Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn up in Ranks, The Rangers — Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Translation

37:1

وَٱلصَّـٰۤفَّـٰتِ صَفࣰّا ۝١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

By the ones standing in ranks, ranged in rows

wal-ṣāfāti ṣaffa

37:2

فَٱلزَّ ٰجِرَ ٰتِ زَجۡرࣰا ۝٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

then, ones who scare in a scaring

fal-zājirāti zajra

37:3

فَٱلتَّـٰلِیَـٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۝٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

then, ones who recount the Remembrance,

fal-tāliyāti dhik'ra

37:4

إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمۡ لَوَ ٰحِدࣱ ۝٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

truly, your God is One,

inna ilāhakum lawāḥidu

37:5

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَـٰرِقِ ۝٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them and the Lord of the sunrise.

rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā warabbu l-mashāriq

37:6

إِنَّا زَیَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا بِزِینَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ ۝٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, We made to appear pleasing the present heaven with the adornment of the stars

innā zayyannā l-samāa l-dun'yā bizīnatin l-kawākib

37:7

وَحِفۡظࣰا مِّن كُلِّ شَیۡطَـٰنࣲ مَّارِدࣲ ۝٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and keeping it safe from every emboldened Satan.

waḥif'ẓan min kulli shayṭānin māridi

37:8

لَّا یَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَیُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبࣲ ۝٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They pay no attention to the lofty Council for they are hurled at from every edge,

lā yassammaʿūna ilā l-mala-i l-aʿlā wayuq'dhafūna min kulli jānibi

37:9

دُحُورࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ وَاصِبٌ ۝٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

rejected. And for them is a punishment, that which lasts forever,

duḥūran walahum ʿadhābun wāṣibu

37:10

إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ ثَاقِبࣱ ۝١٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

but for him who snatched a fragment, then, a piercing flame pursued him.

illā man khaṭifa l-khaṭfata fa-atbaʿahu shihābun thāqibu

37:11

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاۤۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّن طِینࣲ لَّازِبِۭ ۝١١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So ask them for advice: Are they stronger in constitution or those others whom We created? Truly, We created them of clinging clay.

fa-is'taftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqnā innā khalaqnāhum min ṭīnin lāzibi

37:12

بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَیَسۡخَرُونَ ۝١٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Nay! Thou hadst marveled while they deride.

bal ʿajib'ta wayaskharūn

37:13

وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا یَذۡكُرُونَ ۝١٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when they were reminded, they remember not.

wa-idhā dhukkirū lā yadhkurūn

37:14

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡا۟ ءَایَةࣰ یَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ ۝١٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when they saw a sign, they scoff at it.

wa-idhā ra-aw āyatan yastaskhirūn

37:15

وَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And they said: This is not but clear sorcery.

waqālū in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnu

37:16

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝١٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Is it when we were dead and had been earth dust and bones that we will, truly, be ones who are raised up

a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn

37:17

أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝١٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and our fathers, the ancient ones?

awaābāunā l-awalūn

37:18

قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَ ٰخِرُونَ ۝١٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Say: Yes, you will be ones in a state of lowliness.

qul naʿam wa-antum dākhirūn

37:19

فَإِنَّمَا هِیَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَ ٰحِدَةࣱ فَإِذَا هُمۡ یَنظُرُونَ ۝١٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

There will be only one Scare. So when they will be looking on it,

fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidatun fa-idhā hum yanẓurūn

37:20

وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰوَیۡلَنَا هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٢٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

they will say: Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!

waqālū yāwaylanā hādhā yawmu l-dīn

37:21

هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِی كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٢١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

This is the Day of Decision which you had been denying.

hādhā yawmu l-faṣli alladhī kuntum bihi tukadhibūn

37:22

۞ ٱحۡشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Assemble those who did wrong and their spouses, and what they had been worshipping

uḥ'shurū alladhīna ẓalamū wa-azwājahum wamā kānū yaʿbudūn

37:23

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٢٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

—other than God—and guide them to the path to hellfire.

