1 The Qur'an is guarded

۞ الۤرۚ تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَقُرۡءَانࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١

A. L. R. These are the signs in Al-Kitâb and Qurânum Mobin

alif-lam-ra til'ka āyātu l-kitābi waqur'ānin mubīni

رُّبَمَا یَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ مُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٢

Frequently, those who have disbelieved, desire and wish — that they had been Muslims

rubamā yawaddu alladhīna kafarū law kānū mus'limīn

ذَرۡهُمۡ یَأۡكُلُوا۟ وَیَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَیُلۡهِهِمُ ٱلۡأَمَلُۖ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣

Leave them: they may eat and enjoy, and vain hope may beguile them, so very soon they will come to know (the reality in comparison to fantasy)

dharhum yakulū wayatamattaʿū wayul'hihimu l-amalu fasawfa yaʿlamūn

وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤

And we have not destroyed any of the town but (there is available) for it Kitâbun M‘auloomun

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā walahā kitābun maʿlūmu

مَّا تَسۡبِقُ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا یَسۡتَءۡخِرُونَ ۝٥

No Ummah (Community) outstrips its appointed life-span and they do not remain existent beyond (that)

mā tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahā wamā yastakhirūn

وَقَالُوا۟ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِی نُزِّلَ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلذِّكۡرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٦

And they said: “O you that on whom Az-Zikr. has been delivered, you are surely a fanatic

waqālū yāayyuhā alladhī nuzzila ʿalayhi l-dhik'ru innaka lamajnūnu

لَّوۡ مَا تَأۡتِینَا بِٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٧

Why not you come to us with angels, if you happen to be out of those who speak the truth?”

law mā tatīnā bil-malāikati in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوۤا۟ إِذࣰا مُّنظَرِینَ ۝٨

We do not send down angels except under a rightful situation; and then they did not become those who are given respite

mā nunazzilu l-malāikata illā bil-ḥaqi wamā kānū idhan munẓarīn

إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ ۝٩

Surely, We, We, We sent down Az-Zikr (‘The Message’) and surely, We, for it are indeed Protectors

innā naḥnu nazzalnā l-dhik'ra wa-innā lahu laḥāfiẓūn

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِی شِیَعِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٠

And surely, indeed, We sent before you amongst the sects (those who brought change in the Permanent Religion of Islam) of the earlier people

walaqad arsalnā min qablika fī shiyaʿi l-awalīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝١١

And there comes not to them out of a Messenger but they used to ridicule him

wamā yatīhim min rasūlin illā kānū bihi yastahziūn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ نَسۡلُكُهُۥ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝١٢

Thus do We let it (disbelief or breahead of state the religion into sects) enter into the hearts of the Mujrimûn

kadhālika naslukuhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn

لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَقَدۡ خَلَتۡ سُنَّةُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣

They would not Believe in this (Al-Kitab), and indeed the practices of the earlier people have gone forth (which resulted into their complete destruction)

lā yu'minūna bihi waqad khalat sunnatu l-awalīn

وَلَوۡ فَتَحۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم بَابࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِیهِ یَعۡرُجُونَ ۝١٤

And even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they were to continue ascending thereto

walaw fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban mina l-samāi faẓallū fīhi yaʿrujūn

لَقَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتۡ أَبۡصَـٰرُنَا بَلۡ نَحۡنُ قَوۡمࣱ مَّسۡحُورُونَ ۝١٥

they would have surely said: “Our eyes have been dazzled. Nay, we are a people under effect of magic.”

laqālū innamā sukkirat abṣārunā bal naḥnu qawmun masḥūrūn

2 Evil will be destroyed

وَلَقَدۡ جَعَلۡنَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ بُرُوجࣰا وَزَیَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝١٦

And surely, indeed We have set Buruj in the heaven and We made it pretty for the beholders

walaqad jaʿalnā fī l-samāi burūjan wazayyannāhā lilnnāẓirīn

وَحَفِظۡنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَیۡطَـٰنࣲ رَّجِیمٍ ۝١٧

