1 The Qur'an is guarded
15:1 ›
۞ الۤرۚ تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَقُرۡءَانࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١
Al-Muntakhab
A. (Alef), L. (lam) R. (Raa), the Surah opens with these letters introductory from the Arabic Alphabet to draw attention to the miracle of the Quran which though written in the people's tongue, cannot be emulated. These are divine prosy discoursed verses of the Book and a perspicuous Quran which stands manifest of enlightenment and imparting knowledge, wisdom and spiritual light
alif-lam-ra til'ka āyātu l-kitābi waqur'ānin mubīni
15:2 ›
رُّبَمَا یَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ مُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٢
Al-Muntakhab
Perhaps the Day shall come sooner than expected when those who denied Allah and disobeyed His statutes wish they had conformed to Islam as ordained by Him
rubamā yawaddu alladhīna kafarū law kānū mus'limīn
15:3 ›
ذَرۡهُمۡ یَأۡكُلُوا۟ وَیَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَیُلۡهِهِمُ ٱلۡأَمَلُۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣
Al-Muntakhab
Let them feast their senses, their thoughts and their feelings with infidelity and disobedience and experience with delight the pleasure they draw from such a disposition and be fooled by their hopes which they shall come to know and. realize that they are doomed to disappointmen
dharhum yakulū wayatamattaʿū wayul'hihimu l-amalu fasawfa yaʿlamūn
15:4 ›
وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤
Al-Muntakhab
We never destroyed a city, a people or a nation arbitrarily but according to a justified act. There and then their end is being predetermined and unalterably decreed
wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā walahā kitābun maʿlūmu
15:5 ›
مَّا تَسۡبِقُ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا یَسۡتَءۡخِرُونَ ۝٥
Al-Muntakhab
Nor can a people or a nation hasten their own end of ultimate state earlier than the predetermined due date nor can they delay it either
mā tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahā wamā yastakhirūn
15:6 ›
وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِی نُزِّلَ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلذِّكۡرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٦
Al-Muntakhab
Acting against their own best interests, they accuse the Messenger of falsehood; they mockingly say to him: "O you who claim to have received the divine message from heaven, you are indeed insane or demoniac"
waqālū yāayyuhā alladhī nuzzila ʿalayhi l-dhik'ru innaka lamajnūnu
15:7 ›
لَّوۡ مَا تَأۡتِینَا بِٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٧
Al-Muntakhab
"Why then", they add, "you do not bring down the angels to substantiate your claim if indeed you are declaring the truth!"
law mā tatīnā bil-malāikati in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn
15:8 ›
مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوۤا۟ إِذࣰا مُّنظَرِینَ ۝٨
Al-Muntakhab
They do not realize that We do not send down the angels to satisfy a curiosity. We only send them down for a valid reason and a just cause -to execute Allah's decrees-, and if We do send them down, the infidels shall be annihilated on the spot and no hope shall there be for respite
mā nunazzilu l-malāikata illā bil-ḥaqi wamā kānū idhan munẓarīn
15:9 ›
إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ ۝٩
Al-Muntakhab
We have sent down the Quran featuring the virtuous divine message of truth which shall never suffer eclipse nor shall its spiritual power ever be on the wane and its preservation against loss and corruption is indeed Our concern
innā naḥnu nazzalnā l-dhik'ra wa-innā lahu laḥāfiẓūn
15:10 ›
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِی شِیَعِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٠
Al-Muntakhab
We sent Messengers before you O Muhammad to the various sects of the distant past who were adherents of different systems of faith and worship
walaqad arsalnā min qablika fī shiyaʿi l-awalīn
15:11 ›
وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝١١
Al-Muntakhab
And never did a Messenger present himself to them but suffered malicious mockery and was laughed to scorn
wamā yatīhim min rasūlin illā kānū bihi yastahziūn
