۞ طسۤمۤ ۝١

26:2 ›
تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢
John Medows Rodwell
These are the signs of the lucid Book
til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-mubīn
26:3 ›
لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣
John Medows Rodwell
Haply thou wearest thyself away with grief because they will not believe
laʿallaka bākhiʿun nafsaka allā yakūnū mu'minīn
26:4 ›
إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ءَایَةࣰ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَـٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِینَ ۝٤
John Medows Rodwell
Were it our will we could send down to them a sign from Heaven, before which they would humbly bow
in nasha nunazzil ʿalayhim mina l-samāi āyatan faẓallat aʿnāquhum lahā khāḍiʿīn
26:5 ›
وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٥
John Medows Rodwell
But from each fresh warning that cometh to them from the God of Mercy they have only turned aside
wamā yatīhim min dhik'rin mina l-raḥmāni muḥ'dathin illā kānū ʿanhu muʿ'riḍīn
26:6 ›
فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَیَأۡتِیهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰۤؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٦
John Medows Rodwell
And treated it as a lie: But tidings shall reach them which they shall not laugh to scorn
faqad kadhabū fasayatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūn
26:7 ›
أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝٧

Have they not beheld the earth - how we have caused every kind of noble plant to spring up therein
awalam yaraw ilā l-arḍi kam anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi
26:8 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨
John Medows Rodwell
Verily, in this is a sign: but most of them believe not
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:9 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٩
John Medows Rodwell
And assuredly, thy Lord! - He is the Mighty, the Merciful
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
2 Moses called and sent to Pharaoh
26:10 ›
وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱئۡتِ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠
John Medows Rodwell
And remember when thy Lord called to Moses, "Go to the wicked people
wa-idh nādā rabbuka mūsā ani i'ti l-qawma l-ẓālimīn
26:11 ›
قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ أَلَا یَتَّقُونَ ۝١١
John Medows Rodwell
The people of Pharaoh. What! will they not fear me?"
qawma fir'ʿawna alā yattaqūn
26:12 ›
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُكَذِّبُونِ ۝١٢
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "My Lord, in sooth I fear lest they treat me as a liar
qāla rabbi innī akhāfu an yukadhibūn
26:13 ›
وَیَضِیقُ صَدۡرِی وَلَا یَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِی فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ ۝١٣
John Medows Rodwell
And my breast is straitened, and I am slow of speech: send therefore to Aaron to be my helpmate
wayaḍīqu ṣadrī walā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa-arsil ilā hārūn
26:14 ›
وَلَهُمۡ عَلَیَّ ذَنۢبࣱ فَأَخَافُ أَن یَقۡتُلُونِ ۝١٤
John Medows Rodwell
For they have a charge against me, and I fear lest they put me to death."
walahum ʿalayya dhanbun fa-akhāfu an yaqtulūn
26:15 ›
قَالَ كَلَّاۖ فَٱذۡهَبَا بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝١٥
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "Surely not. Go ye therefore with our signs: we will be with you and will hearken
qāla kallā fa-idh'habā biāyātinā innā maʿakum mus'tamiʿūn
26:16 ›
فَأۡتِیَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦
John Medows Rodwell
And go to Pharaoh and say: 'Verily we are the messengers of the Lord of the worlds
fatiyā fir'ʿawna faqūlā innā rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:17 ›
أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٧
John Medows Rodwell
Send forth with us the children of Israel."
an arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīl
26:18 ›
قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِینَا وَلِیدࣰا وَلَبِثۡتَ فِینَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِینَ ۝١٨
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "Did we not rear thee among us when a child? And hast thou not passed years of thy life among us
qāla alam nurabbika fīnā walīdan walabith'ta fīnā min ʿumurika sinīn
26:19 ›
وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِی فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٩
John Medows Rodwell
And yet what a deed is that which thou hast done! Thou art one of the ungrateful."
wafaʿalta faʿlataka allatī faʿalta wa-anta mina l-kāfirīn
26:20 ›
قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَاۤ إِذࣰا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٢٠
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "I did it indeed, and I was one of those who erred
qāla faʿaltuhā idhan wa-anā mina l-ḍālīn
26:21 ›
فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِی رَبِّی حُكۡمࣰا وَجَعَلَنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٢١
John Medows Rodwell
And I fled from you because I feared you; but my Lord hath given me wisdom and hath made me one of his Apostles
fafarartu minkum lammā khif'tukum fawahaba lī rabbī ḥuk'man wajaʿalanī mina l-mur'salīn
26:22 ›
وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةࣱ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَیَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٢٢
John Medows Rodwell
And is this the favour thou hast conferred on me, that thou hast enslaved the children of Israel?"
watil'ka niʿ'matun tamunnuhā ʿalayya an ʿabbadtta banī is'rāīl
26:23 ›
قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٣
John Medows Rodwell
Said Pharaoh, "Who then is the Lord of the Worlds?"
qāla fir'ʿawnu wamā rabbu l-ʿālamīn
26:24 ›
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِینَ ۝٢٤
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "The Lord of the Heavens and of the Earth and of all that is between them, if only ye believe it."
qāla rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīn
26:25 ›
قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٢٥
John Medows Rodwell
Said Pharaoh to those around him, "Hear ye this?"
qāla liman ḥawlahu alā tastamiʿūn
26:26 ›
قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٦
John Medows Rodwell
"Your Lord," said Moses, "and the Lord of your sires of old."
qāla rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīn
26:27 ›
قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٢٧
John Medows Rodwell
"In sooth, your Apostle whom He hath sent to you," said Pharaoh, "is certainly possessed."
qāla inna rasūlakumu alladhī ur'sila ilaykum lamajnūnu
26:28 ›
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "Lord is He of the East and of the West, and of all that is between them, if ye can understand."
qāla rabbu l-mashriqi wal-maghribi wamā baynahumā in kuntum taʿqilūn
26:29 ›
قَالَ لَىِٕنِ ٱتَّخَذۡتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَیۡرِی لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسۡجُونِینَ ۝٢٩
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "If ye take any God beside me, I will surely put thee in ward."
qāla la-ini ittakhadhta ilāhan ghayrī la-ajʿalannaka mina l-masjūnīn
26:30 ›
قَالَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَیۡءࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٣٠
John Medows Rodwell
Said Moses, "What! if I shew thee that which shall be a proof of my mission?"
qāla awalaw ji'tuka bishayin mubīni
26:31 ›
قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣١
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "Forth with it then, if thou speakest truth."
qāla fati bihi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn
26:32 ›
فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٣٢
John Medows Rodwell
Then threw he down his staff, and lo! an undoubted serpent
fa-alqā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thuʿ'bānun mubīnu
26:33 ›
وَنَزَعَ یَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِیَ بَیۡضَاۤءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝٣٣
John Medows Rodwell
And he drew out his hand, and lo! it was white to the beholders
wanazaʿa yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍāu lilnnāẓirīn
3 Moses and Enchanters
26:34 ›
قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٣٤
John Medows Rodwell
He said to his nobles around him. "This truly is a right cunning sorcerer
qāla lil'mala-i ḥawlahu inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīmu
26:35 ›
یُرِیدُ أَن یُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ ۝٣٥
John Medows Rodwell
Fain would he drive you out of your land by his Sorcery. But what do ye suggest?"
yurīdu an yukh'rijakum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihi famādhā tamurūn
26:36 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٣٦
John Medows Rodwell
They said, "Put him and his brother off awhile, and send summoners to all the cities
qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-ib'ʿath fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn
26:37 ›
یَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٧
John Medows Rodwell
Who shall bring to thee every cunning magician."
yatūka bikulli saḥḥārin ʿalīmi
26:38 ›
فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٣٨
John Medows Rodwell
So the magicians were mustered at a set time, on a solemn day
fajumiʿa l-saḥaratu limīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi
26:39 ›
وَقِیلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٣٩
John Medows Rodwell
And it was said to the people, "Are ye all assembled?"
waqīla lilnnāsi hal antum muj'tamiʿūn
26:40 ›
لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤٠
John Medows Rodwell
-"Yes! and we will follow the magicians if they gain the day."
laʿallanā nattabiʿu l-saḥarata in kānū humu l-ghālibīn
26:41 ›
فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَىِٕنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤١
John Medows Rodwell
And when the magicians were arrived they said to Pharaoh, "Shall we have a reward if we gain the day?"
falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qālū lifir'ʿawna a-inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn
26:42 ›
قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٢
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "Yes. And verily in that case ye shall be of those who are near my person."
qāla naʿam wa-innakum idhan lamina l-muqarabīn
26:43 ›
قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٤٣
John Medows Rodwell