And We have guarded it from every outcast devil

waḥafiẓ'nāhā min kulli shayṭānin rajīmi

إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٨

except that (devil) who attempted theft of listening, so a manifestly clear flaming object chased him (to burn him to ashes)

illā mani is'taraqa l-samʿa fa-atbaʿahu shihābun mubīnu

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَدَدۡنَـٰهَا وَأَلۡقَیۡنَا فِیهَا رَوَ ٰسِیَ وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ مَّوۡزُونࣲ ۝١٩

And the earth, We spread out and pegged therein firm mountains; and We caused to grow therein all kinds of things in due proportion

wal-arḍa madadnāhā wa-alqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli shayin mawzūni

وَجَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَعَـٰیِشَ وَمَن لَّسۡتُمۡ لَهُۥ بِرَ ٰزِقِینَ ۝٢٠

And provided for you therein means of sustenance and also (for) that one for whom you are not the providers of sustenance — (like insects, beasts, cattle, amphibians and numerous other seen and unseen creation)

wajaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha waman lastum lahu birāziqīn

وَإِن مِّن شَیۡءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَاۤىِٕنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥۤ إِلَّا بِقَدَرࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٢١

And there is not out of a thing, but with Us are the unending stores thereof and We do not send it down except in a well-known measure

wa-in min shayin illā ʿindanā khazāinuhu wamā nunazziluhu illā biqadarin maʿlūmi

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا ٱلرِّیَـٰحَ لَوَ ٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَسۡقَیۡنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَاۤ أَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ بِخَـٰزِنِینَ ۝٢٢

And We sent the winds, the filling ones (which saturate the clouds with water-vapour), then We showered rains from towards the sky, then We made you to drink that (clean and distilled water) and you are not the owners of stores of this (water)

wa-arsalnā l-riyāḥa lawāqiḥa fa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan fa-asqaynākumūhu wamā antum lahu bikhāzinīn

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ نُحۡیِۦ وَنُمِیتُ وَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَ ٰرِثُونَ ۝٢٣

And certainly We, indeed We, We give life and We cause death and We are the Inheritors

wa-innā lanaḥnu nuḥ'yī wanumītu wanaḥnu l-wārithūn

وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَقۡدِمِینَ مِنكُمۡ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَءۡخِرِینَ ۝٢٤

And surely, indeed, We knew who went before out of you (O mankind), and surely, indeed, We knew the latter ones

walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'taqdimīna minkum walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'takhirīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ یَحۡشُرُهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِیمٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٥

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: He will gather you (all). Truly, He is All-Wise, All-Knowing

wa-inna rabbaka huwa yaḥshuruhum innahu ḥakīmun ʿalīmu

3 Devil's Opposition to Righteous

وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٢٦

And indeed, We created mankind from sounding clay of a black fermented mud

walaqad khalaqnā l-insāna min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni

وَٱلۡجَاۤنَّ خَلَقۡنَـٰهُ مِن قَبۡلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ ۝٢٧

And the jinn, We created aforetime from the flaming, smokeless fire

wal-jāna khalaqnāhu min qablu min nāri l-samūm

وَإِذۡ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ إِنِّی خَـٰلِقُۢ بَشَرࣰا مِّن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٢٨

And (bring to mind) when your Nourisher-Sustainer said to the angels: “Surely, I am about to be a Creator of a human being from sounding clay of a black fermented mud

wa-idh qāla rabbuka lil'malāikati innī khāliqun basharan min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni

فَإِذَا سَوَّیۡتُهُۥ وَنَفَخۡتُ فِیهِ مِن رُّوحِی فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢٩

So when I have fashioned him completely and I have breathed into him of My Spirit, then you become for him as those who prostrate (to Me)

fa-idhā sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī faqaʿū lahu sājidīn

فَسَجَدَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ كُلُّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٣٠

So, the angels prostrated, all of them, en masse

fasajada l-malāikatu kulluhum ajmaʿūn

إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ أَبَىٰۤ أَن یَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٣١

except (the jinn) Iblis — he refused to be alongwith those who prostrate

illā ib'līsa abā an yakūna maʿa l-sājidīn

قَالَ یَـٰۤإِبۡلِیسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٣٢

(Allah) said: “O Iblis! What is to you that you do not become alongside those who prostrate?

