1 The Prophet is consoled

۞ طسۤمۤ ۝١

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢

These are the signs of the perspicuous book

til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-mubīn

لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣

Peradventure thou afflictest thy self unto death, lest the Meccans become not true believers

laʿallaka bākhiʿun nafsaka allā yakūnū mu'minīn

إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ءَایَةࣰ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَـٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِینَ ۝٤

If We pleased, We could send down unto them a convincing sign from heaven, unto which their necks would humbly submit

in nasha nunazzil ʿalayhim mina l-samāi āyatan faẓallat aʿnāquhum lahā khāḍiʿīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٥

But where cometh unto them no admonition from the Merciful, being newly revealed as occasions require, but they turn aside from the same

wamā yatīhim min dhik'rin mina l-raḥmāni muḥ'dathin illā kānū ʿanhu muʿ'riḍīn

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَیَأۡتِیهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰۤؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٦

and they have charged it with falsehood: But a message shall come unto them, which they shall not laugh to scorn

faqad kadhabū fasayatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝٧

Do they not behold the earth, how many vegetables We cause to spring up therein, of every noble species

awalam yaraw ilā l-arḍi kam anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨

Verily herein is a sign: But the greater part of them do not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٩

Verily thy Lord is the mighty, the merciful God

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

2 Moses called and sent to Pharaoh

وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱئۡتِ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠

Remember when thy Lord called Moses, saying, go to the unjust people

wa-idh nādā rabbuka mūsā ani i'ti l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ أَلَا یَتَّقُونَ ۝١١

the people of Pharaoh; will they not dread Me

qawma fir'ʿawna alā yattaqūn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُكَذِّبُونِ ۝١٢

Moses answered, O Lord, verily I fear lest they accuse me of falsehood

qāla rabbi innī akhāfu an yukadhibūn

وَیَضِیقُ صَدۡرِی وَلَا یَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِی فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ ۝١٣

and lest my breast become straitened, and my tongue be not ready in speaking: Send therefore unto Aaron, to be my assistant

wayaḍīqu ṣadrī walā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa-arsil ilā hārūn

وَلَهُمۡ عَلَیَّ ذَنۢبࣱ فَأَخَافُ أَن یَقۡتُلُونِ ۝١٤

Also they have a crime to object against me; and I fear they will put me to death

walahum ʿalayya dhanbun fa-akhāfu an yaqtulūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۖ فَٱذۡهَبَا بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝١٥

God said, they shall by no means put thee to death: Wherefore go ye with our signs; for We will be with you, and will hear what passes between you and them

qāla kallā fa-idh'habā biāyātinā innā maʿakum mus'tamiʿūn

فَأۡتِیَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦

Go ye therefore unto Pharaoh, and say, verily we are the apostle of the Lord of all creatures

fatiyā fir'ʿawna faqūlā innā rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٧

Send away with us the children of Israel

an arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīl

قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِینَا وَلِیدࣰا وَلَبِثۡتَ فِینَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِینَ ۝١٨

And when they had delivered their message, Pharaoh answered, have we not brought thee up among us, when a child; and hast thou not dwelt among us for several years of thy life

qāla alam nurabbika fīnā walīdan walabith'ta fīnā min ʿumurika sinīn

وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِی فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٩

Yet hast thou done thy deed which thou hast done: And thou art an ungrateful person

wafaʿalta faʿlataka allatī faʿalta wa-anta mina l-kāfirīn

قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَاۤ إِذࣰا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٢٠

Moses replied, I did it indeed, and I was one of those who erred

qāla faʿaltuhā idhan wa-anā mina l-ḍālīn

فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِی رَبِّی حُكۡمࣰا وَجَعَلَنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٢١

wherefore I fled from you, because I feared you: But my Lord hath bestowed on me wisdom, and hath appointed me one of his apostles

fafarartu minkum lammā khif'tukum fawahaba lī rabbī ḥuk'man wajaʿalanī mina l-mur'salīn

وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةࣱ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَیَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٢٢