Moses said to them, "Throw down what ye have to throw."
qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn
26:44 ›
فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِیَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝٤٤
John Medows Rodwell
So they cast down their ropes and rods, and said, "By Pharaoh's might we shall surely win."
fa-alqaw ḥibālahum waʿiṣiyyahum waqālū biʿizzati fir'ʿawna innā lanaḥnu l-ghālibūn
26:45 ›
فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝٤٥
John Medows Rodwell
Then Moses threw down his rod, and lo! it swallowed up their cheating wonders
fa-alqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn
26:46 ›
فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٤٦
John Medows Rodwell
Then the magicians threw themselves down in worship
fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn
26:47 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٧
John Medows Rodwell
They said, "We believe on the Lord of the Worlds
qālū āmannā birabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:48 ›
رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝٤٨
John Medows Rodwell
The Lord of Moses and of Aaron."
rabbi mūsā wahārūn
26:49 ›
قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٩
John Medows Rodwell
Said Pharaoh, "Have ye then believed on him ere I gave you leave? He truly is your master who hath taught you magic. But bye and bye ye shall surely know my power. I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will have you all crucified."
qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra falasawfa taʿlamūna la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn
26:50 ›
قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَیۡرَۖ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝٥٠
John Medows Rodwell
They said, "It cannot harm us, for to our Lord shall we return
qālū lā ḍayra innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn
26:51 ›
إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَاۤ أَن كُنَّاۤ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥١
John Medows Rodwell
Assuredly we trust that our Lord will forgive us our sins, since we are of the first who believe."
innā naṭmaʿu an yaghfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwala l-mu'minīn
4 Moses delivered, Pharaoh drowned
26:52 ›
۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۤ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ۝٥٢
John Medows Rodwell
Then revealed we this order to Moses: "Go forth by night with my servants, for ye will be pursued."
wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī innakum muttabaʿūn
26:53 ›
فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٥٣
John Medows Rodwell
And Pharaoh sent summoners through the cities:
fa-arsala fir'ʿawnu fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn
26:54 ›
إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِیلُونَ ۝٥٤
John Medows Rodwell
"These Israelites," said they, "are a scanty band
inna hāulāi lashir'dhimatun qalīlūn
26:55 ›
وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَاۤىِٕظُونَ ۝٥٥
John Medows Rodwell
Yet are they enraged against us
wa-innahum lanā laghāiẓūn
26:56 ›
وَإِنَّا لَجَمِیعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ ۝٥٦
John Medows Rodwell
But we truly are numerous, wary."
wa-innā lajamīʿun ḥādhirūn
26:57 ›
فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٥٧
John Medows Rodwell
Thus we caused them to quit gardens and fountains
fa-akhrajnāhum min jannātin waʿuyūni
26:58 ›
وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٥٨
John Medows Rodwell
And treasures and splendid dwellings
wakunūzin wamaqāmin karīmi
26:59 ›
كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩
John Medows Rodwell
So was it; and we gave them to the children of Israel for an heritage
kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā banī is'rāīl
26:60 ›
فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِینَ ۝٦٠
John Medows Rodwell
Then at sunrise the Egyptians followed them
fa-atbaʿūhum mush'riqīn
26:61 ›
فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٰۤءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ ۝٦١
John Medows Rodwell
And when the hosts came in view of one another, the comrades of Moses said, "We are surely overtaken."
falammā tarāā l-jamʿāni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamud'rakūn
26:62 ›
قَالَ كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٦٢
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "By no means: - for my Lord is with me - He will guide me."
qāla kallā inna maʿiya rabbī sayahdīn
26:63 ›
فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٦٣
John Medows Rodwell
And we revealed this order to Moses, "Strike the sea with thy rod." And it clave asunder, and each part became like a huge mountain
fa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-infalaqa fakāna kullu fir'qin kal-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīm
26:64 ›
وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٤
John Medows Rodwell
Then made we the others to draw on
wa-azlafnā thamma l-ākharīn
26:65 ›
وَأَنجَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٦٥
John Medows Rodwell
And we saved Moses, and those who were with him, all
wa-anjaynā mūsā waman maʿahu ajmaʿīn
26:66 ›
ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٦

But we drowned the others
thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn
26:67 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٧

Truly in this was a sign; but most of them did not believe
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٦٨

But verily thy Lord, - He is the Mighty, the Merciful
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
26:69 ›
وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٦٩

And recite to them the story of Abraha
wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a ib'rāhīm
26:70 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٠

When he said to his Father and to his people, "What worship ye?"
idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mā taʿbudūn
26:71 ›
قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِینَ ۝٧١
John Medows Rodwell
They said, "We worship idols, and constant is our devotion to them."
qālū naʿbudu aṣnāman fanaẓallu lahā ʿākifīn
26:72 ›
قَالَ هَلۡ یَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ ۝٧٢
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "Can they hear you when ye cry to them
qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūn
26:73 ›
أَوۡ یَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَضُرُّونَ ۝٧٣

Or help you or do you harm?"
aw yanfaʿūnakum aw yaḍurrūn
26:74 ›
قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٤

They said, "But we found our Fathers do the like."
qālū bal wajadnā ābāanā kadhālika yafʿalūn
26:75 ›
قَالَ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٥
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "How think ye? They whom ye worship
qāla afara-aytum mā kuntum taʿbudūn
26:76 ›
أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ ۝٧٦

Ye and your fathers of early days
antum waābāukumu l-aqdamūn
26:77 ›
فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّیۤ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٧

Are my foes: but not so the Lord of the Worlds
fa-innahum ʿaduwwun lī illā rabba l-ʿālamīn
26:78 ›
ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَنِی فَهُوَ یَهۡدِینِ ۝٧٨

Who hath created me, and guideth me
alladhī khalaqanī fahuwa yahdīn
26:79 ›
وَٱلَّذِی هُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِی وَیَسۡقِینِ ۝٧٩

Who giveth me food and drink
wa-alladhī huwa yuṭ'ʿimunī wayasqīn
26:80 ›
وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ یَشۡفِینِ ۝٨٠

And when I am sick, he healeth me
wa-idhā mariḍ'tu fahuwa yashfīn
26:81 ›
وَٱلَّذِی یُمِیتُنِی ثُمَّ یُحۡیِینِ ۝٨١

And who will cause me to die and again quicken me
wa-alladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥ'yīn
26:82 ›
وَٱلَّذِیۤ أَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لِی خَطِیۤءَتِی یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٨٢
John Medows Rodwell
And who, I hope, will forgive me my sins in the day of reckoning
wa-alladhī aṭmaʿu an yaghfira lī khaṭīatī yawma l-dīn
26:83 ›
رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی حُكۡمࣰا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِی بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٣
John Medows Rodwell
My Lord! bestow on me wisdom and join me to the just
rabbi hab lī ḥuk'man wa-alḥiq'nī bil-ṣāliḥīn
26:84 ›
وَٱجۡعَل لِّی لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٨٤
John Medows Rodwell
And give me a good name among posterity
wa-ij'ʿal lī lisāna ṣid'qin fī l-ākhirīn
26:85 ›
وَٱجۡعَلۡنِی مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨٥
John Medows Rodwell
And make me one of the heirs of the garden of delight
wa-ij'ʿalnī min warathati jannati l-naʿīm
26:86 ›
وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِیۤ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٨٦

And forgive my father, for he was one of the erring
wa-igh'fir li-abī innahu kāna mina l-ḍālīn
26:87 ›
وَلَا تُخۡزِنِی یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٨٧

And put me not to shame on the day when mankind shall be raised up
walā tukh'zinī yawma yub'ʿathūn
26:88 ›
یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ ۝٨٨

The day when neither wealth nor children shall avail
yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun walā banūn
26:89 ›
إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

Save to him who shall come to God with a sound heart
illā man atā l-laha biqalbin salīmi
26:90 ›
وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٩٠

When Paradise shall be brought near the pious
wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīn
26:91 ›
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِیمُ لِلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٩١

And Hell shall lay open for those who have gone astray
waburrizati l-jaḥīmu lil'ghāwīn
26:92 ›
وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٩٢
John Medows Rodwell
And it shall be said to them, 'Where are they whom ye worshipped
waqīla lahum ayna mā kuntum taʿbudūn
26:93 ›
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ یَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَنتَصِرُونَ ۝٩٣

Beside God? Can they harm you or help themselves?
min dūni l-lahi hal yanṣurūnakum aw yantaṣirūn
26:94 ›
فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِیهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٩٤

And they shall be cast into it - the seducers and the seduced
fakub'kibū fīhā hum wal-ghāwūn
26:95 ›
وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِیسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٩٥

And all the host of Eblis
wajunūdu ib'līsa ajmaʿūn
26:96 ›
قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٩٦
John Medows Rodwell
They shall say, as they wrangle therein together
qālū wahum fīhā yakhtaṣimūn
26:97 ›
تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٧
John Medows Rodwell
'By God, we were in a plain error
tal-lahi in kunnā lafī ḍalālin mubīni
26:98 ›
إِذۡ نُسَوِّیكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٨

When we equalled you with the Lord of the Worlds
idh nusawwīkum birabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:99 ›
وَمَاۤ أَضَلَّنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٩٩

And none misled us but the wicked
wamā aḍallanā illā l-muj'rimūn
26:100 ›
فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِینَ ۝١٠٠
John Medows Rodwell
And we have none to plead for us
famā lanā min shāfiʿīn
26:101 ›
وَلَا صَدِیقٍ حَمِیمࣲ ۝١٠١
John Medows Rodwell
Nor friend who careth for us
walā ṣadīqin ḥamīmi
26:102 ›
فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٢

Could we but return, we would be of the believers."
falaw anna lanā karratan fanakūna mina l-mu'minīn
26:103 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

Verily, in this was a sign: but most of them believed not

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

26:105 ›
كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٠٥

The people of Noah gainsaid the Apostles
kadhabat qawmu nūḥin l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٠٦

When their brother Noah said to them, "Will ye not fear God
idh qāla lahum akhūhum nūḥun alā tattaqūn
26:107 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٠٧

Of a truth am I your faithful Apostle
innī lakum rasūlun amīnu
26:108 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٠٨

Fear God then and obey me
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:109 ›
وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٩
John Medows Rodwell
I ask of you no reward for this, for my reward is of the Lord of the Worlds alone
wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:110 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١١٠

Fear God then and obey me."
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:111 ›
۞ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ ۝١١١
John Medows Rodwell
They said, "Shall we believe on thee when the meanest only are thy followers?"
qālū anu'minu laka wa-ittabaʿaka l-ardhalūn
26:112 ›
قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِی بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٢
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "But I have no knowledge of that they did
qāla wamā ʿil'mī bimā kānū yaʿmalūn
26:113 ›
إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّیۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١١٣
John Medows Rodwell
To my Lord only must their account be given: would that ye understood this
in ḥisābuhum illā ʿalā rabbī law tashʿurūn
26:114 ›
وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٤
John Medows Rodwell
And I will not thrust away those who believe
wamā anā biṭāridi l-mu'minīn
26:115 ›
إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٥

For I am only one charged with plain warnings."
in anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu
26:116 ›
قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِینَ ۝١١٦

They said, "Now unless thou desist, O Noah, one of the stoned shalt thou surely be."
qālū la-in lam tantahi yānūḥu latakūnanna mina l-marjūmīn
26:117 ›
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی كَذَّبُونِ ۝١١٧
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "Lord! my people treat me as a liar
qāla rabbi inna qawmī kadhabūn
26:118 ›
فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰا وَنَجِّنِی وَمَن مَّعِیَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨
John Medows Rodwell
Decide thou therefore a decision between me and them, and rescue me and the faithful who are with me."
fa-if'taḥ baynī wabaynahum fatḥan wanajjinī waman maʿiya mina l-mu'minīn
26:119 ›
فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١١٩
John Medows Rodwell
So we saved him and those who were with him in the fully-laden ark
fa-anjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn
26:120 ›
ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝١٢٠

And afterwards we drowned the rest
thumma aghraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīn
26:121 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢١

Herein truly was a sign, but most of them believed not
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

The Adites treated their Apostles as liars

26:124 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

When their brother Houd said to them, "Will ye not fear God
idh qāla lahum akhūhum hūdun alā tattaqūn
26:125 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٢٥

I am your Apostle, worthy of all credit
innī lakum rasūlun amīnu
26:126 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٢٦

Fear God then and obey me
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:127 ›
وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢٧

I ask for no reward for this; for my reward is of the Lord of the Worlds alone

26:128 ›
أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِیعٍ ءَایَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ ۝١٢٨

What! build ye landmarks on all heights in mere pastime
atabnūna bikulli rīʿin āyatan taʿbathūn
26:129 ›
وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ ۝١٢٩

And raise ye structures to be your lasting abodes
watattakhidhūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum takhludūn
26:130 ›
وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ۝١٣٠

And when ye put forth your power do ye put it forth with harshness
wa-idhā baṭashtum baṭashtum jabbārīn
26:131 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٣١

Fear ye God then and obey me
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:132 ›
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٢
John Medows Rodwell
And fear ye Him who hath plenteously betowed on you ye well know what
wa-ittaqū alladhī amaddakum bimā taʿlamūn
26:133 ›
أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٣٣
John Medows Rodwell
Plenteously bestowed on you flocks and children
amaddakum bi-anʿāmin wabanīn
26:134 ›
وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٣٤
John Medows Rodwell
And gardens and fountains
wajannātin waʿuyūni
26:135 ›
إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥
John Medows Rodwell
Indeed I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day."
innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi
26:136 ›
قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦

They said, "It is the same to us whether thou warn or warn us not
qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn
26:137 ›
إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧

This is but a tale of the ancients
in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn
26:138 ›
وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨
John Medows Rodwell
And we are not they who shall be punished."
wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn
26:139 ›
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩
John Medows Rodwell
And they charged him with imposture; and we destroyed them. In this was a sign: but most of them believed not
fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:140 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠

But thy Lord! - He is the Mighty, the Merciful
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

26:141 ›
كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١

The Themoudites also treated their Apostles as liars
kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn
26:142 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢
John Medows Rodwell
When their brother Saleh said to them, "Will ye not fear God
idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn
26:143 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣

I am your Apostle worthy of all credit
innī lakum rasūlun amīnu
26:144 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٤٤

Fear God, then, and obey me
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:145 ›
وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٤٥

26:146 ›
أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِی مَا هَـٰهُنَاۤ ءَامِنِینَ ۝١٤٦

Shall ye be left secure amid these things here
atut'rakūna fī mā hāhunā āminīn
26:147 ›
فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝١٤٧

Amid gardens and fountains
fī jannātin waʿuyūni
26:148 ›
وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِیمࣱ ۝١٤٨
John Medows Rodwell
And corn-fields and palm-trees, with flower-sheathing branches
wazurūʿin wanakhlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmu
26:149 ›
وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا فَـٰرِهِینَ ۝١٤٩
John Medows Rodwell
And, insolent that ye are, will ye hew out your dwellings in the mountains
watanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan fārihīn
26:150 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٥٠

But fear God and obey me
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:151 ›
وَلَا تُطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٥١
John Medows Rodwell
And obey not the bidding of those who commit excess
walā tuṭīʿū amra l-mus'rifīn
26:152 ›
ٱلَّذِینَ یُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا یُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٢

Who act disorderly on the earth and reform it not."
alladhīna yuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi walā yuṣ'liḥūn
26:153 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٥٣

They said, "Certainly thou art a person bewitched
qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn
26:154 ›
مَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِءَایَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٤
John Medows Rodwell
Thou art only a man like us: produce now a sign if thou art a man of truth."
mā anta illā basharun mith'lunā fati biāyatin in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn
26:155 ›
قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝١٥٥
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "This she-camel, then - drink shall there be for her, and drink shall there be for you, on a several day for each
qāla hādhihi nāqatun lahā shir'bun walakum shir'bu yawmin maʿlūmi
26:156 ›
وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥٦
John Medows Rodwell
But harm her not, lest the punishment of a tremendous day overtake you."
walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaẓīmi
26:157 ›
فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝١٥٧

But they ham-strung her, and repented of it on the morrow
faʿaqarūhā fa-aṣbaḥū nādimīn
26:158 ›
فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٨
John Medows Rodwell
For the punishment overtook them. In this truly was a sign, but most of them believed not
fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:159 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٥٩

But thy Lord! - He is the Powerful, the Merciful
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
9 History of Lot
26:160 ›
كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٦٠

The people of Lot treated their apostles as liars
kadhabat qawmu lūṭin l-mur'salīn
26:161 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦١

When their brother Lot said to them, "Will ye not fear God
idh qāla lahum akhūhum lūṭun alā tattaqūn
26:162 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٦٢

I am your Apostle worthy of all credit
innī lakum rasūlun amīnu
26:163 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٦٣

Fear God, then, and obey me
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:164 ›
وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٤
John Medows Rodwell
For this I ask you no reward: my reward is of the Lord of the worlds alone
wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:165 ›
أَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلذُّكۡرَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٥

What! with men, of all creatures, will ye have commerce
atatūna l-dhuk'rāna mina l-ʿālamīn
26:166 ›
وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ ۝١٦٦
John Medows Rodwell
And leave ye your wives whom your Lord hath created for you? Ah! ye are an erring people!"
watadharūna mā khalaqa lakum rabbukum min azwājikum bal antum qawmun ʿādūn
26:167 ›
قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝١٦٧
John Medows Rodwell
They said, "O Lot, if thou desist not, one of the banished shalt thou surely be."
qālū la-in lam tantahi yālūṭu latakūnanna mina l-mukh'rajīn
26:168 ›
قَالَ إِنِّی لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِینَ ۝١٦٨
John Medows Rodwell
He said, "I utterly abhor your doings
qāla innī liʿamalikum mina l-qālīn
26:169 ›
رَبِّ نَجِّنِی وَأَهۡلِی مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٩
John Medows Rodwell
My Lord! deliver me and my family from what they do."
rabbi najjinī wa-ahlī mimmā yaʿmalūn
26:170 ›
فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٧٠
John Medows Rodwell
So we delivered him and his whole family
fanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn
26:171 ›
إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٧١

Save an aged one among those who tarried
illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn
26:172 ›
ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٧٢

Then we destroyed the rest
thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn
26:173 ›
وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَسَاۤءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٣

And we rained a rain upon them, and fatal was the rain to those whom we had warned
wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fasāa maṭaru l-mundharīn
26:174 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٤

In this truly was a sign; but most of them did not believe
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:175 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٧٥

But thy Lord! He is the Powerful, the Merciful
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
10 History of Shu'aib
26:176 ›
كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ لۡءَیۡكَةِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧٦

The dwellers in the forest of Madian treated the Apostles as liars
kadhaba aṣḥābu al'aykati l-mur'salīn
26:177 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧٧

When Shoaib their brother said to them, "Will ye not fear God
idh qāla lahum shuʿaybun alā tattaqūn
26:178 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٧٨

I truly am your trustworthy Apostle
innī lakum rasūlun amīnu
26:179 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٧٩

Fear God, then, and obey me
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:180 ›
وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٠

No reward ask I of you for this: my reward is of the Lord of the Worlds alone

26:181 ›
۞ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡسِرِینَ ۝١٨١

Fill the measure, and be not of those who minish
awfū l-kayla walā takūnū mina l-mukh'sirīn
26:182 ›
وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمِ ۝١٨٢

Weigh with exact balance
wazinū bil-qis'ṭāsi l-mus'taqīm
26:183 ›
وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٨٣
John Medows Rodwell
And defraud not men in their substance, and do no wrong on the earth by deeds of licence
walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn
26:184 ›
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٨٤
John Medows Rodwell
And fear Him who made you and the races of old."
wa-ittaqū alladhī khalaqakum wal-jibilata l-awalīn
26:185 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٨٥

They said, "Certainly thou art a person bewitched

26:186 ›
وَمَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝١٨٦

Thou art but a man like us, and we deem thee liar
wamā anta illā basharun mith'lunā wa-in naẓunnuka lamina l-kādhibīn
26:187 ›
فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا كِسَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٧
John Medows Rodwell
Make now a part of the heaven to fall down upon us, if thou art a man of truth."
fa-asqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina l-samāi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn
26:188 ›
قَالَ رَبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٨

He said, "My Lord best knoweth your doings."
qāla rabbī aʿlamu bimā taʿmalūn
26:189 ›
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٨٩
John Medows Rodwell
And when they treated him as a liar, the chastisement of the day of cloud overtook them. This truly was the chastisement of a dreadful day
fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahum ʿadhābu yawmi l-ẓulati innahu kāna ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi
26:190 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٠

In this was a sign, but most of them believed not
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:191 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٩١

But thy Lord! - He is the Mighty, the Merciful
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
11 Prophet's Opponents warned
26:192 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِیلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٩٢

Verily from the Lord of the Worlds hath this Book come down
wa-innahu latanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:193 ›
نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِینُ ۝١٩٣

The faithful spirit hath come down with i
nazala bihi l-rūḥu l-amīn
26:194 ›
عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِینَ ۝١٩٤

Upon thy heart, that thou mightest become a warner
bilisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīni
26:195 ›
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیࣲّ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٩٥

In the clear Arabic tongue
Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin
26:196 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِی زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٩٦

And truly it is foretold in the Scriptures of them of yore
wa-innahu lafī zuburi l-awalīn
26:197 ›
أَوَ لَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَایَةً أَن یَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰۤؤُا۟ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٩٧

Was it not a sign to them that the learned among the children of Israel recognised it
awalam yakun lahum āyatan an yaʿlamahu ʿulamāu banī is'rāīl
26:198 ›
وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِینَ ۝١٩٨
John Medows Rodwell
If we had sent it down unto any foreigner
walaw nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-aʿjamīn
26:199 ›
فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٩

And he had recited it to them, they had not believed
faqara-ahu ʿalayhim mā kānū bihi mu'minīn
26:200 ›
كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٢٠٠

In such sort have we influenced the heart of the wicked ones
kadhālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn
26:201 ›
لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٢٠١

That they will not believe it till they see the grievous chastisement
lā yu'minūna bihi ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm
26:202 ›
فَیَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٠٢
John Medows Rodwell
And it shall come upon them on a sudden when they look not for it
fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn
26:203 ›
فَیَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ۝٢٠٣
John Medows Rodwell
And they will say, "Can we be respited?"
fayaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn
26:204 ›
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٢٠٤

What! will they seek to hasten on our chastisement
afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn
26:205 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِینَ ۝٢٠٥

How thinkest thou? If after we have given them their fill for years
afara-ayta in mattaʿnāhum sinīn
26:206 ›
ثُمَّ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٠٦

That with which they are menaced come upon them at last
thumma jāahum mā kānū yūʿadūn
26:207 ›
مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُمَتَّعُونَ ۝٢٠٧

Of what avail will their enjoyments be to them
mā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūn
26:208 ›
وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨

We never destroyed a city which had not first its warner
wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā mundhirūn
26:209 ›
ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٠٩

With admonition; nor did we deal unjustly
dhik'rā wamā kunnā ẓālimīn
26:210 ›
وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢١٠

The Satans were not sent down with this Koran
wamā tanazzalat bihi l-shayāṭīn
26:211 ›
وَمَا یَنۢبَغِی لَهُمۡ وَمَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٢١١

It beseemed them not, and they had not the power
wamā yanbaghī lahum wamā yastaṭīʿūn
26:212 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ ۝٢١٢

For they are far removed from hearing it
innahum ʿani l-samʿi lamaʿzūlūn
26:213 ›
فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٢١٣

Call not thou on any other god but God, lest thou be of those consigned to torment
falā tadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fatakūna mina l-muʿadhabīn
26:214 ›
وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِیرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَ ۝٢١٤

But warn thy relatives of nearer kin
wa-andhir ʿashīrataka l-aqrabīn
26:215 ›
وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢١٥

And kindly lower thy wing over the faithful who follow thee
wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka limani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn
26:216 ›
فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢١٦
John Medows Rodwell
And if they disobey thee, then say: "I will not be answerable for your doings;"
fa-in ʿaṣawka faqul innī barīon mimmā taʿmalūn
26:217 ›
وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢١٧

And put thy trust in Him that is the Mighty, the Merciful
watawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi l-raḥīm
26:218 ›
ٱلَّذِی یَرَىٰكَ حِینَ تَقُومُ ۝٢١٨

Who seeth thee when thou standest in prayer
alladhī yarāka ḥīna taqūm
26:219 ›
وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِی ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢١٩
John Medows Rodwell
And thy demeanour amongst those who worship
wataqallubaka fī l-sājidīn
26:220 ›
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٢٢٠

For He heareth, knoweth all
innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm
26:221 ›
هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢٢١
John Medows Rodwell
Shall I tell you on whom Satan descend
hal unabbi-ukum ʿalā man tanazzalu l-shayāṭīn
26:222 ›
تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٢٢٢

They descend on every lying, wicked person
tanazzalu ʿalā kulli affākin athīmi
26:223 ›
یُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٢٣
John Medows Rodwell
They impart what they have heard; - but most of them are liars
yul'qūna l-samʿa wa-aktharuhum kādhibūn
26:224 ›
وَٱلشُّعَرَاۤءُ یَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٢٢٤

It is the POETS whom the erring follow
wal-shuʿarāu yattabiʿuhumu l-ghāwūn
26:225 ›
أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ وَادࣲ یَهِیمُونَ ۝٢٢٥

Seest thou not how they rove distraught in every valley
alam tara annahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūn
26:226 ›
وَأَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٢٢٦

And that they say that which they do not
wa-annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūn
26:227 ›
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَیَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ یَنقَلِبُونَ ۝٢٢٧
John Medows Rodwell
Save those who believe and do good works, and oft remember God; And who defend themselves when unjustly treated. But they who treat them unjustly shall find out what a lot awaiteth them
illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wadhakarū l-laha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wasayaʿlamu alladhīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabin yanqalibūn
