قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

[Pharaoh] said: 'You believe in Him even before I have given you permission! Surely, this one must be your master who has taught you witchcraft! But in time you shall come to know. I shall most certainly have your hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, and I shall most certainly crucify you all.'

qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra falasawfa taʿlamūna la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn

26:50

قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَیۡرَۖ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝٥٠

They said: 'No harm [can you cause us]. To our Lord we shall indeed return.

qālū lā ḍayra innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn

26:51

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَاۤ أَن كُنَّاۤ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥١

We certainly hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, since we are the first who have believed.'

innā naṭmaʿu an yaghfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwala l-mu'minīn

26:52

۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۤ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ۝٥٢

Then We revealed to Moses: 'Set forth with My servants by night, for you will be pursued.'

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī innakum muttabaʿūn

26:53

فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٥٣

Pharaoh sent heralds to all cities,

fa-arsala fir'ʿawnu fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

26:54

إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِیلُونَ ۝٥٤

[saying]: 'These are but a small band,

inna hāulāi lashir'dhimatun qalīlūn

26:55

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَاۤىِٕظُونَ ۝٥٥

and most certainly they have enraged us;

wa-innahum lanā laghāiẓūn

26:56

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِیعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ ۝٥٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

but we are all united, and well prepared.'

wa-innā lajamīʿun ḥādhirūn

26:57

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٥٧

Thus We drove them out of their gardens, springs,

fa-akhrajnāhum min jannātin waʿuyūni

26:58

وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٥٨

treasures and honourable positions.

wakunūzin wamaqāmin karīmi

26:59

كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

And We bequeathed it all to the Children of Israel.

kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā banī is'rāīl

26:60

فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِینَ ۝٦٠

And so they [i.e. Pharaoh's army] pursued them at sunrise.

fa-atbaʿūhum mush'riqīn

26:61

فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٰۤءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ ۝٦١

When the two hosts came in sight of each other, the followers of Moses said: 'We shall certainly be overtaken.'

falammā tarāā l-jamʿāni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamud'rakūn

26:62

قَالَ كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٦٢

He replied: 'No indeed! My Lord is with me and He will guide me.'

qāla kallā inna maʿiya rabbī sayahdīn

26:63

فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٦٣

And We revealed to Moses: 'Strike the sea with your staff.' So it divided, and each part was like a massive mountain.

fa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-infalaqa fakāna kullu fir'qin kal-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīm

26:64

وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٤

And We caused the others to draw near,

wa-azlafnā thamma l-ākharīn

26:65

وَأَنجَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٦٥

and We saved Moses and all who were with him,

wa-anjaynā mūsā waman maʿahu ajmaʿīn

26:66

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٦

while We caused the others to drown.

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

26:67

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٧

Indeed, there is in this a sure sign; yet most of them will not believe.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

26:68

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٦٨

And indeed it is your Lord who is the Mighty One, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

26:69

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٦٩

Relate to them the story of Abraham,

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a ib'rāhīm

26:70

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٠

when he said to his father and his people: 'What is that you worship?'

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mā taʿbudūn

26:71

قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِینَ ۝٧١

They answered: 'We worship idols, and we remain devoted to them.'

qālū naʿbudu aṣnāman fanaẓallu lahā ʿākifīn

26:72

قَالَ هَلۡ یَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ ۝٧٢

Said he: 'Do they hear you when you call on them,

qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūn

26:73

أَوۡ یَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَضُرُّونَ ۝٧٣

or benefit you or do you harm?'

aw yanfaʿūnakum aw yaḍurrūn

26:74

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٤

They said: 'But we found our forefathers doing the same.'

qālū bal wajadnā ābāanā kadhālika yafʿalūn

26:75

قَالَ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٥

He said: 'Do you see those which you have been worshipping â€”

qāla afara-aytum mā kuntum taʿbudūn

26:76

أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ ۝٧٦

you and your forefathers of old?

antum waābāukumu l-aqdamūn

26:77

فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّیۤ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٧

They are my enemies, except for the Lord of all the worlds.

fa-innahum ʿaduwwun lī illā rabba l-ʿālamīn

26:78

ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَنِی فَهُوَ یَهۡدِینِ ۝٧٨

'It is He who has created me, and is the One who guides me.

alladhī khalaqanī fahuwa yahdīn

26:79

وَٱلَّذِی هُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِی وَیَسۡقِینِ ۝٧٩

He is the One who gives me to eat and to drink.

