1 Three Classes of Men
56:1 ›
۞ إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ۝١
Maududi
When the Event will come to pas
idhā waqaʿati l-wāqiʿat
56:2 ›
لَیۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ۝٢
Maududi
– and then there will be no one to deny its occurrence
laysa liwaqʿatihā kādhibatu
56:3 ›
خَافِضَةࣱ رَّافِعَةٌ ۝٣
Maududi
(a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down
khāfiḍatun rāfiʿatu
56:4 ›
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجࣰّا ۝٤
Maududi
when the earth will suddenly shake with a terrible shaking
idhā rujjati l-arḍu rajja
56:5 ›
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسࣰّا ۝٥
Maududi
and the mountains will crumbl
wabussati l-jibālu bassa
56:6 ›
فَكَانَتۡ هَبَاۤءࣰ مُّنۢبَثࣰّا ۝٦
Maududi
and will scatter abroad into fine dust
fakānat habāan munbatha
56:7 ›
وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا ثَلَـٰثَةࣰ ۝٧
Maududi
You shall then become three groups
wakuntum azwājan thalāthata
56:8 ›
فَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ ۝٨
Maududi
The People on the Right: and how fortunate will be the People on the Right
fa-aṣḥābu l-maymanati mā aṣḥābu l-maymanat
56:9 ›
وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡءَمَةِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡءَمَةِ ۝٩
Maududi
And the People on the Left: and how miserable will be the People on the Left
wa-aṣḥābu l-mashamati mā aṣḥābu l-mashamat
56:10 ›
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ۝١٠
Maududi
As for the Foremost, they will be the foremost
wal-sābiqūna l-sābiqūn
56:11 ›
أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ۝١١
Maududi
They shall be near-stationed (to their Lord)
ulāika l-muqarabūn
56:12 ›
فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝١٢
Maududi
in the Gardens of Bliss
fī jannāti l-naʿīm
56:13 ›
ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣
Maududi
A throng of the ancients
thullatun mina l-awalīn
56:14 ›
وَقَلِیلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٤
Maududi
and a few from later times
waqalīlun mina l-ākhirīn
56:15 ›
عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مَّوۡضُونَةࣲ ۝١٥
Maududi
They (will be seated) on gold-encrusted couches
muttakiīna ʿalayhā mutaqābilīn
56:16 ›
مُّتَّكِءِینَ عَلَیۡهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝١٦
Maududi
reclining on them, arrayed face to face
Muttaki-eena AAalayha mutaqabileena
56:17 ›
یَطُوفُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَ ٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ۝١٧
Maududi
immortal youths shall go about the
yaṭūfu ʿalayhim wil'dānun mukhalladūn
56:18 ›
بِأَكۡوَابࣲ وَأَبَارِیقَ وَكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینࣲ ۝١٨
Maududi
with goblets and ewers and a cup filled with a drink drawn from a running spring
bi-akwābin wa-abārīqa wakasin min maʿīni
56:19 ›
لَّا یُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا یُنزِفُونَ ۝١٩
Maududi
a drink by which their minds will not be clouded nor will it cause drunkenness
lā yuṣaddaʿūna ʿanhā walā yunzifūn
56:20 ›
وَفَـٰكِهَةࣲ مِّمَّا یَتَخَیَّرُونَ ۝٢٠
Maududi
they will also go about them with the fruits of which they may choose
wafākihatin mimmā yatakhayyarūn
56:21 ›
وَلَحۡمِ طَیۡرࣲ مِّمَّا یَشۡتَهُونَ ۝٢١
Maududi
and with the flesh of any fowl that they may desire to eat
walaḥmi ṭayrin mimmā yashtahūn
56:22 ›
وَحُورٌ عِینࣱ ۝٢٢
Maududi
and there shall be wide-eyed maidens
waḥūrun ʿīnu
56:23 ›
كَأَمۡثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤۡلُوِٕ ٱلۡمَكۡنُونِ ۝٢٣
Maududi
beautiful as pearls hidden in their shells
ka-amthāli l-lu'lu-i l-maknūn
56:24 ›
جَزَاۤءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٤
Maududi
All this shall be theirs as a reward for their deeds
jazāan bimā kānū yaʿmalūn
56:25 ›
لَا یَسۡمَعُونَ فِیهَا لَغۡوࣰا وَلَا تَأۡثِیمًا ۝٢٥
Maududi
There they shall hear no idle talk nor any sinful speech
lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laghwan walā tathīma
56:26 ›
إِلَّا قِیلࣰا سَلَـٰمࣰا سَلَـٰمࣰا ۝٢٦
Maududi
All talk will be sound and upright
illā qīlan salāman salāma
56:27 ›
وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡیَمِینِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٧
Maududi
As for the People on the Right, how fortunate shall be the people on the Right
wa-aṣḥābu l-yamīni mā aṣḥābu l-yamīn
56:28 ›
فِی سِدۡرࣲ مَّخۡضُودࣲ ۝٢٨
Maududi
They shall be in the midst of thornless lote trees
fī sid'rin makhḍūdi
56:29 ›
وَطَلۡحࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ ۝٢٩
Maududi
and flower-clad acacias
waṭalḥin manḍūdi
56:30 ›
وَظِلࣲّ مَّمۡدُودࣲ ۝٣٠
Maududi
and extended shade
waẓillin mamdūdi
56:31 ›
وَمَاۤءࣲ مَّسۡكُوبࣲ ۝٣١
Maududi
and gushing water
wamāin maskūbi
56:32 ›
وَفَـٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِیرَةࣲ ۝٣٢
Maududi
and abundant fruit
wafākihatin kathīrati
56:33 ›
لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ ۝٣٣
Maududi
never-ending and unforbidden
lā maqṭūʿatin walā mamnūʿati
56:34 ›
وَفُرُشࣲ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ ۝٣٤
Maududi
They shall be on upraised couches
wafurushin marfūʿati
56:35 ›
إِنَّاۤ أَنشَأۡنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَاۤءࣰ ۝٣٥
Maududi
and their spouses We shall have brought them into being afresh
innā anshanāhunna inshāa
56:36 ›
فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا ۝٣٦
Maududi
and shall have made them virgins
fajaʿalnāhunna abkāra
56:37 ›
عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابࣰا ۝٣٧
Maududi
intensely loving and of matching age
li-aṣḥābi l-yamīn
56:38 ›
لِّأَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٨
Maududi
All this will be for the People on the Right
Li-as-habi alyameeni
2 The Guilty
56:39 ›
ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٣٩
Maududi
a large throng from the ancients
thullatun mina l-awalīn
56:40 ›
وَثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٤٠
Maududi
and also a large throng from those of later times
wathullatun mina l-ākhirīn
56:41 ›
وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ۝٤١
Maududi
As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left
wa-aṣḥābu l-shimāli mā aṣḥābu l-shimāl
56:42 ›
فِی سَمُومࣲ وَحَمِیمࣲ ۝٤٢
Maududi
They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water
fī samūmin waḥamīmi
56:43 ›
وَظِلࣲّ مِّن یَحۡمُومࣲ ۝٤٣
Maududi
and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke
waẓillin min yaḥmūmi
56:44 ›
لَّا بَارِدࣲ وَلَا كَرِیمٍ ۝٤٤
Maududi
which will neither be cool nor soothing
lā bāridin walā karīmi
56:45 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَبۡلَ ذَ ٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِینَ ۝٤٥
Maududi
Surely they had lived before in luxury
innahum kānū qabla dhālika mut'rafīn
56:46 ›
وَكَانُوا۟ یُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٤٦
Maududi
and had persisted in the Great Sin
wakānū yuṣirrūna ʿalā l-ḥinthi l-ʿaẓīm
56:47 ›
وَكَانُوا۟ یَقُولُونَ أَىِٕذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝٤٧
Maududi
They used to say: "What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead
wakānū yaqūlūna a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn
56:48 ›
أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝٤٨
Maududi
(We) and our fore-fathers of yore?"
