1 The Prophet is consoled

۞ طسۤمۤ ۝١

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢

These are verses of the Book that makes things clear

til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-mubīn

لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣

Haply thou wilt grieve thyself to death because they believe not

laʿallaka bākhiʿun nafsaka allā yakūnū mu'minīn

إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ءَایَةࣰ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَـٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِینَ ۝٤

If WE please, WE can send down to them a Sign from the Heaven, so that their necks will bow down before it

in nasha nunazzil ʿalayhim mina l-samāi āyatan faẓallat aʿnāquhum lahā khāḍiʿīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٥

And there comes not to them a new reminder from the Gracious God, but they turn away from it

wamā yatīhim min dhik'rin mina l-raḥmāni muḥ'dathin illā kānū ʿanhu muʿ'riḍīn

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَیَأۡتِیهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰۤؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٦

They have, indeed, treated it as a lie but soon there will come to them the tidings of that at which they mocked

faqad kadhabū fasayatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝٧

See they not the earth, how many of every noble species have WE caused to grow therein

awalam yaraw ilā l-arḍi kam anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨

In that is a Sign indeed; but most of these would not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٩

And verily thy Lord - HE is the Mighty, the Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

2 Moses called and sent to Pharaoh

وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱئۡتِ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠

And call to mind when thy Lord called Moses, and directed him: `Go to the wrongdoing people

wa-idh nādā rabbuka mūsā ani i'ti l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ أَلَا یَتَّقُونَ ۝١١

`The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear God

qawma fir'ʿawna alā yattaqūn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُكَذِّبُونِ ۝١٢

He said, `My Lord, I fear that they will reject me

qāla rabbi innī akhāfu an yukadhibūn

وَیَضِیقُ صَدۡرِی وَلَا یَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِی فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ ۝١٣

`And my breast is not straitened and my tongue is not fluent; so send word to Aaron also

wayaḍīqu ṣadrī walā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa-arsil ilā hārūn

وَلَهُمۡ عَلَیَّ ذَنۢبࣱ فَأَخَافُ أَن یَقۡتُلُونِ ۝١٤

`And they have a charge against me, so I fear that they will kill me.

walahum ʿalayya dhanbun fa-akhāfu an yaqtulūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۖ فَٱذۡهَبَا بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝١٥

God said, `That shall not be, go both of you with Our Signs; We are with you hearing your prayers.

qāla kallā fa-idh'habā biāyātinā innā maʿakum mus'tamiʿūn

فَأۡتِیَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦

`So go to Pharaoh and say, `We are the Messengers of the Lord of the World

fatiyā fir'ʿawna faqūlā innā rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٧

`To tell thee to send the children of Israel with us.

an arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīl

قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِینَا وَلِیدࣰا وَلَبِثۡتَ فِینَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِینَ ۝١٨

Pharaoh said, `O Moses, did we not bring thee up among us as a child? And thou didst stay among us many years of thy life

qāla alam nurabbika fīnā walīdan walabith'ta fīnā min ʿumurika sinīn

وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِی فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٩

`And thou didst do that deed which thou didst, and thou art one of the ungrateful.

wafaʿalta faʿlataka allatī faʿalta wa-anta mina l-kāfirīn

قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَاۤ إِذࣰا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٢٠

Moses said, `I did it then inadvertently, and I was in a perplexed state of mind

qāla faʿaltuhā idhan wa-anā mina l-ḍālīn

فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِی رَبِّی حُكۡمࣰا وَجَعَلَنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٢١

`So I fled from you when I feared you; then my Lord granted me right judgment and made me one of the Messengers

fafarartu minkum lammā khif'tukum fawahaba lī rabbī ḥuk'man wajaʿalanī mina l-mur'salīn

وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةࣱ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَیَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٢٢

`And this favour of bringing me up as a child with which thou now tauntest me, dost thou put forward against thy having enslaved the Children of Israel?

watil'ka niʿ'matun tamunnuhā ʿalayya an ʿabbadtta banī is'rāīl

قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٣

Pharaoh said, `And what is the Lord of the worlds?

qāla fir'ʿawnu wamā rabbu l-ʿālamīn

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِینَ ۝٢٤

Moses said, `The Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between the two, if you would believe.

qāla rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīn

قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٢٥

Pharaoh said to those around him, `Do you not hear?

qāla liman ḥawlahu alā tastamiʿūn

قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٦

Moses said, `Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore.

qāla rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīn

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٢٧

Pharaoh said, `Most surely, this Messenger of yours who has been sent to you is a madman.

qāla inna rasūlakumu alladhī ur'sila ilaykum lamajnūnu

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨

Moses Said, `The Lord of the East and of the West, and of all that is between the two, if only you have sense.

qāla rabbu l-mashriqi wal-maghribi wamā baynahumā in kuntum taʿqilūn

قَالَ لَىِٕنِ ٱتَّخَذۡتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَیۡرِی لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسۡجُونِینَ ۝٢٩

`Pharaoh said, `If thou takest a god other than me, I will, certainly, put thee in prison.

qāla la-ini ittakhadhta ilāhan ghayrī la-ajʿalannaka mina l-masjūnīn

قَالَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَیۡءࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٣٠

Moses said, `What, even though I bring thee something that is manifest !

qāla awalaw ji'tuka bishayin mubīni

قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣١

Pharaoh said, `Bring it then, if thou speakest the truth.

qāla fati bihi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٣٢

So Moses threw down his rod, and behold ! it was a serpent plainly visible

fa-alqā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thuʿ'bānun mubīnu

وَنَزَعَ یَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِیَ بَیۡضَاۤءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝٣٣

And he drew out his hand, and lo ! it was white for the beholders

wanazaʿa yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍāu lilnnāẓirīn

3 Moses and Enchanters

قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٣٤

Pharaoh said to the chiefs around him, `This is surely a skillful sorcerer

qāla lil'mala-i ḥawlahu inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīmu

یُرِیدُ أَن یُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ ۝٣٥

`He seeks to turn you out of your land by his sorcery. Now, what do you advise?

yurīdu an yukh'rijakum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihi famādhā tamurūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٣٦

They said, `Put him off and his brother awhile and send into the cities summoners

qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-ib'ʿath fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

یَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٧

`Who should bring thee every skillful and cunning sorcerer.

yatūka bikulli saḥḥārin ʿalīmi

فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٣٨

So the sorcerers were assembled together at the appointed time on a fixed day

fajumiʿa l-saḥaratu limīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi

وَقِیلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٣٩

And it was said to the people, `Will you also gather together

waqīla lilnnāsi hal antum muj'tamiʿūn

لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤٠

`So we may follow the sorcerers if they are the winners?

laʿallanā nattabiʿu l-saḥarata in kānū humu l-ghālibīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَىِٕنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤١

And when the sorcerers came, they said to Pharaoh, `Shall we have a reward if we are the winners?

falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qālū lifir'ʿawna a-inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn

قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٢

He said, `Yes, and surely then you will be among my favourites.

qāla naʿam wa-innakum idhan lamina l-muqarabīn

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٤٣

Moses said to them, `Now throw you what you have to throw.

qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn

فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِیَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝٤٤

So they threw down their ropes and their rods and said, `By Pharaoh's honour, it is we who will surely win.

fa-alqaw ḥibālahum waʿiṣiyyahum waqālū biʿizzati fir'ʿawna innā lanaḥnu l-ghālibūn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝٤٥

Then Moses threw down his rod, and lo ! it swallowed up all that which they had fabricated

fa-alqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn

فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٤٦

Thereupon the sorcerers were impelled to fall down prostrate

fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn

قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٧

They said, `We believe in the Lord of the worlds

qālū āmannā birabbi l-ʿālamīn

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝٤٨

`The Lord of Moses and Aaron.

rabbi mūsā wahārūn

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٩

Pharaoh said, `You have believed in him before I gave you leave? He is surely your chief who has taught you sorcery. But you shall know the consequences thereof. I will most surely cut off your hands and your feet on account of your disobedience and I will most surely crucify you all.

qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra falasawfa taʿlamūna la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn

قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَیۡرَۖ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝٥٠

They said, `It can do us no harm; to our Lord shall WE return

qālū lā ḍayra innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَاۤ أَن كُنَّاۤ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥١

`We do hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, since we are the first among the believers.

innā naṭmaʿu an yaghfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwala l-mu'minīn

4 Moses delivered, Pharaoh drowned

۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۤ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ۝٥٢

And WE revealed to Moses, directing him, `Take away MY servants by night, you will surely be pursued.