15:12 ›
كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَسۡلُكُهُۥ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٢
Al-Muntakhab
Thus do We picture him in the minds and hearts of the sinful who grow daily more and more wicked
kadhālika naslukuhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn
15:13 ›
لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَقَدۡ خَلَتۡ سُنَّةُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣
Al-Muntakhab
They just refuse to recognize him nor do they accept his message, notwithstanding that Allah's mode of action which has long been pursued in the past for each typical instance forming a particular case of a principle and a signal instance of punishment shall not alter
lā yu'minūna bihi waqad khalat sunnatu l-awalīn
15:14 ›
وَلَوۡ فَتَحۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم بَابࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِیهِ یَعۡرُجُونَ ۝١٤
Al-Muntakhab
And if We were to open to them a gate in heaven to provide a free passage so as to admit of their continued ascent into the realm
walaw fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban mina l-samāi faẓallū fīhi yaʿrujūn
15:15 ›
لَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتۡ أَبۡصَـٰرُنَا بَلۡ نَحۡنُ قَوۡمࣱ مَّسۡحُورُونَ ۝١٥
Al-Muntakhab
They would, thus still, say: "This is an eye trap. Our eyes have been confused with drink. In fact we have been bewitched"
laqālū innamā sukkirat abṣārunā bal naḥnu qawmun masḥūrūn
2 Evil will be destroyed
15:16 ›
وَلَقَدۡ جَعَلۡنَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ بُرُوجࣰا وَزَیَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝١٦
Al-Muntakhab
We established in the heavens mansions or divisions of the ecliptic to be occupied by the moon on successive days and a belt within which the apparent motions of the sun, the moon and principal planets take place - Signs of the Zodiac*- and We adorned them with qualities affording keen pleasure to the sense of sight
walaqad jaʿalnā fī l-samāi burūjan wazayyannāhā lilnnāẓirīn
15:17 ›
وَحَفِظۡنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَیۡطَـٰنࣲ رَّجِیمٍ ۝١٧
Al-Muntakhab
And We guarded them and their harmonious setting from disturbing Satanic forces and from those with characteristics befitting AL-Shaytan, the accursed
waḥafiẓ'nāhā min kulli shayṭānin rajīmi
15:18 ›
إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٨
Al-Muntakhab
He who peers inquisitively into the realm to steal whatever comes to his hearing of the secrets or future events is pursued by a flame of fire which does not miss
illā mani is'taraqa l-samʿa fa-atbaʿahu shihābun mubīnu
15:19 ›
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَدَدۡنَـٰهَا وَأَلۡقَیۡنَا فِیهَا رَوَ ٰسِیَ وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ مَّوۡزُونࣲ ۝١٩
Al-Muntakhab
And the earth did We spread out and stretch* and furnish with mountains placed in a certain setting, fixed as with an anchor, and therein did We produce and cause to grow a set of every kind whose seeming speaks of interdependence and the bearing of proportion
wal-arḍa madadnāhā wa-alqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli shayin mawzūni
15:20 ›
وَجَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَعَـٰیِشَ وَمَن لَّسۡتُمۡ لَهُۥ بِرَ ٰزِقِینَ ۝٢٠
Al-Muntakhab
And We provisioned you thereon with livelihood and We provisioned those creatures for which you are not responsible for furnishing with the necessities of life. -see introduction
wajaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha waman lastum lahu birāziqīn
15:21 ›
وَإِن مِّن شَیۡءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَاۤىِٕنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥۤ إِلَّا بِقَدَرࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٢١
Al-Muntakhab
No material or immaterial object, an article or a substance of any kind or anything with which anyone is concerned in action or in thought but We have infinite stores thereof, and what We release from all and each and send down to meet the needs is ascertained by due measure
wa-in min shayin illā ʿindanā khazāinuhu wamā nunazziluhu illā biqadarin maʿlūmi
15:22 ›
وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا ٱلرِّیَـٰحَ لَوَ ٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَسۡقَیۡنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَاۤ أَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ بِخَـٰزِنِینَ ۝٢٢
Al-Muntakhab
And We send the wind as an agent of fertilization in plants and it impregnates also the clouds and there issues the rain We send down from the floor of the vault of heaven and We afford you aliment therewith and quench your thirst. It is not under your dominion or control that you can lay it up in store
wa-arsalnā l-riyāḥa lawāqiḥa fa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan fa-asqaynākumūhu wamā antum lahu bikhāzinīn
15:23 ›
وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ نُحۡیِۦ وَنُمِیتُ وَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَ ٰرِثُونَ ۝٢٣
Al-Muntakhab
And it is We Who give life and inspirit the property of animate existence and occasion the moment of death and deprive of animate existence, and indeed it is We Who are in the end the inheritors of the heavens and the earth
wa-innā lanaḥnu nuḥ'yī wanumītu wanaḥnu l-wārithūn
15:24 ›
وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَقۡدِمِینَ مِنكُمۡ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَءۡخِرِینَ ۝٢٤
Al-Muntakhab
And We already know those of you whose turn to pay nature's debt comes first, and We already know those of you who would follow
walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'taqdimīna minkum walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'takhirīn
15:25 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ یَحۡشُرُهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِیمٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٥
Al-Muntakhab
And it is Allah, your Creator, O Muhammad Who shall throng them all at Judgement. He is indeed Hakimun (Wise) and, 'Alimun (Omniseient)
wa-inna rabbaka huwa yaḥshuruhum innahu ḥakīmun ʿalīmu
3 Devil's Opposition to Righteous
15:26 ›
وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٢٦
Al-Muntakhab
And We created man from dried clay, a product of dark modelling clay that has been polished
walaqad khalaqnā l-insāna min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni
15:27 ›
وَٱلۡجَاۤنَّ خَلَقۡنَـٰهُ مِن قَبۡلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ ۝٢٧
Al-Muntakhab
And the Jinn did We create earlier from a fiery blast of fervently hot wind
wal-jāna khalaqnāhu min qablu min nāri l-samūm
15:28 ›
وَإِذۡ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ إِنِّی خَـٰلِقُۢ بَشَرࣰا مِّن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٢٨
Al-Muntakhab
And for once did Allah say to the angels: I am on the point of creating a human from dried clay, the product of dark modelling clay that has been polished
wa-idh qāla rabbuka lil'malāikati innī khāliqun basharan min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni
15:29 ›
فَإِذَا سَوَّیۡتُهُۥ وَنَفَخۡتُ فِیهِ مِن رُّوحِی فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢٩
Al-Muntakhab
And when I have fashioned it and furnished it with a definite shape and imparted to it My spirit, then prostrate yourselves to him in reverence and admiration
fa-idhā sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī faqaʿū lahu sājidīn
15:30 ›
فَسَجَدَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ كُلُّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٣٠
Al-Muntakhab
There and then did all the angels cast themselves down prostrate
fasajada l-malāikatu kulluhum ajmaʿūn
15:31 ›
إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ أَبَىٰۤ أَن یَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٣١
Al-Muntakhab
Except Iblis (AL-Shaytan-to-be) who refused to join those who prostrated themselves in obeisance to Allah
illā ib'līsa abā an yakūna maʿa l-sājidīn
15:32 ›
قَالَ یَـٰۤإِبۡلِیسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٣٢
Al-Muntakhab
"What kept you, O Iblis", Allah Asked, "from joining those who cast themselves down in reverence and admiration!"
qāla yāib'līsu mā laka allā takūna maʿa l-sājidīn
15:33 ›
قَالَ لَمۡ أَكُن لِّأَسۡجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٣٣
Al-Muntakhab
"It is not I", Iblis said, "who would cast himself down in reverence to a human whom You created from dried clay, a product of dark modeling clay that has been polished."