min dūni l-lahi fa-ih'dūhum ilā ṣirāṭi l-jaḥīm

37:24

وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡءُولُونَ ۝٢٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And stop them for they are ones who will be asked:

waqifūhum innahum masūlūn

37:25

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ ۝٢٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

What is the matter with you that you help not one another?

mā lakum lā tanāṣarūn

37:26

بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ ۝٢٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Nay! They are on that Day ones who will resign themselves to submission to God.

bal humu l-yawma mus'taslimūn

37:27

وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٢٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And some of them came forward to some others, demanding of one another.

wa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn

37:28

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They would say: Truly, you, you had been approaching us from the right.

qālū innakum kuntum tatūnanā ʿani l-yamīn

37:29

قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They would say: Nay! You are not ones who believe

qālū bal lam takūnū mu'minīn

37:30

وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَیۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا طَـٰغِینَ ۝٣٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and we had not been any authority over you. Nay! You had been a folk, ones who are defiant.

wamā kāna lanā ʿalaykum min sul'ṭānin bal kuntum qawman ṭāghīn

37:31

فَحَقَّ عَلَیۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَاۤۖ إِنَّا لَذَاۤىِٕقُونَ ۝٣١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So the saying was realized against us of our Lord. That, truly, we are ones who experience the punishment.

faḥaqqa ʿalaynā qawlu rabbinā innā ladhāiqūn

37:32

فَأَغۡوَیۡنَـٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِینَ ۝٣٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So we led you into error. Truly, we had been ones who are in error.

fa-aghwaynākum innā kunnā ghāwīn

37:33

فَإِنَّهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, truly, they will be on that Day ones who are partners in the punishment.

fa-innahum yawma-idhin fī l-ʿadhābi mush'tarikūn

37:34

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

We accomplish, thus, with the ones who sin.

innā kadhālika nafʿalu bil-muj'rimīn

37:35

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۤا۟ إِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٣٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, when it had been said to them: There is no god but God, they grow arrogant.

innahum kānū idhā qīla lahum lā ilāha illā l-lahu yastakbirūn

37:36

وَیَقُولُونَ أَىِٕنَّا لَتَارِكُوۤا۟ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرࣲ مَّجۡنُونِۭ ۝٣٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And they said: Are we ones who leave our gods for a possessed poet?

wayaqūlūna a-innā latārikū ālihatinā lishāʿirin majnūni

37:37

بَلۡ جَاۤءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٣٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Nay! He drew near with The Truth and he established as true the ones who are sent.

bal jāa bil-ḥaqi waṣaddaqa l-mur'salīn

37:38

إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَاۤىِٕقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِیمِ ۝٣٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, you are ones who will experience the painful punishment

innakum ladhāiqū l-ʿadhābi l-alīm

37:39

وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and you will be given recompense but for what you had been doing.

wamā tuj'zawna illā mā kuntum taʿmalūn

37:40

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٤٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But the devoted servants of God,

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

37:41

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

those, for them was a known provision

ulāika lahum riz'qun maʿlūmu

37:42

فَوَ ٰكِهُ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٤٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

—sweet fruits—and they will be ones who are honored

fawākihu wahum muk'ramūn

37:43

فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٤٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

in the Gardens of Bliss,

fī jannāti l-naʿīm

37:44

عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝٤٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

on couches—ones who face one another.

yuṭāfu ʿalayhim bikasin min maʿīni

37:45

یُطَافُ عَلَیۡهِم بِكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینِۭ ۝٤٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

A cup from a spring of water will be passed around,

Yutafu AAalayhim bika/sin min maAAeenin

37:46

بَیۡضَاۤءَ لَذَّةࣲ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِینَ ۝٤٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

white, a delight to ones who drink it.

bayḍāa ladhatin lilshāribīn

37:47

لَا فِیهَا غَوۡلࣱ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا یُنزَفُونَ ۝٤٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

In that is neither headache, nor are they intoxicated by it.

