1 The Prophet is consoled

۞ طسۤمۤ ۝١

Ta. Si’in. Mim!

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢

These are the Verses of the most remarkable Book, (the 'Qur’ān').

til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-mubīn

لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣

It may be that you, (O’ Muhammad), kill yourself with grief because they are not inclined to believe (in Allâh).

laʿallaka bākhiʿun nafsaka allā yakūnū mu'minīn

إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ءَایَةࣰ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَـٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِینَ ۝٤

If We willed, We could send down on them from the sky a (prodigious) sign so that their necks would remain bowed in humility before it.

in nasha nunazzil ʿalayhim mina l-samāi āyatan faẓallat aʿnāquhum lahā khāḍiʿīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٥

Whenever a ‘New Revelation’ comes to them from the All-Merciful (Allâh) to admonish them, they turn away from it.

wamā yatīhim min dhik'rin mina l-raḥmāni muḥ'dathin illā kānū ʿanhu muʿ'riḍīn

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَیَأۡتِیهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰۤؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٦

So they have obstinately refused to give credence to ('Qur’ān'). Thus, the (noteworthy) information of what they scoff at will come to them.

faqad kadhabū fasayatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝٧

Have they not considered the earth in which We caused different types of gracious plants to grow in pairs?

awalam yaraw ilā l-arḍi kam anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨

verily, in this is a sign (of Allâh's power & glory), yet most of them are not inclined to believe( in Allâh).

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٩

Absolutely! Your Lord is definitely the One Who is All- Mighty and the Most Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

2 Moses called and sent to Pharaoh

وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱئۡتِ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠

(Remember) when your Lord called ‘Moses’ (saying): "Go to the people who are grossly unfair and morally wrong,

wa-idh nādā rabbuka mūsā ani i'ti l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ أَلَا یَتَّقُونَ ۝١١

The clan of ‘Pharaoh’. Will they not act piously?”

qawma fir'ʿawna alā yattaqūn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُكَذِّبُونِ ۝١٢

‘Moses’ said: “I fear that they will deny me,

qāla rabbi innī akhāfu an yukadhibūn

وَیَضِیقُ صَدۡرِی وَلَا یَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِی فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ ۝١٣

And my breast will be straitened. And my tongue is not persuasive in speaking. Thus, send for (my brother) ‘Aaron’ (to accompany me).

wayaḍīqu ṣadrī walā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa-arsil ilā hārūn

وَلَهُمۡ عَلَیَّ ذَنۢبࣱ فَأَخَافُ أَن یَقۡتُلُونِ ۝١٤

Beside that, they have a charge (of murder) against me, and I am afraid that they will sentence me to death.”

walahum ʿalayya dhanbun fa-akhāfu an yaqtulūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۖ فَٱذۡهَبَا بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝١٥

(Allâh) said: "Nay! Go you both with Our signs (of power & glory which I have provided you). We will definitely be with you all, listening attentively.

qāla kallā fa-idh'habā biāyātinā innā maʿakum mus'tamiʿūn

فَأۡتِیَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦

So go, both of you, unto the ‘Pharaoh’ and say: 'We are the ‘Messengers’ of the Lord of the worlds,

fatiyā fir'ʿawna faqūlā innā rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٧

So permit the ‘Children of Israel’ to go with us.' "

an arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīl

قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِینَا وَلِیدࣰا وَلَبِثۡتَ فِینَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِینَ ۝١٨

‘Pharaoh’ said "Did we not bring you up among us when you were a child? You spent so many years of your life among us!

qāla alam nurabbika fīnā walīdan walabith'ta fīnā min ʿumurika sinīn

وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِی فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٩

Then you committed that (nefarious) deed of yours which you did. And you were one of the ungrateful."

wafaʿalta faʿlataka allatī faʿalta wa-anta mina l-kāfirīn

قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَاۤ إِذࣰا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٢٠

(‘Moses’) said: “(I do confess and deeply regret that) I committed that (nefarious) deed (unintentionally) when I was of those who are astray.

qāla faʿaltuhā idhan wa-anā mina l-ḍālīn

فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِی رَبِّی حُكۡمࣰا وَجَعَلَنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٢١

