1 The Prophet is consoled

۞ طسۤمۤ ۝١

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢

These are the Verses of the clear book (the Qur’an).

til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-mubīn

لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣

It may be that you (O Muhammad) are going to kill yourself (with grief) because they don’t become believers.

laʿallaka bākhiʿun nafsaka allā yakūnū mu'minīn

إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ءَایَةࣰ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَـٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِینَ ۝٤

If We will, We could send down a Verse to them from the heaven so their necks would bend to it in humility.

in nasha nunazzil ʿalayhim mina l-samāi āyatan faẓallat aʿnāquhum lahā khāḍiʿīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٥

And never comes to them any reminder from the Gracious (Allah) as a recent revelation, but they have been turning away from it.

wamā yatīhim min dhik'rin mina l-raḥmāni muḥ'dathin illā kānū ʿanhu muʿ'riḍīn

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَیَأۡتِیهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰۤؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٦

So they have denied (this Qur’an), then the news will come to them of what they were mocking at.

faqad kadhabū fasayatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝٧

Don’t they observe the earth to see how much We have caused every good kind to grow in it?

awalam yaraw ilā l-arḍi kam anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨

Surely, in this is a Sign, yet most of them are not believers.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٩

And surely, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

2 Moses called and sent to Pharaoh

وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱئۡتِ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠

And (remember) when your Lord called Moses (saying): “You go to the people who are wrongdoers,

wa-idh nādā rabbuka mūsā ani i'ti l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ أَلَا یَتَّقُونَ ۝١١

the people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allah?”

qawma fir'ʿawna alā yattaqūn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُكَذِّبُونِ ۝١٢

He said: “My Lord! Surely, I fear that they will deny me,

qāla rabbi innī akhāfu an yukadhibūn

وَیَضِیقُ صَدۡرِی وَلَا یَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِی فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ ۝١٣

and my breast straitens, and my tongue does not express well. So send Aaron.

wayaḍīqu ṣadrī walā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa-arsil ilā hārūn

وَلَهُمۡ عَلَیَّ ذَنۢبࣱ فَأَخَافُ أَن یَقۡتُلُونِ ۝١٤

And they have a charge of crime (man-slaughter) against me, and I fear they will kill me.”

walahum ʿalayya dhanbun fa-akhāfu an yaqtulūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۖ فَٱذۡهَبَا بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝١٥

(Allah) said: “Nay! Go you both with Our Signs. Surely! We shall be with you, listening.

qāla kallā fa-idh'habā biāyātinā innā maʿakum mus'tamiʿūn

فَأۡتِیَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦

And go to Pharaoh both of you and say: We are the Messengers of the Lord of the worlds.

fatiyā fir'ʿawna faqūlā innā rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٧

So (send to go) with us the children of Israel.”

an arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīl

قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِینَا وَلِیدࣰا وَلَبِثۡتَ فِینَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِینَ ۝١٨

(Pharaoh) said (to Moses): “Did we not bring you up among us as a child? You stayed with us many years of your life.

qāla alam nurabbika fīnā walīdan walabith'ta fīnā min ʿumurika sinīn

وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِی فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٩

And you did what you did (crime of killing a man). You are one of the ungrateful.”

wafaʿalta faʿlataka allatī faʿalta wa-anta mina l-kāfirīn

قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَاۤ إِذࣰا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٢٠

Moses said: “I did it then when I was from the misguided.

qāla faʿaltuhā idhan wa-anā mina l-ḍālīn

فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِی رَبِّی حُكۡمࣰا وَجَعَلَنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٢١

So I fled from you when I feared you. But my Lord has granted me right judgment, and made me one of the Messengers.

fafarartu minkum lammā khif'tukum fawahaba lī rabbī ḥuk'man wajaʿalanī mina l-mur'salīn

وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةࣱ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَیَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٢٢

And this is a favor with which you admonish me, that you have enslaved the children of Israel.”

watil'ka niʿ'matun tamunnuhā ʿalayya an ʿabbadtta banī is'rāīl

قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٣

Pharaoh said: “And who is the Lord of the worlds?”