qāla yāib'līsu mā laka allā takūna maʿa l-sājidīn

قَالَ لَمۡ أَكُن لِّأَسۡجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ۝٣٣

(Iblis) said: “I did not become: that I prostrate for a human — You have created from sounding clay of a black fermented mud.

qāla lam akun li-asjuda libasharin khalaqtahu min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni

قَالَ فَٱخۡرُجۡ مِنۡهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِیمࣱ ۝٣٤

(Allah) said: “Then get out from here, for verily, you are Rajim (an outcast; cursed one, chased one)

qāla fa-ukh'ruj min'hā fa-innaka rajīmu

وَإِنَّ عَلَیۡكَ ٱللَّعۡنَةَ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٣٥

And verily, upon you (shall be) curse till the Day of Judgement.”

wa-inna ʿalayka l-laʿnata ilā yawmi l-dīn

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرۡنِیۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٣٦

(Iblis) said: “My Lord! So give me respite till the Day they (the dead ones) are resurrected.”

qāla rabbi fa-anẓir'nī ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنظَرِینَ ۝٣٧

(Allah) said: “So, verily, you are of those reprieved

qāla fa-innaka mina l-munẓarīn

إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡوَقۡتِ ٱلۡمَعۡلُومِ ۝٣٨

till the Day: the Wellknown Time.”

ilā yawmi l-waqti l-maʿlūm

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَاۤ أَغۡوَیۡتَنِی لَأُزَیِّنَنَّ لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَأُغۡوِیَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٣٩

(Iblis) said: “My Lord! Because you allowed me to be misled I will surely make appear dazzling to them (every evil) in the earth, and I will indeed mislead them all together

qāla rabbi bimā aghwaytanī la-uzayyinanna lahum fī l-arḍi wala-ugh'wiyannahum ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنۡهُمُ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ۝٤٠

except your Ibad: the purified and sanctified amongst them.”

illā ʿibādaka min'humu l-mukh'laṣīn

قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَ ٰطٌ عَلَیَّ مُسۡتَقِیمٌ ۝٤١

(Allah) said: “This becomes the Permanent Path which leads to Me

qāla hādhā ṣirāṭun ʿalayya mus'taqīmu

إِنَّ عِبَادِی لَیۡسَ لَكَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٤٢

Certainly, My Ibad: there is no authority to overpower them in you, except (for him) who followed you, (being) of those who have lost the Track

inna ʿibādī laysa laka ʿalayhim sul'ṭānun illā mani ittabaʿaka mina l-ghāwīn

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوۡعِدُهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٣

And surely, Hell is indeed the promised place for them all

wa-inna jahannama lamawʿiduhum ajmaʿīn

لَهَا سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡوَ ٰبࣲ لِّكُلِّ بَابࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ جُزۡءࣱ مَّقۡسُومٌ ۝٤٤

For it are seven (i.e., many) gates, for each gate (overhere is) an assigned class of those (sinners, transgressors, polytheists, pagans, disbelievers and those who did not respect the Oneness of Allah)

lahā sabʿatu abwābin likulli bābin min'hum juz'on maqsūmu

4 Mercy for the Righteous — Abraham

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝٤٥

Truly! The Muttaqun will reside in the Gardens and water-springs.

inna l-mutaqīna fī jannātin waʿuyūni

ٱدۡخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِینَ ۝٤٦

(It will be said to them): “Enter therein, in peace, as those who have attained security.”

ud'khulūhā bisalāmin āminīn

وَنَزَعۡنَا مَا فِی صُدُورِهِم مِّنۡ غِلٍّ إِخۡوَ ٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝٤٧

And we removed what was inside their hearts in the form of aversion or disinclination, (mahead of state them like) brothers facing each other on thrones

wanazaʿnā mā fī ṣudūrihim min ghillin ikh'wānan ʿalā sururin mutaqābilīn

لَا یَمَسُّهُمۡ فِیهَا نَصَبࣱ وَمَا هُم مِّنۡهَا بِمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝٤٨

No sense of fatigue shall touch them therein and they will not be out of it (ever) as those who have been made to leave

lā yamassuhum fīhā naṣabun wamā hum min'hā bimukh'rajīn

۞ نَبِّئۡ عِبَادِیۤ أَنِّیۤ أَنَا ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٤٩

