Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn up in Ranks, The Rangers — Sher Ali Translation – Parallel Quran

1 Unity will prevail

وَٱلصَّـٰۤفَّـٰتِ صَفࣰّا ۝١

By those who range themselves in close ranks

wal-ṣāfāti ṣaffa

فَٱلزَّ ٰجِرَ ٰتِ زَجۡرࣰا ۝٢

And those who repel evil vigorously

fal-zājirāti zajra

فَٱلتَّـٰلِیَـٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۝٣

And those who recite the Reminder - the Qur'an

fal-tāliyāti dhik'ra

إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمۡ لَوَ ٰحِدࣱ ۝٤

Surely, your God is One

inna ilāhakum lawāḥidu

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَـٰرِقِ ۝٥

Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them and the Lord of the places from which light spreads forth

rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā warabbu l-mashāriq

إِنَّا زَیَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا بِزِینَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ ۝٦

WE have adorned the lowest heaven with an adornment - the planets

innā zayyannā l-samāa l-dun'yā bizīnatin l-kawākib

وَحِفۡظࣰا مِّن كُلِّ شَیۡطَـٰنࣲ مَّارِدࣲ ۝٧

And have guarded it against all rebellious satans

waḥif'ẓan min kulli shayṭānin māridi

لَّا یَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَیُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبࣲ ۝٨

They cannot listen to anything from the Exalted Assembly of angels - and they are pelted from every side

lā yassammaʿūna ilā l-mala-i l-aʿlā wayuq'dhafūna min kulli jānibi

دُحُورࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ وَاصِبٌ ۝٩

Repulsed, and for them is a perpetual punishment

duḥūran walahum ʿadhābun wāṣibu

إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ ثَاقِبࣱ ۝١٠

But if any of them snatches away something by stealth, he is pursued by a piecing flame

illā man khaṭifa l-khaṭfata fa-atbaʿahu shihābun thāqibu

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاۤۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّن طِینࣲ لَّازِبِۭ ۝١١

So ask them whether it is they who are harder to create, or those others whom WE have created? Them WE have created of cohesive clay

fa-is'taftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqnā innā khalaqnāhum min ṭīnin lāzibi

بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَیَسۡخَرُونَ ۝١٢

Nay, thou dost wonder at what they say, and they ridicule what thou sayest

bal ʿajib'ta wayaskharūn

وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا یَذۡكُرُونَ ۝١٣

And when they are admonished, they pay no heed

wa-idhā dhukkirū lā yadhkurūn

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡا۟ ءَایَةࣰ یَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ ۝١٤

And when they see a Sign, they mock at it

wa-idhā ra-aw āyatan yastaskhirūn

وَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٥

And they say, this is nothing but plain sorcery

waqālū in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnu

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝١٦

`What ! when we are dead and have become dust and broken bones, shall we then be raised up again

a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn

أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝١٧

`And our fathers of yore also?

awaābāunā l-awalūn

قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَ ٰخِرُونَ ۝١٨

Say, `Yea; and you will, then, be abased.

qul naʿam wa-antum dākhirūn

فَإِنَّمَا هِیَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَ ٰحِدَةࣱ فَإِذَا هُمۡ یَنظُرُونَ ۝١٩

It will be but one stern call, and lo ! they will be up and seeing

fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidatun fa-idhā hum yanẓurūn

وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰوَیۡلَنَا هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٢٠

And they will say, `Alas for us ! this is the Day of Requital.

waqālū yāwaylanā hādhā yawmu l-dīn

هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِی كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٢١

ALLAH will say, `This is the day of the final Decision which you used to deny.

hādhā yawmu l-faṣli alladhī kuntum bihi tukadhibūn

2 The Judgment

۞ ٱحۡشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٢

The angels will be commanded: `Assemble those who acted wrongfully along with their companions and what they used to worshi

uḥ'shurū alladhīna ẓalamū wa-azwājahum wamā kānū yaʿbudūn

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٢٣

`Beside ALLAH; and lead them along the path of Hell

min dūni l-lahi fa-ih'dūhum ilā ṣirāṭi l-jaḥīm

وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡءُولُونَ ۝٢٤

`And stop them, for they shall be questioned.

waqifūhum innahum masūlūn

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ ۝٢٥

They will be asked, `What is the matter with you that you help not one another?

mā lakum lā tanāṣarūn

بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ ۝٢٦

Nay, on that day they will surrender themselves completely

bal humu l-yawma mus'taslimūn

وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٢٧

And some of them will address others, questioning one another

wa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٨

They will say, `Verily you used to come to us from the right.

