “Will you not remain conscious of God
idh qāla liqawmihi alā tattaqūn
37:125 ›
أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلࣰا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقِینَ ۝١٢٥
Muhammad Asad
Will you invoke Baal and forsake [God,] the best of artisans
atadʿūna baʿlan watadharūna aḥsana l-khāliqīn
37:126 ›
ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٢٦
Muhammad Asad
God, your Sustainer and the Sustainer of your forebears of old?”
al-laha rabbakum warabba ābāikumu l-awalīn
37:127 ›
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٢٧
Muhammad Asad
But they gave him the lie: and therefore they will most surely be arraigned [on Judgment Day]
fakadhabūhu fa-innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn
37:128 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٢٨
Muhammad Asad
excepting only [those who were] God’s true servants
illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
37:129 ›
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٢٩
Muhammad Asad
and him We left thus to be remembered among later generations
wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn
37:130 ›
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِلۡ یَاسِینَ ۝١٣٠
Muhammad Asad
“Peace be upon Elijah and his followers!”
salāmun ʿalā il yāsīn
37:131 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٣١
Muhammad Asad
Verily, thus do We reward the doers of good –
innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:132 ›
إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٢
Muhammad Asad
for he was truly one of Our believing servants
innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn
37:133 ›
وَإِنَّ لُوطࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٣
Muhammad Asad
AND, BEHOLD, Lot was indeed one of Our message-bearers
wa-inna lūṭan lamina l-mur'salīn
37:134 ›
إِذۡ نَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٣٤
Muhammad Asad
[and so,] when [We decreed the doom of his sinful town,] We saved him and his household
idh najjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn
37:135 ›
إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٣٥
Muhammad Asad
except an old woman who was among those that stayed behind
illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn
37:136 ›
ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٣٦
Muhammad Asad
and then We utterly destroyed the others
thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn
37:137 ›
وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَیۡهِم مُّصۡبِحِینَ ۝١٣٧
Muhammad Asad
and, verily, [to this day] you pass by the remnants of their dwellings at morning-tim
wa-innakum latamurrūna ʿalayhim muṣ'biḥīn
5 Jonah and the Prophet's Triumph
37:138 ›
وَبِٱلَّیۡلِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٣٨
Muhammad Asad
and by night. Will you not, then, use your reason
wabi-al-layli afalā taʿqilūn
37:139 ›
وَإِنَّ یُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٩
Muhammad Asad
AND, BEHOLD, Jonah was indeed one of Our message-bearer
wa-inna yūnusa lamina l-mur'salīn
37:140 ›
إِذۡ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١٤٠
Muhammad Asad
when he fled like a runaway slave onto a laden ship
idh abaqa ilā l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn
37:141 ›
فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِینَ ۝١٤١
Muhammad Asad
And then they cast lots, and he was the one who lost
fasāhama fakāna mina l-mud'ḥaḍīn
37:142 ›
فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ ٱلۡحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِیمࣱ ۝١٤٢
Muhammad Asad
[and they cast him into the sea,] whereupon the great fish swallowed him, for he had been blameworthy
fal-taqamahu l-ḥūtu wahuwa mulīmu
37:143 ›
فَلَوۡلَاۤ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِینَ ۝١٤٣
Muhammad Asad
And had he not been of those who [even in the deep darkness of their distress are able to] extol God’s limitless glory
falawlā annahu kāna mina l-musabiḥīn
37:144 ›
لَلَبِثَ فِی بَطۡنِهِۦۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٤٤
Muhammad Asad
he would indeed have remained in its belly till the Day when all shall be raised from the dead
lalabitha fī baṭnihi ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn
37:145 ›
۞ فَنَبَذۡنَـٰهُ بِٱلۡعَرَاۤءِ وَهُوَ سَقِیمࣱ ۝١٤٥
Muhammad Asad
but We caused him to be cast forth on a desert shore, sick [at heart] as he was
fanabadhnāhu bil-ʿarāi wahuwa saqīmu
37:146 ›
وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ شَجَرَةࣰ مِّن یَقۡطِینࣲ ۝١٤٦
Muhammad Asad
and caused a creeping plant to grow over him [out of the barren soil]
wa-anbatnā ʿalayhi shajaratan min yaqṭīni
37:147 ›
وَأَرۡسَلۡنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلۡفٍ أَوۡ یَزِیدُونَ ۝١٤٧
Muhammad Asad
And [then] We sent him [once again] to [his people,] a hundred thousand [souls] or more
wa-arsalnāhu ilā mi-ati alfin aw yazīdūn
37:148 ›
فَءَامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٤٨
Muhammad Asad
and [this time] they believed [in him] and so We allowed them to enjoy their life during the time allotted to them
faāmanū famattaʿnāhum ilā ḥīni
37:149 ›
فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ ۝١٤٩
Muhammad Asad
AND NOW ask them to enlighten thee: Has thy Sustainer daughters, whereas they would have [only] sons
fa-is'taftihim alirabbika l-banātu walahumu l-banūn
37:150 ›
أَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ إِنَـٰثࣰا وَهُمۡ شَـٰهِدُونَ ۝١٥٠
Muhammad Asad
- or is it that We have created the angels female, and they [who believe them to be divine] have witnessed [that act of creation]
am khalaqnā l-malāikata ināthan wahum shāhidūn
37:151 ›
أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُم مِّنۡ إِفۡكِهِمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٥١
Muhammad Asad
Oh, verily, it is out of their own [inclination to] falsehood that some people assert
alā innahum min if'kihim layaqūlūn
37:152 ›
وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٥٢
Muhammad Asad
“God has begotten [a son]”; and, verily, they are lying [too, when they say]
walada l-lahu wa-innahum lakādhibūn
37:153 ›
أَصۡطَفَى ٱلۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلۡبَنِینَ ۝١٥٣
Muhammad Asad