And this is the favour which thou hast bestowed on me, that thou hast enslaved the children of Israel

watil'ka niʿ'matun tamunnuhā ʿalayya an ʿabbadtta banī is'rāīl

قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٣

Pharaoh said, and who is the Lord of all creatures

qāla fir'ʿawnu wamā rabbu l-ʿālamīn

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِینَ ۝٢٤

Moses answered, the Lord of heaven and earth, and of whatever is between them: If ye are men of sagacity

qāla rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīn

قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٢٥

Pharaoh said unto those who were about him, do ye not hear

qāla liman ḥawlahu alā tastamiʿūn

قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٦

Moses said, your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers

qāla rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīn

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٢٧

Pharaoh said unto those who were present, your apostle, who is sent unto you, is certainly distracted

qāla inna rasūlakumu alladhī ur'sila ilaykum lamajnūnu

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨

Moses said, the Lord of the east, and of the west, and of whatever is between them; if ye are men of understanding

qāla rabbu l-mashriqi wal-maghribi wamā baynahumā in kuntum taʿqilūn

قَالَ لَىِٕنِ ٱتَّخَذۡتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَیۡرِی لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسۡجُونِینَ ۝٢٩

Pharaoh said unto him, verily if thou take any god besides me, I will make thee one of those who are imprisoned

qāla la-ini ittakhadhta ilāhan ghayrī la-ajʿalannaka mina l-masjūnīn

قَالَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَیۡءࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٣٠

Moses answered, what, although I come unto you with a convincing miracle

qāla awalaw ji'tuka bishayin mubīni

قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣١

Pharaoh replied, produce it therefore, if thou speakest truth

qāla fati bihi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٣٢

And he cast down his rod, and behold, it became a visible serpent

fa-alqā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thuʿ'bānun mubīnu

وَنَزَعَ یَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِیَ بَیۡضَاۤءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝٣٣

And he drew forth his hand out of his bosom; and behold, it appeared, white unto the spectators

wanazaʿa yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍāu lilnnāẓirīn

3 Moses and Enchanters

قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٣٤

Pharahoh said unto the princes who were about him, verily this man is a skilful magician

qāla lil'mala-i ḥawlahu inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīmu

یُرِیدُ أَن یُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ ۝٣٥

He seeketh to dispossess you of your land by his sorcery; what therefore do ye direct

yurīdu an yukh'rijakum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihi famādhā tamurūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٣٦

They answered, delay him, and his brother by good words for a time; and send through the cities men to assembl

qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-ib'ʿath fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

یَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٧

and bring unto thee every skilful magician

yatūka bikulli saḥḥārin ʿalīmi

فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٣٨

So the magicians were assembled at an appointed time, on a solemn day

fajumiʿa l-saḥaratu limīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi

وَقِیلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٣٩

And it was said unto the people, are ye assembled together

waqīla lilnnāsi hal antum muj'tamiʿūn

لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤٠

Perhaps we may follow the magicians, if they do get the victory

laʿallanā nattabiʿu l-saḥarata in kānū humu l-ghālibīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَىِٕنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤١

And when the magicians were come, they said unto Pharaoh, shall we certainly receive a reward, if we do get the victory

falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qālū lifir'ʿawna a-inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn

قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٢

He answered, yea; and ye shall surely be of those who approach my person

qāla naʿam wa-innakum idhan lamina l-muqarabīn

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٤٣

Moses said unto them, cast down what ye are about to cast down

qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn

فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِیَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝٤٤

Wherefore they cast down their ropes and their rods, and said, by the might of Pharaoh, verily we shall be the conquerors

fa-alqaw ḥibālahum waʿiṣiyyahum waqālū biʿizzati fir'ʿawna innā lanaḥnu l-ghālibūn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝٤٥

And Moses cast down his rod, and behold, it swallowed up that which they had caused falsely to appear changed into serpents

fa-alqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn

فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٤٦

Whereupon the magicians prostrated themselves, worshipping

fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn

قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٧

and said, we believe in the Lord of all creatures

qālū āmannā birabbi l-ʿālamīn

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝٤٨

the Lord of Moses and of Aaron

rabbi mūsā wahārūn

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٩

Pharaoh said unto them, have ye believed on him, before I have given you permission? Verily he is your chief, who hath taught you magic: But hereafter ye shall surely know my power. I will cut off your hands and your feet, on the opposite sides, and I will crucify you all

qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra falasawfa taʿlamūna la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn

قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَیۡرَۖ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝٥٠

