1 The Qur'an is guarded

۞ الۤرۚ تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَقُرۡءَانࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١

Alif. Lam. Ra! These are the (Holy) ‘Verses’ of the (comprehensive) Book, and of a manifest Qur’ān

alif-lam-ra til'ka āyātu l-kitābi waqur'ānin mubīni

رُّبَمَا یَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ مُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٢

It may be that those who excessively indulge in disbelief in Allâh will wish ardently that they had submitted (themselves completely to the Authority of Allâh).

rubamā yawaddu alladhīna kafarū law kānū mus'limīn

ذَرۡهُمۡ یَأۡكُلُوا۟ وَیَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَیُلۡهِهِمُ ٱلۡأَمَلُۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣

Let them eat, enjoy, and be engrossed in (false) hope. Soon they will come to know (the truth)!

dharhum yakulū wayatamattaʿū wayul'hihimu l-amalu fasawfa yaʿlamūn

وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤

We never destroyed a township but there was a known decree for it.

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā walahā kitābun maʿlūmu

مَّا تَسۡبِقُ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا یَسۡتَءۡخِرُونَ ۝٥

No nation can precede its term, neither can they postpone it.

mā tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahā wamā yastakhirūn

وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِی نُزِّلَ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلذِّكۡرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٦

They say: "O’ you, (‘Muhammad;), to whom the ‘'Revealer of Truth'’, (the Qur'ân), has been sent down. You are absolutely insane.

waqālū yāayyuhā alladhī nuzzila ʿalayhi l-dhik'ru innaka lamajnūnu

لَّوۡ مَا تَأۡتِینَا بِٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٧

Why do you not bring the ‘Angels’ to us if you are (really) of the truthful?"

law mā tatīnā bil-malāikati in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوۤا۟ إِذࣰا مُّنظَرِینَ ۝٨

We do not send down angels except for a genuine reason; and they would not then be reprieved.

mā nunazzilu l-malāikata illā bil-ḥaqi wamā kānū idhan munẓarīn

إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ ۝٩

It is We Who have sent down the ‘'Revealer of Truth'’, (the Qur'ân), and certainly We are it's Guardian.

innā naḥnu nazzalnā l-dhik'ra wa-innā lahu laḥāfiẓūn

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِی شِیَعِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٠

Verily, We sent ‘Messengers’ before you, (O’ Muhammad), among the sects of yore.

walaqad arsalnā min qablika fī shiyaʿi l-awalīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝١١

There never came a ‘Messenger’ to them but they scoffed at him.

wamā yatīhim min rasūlin illā kānū bihi yastahziūn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَسۡلُكُهُۥ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٢

This is how We let (the habit of mocking the ‘Messenger’) flourish in the hearts of the ungodly sinners.

kadhālika naslukuhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn

لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَقَدۡ خَلَتۡ سُنَّةُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣

They believe not in It, (the ‘Qur'ân’), though the example of the ancients has gone before.

lā yu'minūna bihi waqad khalat sunnatu l-awalīn

وَلَوۡ فَتَحۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم بَابࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِیهِ یَعۡرُجُونَ ۝١٤

Even if we opened for them a gate into the sky and they keep on ascending into it,

walaw fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban mina l-samāi faẓallū fīhi yaʿrujūn

لَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتۡ أَبۡصَـٰرُنَا بَلۡ نَحۡنُ قَوۡمࣱ مَّسۡحُورُونَ ۝١٥

They would definitely say: “Our eyes have been deprived of sight, nay, We have been bewitched."

laqālū innamā sukkirat abṣārunā bal naḥnu qawmun masḥūrūn

2 Evil will be destroyed

وَلَقَدۡ جَعَلۡنَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ بُرُوجࣰا وَزَیَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝١٦

Verily, We made constellations in the heavens, adorned it for the beholders.

walaqad jaʿalnā fī l-samāi burūjan wazayyannāhā lilnnāẓirīn

وَحَفِظۡنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَیۡطَـٰنࣲ رَّجِیمٍ ۝١٧

And guarded it from every outcast devil,

waḥafiẓ'nāhā min kulli shayṭānin rajīmi

إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٨

Except he who steals a hearing is pursued by a fiery meteor.

illā mani is'taraqa l-samʿa fa-atbaʿahu shihābun mubīnu

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَدَدۡنَـٰهَا وَأَلۡقَیۡنَا فِیهَا رَوَ ٰسِیَ وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ مَّوۡزُونࣲ ۝١٩

As for the earth, We spread it out, placed in it firm hills, and caused to grow in it all kinds of things in due proportion.

wal-arḍa madadnāhā wa-alqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli shayin mawzūni

وَجَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَعَـٰیِشَ وَمَن لَّسۡتُمۡ لَهُۥ بِرَ ٰزِقِینَ ۝٢٠

We have made for you therein means of livelihood and for those (animals, birds, fish, etc.) whom you are not providers.

wajaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha waman lastum lahu birāziqīn

وَإِن مِّن شَیۡءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَاۤىِٕنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥۤ إِلَّا بِقَدَرࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٢١

There is not a thing but with Us are the treasures of it, and We send it not down except in a known measure.

wa-in min shayin illā ʿindanā khazāinuhu wamā nunazziluhu illā biqadarin maʿlūmi

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا ٱلرِّیَـٰحَ لَوَ ٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَسۡقَیۡنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَاۤ أَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ بِخَـٰزِنِینَ ۝٢٢

We send the winds fertilizing, and cause water to to descend from the sky, so We give it to you to drink. Lo! You are not its storekeepers.

wa-arsalnā l-riyāḥa lawāqiḥa fa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan fa-asqaynākumūhu wamā antum lahu bikhāzinīn

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ نُحۡیِۦ وَنُمِیتُ وَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَ ٰرِثُونَ ۝٢٣

Indeed, it is We Who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritors.

wa-innā lanaḥnu nuḥ'yī wanumītu wanaḥnu l-wārithūn

وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَقۡدِمِینَ مِنكُمۡ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَءۡخِرِینَ ۝٢٤

Indeed, We know those among you who go forward; and We definitely know those who regress.

walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'taqdimīna minkum walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'takhirīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ یَحۡشُرُهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِیمٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٥

Verily, your Lord will gather them together. Absolutely, He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.

wa-inna rabbaka huwa yaḥshuruhum innahu ḥakīmun ʿalīmu

3 Devil's Opposition to Righteous

وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٢٦

Verily, We created man from sounding clay of altered black mud.

walaqad khalaqnā l-insāna min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni

وَٱلۡجَاۤنَّ خَلَقۡنَـٰهُ مِن قَبۡلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ ۝٢٧

As for the jinn, we created them, before that, from the smokeless flame of fire.

wal-jāna khalaqnāhu min qablu min nāri l-samūm

وَإِذۡ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ إِنِّی خَـٰلِقُۢ بَشَرࣰا مِّن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٢٨

(Recall) when your Lord said unto the ‘Angels’: "I am going to create a man, (‘Adam’), from sounding clay of altered black mud.

wa-idh qāla rabbuka lil'malāikati innī khāliqun basharan min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni

فَإِذَا سَوَّیۡتُهُۥ وَنَفَخۡتُ فِیهِ مِن رُّوحِی فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢٩

So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall (ye) down prostrating yourselves to him."

fa-idhā sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī faqaʿū lahu sājidīn

فَسَجَدَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ كُلُّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٣٠

So the ‘Angels’ prostrated themselves, all of them together

fasajada l-malāikatu kulluhum ajmaʿūn

إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ أَبَىٰۤ أَن یَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٣١

Except ‘Satan’. He refused to be among those who prostrated themselves.

illā ib'līsa abā an yakūna maʿa l-sājidīn

قَالَ یَـٰۤإِبۡلِیسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٣٢

(Allâh) said: "O’ Iblīs (-Satan-), what is the reason that you are not among those who prostrated themselves?"

qāla yāib'līsu mā laka allā takūna maʿa l-sājidīn

قَالَ لَمۡ أَكُن لِّأَسۡجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٣٣

Iblīs said: "It would not be possible for me to prostrate myself to a mortal, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black mud."

qāla lam akun li-asjuda libasharin khalaqtahu min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni

قَالَ فَٱخۡرُجۡ مِنۡهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِیمࣱ ۝٣٤

(Allâh) said: "Then get out of it! Surely you are expelled!

qāla fa-ukh'ruj min'hā fa-innaka rajīmu

وَإِنَّ عَلَیۡكَ ٱللَّعۡنَةَ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٣٥

Verily, the curse will abide in you till the ‘Day of Judgment’."

wa-inna ʿalayka l-laʿnata ilā yawmi l-dīn

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرۡنِیۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٣٦

Iblīs said: “My Lord, then reprieve me till the day when they are raised."

qāla rabbi fa-anẓir'nī ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنظَرِینَ ۝٣٧

(Allâh) said: "Surely, you are among those who are reprieved

qāla fa-innaka mina l-munẓarīn

إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡوَقۡتِ ٱلۡمَعۡلُومِ ۝٣٨

Till the day of the appointed time."

