1 Three Classes of Men

۞ إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ۝١

When the Event to happen happens

idhā waqaʿati l-wāqiʿat

لَیۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ۝٢

There is no denying its happening –

laysa liwaqʿatihā kādhibatu

خَافِضَةࣱ رَّافِعَةٌ ۝٣

Abasing some and exalting others

khāfiḍatun rāfiʿatu

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجࣰّا ۝٤

When the earth is shaken with a violent shock

idhā rujjati l-arḍu rajja

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسࣰّا ۝٥

And the mountains are shattered and crumbl

wabussati l-jibālu bassa

فَكَانَتۡ هَبَاۤءࣰ مُّنۢبَثࣰّا ۝٦

So they become dust scattered

fakānat habāan munbatha

وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا ثَلَـٰثَةࣰ ۝٧

You (all conscious, responsible beings) will be sorted out into three group

wakuntum azwājan thalāthata

فَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ ۝٨

Thus: the people of the Right (the people of happiness and prosperity, who receive their Records in their right hands): how happy and prosperous are the people of the Right

fa-aṣḥābu l-maymanati mā aṣḥābu l-maymanat

وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡءَمَةِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡءَمَةِ ۝٩

And the people of the Left (the people of wretchedness, who will receive their Records in their left hands): how wretched are the people of the Left

wa-aṣḥābu l-mashamati mā aṣḥābu l-mashamat

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ۝١٠

And the foremost (in faith and good deeds, and serving God’s cause) will be the foremost (in receiving and enjoying God’s mercy)

wal-sābiqūna l-sābiqūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ۝١١

Those are the ones near-stationed to God

ulāika l-muqarabūn

فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝١٢

In Gardens abounding in bounty and blessings

fī jannāti l-naʿīm

ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣

A good many of them are from among the first (to have embraced God’s Religion)

thullatun mina l-awalīn

وَقَلِیلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٤

And a few from the later (generations)

waqalīlun mina l-ākhirīn

عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مَّوۡضُونَةࣲ ۝١٥

(They will be seated) on lined thrones (encrusted with gold and precious stones)

muttakiīna ʿalayhā mutaqābilīn

مُّتَّكِءِینَ عَلَیۡهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝١٦

Reclining upon them, facing one another

Muttaki-eena AAalayha mutaqabileena

یَطُوفُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَ ٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ۝١٧

There will go round them immortal youths

yaṭūfu ʿalayhim wil'dānun mukhalladūn

بِأَكۡوَابࣲ وَأَبَارِیقَ وَكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینࣲ ۝١٨

With goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a clear-flowing spring

bi-akwābin wa-abārīqa wakasin min maʿīni

لَّا یُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا یُنزِفُونَ ۝١٩

From which no aching of the head ensues, nor intoxication of the mind

lā yuṣaddaʿūna ʿanhā walā yunzifūn

وَفَـٰكِهَةࣲ مِّمَّا یَتَخَیَّرُونَ ۝٢٠

And with fruits such as they choose

wafākihatin mimmā yatakhayyarūn

وَلَحۡمِ طَیۡرࣲ مِّمَّا یَشۡتَهُونَ ۝٢١

And with the flesh of fowls such as they desire

walaḥmi ṭayrin mimmā yashtahūn

وَحُورٌ عِینࣱ ۝٢٢

And (there will be) pure maidens, most beautiful of eye

waḥūrun ʿīnu

كَأَمۡثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤۡلُوِٕ ٱلۡمَكۡنُونِ ۝٢٣

Like pearls kept hidden (in their shells)

ka-amthāli l-lu'lu-i l-maknūn

جَزَاۤءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٤

A reward for all (the good) that they used to do

jazāan bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

لَا یَسۡمَعُونَ فِیهَا لَغۡوࣰا وَلَا تَأۡثِیمًا ۝٢٥

They will hear there neither vain talk nor accusing speech

lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laghwan walā tathīma

إِلَّا قِیلࣰا سَلَـٰمࣰا سَلَـٰمࣰا ۝٢٦

(They will hear) only speech (wishing) peace and security after peace and security

illā qīlan salāman salāma

وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡیَمِینِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٧

And the people of the Right (the people of happiness and prosperity who will receive their Records in their right hands): how happy and prosperous are the people of the Right

wa-aṣḥābu l-yamīni mā aṣḥābu l-yamīn

فِی سِدۡرࣲ مَّخۡضُودࣲ ۝٢٨

Amidst cherry trees laden with fruit

fī sid'rin makhḍūdi

وَطَلۡحࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ ۝٢٩

And banana trees with fruit piled high

waṭalḥin manḍūdi

وَظِلࣲّ مَّمۡدُودࣲ ۝٣٠

And shade long-extended

waẓillin mamdūdi

وَمَاۤءࣲ مَّسۡكُوبࣲ ۝٣١

And water gushing (and flowing constantly)

wamāin maskūbi

وَفَـٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِیرَةࣲ ۝٣٢

And fruits (of every other kind) abounding

wafākihatin kathīrati

لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ ۝٣٣

Never cut off, nor forbidden

lā maqṭūʿatin walā mamnūʿati

وَفُرُشࣲ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ ۝٣٤

And (with them will be their) spouses ennobled with beauty and spiritual perfection

wafurushin marfūʿati

إِنَّاۤ أَنشَأۡنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَاۤءࣰ ۝٣٥

We have brought them into being in a new creation

innā anshanāhunna inshāa

فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا ۝٣٦

And We have made them virgins

fajaʿalnāhunna abkāra

عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابࣰا ۝٣٧

Full of love for their husbands, and equal in age

li-aṣḥābi l-yamīn

لِّأَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٨

For the people of the Right (the people of happiness and prosperity)