wa-alladhī huwa yuṭ'ʿimunī wayasqīn

26:80

وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ یَشۡفِینِ ۝٨٠

When I fall ill, He is the One who restores me to health,

wa-idhā mariḍ'tu fahuwa yashfīn

26:81

وَٱلَّذِی یُمِیتُنِی ثُمَّ یُحۡیِینِ ۝٨١

and will cause me to die and then will bring me back to life.

wa-alladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥ'yīn

26:82

وَٱلَّذِیۤ أَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لِی خَطِیۤءَتِی یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٨٢

It is He also who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgement.'

wa-alladhī aṭmaʿu an yaghfira lī khaṭīatī yawma l-dīn

26:83

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی حُكۡمࣰا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِی بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

'My Lord! Grant me sound judgement, and join me with the righteous;

rabbi hab lī ḥuk'man wa-alḥiq'nī bil-ṣāliḥīn

26:84

وَٱجۡعَل لِّی لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٨٤

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

and grant me the advocacy of the truth in later generations;

wa-ij'ʿal lī lisāna ṣid'qin fī l-ākhirīn

26:85

وَٱجۡعَلۡنِی مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨٥

place me among those who will inherit the garden of bliss!

wa-ij'ʿalnī min warathati jannati l-naʿīm

26:86

وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِیۤ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٨٦

Forgive my father; for he is among the ones who have gone astray.

wa-igh'fir li-abī innahu kāna mina l-ḍālīn

26:87

وَلَا تُخۡزِنِی یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٨٧

Let me not suffer disgrace on the Day when all shall be raised from the dead;

walā tukh'zinī yawma yub'ʿathūn

26:88

یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ ۝٨٨

the Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any benefit;

yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun walā banūn

26:89

إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

but only the one who comes to God with a sound heart [will be happy]

illā man atā l-laha biqalbin salīmi

26:90

وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٩٠

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Paradise will be brought within sight of the God-fearing;

wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīn

26:91

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِیمُ لِلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٩١

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

whereas the blazing fire will be placed in full view of the ones lost in error.

waburrizati l-jaḥīmu lil'ghāwīn

26:92

وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٩٢

It shall be said to them: 'Where is now all that you used to worship

waqīla lahum ayna mā kuntum taʿbudūn

26:93

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ یَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَنتَصِرُونَ ۝٩٣

instead of God? Can they help you or even help themselves?'

min dūni l-lahi hal yanṣurūnakum aw yantaṣirūn

26:94

فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِیهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٩٤

They will be hurled into hell, as also those who are lost in error,

fakub'kibū fīhā hum wal-ghāwūn

26:95

وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِیسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٩٥

and IblÄ«s' hosts, all together.

wajunūdu ib'līsa ajmaʿūn

26:96

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٩٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

And there, quarrelling with one another, they will say:

qālū wahum fīhā yakhtaṣimūn

26:97

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٧

'By God, we were obviously in error,

tal-lahi in kunnā lafī ḍalālin mubīni

26:98

إِذۡ نُسَوِّیكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٨

when we deemed you equal to the Lord of all the worlds.

idh nusawwīkum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

26:99

وَمَاۤ أَضَلَّنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٩٩

It was only the truly guilty ones who led us astray.

wamā aḍallanā illā l-muj'rimūn

26:100

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِینَ ۝١٠٠

And now we have none to intercede for us

famā lanā min shāfiʿīn

26:101

وَلَا صَدِیقٍ حَمِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

nor any loving friend.

walā ṣadīqin ḥamīmi

26:102

فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٢

Would that we had a second chance [in life], so that we could be believers.'

falaw anna lanā karratan fanakūna mina l-mu'minīn

26:103

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Indeed, there is in this a sure sign; yet most of them will not believe.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

26:104

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

And indeed it is your Lord who is the Mighty One, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

26:105

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٠٥

The people of Noah, too, denied God's messengers.

kadhabat qawmu nūḥin l-mur'salīn

26:106

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٠٦

Their brother Noah said to them: 'Will you have no fear of God?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum nūḥun alā tattaqūn

26:107

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٠٧

I am a Messenger [sent by Him] to you, worthy of all trust.

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

26:108

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٠٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

So, fear God and pay heed to me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

26:109

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

No reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of all the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

26:110

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١١٠

So, fear God and pay heed to me.'

