1 The Prophet is consoled

۞ طسۤمۤ ۝١

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِینِ ۝٢

These (alphabets in the starting Verse are) signs of Al-Kitab-ul-Mobin (The Evident, Clear and Manifest Scripture)

til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-mubīn

لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا یَكُونُوا۟ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣

Perhaps you are becoming one who keeps his Nafs (self) in grief and anxiety that the people do not revert as Believers (to the Book of Allah)

laʿallaka bākhiʿun nafsaka allā yakūnū mu'minīn

إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ءَایَةࣰ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَـٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِینَ ۝٤

If We thought proper We could send unto them from the heaven a Sign so their necks instantly bent under its effect as (of) those who are in humility and submission

in nasha nunazzil ʿalayhim mina l-samāi āyatan faẓallat aʿnāquhum lahā khāḍiʿīn

وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٥

And there comes not to them Zikr (Message) from Ar-Rahman anew but they became unto it (as) those who keep themselves at a distance and do not attempt to listen, understand and adopt (Al-Kitab)

wamā yatīhim min dhik'rin mina l-raḥmāni muḥ'dathin illā kānū ʿanhu muʿ'riḍīn

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَیَأۡتِیهِمۡ أَنۢبَـٰۤؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٦

So indeed they have denied. So, very soon shall come the news of what they mock (at)

faqad kadhabū fasayatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝٧

And have they not seen towards the earth how many We caused to grow therein out of all kinds of palatable (growths)

awalam yaraw ilā l-arḍi kam anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٨

Verily, in this is surely Aayatan (a proof, sign or a lesson), yet most of them are not Believers

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٩

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: truly He is the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

2 Moses called and sent to Pharaoh

وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱئۡتِ ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠

And (bring to mind) when your Nourisher-Sustainer called Musa (saying): “Proceed to the nation of transgressors —

wa-idh nādā rabbuka mūsā ani i'ti l-qawma l-ẓālimīn

قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ أَلَا یَتَّقُونَ ۝١١

the nation of Firaun. Will they not pay obedience (to Allah)?”

qawma fir'ʿawna alā yattaqūn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ أَن یُكَذِّبُونِ ۝١٢

(Musa) said: “My Nourisher-Sustainer! Verily, I fear that they will belie me

qāla rabbi innī akhāfu an yukadhibūn

وَیَضِیقُ صَدۡرِی وَلَا یَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِی فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ ۝١٣

and my chest constricts and my tongue does not speak fluently. So send (Your Inspirations) to Harun (to accompany me as a Messenger)

wayaḍīqu ṣadrī walā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa-arsil ilā hārūn

وَلَهُمۡ عَلَیَّ ذَنۢبࣱ فَأَخَافُ أَن یَقۡتُلُونِ ۝١٤

And they have a charge of crime against me, whereof I fear that they will kill me.”

walahum ʿalayya dhanbun fa-akhāfu an yaqtulūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۖ فَٱذۡهَبَا بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝١٥

(Allah) said: “Certainly never! Go you both with Ayaatina (Our Signs). Verily, We shall be with you (as) Listeners

qāla kallā fa-idh'habā biāyātinā innā maʿakum mus'tamiʿūn

فَأۡتِیَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَاۤ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦

Then proceed both of you to Firaun, then both of you say: ‘Surely, we are 'Messenger from the Nourisher-Sustainer of the worlds'

fatiyā fir'ʿawna faqūlā innā rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٧

that you send Bani Israiel with us (as a free people desiring to emigrate).

an arsil maʿanā banī is'rāīl

قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِینَا وَلِیدࣰا وَلَبِثۡتَ فِینَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِینَ ۝١٨

(Firaun) said: “Did we not bring you up among us as a child? And you did stay many years of your life with us

qāla alam nurabbika fīnā walīdan walabith'ta fīnā min ʿumurika sinīn

وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِی فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٩

And you did your deed, which you did. And you are of the ungrateful.”

wafaʿalta faʿlataka allatī faʿalta wa-anta mina l-kāfirīn

قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَاۤ إِذࣰا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٢٠

(Musa) said: “I did it while: and I (was) of the ignorants (— not fully conversant with the Divine Message)

qāla faʿaltuhā idhan wa-anā mina l-ḍālīn

فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِی رَبِّی حُكۡمࣰا وَجَعَلَنِی مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٢١

So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Nourisher-Sustainer bestowed me Hukman (‘Verdict, Order or Ordainment’. This is an attribute for Allah’s Book) and appointed me (as one) of the Messengers

fafarartu minkum lammā khif'tukum fawahaba lī rabbī ḥuk'man wajaʿalanī mina l-mur'salīn

وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةࣱ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَیَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٢٢

And this is the favour for which you taunt me — that you have kept Bani Israiel in bondage?”