qāla fir'ʿawnu wamā rabbu l-ʿālamīn

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِینَ ۝٢٤

(Moses) said: “Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, if you are seeking to be convinced with certainty.”

qāla rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīn

قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٢٥

(Pharaoh) said to those around him: “Don’t you hear (what he says)?”

qāla liman ḥawlahu alā tastamiʿūn

قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٦

(Moses) said: “(Allah is) your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers!

qāla rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīn

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٢٧

(Pharaoh) said: “Surely, your Messenger who has been sent to you is a madman!”

qāla inna rasūlakumu alladhī ur'sila ilaykum lamajnūnu

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨

(Moses) said: “Lord of the east and the west, and all that is between them, if you did but understand!”

qāla rabbu l-mashriqi wal-maghribi wamā baynahumā in kuntum taʿqilūn

قَالَ لَىِٕنِ ٱتَّخَذۡتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَیۡرِی لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسۡجُونِینَ ۝٢٩

(Pharaoh) said: “If you choose one worthy of worship other than me, I will certainly put you among the prisoners.”

qāla la-ini ittakhadhta ilāhan ghayrī la-ajʿalannaka mina l-masjūnīn

قَالَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَیۡءࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٣٠

(Moses) said: “Even if I bring you something clear?”

qāla awalaw ji'tuka bishayin mubīni

قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣١

(Pharaoh) said: “Bring it forth, if you are from the truthful!”

qāla fati bihi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٣٢

So (Moses) threw his stick, and behold, it was a clear serpent.

fa-alqā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thuʿ'bānun mubīnu

وَنَزَعَ یَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِیَ بَیۡضَاۤءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝٣٣

And then he drew out his hand, and behold, it became white (bright) to all beholders!

wanazaʿa yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍāu lilnnāẓirīn

3 Moses and Enchanters

قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٣٤

(Pharaoh) said to the chiefs around him: “Surely! This is indeed a well-Versed sorcerer,

qāla lil'mala-i ḥawlahu inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīmu

یُرِیدُ أَن یُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ ۝٣٥

he wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery. Now what is it that you advice?”

yurīdu an yukh'rijakum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihi famādhā tamurūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٣٦

They said: “Put him off and his brother (for a while), and send callers to the cities;

qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-ib'ʿath fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

یَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٧

they will bring to you every well-Versed sorcerer.”

yatūka bikulli saḥḥārin ʿalīmi

فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٣٨

So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on an appointed Day.

fajumiʿa l-saḥaratu limīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi

وَقِیلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٣٩

And it was said to the people: “Will you assemble?

waqīla lilnnāsi hal antum muj'tamiʿūn

لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤٠

So that we may follow the sorcerers if they are the winners.”

laʿallanā nattabiʿu l-saḥarata in kānū humu l-ghālibīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَىِٕنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤١

When the sorcerers arrived, they said to Pharaoh: “Is there a reward for us if we are the winners?”

falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qālū lifir'ʿawna a-inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn

قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٢

(Pharaoh) said: “Yes, and surely then you will be of those brought near (to me).”

qāla naʿam wa-innakum idhan lamina l-muqarabīn

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٤٣

Moses said to them: “Throw what you are going to throw!”

qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn

فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِیَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝٤٤

So they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: “By the might of Pharaoh, it is we who will be the winners!”

fa-alqaw ḥibālahum waʿiṣiyyahum waqālū biʿizzati fir'ʿawna innā lanaḥnu l-ghālibūn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝٤٥

Then Moses threw his stick, and behold, it swallowed up all that they falsely showed!

fa-alqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn

فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٤٦

And the sorcerers fell down prostrate,

fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn

قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٧

saying: “We believe in the Lord of the worlds,

qālū āmannā birabbi l-ʿālamīn

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝٤٨

the Lord of Moses and Aaron.”

rabbi mūsā wahārūn

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٩

(Pharaoh) said: “You have believed in him before I give permission to you. Surely, he is your chief who has taught you magic! So surely, you shall come to know. I will cut off your hands and your legs on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all.”

qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra falasawfa taʿlamūna la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn

قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَیۡرَۖ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝٥٠

They said: “No harm (don’t care)! Surely, we are going to return to our Lord (anyway).

qālū lā ḍayra innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَاۤ أَن كُنَّاۤ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥١

Surely! We hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers (in Moses).”

innā naṭmaʿu an yaghfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwala l-mu'minīn

4 Moses delivered, Pharaoh drowned

۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۤ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ۝٥٢

And We revealed to Moses saying: “Depart by night with My servants, surely, you will be pursued.”