qāla lam akun li-asjuda libasharin khalaqtahu min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni
15:34 ›
قَالَ فَٱخۡرُجۡ مِنۡهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِیمࣱ ۝٣٤
Al-Muntakhab
"Then get out of hence", Allah said, " you are dismissed and accursed"
qāla fa-ukh'ruj min'hā fa-innaka rajīmu
15:35 ›
وَإِنَّ عَلَیۡكَ ٱللَّعۡنَةَ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٣٥
Al-Muntakhab
"And the curse shall pursue you till The Day of Judgment"
wa-inna ʿalayka l-laʿnata ilā yawmi l-dīn
15:36 ›
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرۡنِیۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٣٦
Al-Muntakhab
Then Iblis requested Allah saying: "delay, my condemnation", O Allah till the Day of Resurrection"
qāla rabbi fa-anẓir'nī ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn
15:37 ›
قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنظَرِینَ ۝٣٧
Al-Muntakhab
"Reprieve is granted", Allah said, "respiting your condemnation"
qāla fa-innaka mina l-munẓarīn
15:38 ›
إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡوَقۡتِ ٱلۡمَعۡلُومِ ۝٣٨
Al-Muntakhab
"Till the specified Day on which the point of time has been predetermined"
ilā yawmi l-waqti l-maʿlūm
15:39 ›
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَاۤ أَغۡوَیۡتَنِی لَأُزَیِّنَنَّ لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَأُغۡوِیَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٣٩
Al-Muntakhab
"Now, O Allah", Iblis said, that You have destined me and I have erred, I will entangle them with the bird-lime of fleshy passions, mundane vanity and temporalities and I will entice them all to do evil and I will incite idle men to tempt me to tempt them
qāla rabbi bimā aghwaytanī la-uzayyinanna lahum fī l-arḍi wala-ugh'wiyannahum ajmaʿīn
15:40 ›
إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنۡهُمُ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٤٠
Al-Muntakhab
"But not the devout among Your worshippers whose hearts have been touched with the divine hand and they lift to You their inward sight"
illā ʿibādaka min'humu l-mukh'laṣīn
15:41 ›
قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطٌ عَلَیَّ مُسۡتَقِیمٌ ۝٤١
Al-Muntakhab
"This is the path", Allah said, "the devout tread. It is the path of righteousness which leads directly to Me"
qāla hādhā ṣirāṭun ʿalayya mus'taqīmu
15:42 ›
إِنَّ عِبَادِی لَیۡسَ لَكَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٤٢
Al-Muntakhab
"My devout worshippers", Allah continued, "do not come under your authority nor have you the power to influence their conduct and actions; you only have influence over those who follow you and in vanity they waste their days"
inna ʿibādī laysa laka ʿalayhim sul'ṭānun illā mani ittabaʿaka mina l-ghāwīn
15:43 ›
وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوۡعِدُهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٣
Al-Muntakhab
"And Hell is indeed the destination wherein shall they all make their abode"
wa-inna jahannama lamawʿiduhum ajmaʿīn
15:44 ›
لَهَا سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡوَ ٰبࣲ لِّكُلِّ بَابࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ جُزۡءࣱ مَّقۡسُومٌ ۝٤٤
Al-Muntakhab
Apprehended in a material sense, it has seven gates through each of which shall enter those appropriated to the degree of suffering that is commensurate with their evil deeds
lahā sabʿatu abwābin likulli bābin min'hum juz'on maqsūmu
4 Mercy for the Righteous — Abraham
15:45 ›
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝٤٥
Al-Muntakhab
Whereas those who have always entertained the profound reverence dutiful to Allah shall be blessed with divine favour. They are destined to make abode in blissful gardens in the beatitude of heaven fountained wits dazzling springs
inna l-mutaqīna fī jannātin waʿuyūni
15:46 ›
ٱدۡخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِینَ ۝٤٦
Al-Muntakhab
They will be addressed with expression of good will, thus: "Make entry into Paradise", they are told, "We bid you a hearty welcome wherein you shall live in peace, safe and secure"
ud'khulūhā bisalāmin āminīn
15:47 ›
وَنَزَعۡنَا مَا فِی صُدُورِهِم مِّنۡ غِلٍّ إِخۡوَ ٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝٤٧
Al-Muntakhab
And We will have erased malevolence from their breasts and injurious events from their memories; now they are an association of brothers spiritually allied to each other, seated on thrones of dignity facing each other