They answered, it will be no harm unto us; for we shall return unto our Lord

qālū lā ḍayra innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَاۤ أَن كُنَّاۤ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥١

We hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, since we are the first who have believed

innā naṭmaʿu an yaghfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwala l-mu'minīn

4 Moses delivered, Pharaoh drowned

۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۤ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ۝٥٢

And we spake by revelation unto Moses, saying, march forth with my servants by night; for ye will be pursued

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī innakum muttabaʿūn

فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٥٣

And Pharaoh sent officers through the cities to assemble forces, saying

fa-arsala fir'ʿawnu fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِیلُونَ ۝٥٤

verily these are a small company

inna hāulāi lashir'dhimatun qalīlūn

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَاۤىِٕظُونَ ۝٥٥

and they are enraged against us

wa-innahum lanā laghāiẓūn

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِیعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ ۝٥٦

But we are a multitude well provided

wa-innā lajamīʿun ḥādhirūn

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٥٧

So we caused them to quit their gardens, and fountains

fa-akhrajnāhum min jannātin waʿuyūni

وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٥٨

and treasures, and fair dwellings

wakunūzin wamaqāmin karīmi

كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

Thus did We do; and We made the children of Israel to inherit the same

kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā banī is'rāīl

فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِینَ ۝٦٠

And they pursued them at sun-rise

fa-atbaʿūhum mush'riqīn

فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٰۤءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ ۝٦١

And when the two armies were come in sight of each other, the companions of Moses said, we shall surely be overtaken

falammā tarāā l-jamʿāni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamud'rakūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٦٢

Moses answered, by no means: For my Lord is with me, Who will surely direct me

qāla kallā inna maʿiya rabbī sayahdīn

فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٦٣

And We commanded Moses by revelation, saying, smite the sea with thy rod. And when he had smitten it, it became divided into twelve parts, between which were as many paths, and every part was like a vast mountain

fa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-infalaqa fakāna kullu fir'qin kal-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīm

وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٤

And We drew thither the others

wa-azlafnā thamma l-ākharīn

وَأَنجَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٦٥

and We delivered Moses and all those who were with him

wa-anjaynā mūsā waman maʿahu ajmaʿīn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٦

Then We drowned the others

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٧

Verily herein was a sign; but the greater part of them did not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

5 History of Abraham

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٦٨

Verily thy Lord is the mighty, and the merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٦٩

And rehearse unto them the story of Abraham

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٠

When he said unto his father, and his people, what do ye worship

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mā taʿbudūn

قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِینَ ۝٧١

They answered, we worship idols; and we constantly serve them all the day long

qālū naʿbudu aṣnāman fanaẓallu lahā ʿākifīn

قَالَ هَلۡ یَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ ۝٧٢

Abraham said, do they hear you, when ye invoke them

qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūn

أَوۡ یَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَضُرُّونَ ۝٧٣

Or do they either profit you, or hurt you

aw yanfaʿūnakum aw yaḍurrūn

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٤

They answered, but we found our fathers do the same

qālū bal wajadnā ābāanā kadhālika yafʿalūn

قَالَ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٥

He said, what think ye? The gods which ye worship

qāla afara-aytum mā kuntum taʿbudūn

أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ ۝٧٦

and your forefathers worshipped

antum waābāukumu l-aqdamūn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّیۤ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٧

are my enemy: Except only the Lord of all creatures

fa-innahum ʿaduwwun lī illā rabba l-ʿālamīn

ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَنِی فَهُوَ یَهۡدِینِ ۝٧٨

who hath created me, and directeth me

alladhī khalaqanī fahuwa yahdīn

وَٱلَّذِی هُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِی وَیَسۡقِینِ ۝٧٩

and who giveth me to eat, and to drink

wa-alladhī huwa yuṭ'ʿimunī wayasqīn

وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ یَشۡفِینِ ۝٨٠

and when I am sick, healeth me

wa-idhā mariḍ'tu fahuwa yashfīn

وَٱلَّذِی یُمِیتُنِی ثُمَّ یُحۡیِینِ ۝٨١

and Who will cause me to die, and will afterwards restore me to life

wa-alladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥ'yīn

وَٱلَّذِیۤ أَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لِی خَطِیۤءَتِی یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٨٢

and Who, I hope, will forgive my sins on the day of judgment

wa-alladhī aṭmaʿu an yaghfira lī khaṭīatī yawma l-dīn

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی حُكۡمࣰا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِی بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٣