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī innakum muttabaʿūn

فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٥٣

Then Pharaoh sent callers to the cities,

fa-arsala fir'ʿawnu fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِیلُونَ ۝٥٤

(saying): “Surely! These are (indeed but) a small band,

inna hāulāi lashir'dhimatun qalīlūn

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَاۤىِٕظُونَ ۝٥٥

and surely, they have enraged us;

wa-innahum lanā laghāiẓūn

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِیعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ ۝٥٦

and surely we are all assembled, well prepared.”

wa-innā lajamīʿun ḥādhirūn

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٥٧

So, We made them leave from their gardens, water springs,

fa-akhrajnāhum min jannātin waʿuyūni

وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٥٨

treasures, and honorable places.

wakunūzin wamaqāmin karīmi

كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

Thus We caused the children of Israel to inherit such things.

kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā banī is'rāīl

فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِینَ ۝٦٠

So they (people of Pharaoh) pursued them at sunrise.

fa-atbaʿūhum mush'riqīn

فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٰۤءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ ۝٦١

And when the 2 hosts saw (each other), the companions of Moses said: “Surely we are to be overtaken.”

falammā tarāā l-jamʿāni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamud'rakūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٦٢

(Moses) said: “Nay, surely! With me is my Lord, He will guide me.”

qāla kallā inna maʿiya rabbī sayahdīn

فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٦٣

Then We revealed to Moses (saying): “Strike the sea with your stick.” It parted, and each part (of the sea water) became like the huge mountain.

fa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-infalaqa fakāna kullu fir'qin kal-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīm

وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٤

Then We brought near (to that sea) the others (Pharaoh and his army).

wa-azlafnā thamma l-ākharīn

وَأَنجَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٦٥

and We saved Moses and all those with him,

wa-anjaynā mūsā waman maʿahu ajmaʿīn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٦

then We drowned the others.

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٧

Surely! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

5 History of Abraham

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٦٨

and surely, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٦٩

And recite to them the story of Abraham,

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٠

when he (Abraham) said his father and his people: “What do you worship?”

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mā taʿbudūn

قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِینَ ۝٧١

They said: “We worship idols, and we remain devoted to them.”

qālū naʿbudu aṣnāman fanaẓallu lahā ʿākifīn

قَالَ هَلۡ یَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ ۝٧٢

He said: “Do they hear you when you call (on them)?

qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūn

أَوۡ یَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَضُرُّونَ ۝٧٣

Or do they benefit you or do they harm you?”

aw yanfaʿūnakum aw yaḍurrūn

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٤

They said: “Nay, but we found our forefathers doing so.”

qālū bal wajadnā ābāanā kadhālika yafʿalūn

قَالَ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٥

He said: “Do you observe which you have been worshipping,

qāla afara-aytum mā kuntum taʿbudūn

أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ ۝٧٦

you and your forefathers?

antum waābāukumu l-aqdamūn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّیۤ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٧

Surely! They are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds;

fa-innahum ʿaduwwun lī illā rabba l-ʿālamīn

ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَنِی فَهُوَ یَهۡدِینِ ۝٧٨

who has created me, and it is He who guides me

alladhī khalaqanī fahuwa yahdīn

وَٱلَّذِی هُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِی وَیَسۡقِینِ ۝٧٩

And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink

wa-alladhī huwa yuṭ'ʿimunī wayasqīn

وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ یَشۡفِینِ ۝٨٠

and when I am ill, it is He Who cures me;

wa-idhā mariḍ'tu fahuwa yashfīn

وَٱلَّذِی یُمِیتُنِی ثُمَّ یُحۡیِینِ ۝٨١

Who will cause me to die, then will bring me to life (again);

wa-alladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥ'yīn

وَٱلَّذِیۤ أَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لِی خَطِیۤءَتِی یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٨٢

and Who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense.”