ilā yawmi l-waqti l-maʿlūm

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَاۤ أَغۡوَیۡتَنِی لَأُزَیِّنَنَّ لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَأُغۡوِیَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٣٩

Iblīs said: “My Lord, as You mislead me, I will definitely adorn (the path of evil ) from them ; and I will definitely mislead them all.

qāla rabbi bimā aghwaytanī la-uzayyinanna lahum fī l-arḍi wala-ugh'wiyannahum ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنۡهُمُ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٤٠

Except for your faithful servants among them.”

illā ʿibādaka min'humu l-mukh'laṣīn

قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطٌ عَلَیَّ مُسۡتَقِیمٌ ۝٤١

(Allâh) said: "This is the path which leads straight to Me.

qāla hādhā ṣirāṭun ʿalayya mus'taqīmu

إِنَّ عِبَادِی لَیۡسَ لَكَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٤٢

Verily, You have no power to enforce obedience over My servants except for those who fall into temptation and follow you.

inna ʿibādī laysa laka ʿalayhim sul'ṭānun illā mani ittabaʿaka mina l-ghāwīn

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوۡعِدُهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٣

Certainly, ‘Gehenna’ is the promised place for them all.

wa-inna jahannama lamawʿiduhum ajmaʿīn

لَهَا سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡوَ ٰبࣲ لِّكُلِّ بَابࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ جُزۡءࣱ مَّقۡسُومٌ ۝٤٤

It has seven gates; each gate is designated for a specific group of people.”

lahā sabʿatu abwābin likulli bābin min'hum juz'on maqsūmu

4 Mercy for the Righteous — Abraham

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝٤٥

Indeed, the Pious (or those who show honor and reverence for Allâh/ or those who guard themselves against falling into sin and temptation) will be in gardens and springs.

inna l-mutaqīna fī jannātin waʿuyūni

ٱدۡخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِینَ ۝٤٦

(It will be said unto them): “Enter it in peace and security.”

ud'khulūhā bisalāmin āminīn

وَنَزَعۡنَا مَا فِی صُدُورِهِم مِّنۡ غِلٍّ إِخۡوَ ٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝٤٧

We shall remove from their breasts any sense of resentment, (so they will be like) brothers facing each other on raised couches.

wanazaʿnā mā fī ṣudūrihim min ghillin ikh'wānan ʿalā sururin mutaqābilīn

لَا یَمَسُّهُمۡ فِیهَا نَصَبࣱ وَمَا هُم مِّنۡهَا بِمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝٤٨

No lassitude will ever touch them therein, neither will they be expelled from it.

lā yamassuhum fīhā naṣabun wamā hum min'hā bimukh'rajīn

۞ نَبِّئۡ عِبَادِیۤ أَنِّیۤ أَنَا ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٤٩

Inform My servants that I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful,

nabbi ʿibādī annī anā l-ghafūru l-raḥīm

وَأَنَّ عَذَابِی هُوَ ٱلۡعَذَابُ ٱلۡأَلِیمُ ۝٥٠

And that My Chastisement is definitely the most painful torment.

wa-anna ʿadhābī huwa l-ʿadhābu l-alīm

وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ عَن ضَیۡفِ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٥١

Inform them about the guests of ‘Abraham’

wanabbi'hum ʿan ḍayfi ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمࣰا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمۡ وَجِلُونَ ۝٥٢

When they entered upon him, saying: "Peace." He said: "Indeed, "We are afraid of you."

idh dakhalū ʿalayhi faqālū salāman qāla innā minkum wajilūn

قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوۡجَلۡ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٥٣

They, (the ‘Angels’), said: "Do not be afraid! For behold, I announce to you the joyful news of a boy endowed with wisdom."

qālū lā tawjal innā nubashiruka bighulāmin ʿalīmi

قَالَ أَبَشَّرۡتُمُونِی عَلَىٰۤ أَن مَّسَّنِیَ ٱلۡكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ ۝٥٤

He said: “Do you give me joyful news (of a boy) when old age has touched me? Of what then do you give me joyful news?

qāla abashartumūnī ʿalā an massaniya l-kibaru fabima tubashirūn

قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡقَـٰنِطِینَ ۝٥٥

They said: "We announce to you the joyful news in truth. Thus don't be of those who despair."

qālū basharnāka bil-ḥaqi falā takun mina l-qāniṭīn

قَالَ وَمَن یَقۡنَطُ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ رَبِّهِۦۤ إِلَّا ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ۝٥٦

He said: "No one despairs of the Mercy of his Lord except for those who are astray?”

qāla waman yaqnaṭu min raḥmati rabbihi illā l-ḍālūn

قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ۝٥٧

He said: "What then is your mission, O’ ‘Messengers’?"

qāla famā khaṭbukum ayyuhā l-mur'salūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّاۤ أُرۡسِلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝٥٨

They said: "We have been sent to a folk of ungodly sinners.

qālū innā ur'sil'nā ilā qawmin muj'rimīn

إِلَّاۤ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٥٩

Except for the family of Lot’. We will definitely save them all,

illā āla lūṭin innā lamunajjūhum ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرۡنَاۤ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝٦٠

Except for his wife." We decreed that she should be of those who remain behind.

illā im'ra-atahu qaddarnā innahā lamina l-ghābirīn

5 Lot and Shu'aib

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ۝٦١

Thus, when the ‘Messengers’ came to the family of Lot’ ,

falammā jāa āla lūṭin l-mur'salūn

قَالَ إِنَّكُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ مُّنكَرُونَ ۝٦٢

He said: “Certainly you are people unknown ( here)."

qāla innakum qawmun munkarūn

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ جِئۡنَـٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَمۡتَرُونَ ۝٦٣

They said: "Nay, we have come to you with that about which they were disputing.

qālū bal ji'nāka bimā kānū fīhi yamtarūn

وَأَتَیۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ ۝٦٤

We have come to you with the truth, and we are absolutely truthful.

wa-ataynāka bil-ḥaqi wa-innā laṣādiqūn

فَأَسۡرِ بِأَهۡلِكَ بِقِطۡعࣲ مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱتَّبِعۡ أَدۡبَـٰرَهُمۡ وَلَا یَلۡتَفِتۡ مِنكُمۡ أَحَدࣱ وَٱمۡضُوا۟ حَیۡثُ تُؤۡمَرُونَ ۝٦٥

Thus, go forth with your family in a part of the night, and you follow them in the rear, and let no one among you look back. But keep going to where you are commanded."

fa-asri bi-ahlika biqiṭ'ʿin mina al-layli wa-ittabiʿ adbārahum walā yaltafit minkum aḥadun wa-im'ḍū ḥaythu tu'marūn

وَقَضَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡهِ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡأَمۡرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ مَقۡطُوعࣱ مُّصۡبِحِینَ ۝٦٦

We decreed for him that commandment, that the root of those (sinners) shall be uprooted by early morning.

waqaḍaynā ilayhi dhālika l-amra anna dābira hāulāi maqṭūʿun muṣ'biḥīn

وَجَاۤءَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ یَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ ۝٦٧

The people of the city came rejoicing.

wajāa ahlu l-madīnati yastabshirūn

قَالَ إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ ضَیۡفِی فَلَا تَفۡضَحُونِ ۝٦٨

Lot’ said: “Indeed, these are my guests, thus, do not disgrace me.

qāla inna hāulāi ḍayfī falā tafḍaḥūn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخۡزُونِ ۝٦٩

Act piously towards Allâh (or show honor and reverence for Allâh) and do not humiliate me."

wa-ittaqū l-laha walā tukh'zūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَوَ لَمۡ نَنۡهَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٠

They said: "Did we not forbid you to entertain anyone?"

qālū awalam nanhaka ʿani l-ʿālamīn

قَالَ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ بَنَاتِیۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ فَـٰعِلِینَ ۝٧١

Lot’ said: "These are my daughters if you intend to do."

qāla hāulāi banātī in kuntum fāʿilīn

لَعَمۡرُكَ إِنَّهُمۡ لَفِی سَكۡرَتِهِمۡ یَعۡمَهُونَ ۝٧٢

By your life, (O’ ‘Muhammad’), they were definitely, in their state of inebriation, wandering blindly.

laʿamruka innahum lafī sakratihim yaʿmahūn

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ مُشۡرِقِینَ ۝٧٣

Thus, the (dreadful) cry seized them at sunrise.

fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu mush'riqīn

فَجَعَلۡنَا عَـٰلِیَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ حِجَارَةࣰ مِّن سِجِّیلٍ ۝٧٤

We turned (the city) , and poured down upon them stones of baked clay.

fajaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim ḥijāratan min sijjīli

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّلۡمُتَوَسِّمِینَ ۝٧٥

Indeed, in this are signs (of Allâh’s power & glory) for those who discern.

inna fī dhālika laāyātin lil'mutawassimīn

وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِیلࣲ مُّقِیمٍ ۝٧٦

Indeed, (the ruin of that city) is on a road that still exists.

wa-innahā labisabīlin muqīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٧٧

indeed , in this is a sign ( of Allâh’s power & glory) for those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan lil'mu'minīn

وَإِن كَانَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأَیۡكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٧٨