watil'ka niʿ'matun tamunnuhā ʿalayya an ʿabbadtta banī is'rāīl

قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٣

Firaun said: “And what (is meant by the term) Rabb-ul-Alamin?”

qāla fir'ʿawnu wamā rabbu l-ʿālamīn

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِینَ ۝٢٤

(Musa) said: “Nourisher-Sustainer to the heavens and the earth and whatever is between those two — if you be those who become convinced.”

qāla rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīn

قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٢٥

(Firaun) said to those around him: “Do you not hear?”

qāla liman ḥawlahu alā tastamiʿūn

قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَاۤىِٕكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٢٦

(Musa further) said: “Nourisher-Sustainer to you people, and Nourisher-Sustainer to your initial fathers (who initiated your dynasty)!”

qāla rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīn

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٢٧

(Firaun) said: “Surely your Messenger who has been sent to you indeed (appears to be) a fanatic .

qāla inna rasūlakumu alladhī ur'sila ilaykum lamajnūnu

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨

(Musa continued and) said: “Nourisher-Sustainer for the east and the west and whatever is between those two if you had been using intellect.”

qāla rabbu l-mashriqi wal-maghribi wamā baynahumā in kuntum taʿqilūn

قَالَ لَىِٕنِ ٱتَّخَذۡتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَیۡرِی لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَسۡجُونِینَ ۝٢٩

(Firaun) said: “Surely, if you chose an ilah (god) other than me, I will certainly make you out of those who are put to prison.”

qāla la-ini ittakhadhta ilāhan ghayrī la-ajʿalannaka mina l-masjūnīn

قَالَ أَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَیۡءࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٣٠

(Musa) said: “What? Even if I approached you with something manifest?”

qāla awalaw ji'tuka bishayin mubīni

قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦۤ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣١

(Firaun) said: “Then come along with it if you are of the truthful.”

qāla fati bihi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٣٢

So (Musa) kept his rod on the ground, so, instantly it (is) a serpent, manifest

fa-alqā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thuʿ'bānun mubīnu

وَنَزَعَ یَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِیَ بَیۡضَاۤءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِینَ ۝٣٣

And he drew out his hand, so, instantly it (is) completely white for the beholders

wanazaʿa yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍāu lilnnāẓirīn

3 Moses and Enchanters

قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥۤ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٣٤

(Firaun) said to the chiefs around him: “Verily, this (is) indeed a well-versed magician

qāla lil'mala-i ḥawlahu inna hādhā lasāḥirun ʿalīmu

یُرِیدُ أَن یُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ ۝٣٥

He intends that he may expel you from your land through his sorcery, then what it is that you advise (for orders)?”

yurīdu an yukh'rijakum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihi famādhā tamurūn

قَالُوۤا۟ أَرۡجِهۡ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٣٦

They said: “Put him off and his brother (for a while), and send callers for the cities

qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-ib'ʿath fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

یَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٣٧

They shall return to you with all the expert sorcerers.”

yatūka bikulli saḥḥārin ʿalīmi

فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٣٨

So the magicians were made to assemble at a fixed time on the well-known day

fajumiʿa l-saḥaratu limīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi

وَقِیلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ ۝٣٩

And it was said to the people: “Are you (too) going to assemble

waqīla lilnnāsi hal antum muj'tamiʿūn

لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤٠

Perchance we may follow the sorcerers if they became: they (very ones) as winners?”

laʿallanā nattabiʿu l-saḥarata in kānū humu l-ghālibīn

فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَىِٕنَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبِینَ ۝٤١

So when the magicians arrived, they said to Firaun: “Will surely there be for us a certain reward if we became — we (as) the winners?”

falammā jāa l-saḥaratu qālū lifir'ʿawna a-inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnu l-ghālibīn

قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٤٢

He said: “Yes (of course), and verily you shall then, surely be of those who have been delegated nearness (to my person).”

qāla naʿam wa-innakum idhan lamina l-muqarabīn

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰۤ أَلۡقُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ ۝٤٣

Musa said to them: “Throw (on the ground) what you intend to throw.”

qāla lahum mūsā alqū mā antum mul'qūn

فَأَلۡقَوۡا۟ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِیَّهُمۡ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡغَـٰلِبُونَ ۝٤٤

So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said “By the might of Firaun, certainly we — surely, we (will be) the winners.

fa-alqaw ḥibālahum waʿiṣiyyahum waqālū biʿizzati fir'ʿawna innā lanaḥnu l-ghālibūn

فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَأۡفِكُونَ ۝٤٥

Then Musa dropped his rod, so instantly it swallows all the falsehood which they indulge in

fa-alqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā yafikūn

فَأُلۡقِیَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِینَ ۝٤٦

So the sorcerers were made to drop (themselves on the ground as) those who are prostrating (in humility to Allah)

fa-ul'qiya l-saḥaratu sājidīn

قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٤٧

They said: “We have developed Faith in the Nourisher-Sustainer of the worlds —

qālū āmannā birabbi l-ʿālamīn

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ۝٤٨

Nourisher-Sustainer of Musa and Harun!”