Li-as-habi alyameeni

2 The Guilty

ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٣٩

A good many of them are from among the first (to have embraced God’s Religion)

thullatun mina l-awalīn

وَثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٤٠

And a good many are from the later (generations)

wathullatun mina l-ākhirīn

وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ۝٤١

And the people of the Left (who will be given their Records in their left hands): how wretched are the people of the Left

wa-aṣḥābu l-shimāli mā aṣḥābu l-shimāl

فِی سَمُومࣲ وَحَمِیمࣲ ۝٤٢

In the midst of scorching wind and hot, boiling water

fī samūmin waḥamīmi

وَظِلࣲّ مِّن یَحۡمُومࣲ ۝٤٣

And the shadow of black smoke

waẓillin min yaḥmūmi

لَّا بَارِدࣲ وَلَا كَرِیمٍ ۝٤٤

(A shadow) neither cooling nor refreshing

lā bāridin walā karīmi

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَبۡلَ ذَ ٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِینَ ۝٤٥

Indeed, before that, they were lost in excess of pleasures (without moral scruples)

innahum kānū qabla dhālika mut'rafīn

وَكَانُوا۟ یُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٤٦

And would persist in committing the greatest sin (of unbelief or associating partners with God and denying the afterlife)

wakānū yuṣirrūna ʿalā l-ḥinthi l-ʿaẓīm

وَكَانُوا۟ یَقُولُونَ أَىِٕذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝٤٧

And would say: "What? After we have died and become dust and bones, will we indeed be raised from the dead

wakānū yaqūlūna a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn

أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝٤٨

"And also our forefathers of old?"

awaābāunā l-awalūn

قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ وَٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٤٩

Say: "Those of old and those of later time

qul inna l-awalīna wal-ākhirīn

لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٥٠

"Will all be brought together at an appointed time on a Day well-known."

lamajmūʿūna ilā mīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٥١

Then: O you who have strayed (from the Straight Path), who deny (the afterlife)

thumma innakum ayyuhā l-ḍālūna l-mukadhibūn

لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرࣲ مِّن زَقُّومࣲ ۝٥٢

You will surely eat of the tree of Zaqqum

laākilūna min shajarin min zaqqūmi

فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٥٣

And you fill up your bellies with it

famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَیۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَمِیمِ ۝٥٤

Thereafter you will drink of hot, boiling water

fashāribūna ʿalayhi mina l-ḥamīm

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرۡبَ ٱلۡهِیمِ ۝٥٥

You will drink as the camel raging with thirst drinks

fashāribūna shur'ba l-hīm

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٥٦

This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment

hādhā nuzuluhum yawma l-dīn

نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ۝٥٧

It is We Who have created you. So will you not confirm as truth (what We convey to you as truth)

naḥnu khalaqnākum falawlā tuṣaddiqūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ ۝٥٨

Have you considered the semen that you emit

afara-aytum mā tum'nūn

ءَأَنتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقُونَ ۝٥٩

Is it you who create it, or are We the Creator

a-antum takhluqūnahu am naḥnu l-khāliqūn

نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَیۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِینَ ۝٦٠

It is also We Who decree death among you – and We cannot be overcome

naḥnu qaddarnā baynakumu l-mawta wamā naḥnu bimasbūqīn

عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَـٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِی مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦١

So that We may replace you (with new generations like you), and bring you about in a new mode and form of existence you do not know

walaqad ʿalim'tumu l-nashata l-ūlā falawlā tadhakkarūn

وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٦٢

For certain you know the first creation (how you are brought into the world), then should you not reflect on (and anticipate the second creation)

Walaqad AAalimtumu alnnash-ata al-oola falawla tathakkaroona

أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ ۝٦٣

Have you ever considered the seed you sow (in the ground)

afara-aytum mā taḥruthūn

ءَأَنتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلزَّ ٰرِعُونَ ۝٦٤

Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who make it grow

a-antum tazraʿūnahu am naḥnu l-zāriʿūn

لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمࣰا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ ۝٦٥

If We so willed, We would surely make it into chaff, and then you would not cease to exclaim

law nashāu lajaʿalnāhu ḥuṭāman faẓaltum tafakkahūn

إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ ۝٦٦

"We are indeed in a great loss (with our money, time, and efforts gone to waste)

innā lamugh'ramūn

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ ۝٦٧

"Rather, we are left utterly deprived (of our livelihood)."

bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِی تَشۡرَبُونَ ۝٦٨

Have you ever considered the water that you drink

afara-aytumu l-māa alladhī tashrabūn

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنزِلُونَ ۝٦٩

Is it you who send it down from the cloud or is it We Who send it down

a-antum anzaltumūhu mina l-muz'ni am naḥnu l-munzilūn

لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ أُجَاجࣰا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٧٠

If We so willed, We would make it bitter and salty. Then, should you not give thanks

law nashāu jaʿalnāhu ujājan falawlā tashkurūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِی تُورُونَ ۝٧١

Have you ever considered the fire that you kindle

afara-aytumu l-nāra allatī tūrūn

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَاۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنشِءُونَ ۝٧٢

Is it you who bring into being the tree for it, or is it We bring it into being

a-antum anshatum shajaratahā am naḥnu l-munshiūn

نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَمَتَـٰعࣰا لِّلۡمُقۡوِینَ ۝٧٣

We have made it something for reflection (on Our handiwork and Our grace in making the creation useful and beautiful), and a comfort (especially) for the dwellers (and wayfarers) in the desert

naḥnu jaʿalnāhā tadhkiratan wamatāʿan lil'muq'wīn

فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٤

Therefore, glorify the Name of your Lord, the Supreme (declaring His being absolutely above having any defects and partners)

fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm

3 Judgment is Inevitable

۞ فَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَ ٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٧٥

I swear by the locations of the stars (and their falling)

falā uq'simu bimawāqiʿi l-nujūm

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمࣱ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِیمٌ ۝٧٦

– It is indeed a very great oath, if you but knew. –

wa-innahu laqasamun law taʿlamūna ʿaẓīmu

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانࣱ كَرِیمࣱ ۝٧٧

Most certainly it is a Qur’an (recited) most honorable

innahu laqur'ānun karīmu

فِی كِتَـٰبࣲ مَّكۡنُونࣲ ۝٧٨

In a Book well-guarded

fī kitābin maknūni

لَّا یَمَسُّهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ ۝٧٩

None except the purified ones can reach it (to obtain the knowledge it contains. And none except those cleansed of material and spiritual impurities should touch it)

lā yamassuhu illā l-muṭaharūn

تَنزِیلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٠

It is a Book being sent down in parts from the Lord of the worlds

tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ ۝٨١

Is it this Discourse that you hold in low esteem

afabihādhā l-ḥadīthi antum mud'hinūn

وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٨٢

And do you make your share of it denying it

watajʿalūna riz'qakum annakum tukadhibūn

فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلۡحُلۡقُومَ ۝٨٣

Then, how is it you do not – when the soul comes up to the throat (of a dying human)

falawlā idhā balaghati l-ḥul'qūm

وَأَنتُمۡ حِینَىِٕذࣲ تَنظُرُونَ ۝٨٤

While you are looking on –

wa-antum ḥīna-idhin tanẓurūn

وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَیۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٨٥

And while We are nearer to him (the dying human) than you are, but you do not see (that) –

wanaḥnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walākin lā tub'ṣirūn

فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَیۡرَ مَدِینِینَ ۝٨٦

Then, how is it you do not – if you are not bound to Us in dependence (subject to Our will) –

falawlā in kuntum ghayra madīnīn

تَرۡجِعُونَهَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٨٧

(How is it that) you do not restore the soul (of that dying human), if you are truthful (in your claim)

tarjiʿūnahā in kuntum ṣādiqīn

فَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٨٨

Now, if he (that dying human) is of those near-stationed to God

fa-ammā in kāna mina l-muqarabīn

فَرَوۡحࣱ وَرَیۡحَانࣱ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

Then (there is for him) comfort in eternal relief (from all kinds of hardships and pains), and abundance, and a Garden of bounty and blessing

farawḥun warayḥānun wajannatu naʿīmi

وَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٠

If he is of the people of the Right (the people of happiness and prosperity who will receive their Records in their right hands)

wa-ammā in kāna min aṣḥābi l-yamīn

فَسَلَـٰمࣱ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩١

Then "Peace be upon you" (will be what you will always hear) from the people of the Right

fasalāmun laka min aṣḥābi l-yamīn

وَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٩٢

But if he is one of those who denied (Our Message and Our Messengers), who strayed (from the Straight Path)

wa-ammā in kāna mina l-mukadhibīna l-ḍālīn

فَنُزُلࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٩٣

Then his entertainment is boiling wate

fanuzulun min ḥamīmi

وَتَصۡلِیَةُ جَحِیمٍ ۝٩٤

And roasting in a Blazing Flame

wataṣliyatu jaḥīmi

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلۡیَقِینِ ۝٩٥

Surely this (Qur’an) is certain truth

inna hādhā lahuwa ḥaqqu l-yaqīn

فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٩٦

So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Supreme (affirming that He is exalted above any falsehood)

fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm

Export 96 verses as:
