37:1 ›
وَٱلصَّـٰۤفَّـٰتِ صَفࣰّا ۝١

By the (angels) ranged in ranks
wal-ṣāfāti ṣaffa
37:2 ›
فَٱلزَّ ٰجِرَ ٰتِ زَجۡرࣰا ۝٢

and the drivers driving
fal-zājirāti zajra
37:3 ›
فَٱلتَّـٰلِیَـٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۝٣

and the reciters of the reminder
fal-tāliyāti dhik'ra
37:4 ›
إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمۡ لَوَ ٰحِدࣱ ۝٤

'Verily, your God is one
inna ilāhakum lawāḥidu
37:5 ›
رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَـٰرِقِ ۝٥

the Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between the two, and the Lord of the sunrises!
rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā warabbu l-mashāriq
37:6 ›
إِنَّا زَیَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا بِزِینَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ ۝٦

Verily, we have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars
innā zayyannā l-samāa l-dun'yā bizīnatin l-kawākib
37:7 ›
وَحِفۡظࣰا مِّن كُلِّ شَیۡطَـٰنࣲ مَّارِدࣲ ۝٧

and to preserve it from every rebellious devil
waḥif'ẓan min kulli shayṭānin māridi
37:8 ›
لَّا یَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَیُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبࣲ ۝٨

that they may not listen to the exalted chiefs; for they are hurled at from every side
lā yassammaʿūna ilā l-mala-i l-aʿlā wayuq'dhafūna min kulli jānibi
37:9 ›
دُحُورࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ وَاصِبٌ ۝٩

driven off, and for them is lasting woe
duḥūran walahum ʿadhābun wāṣibu
37:10 ›
إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ ثَاقِبࣱ ۝١٠

save such as snatches off a word, and there follows him a darting flame
illā man khaṭifa l-khaṭfata fa-atbaʿahu shihābun thāqibu
37:11 ›
فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاۤۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُم مِّن طِینࣲ لَّازِبِۭ ۝١١

Ask them whether they are stronger by nature or (the angels) whom we have created? We have created them of sticky clay
fa-is'taftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqnā innā khalaqnāhum min ṭīnin lāzibi
37:12 ›
بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَیَسۡخَرُونَ ۝١٢

Nay, thou dost wonder and they jest
bal ʿajib'ta wayaskharūn
37:13 ›
وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا یَذۡكُرُونَ ۝١٣

and when they are reminded they will not remember
wa-idhā dhukkirū lā yadhkurūn
37:14 ›
وَإِذَا رَأَوۡا۟ ءَایَةࣰ یَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ ۝١٤

and when they see a sign they make a jest thereof
wa-idhā ra-aw āyatan yastaskhirūn
37:15 ›
وَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝١٥

and say, 'This is naught but obvious sorcery
waqālū in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnu
37:16 ›
أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝١٦

What! when we are dead, and have become earth and bones, shall we then be raised
a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn
37:17 ›
أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝١٧

what! and our fathers of yore?
awaābāunā l-awalūn
37:18 ›
قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَ ٰخِرُونَ ۝١٨

Say, 'Yes, and ye shall shrink up
qul naʿam wa-antum dākhirūn
37:19 ›
فَإِنَّمَا هِیَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَ ٰحِدَةࣱ فَإِذَا هُمۡ یَنظُرُونَ ۝١٩

and it shall only be one scare, and, behold, they shall look on
fa-innamā hiya zajratun wāḥidatun fa-idhā hum yanẓurūn
37:20 ›
وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰوَیۡلَنَا هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٢٠

and they shall say, 'O, woe is us! this is the day of judgment
waqālū yāwaylanā hādhā yawmu l-dīn
37:21 ›
هَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِی كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٢١

this is the day of decision, which ye did call a lie!
hādhā yawmu l-faṣli alladhī kuntum bihi tukadhibūn
2 The Judgment
37:22 ›
۞ ٱحۡشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزۡوَ ٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٢

Gather ye together, ye who were unjust, with their mates and what they used to serv
uḥ'shurū alladhīna ẓalamū wa-azwājahum wamā kānū yaʿbudūn
37:23 ›
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٢٣

beside God, and guide them to the way of hell
min dūni l-lahi fa-ih'dūhum ilā ṣirāṭi l-jaḥīm
37:24 ›
وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡءُولُونَ ۝٢٤

and stop them; verily, they shall be questioned
waqifūhum innahum masūlūn
37:25 ›
مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ ۝٢٥

'Why do ye not help each other?
mā lakum lā tanāṣarūn
37:26 ›
بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ ۝٢٦

nay, on that day they shall resign themselves
bal humu l-yawma mus'taslimūn
37:27 ›
وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٢٧

and some shall draw near to others, to question each other
wa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn
37:28 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٨

and they shall say, 'Verily, ye came to us from the right.
qālū innakum kuntum tatūnanā ʿani l-yamīn
37:29 ›
قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢٩
Edward Henry Palmer
They shall say, 'Nay, ye were not believers
qālū bal lam takūnū mu'minīn
37:30 ›
وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَیۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَـٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا طَـٰغِینَ ۝٣٠

nor had we any authority over you; nay, ye were an outrageous people
wamā kāna lanā ʿalaykum min sul'ṭānin bal kuntum qawman ṭāghīn
37:31 ›
فَحَقَّ عَلَیۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَاۤۖ إِنَّا لَذَاۤىِٕقُونَ ۝٣١

And the sentence of our Lord shall be due for us; verily, we shall surely taste thereof
faḥaqqa ʿalaynā qawlu rabbinā innā ladhāiqūn
37:32 ›
فَأَغۡوَیۡنَـٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِینَ ۝٣٢

we did seduce you - verily, we were erring too!
fa-aghwaynākum innā kunnā ghāwīn
37:33 ›
فَإِنَّهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٣

therefore, verily, on that day they shall share the torment
fa-innahum yawma-idhin fī l-ʿadhābi mush'tarikūn
37:34 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣٤

thus it is that we will do with the sinners
innā kadhālika nafʿalu bil-muj'rimīn
37:35 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۤا۟ إِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ یَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٣٥

Verily, when it is said to them, 'There is no god but God,' they get too big with pride
innahum kānū idhā qīla lahum lā ilāha illā l-lahu yastakbirūn
37:36 ›
وَیَقُولُونَ أَىِٕنَّا لَتَارِكُوۤا۟ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرࣲ مَّجۡنُونِۭ ۝٣٦

and say, 'What! shall we leave our gods for an infatuated poet?
wayaqūlūna a-innā latārikū ālihatinā lishāʿirin majnūni
37:37 ›
بَلۡ جَاۤءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٣٧

Nay, he came with the truth, and verified the apostles
bal jāa bil-ḥaqi waṣaddaqa l-mur'salīn
37:38 ›
إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَاۤىِٕقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِیمِ ۝٣٨

verily, ye are going to taste of grievous woe
innakum ladhāiqū l-ʿadhābi l-alīm
37:39 ›
وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٩

nor shall ye be rewarded save for that which ye have done
wamā tuj'zawna illā mā kuntum taʿmalūn
37:40 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٤٠

Except God's sincere servants
illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
37:41 ›
أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤١

these shall have a stated provisio
ulāika lahum riz'qun maʿlūmu
37:42 ›
فَوَ ٰكِهُ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٤٢

of fruits, and they shall be honoure
fawākihu wahum muk'ramūn
37:43 ›
فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٤٣

in the gardens of pleasure
fī jannāti l-naʿīm
37:44 ›
عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝٤٤

upon couches facing each other
yuṭāfu ʿalayhim bikasin min maʿīni
37:45 ›
یُطَافُ عَلَیۡهِم بِكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینِۭ ۝٤٥

they shall be served all round with a cup from a spring
Yutafu AAalayhim bika/sin min maAAeenin
37:46 ›
بَیۡضَاۤءَ لَذَّةࣲ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِینَ ۝٤٦

white and delicious to those who drink
bayḍāa ladhatin lilshāribīn
37:47 ›
لَا فِیهَا غَوۡلࣱ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا یُنزَفُونَ ۝٤٧

wherein is no insidious spirit, nor shall they be drunk therewith
lā fīhā ghawlun walā hum ʿanhā yunzafūn
37:48 ›
وَعِندَهُمۡ قَـٰصِرَ ٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِینࣱ ۝٤٨

and with them damsels, restraining their looks, large eyed
waʿindahum qāṣirātu l-ṭarfi ʿīnu
37:49 ›
كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَیۡضࣱ مَّكۡنُونࣱ ۝٤٩

as though they were a sheltered egg
ka-annahunna bayḍun maknūnu
37:50 ›
فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٥٠

and some shall come forward to ask others
fa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūn
37:51 ›
قَالَ قَاۤىِٕلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّی كَانَ لِی قَرِینࣱ ۝٥١

and a speaker amongst them shall say, 'Verily, I had a mate
qāla qāilun min'hum innī kāna lī qarīnu
37:52 ›
یَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِینَ ۝٥٢
Edward Henry Palmer
who used to say, "Art thou verily of those who credit
yaqūlu a-innaka lamina l-muṣadiqīn
37:53 ›
أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِینُونَ ۝٥٣

What! when we are dead, and have become earth and bones, shall we be surely judged?"
a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamadīnūn
37:54 ›
قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ ۝٥٤

He will say, 'Are ye looking down?
qāla hal antum muṭṭaliʿūn
37:55 ›
فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِی سَوَاۤءِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٥٥

and he shall look down and see him in the midst of hell
fa-iṭṭalaʿa faraāhu fī sawāi l-jaḥīm
37:56 ›
قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِینِ ۝٥٦

He shall say, 'By God, thou didst nearly ruin me
qāla tal-lahi in kidtta latur'dīn
37:57 ›
وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّی لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِینَ ۝٥٧

And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I should have been among the arraigned.'
walawlā niʿ'matu rabbī lakuntu mina l-muḥ'ḍarīn
37:58 ›
أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَیِّتِینَ ۝٥٨

'What! shall we not die save our first death
afamā naḥnu bimayyitīn
37:59 ›
إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٥٩

and shall we not be tormented?
illā mawtatanā l-ūlā wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn
37:60 ›
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِیمُ ۝٦٠

Verily, this is mighty bliss
inna hādhā lahuwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīm
37:61 ›
لِمِثۡلِ هَـٰذَا فَلۡیَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلُونَ ۝٦١

for the like of this then let the workers work.
limith'li hādhā falyaʿmali l-ʿāmilūn
37:62 ›
أَذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ۝٦٢

Is that better as an entertainment, or the tree of Ez Zaqqum
adhālika khayrun nuzulan am shajaratu l-zaqūm
37:63 ›
إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٦٣

Verily, we have made it a trial to the unjust
innā jaʿalnāhā fit'natan lilẓẓālimīn
37:64 ›
إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةࣱ تَخۡرُجُ فِیۤ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٤

Verily, it is a tree that comes forth from the bottom of hell
innahā shajaratun takhruju fī aṣli l-jaḥīm
37:65 ›
طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینِ ۝٦٥

its spathe is as it were the heads of devils
ṭalʿuhā ka-annahu ruūsu l-shayāṭīn
37:66 ›
فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٦٦

verily, they shall eat therefrom, and fill their bellies therefrom
fa-innahum laākilūna min'hā famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn
37:67 ›
ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَیۡهَا لَشَوۡبࣰا مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٦٧

Then shall they have upon it a mixture of boiling water
thumma inna lahum ʿalayhā lashawban min ḥamīmi
37:68 ›
ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٦٨

then, verily, their return shall be to hell
thumma inna marjiʿahum la-ilā l-jaḥīm
37:69 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡا۟ ءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ ضَاۤلِّینَ ۝٦٩

Verily, they found their fathers erring
innahum alfaw ābāahum ḍāllīn
37:70 ›
فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمۡ یُهۡرَعُونَ ۝٧٠

and they hurried on in their tracks
fahum ʿalā āthārihim yuh'raʿūn
37:71 ›
وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٧١
Edward Henry Palmer
but there had erred before them most of those of yore
walaqad ḍalla qablahum aktharu l-awalīn
37:72 ›
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِیهِم مُّنذِرِینَ ۝٧٢

and we had sent warners amongst them
walaqad arsalnā fīhim mundhirīn
37:73 ›
فَٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝٧٣

Behold, then, what was the end of those who were warned
fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mundharīn
37:74 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٧٤

save God's sincere servants
illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
3 Noah and Abraham
37:75 ›
وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحࣱ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِیبُونَ ۝٧٥

Noah did call upon us, and a gracious answer did we give
walaqad nādānā nūḥun falaniʿ'ma l-mujībūn
37:76 ›
وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٦

and we saved him and his people from a mighty trouble
wanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm
37:77 ›
وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّیَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝٧٧

and we made his seed to be the survivors
wajaʿalnā dhurriyyatahu humu l-bāqīn
37:78 ›
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٧٨

and we left for him amongst posterit
wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn
37:79 ›
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحࣲ فِی ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٩

'peace upon Noah in the worlds
salāmun ʿalā nūḥin fī l-ʿālamīn
37:80 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٨٠

verily, thus do we reward those who do well
innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:81 ›
إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨١

verily, he was of our believing servants.
innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn
37:82 ›
ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٨٢

Then we drowned the others
thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn
37:83 ›
۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِیعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٨٣

And, verily, of his sect was Abraham
wa-inna min shīʿatihi la-ib'rāhīm
37:84 ›
إِذۡ جَاۤءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمٍ ۝٨٤

37:85 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٨٥

when he said to his father and his people, 'What is it that ye serve
idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mādhā taʿbudūn
37:86 ›
أَىِٕفۡكًا ءَالِهَةࣰ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِیدُونَ ۝٨٦

with a lie do ye desire gods beside God
a-if'kan ālihatan dūna l-lahi turīdūn
37:87 ›
فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٧

What then is your thought respecting the Lord of the worlds?
famā ẓannukum birabbi l-ʿālamīn
37:88 ›
فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةࣰ فِی ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٨٨

And he looked a look at the star
fanaẓara naẓratan fī l-nujūm
37:89 ›
فَقَالَ إِنِّی سَقِیمࣱ ۝٨٩

and said, 'Verily, I am sick!
faqāla innī saqīmu
37:90 ›
فَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِینَ ۝٩٠

and they turned their backs upon him fleeing
fatawallaw ʿanhu mud'birīn
37:91 ›
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰۤ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٩١

And he went aside unto their gods and said, 'Will ye not eat
farāgha ilā ālihatihim faqāla alā takulūn
37:92 ›
مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ ۝٩٢

What ails you that ye will not speak?
mā lakum lā tanṭiqūn
37:93 ›
فَرَاغَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٣

And he went aside to them smiting with the right hand
farāgha ʿalayhim ḍarban bil-yamīn
37:94 ›
فَأَقۡبَلُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِ یَزِفُّونَ ۝٩٤

And they rushed towards him
fa-aqbalū ilayhi yaziffūn
37:95 ›
قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ ۝٩٥

Said he, 'Do ye serve what ye hew out
qāla ataʿbudūna mā tanḥitūn
37:96 ›
وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٦

when God has created you, and what ye make?
wal-lahu khalaqakum wamā taʿmalūn
37:97 ›
قَالُوا۟ ٱبۡنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنۡیَـٰنࣰا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِی ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝٩٧

Said they, 'Build for him a pyre, and throw him into the flaming hell!
qālū ib'nū lahu bun'yānan fa-alqūhu fī l-jaḥīm
37:98 ›
فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَیۡدࣰا فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِینَ ۝٩٨

They desired to plot against him, but we made them inferior
fa-arādū bihi kaydan fajaʿalnāhumu l-asfalīn
37:99 ›
وَقَالَ إِنِّی ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٩٩

Said he, 'Verily, I am going to my Lord, He will guide me
waqāla innī dhāhibun ilā rabbī sayahdīn
37:100 ›
رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١٠٠