“He has chosen daughters in preference to sons”
aṣṭafā l-banāti ʿalā l-banīn
37:154 ›
مَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝١٥٤
Muhammad Asad
What is amiss with you and your judgment
mā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn
37:155 ›
أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝١٥٥
Muhammad Asad
Will you not, then, bethink yourselves
afalā tadhakkarūn
37:156 ›
أَمۡ لَكُمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٥٦
Muhammad Asad
Or have you, perchance, a clear evidence [for your assertions]
am lakum sul'ṭānun mubīnu
37:157 ›
فَأۡتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٧
Muhammad Asad
Produce, then, that divine writ of yours, if you are speaking the truth
fatū bikitābikum in kuntum ṣādiqīn
37:158 ›
وَجَعَلُوا۟ بَیۡنَهُۥ وَبَیۡنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبࣰاۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ ٱلۡجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٥٨
Muhammad Asad
And some people have invented a kinship between Him and all manner of invisible forces although [even] these invisible forces know well that, verily, they [who thus blaspheme against God] shall indeed be arraigned [before Him on Judgment Day: for]
wajaʿalū baynahu wabayna l-jinati nasaban walaqad ʿalimati l-jinatu innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn
37:159 ›
سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٥٩
Muhammad Asad
limitless is God in His glory, above anything that men may devise by way of definition
sub'ḥāna l-lahi ʿammā yaṣifūn
37:160 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٠
Muhammad Asad
Not thus, however, [behave] God’s true servants
illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
37:161 ›
فَإِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝١٦١
Muhammad Asad
for, verily, neither you [blasphemers] nor the objects of your worship
fa-innakum wamā taʿbudūn
37:162 ›
مَاۤ أَنتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ بِفَـٰتِنِینَ ۝١٦٢
Muhammad Asad
can cause anyone to fall prey to your temptation
mā antum ʿalayhi bifātinīn
37:163 ›
إِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝١٦٣
Muhammad Asad
unless it be such as rushes towards the blazing fire [of his own accord]
illā man huwa ṣāli l-jaḥīm
37:164 ›
وَمَا مِنَّاۤ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝١٦٤
Muhammad Asad
[All forces of nature praise God and say:] “Among us, too, there is none but has a place assigned to it [by Him]
wamā minnā illā lahu maqāmun maʿlūmu
37:165 ›
وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلصَّاۤفُّونَ ۝١٦٥
Muhammad Asad
and, verily, we too are ranged [before Him in worship]
wa-innā lanaḥnu l-ṣāfūn
37:166 ›
وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ ۝١٦٦
Muhammad Asad
and, verily, we too extol His limitless glory!”
wa-innā lanaḥnu l-musabiḥūn
37:167 ›
وَإِن كَانُوا۟ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٦٧
Muhammad Asad
AND, INDEED, they [who deny the truth] have always been wont to say
wa-in kānū layaqūlūn
37:168 ›
لَوۡ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكۡرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٦٨
Muhammad Asad
“If only we had a tradition [to this effect] from our forebears
law anna ʿindanā dhik'ran mina l-awalīn
37:169 ›
لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٩
Muhammad Asad
we would certainly be true servants of God.”
lakunnā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
37:170 ›
فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٧٠
Muhammad Asad
And yet, [now that this divine writ has been placed before them,] they refuse to acknowledge it as true! In time, however, they will come to know [what it was that they had rejected]
fakafarū bihi fasawfa yaʿlamūn
37:171 ›
وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧١
Muhammad Asad
for, long ago has Our word gone forth unto Our servants, the message- bearers
walaqad sabaqat kalimatunā liʿibādinā l-mur'salīn
37:172 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ ۝١٧٢
Muhammad Asad
that, verily, they - they indeed - would be succoured
innahum lahumu l-manṣūrūn
37:173 ›
وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝١٧٣
Muhammad Asad
and that, verily, Our hosts - they indeed - would [in the end] be victorious
wa-inna jundanā lahumu l-ghālibūn
37:174 ›
فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٤
Muhammad Asad
Hence, turn thou aside for a while from those [who deny the truth]
fatawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni
37:175 ›
وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٥
Muhammad Asad
and see them [for what they are]; and in time they [too] will come to see [what they do not see now]
wa-abṣir'hum fasawfa yub'ṣirūn
37:176 ›
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝١٧٦
Muhammad Asad
Do they, then, [really] wish that Our chastisement be hastened on
afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn
37:177 ›
فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَاۤءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٧
Muhammad Asad
But then, once it alights upon them, hapless will be the awakening of those who were warned [to no avail]
fa-idhā nazala bisāḥatihim fasāa ṣabāḥu l-mundharīn
37:178 ›
وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٨
Muhammad Asad
Hence, turn thou aside for a while from them
watawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni
37:179 ›
وَأَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٩
Muhammad Asad
and see [them for what they are]; and in time they [too] will come to see [what they do not see now]
wa-abṣir fasawfa yub'ṣirūn
37:180 ›
سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٨٠
Muhammad Asad
LIMITLESS in His glory is thy Sustainer, the Lord of almightiness, [exalted] above anything that men may devise by way of definition
sub'ḥāna rabbika rabbi l-ʿizati ʿammā yaṣifūn
37:181 ›
وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٨١
Muhammad Asad
And peace be upon all His message-bearers
wasalāmun ʿalā l-mur'salīn
37:182 ›
وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٢
Muhammad Asad
And all praise is due to God alone, the Sustainer of all the worlds
wal-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