Inform My Ibad that I: I am the Oft-Forgiving, the continuously Merciful

nabbi ʿibādī annī anā l-ghafūru l-raḥīm

وَأَنَّ عَذَابِی هُوَ ٱلۡعَذَابُ ٱلۡأَلِیمُ ۝٥٠

And that My torment: it is a torment extremely painful

wa-anna ʿadhābī huwa l-ʿadhābu l-alīm

وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ عَن ضَیۡفِ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٥١

And inform them about the (angel-) guests of Ibrahim

wanabbi'hum ʿan ḍayfi ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمࣰا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمۡ وَجِلُونَ ۝٥٢

When they entered unto him, then they said Salaman (Peace)! (Ibrahim) said: “Indeed! We feel disturbed of you.”

idh dakhalū ʿalayhi faqālū salāman qāla innā minkum wajilūn

قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوۡجَلۡ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٥٣

They (the angels) said: “Do not feel disturbed. Indeed, we transmit you glad tidings of a son possessing deep knowledge.

qālū lā tawjal innā nubashiruka bighulāmin ʿalīmi

قَالَ أَبَشَّرۡتُمُونِی عَلَىٰۤ أَن مَّسَّنِیَ ٱلۡكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ ۝٥٤

(Ibrahim got astonished and) said: “Do you transmit me glad tidings (of a son) inspite of that old age has overtaken me ? So on what basis you transmit me the good news?”

qāla abashartumūnī ʿalā an massaniya l-kibaru fabima tubashirūn

قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡقَـٰنِطِینَ ۝٥٥

They said: “We have transmitted you the good news with dependable authority. So do not be out of those who have lost hope.”

qālū basharnāka bil-ḥaqi falā takun mina l-qāniṭīn

قَالَ وَمَن یَقۡنَطُ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ رَبِّهِۦۤ إِلَّا ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ۝٥٦

(Ibrahim) said: “And who despairs of the Mercy of his Nourisher-Sustainer except those who have gone astray?”

qāla waman yaqnaṭu min raḥmati rabbihi illā l-ḍālūn

قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ۝٥٧

(Ibrahim further) said: “So, what is your assigned mission, O you the sent-ones

qāla famā khaṭbukum ayyuhā l-mur'salūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّاۤ أُرۡسِلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝٥٨

They said: “Indeed we, we have been sent to a nation of Mujrimun (criminals)

qālū innā ur'sil'nā ilā qawmin muj'rimīn

إِلَّاۤ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٥٩

except the family-members of (Prophet) Lout. Indeed, we, surely we are rescuers to them all

illā āla lūṭin innā lamunajjūhum ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرۡنَاۤ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝٦٠

except his wife, We have decreed: indeed, she is surely of those who get overwhelmed in dust and debris

illā im'ra-atahu qaddarnā innahā lamina l-ghābirīn

5 Lot and Shu'aib

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ۝٦١

So when the sent-ones (the angel-messengers) came unto the family-members of Lout

falammā jāa āla lūṭin l-mur'salūn

قَالَ إِنَّكُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ مُّنكَرُونَ ۝٦٢

he said: “Verily, you are (the members of) a nation unfamiliar (to me).”

qāla innakum qawmun munkarūn

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ جِئۡنَـٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَمۡتَرُونَ ۝٦٣

(The angels) said: ‘Nay! We have come to you with that (torment and punishment) which they have been doubting

qālū bal ji'nāka bimā kānū fīhi yamtarūn

وَأَتَیۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ ۝٦٤

And we have come to you with full authority, and surely, we are indeed those who speak the truth

wa-ataynāka bil-ḥaqi wa-innā laṣādiqūn

فَأَسۡرِ بِأَهۡلِكَ بِقِطۡعࣲ مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱتَّبِعۡ أَدۡبَـٰرَهُمۡ وَلَا یَلۡتَفِتۡ مِنكُمۡ أَحَدࣱ وَٱمۡضُوا۟ حَیۡثُ تُؤۡمَرُونَ ۝٦٥

So move away with your followers with a little part of the night (i.e., at the terminal part of the night) and you be in their rear and no one amongst you shall turn his attention (to the place he is leaving from) and continue to move as you are ordered.”