wanazaʿnā mā fī ṣudūrihim min ghillin ikh'wānan ʿalā sururin mutaqābilīn
15:48 ›
لَا یَمَسُّهُمۡ فِیهَا نَصَبࣱ وَمَا هُم مِّنۡهَا بِمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝٤٨
Al-Muntakhab
There and then they are not overtaken by fatigue nor shall there be an impression of it upon their minds or their souls nor shall they be asked to leave or depart therefrom
lā yamassuhum fīhā naṣabun wamā hum min'hā bimukh'rajīn
15:49 ›
۞ نَبِّئۡ عِبَادِیۤ أَنِّیۤ أَنَا ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٤٩
Al-Muntakhab
Tell My servants O Muhammad that I am indeed AL-Ghafur (the Forgiving) and AL-Rahim (the Merciful)
nabbi ʿibādī annī anā l-ghafūru l-raḥīm
15:50 ›
وَأَنَّ عَذَابِی هُوَ ٱلۡعَذَابُ ٱلۡأَلِیمُ ۝٥٠
Al-Muntakhab
and also that My retributive punishment is indeed severe; it is the torment laid upon the damned
wa-anna ʿadhābī huwa l-ʿadhābu l-alīm
15:51 ›
وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ عَن ضَیۡفِ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٥١
Al-Muntakhab
And inform their thoughts O Muhammad with the disguised angels who were the guests of Ibrahim
wanabbi'hum ʿan ḍayfi ib'rāhīm
15:52 ›
إِذۡ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمࣰا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمۡ وَجِلُونَ ۝٥٢
Al-Muntakhab
They made entry into his home and greeted him with the expression of good will, "Peace", he recoiled back afraid of them -due to their unusual behaviour-
idh dakhalū ʿalayhi faqālū salāman qāla innā minkum wajilūn
15:53 ›
قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوۡجَلۡ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٥٣
Al-Muntakhab
"Do not be afraid". They said, " we have some news to break to you. We are here to announce to you the procreation of a son Ishaq (Isaac) who shall be imbued with wisdom and divine know ledge"
qālū lā tawjal innā nubashiruka bighulāmin ʿalīmi
15:54 ›
قَالَ أَبَشَّرۡتُمُونِی عَلَىٰۤ أَن مَّسَّنِیَ ٱلۡكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ ۝٥٤
Al-Muntakhab
"How can you", said Ibrahim, "intimate to me such news when I have been carried through the stealing steps of age to advanced life! Is this an object of a joke that you intimate to me!"
qāla abashartumūnī ʿalā an massaniya l-kibaru fabima tubashirūn
15:55 ›
قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡقَـٰنِطِینَ ۝٥٥
Al-Muntakhab
"Never", they said, "but we have intimated to you the truth and therefore do not entertain the idea that the thing which seems hopeless makes you despair of Allah's mercy."
qālū basharnāka bil-ḥaqi falā takun mina l-qāniṭīn
15:56 ›
قَالَ وَمَن یَقۡنَطُ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ رَبِّهِۦۤ إِلَّا ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ۝٥٦
Al-Muntakhab
"Who would despair of Allah's mercy", Ibrahim said, " but those who are lost in the maze of error!"
qāla waman yaqnaṭu min raḥmati rabbihi illā l-ḍālūn
15:57 ›
قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ۝٥٧
Al-Muntakhab
"And now", Ibrahim said, "what is the errand on which you Messengers have come?"
qāla famā khaṭbukum ayyuhā l-mur'salūn
15:58 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّاۤ أُرۡسِلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝٥٨
Al-Muntakhab
"We have been sent", the Messengers said, "to a sinful people who grow daily more and more wicked"
qālū innā ur'sil'nā ilā qawmin muj'rimīn
15:59 ›
إِلَّاۤ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٥٩
Al-Muntakhab
"But not the family of Lut (Lot) all of whom will we save"
illā āla lūṭin innā lamunajjūhum ajmaʿīn
15:60 ›
إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرۡنَاۤ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝٦٠
Al-Muntakhab
"Excepting his wife whom we have determined that she be among those who shall be left behind to share their destiny"
illā im'ra-atahu qaddarnā innahā lamina l-ghābirīn
5 Lot and Shu'aib
15:61 ›
فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ۝٦١
Al-Muntakhab
And when the Messengers presented themselves to Lut
falammā jāa āla lūṭin l-mur'salūn
15:62 ›
قَالَ إِنَّكُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ مُّنكَرُونَ ۝٦٢
Al-Muntakhab
He said to them: "You are strangers who are foreign to me."