My Lord! grant me (a son), one of the righteous;
rabbi hab lī mina l-ṣāliḥīn
37:101 ›
فَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ حَلِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

and we gave him glad tidings of a clement boy
fabasharnāhu bighulāmin ḥalīmi
37:102 ›
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعۡیَ قَالَ یَـٰبُنَیَّ إِنِّیۤ أَرَىٰ فِی ٱلۡمَنَامِ أَنِّیۤ أَذۡبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرَىٰۚ قَالَ یَـٰۤأَبَتِ ٱفۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُۖ سَتَجِدُنِیۤ إِن شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٠٢

And when he reached the age to work with him, he said, 'O my boy! verily, I have seen in a dream that I should sacrifice thee, look then what thou seest right.' Said he, 'O my sire! do what thou art bidden; thou wilt find me, if it please God, one of the patient!
falammā balagha maʿahu l-saʿya qāla yābunayya innī arā fī l-manāmi annī adhbaḥuka fa-unẓur mādhā tarā qāla yāabati if'ʿal mā tu'maru satajidunī in shāa l-lahu mina l-ṣābirīn
37:103 ›
فَلَمَّاۤ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِینِ ۝١٠٣

And when they were resigned, and Abraham had thrown him down upon his forehead
falammā aslamā watallahu lil'jabīn
37:104 ›
وَنَـٰدَیۡنَـٰهُ أَن یَـٰۤإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ ۝١٠٤

we called to him, 'O Abraham
wanādaynāhu an yāib'rāhīm
37:105 ›
قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡیَاۤۚ إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٠٥

thou hast verified the vision; verily, thus do we reward those who do well
qad ṣaddaqta l-ru'yā innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:106 ›
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡبَلَـٰۤؤُا۟ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٠٦

This is surely an obvious trial.
inna hādhā lahuwa l-balāu l-mubīn
37:107 ›
وَفَدَیۡنَـٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٠٧

And we ransomed him with a mighty victim
wafadaynāhu bidhib'ḥin ʿaẓīmi
37:108 ›
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٠٨

and we left for him amongst posterity
wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn
37:109 ›
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝١٠٩

'Peace upon Abraham
salāmun ʿalā ib'rāhīm
37:110 ›
كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١١٠

thus do we reward those who do well
kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:111 ›
إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١١

verily, he was of our servants who believe!
innahu min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn
37:112 ›
وَبَشَّرۡنَـٰهُ بِإِسۡحَـٰقَ نَبِیࣰّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١١٢

And we gave him glad tidings of Isaac, a prophet among the righteous
wabasharnāhu bi-is'ḥāqa nabiyyan mina l-ṣāliḥīn
37:113 ›
وَبَـٰرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ وَعَلَىٰۤ إِسۡحَـٰقَۚ وَمِن ذُرِّیَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنࣱ وَظَالِمࣱ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ مُبِینࣱ ۝١١٣

and we blessed him and Isaac;- of their seed is one who does well, and one who obviously wrongs himself
wabāraknā ʿalayhi waʿalā is'ḥāqa wamin dhurriyyatihimā muḥ'sinun waẓālimun linafsihi mubīnu
4 Moses, Aaron, Elias and Lot
37:114 ›
وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١١٤

And we were gracious unto Moses and Aaron
walaqad manannā ʿalā mūsā wahārūn
37:115 ›
وَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝١١٥

We saved them and their people from mighty trouble
wanajjaynāhumā waqawmahumā mina l-karbi l-ʿaẓīm
37:116 ›
وَنَصَرۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝١١٦

and we helped them and they had the upper hand
wanaṣarnāhum fakānū humu l-ghālibīn
37:117 ›
وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِینَ ۝١١٧

and we gave them both the perspicuous Book
waātaynāhumā l-kitāba l-mus'tabīn
37:118 ›
وَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَ ٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمَ ۝١١٨

and we guided them to the right way
wahadaynāhumā l-ṣirāṭa l-mus'taqīm
37:119 ›
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمَا فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١١٩

and we left for them amongst posterity
wataraknā ʿalayhimā fī l-ākhirīn
37:120 ›
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝١٢٠

'Peace upon Moses and Aaron
salāmun ʿalā mūsā wahārūn
37:121 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٢١

verily, thus do we reward those who do well
innā kadhālika najzī l-muḥ'sinīn
37:122 ›
إِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢٢

innahumā min ʿibādinā l-mu'minīn
37:123 ›
وَإِنَّ إِلۡیَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