fa-asri bi-ahlika biqiṭ'ʿin mina al-layli wa-ittabiʿ adbārahum walā yaltafit minkum aḥadun wa-im'ḍū ḥaythu tu'marūn

وَقَضَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡهِ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلۡأَمۡرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ مَقۡطُوعࣱ مُّصۡبِحِینَ ۝٦٦

And We decided in his favour this matter: that the foundation of these people (would be) cut off, when they are those who face the morning

waqaḍaynā ilayhi dhālika l-amra anna dābira hāulāi maqṭūʿun muṣ'biḥīn

وَجَاۤءَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ یَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ ۝٦٧

And there came the residents of the town rejoicing (to get hold of the ‘young men’)

wajāa ahlu l-madīnati yastabshirūn

قَالَ إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ ضَیۡفِی فَلَا تَفۡضَحُونِ ۝٦٨

(Prophet Lout) said: “Verily, all these are guests to me, so embarrass me not

qāla inna hāulāi ḍayfī falā tafḍaḥūn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخۡزُونِ ۝٦٩

And pay obedience to Allah and disgrace me not.”

wa-ittaqū l-laha walā tukh'zūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَوَ لَمۡ نَنۡهَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٠

(The gays) said: “Did we then not forbid you against (giving protection to people of) the worlds?

qālū awalam nanhaka ʿani l-ʿālamīn

قَالَ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ بَنَاتِیۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ فَـٰعِلِینَ ۝٧١

(Prophet Lout) said: “All these (females are like) my daughters. (They are purer for you to marry) if you are those who desire to be active.

qāla hāulāi banātī in kuntum fāʿilīn

لَعَمۡرُكَ إِنَّهُمۡ لَفِی سَكۡرَتِهِمۡ یَعۡمَهُونَ ۝٧٢

Your life acts as a witness. Surely, they indeed, behaved as blind (to moral standards) in their wild intoxication

laʿamruka innahum lafī sakratihim yaʿmahūn

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ مُشۡرِقِینَ ۝٧٣

So As-Saiha seized them while they were about to be those who witnessed the sunrise

fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu mush'riqīn

فَجَعَلۡنَا عَـٰلِیَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ حِجَارَةࣰ مِّن سِجِّیلٍ ۝٧٤

Then We turned the elevated things of that (habitation) to submerged things of that (habitation); and We rained over those people stones from the fully recorded (store house of such stones which are piled up over there and specifically marked for such purposes)

fajaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim ḥijāratan min sijjīli

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّلۡمُتَوَسِّمِینَ ۝٧٥

Surely in this are indeed signs for those who think and then derive the conclusions

inna fī dhālika laāyātin lil'mutawassimīn

وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِیلࣲ مُّقِیمٍ ۝٧٦

And surely that (habitation in its time of bloom existed) right on the well-maintained Highway

wa-innahā labisabīlin muqīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٧٧

Surely, herein is indeed a sign for the Believers

inna fī dhālika laāyatan lil'mu'minīn

وَإِن كَانَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡأَیۡكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٧٨

And indeed, the residents of Aika were surely transgressors

wa-in kāna aṣḥābu l-aykati laẓālimīn

فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٧٩

So We punished them in retribution. And both of these (habitations existed) right on the all-season Highway

fa-intaqamnā min'hum wa-innahumā labi-imāmin mubīni

6 Warning to Dwellers of Rock

وَلَقَدۡ كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡحِجۡرِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٨٠

And verily, the residents of Al-Hijr (the rocky tract) denied the Messengers

walaqad kadhaba aṣḥābu l-ḥij'ri l-mur'salīn

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٨١

And We delivered them Ayaatina but they became to it as those who are averse

waātaynāhum āyātinā fakānū ʿanhā muʿ'riḍīn

وَكَانُوا۟ یَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتًا ءَامِنِینَ ۝٨٢