wa-alladhī aṭmaʿu an yaghfira lī khaṭīatī yawma l-dīn

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی حُكۡمࣰا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِی بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٣

(Abraham prayed): “My Lord! Bestow wisdom on me, join me with the righteous,

rabbi hab lī ḥuk'man wa-alḥiq'nī bil-ṣāliḥīn

وَٱجۡعَل لِّی لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٨٤

and grant me an honorable mention in later generations,

wa-ij'ʿal lī lisāna ṣid'qin fī l-ākhirīn

وَٱجۡعَلۡنِی مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨٥

and make me one of the inheritors of the Paradise of Delight,

wa-ij'ʿalnī min warathati jannati l-naʿīm

وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِیۤ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٨٦

and forgive my father, surely he is of the erring,

wa-igh'fir li-abī innahu kāna mina l-ḍālīn

وَلَا تُخۡزِنِی یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٨٧

and don’t disgrace me on the Day when all creatures will be resurrected,

walā tukh'zinī yawma yub'ʿathūn

یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ ۝٨٨

the Day when neither wealth nor sons will avail,

yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun walā banūn

إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

except the one who will bring a clean heart to Allah,

illā man atā l-laha biqalbin salīmi

وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٩٠

and Paradise will be brought near to the pious,

wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīn

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِیمُ لِلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٩١

and the hellfire will be placed in full view for the erring,

waburrizati l-jaḥīmu lil'ghāwīn

وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٩٢

and it will be said to them: “Where are those (false deities) that you used to worship,

waqīla lahum ayna mā kuntum taʿbudūn

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ یَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَنتَصِرُونَ ۝٩٣

instead of Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?”

min dūni l-lahi hal yanṣurūnakum aw yantaṣirūn

فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِیهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٩٤

Then they will be thrown on their faces into it (fire), they are those who were in error,

fakub'kibū fīhā hum wal-ghāwūn

وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِیسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٩٥

and the hosts (soldiers) of Satan together,

wajunūdu ib'līsa ajmaʿūn

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٩٦

they will say while they argue in it,

qālū wahum fīhā yakhtaṣimūn

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٧

(saying): “by Allah, we were truly in a clear error,

tal-lahi in kunnā lafī ḍalālin mubīni

إِذۡ نُسَوِّیكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٨

when We held you (false deities) as equals (in worship) with the Lord of the worlds

idh nusawwīkum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

وَمَاۤ أَضَلَّنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٩٩

And none has brought us into error except the criminals.

wamā aḍallanā illā l-muj'rimūn

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِینَ ۝١٠٠

Now we have no intercessors,

famā lanā min shāfiʿīn

وَلَا صَدِیقٍ حَمِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

nor a close friend (to help us).

walā ṣadīqin ḥamīmi

فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٢

If we had a chance (to return to the world), we would be among the believers!”

falaw anna lanā karratan fanakūna mina l-mu'minīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

Surely! In this narration there is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

And surely, your Lord, He is truly the All-Mighty, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٠٥

The people of Noah denied the Messengers.

kadhabat qawmu nūḥin l-mur'salīn

6 History of Noah

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٠٦

When their brother Noah said to them: “Will you not fear Allah?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum nūḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٠٧

Surely I am a trustworthy Messenger to you,

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٠٨

so fear Allah, and obey me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٩

I don’t ask you any reward for it (my message), my reward is not but from the Lord of the worlds,

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١١٠

so fear Allah and obey me.”