lā fīhā ghawlun walā hum ʿanhā yunzafūn

37:48

وَعِندَهُمۡ قَـٰصِرَ ٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِینࣱ ۝٤٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And with them are ones who are restraining their (f) glance, lovely eyed

waʿindahum qāṣirātu l-ṭarfi ʿīnu

37:49

كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَیۡضࣱ مَّكۡنُونࣱ ۝٤٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

as if they are well-guarded pearls.

ka-annahunna bayḍun maknūnu

37:50

فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٥٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So some of them will come forward to some others, demanding of one another.

fa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn

37:51

قَالَ قَاۤىِٕلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّی كَانَ لِی قَرِینࣱ ۝٥١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

One of them who converses would say: Truly, I had a comrade

qāla qāilun min'hum innī kāna lī qarīnu

37:52

یَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِینَ ۝٥٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

who would say: Art thou of the ones who establish the Resurrection as true?

yaqūlu a-innaka lamina l-muṣadiqīn

37:53

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِینُونَ ۝٥٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

When we are dead and had been earth dust and bones, will we be ones who are judged?

a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamadīnūn

37:54

قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ ۝٥٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He said: Will you be ones who peruse?

qāla hal antum muṭṭaliʿūn

37:55

فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِی سَوَاۤءِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٥٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So he perused and saw him amidst hellfire.

fa-iṭṭalaʿa faraāhu fī sawāi l-jaḥīm

37:56

قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِینِ ۝٥٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He said: By God, thou wert about to deal me destruction!

qāla tal-lahi in kidtta latur'dīn

37:57

وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّی لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِینَ ۝٥٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Had it not been for the divine blessing of my Lord I would have been of the ones who are charged.

walawlā niʿ'matu rabbī lakuntu mina l-muḥ'ḍarīn

37:58

أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَیِّتِینَ ۝٥٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Are we not, then, to be dead again

afamā naḥnu bimayyitīn

37:59

إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٥٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

but for our first death and will we not be ones who are punished?

illā mawtatanā l-ūlā wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

37:60

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٦٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, this, it is the winning the sublime triumph.

inna hādhā lahuwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

37:61

لِمِثۡلِ هَـٰذَا فَلۡیَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلُونَ ۝٦١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

For the like of this, let the ones who work, work.

limith'li hādhā falyaʿmali l-ʿāmilūn

37:62

أَذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ۝٦٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Is this better as hospitality or the tree of Zaqqum?

adhālika khayrun nuzulan am shajaratu l-zaqūm

37:63

إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٦٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, We made it a test for the ones who are unjust.

innā jaʿalnāhā fit'natan lilẓẓālimīn

37:64

إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةࣱ تَخۡرُجُ فِیۤ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, it is a tree that goes forth, its root in hellfire,

innahā shajaratun takhruju fī aṣli l-jaḥīm

37:65

طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینِ ۝٦٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

its spathes have been like the heads of satans.

ṭalʿuhā ka-annahu ruūsu l-shayāṭīn

37:66

فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٦٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So, truly, they, they are ones who eat from it, ones who fill their bellies with it.

fa-innahum laākilūna min'hā famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn

37:67

ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَیۡهَا لَشَوۡبࣰا مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٦٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Again, truly, on top of that for them is a brew of scalding water.

thumma inna lahum ʿalayhā lashawban min ḥamīmi

37:68

ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Again, truly, their return is to hellfire.

thumma inna marjiʿahum la-ilā l-jaḥīm

37:69

إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡا۟ ءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ ضَاۤلِّینَ ۝٦٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They discovered their fathers ones who go astray,

innahum alfaw ābāahum ḍāllīn

37:70

فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمۡ یُهۡرَعُونَ ۝٧٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

yet they are running in their footsteps.

fahum ʿalā āthārihim yuh'raʿūn

37:71

وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٧١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, certainly, went astray most of the ancient ones before them.

walaqad ḍalla qablahum aktharu l-awalīn

37:72

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِیهِم مُّنذِرِینَ ۝٧٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, certainly, We sent among them ones who warn.

walaqad arsalnā fīhim mundhirīn

37:73

فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝٧٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, look on how had been the Ultimate End of the ones who are warned,

fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mundharīn

37:74

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٧٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

but the devoted servants of God.