qālū innakum kuntum tatūnanā ʿani l-yamīn

قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢٩

The others will answer, `Nay, you yourselves were not believers

qālū bal lam takūnū mu'minīn

وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَیۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا طَـٰغِینَ ۝٣٠

`And we had no power over you; but you yourselves were a transgressing people

wamā kāna lanā ʿalaykum min sul'ṭānin bal kuntum qawman ṭāghīn

فَحَقَّ عَلَیۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَاۤۖ إِنَّا لَذَاۤىِٕقُونَ ۝٣١

`Now the word of our Lord has been fulfilled against us that we must taste the punishment

faḥaqqa ʿalaynā qawlu rabbinā innā ladhāiqūn

فَأَغۡوَیۡنَـٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِینَ ۝٣٢

`And we caused you to go astray for we ourselves had gone astray.

fa-aghwaynākum innā kunnā ghāwīn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٣

Truly, on that day they will all be sharers in the punishment

fa-innahum yawma-idhin fī l-ʿadhābi mush'tarikūn

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣٤

Surely, thus do WE deal with the guilty

innā kadhālika nafʿalu bil-muj'rimīn

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۤا۟ إِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٣٥

For when it was said to them, `There is no god but ALLAH, they behaved arrogantly

innahum kānū idhā qīla lahum lā ilāha illā l-lahu yastakbirūn

وَیَقُولُونَ أَىِٕنَّا لَتَارِكُوۤا۟ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرࣲ مَّجۡنُونِۭ ۝٣٦

And said, `Shall we give up our gods for a mad poet?

wayaqūlūna a-innā latārikū ālihatinā lishāʿirin majnūni

بَلۡ جَاۤءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٣٧

Nay, he has brought the truth and has testified to the truth of all the Messengers

bal jāa bil-ḥaqi waṣaddaqa l-mur'salīn

إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَاۤىِٕقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِیمِ ۝٣٨

You shall, surely, taste the painful punishment

innakum ladhāiqū l-ʿadhābi l-alīm

وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٩

And you will be requited only for what you have wrought

wamā tuj'zawna illā mā kuntum taʿmalūn

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٤٠

Save the chosen servants of ALLAH

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤١

They will have a known provision

ulāika lahum riz'qun maʿlūmu

فَوَ ٰكِهُ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٤٢

Fruits; and they shall be honoured

fawākihu wahum muk'ramūn

فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٤٣

In the Gardens of Bliss

fī jannāti l-naʿīm

عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝٤٤

Seated on thrones, facing one another

yuṭāfu ʿalayhim bikasin min maʿīni

یُطَافُ عَلَیۡهِم بِكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینِۭ ۝٤٥

They will be served round with a cup from a flowing fountain

Yutafu AAalayhim bika/sin min maAAeenin

بَیۡضَاۤءَ لَذَّةࣲ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِینَ ۝٤٦

Sparkling white, delicious to the drinkers

bayḍāa ladhatin lilshāribīn

لَا فِیهَا غَوۡلࣱ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا یُنزَفُونَ ۝٤٧

Wherein there will be no intoxication, nor will they be exhausted thereby

lā fīhā ghawlun walā hum ʿanhā yunzafūn

وَعِندَهُمۡ قَـٰصِرَ ٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِینࣱ ۝٤٨

And with them will be chaste women, with restrained looks and large beautiful eyes

waʿindahum qāṣirātu l-ṭarfi ʿīnu

كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَیۡضࣱ مَّكۡنُونࣱ ۝٤٩

As though they were sheltered eggs

ka-annahunna bayḍun maknūnu

فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٥٠

Then some of them will address the others, questioning one another

fa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn

قَالَ قَاۤىِٕلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّی كَانَ لِی قَرِینࣱ ۝٥١

A speaker from among them will say, `I had an intimate companion

qāla qāilun min'hum innī kāna lī qarīnu

یَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِینَ ۝٥٢

`Who used to say, `Art thou, indeed, among those who believe the Resurrection to be true

yaqūlu a-innaka lamina l-muṣadiqīn

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِینُونَ ۝٥٣

`When we are dead, and have become dust and broken bones, shall we indeed, be requited?

a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamadīnūn

قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ ۝٥٤

The speaker will then ask those around him, `Will you have a look and find out about him?

qāla hal antum muṭṭaliʿūn

فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِی سَوَاۤءِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٥٥