O Lord, grant me wisdom; and join me with the righteous

rabbi hab lī ḥuk'man wa-alḥiq'nī bil-ṣāliḥīn

وَٱجۡعَل لِّی لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٨٤

And grant that I may be spoken of with honour among the latest posterity

wa-ij'ʿal lī lisāna ṣid'qin fī l-ākhirīn

وَٱجۡعَلۡنِی مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨٥

and make me an heir of the garden of delight

wa-ij'ʿalnī min warathati jannati l-naʿīm

وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِیۤ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٨٦

And forgive my father, for that he hath been one of those who go astray

wa-igh'fir li-abī innahu kāna mina l-ḍālīn

وَلَا تُخۡزِنِی یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٨٧

And cover me not with shame on the day of resurrection

walā tukh'zinī yawma yub'ʿathūn

یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ ۝٨٨

on the day in which neither riches nor children shall avail

yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun walā banūn

إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

unless unto him who shall come unto God with a sincere heart

illā man atā l-laha biqalbin salīmi

وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٩٠

When paradise shall be brought near to the view of the pious

wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīn

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِیمُ لِلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٩١

and hell shall appear plainly to those who shall have erred

waburrizati l-jaḥīmu lil'ghāwīn

وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٩٢

and it shall be said unto them, where are your deities which ye serve

waqīla lahum ayna mā kuntum taʿbudūn

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ یَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَنتَصِرُونَ ۝٩٣

besides God? Will they deliver you from punishment, or will they deliver themselves

min dūni l-lahi hal yanṣurūnakum aw yantaṣirūn

فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِیهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٩٤

And they shall be cast into the same, both they, and those who have been seduced to their worship

fakub'kibū fīhā hum wal-ghāwūn

وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِیسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٩٥

and all the host of Eblis

wajunūdu ib'līsa ajmaʿūn

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٩٦

The seduced shall dispute therein with their false gods, saying

qālū wahum fīhā yakhtaṣimūn

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٧

by God, we were in a manifest error

tal-lahi in kunnā lafī ḍalālin mubīni

إِذۡ نُسَوِّیكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٨

when we equalled you with the Lord of all creatures

idh nusawwīkum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

وَمَاۤ أَضَلَّنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٩٩

And none seduced us but the wicked

wamā aḍallanā illā l-muj'rimūn

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِینَ ۝١٠٠

We have now no intercessors

famā lanā min shāfiʿīn

وَلَا صَدِیقٍ حَمِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

nor any friend who careth for us

walā ṣadīqin ḥamīmi

فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٢

If we were allowed to return once more into the world, we would certainly become true believers

falaw anna lanā karratan fanakūna mina l-mu'minīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

Verily herein was a sign: But the greater part of them believed not

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

Thy Lord is the mighty, the merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٠٥

The people of Noah accused God's messengers of imposture

kadhabat qawmu nūḥin l-mur'salīn

6 History of Noah

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٠٦

When their brother Noah said unto them, will ye not fear God

idh qāla lahum akhūhum nūḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٠٧

Verily I am a faithful messenger unto you

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٠٨

wherefore fear God, and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٩

I ask no reward of you for my preaching unto you; I expect my reward from no other than the Lord of all creatures

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١١٠

Wherefore fear God, and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

۞ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ ۝١١١

They answered, shall we believe on thee, when only the most abject persons have followed thee

qālū anu'minu laka wa-ittabaʿaka l-ardhalūn

قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِی بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٢

Noah said, I have no knowledge of that which they did

qāla wamā ʿil'mī bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّیۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١١٣

it appertaineth unto my Lord alone to bring them to account, if ye understand

in ḥisābuhum illā ʿalā rabbī law tashʿurūn

وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٤

wherefore I will not drive away the believers

wamā anā biṭāridi l-mu'minīn

إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٥

I am no more than a public preacher

in anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِینَ ۝١١٦

They replied, assuredly, unless thou desist, O Noah, thou shalt be stoned

qālū la-in lam tantahi yānūḥu latakūnanna mina l-marjūmīn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی كَذَّبُونِ ۝١١٧