awaābāunā l-awalūn
56:49 ›
قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ وَٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٤٩
Maududi
Tell them, (O Prophet): "The earlier ones and the later one
qul inna l-awalīna wal-ākhirīn
56:50 ›
لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٥٠
Maududi
shall all be brought together on an appointed Day
lamajmūʿūna ilā mīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi
56:51 ›
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٥١
Maududi
Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth
thumma innakum ayyuhā l-ḍālūna l-mukadhibūn
56:52 ›
لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرࣲ مِّن زَقُّومࣲ ۝٥٢
Maududi
shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum
laākilūna min shajarin min zaqqūmi
56:53 ›
فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٥٣
Maududi
filling your bellies with it
famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn
56:54 ›
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَیۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَمِیمِ ۝٥٤
Maududi
and thereupon you shall drink boiling water
fashāribūna ʿalayhi mina l-ḥamīm
56:55 ›
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرۡبَ ٱلۡهِیمِ ۝٥٥
Maududi
drinking it as thirsty camels do."
fashāribūna shur'ba l-hīm
56:56 ›
هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٥٦
Maududi
Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense
hādhā nuzuluhum yawma l-dīn
56:57 ›
نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ۝٥٧
Maududi
We have created you, then why would you not confirm it
naḥnu khalaqnākum falawlā tuṣaddiqūn
56:58 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ ۝٥٨
Maududi
Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit
afara-aytum mā tum'nūn
56:59 ›
ءَأَنتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقُونَ ۝٥٩
Maududi
Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators
a-antum takhluqūnahu am naḥnu l-khāliqūn
56:60 ›
نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَیۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِینَ ۝٦٠
Maududi
It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated
naḥnu qaddarnā baynakumu l-mawta wamā naḥnu bimasbūqīn
56:61 ›
عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَـٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِی مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦١
Maududi
Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about
walaqad ʿalim'tumu l-nashata l-ūlā falawlā tadhakkarūn
56:62 ›
وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٦٢
Maududi
You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it
Walaqad AAalimtumu alnnash-ata al-oola falawla tathakkaroona
56:63 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ ۝٦٣
Maududi
Have you considered the seeds you till
afara-aytum mā taḥruthūn
56:64 ›
ءَأَنتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلزَّ ٰرِعُونَ ۝٦٤
Maududi
Is it you or We Who make them grow
a-antum tazraʿūnahu am naḥnu l-zāriʿūn
56:65 ›
لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمࣰا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ ۝٦٥
Maududi
If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim
law nashāu lajaʿalnāhu ḥuṭāman faẓaltum tafakkahūn
56:66 ›
إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ ۝٦٦
Maududi
"We have been penalised
innā lamugh'ramūn
56:67 ›
بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ ۝٦٧
Maududi
nay; we have been undone!"
bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn
56:68 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِی تَشۡرَبُونَ ۝٦٨
Maududi
Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink
afara-aytumu l-māa alladhī tashrabūn
56:69 ›
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنزِلُونَ ۝٦٩
Maududi
Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down
a-antum anzaltumūhu mina l-muz'ni am naḥnu l-munzilūn
56:70 ›
لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ أُجَاجࣰا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٧٠
Maududi
If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks
law nashāu jaʿalnāhu ujājan falawlā tashkurūn
56:71 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِی تُورُونَ ۝٧١
Maududi
Did you consider the fire which you kindle
afara-aytumu l-nāra allatī tūrūn
56:72 ›
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَاۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنشِءُونَ ۝٧٢
Maududi
Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow
a-antum anshatum shajaratahā am naḥnu l-munshiūn
56:73 ›
نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَمَتَـٰعࣰا لِّلۡمُقۡوِینَ ۝٧٣
Maududi
We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy
naḥnu jaʿalnāhā tadhkiratan wamatāʿan lil'muq'wīn
56:74 ›
فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٤
Maududi
Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord
fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm
3 Judgment is Inevitable
56:75 ›
۞ فَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَ ٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٧٥
Maududi
No! I swear by the positions of the stars
falā uq'simu bimawāqiʿi l-nujūm
56:76 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمࣱ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِیمٌ ۝٧٦
Maududi
and this is indeed a mighty oath, if only you knew
wa-innahu laqasamun law taʿlamūna ʿaẓīmu
56:77 ›
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانࣱ كَرِیمࣱ ۝٧٧
Maududi
that this indeed is a noble Qur´an
innahu laqur'ānun karīmu
56:78 ›
فِی كِتَـٰبࣲ مَّكۡنُونࣲ ۝٧٨
Maududi
inscribed in a well-guarded Book
fī kitābin maknūni
56:79 ›
لَّا یَمَسُّهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ ۝٧٩
Maududi
which none but the pure may touch
lā yamassuhu illā l-muṭaharūn
56:80 ›
تَنزِیلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٠
Maududi
a revelation from the Lord of the Universe
tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn
56:81 ›
أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ ۝٨١
Maududi
Do you, then, take this discourse in light esteem
afabihādhā l-ḥadīthi antum mud'hinūn
56:82 ›
وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٨٢
Maududi
and your portion in it is simply that you denounce it as false
watajʿalūna riz'qakum annakum tukadhibūn
56:83 ›
فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلۡحُلۡقُومَ ۝٨٣
Maududi
Why, then, when the soul leaps up to the throat
falawlā idhā balaghati l-ḥul'qūm
56:84 ›
وَأَنتُمۡ حِینَىِٕذࣲ تَنظُرُونَ ۝٨٤
Maududi
the while you are helplessly watching that he is on the verge of death
wa-antum ḥīna-idhin tanẓurūn
56:85 ›
وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَیۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٨٥
Maududi
– at that moment when We are closer to him than you, although you do not see (Us
wanaḥnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walākin lā tub'ṣirūn
56:86 ›
فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَیۡرَ مَدِینِینَ ۝٨٦
Maududi
if you are not subject to anyone´s authority
falawlā in kuntum ghayra madīnīn
56:87 ›
تَرۡجِعُونَهَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٨٧
Maududi
why are you then not able to bring them back to life if you are truthful
tarjiʿūnahā in kuntum ṣādiqīn
56:88 ›
فَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٨٨
Maududi
So if he is one of those who are near-stationed (to Allah)
fa-ammā in kāna mina l-muqarabīn
56:89 ›
فَرَوۡحࣱ وَرَیۡحَانࣱ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِیمࣲ ۝٨٩
Maududi
then happiness and delight and Gardens of Bliss are his
farawḥun warayḥānun wajannatu naʿīmi
56:90 ›
وَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٠
Maududi
And if he is one of the People on the Right
wa-ammā in kāna min aṣḥābi l-yamīn
56:91 ›
فَسَلَـٰمࣱ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩١
Maududi
he will be welcomed by the words: "Peace to you" from the People on the Right
fasalāmun laka min aṣḥābi l-yamīn
56:92 ›
وَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٩٢
Maududi
And if he is one of those who give the lie (to this Message) and go astray
wa-ammā in kāna mina l-mukadhibīna l-ḍālīn
56:93 ›
فَنُزُلࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٩٣
Maududi
then he will be served boiling water
fanuzulun min ḥamīmi
56:94 ›
وَتَصۡلِیَةُ جَحِیمٍ ۝٩٤
Maududi
and will be scorched by the Fire
wataṣliyatu jaḥīmi
56:95 ›
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلۡیَقِینِ ۝٩٥
Maududi
That indeed is the absolute truth
inna hādhā lahuwa ḥaqqu l-yaqīn
56:96 ›
فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٩٦
Maududi
So glorify the name of your Great Lord
fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm
