26:1 ›
۞ طسۤمۤ ۝١
Al-Muntakhab
T. (Tuh), S. (Seen), M. (Meem) the Surah opens with these introductory letters from the Arabic Alphabet to draw attention to the miracle of the Quran which though written in the people's tongue, Cannot be emulated

26:2 ›
تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢
Al-Muntakhab
These are divine verses flowing with the precision and grace symbolic of the Book -the Quran- which is the spirit of truth that guides into all truth
til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-mubīn
26:3 ›
لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣
Al-Muntakhab
Seemingly, O Muhammad you are betaking yourself in pursuit of their -the infidels- train of thought with distress, constant regret and discontent and torturing yourself lest they should refuse credit to this divine message
laʿallaka bākhiʿun nafsaka allā yakūnū mu'minīn
26:4 ›
إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ءَایَةࣰ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَـٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِینَ ۝٤
Al-Muntakhab
If We will, We could easily send down to them from heaven a physical sign revealing to them Our Omnipotence and Authority, a sign to which they will have to bend their necks in subjugation and submission
in nasha nunazzil ʿalayhim mina l-samāi āyatan faẓallat aʿnāquhum lahā khāḍiʿīn
26:5 ›
وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٥
Al-Muntakhab
The truth is that no new divine discourse comes to them from their Creator, AL-Rahman but they habitually oppose it, turn away from it in mind and feeling and become actuated by repugnance for it
wamā yatīhim min dhik'rin mina l-raḥmāni muḥ'dathin illā kānū ʿanhu muʿ'riḍīn
26:6 ›
فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَیَأۡتِیهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰۤؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٦
Al-Muntakhab
They labelled the truth -the Quran- as falsehood and counseled deaf to it. But soon shall they realize the truth of all that has been discoursed in this Book which they hold- up to ridicule
faqad kadhabū fasayatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūn
26:7 ›
أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝٧
Al-Muntakhab
Do they not see how We made the earth a source of vegetation and made vegetal growth of like things emerge from it in varying colours with good qualities and of great advantages
awalam yaraw ilā l-arḍi kam anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi
26:8 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨
Al-Muntakhab
This is indeed emblematic of Allah's Omnipotence and Authority, but most of them -the infidels- counsel deaf to Allah's message and close their minds' eyes to all that appeals to the intellect and engages the intelligence
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:9 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٩
Al-Muntakhab
Allah, your Creator, is indeed AL-Aziz (the Almighty) and AL-Rahim, (the Merciful) Who sends spectacles and warnings and puts punishment in respite
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
2 Moses called and sent to Pharaoh
26:10 ›
وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱئۡتِ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠
Al-Muntakhab
Allah called to Mussa and commanded him Thus: "Go to the people, of Pharaoh" He said, "who are wrongful of actions"
wa-idh nādā rabbuka mūsā ani i'ti l-qawma l-ẓālimīn
26:11 ›
قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ أَلَا یَتَّقُونَ ۝١١
Al-Muntakhab
"Who seem to be unwilling to deviate into sense and for their own sake fear Allah and stop persecuting the Children of Israel"
qawma fir'ʿawna alā yattaqūn
26:12 ›
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُكَذِّبُونِ ۝١٢
Al-Muntakhab
"O Allah, my Creator," Mussa said, "I have an easy sense of the probability of being treated as someone who passes himself off as someone other than he is"
qāla rabbi innī akhāfu an yukadhibūn
26:13 ›
وَیَضِیقُ صَدۡرِی وَلَا یَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِی فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ ۝١٣
Al-Muntakhab
"And my chest becomes drawn tight and my mind and my feeling become strained and my tongue becomes restrained from free expression, therefore I pray and beseech You O Allah, my Creator, to send -The Angel Gabriel- to my brother Harun"
wayaḍīqu ṣadrī walā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa-arsil ilā hārūn
26:14 ›
وَلَهُمۡ عَلَیَّ ذَنۢبࣱ فَأَخَافُ أَن یَقۡتُلُونِ ۝١٤
Al-Muntakhab
"And the guilt of blood is at my door and I have ground for alarm for they might kill me"
walahum ʿalayya dhanbun fa-akhāfu an yaqtulūn
26:15 ›
قَالَ كَلَّاۖ فَٱذۡهَبَا بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝١٥
Al-Muntakhab
"Not at all", Allah said, "Both of you just go with Our signs evincing both Omnipotence and Authority. We will be there with you listening"
qāla kallā fa-idh'habā biāyātinā innā maʿakum mus'tamiʿūn
26:16 ›
فَأۡتِیَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦
Al-Muntakhab
"And so, both of you go to Pharaoh and say to him:" "We are bearers of the divine message sent by Allah, Creator of the worlds, the visible and the invisible, past, present and those to come"
fatiyā fir'ʿawna faqūlā innā rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:17 ›
أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٧
Al-Muntakhab
Who commands you to release the children of Israel from bondage and to let them go with us"
an arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīl
26:18 ›
قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِینَا وَلِیدࣰا وَلَبِثۡتَ فِینَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِینَ ۝١٨
Al-Muntakhab
" Did we not nurture you O Mussa, "said Pharaoh, from infancy as one of us and set you on your feet and you spent of your life among us a good number of years!"
qāla alam nurabbika fīnā walīdan walabith'ta fīnā min ʿumurika sinīn
26:19 ›
وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِی فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٩
Al-Muntakhab
And you did what you did, -the terrible crime you committed-, and you have impelled yourself to ingratitude and ungratefulness to our grace which abounds in you
wafaʿalta faʿlataka allatī faʿalta wa-anta mina l-kāfirīn
26:20 ›
قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَاۤ إِذࣰا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٢٠
Al-Muntakhab
"I did what I did then", Mussa said, when my action was not circumspect because of the web of circumstances you shaped after your own manner
qāla faʿaltuhā idhan wa-anā mina l-ḍālīn
26:21 ›
فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِی رَبِّی حُكۡمࣰا وَجَعَلَنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٢١
Al-Muntakhab
In consequence I withdrew hastily and took flight when I feared you might avenge your right. But Allah, my Creator, -knowing that the guilt did not reside in my intention- vested me with the capacity of judging rightly in matters relating to life and conduct and with the soundness of judgement in the choice of means and ends, and conferred on me the prerogative of being one of the Messengers
fafarartu minkum lammā khif'tukum fawahaba lī rabbī ḥuk'man wajaʿalanī mina l-mur'salīn
26:22 ›
وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةࣱ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَیَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٢٢
Al-Muntakhab
"And do you Pharaoh", Mussa added, "oblige me and make me feel indebted to you for reducing the children of Israel to slavery and subjecting them to bondage"
watil'ka niʿ'matun tamunnuhā ʿalayya an ʿabbadtta banī is'rāīl
26:23 ›
قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٣
Al-Muntakhab
Pharaoh asked: "and who is Allah, the Creator of the world"
qāla fir'ʿawnu wamā rabbu l-ʿālamīn
26:24 ›
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِینَ ۝٢٤
Al-Muntakhab
"The Ilah and Creator of the heavens and the earth" Mussa said, "and of all that is in between if you and your people care to know the truth"
qāla rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīn
26:25 ›
قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٢٥
Al-Muntakhab
"Do you hear that!" pharaoh said to those around him
qāla liman ḥawlahu alā tastamiʿūn
26:26 ›
قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٦
Al-Muntakhab
"He is Allah", said Mussa, "your Creator and the Creator of your ancestry and of all those included in your genealogical tree"
qāla rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīn
26:27 ›
قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٢٧
Al-Muntakhab
"Your Messenger", Pharaoh said to his people, "who has been sent to you is indeed out of his mind and he is carried away by enthusiasm or desire"
qāla inna rasūlakumu alladhī ur'sila ilaykum lamajnūnu
26:28 ›
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨
Al-Muntakhab
"Not only that" Mussa Added, "but He is Allah, the Creator of the East and the West and of all that lies between them if you really care to deviate into sense."
qāla rabbu l-mashriqi wal-maghribi wamā baynahumā in kuntum taʿqilūn
26:29 ›
قَالَ لَىِٕنِ ٱتَّخَذۡتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَیۡرِی لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسۡجُونِینَ ۝٢٩
Al-Muntakhab
"Let me warn you", Pharaoh said to Mussa, "should you take an Ilah besides me, I will shut you up with those shut up in the grim confines of the dungeon"
qāla la-ini ittakhadhta ilāhan ghayrī la-ajʿalannaka mina l-masjūnīn
26:30 ›
قَالَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَیۡءࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٣٠
Al-Muntakhab
"Even if I present you", Mussa said, "with a divine sign convincing the mind and manifests forth the truth"
qāla awalaw ji'tuka bishayin mubīni
26:31 ›
قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣١
Al-Muntakhab
"Then exhibit it to view", Pharaoh said, "if indeed you are telling the truth"
qāla fati bihi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn
26:32 ›
فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٣٢
Al-Muntakhab
And there did Mussa cast his staff on the ground and instantaneously it was transformed into a serpent personified
fa-alqā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thuʿ'bānun mubīnu
26:33 ›
وَنَزَعَ یَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِیَ بَیۡضَاۤءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝٣٣
Al-Muntakhab
And he drew his hand from the folds of his garment and there it was instantaneously transfigured in a radiance of white divine light
wanazaʿa yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍāu lilnnāẓirīn
3 Moses and Enchanters
26:34 ›
قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٣٤
Al-Muntakhab
There and then Pharaoh said to the nobility around him: "Indeed, this man is a necromancer skilled in magic, and the works of the devil are clearly manifest in him"
qāla lil'mala-i ḥawlahu inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīmu
26:35 ›
یُرِیدُ أَن یُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ ۝٣٥
Al-Muntakhab
"He means", Pharaoh added, "To oust you people of your land and drive you away". "Therefore, what course of action do you suggest we should take in the face of this problem!"
yurīdu an yukh'rijakum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihi famādhā tamurūn
26:36 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٣٦
Al-Muntakhab
They -the people- suggested to Pharaoh that they should adapt themselves and conform to the time and circumstances and avoid dispute so as to gain time, and they said: "the time to degrade and defeat him has not come yet. Meanwhile, send O Pharaoh some of your recruits to the cities to gather to themselves the multitude of men who practice magic"
qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-ib'ʿath fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn
26:37 ›
یَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٧
Al-Muntakhab
And ask them to bring back those who are skilled in the art of necromancy
yatūka bikulli saḥḥārin ʿalīmi
26:38 ›
فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٣٨
Al-Muntakhab
And the magicians were assembled on their known Festive Day
fajumiʿa l-saḥaratu limīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi
26:39 ›
وَقِیلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٣٩
Al-Muntakhab
And the people were urged by one another to attend the event so that all of them would come into conformity with the wish that all be present. Expressing their thoughts in words, they added
waqīla lilnnāsi hal antum muj'tamiʿūn
26:40 ›
لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤٠
Al-Muntakhab
"We accept the authority of the magicians should they win and espouse their opinions and their cause."
laʿallanā nattabiʿu l-saḥarata in kānū humu l-ghālibīn
26:41 ›
فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَىِٕنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤١
Al-Muntakhab
And when the sorcerers congregated to action they said to Pharaoh: "Assuredly, we will be rewarded should we be the winners"
falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qālū lifir'ʿawna a-inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn
26:42 ›
قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٢
Al-Muntakhab
"Yes indeed," Pharaoh said, "and you shall be in a position that entitles you to be among my retinue"
qāla naʿam wa-innakum idhan lamina l-muqarabīn
26:43 ›
قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٤٣
Al-Muntakhab
Mussa said to the magicians, "Cast upon the ground all that you wish to cast"
qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn
26:44 ›
فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِیَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝٤٤
Al-Muntakhab
And as they were casting their ropes and rods, they invoked -their god- Pharaoh in supplication for aid and success. They prayed: By Pharaoh's might we will be the winners
fa-alqaw ḥibālahum waʿiṣiyyahum waqālū biʿizzati fir'ʿawna innā lanaḥnu l-ghālibūn
26:45 ›
فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝٤٥
Al-Muntakhab
And when Mussa cast his staff, it counter-worked their ingenious expedience and swallowed all that they cast upon the ground of fraudulent devices of a mean and deceptive kind
fa-alqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn
26:46 ›
فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٤٦
Al-Muntakhab
Overwhelmed with wonder, the sorcerers bowed to the ground in comely order, praise and admiration
fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn
26:47 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٧
Al-Muntakhab
And they declared submission: "We conform our will", they said, " to Allah's will and we surrender ourselves to Him, the Creator of the worlds,"
qālū āmannā birabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:48 ›
رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝٤٨
Al-Muntakhab
"The Ilah of Mussa and Harun"
rabbi mūsā wahārūn
26:49 ›
قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٩
Al-Muntakhab
And here said Pharaoh to them: "Have you yielded to his claims and surrendered yourselves to his Ilah without my permission!" "This is indeed," he added, a deceitful plan designed by your master who taught you magic and you shall bear the consequences and soon come to know how heavily you shall pay for this!" "I will amputate your hands and your feet on opposite sides and I will have you all crucified."
qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra falasawfa taʿlamūna la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn
26:50 ›
قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَیۡرَۖ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝٥٠
Al-Muntakhab
"We are not afraid of this," they said, "We have enough sense to know what we are doing, we welcome your decision which shall haste us unto Allah Who might confer on us the glorious privilege of martyrdom
qālū lā ḍayra innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn
26:51 ›
إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَاۤ أَن كُنَّاۤ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥١
Al-Muntakhab
"In fact", they added, "our only hope is that Allah, our Creator extends His mercy to us and forgives us our sins and our sinful acts of fraudulent magic for being foremost in deviating into sense and acknowledging His supreme Sovereignty, Omnipotence and Authority."
innā naṭmaʿu an yaghfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwala l-mu'minīn
4 Moses delivered, Pharaoh drowned
26:52 ›
۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۤ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ۝٥٢
Al-Muntakhab
Meanwhile We inspired Mussa to conduct My servants -the Israelites- by night to the sea and We said to him: "Be sure you shall be followed."
wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī innakum muttabaʿūn
26:53 ›
فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٥٣
Al-Muntakhab
Pharaoh sent Messengers to all his cities to call up the people to organize themselves for the hindrance and the defeat of Mussa and his people by contrary measures"
fa-arsala fir'ʿawnu fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn
26:54 ›
إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِیلُونَ ۝٥٤
Al-Muntakhab
He said to them: "Mussa and his people -the Israelites- are only some few contemptible body"
inna hāulāi lashir'dhimatun qalīlūn
26:55 ›
وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَاۤىِٕظُونَ ۝٥٥
Al-Muntakhab
"And they provoked Our anger and came within the measure of Our wrath which is conducive to annihilation"
wa-innahum lanā laghāiẓūn
26:56 ›
وَإِنَّا لَجَمِیعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ ۝٥٦
Al-Muntakhab
"And We are all cautious and on our guard"
wa-innā lajamīʿun ḥādhirūn
26:57 ›
فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٥٧
Al-Muntakhab
Wherefore We compelled them to the natural result of tyranny, disobedience and transgression. We expelled them from the earthly paradise they once possessed and from the land of orchards and springs
fa-akhrajnāhum min jannātin waʿuyūni
26:58 ›
وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٥٨
Al-Muntakhab
the land of treasures and homes and accommodations so splendid
wakunūzin wamaqāmin karīmi
26:59 ›
كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩
Al-Muntakhab
And so it was, and We made the land inheritable by the Children of Israel to whom We conveyed the right of the property after We drowned Pharaoh and his people
kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā banī is'rāīl
26:60 ›
فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِینَ ۝٦٠
Al-Muntakhab
They followed Mussa and his people at sunrise
fa-atbaʿūhum mush'riqīn
26:61 ›
فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٰۤءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ ۝٦١
Al-Muntakhab
And when the two bodies of men came within each other's range of sight, the compatriots of Mussa exclaimed: " We are evidently overtaken"
falammā tarāā l-jamʿāni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamud'rakūn
26:62 ›
قَالَ كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٦٢
Al-Muntakhab
"Not at all", Mussa said, "Allah, my Creator overshadows me with His gracious wing; He is by my side to guide me as He will."
qāla kallā inna maʿiya rabbī sayahdīn
26:63 ›
فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٦٣
Al-Muntakhab
We inspired Mussa to strike the sea with his staff and there did the sea split into two enormous divisions, each partition as immense as a huge mountain
fa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-infalaqa fakāna kullu fir'qin kal-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīm
26:64 ›
وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٤
Al-Muntakhab
And We induced the others -Pharaoh and his people- to tail Mussa and his people who were then in the footpath
wa-azlafnā thamma l-ākharīn
26:65 ›
وَأَنجَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٦٥
Al-Muntakhab
And We delivered Mussa and all those with him
wa-anjaynā mūsā waman maʿahu ajmaʿīn
26:66 ›
ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٦
Al-Muntakhab
And We drowned all the others -Pharaoh and all those with him
thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn
26:67 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٧
Al-Muntakhab
This is indeed emblematic of Allah's Omnipotence and Authority but most of them denied Allah, the Creator.(to Pharaoh' people Allah was the Pharaoh himself)
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
5 History of Abraham
26:68 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٦٨
Al-Muntakhab
And Allah, your creator, is AL-Aziz and AL-Rahim, indee
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
26:69 ›
وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٦٩
Al-Muntakhab
And relate to the people O Muhammad the narrative of Ibrahim with his father
wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a ib'rāhīm
26:70 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٠
Al-Muntakhab
He asked his father and his people: "What do you people worship?"
idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mā taʿbudūn
26:71 ›
قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِینَ ۝٧١
Al-Muntakhab
"We worship idols" they said, and adore them with appropriate acts and rites and we are attached to them and unmoved in mind
qālū naʿbudu aṣnāman fanaẓallu lahā ʿākifīn
26:72 ›
قَالَ هَلۡ یَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ ۝٧٢
Al-Muntakhab
"Do they hear you", Ibrahim asked, "when you praise them or supplicate!"
qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūn
26:73 ›
أَوۡ یَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَضُرُّونَ ۝٧٣
Al-Muntakhab
"Or do they profit you or hurt!"
aw yanfaʿūnakum aw yaḍurrūn
26:74 ›
قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٤
Al-Muntakhab
"But", they said, "this is exactly the system of faith and worship our fathers adopted."
qālū bal wajadnā ābāanā kadhālika yafʿalūn
26:75 ›
قَالَ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٥
Al-Muntakhab
"Do you see", Ibrahim said, "all those you adored and revered as objects of worship!"
qāla afara-aytum mā kuntum taʿbudūn
26:76 ›
أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ ۝٧٦
Al-Muntakhab
"And you and your fathers and your ancestors treated with respect and devotion!"
antum waābāukumu l-aqdamūn
26:77 ›
فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّیۤ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٧
Al-Muntakhab
They are adversaries who might obtain their end and therefore enemies to me but not Allah, the Creator of the worlds, the visible and the invisible, past, present and those to come."
fa-innahum ʿaduwwun lī illā rabba l-ʿālamīn
26:78 ›
ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَنِی فَهُوَ یَهۡدِینِ ۝٧٨
Al-Muntakhab
"-The Creator- Who brought me into existence and it is He Who guides me to the truth and to the path of righteousness."
alladhī khalaqanī fahuwa yahdīn
26:79 ›
وَٱلَّذِی هُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِی وَیَسۡقِینِ ۝٧٩
Al-Muntakhab
It is He Who provides me with victuals to eat and drinkables (to drink)
wa-alladhī huwa yuṭ'ʿimunī wayasqīn
26:80 ›
وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ یَشۡفِینِ ۝٨٠
Al-Muntakhab
"And when I fall sick, it is He Who restores me to health"
wa-idhā mariḍ'tu fahuwa yashfīn
26:81 ›
وَٱلَّذِی یُمِیتُنِی ثُمَّ یُحۡیِینِ ۝٨١
Al-Muntakhab
"And it is He Who determines the moment and the cause of my death and occasions my resurrection and restoration to life"
wa-alladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥ'yīn
26:82 ›
وَٱلَّذِیۤ أَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لِی خَطِیۤءَتِی یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٨٢
Al-Muntakhab
-The Creator- Whom I hope will relent and quit me all His debt and will forgive me my wrongful actions when I have audience of Him in Day of Judgement"
wa-alladhī aṭmaʿu an yaghfira lī khaṭīatī yawma l-dīn
26:83 ›
رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی حُكۡمࣰا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِی بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٣
Al-Muntakhab
And to Him I express my thoughts in my invocatory prayer, thus: "Confer on me O Allah, my Creator, wisdom to help me judge rightly in matters relating to physical and spiritual life and to impart to me soundness of judgement in the choice of means and ends, and unite me, O Allah, with the society of those in whose hearts reigns piety"
rabbi hab lī ḥuk'man wa-alḥiq'nī bil-ṣāliḥīn
26:84 ›
وَٱجۡعَل لِّی لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٨٤
Al-Muntakhab
"And furnish me O Allah, my Creator, with a civil tongue uttering the truth that guides into all truth and is believed among posterity"
wa-ij'ʿal lī lisāna ṣid'qin fī l-ākhirīn
26:85 ›
وَٱجۡعَلۡنِی مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨٥
Al-Muntakhab
"And if you destine me I will be one of those inheriting the Garden of the supreme bliss and blessedness"
wa-ij'ʿalnī min warathati jannati l-naʿīm
26:86 ›
وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِیۤ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٨٦
Al-Muntakhab
"And extend O Allah my Creator, Your mercy and forgiveness lo my father who was lost in the maze of error". (A prayer invoked by Ibrahim before he realized that his father was an enemy to Allah)
wa-igh'fir li-abī innahu kāna mina l-ḍālīn
26:87 ›
وَلَا تُخۡزِنِی یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٨٧
Al-Muntakhab
"And do not confound me nor occasion me to fall from grace in Day of Judgement,"
walā tukh'zinī yawma yub'ʿathūn
26:88 ›
یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ ۝٨٨
Al-Muntakhab
"The Day when neither wealth nor progeny shall be of advantage."
yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun walā banūn
26:89 ›
إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمࣲ ۝٨٩
Al-Muntakhab
"Except him who comes to the audience of Allah with his heart in its right place, heartened or filled with devotion"
illā man atā l-laha biqalbin salīmi
26:90 ›
وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٩٠
Al-Muntakhab
This is the Day when Paradise shall be brought quite near to these in whose hearts reigned piety
wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīn
26:91 ›
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِیمُ لِلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٩١
Al-Muntakhab
And Hell is projected for those who were led by the nose to the maze of error and spent their days in vanity
waburrizati l-jaḥīmu lil'ghāwīn
26:92 ›
وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٩٢
Al-Muntakhab
They shall be asked: "Where now are those you revered and adored with appropriate acts and rites"
waqīla lahum ayna mā kuntum taʿbudūn
26:93 ›
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ یَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَنتَصِرُونَ ۝٩٣
Al-Muntakhab
" The gods you revered and venerated besides Allah!" Do they afford you help or can they even help themselves!"
min dūni l-lahi hal yanṣurūnakum aw yantaṣirūn
26:94 ›
فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِیهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٩٤
Al-Muntakhab
There and then shall they -the infidels- be cast in Hell headlong one batch after another along with those who wasted their days in vanity
fakub'kibū fīhā hum wal-ghāwūn
26:95 ›
وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِیسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٩٥
Al-Muntakhab
And added to them shall be those who served Iblis AL-Shaytan (Satan) all into one gathering and in one place
wajunūdu ib'līsa ajmaʿūn
26:96 ›
قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٩٦
Al-Muntakhab
And when all have been thronged -in Hell- and have exchanged angry altercation, they -the infidels- shall express their thoughts in words
qālū wahum fīhā yakhtaṣimūn
26:97 ›
تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٧
Al-Muntakhab
"By Allah", they say, "we wandered indeed from the path of rectitude and were lost in the maze of error"
tal-lahi in kunnā lafī ḍalālin mubīni
26:98 ›
إِذۡ نُسَوِّیكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٨
Al-Muntakhab
"We have equalized you -false gods- with Allah, Creator of the worlds"
idh nusawwīkum birabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:99 ›
وَمَاۤ أَضَلَّنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٩٩
Al-Muntakhab
"And they add:" no one led us by the nose to the maze of error but the wicked who were given to sin and steeped in crime"
wamā aḍallanā illā l-muj'rimūn
26:100 ›
فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِینَ ۝١٠٠
Al-Muntakhab
"And now", they will exclaim, "no one can defend us nor shall we find intercessors who would interpose on our behalf"
famā lanā min shāfiʿīn
26:101 ›
وَلَا صَدِیقٍ حَمِیمࣲ ۝١٠١
Al-Muntakhab
"Nor do we find one who is joined to us in mutual benevolence and intimacy"
walā ṣadīqin ḥamīmi
26:102 ›
فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٢
Al-Muntakhab
"If only", they say, "we could be given another chance of life below we would be among those who exercise low submissive obeisance to Allah and entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Him"
falaw anna lanā karratan fanakūna mina l-mu'minīn
26:103 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣
Al-Muntakhab
This is indeed emblematic of Allah's Omnipotence and Authority but most of them deny Allah Who brought them into existence
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:104 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

Allah, your Creator, is indeed AL-Aziz and AL-Rahim
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
26:105 ›
كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٠٥
Al-Muntakhab
Just as averse were the people of Nuh, they declined to accept Allah's message basically the same message conveyed by all the Messengers of Allah before and after Nuh, therefore he who rejects Nuh's message has in fact rejected all Allah's messengers and they suspected the Messengers of falsehood
kadhabat qawmu nūḥin l-mur'salīn

26:106 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٠٦
Al-Muntakhab
Their brother Nuh said to them: "Will you not keep in awe of Allah, your Creator, and entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Him
idh qāla lahum akhūhum nūḥun alā tattaqūn
26:107 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٠٧
Al-Muntakhab
"I come to you", he added, "with a message Allah has entrusted to me and here do I relate it to you in honour and sincerity"
innī lakum rasūlun amīnu
26:108 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٠٨
Al-Muntakhab
"A message exacting your reverence for Allah and obedience to me"
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:109 ›
وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٩
Al-Muntakhab
"I do not", he said, charge you a price for imparting to you Allah's disclosures of divine knowledge, wisdom and practical divinity. My reward rests in the hands of Allah, the Creator of the worlds, the visible and the invisible, past, present and those to come"
wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:110 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١١٠
Al-Muntakhab
"And so revere Him and entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Him and obey me"
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:111 ›
۞ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ ۝١١١
Al-Muntakhab
They said to Nuh: "Shall we submit to you or believe in you and conform to your desire when it is only the contemptible who espoused your cause"
qālū anu'minu laka wa-ittabaʿaka l-ardhalūn
26:112 ›
قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِی بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٢
Al-Muntakhab
"But how would I know", said Nuh, "what they were doing earlier or whether or not they had a purpose moving them and inviting their minds to the volition of conforming to Islam"
qāla wamā ʿil'mī bimā kānū yaʿmalūn
26:113 ›
إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّیۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١١٣
Al-Muntakhab
"Their case", he added, "shall only be judged by Allah, my Creator, in Whose hands rests the authoritative decision, if only you could apprehend matters with your senses"
in ḥisābuhum illā ʿalā rabbī law tashʿurūn
26:114 ›
وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٤
Al-Muntakhab
"Nor would I dismiss those who conformed their will to Allah's will"
wamā anā biṭāridi l-mu'minīn
26:115 ›
إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٥
Al-Muntakhab
"I am only", he added, "a spectacle and a warning"
in anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu
26:116 ›
قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِینَ ۝١١٦
Al-Muntakhab
They said; "We warn you Nuh", "unless you stop your course of action you shall be stoned to death"
qālū la-in lam tantahi yānūḥu latakūnanna mina l-marjūmīn
26:117 ›
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی كَذَّبُونِ ۝١١٧
Al-Muntakhab
And there Nuh prayed: "My people, O Allah, my Creator, disbelieved me and refused credence to Your message"
qāla rabbi inna qawmī kadhabūn
26:118 ›
فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰا وَنَجِّنِی وَمَن مَّعِیَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨
Al-Muntakhab
"Judge O Allah", he prayed, "and defend my cause which is the heart of your purpose and decide between me and them in Your way, (for You take the matters of fact as they come and circumstance them after Your own manner) and save me and those with me who conformed to Islam"
fa-if'taḥ baynī wabaynahum fatḥan wanajjinī waman maʿiya mina l-mu'minīn
26:119 ›
فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١١٩
Al-Muntakhab
And there, We saved him along with all those in his society on board the loaded Ark
fa-anjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn
26:120 ›
ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝١٢٠
Al-Muntakhab
And We drowned all the others who remained behind
thumma aghraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīn
26:121 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢١
Al-Muntakhab

26:122 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٢٢
Al-Muntakhab
And Allah, your Creator, is indeed the AL-Aziz and AL-Rahim
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
26:123 ›
كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٌ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣
Al-Muntakhab
Just as averse were the people of 'Aad -the 'Aadites- who declined to accept Allah's message and those who conveyed the message
kadhabat ʿādun l-mur'salīn
26:124 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤
Al-Muntakhab
Their brother Hud urged them to what is good and laudable. He said to them: "Will you not keep in awe of Allah, your Creator, and entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Him!"
idh qāla lahum akhūhum hūdun alā tattaqūn
26:125 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٢٥
Al-Muntakhab
"I am," he added, "A Messenger entrusted with a divine message and here do I relate it to you in honour and sincerity"
innī lakum rasūlun amīnu
26:126 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٢٦
Al-Muntakhab
"A message exacting your reverence for Allah and obedience to me"
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:127 ›
وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢٧
Al-Muntakhab
"I do not charge you a price", he said, "for imparting to you Allah's disclosures of divine knowledge, wisdom and practical divinity. My reward rests at the hands of Allah, The Creator of the worlds"
wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:128 ›
أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِیعٍ ءَایَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ ۝١٢٨
Al-Muntakhab
"Do you erect buildings", he added, "on the top of every mount and every height, mansions and stately buildings standing in the landscape, conspicuous to view as though they are landmarks (yet not as a guide nor a mark of an event) serving no useful purpose and of no avail!"
atabnūna bikulli rīʿin āyatan taʿbathūn
26:129 ›
وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ ۝١٢٩
Al-Muntakhab
"And you take for yourselves palatial structures as though they will protect you and exempt you from paying nature's debt and help you live forever"
watattakhidhūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum takhludūn
26:130 ›
وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ۝١٣٠
Al-Muntakhab
"And when you strike, justly or unjustly, you strike at the root"
wa-idhā baṭashtum baṭashtum jabbārīn
26:131 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٣١
Al-Muntakhab
"And so fear Allah Whose divine nature exacts your reverence and obey me"
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:132 ›
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٢
Al-Muntakhab
"And entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Him Who made all His grace, as you very well know, abound in you"
wa-ittaqū alladhī amaddakum bimā taʿlamūn
26:133 ›
أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٣٣
Al-Muntakhab
"He graced you with cattle and progeny"
amaddakum bi-anʿāmin wabanīn
26:134 ›
وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٣٤
Al-Muntakhab
"And with orchards and flowing springs"
wajannātin waʿuyūni
26:135 ›
إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥
Al-Muntakhab
"In fact", he said, "I fear for you an immense punishment on a momentous Day"
innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi
26:136 ›
قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦
Al-Muntakhab
But they insolently and defiantly said to him: "Whether you exhort Us O Hud or you do not, it is to us one and the same"
qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn
26:137 ›
إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧
Al-Muntakhab
"This is nothing", they said, "other than the customary manner of thinking of those of old used often enough that it bred the same habit in you"
in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn
26:138 ›
وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨
Al-Muntakhab
"Nor, as you think, shall We be subjected to a retributive punishment"
wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn
26:139 ›
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩
Al-Muntakhab
And they disbelieved him and refused credence to Our message wherefore We reduced them to a useless form. This is indeed emblematic of Allah's Omnipotence and Authority, but most of them denied Allah Who brought them into existence
fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:140 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠
Al-Muntakhab
And Allah, your Creator, is indeed AL-Aziz and AL-Rahim
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

26:141 ›
كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١
Al-Muntakhab
And just as averse were the people of Thamud (the Thamudites) who refused to accept Allah's message and Messengers
kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn
26:142 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢
Al-Muntakhab
Their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not listen to exhortation and keep in awe of Allah, your Creator, and entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Him"
idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn
26:143 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣
Al-Muntakhab
"I am", he added, a Messenger entrusted with a divine message and here do I relate it to you in honour and sincerity"
innī lakum rasūlun amīnu
26:144 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٤٤
Al-Muntakhab
"A message exacting your reverence for Allah and obedience to me"
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:145 ›
وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٤٥
Al-Muntakhab

"Do you think", he said, "you will be left to form imaginary visions of unrealities expecting to enjoy the grace of Allah which abounds in you without being tried"
atut'rakūna fī mā hāhunā āminīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝١٤٧
Al-Muntakhab
"You live in splendour, you hold in possession orchards and flowing springs"
fī jannātin waʿuyūni
26:148 ›
وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِیمࣱ ۝١٤٨
Al-Muntakhab
"And vegetal growth and-date palms whose enclosed spadix carries tender delicious and easily digestible fruits"
wazurūʿin wanakhlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmu
26:149 ›
وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا فَـٰرِهِینَ ۝١٤٩
Al-Muntakhab
"And you skillfully carve the mountains into homes wherein you make abode"
watanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan fārihīn
26:150 ›
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٥٠
Al-Muntakhab
"A divine grace which exacting your reverence for Allah and obedience to me"
fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn
26:151 ›
وَلَا تُطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٥١
Al-Muntakhab
"And I advise you not to comply with the command of those who are extravagant in their accounts of themselves nor yield to their irreverent principles and authority"
walā tuṭīʿū amra l-mus'rifīn
26:152 ›
ٱلَّذِینَ یُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا یُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٢
Al-Muntakhab
They create discord on earth and mischief is natural to them and never do they attempt reform or change for the better
alladhīna yuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi walā yuṣ'liḥūn
26:153 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٥٣
Al-Muntakhab
Yet the response of his people was pitifully unfavourable. They said to him: "You are one of those influenced by witchcraft and therefore bewitched"
qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn
26:154 ›
مَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِءَایَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٤
Al-Muntakhab
"You are only a mortal like us," they said, "wherefore you could not be singled out for the prerogative of prophethood, and if you are indeed declaring the truth then present us with a divine sign convincing our minds and proving the conclusion"
mā anta illā basharun mith'lunā fati biāyatin in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn
26:155 ›
قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝١٥٥
Al-Muntakhab
"This", he said, "is a she-camel which is entitled to a share of the drinking water just as you are entitled to a share. She is to have her share on a certain day and you have yours on an alternate day"
qāla hādhihi nāqatun lahā shir'bun walakum shir'bu yawmin maʿlūmi
26:156 ›
وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥٦
Al-Muntakhab
"And", he added, "you are warned not to harm her lest you suffer the torment laid upon the damned on a momentous Day"
walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaẓīmi
26:157 ›
فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝١٥٧
Al-Muntakhab
Nevertheless they defiantly disabled her by cutting her hamstring muscles. (Their outrage on consecrated objects invited their ruin) which led to pining regrets and vain repentances
faʿaqarūhā fa-aṣbaḥū nādimīn
26:158 ›
فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٨
Al-Muntakhab
They were overtaken by Allah's wrath which spoke thunder. This is indeed emblematic of His Omnipotence and Authority but most of them denied Him Who brought them into existence
fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:159 ›
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٥٩
Al-Muntakhab
Allah, your Creator, is indeed AL-Aziz and AL-Rahim
wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
9 History of Lot
26:160 ›
كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٦٠
Al-Muntakhab
Just as averse were the people of Lut. They declined to accept Allah's message and those who conveyed the message
kadhabat qawmu lūṭin l-mur'salīn
26:161 ›
إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦١
Al-Muntakhab
Their brother Lut tried hard to induce them to open their hearts' ears and their minds' eyes and listen to exhortation. Entertaining expectation of something desired, he -Lut- said to them: "Will you not keep in awe of Allah and entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Him!"
idh qāla lahum akhūhum lūṭun alā tattaqūn
26:162 ›
إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٦٢
Al-Muntakhab

أَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلذُّكۡرَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٥

"Do you realize what you are doing"! he added "of all intellectual created beings, you gratify your sexual appetite by copulating the males"
atatūna l-dhuk'rāna mina l-ʿālamīn
26:166 ›
وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ ۝١٦٦
Al-Muntakhab
"And you forsake your natural mates who are created by Him , for the purpose based upon the innate moral feeling of mankind". In fact you are a people who have defiantly transgressed the divine as well as the moral laws"
watadharūna mā khalaqa lakum rabbukum min azwājikum bal antum qawmun ʿādūn
26:167 ›
قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝١٦٧
Al-Muntakhab
"We warn you Lut", they said, "unless you change your way of thinking and stop -this course of action- you shall be among those ousted from this town and ejected from our society"
qālū la-in lam tantahi yālūṭu latakūnanna mina l-mukh'rajīn
26:168 ›
قَالَ إِنِّی لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِینَ ۝١٦٨
Al-Muntakhab
"I am one of those", he said, "who simply detest and abhor your behaviour and your doings which make me shrink with horror"
qāla innī liʿamalikum mina l-qālīn
26:169 ›
رَبِّ نَجِّنِی وَأَهۡلِی مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٩
Al-Muntakhab
And he prayed "I pray and beseech You O Allah, my Creator, to rescue me and my family from these people who have no horror of immorality, and save us from their social evil"
rabbi najjinī wa-ahlī mimmā yaʿmalūn
26:170 ›
فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٧٠
Al-Muntakhab
We delivered him along with his family from the people who were wrongful of actions
fanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn
26:171 ›
إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٧١
Al-Muntakhab
except a woman who had been carried through the stealing steps of age to advanced life, who remained with those behind. (Lut.'s wife who approved this evil practice)
illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn
26:172 ›
ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٧٢
Al-Muntakhab
And We reduced the rest to a useless form
thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn
26:173 ›
وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَسَاۤءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٣
Al-Muntakhab
We poured down upon them a direful rain (of fire and brimstone) and how evil and devastating was the rain on the heads of those who defiantly ignored Allah's warning
wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fasāa maṭaru l-mundharīn
26:174 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٤
Al-Muntakhab
This is indeed emblematic of Allah's Omnipotence and Authority but most of them denied Allah Who brought them into existenc
inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn
26:175 ›

Just as averse were the woodlanders -Madyanites- who declined to accept Allah's message and those who conveyed the message

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧٧
Al-Muntakhab

"Dispense to the full", he said, "the quantity ascertained by measuring if you happen to give or sell by a standard measure and be not of those who serve their purpose and accomplish it by means of fraud, dishonesty and deception"
awfū l-kayla walā takūnū mina l-mukh'sirīn
26:182 ›
وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمِ ۝١٨٢
Al-Muntakhab
"And if you are using the method of weighing then you are enjoined to use an accurate and precise balance conforming to a standard and an exemplar of truth and equity"
wazinū bil-qis'ṭāsi l-mus'taqīm
26:183 ›
وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٨٣
Al-Muntakhab
"And crown yourselves with equity", he said, "and do not scant peoples' goods and chattels, chattels personal and chattels real an
walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn
26:184 ›
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٨٤
Al-Muntakhab
"And keep in awe of Allah and entertain the profound reverence dutiful to Him Who brought you and brought all those who came to this world into existence before you"
wa-ittaqū alladhī khalaqakum wal-jibilata l-awalīn
26:185 ›
قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٨٥
Al-Muntakhab

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا كِسَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٧
Al-Muntakhab
"And if you are not, and you are indeed declaring the truth, then let us see if you can cause a piece of heaven to fall upon us in the form of discs of cumuli"
fa-asqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina l-samāi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn
26:188 ›
قَالَ رَبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٨
Al-Muntakhab
"Allah, my Creator", Shu'aib said "is Omnipresent and He is fully cognizant of all that you do"
qāla rabbī aʿlamu bimā taʿmalūn
26:189 ›
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٨٩
Al-Muntakhab
They disbelieved him and refused credence to Our message wherefore were they seized with a wave of suffocating heat followed by a cumulus which overshadowed them and gave them a rainbow of hope of relief. But it was a joy in which they could not rejoice. It spoke thunder and reduced them to a useless form. It was indeed a torment that befell them on a momentous day
fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahum ʿadhābu yawmi l-ẓulati innahu kāna ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi
26:190 ›
إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٠
Al-Muntakhab

26:191 ›

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm
11 Prophet's Opponents warned
26:192 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِیلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٩٢
Al-Muntakhab
And this Quran is indeed a disclosure of divine knowledge, wisdom and practical divinity sent down to man from Allah, the Creator of the worlds, the visible and the invisible, past, present and those to come
wa-innahu latanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn
26:193 ›
نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِینُ ۝١٩٣
Al-Muntakhab
It is brought down by Allah's errand, the faithful and honourable Holy Spirit Jibril (Gabriel
nazala bihi l-rūḥu l-amīn
26:194 ›
عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِینَ ۝١٩٤
Al-Muntakhab
Who imparted it O Muhammad to your innermost thoughts and to the repository of your consciousness so that you serve as a spectacle and a warning
bilisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīni
26:195 ›
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیࣲّ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٩٥
Al-Muntakhab
It -the Quran- is revealed in plain Arabic literary form
Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin
26:196 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِی زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٩٦
Al-Muntakhab
And it was indeed referred to and proclaimed in the Scriptures of earlier generations
wa-innahu lafī zuburi l-awalīn
26:197 ›
أَوَ لَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَایَةً أَن یَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰۤؤُا۟ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٩٧
Al-Muntakhab
Is it not an attestation to its credit and a ground for belief that the learned among the Children of Israel do know it is the truth
awalam yakun lahum āyatan an yaʿlamahu ʿulamāu banī is'rāīl
26:198 ›
وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِینَ ۝١٩٨
Al-Muntakhab
Had We revealed it to a people -characterized with dullness of comprehension or a people slow of perception or foreign to the Arabic tongue
walaw nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-aʿjamīn
26:199 ›
فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٩
Al-Muntakhab
And had the prophet read it to them, they would not have understood it nor welcomed it or given credence to it
faqara-ahu ʿalayhim mā kānū bihi mu'minīn
26:200 ›
كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٢٠٠
Al-Muntakhab
Thus do We picture it in the minds and hearts of the sinful who grow daily more and more wicked
kadhālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn
26:201 ›
لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٢٠١
Al-Muntakhab
Who shall not acknowledge it as the truth personified until they have had the wind in their faces and they are face to face with the promised punishment here, at the hands of the Muslims or with the torment laid upon the damned Hereafter
lā yu'minūna bihi ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm
26:202 ›
فَیَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٠٢
Al-Muntakhab
A punishment that surprises them and catches them unawares and reduces them to ruin
fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn
26:203 ›
فَیَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ۝٢٠٣
Al-Muntakhab
There and then they shall change their minds with regard to past action and conduct and express their hope which springs eternal in their breasts and say: "can we be given respite so that we corrects all the wrongs"
fayaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn
26:204 ›
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٢٠٤
Al-Muntakhab
Do they mockingly and defiantly wish to hasten Our retributive punishment
afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn
26:205 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِینَ ۝٢٠٥
Al-Muntakhab
Do you see O Muhammad into what would happen if We make all grace abound in them and they enjoy it for years
afara-ayta in mattaʿnāhum sinīn
26:206 ›
ثُمَّ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٠٦
Al-Muntakhab
Then they are suddenly seized with what they were promised of retributive punishment
thumma jāahum mā kānū yūʿadūn
26:207 ›
مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُمَتَّعُونَ ۝٢٠٧
Al-Muntakhab
There and then never shall their possessions and the use af all that afforded them pleasure and advantages avail them or defend them against Allah's decreed punishment
mā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūn
26:208 ›
وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨
Al-Muntakhab
In fact We never reduced a town with its inhabitants to ruin before they have had their spectacles and warnings -and they did not listen-
wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā mundhirūn
26:209 ›
ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٠٩
Al-Muntakhab
We mercifully sent warnings to make them deviate into sense and wake up to the fact that there is Ilah, the Creator, of the worlds, Who exacts reverence and veneration and obedience from all created beings. And never did We fail lo observe the principles of justice and fair dealing
dhik'rā wamā kunnā ẓālimīn
26:210 ›
وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢١٠
Al-Muntakhab
And such divine discourse as sacred as the Quran just cannot be the work of evil Spirits nor are they permitted to touch it, not to mention being responsible for bringing it down
wamā tanazzalat bihi l-shayāṭīn
26:211 ›
وَمَا یَنۢبَغِی لَهُمۡ وَمَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٢١١
Al-Muntakhab
Nor is it befitting that they be employed by Allah in conveying His sacred message nor can they apply themselves to this purpose
wamā yanbaghī lahum wamā yastaṭīʿūn
26:212 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ ۝٢١٢
Al-Muntakhab
They are altogether excluded from audition. In fact it is quite beyond their limit of audition
innahum ʿani l-samʿi lamaʿzūlūn
26:213 ›
فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٢١٣
Al-Muntakhab
Therefore, do not invoke another god besides Allah lest you should join those who shall suffer the torment to be laid upon the damned
falā tadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fatakūna mina l-muʿadhabīn
26:214 ›
وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِیرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَ ۝٢١٤
Al-Muntakhab
And warn O Muhammad your next and near kin
wa-andhir ʿashīrataka l-aqrabīn
26:215 ›
وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢١٥
Al-Muntakhab
And be well and kindly disposed to those whose hearts reflect the image of religious and spiritual virtues who fell into line with you and take them under your wing
wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka limani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn
26:216 ›
فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢١٦
Al-Muntakhab
But should they disobey you then they will have disobeyed Allah and disregarded His laws. Then say to them O Muhammad: "I am innocent of your ills and of all that you do"
fa-in ʿaṣawka faqul innī barīon mimmā taʿmalūn
26:217 ›
وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢١٧
Al-Muntakhab
And put your trust in the AL-Aziz and AL-Rahim
watawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi l-raḥīm
26:218 ›
ٱلَّذِی یَرَىٰكَ حِینَ تَقُومُ ۝٢١٨
Al-Muntakhab
Who sees you when you stand alone in the act of praying
alladhī yarāka ḥīna taqūm
26:219 ›
وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِی ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢١٩
Al-Muntakhab
And sees your change of position and variation of posture among the assemblage as they prostrate their reason to divine revelation and bow to the ground in reverence, in worship and adoration
wataqallubaka fī l-sājidīn
26:220 ›
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٢٢٠
Al-Muntakhab
He is indeed AL-Sami' (with unlimited audition) and AL-'Ali
innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm
26:221 ›
هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢٢١
Al-Muntakhab
Shall I tell you whom do evil spirits pursue and on whom do devils descend
hal unabbi-ukum ʿalā man tanazzalu l-shayāṭīn
26:222 ›
تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٢٢٢
Al-Muntakhab
They descend -not on the prophets of Allah- but on every sinful liar who intentionally asserts what is false and relates it to Allah and clothes himself with the vesture of wickedness
tanazzalu ʿalā kulli affākin athīmi
26:223 ›
یُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٢٣
Al-Muntakhab
who open their hearts' ears to misrepresentations and vanities and to what the Devils impart to them of falsities and most of them (those who relate and those who receive) are liars. The pagans labelled the Quran as poetry and the Prophet as a poet while the difference is obviously vast. A. The Quran invites to a straight course aiming at a specific Purpose and a useful end. The Prophet's words together with his deeds accord, he does not say something today and cancels it tomorrow nor does he yield to emotions and desires but insists on a divine course of action and does not change nor deviate. On the other hand poets are captives of their emotions, their imagination and of the changing atmospheres and temperaments. When pleased they say one thing and when displeased they say another thing, whereas the Quran adheres eternally to the same thing. B. Poets may be good poets (poets of literary merit), poetic antiquarian (poet with another quality), poeticule (insignificant ), poetaster (a writer of trashy verse) a rhymester. Some of them engage in feigning and devising fables and others aim to please. C. Therefore those whose ruling passion conquers reason who refer their way of life and course of action to the region of poetry or emotions are wasting their days in vanity
yul'qūna l-samʿa wa-aktharuhum kādhibūn
26:224 ›
وَٱلشُّعَرَاۤءُ یَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٢٢٤
Al-Muntakhab
And the poets are followed as the exemplar or the model by those whose ruling passion conquers reason and they refer their course of action and way of life to the region of poetry or emotions and waste their days in vanity
wal-shuʿarāu yattabiʿuhumu l-ghāwūn
26:225 ›
أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ وَادࣲ یَهِیمُونَ ۝٢٢٥
Al-Muntakhab
Do you not see that they rove the trackless realms of every valley of emotion, imagination and discourse
alam tara annahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūn
26:226 ›
وَأَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٢٢٦
Al-Muntakhab
And their words together with their deeds do not accord, they say what they do not do
wa-annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūn
26:227 ›
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَیَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ یَنقَلِبُونَ ۝٢٢٧
Al-Muntakhab
Excepting those of them who acknowledge Allah with hearts impressed with the image of religious and spiritual virtues and with deeds of wisdom and piety. They often apply their remembrance to Allah and they are able to reclaim themselves and triumph over the enemies of Islam who have wronged them, and who shall come to know what kind of destiny awaits them
illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wadhakarū l-laha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wasayaʿlamu alladhīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabin yanqalibūn