He said, O Lord, verily my people take me for a liar

qāla rabbi inna qawmī kadhabūn

فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰا وَنَجِّنِی وَمَن مَّعِیَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨

Wherefore judge publicly between me and them; and deliver me and the true believers who are with me

fa-if'taḥ baynī wabaynahum fatḥan wanajjinī waman maʿiya mina l-mu'minīn

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١١٩

Wherefore We delivered him, and those who were with him, in the ark filled with men and animals

fa-anjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝١٢٠

and afterwards We drowned the rest

thumma aghraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢١

Verily herein was a sign: But the greater part of them believed not

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

7 History of Hud

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٢٢

Thy Lord is the mighty, the merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٌ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

The tribe of Ad charged God's messengers with falsehood

kadhabat ʿādun l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

When their brother Hud said unto them, will ye not fear God

idh qāla lahum akhūhum hūdun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٢٥

Verily I am a faithful messenger unto you

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٢٦

wherefore fear God, and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢٧

I demand not of you any reward for my preaching unto you: I expect my reward from no other than the Lord of all creatures

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِیعٍ ءَایَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ ۝١٢٨

Do ye build a land-mark on every high place, to divert yourselves

atabnūna bikulli rīʿin āyatan taʿbathūn

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ ۝١٢٩

And do ye erect maginificent works, hoping that ye may continue in their possession for ever

watattakhidhūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum takhludūn

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ۝١٣٠

And when ye exercise your power, do ye exercise it with cruelty and rigour

wa-idhā baṭashtum baṭashtum jabbārīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٣١

Fear God, by leaving these things; and obey Me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٢

And fear Him who hath bestowed on you that which ye know

wa-ittaqū alladhī amaddakum bimā taʿlamūn

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٣٣

He hath bestowed on you cattle, and children

amaddakum bi-anʿāmin wabanīn

وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٣٤

and gardens, and springs of water

wajannātin waʿuyūni

إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥

Verily I fear for you the punishment of a grievous day

innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦

They answered, it is equal unto us whether thou admonish us, or dost not admonish us

qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧

This which thou preachest is only a device of the ancients

in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn

وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨

neither shall we be punished for what we have done

wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩

And they accused him of imposture: Wherefore We destroyed them. Verily herein was a sign: But the greater part of them believed not

fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠

Thy Lord is the mighty, the merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

8 History of Salih

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١

The tribe of Thamud also charged the messengers of God with falsehood

kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢

When their brother Saleh said unto them, will ye not fear God

idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣

Verily I am a faithful messenger unto you

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٤٤

Wherefore fear God, and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٤٥

I demand no reward of you for my preaching unto you; I expect my reward from no other than the Lord of all creatures

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِی مَا هَـٰهُنَاۤ ءَامِنِینَ ۝١٤٦

Shall ye be left for ever secure in the possession of the things which are here

atut'rakūna fī mā hāhunā āminīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝١٤٧

among gardens, and fountains

fī jannātin waʿuyūni

وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِیمࣱ ۝١٤٨

and corn, and palm-trees, whose branches sheathe their flowers

wazurūʿin wanakhlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmu

وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا فَـٰرِهِینَ ۝١٤٩

And will ye continue to cut habitations for your selves out of the mountains, behaving with insolence

watanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan fārihīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٥٠

Fear God, and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَلَا تُطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٥١

and obey not the command of the transgressors

walā tuṭīʿū amra l-mus'rifīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا یُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٢

who act corruptly in the earth, and reform not the same

alladhīna yuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi walā yuṣ'liḥūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٥٣

They answered, verily thou art distracted

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

مَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِءَایَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٤

Thou art no other than a man like unto us: Produce now some sign, if thou speakest truth

mā anta illā basharun mith'lunā fati biāyatin in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝١٥٥

Saleh said, this she-camel shall be a sign unto you: She shall have her portion of water, and ye shall have your portion of water alternately, on a several day appointed for you

qāla hādhihi nāqatun lahā shir'bun walakum shir'bu yawmin maʿlūmi

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥٦

and do her no hurt, lest the punishment of a terrible day be inflicted on you

walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaẓīmi

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝١٥٧

But they slew her; and were made to repent of their impiety

faʿaqarūhā fa-aṣbaḥū nādimīn

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٨

For the punishment which had been threatened overtook them. Verily herein was a sign; but the greater part of them did not believe

fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٥٩

Thy Lord is the mighty, the merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