Thus, I fled from you when I became afraid that you (would sentence me to death), then my Lord vouchsafed me the authority of moral judgments and appointed me as one of (His) Messengers.

fafarartu minkum lammā khif'tukum fawahaba lī rabbī ḥuk'man wajaʿalanī mina l-mur'salīn

وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةࣱ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَیَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٢٢

As for that past favor that you castigate me with (is owed to the fact) that you have (unjustly) enslaved the ‘Children of Israel’."

watil'ka niʿ'matun tamunnuhā ʿalayya an ʿabbadtta banī is'rāīl

قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٣

‘Pharaoh’ said: “What do you mean by the Lord of all the worlds?”

qāla fir'ʿawnu wamā rabbu l-ʿālamīn

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِینَ ۝٢٤

‘Moses’ said: "Lord of the heavens, the earth and all that is between them, if you are convinced with certainty.”

qāla rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīn

قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٢٥

‘Pharaoh’ said unto those around: "Do you not hear (what he is saying)?"

qāla liman ḥawlahu alā tastamiʿūn

قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٦

‘Moses’ said : "Your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers."

qāla rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīn

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٢٧

‘Pharaoh’ said: Indeed! Your Messenger, who has been sent unto you, is absolutely lunatic.”

qāla inna rasūlakumu alladhī ur'sila ilaykum lamajnūnu

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨

‘Moses’ said: "Lord of the east, the west and all that is between them. (For this very reason, you must worship & venerate him) if you do possess high self-awareness that allows you to understand.”

qāla rabbu l-mashriqi wal-maghribi wamā baynahumā in kuntum taʿqilūn

قَالَ لَىِٕنِ ٱتَّخَذۡتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَیۡرِی لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسۡجُونِینَ ۝٢٩

‘Pharaoh’ said: “If it happens that you choose a god other than me, I will definitely put you in jail."

qāla la-ini ittakhadhta ilāhan ghayrī la-ajʿalannaka mina l-masjūnīn

قَالَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَیۡءࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٣٠

‘Moses’ said: "Even if I brought to you something manifest?"

qāla awalaw ji'tuka bishayin mubīni

قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣١

‘Pharaoh’ said: “Do bring it forth then, if you are of the truthful!"

qāla fati bihi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٣٢

So he cast his staff; and suddenly it turned into veritable serpent.

fa-alqā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thuʿ'bānun mubīnu

وَنَزَعَ یَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِیَ بَیۡضَاۤءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝٣٣

Then he drew forth his hand (from his armpit after placing it therein), it was glittering white in the eyes of the beholders.

wanazaʿa yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍāu lilnnāẓirīn

3 Moses and Enchanters

قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٣٤

‘Pharaoh’ said unto the chiefs around him: “Indeed! This (man) is certainly an expert magician.

qāla lil'mala-i ḥawlahu inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīmu

یُرِیدُ أَن یُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ ۝٣٥

He seeks to drive you out of your land by his sorcery. Therefore, what do you suggest?"

yurīdu an yukh'rijakum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihi famādhā tamurūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٣٦

They said: "Give him and his brother respite, and (in the meantime) send forth heralds to all cities,

qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-ib'ʿath fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

یَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٧

To bring to your presence every expert magician.”

yatūka bikulli saḥḥārin ʿalīmi

فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٣٨

Thus, the magicians were assembled for an appointed time of a fixed day.

fajumiʿa l-saḥaratu limīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi

وَقِیلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٣٩

It was said unto the people: "Are you too going to come?

waqīla lilnnāsi hal antum muj'tamiʿūn

لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤٠

They say, “We may follow (the faith of the magicians) if they become victorious.”

laʿallanā nattabiʿu l-saḥarata in kānū humu l-ghālibīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَىِٕنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤١

When the magicians came, they said to ‘Pharaoh’: "We shall certainly obtain a (big) reward, if we attain victory, shall we?"

falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qālū lifir'ʿawna a-inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn

قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٢

He said: "Yes, indeed. You will then be among the closest senior advisors to me."

qāla naʿam wa-innakum idhan lamina l-muqarabīn

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٤٣

‘Moses’ said unto the magicians: "Do throw whatever you are going to throw!"

qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn

فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِیَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝٤٤