rabbi mūsā wahārūn

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِیرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَیۡدِیَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَـٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٤٩

(Firaun) said: “You have Believed for his sake prior to that I give you permission. Surely, he indeed is your senior-most who has taught you magic. So surely, soon you will come to know. Without doubt, I will chop off your hands and your legs on opposite sides, and surely I will crucify you all.”

qāla āmantum lahu qabla an ādhana lakum innahu lakabīrukumu alladhī ʿallamakumu l-siḥ'ra falasawfa taʿlamūna la-uqaṭṭiʿanna aydiyakum wa-arjulakum min khilāfin wala-uṣallibannakum ajmaʿīn

قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَیۡرَۖ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ ۝٥٠

(The magicians who were now sincere and devoted Muslims) said: “No harm (it does to us). Surely we are those who return to our Nourisher-Sustainer

qālū lā ḍayra innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰیَـٰنَاۤ أَن كُنَّاۤ أَوَّلَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥١

Surely, we desire exceedingly that Our Nourisher-Sustainer may forgive for us our sins as we become the first Believers (out of the nation of Firaun).”

innā naṭmaʿu an yaghfira lanā rabbunā khaṭāyānā an kunnā awwala l-mu'minīn

4 Moses delivered, Pharaoh drowned

۞ وَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۤ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ۝٥٢

And We sent inspiration to Musa that: “Move away (emigrate) with My Ibad, surely you are those who are being chased.”

wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an asri biʿibādī innakum muttabaʿūn

فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی ٱلۡمَدَاۤىِٕنِ حَـٰشِرِینَ ۝٥٣

So Firaun sent callers in all the cities

fa-arsala fir'ʿawnu fī l-madāini ḥāshirīn

إِنَّ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِیلُونَ ۝٥٤

(Saying): “Verily, these indeed are a minority — a very small band of people

inna hāulāi lashir'dhimatun qalīlūn

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَاۤىِٕظُونَ ۝٥٥

And verily, they have acted with us, surely as those who enrage (us)

wa-innahum lanā laghāiẓūn

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِیعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ ۝٥٦

And verily, we indeed are a multitude (i.e., a great nation) fully vigilant.”

wa-innā lajamīʿun ḥādhirūn

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝٥٧

So, We expelled them from orchards and streams

fa-akhrajnāhum min jannātin waʿuyūni

وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِیمࣲ ۝٥٨

and treasures and position of honour

wakunūzin wamaqāmin karīmi

كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَـٰهَا بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝٥٩

Thus (it all happened) and We gave it (all) in inheritance to Bani Israiel

kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā banī is'rāīl

فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِینَ ۝٦٠

So they pursued them as those who were witnessing the sunrise

fa-atbaʿūhum mush'riqīn

فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٰۤءَا ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ ۝٦١

So when the two groups see (each other) the companions of Musa said: “Surely, we are indeed those who have been traced (by the persecuting enemy) .

falammā tarāā l-jamʿāni qāla aṣḥābu mūsā innā lamud'rakūn

قَالَ كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّی سَیَهۡدِینِ ۝٦٢

(Musa) said: “Certainly never! Certainly, with me is my Nourisher-Sustainer, soon He guides me.”

qāla kallā inna maʿiya rabbī sayahdīn

فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰۤ أَنِ ٱضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَٱلطَّوۡدِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٦٣

So We sent inspiration to Musa (saying) that: "Strike with your rod (on) the sea.” Instantly it parted and each separate part (of the sea-water) became like a firm mass, extremely huge

fa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā ani iḍ'rib biʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-infalaqa fakāna kullu fir'qin kal-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīm

وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٤

And We made the others come at that very site

wa-azlafnā thamma l-ākharīn

وَأَنجَیۡنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٦٥

And We saved Musa and whoever was with him — all together

wa-anjaynā mūsā waman maʿahu ajmaʿīn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝٦٦

Then (then and there) We drowned the others

thumma aghraqnā l-ākharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٦٧

Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not Believers

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

5 History of Abraham

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٦٨

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: truly He is the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

وَٱتۡلُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ۝٦٩

And rehearse unto them the information about Ibrahim

wa-ut'lu ʿalayhim naba-a ib'rāhīm

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِیهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٠

When he said to his father and his nation: “What is it that you worship?”

idh qāla li-abīhi waqawmihi mā taʿbudūn

قَالُوا۟ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِینَ ۝٧١

They said: “We worship idols and we remain confined in retreat (to them).