qāla innakum qawmun munkarūn
15:63 ›
قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ جِئۡنَـٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَمۡتَرُونَ ۝٦٣
Al-Muntakhab
"But", said the Messengers, "we have brought you the answer to the problem of those who doubted your mission and denied your divine message."
qālū bal ji'nāka bimā kānū fīhi yamtarūn
15:64 ›
وَأَتَیۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ ۝٦٤
Al-Muntakhab
"And we have brought you the truth and we conduct ourselves in accordance with the divine standard."
wa-ataynāka bil-ḥaqi wa-innā laṣādiqūn
15:65 ›
فَأَسۡرِ بِأَهۡلِكَ بِقِطۡعࣲ مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱتَّبِعۡ أَدۡبَـٰرَهُمۡ وَلَا یَلۡتَفِتۡ مِنكُمۡ أَحَدࣱ وَٱمۡضُوا۟ حَیۡثُ تُؤۡمَرُونَ ۝٦٥
Al-Muntakhab
"You just escort your family", they said, "and take them out of this town at the dead hours of the night hanging on their rear and none of you shall look in the direction from which you are going and keep going to where you are commanded."
fa-asri bi-ahlika biqiṭ'ʿin mina al-layli wa-ittabiʿ adbārahum walā yaltafit minkum aḥadun wa-im'ḍū ḥaythu tu'marūn
15:66 ›
وَقَضَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡهِ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡأَمۡرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ مَقۡطُوعࣱ مُّصۡبِحِینَ ۝٦٦
Al-Muntakhab
And We informed him of this decree, thus: "These wicked people shall be uprooted by morning"
waqaḍaynā ilayhi dhālika l-amra anna dābira hāulāi maqṭūʿun muṣ'biḥīn
15:67 ›
وَجَاۤءَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ یَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ ۝٦٧
Al-Muntakhab
In the interim, there came the city dwellers displaying their gasp of pleasure and joyous delight at the thought of the presence of young men
wajāa ahlu l-madīnati yastabshirūn
15:68 ›
قَالَ إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ ضَیۡفِی فَلَا تَفۡضَحُونِ ۝٦٨
Al-Muntakhab
"These are my guests", said Lut, "I beg of you not to bring shame or discredit upon me"
qāla inna hāulāi ḍayfī falā tafḍaḥūn
15:69 ›
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخۡزُونِ ۝٦٩
Al-Muntakhab
"And fear Allah and do not disgrace me."
wa-ittaqū l-laha walā tukh'zūn
15:70 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ أَوَ لَمۡ نَنۡهَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٠
Al-Muntakhab
"Did we not forbid you", they said "to entertain people in your house and defend your principles!"
qālū awalam nanhaka ʿani l-ʿālamīn
15:71 ›
قَالَ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ بَنَاتِیۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ فَـٰعِلِینَ ۝٧١
Al-Muntakhab
"There", said Lut, "you may wed my daughters if you must exercise your libidinous desire."