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

26:111

۞ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ ۝١١١

They said: Are we to believe in you, even though only the lowest of the low follow you?'

qālū anu'minu laka wa-ittabaʿaka l-ardhalūn

26:112

قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِی بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٢

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Said he: 'What knowledge do I have as to what they used to do in the past?

qāla wamā ʿil'mī bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

26:113

إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّیۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١١٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Their reckoning rests with none other than my Lord, if you could but understand.

in ḥisābuhum illā ʿalā rabbī law tashʿurūn

26:114

وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٤

I am not one to drive away the believers.

wamā anā biṭāridi l-mu'minīn

26:115

إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

I am only a plain warner.'

in anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu

26:116

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِینَ ۝١١٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Said they: 'Noah! If you will not desist, you will surely be stoned to death.'

qālū la-in lam tantahi yānūḥu latakūnanna mina l-marjūmīn

26:117

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی كَذَّبُونِ ۝١١٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

He prayed: 'My Lord! My people have denied me.

qāla rabbi inna qawmī kadhabūn

26:118

فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰا وَنَجِّنِی وَمَن مَّعِیَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

So, judge decisively between me and them, and save me and those of the believers who are with me.'

fa-if'taḥ baynī wabaynahum fatḥan wanajjinī waman maʿiya mina l-mu'minīn

26:119

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١١٩

So We saved him, and those with him, in the laden ark,

fa-anjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

26:120

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝١٢٠

and We caused the others who stayed behind to drown.

thumma aghraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīn

26:121

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢١

Indeed, there is in this a sure sign; yet most of them will not believe.

26:122

The `Ä€d, too, denied God's messengers.

kadhabat ʿādun l-mur'salīn

26:124

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

Their brother HÅ«d said to them: Will you have no fear of God?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum hūdun alā tattaqūn

26:125

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٢٥

I am a Messenger [sent by Him] to you, worthy of all trust.

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

26:126

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٢٦

So, fear God and pay heed to me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

26:127

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢٧

No reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of all the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

26:128

أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِیعٍ ءَایَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ ۝١٢٨

'Do you build a landmark on every high place, in a vain endeavour,

atabnūna bikulli rīʿin āyatan taʿbathūn

26:129

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ ۝١٢٩

and make for yourselves strong structures, hoping to be immortal?

watattakhidhūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum takhludūn

26:130

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ۝١٣٠

When you exercise your power, you do so like cruel tyrants.

wa-idhā baṭashtum baṭashtum jabbārīn

26:131

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٣١

So, fear God and pay heed to me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

26:132

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٢

Fear Him who has provided you with all that you know.

wa-ittaqū alladhī amaddakum bimā taʿlamūn

26:133

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٣٣

He has provided you with cattle and children,

amaddakum bi-anʿāmin wabanīn

26:134

وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٣٤

and gardens and springs.

wajannātin waʿuyūni

26:135

إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥

Indeed, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome day.'

innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

26:136

قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦

They answered: 'It is all one to us whether you admonish us or you never give admonition.

qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn

26:137

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧

This is none but the practice of the ancients.

in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn

26:138

وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨

Never are we going to be punished.'

wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

26:139

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩

Thus they denied him. So We destroyed them. Indeed, there is in this a sure sign; yet most of them will not believe.

fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

26:140

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠

And indeed it is your Lord who is the Mighty One, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

26:141

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١

The ThamÅ«d, too, denied God's messengers.

kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn

26:142

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢

Their brother ÅžÄliÄ¥ said to them: Will you have no fear of God?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn

26:143

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣

I am a Messenger [sent by Him] to you, worthy of all trust.

26:144

26:146

أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِی مَا هَـٰهُنَاۤ ءَامِنِینَ ۝١٤٦

Will you be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here,

atut'rakūna fī mā hāhunā āminīn

26:147

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝١٤٧

among gardens and springs

fī jannātin waʿuyūni

26:148

وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِیمࣱ ۝١٤٨

and plantations and palm-trees laden with ripe fruit?

wazurūʿin wanakhlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmu

26:149

وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا فَـٰرِهِینَ ۝١٤٩

You carve dwellings out of the mountains with great skill.

watanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan fārihīn

26:150

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٥٠

So, fear God and pay heed to me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

26:151

وَلَا تُطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٥١

And pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesse

walā tuṭīʿū amra l-mus'rifīn

26:152

ٱلَّذِینَ یُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا یُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٢

â€” who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights.'

alladhīna yuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi walā yuṣ'liḥūn

26:153

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٥٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

They said: 'You are but one who has been bewitched.