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī innakum muttabaʿūn

فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٥٣

And Pharaoh sent summoners into the cities, announcing

fa-arsala fir'ʿawnu fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِیلُونَ ۝٥٤

`Theses are a small party

inna hāulāi lashir'dhimatun qalīlūn

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَاۤىِٕظُونَ ۝٥٥

`Yet they have offended us

wa-innahum lanā laghāiẓūn

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِیعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ ۝٥٦

`And we are a multitude fully prepared and vigilant.

wa-innā lajamīʿun ḥādhirūn

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٥٧

So WE turned them out of gardens and springs

fa-akhrajnāhum min jannātin waʿuyūni

وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٥٨

And treasures and an abode of honour

wakunūzin wamaqāmin karīmi

كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

Thus it was; and WE gave them as heritage to the children of Israel

kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā banī is'rāīl

فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِینَ ۝٦٠

And the host of Pharaoh pursued and overtook them at sunrise

fa-atbaʿūhum mush'riqīn

فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٰۤءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ ۝٦١

And when the two host came in sight of each other, the companions of Moses said, `We are surely caught.

falammā tarāā l-jamʿāni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamud'rakūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٦٢

`Never !' said he, `My Lord is with me; HE will guide me to safety.

qāla kallā inna maʿiya rabbī sayahdīn

فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٦٣

Then WE revealed to Moses: `Strike the sea with thy rod.' Thereupon it parted and every part looked like a huge mound

fa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-infalaqa fakāna kullu fir'qin kal-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīm

وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٤

And WE made the others approach nearer

wa-azlafnā thamma l-ākharīn

وَأَنجَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٦٥

And WE saved Moses and those who were with him

wa-anjaynā mūsā waman maʿahu ajmaʿīn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٦

Then WE drowned the others

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٧

In this, verily, there is a Sign; but most of these would not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

5 History of Abraham

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٦٨

And surely thy Lord - HE is the Mighty, the Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٦٩

And recite unto them the story of Abraham

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٠

When he said to his father and his people, What do you worship

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mā taʿbudūn

قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِینَ ۝٧١

They said, `We worship idols, and we shall continue to be devoted to them.

qālū naʿbudu aṣnāman fanaẓallu lahā ʿākifīn

قَالَ هَلۡ یَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ ۝٧٢

He said, `Do they hear you when you call on them

qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūn

أَوۡ یَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَضُرُّونَ ۝٧٣

`Or, do you good or harm you?

aw yanfaʿūnakum aw yaḍurrūn

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٤

They said, `Not so, but we found our fathers doing likewise.

qālū bal wajadnā ābāanā kadhālika yafʿalūn

قَالَ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٥

Abraham said, `Do you know that those you have been worshiping

qāla afara-aytum mā kuntum taʿbudūn

أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ ۝٧٦

`You and your fathers before you

antum waābāukumu l-aqdamūn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّیۤ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٧

`They are all enemies to me but it is the Lord of the worlds

fa-innahum ʿaduwwun lī illā rabba l-ʿālamīn

ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَنِی فَهُوَ یَهۡدِینِ ۝٧٨

`Who has created me, and it is HE Who guides me

alladhī khalaqanī fahuwa yahdīn

وَٱلَّذِی هُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِی وَیَسۡقِینِ ۝٧٩

`And Who gives me food and gives me drink

wa-alladhī huwa yuṭ'ʿimunī wayasqīn

وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ یَشۡفِینِ ۝٨٠

`And when I fall ill, it is HE who restores me to health

wa-idhā mariḍ'tu fahuwa yashfīn

وَٱلَّذِی یُمِیتُنِی ثُمَّ یُحۡیِینِ ۝٨١

`And Who will cause me to die, and then bring me to life again

wa-alladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥ'yīn

وَٱلَّذِیۤ أَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لِی خَطِیۤءَتِی یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٨٢