qāla hāulāi banātī in kuntum fāʿilīn
15:72 ›
لَعَمۡرُكَ إِنَّهُمۡ لَفِی سَكۡرَتِهِمۡ یَعۡمَهُونَ ۝٧٢
Al-Muntakhab
"To your life, O prophets" he was told, "they -the wicked- are wandering here and there being deceived by their vain illusive sensuous perception which shall melt when the sun beams glow"
laʿamruka innahum lafī sakratihim yaʿmahūn
15:73 ›
فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ مُشۡرِقِینَ ۝٧٣
Al-Muntakhab
And there it was: a single cry* from heaven's realm stirred up a merciless blast which overtook them by sun- rise
fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu mush'riqīn
15:74 ›
فَجَعَلۡنَا عَـٰلِیَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ حِجَارَةࣰ مِّن سِجِّیلٍ ۝٧٤
Al-Muntakhab
And We turned those cities -Sodom and Gomorrah- upside down and rained them with fire and successional brimstones as hard as baked clay
fajaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim ḥijāratan min sijjīli
15:75 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّلۡمُتَوَسِّمِینَ ۝٧٥
Al-Muntakhab
These are indeed divine signs making a deep impression on the minds or senses of those who ponder
inna fī dhālika laāyātin lil'mutawassimīn
15:76 ›
وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِیلࣲ مُّقِیمٍ ۝٧٦
Al-Muntakhab
And the evidence still stands as a scene of dismal devastation to the travelers (in the neighbourhood of the dead sea between Syria and Arabia)
wa-innahā labisabīlin muqīmi
15:77 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٧٧
Al-Muntakhab
This is indeed a meaningful sign which is quite impressive to those whose hearts have been touched with the divine hand
inna fī dhālika laāyatan lil'mu'minīn
15:78 ›
وَإِن كَانَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأَیۡكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٧٨
Al-Muntakhab
Thus much did the woodlanders Madyanites wrong themselves and were wrongful of actions
wa-in kāna aṣḥābu l-aykati laẓālimīn
15:79 ›
فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٧٩
Al-Muntakhab
And in consequence we took just-vengeance on them and both sites stand manifest of the events on a course of travel where people can see
fa-intaqamnā min'hum wa-innahumā labi-imāmin mubīni
6 Warning to Dwellers of Rock
15:80 ›
وَلَقَدۡ كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡحِجۡرِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٨٠
Al-Muntakhab
Similarly did the dwellers of the rocky territory -the Thamudites- deny the truth of the divine message conveyed to them by the Messengers and were wrongful of actions
walaqad kadhaba aṣḥābu l-ḥij'ri l-mur'salīn
15:81 ›
وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٨١
Al-Muntakhab
And We presented them with Our signs betokening Omnipotence and Authority but they took objection against them and a dislike
waātaynāhum āyātinā fakānū ʿanhā muʿ'riḍīn
15:82 ›
وَكَانُوا۟ یَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتًا ءَامِنِینَ ۝٨٢
Al-Muntakhab
And they were carving the mountains into homes wherein they made abode and enjoyed safety and security
wakānū yanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan āminīn
15:83 ›
فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ مُصۡبِحِینَ ۝٨٣
Al-Muntakhab
Nonetheless a single cry* from heaven's realm stirred up a merciless rumbling earthly convulsion which overtook them by day light
fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu muṣ'biḥīn
15:84 ›
فَمَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٨٤
Al-Muntakhab
And so be it, what they gained of skill and enjoyed of safety did not profit them nor help them accomplish a useful purpose
famā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūn
15:85 ›
وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَءَاتِیَةࣱۖ فَٱصۡفَحِ ٱلصَّفۡحَ ٱلۡجَمِیلَ ۝٨٥
Al-Muntakhab
Nor did We create the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them but in accordance with reason and truth and for just ends. And the Final predetermined Hour is inevitably coming, therefore, forgive O Muhammad your opponent's human instability with gracious intent
wamā khalaqnā l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā illā bil-ḥaqi wa-inna l-sāʿata laātiyatun fa-iṣ'faḥi l-ṣafḥa l-jamīl
15:86 ›
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلۡخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٨٦
Al-Muntakhab
For, it is Allah, indeed who is the Creator of the whole and of all in all and He is the AL-'Alim (the Omniscient)