9 History of Lot

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٦٠

The people of Lot likewise accused God's messengers of imposture

kadhabat qawmu lūṭin l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦١

When their brother Lot said unto them, will ye not fear God

idh qāla lahum akhūhum lūṭun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٦٢

Verily I am a faithful messenger unto you

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٦٣

Wherefore fear God, and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٤

أَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلذُّكۡرَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٥

Do ye approach unto the males among mankind

atatūna l-dhuk'rāna mina l-ʿālamīn

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ ۝١٦٦

and leave your wives which your Lord hath created for you? Surely ye are people who transgress

watadharūna mā khalaqa lakum rabbukum min azwājikum bal antum qawmun ʿādūn

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝١٦٧

They answered, unless thou desist, O Lot, thou shalt certainly be expelled our city

qālū la-in lam tantahi yālūṭu latakūnanna mina l-mukh'rajīn

قَالَ إِنِّی لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِینَ ۝١٦٨

He said, verily I am one of those who abhor your doings

qāla innī liʿamalikum mina l-qālīn

رَبِّ نَجِّنِی وَأَهۡلِی مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٩

O Lord, deliver me, and my family, from that which they act

rabbi najjinī wa-ahlī mimmā yaʿmalūn

فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٧٠

Wherefore We delivered him, and all his family

fanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٧١

except an old woman, his wife, who perished among those who remained behind

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٧٢

Then We destroyed the rest

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَسَاۤءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٣

and We rained on them a shower of stones; and terrible was the shower which fell on those who had been warned in vain

wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fasāa maṭaru l-mundharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٤

Verily herein was a sign; but the greater part of them did not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٧٥

Thy Lord is the mighty, the merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

10 History of Shu'aib

كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ لۡءَیۡكَةِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧٦

The inhabitants of the wood also accused God's messengers of imposture

kadhaba aṣḥābu al'aykati l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧٧

When Shoaib said unto them, will ye not fear God

idh qāla lahum shuʿaybun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٧٨

Verily I am a faithful messenger unto you

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٧٩

Wherefore fear God, and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٠

I ask no reward of you for my preaching: I expect my reward from no other than the Lord of all creatures

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

۞ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡسِرِینَ ۝١٨١

Give just measure, and be not defrauders

awfū l-kayla walā takūnū mina l-mukh'sirīn

وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمِ ۝١٨٢

and weigh with an equal balance

wazinū bil-qis'ṭāsi l-mus'taqīm

وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٨٣

and diminish not unto men ought of their matters; neither commit violence in the earth, acting corruptly

walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٨٤

And fear him who hath created you, and also the former generations

wa-ittaqū alladhī khalaqakum wal-jibilata l-awalīn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٨٥

They answered, certainly thou art distracted

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

وَمَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝١٨٦

Thou art no more than a man, like unto us; and we do surely esteem thee to be a liar

wamā anta illā basharun mith'lunā wa-in naẓunnuka lamina l-kādhibīn

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا كِسَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٧

Cause now a part of the heaven to fall upon us, if thou speakest truth

fa-asqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina l-samāi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ رَبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٨

Shoaib said, my Lord best knoweth that which ye do

qāla rabbī aʿlamu bimā taʿmalūn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٨٩

And they charged him with falsehood: Wherefore the punishment of the day of the shadowing cloud overtook them; and this was the punishment of a grievous day

fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahum ʿadhābu yawmi l-ẓulati innahu kāna ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٠

Verily herein was a sign; but the greater part of them did not believe

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٩١

Thy Lord is the mighty, the merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

11 Prophet's Opponents warned

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِیلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٩٢

This book is certainly a revelation from the Lord of all creatures

wa-innahu latanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِینُ ۝١٩٣

which the faithful spirit hath caused to descen

nazala bihi l-rūḥu l-amīn

عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِینَ ۝١٩٤

upon thy heart, that thou mightest be a preacher to thy prople

bilisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīni

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیࣲّ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٩٥

in the perspicuous Arabic tongue

Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِی زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٩٦