The ‘Companions of the Thicket’ were definitely iniquitous,

wa-in kāna aṣḥābu l-aykati laẓālimīn

فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٧٩

So We inflicted retribution on them. Both towns are on a conspicuous highway.

fa-intaqamnā min'hum wa-innahumā labi-imāmin mubīni

6 Warning to Dwellers of Rock

وَلَقَدۡ كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡحِجۡرِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٨٠

Indeed, the ‘Companions (of) the Rocky Tract’ (-the tribe of ‘Thamūd’) belied Our ‘Messengers’.

walaqad kadhaba aṣḥābu l-ḥij'ri l-mur'salīn

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٨١

We brought them Our Signs but they insisted on turning away from them in a repulsive manner.

waātaynāhum āyātinā fakānū ʿanhā muʿ'riḍīn

وَكَانُوا۟ یَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتًا ءَامِنِینَ ۝٨٢

They used to grave houses out of the mountains, therein dwelling safely;

wakānū yanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan āminīn

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ مُصۡبِحِینَ ۝٨٣

Thus, the (dreadful) cry seized them at sunrise in the early morning.

fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu muṣ'biḥīn

فَمَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٨٤

Thus nothing availed them from what they used to gain.

famā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūn

وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَءَاتِیَةࣱۖ فَٱصۡفَحِ ٱلصَّفۡحَ ٱلۡجَمِیلَ ۝٨٥

We created not the heavens, the earth and all that is between them (for naught) but with genuine reason. The ‘(Inevitable) Hour’ is absolutely coming. Thus, forgive with gracious forgiveness.

wamā khalaqnā l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā illā bil-ḥaqi wa-inna l-sāʿata laātiyatun fa-iṣ'faḥi l-ṣafḥa l-jamīl

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلۡخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٨٦

Your Lord is definitely the All-knowing Creator.

inna rabbaka huwa l-khalāqu l-ʿalīm

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰكَ سَبۡعࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡمَثَانِی وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ ٱلۡعَظِیمَ ۝٨٧

Indeed, We have bestowed upon you seven of the oft-repeated (Verses) and the Glorious Qur'ân.

walaqad ātaynāka sabʿan mina l-mathānī wal-qur'āna l-ʿaẓīm

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَیۡنَیۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨٨

Extend not your eyes toward what We have bestowed on certain classes of them (of the Unbelievers), neither do you grieve over them. Lower your wing to the ‘Monotheistic Believers’,

lā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ilā mā mattaʿnā bihi azwājan min'hum walā taḥzan ʿalayhim wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka lil'mu'minīn

وَقُلۡ إِنِّیۤ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِیرُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٨٩

And say: “I am truly ‘the perspicuous warner’ ( giving humanity sufficient warning about how to avoid ‘Hellfire’).”

waqul innī anā l-nadhīru l-mubīn

كَمَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡمُقۡتَسِمِینَ ۝٩٠

Like as We sent down on the dividers,

kamā anzalnā ʿalā l-muq'tasimīn

ٱلَّذِینَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ عِضِینَ ۝٩١

Who have made the ‘Qur'ân’ into segments.

alladhīna jaʿalū l-qur'āna ʿiḍīn

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسۡءَلَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٩٢

Thus, by Your Lord, We will definitely question them all

fawarabbika lanasalannahum ajmaʿīn

عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٣

About what they used to do.

fa-iṣ'daʿ bimā tu'maru wa-aʿriḍ ʿani l-mush'rikīn

فَٱصۡدَعۡ بِمَا تُؤۡمَرُ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٩٤

Then proclaim what you are commanded and turn away from the ‘Polytheists’.

FaisdaAA bima tu/maru waaAArid AAani almushrikeena

إِنَّا كَفَیۡنَـٰكَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَهۡزِءِینَ ۝٩٥

We will definitely suffice you against the scoffers,

innā kafaynāka l-mus'tahziīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یَجۡعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَۚ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٩٦

Who set up along with Allâh another god. They will come to know (the truth).

alladhīna yajʿalūna maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fasawfa yaʿlamūn

وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ یَضِیقُ صَدۡرُكَ بِمَا یَقُولُونَ ۝٩٧

Verily, We certainly know that your breast is straitened by what they say.

walaqad naʿlamu annaka yaḍīqu ṣadruka bimā yaqūlūn

فَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٩٨

Thus, glorify the praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate themselves (to Him).

fasabbiḥ biḥamdi rabbika wakun mina l-sājidīn

وَٱعۡبُدۡ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ یَأۡتِیَكَ ٱلۡیَقِینُ ۝٩٩

Worship (& venerate) your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (i.e. death)!.

wa-uʿ'bud rabbaka ḥattā yatiyaka l-yaqīn