Then he will look himself and see him in the midst of the Fire

fa-iṭṭalaʿa faraāhu fī sawāi l-jaḥīm

قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِینِ ۝٥٦

And will say to him, `By ALLAH, thou hadst almost caused my ruin

qāla tal-lahi in kidtta latur'dīn

وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّی لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِینَ ۝٥٧

But for the grace of my Lord, I should, surely, have been of those who are called up before Hell

walawlā niʿ'matu rabbī lakuntu mina l-muḥ'ḍarīn

أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَیِّتِینَ ۝٥٨

`Tell me, is it not so that we are not going to suffer death again

afamā naḥnu bimayyitīn

إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٥٩

`Save our first death, and that we are not to be punished

illā mawtatanā l-ūlā wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٦٠

Surely, this is the supreme triumph.

inna hādhā lahuwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm

لِمِثۡلِ هَـٰذَا فَلۡیَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلُونَ ۝٦١

For the like of this, then, let the workers work

limith'li hādhā falyaʿmali l-ʿāmilūn

أَذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ۝٦٢

Is that better as an entertainment, of the tree of Zaqqhm?

adhālika khayrun nuzulan am shajaratu l-zaqūm

إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٦٣

Verily, WE have made it a trial for the wrongdoers

innā jaʿalnāhā fit'natan lilẓẓālimīn

إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةࣱ تَخۡرُجُ فِیۤ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٤

It is a tree that springs forth in the bottom of Hell

innahā shajaratun takhruju fī aṣli l-jaḥīm

طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینِ ۝٦٥

The fruit thereof is as though it were the heads of serpents

ṭalʿuhā ka-annahu ruūsu l-shayāṭīn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٦٦

And they shall eat of it and fill their bellies therewith

fa-innahum laākilūna min'hā famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn

ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَیۡهَا لَشَوۡبࣰا مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٦٧

Then will they have in addition to it a mixture of boiling water to drink

thumma inna lahum ʿalayhā lashawban min ḥamīmi

ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٨

Then, surely, their return shall be Hell

thumma inna marjiʿahum la-ilā l-jaḥīm

إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡا۟ ءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ ضَاۤلِّینَ ۝٦٩

They found their fathers erring

innahum alfaw ābāahum ḍāllīn

فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمۡ یُهۡرَعُونَ ۝٧٠

And they hurried on in their footsteps

fahum ʿalā āthārihim yuh'raʿūn

وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٧١

And most of the ancient peoples had erred before them

walaqad ḍalla qablahum aktharu l-awalīn

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِیهِم مُّنذِرِینَ ۝٧٢

And WE had sent Warners among them

walaqad arsalnā fīhim mundhirīn

فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝٧٣

Behold, then, how evil was the end of those who were warned

fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mundharīn

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٧٤

Save the chosen servants of ALLAH

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

3 Noah and Abraham

وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحࣱ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِیبُونَ ۝٧٥

And Noah, indeed, did cry unto US, and how excellent Answerer of Prayers are WE

walaqad nādānā nūḥun falaniʿ'ma l-mujībūn

وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٦

And WE saved him and his family from the great distress

wanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm

وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّیَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝٧٧

And WE made his offspring the only survivors

wajaʿalnā dhurriyyatahu humu l-bāqīn

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٧٨

And WE left for him a good name among the later generations

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٩

Peace be upon Noah among the peoples

salāmun ʿalā nūḥin fī l-ʿālamīn

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٨٠

Thus, indeed, do WE reward those who do good

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨١

He was, surely, one of our believing servants

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٨٢

Then WE drowned the others

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِیعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٨٣

And, verily, of his party was Abraham

wa-inna min shīʿatihi la-ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ جَاۤءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمٍ ۝٨٤

When he came to his Lord with a pure heart

idh jāa rabbahu biqalbin salīmi

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٨٥

When he said to his father and to his people, `What is it that you worship

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mādhā taʿbudūn

أَىِٕفۡكًا ءَالِهَةࣰ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِیدُونَ ۝٨٦

`A lie - false gods beside ALLAH do you desire

a-if'kan ālihatan dūna l-lahi turīdūn

فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٧

`What think ye of the Lord of the worlds?

famā ẓannukum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةࣰ فِی ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٨٨

Then he cast a glance at the stars

fanaẓara naẓratan fī l-nujūm

فَقَالَ إِنِّی سَقِیمࣱ ۝٨٩

And said, `I am feeling unwell.

faqāla innī saqīmu

فَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِینَ ۝٩٠

So they went away from him, turning their backs

fatawallaw ʿanhu mud'birīn

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰۤ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٩١

The he went quietly to their gods and addressing them said, `Will you not eat

farāgha ilā ālihatihim faqāla alā takulūn

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ ۝٩٢

`What is the matter with you that you speak not?

mā lakum lā tanṭiqūn

فَرَاغَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٣

The he turned upon them, striking them with the right hand

farāgha ʿalayhim ḍarban bil-yamīn

فَأَقۡبَلُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ یَزِفُّونَ ۝٩٤

Thereupon the people came towards him, hastening

fa-aqbalū ilayhi yaziffūn

قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ ۝٩٥

He said, `Do you worship that which you yourselves carve out

qāla ataʿbudūna mā tanḥitūn

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٦

`Whereas ALLAH has created you and also your handiwork?

wal-lahu khalaqakum wamā taʿmalūn

قَالُوا۟ ٱبۡنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنۡیَـٰنࣰا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِی ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٩٧

They said, `Build for him a structure and cast him into the fire.

qālū ib'nū lahu bun'yānan fa-alqūhu fī l-jaḥīm

فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَیۡدࣰا فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِینَ ۝٩٨

Thus they designed an evil design against him, but WE made them most humiliated

fa-arādū bihi kaydan fajaʿalnāhumu l-asfalīn

وَقَالَ إِنِّی ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٩٩

And he said, `I am going to my Lord. HE will, surely, guide me.

waqāla innī dhāhibun ilā rabbī sayahdīn

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٠٠

And he prayed, `My Lord, grant me a righteous son

rabbi hab lī mina l-ṣāliḥīn

فَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ حَلِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

So WE gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing son

fabasharnāhu bighulāmin ḥalīmi

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعۡیَ قَالَ یَـٰبُنَیَّ إِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰ فِی ٱلۡمَنَامِ أَنِّیۤ أَذۡبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرَىٰۚ قَالَ یَـٰۤأَبَتِ ٱفۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُۖ سَتَجِدُنِیۤ إِن شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٠٢

And when he was old enough to run along with him, he said, `O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I offer thee in sacrifice. So consider what thou thinkest of it !' He replied, `O my father, do as thou art commanded; thou wilt find me, if ALLAH please, steadfast in my faith.

falammā balagha maʿahu l-saʿya qāla yābunayya innī arā fī l-manāmi annī adhbaḥuka fa-unẓur mādhā tarā qāla yāabati if'ʿal mā tu'maru satajidunī in shāa l-lahu mina l-ṣābirīn

فَلَمَّاۤ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِینِ ۝١٠٣

And when they both submitted to the will of God, and Abraham had thrown him down on his forehead

falammā aslamā watallahu lil'jabīn

وَنَـٰدَیۡنَـٰهُ أَن یَـٰۤإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ ۝١٠٤

WE called to him, `O Abraham

wanādaynāhu an yāib'rāhīm

قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡیَاۤۚ إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٠٥

`Thou hast, indeed, fulfilled the dream.' Thus, indeed, do WE reward those who do good

qad ṣaddaqta l-ru'yā innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰۤؤُا۟ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٠٦

That, surely, was a manifest trial

inna hādhā lahuwa l-balāu l-mubīn

وَفَدَیۡنَـٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٠٧

And WE ransomed him with a mighty sacrifice

wafadaynāhu bidhib'ḥin ʿaẓīmi

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٠٨

And WE left for him a good name among the succeeding generations

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝١٠٩

Peace be upon Abraham

salāmun ʿalā ib'rāhīm

كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١١٠

Thus do WE reward those who do good

kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١١

Surely, he was one of our believing servants

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

وَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِإِسۡحَـٰقَ نَبِیࣰّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١١٢

And WE gave him the glad tidings of Isaac, a Prophet, and one of the righteous

wabasharnāhu bi-is'ḥāqa nabiyyan mina l-ṣāliḥīn

وَبَـٰرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ وَعَلَىٰۤ إِسۡحَـٰقَۚ وَمِن ذُرِّیَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنࣱ وَظَالِمࣱ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ مُبِینࣱ ۝١١٣

And WE bestowed blessings on him and on Isaac. And among their progeny are some who do good and others who clearly wrong themselves

wabāraknā ʿalayhi waʿalā is'ḥāqa wamin dhurriyyatihimā muḥ'sinun waẓālimun linafsihi mubīnu

4 Moses, Aaron, Elias and Lot

وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١١٤

And, indeed, WE bestowed favours on Moses and Aaron

walaqad manannā ʿalā mūsā wahārūn

وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝١١٥

And WE saved them both and their people from the great distress

wanajjaynāhumā waqawmahumā mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm

وَنَصَرۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝١١٦

And WE helped them, and it was they who were victorious

wanaṣarnāhum fakānū humu l-ghālibīn

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِینَ ۝١١٧

And WE gave them the Book that made everything clear

waātaynāhumā l-kitāba l-mus'tabīn

وَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَ ٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمَ ۝١١٨

And WE guided them to the right path

wahadaynāhumā l-ṣirāṭa l-mus'taqīm

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمَا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١١٩

And WE left for them a good name among the succeeding generations.

wataraknā ʿalayhimā fī l-ākhirīn

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١٢٠

Peace be on Moses and Aaron

salāmun ʿalā mūsā wahārūn

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٢١

Thus, indeed, do WE reward those who do good

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢٢

Surely, they were both among Our believing servants

innahumā min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ إِلۡیَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

And, assuredly, Elias also was one of the Messengers

wa-inna il'yāsa lamina l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦۤ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

When he said to his people, `Will you not be God-fearing

idh qāla liqawmihi alā tattaqūn

أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلࣰا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقِینَ ۝١٢٥

`Do you call on Ba`l and forsake the Best of creators

atadʿūna baʿlan watadharūna aḥsana l-khāliqīn

ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٢٦

ALLAH, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of old?

al-laha rabbakum warabba ābāikumu l-awalīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٢٧

But they rejected him, and they will, surely, be brought before God to render an account of their deeds

fakadhabūhu fa-innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٢٨

Except the chosen servants of ALLAH

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٢٩

And WE left for him a good name among the later generations.

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِلۡ یَاسِینَ ۝١٣٠

Peace be on Elias and his people

salāmun ʿalā il yāsīn

إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٣١

Thus, indeed, do WE reward those who do good

innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٢

Surely, he was one of Our believing servants

innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ لُوطࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٣

And assuredly, Lot, too, was one of the Messengers

wa-inna lūṭan lamina l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ نَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٣٤

When WE delivered him and all his family

idh najjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٣٥

Except an old women who was among those who stayed behind

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٣٦

Then WE utterly destroyed the others

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَیۡهِم مُّصۡبِحِینَ ۝١٣٧

And, surely, you pass by them in the morning

wa-innakum latamurrūna ʿalayhim muṣ'biḥīn

5 Jonah and the Prophet's Triumph

وَبِٱلَّیۡلِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٣٨

And by night, Will you not understand

wabi-al-layli afalā taʿqilūn

وَإِنَّ یُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٩

And, surely, Jonah also was one of the Messengers

wa-inna yūnusa lamina l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١٤٠

When he fled to the laden ship

idh abaqa ilā l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِینَ ۝١٤١

And he cast lots with the crew of the ship and was of the losers

fasāhama fakāna mina l-mud'ḥaḍīn

فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ ٱلۡحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِیمࣱ ۝١٤٢

And the fish swallowed him while he was reproaching himself

fal-taqamahu l-ḥūtu wahuwa mulīmu

فَلَوۡلَاۤ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِینَ ۝١٤٣

And had he not been of those who glorify God

falawlā annahu kāna mina l-musabiḥīn

لَلَبِثَ فِی بَطۡنِهِۦۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٤٤

He would, surely, have tarried in its belly till the Day of Resurrection

lalabitha fī baṭnihi ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn

۞ فَنَبَذۡنَـٰهُ بِٱلۡعَرَاۤءِ وَهُوَ سَقِیمࣱ ۝١٤٥

Then WE cast him on a bare tract of land, and he was sick

fanabadhnāhu bil-ʿarāi wahuwa saqīmu

وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ شَجَرَةࣰ مِّن یَقۡطِینࣲ ۝١٤٦

And WE caused a gourd plant to grow over him

wa-anbatnā ʿalayhi shajaratan min yaqṭīni

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلۡفٍ أَوۡ یَزِیدُونَ ۝١٤٧

And WE sent him as a Messenger to a hundred thousand people or more

wa-arsalnāhu ilā mi-ati alfin aw yazīdūn

فَءَامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٤٨

And they all believed; so WE permitted them to enjoy life for a long while

faāmanū famattaʿnāhum ilā ḥīni

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ ۝١٤٩

Now ask them whether thy Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons

fa-is'taftihim alirabbika l-banātu walahumu l-banūn

أَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ إِنَـٰثࣰا وَهُمۡ شَـٰهِدُونَ ۝١٥٠