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

37:75

وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحࣱ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِیبُونَ ۝٧٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, certainly, Noah cried out to Us. And how excellent were the ones who answer!

walaqad nādānā nūḥun falaniʿ'ma l-mujībūn

37:76

وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We delivered him and his people from tremendous distress.

wanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm

37:77

وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّیَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝٧٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We made his offspring—they, the ones who remain.

wajaʿalnā dhurriyyatahu humu l-bāqīn

37:78

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٧٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We left for him to say with the later ones:

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

37:79

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Peace be on Noah among the worlds.

salāmun ʿalā nūḥin fī l-ʿālamīn

37:80

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٨٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Thus, We give recompense to the ones who are doers of good.

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

37:81

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, he is one of Our believing servants.

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

37:82

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٨٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Again, We drowned the others.

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

37:83

۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِیعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٨٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, among his partisans was Abraham.

wa-inna min shīʿatihi la-ib'rāhīm

37:84

إِذۡ جَاۤءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمٍ ۝٨٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

When he drew near his Lord with a pure-hearted heart,

idh jāa rabbahu biqalbin salīmi

37:85

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٨٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

when he said to his father and to his folk: What is it that you worship?

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mādhā taʿbudūn

37:86

أَىِٕفۡكًا ءَالِهَةࣰ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِیدُونَ ۝٨٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Is it a calumny that you want gods other than God!

a-if'kan ālihatan dūna l-lahi turīdūn

37:87

فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, what is your opinion about the Lord of the worlds?

famā ẓannukum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

37:88

فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةࣰ فِی ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٨٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And he looked on them with a glimpse at the stars

fanaẓara naẓratan fī l-nujūm

37:89

فَقَالَ إِنِّی سَقِیمࣱ ۝٨٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and he said: Truly, I am ill!

faqāla innī saqīmu

37:90

فَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِینَ ۝٩٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But they turned away from him as ones who draw back

fatawallaw ʿanhu mud'birīn

37:91

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰۤ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٩١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and he turned upon their gods then, said: Will you not eat?

farāgha ilā ālihatihim faqāla alā takulūn

37:92

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ ۝٩٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Why speak you not for yourselves?

mā lakum lā tanṭiqūn

37:93

فَرَاغَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, he turned upon them, striking them with his right hand.

farāgha ʿalayhim ḍarban bil-yamīn

37:94

فَأَقۡبَلُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ یَزِفُّونَ ۝٩٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, the people came forward towards him rushing.

fa-aqbalū ilayhi yaziffūn

37:95

قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ ۝٩٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He said: Worship you what you yourselves carve out

qāla ataʿbudūna mā tanḥitūn

37:96

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

while God created you and what you do?

wal-lahu khalaqakum wamā taʿmalūn

37:97

قَالُوا۟ ٱبۡنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنۡیَـٰنࣰا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِی ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٩٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They said: Build for him a structure. Then, cast him into hellfire.

qālū ib'nū lahu bun'yānan fa-alqūhu fī l-jaḥīm

37:98

فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَیۡدࣰا فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِینَ ۝٩٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So they wanted to use cunning against him, but We made them the lowest.

fa-arādū bihi kaydan fajaʿalnāhumu l-asfalīn

37:99

وَقَالَ إِنِّی ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٩٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He said: Truly, I am one who goes to my Lord. He will guide me.

waqāla innī dhāhibun ilā rabbī sayahdīn

37:100

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٠٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

My Lord! Bestow on me among the ones in accord with morality.

rabbi hab lī mina l-ṣāliḥīn

37:101

فَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ حَلِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So We gave him the good tidings of a forbearing boy.