And they used to carve and hew out residential suites in the mountains (feeling) fully secure (against natural calamity)

wakānū yanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan āminīn

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ مُصۡبِحِینَ ۝٨٣

But (when they transgressed beyond limits) As-Saiha overtook them while they were about to witness the morning

fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu muṣ'biḥīn

فَمَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٨٤

And did not provide benefit to them what they used to earn

famā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūn

وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَءَاتِیَةࣱۖ فَٱصۡفَحِ ٱلصَّفۡحَ ٱلۡجَمِیلَ ۝٨٥

And We created not the heavens and the earth and whatever is between these two except with a just and sound purpose. And surely, the Hour is indeed approaching-one. So overlook (the faults of others, and let this) overloohead of state (be) tender and pretty

wamā khalaqnā l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā illā bil-ḥaqi wa-inna l-sāʿata laātiyatun fa-iṣ'faḥi l-ṣafḥa l-jamīl

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلۡخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٨٦

Verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer, He is the Ultimate Creator, the All-Knowing One

inna rabbaka huwa l-khalāqu l-ʿalīm

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰكَ سَبۡعࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡمَثَانِی وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ ٱلۡعَظِیمَ ۝٨٧

And surely, indeed, We have bestowed upon you Saban min Al-Masani and Al-Quran-al-Azeem

walaqad ātaynāka sabʿan mina l-mathānī wal-qur'āna l-ʿaẓīm

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَیۡنَیۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦۤ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨٨

Do not make your two eyes wide open at what We have bestowed thereby certain classes of them and do not grieve because of them. And lower your wing (of mercy) for the Believers

lā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ilā mā mattaʿnā bihi azwājan min'hum walā taḥzan ʿalayhim wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka lil'mu'minīn

وَقُلۡ إِنِّیۤ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِیرُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝٨٩

And say: “Certainly I, I am a warner, evident and manifest.

waqul innī anā l-nadhīru l-mubīn

كَمَاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡمُقۡتَسِمِینَ ۝٩٠

As We sent down (Our curse and disagreement) on those who divided (the Scripture out of their own whims into equal parts and thus mutilated the integrity of its Surahs) —

kamā anzalnā ʿalā l-muq'tasimīn

ٱلَّذِینَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ عِضِینَ ۝٩١

those who made Al-Quran into (thirty or sixty equal) parts (on the basis of the thickness of volume, completely disregarding the subject matter and the divisions sanctioned by the Divine Author)

alladhīna jaʿalū l-qur'āna ʿiḍīn

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسۡءَلَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٩٢

So, your Nourisher-Sustainer becomes Witness! Indeed, We shall question them altogether

fawarabbika lanasalannahum ajmaʿīn

عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٣

for that which they used to do

fa-iṣ'daʿ bimā tu'maru wa-aʿriḍ ʿani l-mush'rikīn

فَٱصۡدَعۡ بِمَا تُؤۡمَرُ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٩٤

Therefore propagate openly that which you are commanded and keep away from Al-Mushrikun

FaisdaAA bima tu/maru waaAArid AAani almushrikeena

إِنَّا كَفَیۡنَـٰكَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَهۡزِءِینَ ۝٩٥

Truly We, We sufficed you against those who ridicule (the Message and the Messenger)

innā kafaynāka l-mus'tahziīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یَجۡعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَۚ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٩٦

those who accept and adopt alongwith Allah another ilah (god or deity), so, soon they will come to know (the repercussions)

alladhīna yajʿalūna maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fasawfa yaʿlamūn

وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ یَضِیقُ صَدۡرُكَ بِمَا یَقُولُونَ ۝٩٧

And truly, indeed We know that your chest constricts (your heart takes it very hard on itself) at what they say

walaqad naʿlamu annaka yaḍīqu ṣadruka bimā yaqūlūn

فَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٩٨

So remain very active with the Praise of your Nourisher-Sustainer and be of those who prostrate (themselves before Him). [There are some sects and many offshoots who have completely deleted the act of prostration from the format of canonical prayer invented by them)

fasabbiḥ biḥamdi rabbika wakun mina l-sājidīn

وَٱعۡبُدۡ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ یَأۡتِیَكَ ٱلۡیَقِینُ ۝٩٩

And pay obedience to your Nourisher-Sustainer until there comes unto you Al-Yaqeen (‘the certain event’. It refers to the moment of death)

wa-uʿ'bud rabbaka ḥattā yatiyaka l-yaqīn