And it is born witness to in the scriptures of former ages

wa-innahu lafī zuburi l-awalīn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَایَةً أَن یَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰۤؤُا۟ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٩٧

Was it not a sign unto them, that the wise men among the children of Israel knew it

awalam yakun lahum āyatan an yaʿlamahu ʿulamāu banī is'rāīl

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِینَ ۝١٩٨

Had We revealed it unto any of the foreigners

walaw nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-aʿjamīn

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٩

and he had read the same unto them, yet they would not have believed therein

faqara-ahu ʿalayhim mā kānū bihi mu'minīn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٢٠٠

Thus have We caused obstinate infidelity to enter the hearts of the wicked

kadhālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn

لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٢٠١

They shall not believe therein, until they see a painful punishment

lā yu'minūna bihi ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

فَیَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٠٢

It shall come suddenly upon them, and they shall not foresee it

fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

فَیَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ۝٢٠٣

And they shall say, shall we be respited

fayaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٢٠٤

Do they therefore desire our punishment to be hastened

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِینَ ۝٢٠٥

What thinkest thou? If We suffer them to enjoy the advantage of this life for several years

afara-ayta in mattaʿnāhum sinīn

ثُمَّ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٠٦

and afterwards that with which they are threatened come upon them

thumma jāahum mā kānū yūʿadūn

مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُمَتَّعُونَ ۝٢٠٧

what will that which they have enjoyed profit them

mā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨

We have destroyed no city, but preachers were first sent unto it

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā mundhirūn

ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٠٩

to admonish the inhabitants thereof; neither did We treat them unjustly

dhik'rā wamā kunnā ẓālimīn

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢١٠

The devils did not descend with the Koran, as the infidels give out

wamā tanazzalat bihi l-shayāṭīn

وَمَا یَنۢبَغِی لَهُمۡ وَمَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٢١١

It is not for their purpose, neither are they able to produce such a book

wamā yanbaghī lahum wamā yastaṭīʿūn

إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ ۝٢١٢

for they are far removed from hearing the discourse of the angels in heaven

innahum ʿani l-samʿi lamaʿzūlūn

فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٢١٣

Invoke no other god with the true God, lest thou become one of those who are doomed to punishment

falā tadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fatakūna mina l-muʿadhabīn

وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِیرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَ ۝٢١٤

And admonish thy more near relations

wa-andhir ʿashīrataka l-aqrabīn

وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢١٥

And behave thy self with meekness towards the true believers who follow thee

wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka limani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn

فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢١٦

And if they be disobedient unto thee, say, verily I am clear of that which ye do

fa-in ʿaṣawka faqul innī barīon mimmā taʿmalūn

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢١٧

And trust in the most mighty, the merciful God

watawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi l-raḥīm

ٱلَّذِی یَرَىٰكَ حِینَ تَقُومُ ۝٢١٨

who seeth thee when thou risest up

alladhī yarāka ḥīna taqūm

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِی ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢١٩

and thy behaviour among those who worship

wataqallubaka fī l-sājidīn

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٢٢٠

for He both heareth and knoweth

innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢٢١

Shall I declare unto you upon whom the devils descend

hal unabbi-ukum ʿalā man tanazzalu l-shayāṭīn

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٢٢٢

They descend upon every lying and wiched person

tanazzalu ʿalā kulli affākin athīmi

یُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٢٣

They learn what is heard; but the greater part of them are liars

yul'qūna l-samʿa wa-aktharuhum kādhibūn

وَٱلشُّعَرَاۤءُ یَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٢٢٤

And those who err follow the steps of the poets

wal-shuʿarāu yattabiʿuhumu l-ghāwūn

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ وَادࣲ یَهِیمُونَ ۝٢٢٥

Dost thou not see that they rove as bereft of their senses through every valley

alam tara annahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūn

وَأَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٢٢٦

and that they say that which they do not

wa-annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūn

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَیَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ یَنقَلِبُونَ ۝٢٢٧

Except those who believe, and do good works, and remember God frequently; and who defend themselves, after they have been unjustly treated. And they who act unjustly shall know hereafter, with what treatment they shall be treated

illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wadhakarū l-laha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wasayaʿlamu alladhīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabin yanqalibūn