fabasharnāhu bighulāmin ḥalīmi

37:102

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعۡیَ قَالَ یَـٰبُنَیَّ إِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰ فِی ٱلۡمَنَامِ أَنِّیۤ أَذۡبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرَىٰۚ قَالَ یَـٰۤأَبَتِ ٱفۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُۖ سَتَجِدُنِیۤ إِن شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٠٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when he reached maturity endeavoring with him, he said: O my son! Truly, I see while slumbering that I am sacrificing thee. So look on what thou hast considered? He said: O my father! Accomplish whatever thou art commanded. Thou wilt find me, if God willed, of the ones who remain steadfast.

falammā balagha maʿahu l-saʿya qāla yābunayya innī arā fī l-manāmi annī adhbaḥuka fa-unẓur mādhā tarā qāla yāabati if'ʿal mā tu'maru satajidunī in shāa l-lahu mina l-ṣābirīn

37:103

فَلَمَّاۤ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِینِ ۝١٠٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, when they both submitted themselves to God and he flung him on his brow

falammā aslamā watallahu lil'jabīn

37:104

وَنَـٰدَیۡنَـٰهُ أَن یَـٰۤإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ ۝١٠٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

We cried out to him: O Abraham!

wanādaynāhu an yāib'rāhīm

37:105

قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡیَاۤۚ إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٠٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Surely, thou hadst established the dream as true. Thus, We give recompense to the ones who are doers of good.

qad ṣaddaqta l-ru'yā innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

37:106

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰۤؤُا۟ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٠٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, that was, certainly, the clear trial.

inna hādhā lahuwa l-balāu l-mubīn

37:107

وَفَدَیۡنَـٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٠٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, then, We took ransom for him with a sublime slaughter

wafadaynāhu bidhib'ḥin ʿaẓīmi

37:108

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٠٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and We left for him a good name with the later ones:

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

37:109

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝١٠٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Peace be on Abraham!

salāmun ʿalā ib'rāhīm

37:110

كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١١٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Thus, We give recompense to the ones who are doers of good.

kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

37:111

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, he is one of Our believing servants.

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

37:112

وَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِإِسۡحَـٰقَ نَبِیࣰّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١١٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We gave him the good tidings of Isaac, a Prophet, among the ones in accord with morality.

wabasharnāhu bi-is'ḥāqa nabiyyan mina l-ṣāliḥīn

37:113

وَبَـٰرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ وَعَلَىٰۤ إِسۡحَـٰقَۚ وَمِن ذُرِّیَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنࣱ وَظَالِمࣱ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ مُبِینࣱ ۝١١٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their offspring are ones who are doers of good and ones who are clearly unjust to themselves.

wabāraknā ʿalayhi waʿalā is'ḥāqa wamin dhurriyyatihimā muḥ'sinun waẓālimun linafsihi mubīnu

37:114

وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١١٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, certainly We showed Our grace to Moses and Aaron.

walaqad manannā ʿalā mūsā wahārūn

37:115

وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝١١٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We delivered them and their folk from the tremendous distress

wanajjaynāhumā waqawmahumā mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm

37:116

وَنَصَرۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝١١٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and helped them so that they, they had been the ones who are victors.

wanaṣarnāhum fakānū humu l-ghālibīn

37:117

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِینَ ۝١١٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We gave them the manifest Book

waātaynāhumā l-kitāba l-mus'tabīn

37:118

وَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَ ٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمَ ۝١١٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and guided them to the straight path.

wahadaynāhumā l-ṣirāṭa l-mus'taqīm

37:119

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمَا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١١٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

We left for them a good name with the later ones:

wataraknā ʿalayhimā fī l-ākhirīn

37:120

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١٢٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Peace be on Moses and Aaron!

salāmun ʿalā mūsā wahārūn

37:121

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٢١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, thus, We give recompense to the ones who are doers of good.