`And Who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Judgment

wa-alladhī aṭmaʿu an yaghfira lī khaṭīatī yawma l-dīn

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی حُكۡمࣰا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِی بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٣

`My Lord, bestow wisdom on me and join me with the righteous

rabbi hab lī ḥuk'man wa-alḥiq'nī bil-ṣāliḥīn

وَٱجۡعَل لِّی لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٨٤

`And grant me true and lasting reputation among posterity

wa-ij'ʿal lī lisāna ṣid'qin fī l-ākhirīn

وَٱجۡعَلۡنِی مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨٥

`And make me one of the heirs of the Garden of Bliss

wa-ij'ʿalnī min warathati jannati l-naʿīm

وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِیۤ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٨٦

`And forgive my father, for he is of the erring ones

wa-igh'fir li-abī innahu kāna mina l-ḍālīn

وَلَا تُخۡزِنِی یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٨٧

`And disgrace me not on the day when they will be raised up

walā tukh'zinī yawma yub'ʿathūn

یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ ۝٨٨

`The day when wealth and sons shall not avail

yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun walā banūn

إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

`Save him who comes to ALLAH with a sound heart.

illā man atā l-laha biqalbin salīmi

وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٩٠

And Heaven shall be brought near to the righteous

wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīn

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِیمُ لِلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٩١

And Hell shall be placed in full view to those who have gone astray

waburrizati l-jaḥīmu lil'ghāwīn

وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٩٢

And it will be said to them, `Where are those that you worshipped

waqīla lahum ayna mā kuntum taʿbudūn

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ یَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَنتَصِرُونَ ۝٩٣

`Beside ALLAH? Can they help you or help themselves?

min dūni l-lahi hal yanṣurūnakum aw yantaṣirūn

فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِیهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٩٤

Then will they be thrown headlong therein, they and those who have gone astray

fakub'kibū fīhā hum wal-ghāwūn

وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِیسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٩٥

And the Hosts of Iblis, all together

wajunūdu ib'līsa ajmaʿūn

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٩٦

They will say, whilst they dispute between themselves therein

qālū wahum fīhā yakhtaṣimūn

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٧

`By ALLAH, we were in manifest error

tal-lahi in kunnā lafī ḍalālin mubīni

إِذۡ نُسَوِّیكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٨

`When we held you as equal with the Lord of the worlds

idh nusawwīkum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

وَمَاۤ أَضَلَّنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٩٩

`And none led us astray but the guilty ones

wamā aḍallanā illā l-muj'rimūn

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِینَ ۝١٠٠

`And now we have no intercessors

famā lanā min shāfiʿīn

وَلَا صَدِیقٍ حَمِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

`Nor any warm friend

walā ṣadīqin ḥamīmi

فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٢

`Could we but return to the world, we would be among the believers !

falaw anna lanā karratan fanakūna mina l-mu'minīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

In this, verily, there is a Sign; but most of these would not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

And verily thy Lord - HE is the Mighty, the Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٠٥

The people of Noah treated the Messengers as liars

kadhabat qawmu nūḥin l-mur'salīn

6 History of Noah

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٠٦

When their brother Noah said to them, `Will you not be God-Fearing

idh qāla lahum akhūhum nūḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٠٧

`Surely I am unto you a Messenger, faithful to my trus

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٠٨

`So fear ALLAH and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٩

`And I ask you no reward for it. My reward is only with the Lord of the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١١٠

`So fear ALLAH and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

۞ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ ۝١١١

They said, `Shall we believe, in thee when it is the meanest of us who follow thee?

qālū anu'minu laka wa-ittabaʿaka l-ardhalūn

قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِی بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٢

He said, `And what knowledge have I as to what they have been doing

qāla wamā ʿil'mī bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّیۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١١٣

`Their account is only with my Lord, if you only knew

in ḥisābuhum illā ʿalā rabbī law tashʿurūn

وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٤

`And I am not going to drive away the believers

wamā anā biṭāridi l-mu'minīn

إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٥

`I am only a plain Warner.

in anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِینَ ۝١١٦

They said, `If thou desist not, O Noah, thou shalt surely be stoned to death.