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

۞ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ ۝١١١

They said: “Shall we believe in you, when the lowest (of the people) follow you?”

qālū anu'minu laka wa-ittabaʿaka l-ardhalūn

قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِی بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٢

He said: “And what knowledge have I of what they used to do?

qāla wamā ʿil'mī bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّیۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١١٣

Their account is with my Lord, if you could know.

in ḥisābuhum illā ʿalā rabbī law tashʿurūn

وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٤

And I am not going to drive away the believers.

wamā anā biṭāridi l-mu'minīn

إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٥

I am not but a plain Warner.”

in anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِینَ ۝١١٦

They said: “If you don’t cease, O Noah! You will surely be among those stoned (to death).”

qālū la-in lam tantahi yānūḥu latakūnanna mina l-marjūmīn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی كَذَّبُونِ ۝١١٧

He said: “My Lord! Surely, my people have denied me.

qāla rabbi inna qawmī kadhabūn

فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰا وَنَجِّنِی وَمَن مَّعِیَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨

Therefore judge between me and them with fair judgment, and save me and those of the believers who are with me.”

fa-if'taḥ baynī wabaynahum fatḥan wanajjinī waman maʿiya mina l-mu'minīn

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١١٩

And We saved him and those with him in the laden ship

fa-anjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝١٢٠

then We drowned the rest (disbelievers) thereafter.

thumma aghraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢١

Surely, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

7 History of Hud

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٢٢

And surely! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٌ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

Ad (people) denied the Messengers.

kadhabat ʿādun l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

When their brother Hud said to them: “Will you not fear Allah?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum hūdun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٢٥

Surely! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٢٦

So fear Allah, and obey me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢٧

I don’t ask you any reward for it, my reward is from the Lord of the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِیعٍ ءَایَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ ۝١٢٨

Do you build landmark on every high palace to play for fun?

atabnūna bikulli rīʿin āyatan taʿbathūn

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ ۝١٢٩

And do you take for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will reside therein forever

watattakhidhūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum takhludūn

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ۝١٣٠

And when you seize anyone, you seize him as tyrants.

wa-idhā baṭashtum baṭashtum jabbārīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٣١

So fear Allah, and obey me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٢

And Fear Him Who has aided you with all (good things) that you know.

wa-ittaqū alladhī amaddakum bimā taʿlamūn

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٣٣

He has aided you with cattle, children,

amaddakum bi-anʿāmin wabanīn

وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٣٤

and gardens, and springs.

wajannātin waʿuyūni

إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥

Surely, I fear for you the punishment of a Great Day.”

innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦

They said: “It is the same to us whether you preach or you are not of those who preach.

qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧

This is nothing but the customs of the ancients.

in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn

وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨

And we are not going to be punished.”

wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩

So they denied him, and We destroyed them. Surely! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠

And surely! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

8 History of Salih

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١

Thamud (people) denied the Messengers.

kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢

When their brother Saleh said to them: “Will you not fear Allah?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣

Surely I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٤٤

So fear Allah, and obey me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٤٥

I don’t ask any reward for it (my message); my reward is from the Lord of the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِی مَا هَـٰهُنَاۤ ءَامِنِینَ ۝١٤٦

Will you be left secure in that which you have here (forever)?

atut'rakūna fī mā hāhunā āminīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝١٤٧

In gardens, springs,

fī jannātin waʿuyūni

وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِیمࣱ ۝١٤٨

and cornfields, and date-palms with its soft flowering branches,

wazurūʿin wanakhlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmu

وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا فَـٰرِهِینَ ۝١٤٩

and you carve houses in the mountains skillfully?

watanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan fārihīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٥٠

So fear Allah, and obey me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَلَا تُطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٥١

And don’t follow the command of the wasters,

walā tuṭīʿū amra l-mus'rifīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا یُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٢

who make mischief in the land, and don’t reform.”

alladhīna yuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi walā yuṣ'liḥūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٥٣

They said: “Surely you are only of those bewitched!

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

مَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِءَایَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٤

You are not but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful.”

mā anta illā basharun mith'lunā fati biāyatin in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝١٥٥

He (Saleh) said: “This is a she-camel (Allah sent as you asked); it has a right to drink water and you have a right to drink water on a known day.

qāla hādhihi nāqatun lahā shir'bun walakum shir'bu yawmin maʿlūmi

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥٦

And don’t touch her with harm, lest the punishment of a great Day may seize you.”

walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaẓīmi

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝١٥٧

But they killed her, and then they became regretful,

faʿaqarūhā fa-aṣbaḥū nādimīn

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٨

so the punishment overtook them. Surely, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٥٩