Did WE create the angels females while they were witnesses

am khalaqnā l-malāikata ināthan wahum shāhidūn

أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُم مِّنۡ إِفۡكِهِمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٥١

Now, surely, it is of their fabrications that they say

alā innahum min if'kihim layaqūlūn

وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٥٢

`ALLAH has begotten children;' and they are certainly liars

walada l-lahu wa-innahum lakādhibūn

أَصۡطَفَى ٱلۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلۡبَنِینَ ۝١٥٣

Has HE chosen daughters in preference to sons

aṣṭafā l-banāti ʿalā l-banīn

مَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝١٥٤

What is the matter with you? How judge ye

mā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn

أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝١٥٥

Will you not take heed

afalā tadhakkarūn

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٥٦

Or, have you a clear authority

am lakum sul'ṭānun mubīnu

فَأۡتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٧

Then produce your book, if you are truthful

fatū bikitābikum in kuntum ṣādiqīn

وَجَعَلُوا۟ بَیۡنَهُۥ وَبَیۡنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبࣰاۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ ٱلۡجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٥٨

And they assert a kinship between HIM and the jinn while the jinn themselves know well that they will be brought before ALLAH for judgment

wajaʿalū baynahu wabayna l-jinati nasaban walaqad ʿalimati l-jinatu innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn

سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٥٩

Holy is ALLAH and free from what they attribute to HIM

sub'ḥāna l-lahi ʿammā yaṣifūn

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٠

But the chosen servants of ALLAH do not attribute anything derogatory to HIM

illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

فَإِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝١٦١

Verily, you and what you worship

fa-innakum wamā taʿbudūn

مَاۤ أَنتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ بِفَـٰتِنِینَ ۝١٦٢

None of you can mislead anyone against HIM

mā antum ʿalayhi bifātinīn

إِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝١٦٣

Except only him who shall burn in Hell

illā man huwa ṣāli l-jaḥīm

وَمَا مِنَّاۤ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝١٦٤

They say, `There is not one of us but has known a station

wamā minnā illā lahu maqāmun maʿlūmu

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلصَّاۤفُّونَ ۝١٦٥

`And, verily, we are those who stand ranged in rows

wa-innā lanaḥnu l-ṣāfūn

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ ۝١٦٦

And we, verily, are those who glorify ALLAH.

wa-innā lanaḥnu l-musabiḥūn

وَإِن كَانُوا۟ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٦٧

And, surely, the Meccan disbelievers used to say

wa-in kānū layaqūlūn

لَوۡ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكۡرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٦٨

`If we had with us a Reminder like that of the people of old

law anna ʿindanā dhik'ran mina l-awalīn

لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٩

`We would, surely, have been ALLAH's chosen servants.

lakunnā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn

فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٧٠

Yet when it has come to them they disbelieve therein, but they will soon come to know

fakafarū bihi fasawfa yaʿlamūn

وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧١

And, surely, Our word has gone forth to Our servants, the Messengers

walaqad sabaqat kalimatunā liʿibādinā l-mur'salīn

إِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ ۝١٧٢

That it is, certainly, they who will be helped

innahum lahumu l-manṣūrūn

وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝١٧٣

And that it is Our host that will, certainly, be victorious

wa-inna jundanā lahumu l-ghālibūn

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٤

So turn thou away from them for a while

fatawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni

وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٥

And watch them, for they will soon see their own end

wa-abṣir'hum fasawfa yub'ṣirūn

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝١٧٦

Is it then Our punishment that they seek to hasten on

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَاۤءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٧

But when it descends into their courtyard, it shall be an evil morning for those who were warned

fa-idhā nazala bisāḥatihim fasāa ṣabāḥu l-mundharīn

وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٨

So turn thou away from them for a while

watawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni

وَأَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٩

And watch, for they will soon see their own end

wa-abṣir fasawfa yub'ṣirūn

سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٨٠

Holy is thy Lord, the Lord of Power, far above that which they assert

sub'ḥāna rabbika rabbi l-ʿizati ʿammā yaṣifūn

وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٨١

And peace is ever upon the Messengers

wasalāmun ʿalā l-mur'salīn

وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٢

And all praise belongs to ALLAH, the Lord of the worlds

wal-ḥamdu lillahi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