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

37:122

إِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, they were of Our servants, ones who believe.

innahumā min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

37:123

وَإِنَّ إِلۡیَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, Elijah was of the ones who are sent

wa-inna il'yāsa lamina l-mur'salīn

37:124

إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦۤ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

when he said to his folk: Will you not be Godfearing?

idh qāla liqawmihi alā tattaqūn

37:125

أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلࣰا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقِینَ ۝١٢٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Will you call to Baal and forsake the fairer of ones who are the creators,

atadʿūna baʿlan watadharūna aḥsana l-khāliqīn

37:126

ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٢٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

God, your Lord and the Lord of your ancient fathers?

al-laha rabbakum warabba ābāikumu l-awalīn

37:127

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٢٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But they denied him, so they, truly, were ones who are charged.

fakadhabūhu fa-innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn

37:128

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٢٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

As for the devoted servants of God among them,

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

37:129

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٢٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

We left for him a good name with the later ones:

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

37:130

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِلۡ یَاسِینَ ۝١٣٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Peace be on Elijah!

salāmun ʿalā il yāsīn

37:131

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٣١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Thus, We give recompense to the ones who are doers of good.

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

37:132

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, he was of Our servants, ones who believe.

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

37:133

وَإِنَّ لُوطࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, Lot was of the ones who are sent.

wa-inna lūṭan lamina l-mur'salīn

37:134

إِذۡ نَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٣٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

We delivered him and his people, one and all,

idh najjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

37:135

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٣٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

but an old woman of the ones who stay behind.

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

37:136

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٣٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Again, We destroyed the others.

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

37:137

وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَیۡهِم مُّصۡبِحِینَ ۝١٣٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, you pass by them in that which is morning

wa-innakum latamurrūna ʿalayhim muṣ'biḥīn

37:138

وَبِٱلَّیۡلِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٣٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and at night. Will you not, then, be reasonable?

wabi-al-layli afalā taʿqilūn

37:139

وَإِنَّ یُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, Jonah was of the ones who are sent

wa-inna yūnusa lamina l-mur'salīn

37:140

إِذۡ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١٤٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

when he fled, without his Lord’s permission, to the laden boat.

idh abaqa ilā l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

37:141

فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِینَ ۝١٤١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He cast lots with them and he had been of the ones who are refuted.

fasāhama fakāna mina l-mud'ḥaḍīn

37:142

فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ ٱلۡحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِیمࣱ ۝١٤٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, the great fish engulfed him while he was one who is answerable.

fal-taqamahu l-ḥūtu wahuwa mulīmu

37:143

فَلَوۡلَاۤ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِینَ ۝١٤٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

If he had not been of the ones who glorify,

falawlā annahu kāna mina l-musabiḥīn

37:144

لَلَبِثَ فِی بَطۡنِهِۦۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٤٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

he would have lingered in expectation in its belly until the Day they are raised up.

lalabitha fī baṭnihi ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn

37:145

۞ فَنَبَذۡنَـٰهُ بِٱلۡعَرَاۤءِ وَهُوَ سَقِیمࣱ ۝١٤٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was ill.

fanabadhnāhu bil-ʿarāi wahuwa saqīmu

37:146

وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ شَجَرَةࣰ مِّن یَقۡطِینࣲ ۝١٤٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

We caused a vine of gourd to develop over him.

wa-anbatnā ʿalayhi shajaratan min yaqṭīni

37:147

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلۡفٍ أَوۡ یَزِیدُونَ ۝١٤٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

We sent him to a community of a hundred thousand, or they even exceed that.

wa-arsalnāhu ilā mi-ati alfin aw yazīdūn

37:148

فَءَامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٤٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment for a while.

faāmanū famattaʿnāhum ilā ḥīni

37:149

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ ۝١٤٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, ask them for advice: Are daughters for thy Lord and for them, sons?

fa-is'taftihim alirabbika l-banātu walahumu l-banūn

37:150

أَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ إِنَـٰثࣰا وَهُمۡ شَـٰهِدُونَ ۝١٥٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Or created We female angels while they were ones who bear witness?

am khalaqnā l-malāikata ināthan wahum shāhidūn

37:151

أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُم مِّنۡ إِفۡكِهِمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٥١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, it is out of their calumny that they say:

alā innahum min if'kihim layaqūlūn

37:152

وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٥٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