inna rabbaka huwa l-khalāqu l-ʿalīm
15:87 ›
وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰكَ سَبۡعࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡمَثَانِی وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ ٱلۡعَظِیمَ ۝٨٧
Al-Muntakhab
And We have given you O Muhammad seven reiterative dual verses of opening in Allah's Name: in praise, in thanks, in action and in prayer, and the meritorious Quran which is eminently entitled to the designation, the great
walaqad ātaynāka sabʿan mina l-mathānī wal-qur'āna l-ʿaẓīm
15:88 ›
لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَیۡنَیۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨٨
Al-Muntakhab
Do not direct your sight wistfully O Muhammad at the advantages We gave to some of the unbelievers among the various sects nor grieve at heart for their disobedience to Allah, and be soft in temper and disposition to those whose hearts are impressed with the image of religious and spiritual virtues and take them under your wing
lā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ilā mā mattaʿnā bihi azwājan min'hum walā taḥzan ʿalayhim wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka lil'mu'minīn
15:89 ›
وَقُلۡ إِنِّیۤ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِیرُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٨٩
Al-Muntakhab
And say: "I hereby declare to the wide circle of the all that I am delegated by Allah to make manifest His warning against denying Him and/or His statutes"
waqul innī anā l-nadhīru l-mubīn
15:90 ›
كَمَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡمُقۡتَسِمِینَ ۝٩٠
Al-Muntakhab
Just as We had sent down a warning to those who treated Our Scriptures in the way it suited them dividing them into parts, accepting some and rejecting others
kamā anzalnā ʿalā l-muq'tasimīn
15:91 ›
ٱلَّذِینَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ عِضِینَ ۝٩١
Al-Muntakhab
And together with the Pagans they used their underhand scheming to discredit the Quran by fragmenting it into parts, labelling some as sheer poetry, some as legendary and others as divinatory, and fed the pilgrims thoughts with their falsehood
alladhīna jaʿalū l-qur'āna ʿiḍīn
15:92 ›
فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسۡءَلَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٩٢
Al-Muntakhab
But by Allah, your Creator, there shall come the Day when all of them shall have much to answer for
fawarabbika lanasalannahum ajmaʿīn
15:93 ›
عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٣
Al-Muntakhab
And all their misdeeds shall be laid to their charge
fa-iṣ'daʿ bimā tu'maru wa-aʿriḍ ʿani l-mush'rikīn
15:94 ›
فَٱصۡدَعۡ بِمَا تُؤۡمَرُ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٩٤
Al-Muntakhab
Therefore, you just proclaim Allah's message O Muhammad and publish all that you have been commanded to declare and attach no importance to those who incorporate with Him other deities
FaisdaAA bima tu/maru waaAArid AAani almushrikeena
15:95 ›
إِنَّا كَفَیۡنَـٰكَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَهۡزِءِینَ ۝٩٥
Al-Muntakhab
We have guarded you from the danger of those who hold the truth in disdain, and maintain your cause against their cunning which they take for a sinister and crooked wisdom
innā kafaynāka l-mus'tahziīn
15:96 ›
ٱلَّذِینَ یَجۡعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَۚ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٩٦
Al-Muntakhab
And they incorporate with Allah other deities, but soon shall they know the logical conclusion and experience the losses and injuries which are the consequent of their crimes
alladhīna yajʿalūna maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fasawfa yaʿlamūn
15:97 ›
وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ یَضِیقُ صَدۡرُكَ بِمَا یَقُولُونَ ۝٩٧
Al-Muntakhab
And We do know how much does their vain discourse depress your spirits and oppress your thoughts and your feelings
walaqad naʿlamu annaka yaḍīqu ṣadruka bimā yaqūlūn
15:98 ›
فَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٩٨
Al-Muntakhab
But you just praise Allah, your Creator, and extoll His glorious attributes and join yourself to those who prostrate themselves to Him in reverence and adoration
fasabbiḥ biḥamdi rabbika wakun mina l-sājidīn
15:99 ›
وَٱعۡبُدۡ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ یَأۡتِیَكَ ٱلۡیَقِینُ ۝٩٩
Al-Muntakhab
And worship Allah, your Creator, until the encounter with death which is indeed a matter of certainty
wa-uʿ'bud rabbaka ḥattā yatiyaka l-yaqīn