Thus. they threw their ropes and their sticks, (saying): “By the great power of ‘Pharaoh’, it is we who will definitely attain victory."

fa-alqaw ḥibālahum waʿiṣiyyahum waqālū biʿizzati fir'ʿawna innā lanaḥnu l-ghālibūn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝٤٥

Then ‘Moses’ threw his staff and suddenly it swallowed up what they simulated.

fa-alqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn

فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٤٦

Consequently, the magicians were impelled to fall down prostrate,

fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn

قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٧

Saying: "We believe in the Lord of all the worlds.

qālū āmannā birabbi l-ʿālamīn

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝٤٨

The Lord of ‘Moses’ and ‘Aaron’.”

rabbi mūsā wahārūn

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٩

(‘Pharaoh’) said: “You have believed in him before I gave you the permission. Certainly he is your chief who taught you sorcery. Therefore, you will definitely come to know (the one who has the impressive power, me or the Lord of ‘Moses’). I will most definitely have your hands and feet cut off alternately, and then I will definitely have you crucified all together. "

qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra falasawfa taʿlamūna la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn

قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَیۡرَۖ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝٥٠

They said: "No harm! Verily, we are bound to return unto our Lord.

qālū lā ḍayra innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَاۤ أَن كُنَّاۤ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥١

Indeed!, we ardently hope that our Lord will redeem us from our sins for we are the first to believe (in the Lord of all the worlds)."

innā naṭmaʿu an yaghfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwala l-mu'minīn

4 Moses delivered, Pharaoh drowned

۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۤ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ۝٥٢

We inspired ‘Moses’, saying: “Set forth with My servants by night! Certainly, you are going to be pursued."

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī innakum muttabaʿūn

فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٥٣

‘Pharaoh’ sent heralds into the cities

fa-arsala fir'ʿawnu fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِیلُونَ ۝٥٤

(Announcing publicly): "Indeed, those are but a small troop,

inna hāulāi lashir'dhimatun qalīlūn

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَاۤىِٕظُونَ ۝٥٥

Who are raging furiously against us;

wa-innahum lanā laghāiẓūn

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِیعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ ۝٥٦

And we are truly very cautious multitude.”

wa-innā lajamīʿun ḥādhirūn

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٥٧

Thus, We deprived them of gardens, springs,

fa-akhrajnāhum min jannātin waʿuyūni

وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٥٨

Treasures and honorable status.

wakunūzin wamaqāmin karīmi

كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

This is how We caused the ‘Children of Israel’ to inherit these luxuries.

kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā banī is'rāīl

فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِینَ ۝٦٠

Thus, they (‘Pharaoh’ & his host) pursued them at sunrise.

fa-atbaʿūhum mush'riqīn

فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٰۤءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ ۝٦١

When the two hosts came in view of each other, the companions of ‘Moses’ said: "We will be definitely overtaken."

falammā tarāā l-jamʿāni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamud'rakūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٦٢

‘Moses’ said: "Nay! Certainly my Lord is with me. He will guide me.”

qāla kallā inna maʿiya rabbī sayahdīn

فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٦٣

Thus, We inspired ‘Moses’ (saying:) "Strike the sea with your staff.” It parted, and each part became like a great towering mountain.

fa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-infalaqa fakāna kullu fir'qin kal-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīm

وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٤

Then We brought the others (‘Pharaoh’ & his host) close to them .

wa-azlafnā thamma l-ākharīn

وَأَنجَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٦٥

Eventually, We saved ‘Moses’ and all those with him.

wa-anjaynā mūsā waman maʿahu ajmaʿīn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٦

But We drowned the others.

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٧

Indeed, in (parting the sea) was a sign (of Allâh’s power & glory); yet most of them were not inclined to believe ( in Allâh).

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

5 History of Abraham

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٦٨

Indeed! Your Lord is the One who is absolutely the All- Mighty, the Most Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٦٩

Recite to them the anecdote of ‘Abraham’.

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٠

When he said unto his father and his people: " "What is it that which you devotedly worship (& venerate)?"