God procreated! And, truly, they are ones who lie.

walada l-lahu wa-innahum lakādhibūn

37:153

أَصۡطَفَى ٱلۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلۡبَنِینَ ۝١٥٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Favored He daughters over sons?

aṣṭafā l-banāti ʿalā l-banīn

37:154

مَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝١٥٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

What is the matter with you? How you give judgment!

mā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn

37:155

أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝١٥٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Will you not, then, recollect?

afalā tadhakkarūn

37:156

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٥٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Or is there for you a clear authority?

am lakum sul'ṭānun mubīnu

37:157

فَأۡتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Then, bring your Book if you would be ones who are sincere.

fatū bikitābikum in kuntum ṣādiqīn

37:158

وَجَعَلُوا۟ بَیۡنَهُۥ وَبَیۡنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبࣰاۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ ٱلۡجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٥٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And they made kindred between him and between the genies. But, surely, the genies knew well that they were ones who will be charged.

wajaʿalū baynahu wabayna l-jinati nasaban walaqad ʿalimati l-jinatu innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn

37:159

سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٥٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Glory be to God from what they allege,

sub'ḥāna l-lahi ʿammā yaṣifūn

37:160

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

but not the devoted servants of God.

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

37:161

فَإِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝١٦١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So, truly, you and those whom you worship

fa-innakum wamā taʿbudūn

37:162

مَاۤ أَنتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ بِفَـٰتِنِینَ ۝١٦٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

will not be ones who are tempters against Him,

mā antum ʿalayhi bifātinīn

37:163

إِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝١٦٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

but he who would be one who roasts in hellfire.

illā man huwa ṣāli l-jaḥīm

37:164

وَمَا مِنَّاۤ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝١٦٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

There is not any of us but he has a known station.

wamā minnā illā lahu maqāmun maʿlūmu

37:165

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلصَّاۤفُّونَ ۝١٦٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And we are ones who are standing in ranks.

wa-innā lanaḥnu l-ṣāfūn

37:166

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ ۝١٦٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And we are the ones who glorify.

wa-innā lanaḥnu l-musabiḥūn

37:167

وَإِن كَانُوا۟ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٦٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, they had been saying:

wa-in kānū layaqūlūn

37:168

لَوۡ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكۡرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٦٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Had been with us a Remembrance from the ancient ones,

law anna ʿindanā dhik'ran mina l-awalīn

37:169

لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

we would have been servants of God, ones who are devoted,

lakunnā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

37:170

فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٧٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

but they were ungrateful for it. and soon they will know.

fakafarū bihi fasawfa yaʿlamūn

37:171

وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, certainly, Our Word preceded for Our servants, the ones who are sent.

walaqad sabaqat kalimatunā liʿibādinā l-mur'salīn

37:172

إِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ ۝١٧٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

They, truly, they are ones who shall be helped.

innahum lahumu l-manṣūrūn

37:173

وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝١٧٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, truly, Our armies are the ones who are victors.

wa-inna jundanā lahumu l-ghālibūn

37:174

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

So turn thou away from them for awhile

fatawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni

37:175

وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and perceive them and soon they will perceive.

wa-abṣir'hum fasawfa yub'ṣirūn

37:176

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝١٧٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Are they impatient for Our punishment?

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

37:177

فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَاۤءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٧

Then, when it would come down into their courtyard, how evil will be the morning daybreak of the ones who are warned!

fa-idhā nazala bisāḥatihim fasāa ṣabāḥu l-mundharīn

37:178

وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٨

So turn thou away from them for a while,

watawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni

37:179

وَأَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and perceive and they will perceive.

wa-abṣir fasawfa yub'ṣirūn

37:180

سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٨٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Glory be to thy Lord, the Lord of Great Glory, from what they allege about Him.

sub'ḥāna rabbika rabbi l-ʿizati ʿammā yaṣifūn

37:181

وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٨١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And peace be to the ones who are sent.

wasalāmun ʿalā l-mur'salīn

37:182

وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And The Praise belongs to God, the Lord of the worlds!

wal-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