And surely! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

9 History of Lot

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٦٠

The people of Lot denied the Messengers.

kadhabat qawmu lūṭin l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦١

When their brother Lot said to them: “Will you not fear Allah?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum lūṭun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٦٢

Surely! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٦٣

So fear Allah, and obey me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٤

I don’t ask of you any reward for it (my message), my reward is from the Lord of the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلذُّكۡرَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٥

And will you go into the males (to fornicate) of the mankind,

atatūna l-dhuk'rāna mina l-ʿālamīn

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ ۝١٦٦

and leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your wives? Nay, you are a transgressing people!”

watadharūna mā khalaqa lakum rabbukum min azwājikum bal antum qawmun ʿādūn

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝١٦٧

They said: “If you don’t cease, O Lot! Surely, you will be one of those who are expelled!”

qālū la-in lam tantahi yālūṭu latakūnanna mina l-mukh'rajīn

قَالَ إِنِّی لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِینَ ۝١٦٨

He said: “I am, indeed of those who disapprove with severe anger and fury.

qāla innī liʿamalikum mina l-qālīn

رَبِّ نَجِّنِی وَأَهۡلِی مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٩

My Lord! Save me and my family from what they do.”

rabbi najjinī wa-ahlī mimmā yaʿmalūn

فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٧٠

So We saved him and all his family,

fanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٧١

except an old woman (his wife) among those who remained behind.

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٧٢

Then afterward We destroyed the others.

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَسَاۤءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٣

And We rained on them a rain (of punishment). Evil was the rain which fell on those who had been warned.

wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fasāa maṭaru l-mundharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٤

Surely, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٧٥

And surely! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

10 History of Shu'aib

كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ لۡءَیۡكَةِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧٦

The residents of Al-Aiyka (a garden with thick trees near Midian) denied the Messengers.

kadhaba aṣḥābu al'aykati l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧٧

When Shuaib said to them: “Will you not fear Allah?

idh qāla lahum shuʿaybun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٧٨

I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٧٩

So fear Allah, and obey me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٠

I don’t ask of you any reward for it (my message), my reward is from the Lord of the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

۞ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡسِرِینَ ۝١٨١

Give full measure, and don’t be among those who cause loss (to others by fraud).

awfū l-kayla walā takūnū mina l-mukh'sirīn

وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمِ ۝١٨٢

And weigh with the just straight balance

wazinū bil-qis'ṭāsi l-mus'taqīm

وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٨٣

and neither defraud people by reducing their things, nor do evil in the land making corruption.

walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٨٤

And fear Him Who created you and the generations before you.”

wa-ittaqū alladhī khalaqakum wal-jibilata l-awalīn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٨٥

They said: “Surely you are one of those bewitched!

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

وَمَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝١٨٦

You are not but a human being like us and surely, we think that indeed you are one of the liars!

wamā anta illā basharun mith'lunā wa-in naẓunnuka lamina l-kādhibīn

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا كِسَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٧

So cause a piece of the heaven to fall on us, if you are of the truthful!”

fa-asqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina l-samāi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ رَبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٨

He said: “My Lord is Best Knower of what you do.”

qāla rabbī aʿlamu bimā taʿmalūn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٨٩

But they denied him, so the punishment of the Day of shadow (cloud carrying Allah’s punishment) seized them, indeed that was the punishment of a great Day.

fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahum ʿadhābu yawmi l-ẓulati innahu kāna ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٠

Surely, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٩١

And surely! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

11 Prophet's Opponents warned

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِیلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٩٢

And truly, this (the Qur’an) is a revelation of the Lord of the worlds.

wa-innahu latanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِینُ ۝١٩٣

The trustworthy spirit (Gabriel) has brought down

nazala bihi l-rūḥu l-amīn

عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِینَ ۝١٩٤

upon your heart (O Muhammad) so that you may be one of the warners

bilisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīni

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیࣲّ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٩٥

in the plain Arabic language.

Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِی زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٩٦

And surely, it (the Qur’an) has the Scriptures of former people.

wa-innahu lafī zuburi l-awalīn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَایَةً أَن یَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰۤؤُا۟ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٩٧

Is it not a sign to them that the learned scholars knew it of the children of Israel?

awalam yakun lahum āyatan an yaʿlamahu ʿulamāu banī is'rāīl

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِینَ ۝١٩٨

And if We had revealed it (this Qur’an) to any of the non-Arabs,

walaw nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-aʿjamīn

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٩

and who had recited it (in Arabic) to them, they would still not have believed in it.

faqara-ahu ʿalayhim mā kānū bihi mu'minīn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٢٠٠

We have caused it (disbelief) to enter in the hearts of the criminals.

kadhālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn

لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٢٠١

They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment;

lā yu'minūna bihi ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

فَیَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٠٢

it will come to them suddenly while they don’t perceive it.

fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

فَیَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ۝٢٠٣

Then they will say: “Can we be given respite?”

fayaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٢٠٤

Do they wish to hasten on Our Punishment?

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِینَ ۝٢٠٥

Have you thought if We do let them enjoy for years,

afara-ayta in mattaʿnāhum sinīn

ثُمَّ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٠٦

and afterwards comes to them what (punishment) they are promised

thumma jāahum mā kānū yūʿadūn

مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُمَتَّعُونَ ۝٢٠٧

all that which their past enjoyment be to them?

mā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨

And We never destroyed a township without sending its warners,

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā mundhirūn

ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٠٩

by way of reminder (in advance), and We have never been unjust.

dhik'rā wamā kunnā ẓālimīn

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢١٠

And it is not the devils who have brought it (this Qur’an) down,

wamā tanazzalat bihi l-shayāṭīn

وَمَا یَنۢبَغِی لَهُمۡ وَمَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٢١١

neither it would suit them, nor they can produce it.

wamā yanbaghī lahum wamā yastaṭīʿūn

إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ ۝٢١٢

Surely, they have been removed far from hearing it.

innahum ʿani l-samʿi lamaʿzūlūn

فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٢١٣

So don’t invoke with Allah another one worthy of worship lest you be among those who receive punishment.

falā tadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fatakūna mina l-muʿadhabīn

وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِیرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَ ۝٢١٤

And warn your tribe (O Muhammad) of near relatives

wa-andhir ʿashīrataka l-aqrabīn

وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢١٥

and lower or put down your wing (be kind and humble) to those of the believers who follow you

wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka limani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn

فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢١٦

if they disobey you, say: “Verily, I am not responsible for what you do.”

fa-in ʿaṣawka faqul innī barīon mimmā taʿmalūn

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢١٧

And put your trust in the Mighty, the Merciful,

watawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi l-raḥīm

ٱلَّذِی یَرَىٰكَ حِینَ تَقُومُ ۝٢١٨

Who sees you (O Muhammad) when you stand up (at night in prayers),

alladhī yarāka ḥīna taqūm

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِی ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢١٩

and see your movements among those who fall prostrate.

wataqallubaka fī l-sājidīn

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٢٢٠

Surely! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.

innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢٢١

Shall I inform you (O people!) upon whom the devils descend?

hal unabbi-ukum ʿalā man tanazzalu l-shayāṭīn

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٢٢٢

They descend on every liar, sinner

tanazzalu ʿalā kulli affākin athīmi

یُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٢٣

who gives ear (to the devils), most of them are liars,

yul'qūna l-samʿa wa-aktharuhum kādhibūn

وَٱلشُّعَرَاۤءُ یَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٢٢٤

as for the poets, the erring ones follow them.

wal-shuʿarāu yattabiʿuhumu l-ghāwūn

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ وَادࣲ یَهِیمُونَ ۝٢٢٥

Don’t you see how aimlessly they wander in every valley

alam tara annahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūn

وَأَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٢٢٦

and say what they don’t do

wa-annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūn

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَیَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ یَنقَلِبُونَ ۝٢٢٧

Except those who believe, do righteous deeds, remember Allah much, and vindicate themselves after they have wronged. Those who do wrong (will know) what overturning they will be overturned.

illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wadhakarū l-laha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wasayaʿlamu alladhīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabin yanqalibūn