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mā taʿbudūn

قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِینَ ۝٧١

They said: "We worship idols but we shall always be faithfully devoted to them.”

qālū naʿbudu aṣnāman fanaẓallu lahā ʿākifīn

قَالَ هَلۡ یَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ ۝٧٢

He said: "Do they hear you when you implore and pray unto them?”

qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūn

أَوۡ یَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَضُرُّونَ ۝٧٣

Or do they benefit or harm (you)?"

aw yanfaʿūnakum aw yaḍurrūn

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٤

They said: “But we found forefathers doing the same."

qālū bal wajadnā ābāanā kadhālika yafʿalūn

قَالَ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٥

He said: "So, have you thought carefully about what you have been worshiping,

qāla afara-aytum mā kuntum taʿbudūn

أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ ۝٧٦

You and all your fathers before you?

antum waābāukumu l-aqdamūn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّیۤ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٧

Surely, they are enemies unto me, except for the Lord of all the worlds,

fa-innahum ʿaduwwun lī illā rabba l-ʿālamīn

ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَنِی فَهُوَ یَهۡدِینِ ۝٧٨

Who created me. Thus, He will guide me (into all the truth).

alladhī khalaqanī fahuwa yahdīn

وَٱلَّذِی هُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِی وَیَسۡقِینِ ۝٧٩

He is the One who feeds me (when I become hungry) and gives me to drink (when I become thirsty).

wa-alladhī huwa yuṭ'ʿimunī wayasqīn

وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ یَشۡفِینِ ۝٨٠

When I become ill, He is the One Who heals me.

wa-idhā mariḍ'tu fahuwa yashfīn

وَٱلَّذِی یُمِیتُنِی ثُمَّ یُحۡیِینِ ۝٨١

He is the One Who will cause me to die, and then give me life.

wa-alladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥ'yīn

وَٱلَّذِیۤ أَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لِی خَطِیۤءَتِی یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٨٢

He is the One Whom I do look forward to forgiving my sins on the ‘Day of Judgment’.

wa-alladhī aṭmaʿu an yaghfira lī khaṭīatī yawma l-dīn

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی حُكۡمࣰا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِی بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٣

My Lord, vouchsafe me the authority of moral judgments, unite me with the righteous,

rabbi hab lī ḥuk'man wa-alḥiq'nī bil-ṣāliḥīn

وَٱجۡعَل لِّی لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٨٤

Let my name be mentioned in reverential tones among later generations,

wa-ij'ʿal lī lisāna ṣid'qin fī l-ākhirīn

وَٱجۡعَلۡنِی مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨٥

Make me one of the inheritors of the garden of the perfect happiness,

wa-ij'ʿalnī min warathati jannati l-naʿīm

وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِیۤ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٨٦

And forgive my father. Indeed, he is among those who have gone astray.

wa-igh'fir li-abī innahu kāna mina l-ḍālīn

وَلَا تُخۡزِنِی یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٨٧

(O’ My Lord), disgrace me not on the day when they will be raised up,

walā tukh'zinī yawma yub'ʿathūn

یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ ۝٨٨

The day when neither wealth nor sons will avail,

yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun walā banūn

إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

Except for the one who comes unto Allâh with a sound heart.”

illā man atā l-laha biqalbin salīmi

وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٩٠

‘Al-Jannah’ will be brought near (that day) to the Pious ( or to those who show honor and reverence for Allâh/ or to those who guard themselves against falling into temptation or sin).

wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīn

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِیمُ لِلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٩١

And ‘Gehenna’ will appear plainly visible to the beguilers.

waburrizati l-jaḥīmu lil'ghāwīn

وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٩٢

It will be said unto them: "Where are those that you used to worship

waqīla lahum ayna mā kuntum taʿbudūn

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ یَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَنتَصِرُونَ ۝٩٣

Instead of Allâh? Will they be able to help you or help themselves?”

min dūni l-lahi hal yanṣurūnakum aw yantaṣirūn

فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِیهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٩٤

Then they will be overturned into the (inferno), they and the beguilers

fakub'kibū fīhā hum wal-ghāwūn

وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِیسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٩٥

And the soldiers of ‘Iblīs’ (-Satan-), all together.

wajunūdu ib'līsa ajmaʿūn

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٩٦

They will say while blaming one another therein:

qālū wahum fīhā yakhtaṣimūn

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٧

"By Allâh (the Lord of all the worlds), we were truly lost in utter deception

tal-lahi in kunnā lafī ḍalālin mubīni

إِذۡ نُسَوِّیكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٨

When we considered you to be the same as the Lord of all the worlds.

idh nusawwīkum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

وَمَاۤ أَضَلَّنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٩٩

No one had the ability to lead us into error except the ungodly sinners.

wamā aḍallanā illā l-muj'rimūn

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِینَ ۝١٠٠

(Unfortunately), we have no intercessors

famā lanā min shāfiʿīn

وَلَا صَدِیقٍ حَمِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

Nor an intimate friend.

walā ṣadīqin ḥamīmi

فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٢

(What a pity!) If we could only have a chance to return (to the ‘worldly life’), then we would definitely become among the Monotheistic Believers.”

falaw anna lanā karratan fanakūna mina l-mu'minīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

In (the anecdote of ‘Abraham’) is definitely a lesson, yet most of them (who heard the anecdote) are still tempted to disbelieve ( in Allâh).

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

Indeed! Your Lord is the One who is absolutely the All- Mighty, the Most Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٠٥

The people of ‘Noah’ obstinately refused to believe the Messengers (of Allâh, the Lord of all the worlds).

kadhabat qawmu nūḥin l-mur'salīn

6 History of Noah

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٠٦

When their brother ‘Noah’ said unto them: “ Will you not act piously?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum nūḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٠٧

Lo! I am a Faithful Messenger (of your Lord) to you,

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٠٨

Thus, act piously towards Allâh and obey me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٩

I ask of you no reward for (my efforts to guide you into all the truth). My reward comes from the Lord of all the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١١٠

Thus, act piously towards Allâh and follow me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

۞ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ ۝١١١

They said: “How do you expect us to believe you when you are followed by a group that has the lowest status.”

qālū anu'minu laka wa-ittabaʿaka l-ardhalūn

قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِی بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٢

He said: “What knowledge have I of what they used to do?

qāla wamā ʿil'mī bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّیۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١١٣

Their reckoning rests with none but my Lord; if only you could become aware (of the ultimate truth).

in ḥisābuhum illā ʿalā rabbī law tashʿurūn

وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٤

I am not the one who is going to drive away those who accept (Allâh into their life)

wamā anā biṭāridi l-mu'minīn

إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٥

I am just a plain warner (who gives you sufficient warning about how to avoid Hellfire).”

in anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِینَ ۝١١٦

They said: “If it happens that you do not cease (this nonsense), O’ ‘Noah’, you will definitely be of those who are stoned (to death)."

qālū la-in lam tantahi yānūḥu latakūnanna mina l-marjūmīn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی كَذَّبُونِ ۝١١٧

He said: "O’ My Lord, indeed, my people obstinately refused to believe me.

qāla rabbi inna qawmī kadhabūn

فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰا وَنَجِّنِی وَمَن مَّعِیَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨

Thus, do judge between them and me with definitive judgment, and save me and those who are with me of the monotheistic believers.”

fa-if'taḥ baynī wabaynahum fatḥan wanajjinī waman maʿiya mina l-mu'minīn

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١١٩

So We saved him and those with him in the laden ark.

fa-anjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝١٢٠

Then, afterward We drowned the others.

thumma aghraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢١

In (saving ‘Noah’ and the monotheistic believers and drowning the faithless people) is definitely a lesson, yet most of them (who heard about the dreadful end of the people of ‘Noah’) are not inclined to believe ( in Allâh).

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

7 History of Hud

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٢٢

Indeed! Your Lord is the One who is absolutely the All- Mighty, the Most Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٌ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

(The people of) 'Aad’ obstinately refused to believe the ‘Messengers’ (of Allâh).

kadhabat ʿādun l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

When ‘Hūd’, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you not act piously towards Allâh?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum hūdun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٢٥

Lo! I am a faithful ‘Messenger’ of your Lord to you,

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٢٦

Thus, act piously towards Allâh and follow me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢٧

I ask of you no reward for (my efforts to guide you into all the truth). My reward comes from the Lord of all the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِیعٍ ءَایَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ ۝١٢٨

Do you build on every hill a lofty fortress for vain pleasure?

atabnūna bikulli rīʿin āyatan taʿbathūn

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ ۝١٢٩

You take for yourselves mansions as if you were going to live forever,

watattakhidhūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum takhludūn

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ۝١٣٠

Yet when you seize, you seize as tyrants.

wa-idhā baṭashtum baṭashtum jabbārīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٣١

Thus, act piously towards Allâh and follow me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٢

Act piously toward the one who amply provides you with (many great tangible gifts) that you know.

wa-ittaqū alladhī amaddakum bimā taʿlamūn

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٣٣

He provides you with cattle and children,

amaddakum bi-anʿāmin wabanīn

وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٣٤

Gardens and water springs.

wajannātin waʿuyūni

إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥

Lo! I fear for you the punishment of a hazardous day."

innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦

They said: "It is all the same to us whether you preach, or are not of the preachers.

qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧

This (our faith) is no other than the custom and tradition of the ancients,

in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn

وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨

And we are not going to be chastised."

wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩

Thus, they obstinately refused to believe him; consequently, we utterly destroyed them. In ( devastating 'Aad’) is definitely a lesson, yet most of them (who know the dreadful end of ‘Aad’) are not inclined to believe ( in Allâh)

fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠

Indeed! Your Lord is the One who is absolutely the All- Mighty, the Most Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

8 History of Salih

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١

(The people of) ‘Thamūd’ obstinately refused to believe the Messengers (of Allâh).

kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢

When ‘Sālih’, their brother, said unto them, ‘‘Will you act piously towards Allâh?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣

Lo! I am a Faithful ‘Messenger’ of your Lord to you,

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٤٤

Thus, act piously towards Allâh and follow me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٤٥

I ask of you no reward for (my efforts to guide you into all the truth). My reward comes from the Lord of all the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِی مَا هَـٰهُنَاۤ ءَامِنِینَ ۝١٤٦

"(Do you presume that) you will be left secure forever in what is here before us,

atut'rakūna fī mā hāhunā āminīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝١٤٧

Amid gardens and water springs,

fī jannātin waʿuyūni

وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِیمࣱ ۝١٤٨

Tilled fields and date-palms with tender spadix;

wazurūʿin wanakhlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmu

وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا فَـٰرِهِینَ ۝١٤٩

And that you will keep on skillfully craving houses out of mountains?

watanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan fārihīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٥٠

Thus, act piously towards Allâh and follow me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَلَا تُطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٥١

Follow not the creed of the prodigals

walā tuṭīʿū amra l-mus'rifīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا یُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٢

Who excessively indulge in corruption on the earth and seek not to improve the welfare of others.”

alladhīna yuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi walā yuṣ'liḥūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٥٣

They said: "You are of those who are bewitched!

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

مَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِءَایَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٤

You are not more than a human being like us. (In order for us to believe your words), you must bring to us a (miraculous) sign if you are of the truthful."

mā anta illā basharun mith'lunā fati biāyatin in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝١٥٥

He said: "This is a she- camel (that you requested). Thus, it has the right to have a portion of the water to drink, and you have your portion of water to drink, on a day appointed.

qāla hādhihi nāqatun lahā shir'bun walakum shir'bu yawmin maʿlūmi

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥٦

Touch it not with evil lest the divine retribution of a great day would seize you.”

walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaẓīmi

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝١٥٧

However, they hamstrung it, and then they became regretful.

faʿaqarūhā fa-aṣbaḥū nādimīn

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٨

Thus, divine retribution overtook them. In (devastating ‘Thamūd’) is definitely a lesson, yet most of them (who heard about the dreadful end of ‘Thamūd’) are not inclined to believe ( in Allâh) .

fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٥٩

Indeed! Your Lord is the One who is absolutely the All- Mighty, the Most Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

9 History of Lot

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٦٠

(The people of) ‘Lot’ obstinately refused to believe the ‘Messengers’ (of Allâh).

kadhabat qawmu lūṭin l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦١

When ‘Lot’, their brother, said to them, “Will you act piously towards Allâh?

idh qāla lahum akhūhum lūṭun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٦٢

Lo! I am a Faithful ‘Messenger’ of your Lord unto you,

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٦٣

Thus, act piously towards Allâh and follow me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٤

I ask of you no rearward for (my efforts to guide you into all the truth). My reward comes from the Lord of all the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلذُّكۡرَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٥

What! Of all creatures, do you approach males

atatūna l-dhuk'rāna mina l-ʿālamīn

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ ۝١٦٦

Whilst leaving your wives that your Lord created for you? Nay! You are a transgressing people!"

watadharūna mā khalaqa lakum rabbukum min azwājikum bal antum qawmun ʿādūn

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝١٦٧

They said: “If it happens that you cease not (this nonsense), O’ Lot, you will definitely be of those who are outcast.”

qālū la-in lam tantahi yālūṭu latakūnanna mina l-mukh'rajīn

قَالَ إِنِّی لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِینَ ۝١٦٨

He said: “I definitely loathe what you do.

qāla innī liʿamalikum mina l-qālīn

رَبِّ نَجِّنِی وَأَهۡلِی مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٩

O’ my Lord, save me and my family from what they do."

rabbi najjinī wa-ahlī mimmā yaʿmalūn

فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٧٠

Thus, We saved him and his family, all,

fanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٧١

Except for an old woman (his wife) among those who remained behind.

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٧٢

Then afterward We utterly destroyed the others.

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَسَاۤءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٣

We rained on them (an evil) rain. Extremely dreadful was the rain of those who had been warned.

wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fasāa maṭaru l-mundharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٤

In (devastating lot) is definitely a lesson, yet most of them (who heard about the dreadful end of Lot) are not inclined to believe (in Allâh).

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٧٥

Indeed, Your Lord is All- Mighty, the Most Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

10 History of Shu'aib

كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ لۡءَیۡكَةِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧٦

The ‘companions of the wood’ (brushwood or thicket) obstinately refused to believe the ‘Messengers’ (of Allâh).

kadhaba aṣḥābu al'aykati l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧٧

When Shuʿayb said to them: “Will you act piously?

idh qāla lahum shuʿaybun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٧٨

Lo! I am a Faithful ‘Messenger’ of your Lord unto you,

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٧٩

Thus, act piously towards Allâh and follow me.

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٠

I ask of you no reward for (my efforts to guide you into all the truth). My reward comes from the Lord of all the worlds.

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

۞ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡسِرِینَ ۝١٨١

Give full measure, do not be of those who minify,

awfū l-kayla walā takūnū mina l-mukh'sirīn

وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمِ ۝١٨٢

And weigh (things) with the true and straight balance!

wazinū bil-qis'ṭāsi l-mus'taqīm

وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٨٣

Do not underestimate (the value of) the property of the people, or be involved in spreading corruption on the earth.

walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٨٤

Thus, act piously towards the One who created you and the former generation."

wa-ittaqū alladhī khalaqakum wal-jibilata l-awalīn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٨٥

They said: "You are of those who are bewitched!

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

وَمَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝١٨٦

You are not more than a human being like us; and we think that you are one of the liars!

wamā anta illā basharun mith'lunā wa-in naẓunnuka lamina l-kādhibīn

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا كِسَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٧

Thus, do let a piece of the sky fall upon us if you are of the truthful!"

fa-asqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina l-samāi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ رَبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٨

He said: "My Lord is fully aware of what you do."

qāla rabbī aʿlamu bimā taʿmalūn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٨٩

Thus, they obstinately refused to believe him; consequently the divine retribution of the day of overshadowing overtook them. Surely it was the divine retribution of serious day.

fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahum ʿadhābu yawmi l-ẓulati innahu kāna ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٠

In (annihilating the ‘companions of the wood’) is definitely a lesson, yet most of them (who heard about the dreadful end of the ‘companions of the wood’) are not inclined to believe ( in Allâh).

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٩١

Indeed! Your Lord is the All- Mighty, the Most Merciful.

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

11 Prophet's Opponents warned

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِیلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٩٢

Absolutely, this ( 'Qur’ān') is a ‘Revelation’ from the Lord of all the worlds.

wa-innahu latanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِینُ ۝١٩٣

The faithful Spirit (‘Gabriel’) has brought it down

nazala bihi l-rūḥu l-amīn

عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِینَ ۝١٩٤

Upon your heart, (O’ ‘Muhammad’), so that you may give warnings

bilisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīni

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیࣲّ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٩٥

In a clear Arabic tongue.

Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِی زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٩٦

It has been prophesied in the Scriptures of the ancients.

wa-innahu lafī zuburi l-awalīn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَایَةً أَن یَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰۤؤُا۟ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٩٧

Is it not a sign to them that the distinguished scholars of the ‘Children of Israel’ know it?

awalam yakun lahum āyatan an yaʿlamahu ʿulamāu banī is'rāīl

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِینَ ۝١٩٨

If We had revealed it ( 'Qur’ān') unto any other nation than the Arabs,

walaw nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-aʿjamīn

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٩

And he had recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.

faqara-ahu ʿalayhim mā kānū bihi mu'minīn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٢٠٠

This is how We let it pass unheeded though the hearts of those who keep on falling into sin.

kadhālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn

لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٢٠١

They will never believe in it until they see the painful doom.

lā yu'minūna bihi ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

فَیَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٠٢

It will come to them unexpectedly, while they lack the ability to perceive it.

fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

فَیَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ۝٢٠٣

Then they will say: "Are we going to obtain a respite?”

fayaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٢٠٤

Do they still hope for Our divine retribution to be hastened?

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِینَ ۝٢٠٥

Have you then considered if We give them enjoyment for years

afara-ayta in mattaʿnāhum sinīn

ثُمَّ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٠٦

And then there comes to them that with which they are threatened?

thumma jāahum mā kānū yūʿadūn

مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُمَتَّعُونَ ۝٢٠٧

All that which they used to enjoy will not benefit them.

mā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨

We never destroyed a town before sending a warner

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā mundhirūn

ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٠٩

To warn them. We have never been iniquitous (towards Our servants).

dhik'rā wamā kunnā ẓālimīn

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢١٠

It is not the devils who have brought down this ( 'Qur’ān').

wamā tanazzalat bihi l-shayāṭīn

وَمَا یَنۢبَغِی لَهُمۡ وَمَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٢١١

It will neither be convenient for them, nor they will be able (to produce it).

wamā yanbaghī lahum wamā yastaṭīʿūn

إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ ۝٢١٢

Surely they are completely debarred even from hearing it.

innahum ʿani l-samʿi lamaʿzūlūn

فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٢١٣

Thus, invoke not beside Allâh, any other god, lest you become of those who will be chastised.

falā tadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fatakūna mina l-muʿadhabīn

وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِیرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَ ۝٢١٤

Warn (O’ ‘Muhammad’) your tribe of near kindred (of the consequences of their sinful deeds)!

wa-andhir ʿashīrataka l-aqrabīn

وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢١٥

Lower your wing to those ‘Monotheistic Believers’ who follow you!

wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka limani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn

فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢١٦

If it happens that they fail to obey you, then say: "Indeed, I am innocent from what you are doing."

fa-in ʿaṣawka faqul innī barīon mimmā taʿmalūn

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢١٧

Depend on the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful with full trust,

watawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi l-raḥīm

ٱلَّذِی یَرَىٰكَ حِینَ تَقُومُ ۝٢١٨

Who sees you when you arise (in the midnight to pray)

alladhī yarāka ḥīna taqūm

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِی ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢١٩

And your arduous effort in prostration among those who prostrate.

wataqallubaka fī l-sājidīn

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٢٢٠

Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢٢١

Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

hal unabbi-ukum ʿalā man tanazzalu l-shayāṭīn

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٢٢٢

They descend upon every sinful impostor.

tanazzalu ʿalā kulli affākin athīmi

یُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٢٣

They give ear, but most of them are liars.

yul'qūna l-samʿa wa-aktharuhum kādhibūn

وَٱلشُّعَرَاۤءُ یَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٢٢٤

As for the poets, those who keep on falling into temptation follow them,

wal-shuʿarāu yattabiʿuhumu l-ghāwūn

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ وَادࣲ یَهِیمُونَ ۝٢٢٥

Do you not see that they wander in every valley,

alam tara annahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūn

وَأَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٢٢٦

And that they say what they do not do?

wa-annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūn

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَیَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ یَنقَلِبُونَ ۝٢٢٧

Except for those (poets) who adhere to Islamic monotheism and do righteous acts, celebrate the Praises of Allâh frequently and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged. Those who are grossly unfair and morally wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned.

illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wadhakarū l-laha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wasayaʿlamu alladhīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabin yanqalibūn