qālū la-in lam tantahi yānūḥu latakūnanna mina l-marjūmīn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی كَذَّبُونِ ۝١١٧

He said, `My Lord, my people have treated me as a liar

qāla rabbi inna qawmī kadhabūn

فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰا وَنَجِّنِی وَمَن مَّعِیَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨

`Therefore judge Thou decisively between me and them; and save me and the believers that are with me.

fa-if'taḥ baynī wabaynahum fatḥan wanajjinī waman maʿiya mina l-mu'minīn

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١١٩

So WE saved him and those who were with him in the fully laden Ark

fa-anjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝١٢٠

Then WE drowned thereafter those who remained behind

thumma aghraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢١

In this, verily, there is a Sign; but most of them would not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

7 History of Hud

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٢٢

And verily thy Lord - HE is the Mighty, the Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٌ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

The tribe of Ad rejected the Messengers

kadhabat ʿādun l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

When their Brother Hud said to them, `Will you not fear God

idh qāla lahum akhūhum hūdun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٢٥

`Surely, I am unto you a Messenger, faithful to my trust

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٢٦

`So fear ALLAH and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢٧

`And I ask of you no reward for it. My reward is only with the Lord of the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِیعٍ ءَایَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ ۝١٢٨

`Do you build monuments on every high place, seeking vain glory

atabnūna bikulli rīʿin āyatan taʿbathūn

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ ۝١٢٩

`And do you erect palaces as if you will live for ever

watattakhidhūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum takhludūn

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ۝١٣٠

`And when you lay hands upon anyone, you lay hands as tyrants

wa-idhā baṭashtum baṭashtum jabbārīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٣١

`So fear ALLAH and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٢

`And fear HIM Who has helped you with all that you know

wa-ittaqū alladhī amaddakum bimā taʿlamūn

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٣٣

`He has helped you with cattle and sons

amaddakum bi-anʿāmin wabanīn

وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٣٤

`And gardens and springs

wajannātin waʿuyūni

إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥

`Indeed I fear for you the punishment of an awful day.

innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦

They said, `It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or whether thou be not of those who admonish

qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧

`This is nothing but the habit of the ancients

in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn

وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨

`And WE shall not be punished.

wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩

So they rejected him, and WE destroyed them. In that, indeed, there is a Sign, but most of these would not believe

fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠

And verily thy Lord - HE is the Mighty, the Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

8 History of Salih

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١

The tribe of Thamud also rejected the Messengers

kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢

When their brother Salih said to them, will you not guard against evil?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣

`Surely, I am unto you a Messenger, faithful to my trust

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٤٤

`So fear ALLAH and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٤٥

`And I ask of you no reward for it. My reward is only with the Lord of the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِی مَا هَـٰهُنَاۤ ءَامِنِینَ ۝١٤٦

`Do you think that you will be left secure amid the things that you have here

atut'rakūna fī mā hāhunā āminīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝١٤٧

`Amid gardens and springs

fī jannātin waʿuyūni

وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِیمࣱ ۝١٤٨

`And cornfields, and date-palms with heavy spathes near breaking

wazurūʿin wanakhlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmu

وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا فَـٰرِهِینَ ۝١٤٩

`And you hew out houses in the mountains, elated with your greatness

watanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan fārihīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٥٠

`So fear ALLAH and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَلَا تُطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٥١

`And obey not the bidding of those who exceed the bounds

walā tuṭīʿū amra l-mus'rifīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا یُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٢

`Who create disorder in the earth, and do not promote order and security.

alladhīna yuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi walā yuṣ'liḥūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٥٣

They said, `Thou art but one of the bewitched

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

مَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِءَایَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٤

`Thou art only a mortal like us. So bring a Sign, if thou art of the truthful.

mā anta illā basharun mith'lunā fati biāyatin in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝١٥٥

He said, `Here is a she-camel; she has her turn of drinking, and you have your turn of drinking on an appointed day

qāla hādhihi nāqatun lahā shir'bun walakum shir'bu yawmin maʿlūmi

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥٦

And touch her not with evil lest there overtake you the punishment of an awful day.

walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaẓīmi

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝١٥٧

But they hamstrung her; and then they became remorseful

faʿaqarūhā fa-aṣbaḥū nādimīn

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٨

So the punishment overtook them. In that verily there is a Sign, but most of these would not believe

fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٥٩

And surely thy Lord - HE is the Mighty, the Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

9 History of Lot

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٦٠

The people of Lot rejected the Messengers

kadhabat qawmu lūṭin l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦١

When their brother Lot said to them, `Will you not fear God

idh qāla lahum akhūhum lūṭun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٦٢

`Surely, I am unto you a Messenger, faithful to my trust

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٦٣

`So fear ALLAH and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٤

`And I ask of you no reward for it. My reward is only with the Lord of the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلذُّكۡرَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٥

`Do you, of all creatures, come to males

atatūna l-dhuk'rāna mina l-ʿālamīn

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ ۝١٦٦

And leave your wives whom your Lord created for you? Nay, you are a people who transgress all limits.

watadharūna mā khalaqa lakum rabbukum min azwājikum bal antum qawmun ʿādūn

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝١٦٧

They said, `If thou desist not, O Lot, thou wilt surely be banished.

qālū la-in lam tantahi yālūṭu latakūnanna mina l-mukh'rajīn

قَالَ إِنِّی لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِینَ ۝١٦٨

He said, `Certainly I hate your conduct.

qāla innī liʿamalikum mina l-qālīn

رَبِّ نَجِّنِی وَأَهۡلِی مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٩

`My Lord, save me and my family from what they do.

rabbi najjinī wa-ahlī mimmā yaʿmalūn

فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٧٠

So WE saved him and his family, all of them

fanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٧١

Save an old woman, among those who stayed behind

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٧٢

Then we destroyed the others

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَسَاۤءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٣

And WE rained upon them a rain; and evil was the rain that descended upon those who were warned

wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fasāa maṭaru l-mundharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٤

In that, verily, there is a Sign; but most of these would not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٧٥

And surely thy Lord - HE is the Mighty, the Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

10 History of Shu'aib

كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ لۡءَیۡكَةِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧٦

The people of the Wood rejected the Messengers

kadhaba aṣḥābu al'aykati l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧٧

When Shu'aib said to them, `Will you not fear God

idh qāla lahum shuʿaybun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٧٨

`Surely, I am unto you a Messenger, faithful to my trust

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٧٩

`So fear ALLAH and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٠

`And I ask of you no reward for it. My reward is with the Lord of the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

۞ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡسِرِینَ ۝١٨١

Give full measure, and be not of those who give less

awfū l-kayla walā takūnū mina l-mukh'sirīn

وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمِ ۝١٨٢

`And weigh with a true balance

wazinū bil-qis'ṭāsi l-mus'taqīm

وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٨٣

`And diminish not unto people their things, nor go about the earth, creating disorder

walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٨٤

`And fear HIM Who created you and the earlier peoples.

wa-ittaqū alladhī khalaqakum wal-jibilata l-awalīn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٨٥

They said, `Thou art but a bewitched person

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

وَمَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝١٨٦

`And thou art only a mortal like us, and we believe thee to be a liar

wamā anta illā basharun mith'lunā wa-in naẓunnuka lamina l-kādhibīn

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا كِسَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٧

`So cause fragments of the sky to fall on us, if thou art truthful.

fa-asqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina l-samāi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ رَبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٨

He said, `My Lord knows best what you do.

qāla rabbī aʿlamu bimā taʿmalūn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٨٩

So they rejected him. Then the punishment of the day of overshadowing gloom overtook them. That was indeed the punishment of a dreadful day

fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahum ʿadhābu yawmi l-ẓulati innahu kāna ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٠

In that, verily, there is a Sign; but most of these would not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٩١

And surely thy Lord - HE is the Mighty, the Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

11 Prophet's Opponents warned

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِیلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٩٢

And verily this Qur'an is a revelation from the Lord of all the worlds

wa-innahu latanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِینُ ۝١٩٣

The Spirit, faithful to the trust, has descended with i

nazala bihi l-rūḥu l-amīn

عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِینَ ۝١٩٤

On thy heart, that thou mayest be a Warner

bilisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīni

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیࣲّ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٩٥

In plain and clear Arabic tongue

Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِی زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٩٦