qālū naʿbudu aṣnāman fanaẓallu lahā ʿākifīn

قَالَ هَلۡ یَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذۡ تَدۡعُونَ ۝٧٢

(Ibrahim) said: “Do they hear you when you call (or invoke them)

qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum idh tadʿūn

أَوۡ یَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَضُرُّونَ ۝٧٣

Or they give you benefit or they give (you) harm?”

aw yanfaʿūnakum aw yaḍurrūn

قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ ءَابَاۤءَنَا كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٧٤

They said: “Nay, we found our fathers- like this they do.”

qālū bal wajadnā ābāanā kadhālika yafʿalūn

قَالَ أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٧٥

He said: “Have you then (ever) observed that which you have been worshipping —

qāla afara-aytum mā kuntum taʿbudūn

أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُمُ ٱلۡأَقۡدَمُونَ ۝٧٦

you and your ancient fathers

antum waābāukumu l-aqdamūn

فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّیۤ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٧٧

So, surely, they are enemies to me, except the Nourisher-Sustainer to the worlds

fa-innahum ʿaduwwun lī illā rabba l-ʿālamīn

ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَنِی فَهُوَ یَهۡدِینِ ۝٧٨

That Who has created me, then He (also) guides me

alladhī khalaqanī fahuwa yahdīn

وَٱلَّذِی هُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِی وَیَسۡقِینِ ۝٧٩

And That Who: He feeds me and gives me to drink (palatable water and other liquids)

wa-alladhī huwa yuṭ'ʿimunī wayasqīn

وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهُوَ یَشۡفِینِ ۝٨٠

And when I fell sick, then He cures me

wa-idhā mariḍ'tu fahuwa yashfīn

وَٱلَّذِی یُمِیتُنِی ثُمَّ یُحۡیِینِ ۝٨١

And That Who will cause me to die, (and) afterwards shall revive me

wa-alladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥ'yīn

وَٱلَّذِیۤ أَطۡمَعُ أَن یَغۡفِرَ لِی خَطِیۤءَتِی یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٨٢

And That, Who: I exceedingly desire that He forgives me my faults on the Day of Accountability.”

wa-alladhī aṭmaʿu an yaghfira lī khaṭīatī yawma l-dīn

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِی حُكۡمࣰا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِی بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٨٣

"My Nourisher-Sustainer! Bestow on me decisive power and join me with the righteous

rabbi hab lī ḥuk'man wa-alḥiq'nī bil-ṣāliḥīn

وَٱجۡعَل لِّی لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٨٤

And grant me a truthful tongue (an honest reporting) among later generations

wa-ij'ʿal lī lisāna ṣid'qin fī l-ākhirīn

وَٱجۡعَلۡنِی مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨٥

And make me among the inheritors of the Garden of Delight

wa-ij'ʿalnī min warathati jannati l-naʿīm

وَٱغۡفِرۡ لِأَبِیۤ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٨٦

And grant forgiveness for my father, surely he is of the erring ones

wa-igh'fir li-abī innahu kāna mina l-ḍālīn

وَلَا تُخۡزِنِی یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝٨٧

And disgrace me not when (all) are resurrected —

walā tukh'zinī yawma yub'ʿathūn

یَوۡمَ لَا یَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ ۝٨٨

the Day when does not benefit the wealth, and nor sons

yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun walā banūn

إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

except that who came to Allah with a heart in complete submission.

illā man atā l-laha biqalbin salīmi

وَأُزۡلِفَتِ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝٩٠

And the Paradise has been brought closest to the righteous

wa-uz'lifati l-janatu lil'muttaqīn

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِیمُ لِلۡغَاوِینَ ۝٩١

And the Hell-Fire is brought to full view of the erring people

waburrizati l-jaḥīmu lil'ghāwīn

وَقِیلَ لَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٩٢

And it is said to them: “Where (have gone) those whom you used to worship —

waqīla lahum ayna mā kuntum taʿbudūn

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلۡ یَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ یَنتَصِرُونَ ۝٩٣

besides Allah? Do they provide you help or provide assistance to themselves in retaliation (to Allah’s decision)?”

min dūni l-lahi hal yanṣurūnakum aw yantaṣirūn

فَكُبۡكِبُوا۟ فِیهَا هُمۡ وَٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٩٤

Then they were thrown on their faces into this (Fire) — they (who encouraged their own worship) and (all) the erring ones

fakub'kibū fīhā hum wal-ghāwūn

وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِیسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ ۝٩٥

and the groups of Iblis — altogether

wajunūdu ib'līsa ajmaʿūn

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمۡ فِیهَا یَخۡتَصِمُونَ ۝٩٦

They said while they therein indulge in arguments

qālū wahum fīhā yakhtaṣimūn

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٧

" By Allah! When we had been surely in manifest error

tal-lahi in kunnā lafī ḍalālin mubīni

إِذۡ نُسَوِّیكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٩٨

when we hold you as equal with the Nourisher-Sustainer of the worlds

idh nusawwīkum birabbi l-ʿālamīn

وَمَاۤ أَضَلَّنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝٩٩

and did not deviate us except Al-Mujrimun

wamā aḍallanā illā l-muj'rimūn

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِینَ ۝١٠٠

So there are not for us out of the intercessors

famā lanā min shāfiʿīn

وَلَا صَدِیقٍ حَمِیمࣲ ۝١٠١

nor a devoted friend

walā ṣadīqin ḥamīmi

فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٢

Then if there could be for us one chance of return to the worldly life, then we will (definitely) become out of those who Believe.”

falaw anna lanā karratan fanakūna mina l-mu'minīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٠٣

Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not Believers

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٠٤

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: truly, He is the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٠٥

The nation of Nuh belied the Messengers

kadhabat qawmu nūḥin l-mur'salīn

6 History of Noah

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٠٦

when their brother Nuh said to them: “Will you not pay obedience (to Allah)

idh qāla lahum akhūhum nūḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٠٧

Certainly, I am to you a trustworthy Messenger

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٠٨

So pay obedience to Allah and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠٩

And I do not ask you for this any reward. My reward is not due except with the Nourisher-Sustainer to the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١١٠

So pay obedience to Allah and obey me .

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

۞ قَالُوۤا۟ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلۡأَرۡذَلُونَ ۝١١١

They said: “Shall we Believe for your sake while (only) those who belong to the lower-strata of society have followed you?”

qālū anu'minu laka wa-ittabaʿaka l-ardhalūn

قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِی بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١١٢

He said: “And what is my knowledge about what they used to do

qāla wamā ʿil'mī bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّیۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ ۝١١٣

Their accountability is not (the responsibility) except of my Nourisher-Sustainer if you do understand

in ḥisābuhum illā ʿalā rabbī law tashʿurūn

وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٤

And I am not that who drives away the Believers

wamā anā biṭāridi l-mu'minīn

إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٥

I am not but a plain warner .

in anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَرۡجُومِینَ ۝١١٦

They said: “Truly, if you do not stop (your way of propagating and preaching), O Nuh! You will surely be of those who have been rejected and expelled.”

qālū la-in lam tantahi yānūḥu latakūnanna mina l-marjūmīn

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی كَذَّبُونِ ۝١١٧

He said: “My Nourisher-Sustainer! Verily, my nation has belied me

qāla rabbi inna qawmī kadhabūn

فَٱفۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰا وَنَجِّنِی وَمَن مَّعِیَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١١٨

Therefore pronounce You, between me and between them judgement and rescue me and whosoever is with me out of the Believers.”

fa-if'taḥ baynī wabaynahum fatḥan wanajjinī waman maʿiya mina l-mu'minīn

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ ۝١١٩

So We saved him and those with him in the fully loaded Ark

fa-anjaynāhu waman maʿahu fī l-ful'ki l-mashḥūn

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ ٱلۡبَاقِینَ ۝١٢٠

Then We drowned thereafter, the rest

thumma aghraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٢١

Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not Believers

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

7 History of Hud

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٢٢

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: truly, He is the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٌ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٢٣

’Ad (people) belied the Messengers

kadhabat ʿādun l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٢٤

when their brother Hud said to them: “Will you not pay obedience (to Allah)

idh qāla lahum akhūhum hūdun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٢٥

Verily, I am to you a trustworthy Messenger

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٢٦

So pay obedience to Allah and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٢٧

And I do not ask you for this any reward. My reward is not due except with the Nourisher-Sustainer to the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِیعٍ ءَایَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ ۝١٢٨

Do you build on every prominent place a monument? You act uselessly (seehead of state vain glory)

atabnūna bikulli rīʿin āyatan taʿbathūn

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ ۝١٢٩

And you establish industrial units as if you will stay (in the world) permanently

watattakhidhūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum takhludūn

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ۝١٣٠

And when you persecuted you persecuted as tyrants

wa-idhā baṭashtum baṭashtum jabbārīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٣١

So pay obedience to Allah and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٣٢

And pay obedience to Him Who has helped you through that which you (very well) know

wa-ittaqū alladhī amaddakum bimā taʿlamūn

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَـٰمࣲ وَبَنِینَ ۝١٣٣

He has helped you with cattle and children

amaddakum bi-anʿāmin wabanīn

وَجَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٣٤

and gardens and springs

wajannātin waʿuyūni

إِنِّیۤ أَخَافُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٣٥

Verily, I fear against you a torment of a Great Day .

innī akhāfu ʿalaykum ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

قَالُوا۟ سَوَاۤءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلۡوَ ٰعِظِینَ ۝١٣٦

They said: “It is same to us whether you gave (us) a sermon or be not of those who give sermons

qālū sawāon ʿalaynā awaʿaẓta am lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīn

إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣٧

This (counselling which you have uttered before us is) nothing but the practices of the initial people

in hādhā illā khuluqu l-awalīn

وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝١٣٨

And we will not become those who have been punished .

wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhabīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٣٩

So they belied him, then We destroyed them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not Believers

fakadhabūhu fa-ahlaknāhum inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٤٠

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: truly He is the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

8 History of Salih

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٤١

Samud (people) belied the Messengers

kadhabat thamūdu l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٤٢

when their brother Salih said to them: “Will you not pay obedience (to Allah)

idh qāla lahum akhūhum ṣāliḥun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٤٣

Verily, I am to you a trustworthy Messenger

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٤٤

So pay obedience to Allah and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٤٥

And I do not ask you for this, any reward. My reward is not due except with the Nourisher-Sustainer to the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِی مَا هَـٰهُنَاۤ ءَامِنِینَ ۝١٤٦

Will you be left in whatever (is available) over here as a people who have obtained complete security —

atut'rakūna fī mā hāhunā āminīn

فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونࣲ ۝١٤٧

in gardens and springs

fī jannātin waʿuyūni

وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِیمࣱ ۝١٤٨

and corn-fields and date-palm — its spathe (or spadix) a soft one, ready to split open

wazurūʿin wanakhlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmu

وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِبَالِ بُیُوتࣰا فَـٰرِهِینَ ۝١٤٩

And you carve inside the mountains — houses, as highly skilled people

watanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan fārihīn

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٥٠

So pay obedience to Allah and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَلَا تُطِیعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝١٥١

And obey not the order of Al-Musrifun —

walā tuṭīʿū amra l-mus'rifīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا یُصۡلِحُونَ ۝١٥٢

those who make mischief on the land and reform not .

alladhīna yuf'sidūna fī l-arḍi walā yuṣ'liḥūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٥٣

They said: “Surely what (is a fact is that) you are of those who are under effect of magic

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

مَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِءَایَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٥٤

You are not but (just) a human being like us. Then come (to us) with a credential (or miracle) if you happen to be out of those who speak the truth .

mā anta illā basharun mith'lunā fati biāyatin in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝١٥٥

(Salih) said: “This is a she-camel. For her (must be a right) to drink (water) and for you (likewise is a right) to drink (water) on the day (specified and made) wellknown

qāla hādhihi nāqatun lahā shir'bun walakum shir'bu yawmin maʿlūmi

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوۤءࣲ فَیَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمࣲ ۝١٥٦

And touch her not with (any) harm, otherwise torment of a Great Day shall seize you .

walā tamassūhā bisūin fayakhudhakum ʿadhābu yawmin ʿaẓīmi

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِینَ ۝١٥٧

But they hamstrung her (compelling her to limp), then they became regretful —

faʿaqarūhā fa-aṣbaḥū nādimīn

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٥٨

so the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not Believers

fa-akhadhahumu l-ʿadhābu inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٥٩

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: truly He is the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

9 History of Lot

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٦٠

The nation of Lout belied the Messengers —

kadhabat qawmu lūṭin l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٦١

when their brother Lout said to them: “Will you not pay obedience (to Allah)

idh qāla lahum akhūhum lūṭun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٦٢

Verily, I am unto you a trustworthy Messenger

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٦٣

So pay obedience (to Allah) and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٤

And I do not ask you for this any reward. My reward is not due except with the Nourisher-Sustainer to the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلذُّكۡرَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٦٥

Do you approach males (to satisfy your appetite) out of (the people in) the worlds

atatūna l-dhuk'rāna mina l-ʿālamīn

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ ۝١٦٦

and you avoid what your Nourisher-Sustainer has created for you, out of your (female) consorts? Nay, you are a nation who trespass and transgress

watadharūna mā khalaqa lakum rabbukum min azwājikum bal antum qawmun ʿādūn

قَالُوا۟ لَىِٕن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ یَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡرَجِینَ ۝١٦٧

They said: “If you do not desist (from your sermons and counsellings) O Lout, surely you become of those who have been expelled (and banished from the land) .

qālū la-in lam tantahi yālūṭu latakūnanna mina l-mukh'rajīn

قَالَ إِنِّی لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡقَالِینَ ۝١٦٨

(Lout) said: “Without a speck of doubt I am of those who have a feeling of hate and detestation against your act (of homosexuality)

qāla innī liʿamalikum mina l-qālīn

رَبِّ نَجِّنِی وَأَهۡلِی مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٦٩

My Nourisher-Sustainer! Save me and my family members and followers from what the people do .

rabbi najjinī wa-ahlī mimmā yaʿmalūn

فَنَجَّیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٧٠

So We saved him and his family, all (of them) —

fanajjaynāhu wa-ahlahu ajmaʿīn

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰا فِی ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝١٧١

except an old woman, (We left her) in those who were to be covered under the dust and debris (of the torment)

illā ʿajūzan fī l-ghābirīn

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡءَاخَرِینَ ۝١٧٢

Afterwards We completely destroyed the others

thumma dammarnā l-ākharīn

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِم مَّطَرࣰاۖ فَسَاۤءَ مَطَرُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِینَ ۝١٧٣

And We rained on them a rain (of torment). Then evil became the rain to those who were warned (in advance)

wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fasāa maṭaru l-mundharīn

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٧٤

Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not Believers

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٧٥

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: truly He is the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

10 History of Shu'aib

كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ لۡءَیۡكَةِ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝١٧٦

The dwellers of Al-’Aiyka belied the Messengers

kadhaba aṣḥābu al'aykati l-mur'salīn

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ۝١٧٧

when Shuaib said to them: “Will you not pay obedience (to Allah)

idh qāla lahum shuʿaybun alā tattaqūn

إِنِّی لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِینࣱ ۝١٧٨

Surely, I am, unto you, a trustworthy Messenger

innī lakum rasūlun amīnu

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِیعُونِ ۝١٧٩

So pay obedience to Allah and obey me

fa-ittaqū l-laha wa-aṭīʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِیَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٨٠

And I do not ask you for this, any reward. My reward is not due except with the Nourisher-Sustainer to the worlds

wamā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīn

۞ أَوۡفُوا۟ ٱلۡكَیۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُخۡسِرِینَ ۝١٨١

Complete the measure or weight and be not of those who give less

awfū l-kayla walā takūnū mina l-mukh'sirīn

وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلۡقِسۡطَاسِ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمِ ۝١٨٢

And weigh with a balance which (deceives not and) maintains its balance

wazinū bil-qis'ṭāsi l-mus'taqīm

وَلَا تَبۡخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡیَاۤءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝١٨٣

And defraud not people in their items (regarding number, quality, measure or weight etc.) and behave not in the land as disruptionists or as corrupt people

walā tabkhasū l-nāsa ashyāahum walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٨٤

And obey That Who created you and the generations of the earlier people

wa-ittaqū alladhī khalaqakum wal-jibilata l-awalīn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِینَ ۝١٨٥

They said: “ Certainly what (is a fact is that) you are of those who are under effect of sorcery

qālū innamā anta mina l-musaḥarīn

وَمَاۤ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝١٨٦

And you are not but a human being like us, and surely, we regard you definitely of those who are liars

wamā anta illā basharun mith'lunā wa-in naẓunnuka lamina l-kādhibīn

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا كِسَفࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝١٨٧

So cause a piece (of some rock) to descend on us from the direction of the sky (to destroy us) if you are of the truthful.”

fa-asqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina l-samāi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ رَبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٨٨

(Shuaib) said: “My Nourisher-Sustainer knows better what you people do (and what you deserve in punishment).”

qāla rabbī aʿlamu bimā taʿmalūn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیمٍ ۝١٨٩

So they belied him, then the torment seized them in the day of over-shadowing gloom. Indeed, it was a punishment of a dreadful day

fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhahum ʿadhābu yawmi l-ẓulati innahu kāna ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmi

إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٠

Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not Believers

inna fī dhālika laāyatan wamā kāna aktharuhum mu'minīn

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝١٩١

And verily, your Nourisher-Sustainer: truly He is the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

11 Prophet's Opponents warned

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِیلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٩٢

And truly, this (Al-Kitab) is surely a Descent from the Nourisher-Sustainer of the worlds

wa-innahu latanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīn

نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِینُ ۝١٩٣

Descended with it Ar-Ruh-ul-Amin (The Trustworthy Spirit)

nazala bihi l-rūḥu l-amīn

عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِینَ ۝١٩٤

to your heart so that you become of the warners

bilisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīni

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیࣲّ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١٩٥

in the clearly evident Arabic tongue

Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeenin

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِی زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٩٦

And surely, this (Al-Kitab) is indeed in the Zubur [this is plural of Zabur and it means sheets (of written material)] of the earlier people

wa-innahu lafī zuburi l-awalīn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَایَةً أَن یَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰۤؤُا۟ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ ۝١٩٧

And is it not a sign to them that the learned people of Bani Israiel are conversant with it

awalam yakun lahum āyatan an yaʿlamahu ʿulamāu banī is'rāīl

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِینَ ۝١٩٨

And if We had made it to descend unto some of those whose mother tongue is not Arabic

walaw nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-aʿjamīn

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝١٩٩

then he had read it unto them, they would not have become Believers thereto

faqara-ahu ʿalayhim mā kānū bihi mu'minīn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَـٰهُ فِی قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ ۝٢٠٠

Thus have We caused it (disbelief in Al-Kitab) to enter into the hearts of the sinful

kadhālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīn

لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ یَرَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٢٠١

they will not Believe in it until they see the painful torment

lā yu'minūna bihi ḥattā yarawū l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

فَیَأۡتِیَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٢٠٢

So it shall approach them all of a sudden while they will not perceive (it)

fayatiyahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

فَیَقُولُوا۟ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ۝٢٠٣

So they will say: “Will we become those who are granted some respite?”

fayaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūn

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝٢٠٤

Do they then wish to be hastened on regarding punishment to proceed from Us

afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُمۡ سِنِینَ ۝٢٠٥

Have you marked? If We provided them provisions for years

afara-ayta in mattaʿnāhum sinīn

ثُمَّ جَاۤءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٠٦

after that, reached them what they had been promised

thumma jāahum mā kānū yūʿadūn

مَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ یُمَتَّعُونَ ۝٢٠٧

whatever they were being provided as provisions did not benefit them (at all)

mā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūn

وَمَاۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡیَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ ۝٢٠٨

And We did not destroy a township but for it (were sent) warners —

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā lahā mundhirūn

ذِكۡرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٠٩

by way of reminder, and We are not unjust

dhik'rā wamā kunnā ẓālimīn

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢١٠

And did not descend with it (i.e., for bringing down Al-Kitab) the devils

wamā tanazzalat bihi l-shayāṭīn

وَمَا یَنۢبَغِی لَهُمۡ وَمَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ ۝٢١١

And it does not (even) suit them, and they have no capacity (to do this job)

wamā yanbaghī lahum wamā yastaṭīʿūn

إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ ۝٢١٢

Verily, they are indeed those who stand deprived from even listening (to it)

innahum ʿani l-samʿi lamaʿzūlūn

فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُعَذَّبِینَ ۝٢١٣

So invoke not alongwith Allah another ilah (god) lest you be among those who have been subjected to punishment

falā tadʿu maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fatakūna mina l-muʿadhabīn

وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِیرَتَكَ ٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَ ۝٢١٤

And warn your tribe, nearest kinsmen

wa-andhir ʿashīrataka l-aqrabīn

وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٢١٥

And lower your wing (in mercy and forgiveness) for that who has followed you out of the Believers

wa-ikh'fiḍ janāḥaka limani ittabaʿaka mina l-mu'minīn

فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّی بَرِیۤءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢١٦

Then if they disobeyed you, then say: “Surely, I am absolved of what you practice.”

fa-in ʿaṣawka faqul innī barīon mimmā taʿmalūn

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ ۝٢١٧

And put your trust in the All-Mighty, the continuously Merciful

watawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi l-raḥīm

ٱلَّذِی یَرَىٰكَ حِینَ تَقُومُ ۝٢١٨

Who marks you when you stand up (to lead the Prayers)

alladhī yarāka ḥīna taqūm

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِی ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝٢١٩

and your changing postures among the Submitters

wataqallubaka fī l-sājidīn

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٢٢٠

Verily! He, only He, is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower

innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ ۝٢٢١

Shall I inform you upon whom descend the devils

hal unabbi-ukum ʿalā man tanazzalu l-shayāṭīn

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٢٢٢

They descend on all those who are frequent liars, (and) continuous sinners

tanazzalu ʿalā kulli affākin athīmi

یُلۡقُونَ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٢٢٣

They transmit (without getting confirmed) what is heard and most of them are untrue in speech

yul'qūna l-samʿa wa-aktharuhum kādhibūn

وَٱلشُّعَرَاۤءُ یَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡغَاوُۥنَ ۝٢٢٤

As for the poets, (only) the erring ones follow them

wal-shuʿarāu yattabiʿuhumu l-ghāwūn

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِی كُلِّ وَادࣲ یَهِیمُونَ ۝٢٢٥

have you not seen that they roam about in all the (imaginary) valleys (of thought)

alam tara annahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūn

وَأَنَّهُمۡ یَقُولُونَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُونَ ۝٢٢٦

And that they utter what they do not practice

wa-annahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūn

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِیرࣰا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ۗ وَسَیَعۡلَمُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَیَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ یَنقَلِبُونَ ۝٢٢٧

except those who have accepted Faith, and have performed righteous deeds and have glorified and propagated Allah exceedingly, and have done an effective rebut after they were made to face injustice. And soon will know those who have indulged in injustice as to what place of return they shall return. [The poets, writers, thinkers and historians indulge in injustice and need an effective rebuttal when they direct their onslaughts against Allah, Islam, Messengers, Islamic state and the ordainments and directives available in Al-Kitab]

illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti wadhakarū l-laha kathīran wa-intaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wasayaʿlamu alladhīna ẓalamū ayya munqalabin yanqalibūn