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

26:154

مَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِءَایَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٤

You are only a human being like us. So bring us a sign if you are a man of truth.'

mā anta illā basharun mith'lunā fati biāyatin in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

26:155

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝١٥٥

He said: 'Here is a she-camel: she shall have her drinking share, and you shall have your drinking share, each on an appointed day.

qāla hādhihi nāqatun lahā shir'bun walakum shir'bu yawmin maʿlūmi

26:156

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥٦

Do not harm her, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day.'

walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaẓīmi

26:157

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝١٥٧

But they cruelly slew her; then they became regretful.

faʿaqarūhā fa-aṣbaḥū nādimīn

26:158

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٨

So the suffering befell them. Indeed, there is in this a sure sign; yet most of them will not believe.

fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

26:159

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٥٩

And indeed it is your Lord who is the Mighty One, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

26:160

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٦٠

The people of Lot, too, denied God's messengers.

kadhabat qawmu lūṭin l-mur'salīn

26:161

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦١

Their brother Lot said to them: Will you have no fear of God?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum lūṭun alā tattaqūn

26:162

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٦٢

Of all the creatures in the world, will you lustfully approach males,

atatūna l-dhuk'rāna mina l-ʿālamīn

26:166

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ ۝١٦٦

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

and eschew the wives God has created for you? You are indeed people who transgress all bounds.'

watadharūna mā khalaqa lakum rabbukum min azwājikum bal antum qawmun ʿādūn

26:167

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝١٦٧

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Said they: 'Lot! If you will not desist, you will most certainly be expelled.'

qālū la-in lam tantahi yālūṭu latakūnanna mina l-mukh'rajīn

26:168

قَالَ إِنِّی لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِینَ ۝١٦٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

He said: 'I am one who utterly abhors your doings.

qāla innī liʿamalikum mina l-qālīn

26:169

رَبِّ نَجِّنِی وَأَهۡلِی مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٩

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

My Lord! Save me and my family from what they do.'

rabbi najjinī wa-ahlī mimmā yaʿmalūn

26:170

فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٧٠

So We saved him and all his family

fanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

26:171

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٧١

except an old woman, who was among those who stayed behind.

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

26:172

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٧٢

Then We utterly destroyed the others,

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

26:173

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَسَاۤءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

and rained down upon them a [devastating] rain. Dire indeed was the rain that fell upon those who were warned [to no avail].

wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fasāa maṭaru l-mundharīn

26:174

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٤

Indeed, there is in this a sure sign; yet most of them will not believe.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

26:175

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٧٥

The dwellers of the wooded dales [of Madyan], too, denied God's messengers.

kadhaba aṣḥābu al'aykati l-mur'salīn

26:177

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧٧

Their brother Shu`ayb said to them: 'Will you have no fear of God?

idh qāla lahum shuʿaybun alā tattaqūn

26:178

26:180

26:181

۞ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡسِرِینَ ۝١٨١

Give full measure; and be not of those who give others less [than their due];

awfū l-kayla walā takūnū mina l-mukh'sirīn

26:182

وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمِ ۝١٨٢

and weigh with even scales;

wazinū bil-qis'ṭāsi l-mus'taqīm

26:183

وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٨٣

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

and do not deprive others of what rightfully belongs to them; and do not act wickedly on earth spreading corruption;

walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

26:184

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٨٤

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

and fear Him who has created you as well as the countless generations of old.'

wa-ittaqū alladhī khalaqakum wal-jibilata l-awalīn

26:185

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٨٥

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

They said: 'You are but one who has been bewitched.

26:186

وَمَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝١٨٦

You are only a human being like us! And, indeed, we believe that you are lying.

wamā anta illā basharun mith'lunā wa-in naẓunnuka lamina l-kādhibīn

26:187

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا كِسَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٧

Cause, then, fragments of the sky to fall down on us, if you are a man of truth.'

fa-asqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina l-samāi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

26:188

قَالَ رَبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٨

Sayyid Qutb (transcription in progress)

Answered he: 'My Lord knows fully well all that you do.'

qāla rabbī aʿlamu bimā taʿmalūn

26:189

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٨٩

But they denied him. Thus suffering overtook them on the day of the darkening cloud. It was truly the suffering of an awesome day.

fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahum ʿadhābu yawmi l-ẓulati innahu kāna ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

26:190

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٠

Indeed, there is in this a sure sign; yet most of them will not believe.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

26:191

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٩١

And indeed it is your Lord who is the Mighty One, the Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

26:192

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِیلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٩٢

Most certainly, this [Qur'Än] has been bestowed from on high by the Lord of all the worlds.

wa-innahu latanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

26:193

نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِینُ ۝١٩٣

The trustworthy Spirit has brought it down

nazala bihi l-rūḥu l-amīn

26:194

عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِینَ ۝١٩٤

into your heart â€” so that you may give warning,

bilisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīni

26:195

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیࣲّ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٩٥

in the clear Arabic tongue.

Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin

26:196

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِی زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٩٦

It was surely foretold in the revealed books of former peoples.

wa-innahu lafī zuburi l-awalīn

26:197

أَوَ لَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَایَةً أَن یَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰۤؤُا۟ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٩٧

Is it not sufficient proof for them that the learned ones among the Children of Israel have recognized it [as true]?

awalam yakun lahum āyatan an yaʿlamahu ʿulamāu banī is'rāīl

26:198

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِینَ ۝١٩٨

Had We revealed it to any non- Arab,

walaw nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-aʿjamīn

26:199

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٩

and had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.

faqara-ahu ʿalayhim mā kānū bihi mu'minīn

26:200

كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٢٠٠

Thus have We caused it to pass through the hearts of the guilty:

kadhālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn

26:201

لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٢٠١

they shall not believe in it until they see the grievous suffering.

lā yu'minūna bihi ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

26:202

فَیَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٠٢

It will come to them suddenly, without their being aware of it.

fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

26:203

فَیَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ۝٢٠٣

And then they will say: 'Could we have a respite?'

fayaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn

26:204

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٢٠٤

Do they, then, wish that Our punishment be hurried on?

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

26:205

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِینَ ۝٢٠٥

But consider this: If We allow them to enjoy themselves for several years,

afara-ayta in mattaʿnāhum sinīn

26:206

ثُمَّ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٠٦

and then the promised [punishment] befalls them â€”

thumma jāahum mā kānū yūʿadūn

26:207

مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُمَتَّعُونَ ۝٢٠٧

of what avail to them will be all their past enjoyment?

mā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūn

26:208

وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨

Never have We destroyed any community unless it had received warnings,

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā mundhirūn

26:209

ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٠٩

and reminders. Never do We wrong anyone.

dhik'rā wamā kunnā ẓālimīn

26:210

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢١٠

No evil spirits have brought down [this Qur'Än]

wamā tanazzalat bihi l-shayāṭīn

26:211

وَمَا یَنۢبَغِی لَهُمۡ وَمَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٢١١

It is not for them [to do so], nor can they.

wamā yanbaghī lahum wamā yastaṭīʿūn

26:212

إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ ۝٢١٢

Indeed they are debarred even from hearing it.

innahum ʿani l-samʿi lamaʿzūlūn

26:213

فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٢١٣

Hence, do not invoke any other deity side by side with God, lest you find yourself among those suffering punishment.

falā tadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fatakūna mina l-muʿadhabīn

26:214

وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِیرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَ ۝٢١٤

And warn your nearest kindred,

wa-andhir ʿashīrataka l-aqrabīn

26:215

وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢١٥

and spread the wing of your tenderness over all of the believers who follow you.

wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka limani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn

26:216

فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢١٦

But if they disobey you, say: 'I am not accountable for what you do.'

fa-in ʿaṣawka faqul innī barīon mimmā taʿmalūn

26:217

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢١٧

Place your trust in the Almighty, the Compassionate

watawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi l-raḥīm

26:218

ٱلَّذِی یَرَىٰكَ حِینَ تَقُومُ ۝٢١٨

who sees you when you stand,

alladhī yarāka ḥīna taqūm

26:219

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِی ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢١٩

and [sees] your movement among those who prostrate themselves [before Him].

wataqallubaka fī l-sājidīn

26:220

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٢٢٠

It is He alone who hears all and knows all.

innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

26:221

هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢٢١

Shall I tell you upon whom it is that the satans descend?

hal unabbi-ukum ʿalā man tanazzalu l-shayāṭīn

26:222

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٢٢٢

They descend upon every lying sinner.

tanazzalu ʿalā kulli affākin athīmi

26:223

یُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٢٣

They eagerly listen, but most of them are liars.

yul'qūna l-samʿa wa-aktharuhum kādhibūn

26:224

وَٱلشُّعَرَاۤءُ یَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٢٢٤

As for the poets, only those who are lost in error follow them.

wal-shuʿarāu yattabiʿuhumu l-ghāwūn

26:225

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ وَادࣲ یَهِیمُونَ ۝٢٢٥

Are you not aware that they roam confusedly through all valleys,

alam tara annahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūn

26:226

وَأَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٢٢٦

and that they say what they do not do?

wa-annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūn

26:227

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَیَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ یَنقَلِبُونَ ۝٢٢٧

Excepted are those who believe, and do righteous deeds, and remember God often, and strive to be triumphant after they have been wronged. Those who are bent on wrongdoing will in time know what an evil turn their destiny will surely take.

illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wadhakarū l-laha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wasayaʿlamu alladhīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabin yanqalibūn