And it is surely mentioned in the scriptures of the former peoples

wa-innahu lafī zuburi l-awalīn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَایَةً أَن یَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰۤؤُا۟ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٩٧

And is it not a sufficient Sign for them that the learned among the Children of Israel know it

awalam yakun lahum āyatan an yaʿlamahu ʿulamāu banī is'rāīl

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِینَ ۝١٩٨

And if WE had sent it down to one of the non-Arabs

walaw nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-aʿjamīn

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٩

And he had read it to them, they would never have believed in it

faqara-ahu ʿalayhim mā kānū bihi mu'minīn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٢٠٠

Thus have WE caused disbelief to enter into the hearts of the sinful

kadhālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn

لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٢٠١

They will not believe in it until they see the grievous punishment

lā yu'minūna bihi ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

فَیَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٠٢

Which will come upon them suddenly, while they are not aware of it

fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

فَیَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ۝٢٠٣

And they will say, `Shall we be respited?

fayaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٢٠٤

What ! do they seek to hasten OUR punishment

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِینَ ۝٢٠٥

What thinkest thou that if WE let them enjoy the good things of this world for years

afara-ayta in mattaʿnāhum sinīn

ثُمَّ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٠٦

Then there comes to them the punishment that they are promised

thumma jāahum mā kānū yūʿadūn

مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُمَتَّعُونَ ۝٢٠٧

Of what avail will be to them that which they were allowed to enjoy

mā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨

And never did WE destroy any township but it had its Warners

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā mundhirūn

ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٠٩

So that they may be admonished; and WE are not unjust

dhik'rā wamā kunnā ẓālimīn

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢١٠

And the evil ones have not brought it down

wamā tanazzalat bihi l-shayāṭīn

وَمَا یَنۢبَغِی لَهُمۡ وَمَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٢١١

It does neither suit them nor have they the power to produce it

wamā yanbaghī lahum wamā yastaṭīʿūn

إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ ۝٢١٢

Surely, they are debarred from listening to the Divine Word

innahum ʿani l-samʿi lamaʿzūlūn

فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٢١٣

Call not, therefore, on any other god beside ALLAH, lest thou become one of those who are punished

falā tadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fatakūna mina l-muʿadhabīn

وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِیرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَ ۝٢١٤

And warn thy nearest kinsmen

wa-andhir ʿashīrataka l-aqrabīn

وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢١٥

And lower thy wing of mercy to the believers who follow thee

wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka limani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn

فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢١٦

Then if they disobey thee, say, `I repudiate all connection with what you do.

fa-in ʿaṣawka faqul innī barīon mimmā taʿmalūn

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢١٧

And put thy trust in the Mighty, the Merciful

watawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi l-raḥīm

ٱلَّذِی یَرَىٰكَ حِینَ تَقُومُ ۝٢١٨

Who sees thee when thou standest in Prayer

alladhī yarāka ḥīna taqūm

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِی ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢١٩

And Who sees thy movements among those who prostrate themselves before ALLAH

wataqallubaka fī l-sājidīn

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٢٢٠

HE is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing

innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢٢١

Shall I inform you on whom the evil ones descend

hal unabbi-ukum ʿalā man tanazzalu l-shayāṭīn

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٢٢٢

They descend on every lying sinner

tanazzalu ʿalā kulli affākin athīmi

یُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٢٣

They strain their ears towards heaven, and most of them are liars

yul'qūna l-samʿa wa-aktharuhum kādhibūn

وَٱلشُّعَرَاۤءُ یَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٢٢٤

And as for the poets - it is the erring ones who follow them

wal-shuʿarāu yattabiʿuhumu l-ghāwūn

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ وَادࣲ یَهِیمُونَ ۝٢٢٥

Dost thou not see how they wonder aimlessly in every valley

alam tara annahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūn

وَأَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٢٢٦

And that they say what they do not

wa-annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūn

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَیَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ یَنقَلِبُونَ ۝٢٢٧

Save those who believe and do righteous deeds, and remember ALLAH much, and defend themselves after they are wronged. And the wrongdoers shall soon know to what place of return they shall return

illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wadhakarū l-laha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wasayaʿlamu alladhīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabin yanqalibūn