And verily Elyas was of the apostles
wa-inna il'yāsa lamina l-mur'salīn
37:124 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦۤ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

when he said to his people, 'Will ye not fear
idh qāla liqawmihi alā tattaqūn
37:125 ›
أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلࣰا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقِینَ ۝١٢٥

do ye call upon Baal and leave the best of Creators
atadʿūna baʿlan watadharūna aḥsana l-khāliqīn
37:126 ›
ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٢٦

God your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore?
al-laha rabbakum warabba ābāikumu l-awalīn
37:127 ›
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٢٧

But they called him liar; verily, they shall surely be arraigned
fakadhabūhu fa-innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn
37:128 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٢٨

save God's sincere servants
illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
37:129 ›
وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٢٩

wataraknā ʿalayhi fī l-ākhirīn
37:130 ›
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰۤ إِلۡ یَاسِینَ ۝١٣٠

37:131 ›
إِنَّا كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَجۡزِی ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٣١

37:132 ›

وَإِنَّ لُوطࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٣

And, verily, Lot was surely among the apostles
wa-inna lūṭan lamina l-mur'salīn
37:134 ›
إِذۡ نَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٣٤

when we saved him and his people altogether
idh najjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn
37:135 ›
إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٣٥

except an old woman amongst those who lingered
illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn
37:136 ›
ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٣٦

then we destroyed the others
thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn
37:137 ›
وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَیۡهِم مُّصۡبِحِینَ ۝١٣٧

verily, ye pass by them in the mornin
wa-innakum latamurrūna ʿalayhim muṣ'biḥīn
5 Jonah and the Prophet's Triumph
37:138 ›
وَبِٱلَّیۡلِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٣٨

and at night; have ye then no sense
wabi-al-layli afalā taʿqilūn
37:139 ›
وَإِنَّ یُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٣٩

wa-inna yūnusa lamina l-mur'salīn
37:140 ›
إِذۡ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١٤٠

when he ran away into the laden ship
idh abaqa ilā l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn
37:141 ›
فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِینَ ۝١٤١

and he cast lots and was of those who lost
fasāhama fakāna mina l-mud'ḥaḍīn
37:142 ›
فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ ٱلۡحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِیمࣱ ۝١٤٢

and a fish swallowed him, for he was to be blamed
fal-taqamahu l-ḥūtu wahuwa mulīmu
37:143 ›
فَلَوۡلَاۤ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِینَ ۝١٤٣

and had it not been that he was of those who celebrated God's praise
falawlā annahu kāna mina l-musabiḥīn
37:144 ›
لَلَبِثَ فِی بَطۡنِهِۦۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٤٤

he would surely have tarried in the belly thereof to the day when men shall be raised
lalabitha fī baṭnihi ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn
37:145 ›
۞ فَنَبَذۡنَـٰهُ بِٱلۡعَرَاۤءِ وَهُوَ سَقِیمࣱ ۝١٤٥

But we cast him on to the barren shore; and he was sick
fanabadhnāhu bil-ʿarāi wahuwa saqīmu
37:146 ›
وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ شَجَرَةࣰ مِّن یَقۡطِینࣲ ۝١٤٦

and we made to grow over him a gourd tree
wa-anbatnā ʿalayhi shajaratan min yaqṭīni
37:147 ›
وَأَرۡسَلۡنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلۡفٍ أَوۡ یَزِیدُونَ ۝١٤٧

and we sent him to a hundred thousand or more
wa-arsalnāhu ilā mi-ati alfin aw yazīdūn
37:148 ›
فَءَامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٤٨

and they believed; and we gave them enjoyment for a season
faāmanū famattaʿnāhum ilā ḥīni
37:149 ›
فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ ۝١٤٩

Ask them, 'Has thy Lord daughters while they have sons
fa-is'taftihim alirabbika l-banātu walahumu l-banūn
37:150 ›
أَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ إِنَـٰثࣰا وَهُمۡ شَـٰهِدُونَ ۝١٥٠

or have we created the angels females while they were witnesses?
am khalaqnā l-malāikata ināthan wahum shāhidūn
37:151 ›
أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُم مِّنۡ إِفۡكِهِمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٥١

is it not of their lie that they say
alā innahum min if'kihim layaqūlūn
37:152 ›
وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٥٢

'God has begotten?' verily, they are liars
walada l-lahu wa-innahum lakādhibūn
37:153 ›
أَصۡطَفَى ٱلۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلۡبَنِینَ ۝١٥٣

Has he preferred daughters to sons
aṣṭafā l-banāti ʿalā l-banīn
37:154 ›
مَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ ۝١٥٤

what ails you? how ye judge
mā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn
37:155 ›
أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝١٥٥

will ye not be mindful
afalā tadhakkarūn
37:156 ›
أَمۡ لَكُمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٥٦

or have ye obvious authority
am lakum sul'ṭānun mubīnu
37:157 ›
فَأۡتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٧

then bring your Book if ye do speak the truth
fatū bikitābikum in kuntum ṣādiqīn
37:158 ›
وَجَعَلُوا۟ بَیۡنَهُۥ وَبَیۡنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبࣰاۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ ٱلۡجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٥٨

And they made him to be related to the ginns, while the ginns know that they shall be arraigned
wajaʿalū baynahu wabayna l-jinati nasaban walaqad ʿalimati l-jinatu innahum lamuḥ'ḍarūn
37:159 ›
سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا یَصِفُونَ ۝١٥٩

celebrated be God's praises from what they attribute!
sub'ḥāna l-lahi ʿammā yaṣifūn
37:160 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٠

save God's sincere servants
illā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
37:161 ›
فَإِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝١٦١

'Verily, ye and what ye worshi
fa-innakum wamā taʿbudūn
37:162 ›
مَاۤ أَنتُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ بِفَـٰتِنِینَ ۝١٦٢

shall not try any one concerning him
mā antum ʿalayhi bifātinīn
37:163 ›
إِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلۡجَحِیمِ ۝١٦٣

save him who shall broil in hell
illā man huwa ṣāli l-jaḥīm
37:164 ›
وَمَا مِنَّاۤ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝١٦٤

there is none amongst us but has his appointed place, and
wamā minnā illā lahu maqāmun maʿlūmu
37:165 ›
وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلصَّاۤفُّونَ ۝١٦٥

verily, we are ranged, and
wa-innā lanaḥnu l-ṣāfūn
37:166 ›
وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ ۝١٦٦

verily, we celebrate His praises
wa-innā lanaḥnu l-musabiḥūn
37:167 ›
وَإِن كَانُوا۟ لَیَقُولُونَ ۝١٦٧

And yet they say
wa-in kānū layaqūlūn
37:168 ›
لَوۡ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكۡرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٦٨

'Had we a reminder from those of yor
law anna ʿindanā dhik'ran mina l-awalīn
37:169 ›
لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝١٦٩

we should surely have been of God's sincere servants.
lakunnā ʿibāda l-lahi l-mukh'laṣīn
37:170 ›
فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٧٠

وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧١

إِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ ۝١٧٢

innahum lahumu l-manṣūrūn
37:173 ›
وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝١٧٣

wa-inna jundanā lahumu l-ghālibūn
37:174 ›
فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٤

Then turn thou thy back upon them for a time
fatawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni
37:175 ›
وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٥

and look upon them, for soon they too shall look
wa-abṣir'hum fasawfa yub'ṣirūn
37:176 ›
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝١٧٦

Would they hasten on our torment
afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn
37:177 ›
فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَاۤءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٧

but when it descends in their court, ill will the morning be of those who have been warned
fa-idhā nazala bisāḥatihim fasāa ṣabāḥu l-mundharīn
37:178 ›
وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝١٧٨

watawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīni
37:179 ›
وَأَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ یُبۡصِرُونَ ۝١٧٩

Celebrated be the praises of thy Lord, the Lord of glory, above what they attribute
sub'ḥāna rabbika rabbi l-ʿizati ʿammā yaṣifūn
37:181 ›
وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٨١

and peace be upon the apostle
wasalāmun ʿalā l-mur'salīn
37:182 ›
وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٢
